The Charioteer unabridged 1988 audiobook, narrated by Davina Porter
I've finished recording the cassettes, cleaning up the audio, and stitching the whole thing together! I've had to split it into two parts (each around 7.5 hours).
The tape was corrupted in 2 places near the end of chapter 6 that I have cleaned up as best as possible, but if there are any other issues with the content or playing/downloading it, please let me know!
To download the audiobook directly, here is a link to a Google Drive folder containing both audio files.
And I've also uploaded it to the Internet Archive, just in case something happens to the Drive. You can find a link to it here.

As we ventured up another staircase to the top floor, we passed a portrait that made me stop in my tracks. Its occupant was a lovely young woman with black hair, Jamie’s blue eyes, and a smile much like Jenny’s. Her dress was modest but refined, and she’d been painted in a garden setting. There were other portraits on display, and to anyone else, this would have looked like a typical oil painting--just like the rest. But there was no denying the presence of ambient magic.
“Who is this?” I asked tremulously.
“My father’s mother. Her name was Davina Porter,” Jamie replied softly, studying the portrait with an expression that said he’d done a thousand times and didn’t expect to see anything new. “This must ha’ been painted when she was a lass. She was quite a bit older when she died.”
I hummed thoughtfully and continued to eye the woman’s painted face, drawing my wand to cast a quick diagnostic charm. Jamie made an inquisitive sound.
“There’s ambient magic. Not just a trace, like with your ring. This magic is strong. Magical portraits are interactive, even the landscapes. Images of people or other beings capable of speech can move and speak. They can even retain the same information the subject possessed when they died,” I explained, watching the woman’s face closely.
Not a twitch.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” he replied, now scrutinizing the painting with mild alarm. I frowned and ended the charm.
“Well, it’s definitely a magical portrait. Odd, though. Most of the time, when they’re not active, the subjects appear to be sleeping. Though, I’ve seen some in muggle museums, in my time, that have perfected the art of holding still.”
Quite suddenly, the woman blinked, and her painted smile widened.
“I was beginning to think I’d never get to speak with another witch, lass. And I certainly didna expect a Sassenach.”

The Mikaelson family’s relationships, especially their romantic relationships, are weird. Klaus and Elijah have a weird thing going on in which they share partners (Katherine, Tatia, Hayley - but probably more. I think it’s kinda gross being with someone who’s been with your brother but to each their own I guess). Freya fell in love with someone she kidnapped - which is never a great sign.
But the worst is probably Rebekah who is technically Marcel’s aunt - and yet they’re together romantically. Davina is like Marcel’s daughter - and yet she’s with Kol who is like Marcel’s uncle which would mean that Davina is like Marcel’s aunt. However, if Hope is the sister of Marcel, and Marcel is the father of Davina, would that make Hope her aunt? Or if Davina’s with Kol, does that make Hope her niece and Marcel her nephew?
Honestly I think the only Mikaelson sibling to have a normal (as normal as it can be given that they’re vampires and live through centuries) romantic relationship is Finn. I think he and Sage were a pretty normal, average couple compared to everyone else.
I don’t know… I’m trying not to analyze the Mikaelsons and their messed up relationships too much because it kinda grosses me out and makes my head hurt. Im trying to focus on the bright side - no one is actually related - so that’s good.
The Mikaelson are each so fucked up and their personal relationships are even more screwed.
It was implied in The Vampire Diaries the Mikaelson shared partners sexually, and there was this one girl called Mary Porter/Scary Mary, who was a "Original groupie". She was close to all of them, to the point none of them could "remember" by which sibling she had been turned. Knowing how fucked up they are, sharing partners isn't something weird, especially to Klaus and Elijah who loved fighting over the same girl.
Freya falling in love with Keelin was so fucked up. I like them, they're cute once you get past the whole kidnapping thing, but it's wrong regardless. After she finally got with Freya, her storyline was reduced to nothing: she just became her love interest and stopped being her own person. Not surprising, though, the writers of this shows love doing that.
Marcel falling for Rebekah is just straight up grooming, and it's crazy how it was never addressed or how the fandom denies it. You're gonna tell me she saw him grow up, saw his brother love and care for him as his own son, and still managed to be attracted to him? To even marry him and want children with him? It's a miracle he never called her aunt at least once, even if it was sarcastically. I really don't like how the show kept painting Marcel as the bad guy and Rebekah as the victim because he refused to be/couldn't be with her, like why?
I can overlook Kol and Davina because he never saw Marcel as family and she never saw the Mikaelson as her family either, didn't even like them. Still wrong tho, because Davina was like fifteen/sixteen by the time they met and Kol/Kaleb looked around his twenties.
Finn and Sage were absolutely adorable. I truly like Finn and I wished he had at least a chance at a happy ending, but sadly he died twice and he couldn't even mourn the woman he loved.
At least they're not related, but fucked up anyway. I try not to analyze the Mikaelson relationships either because they're clearly problematic and fucked up even for an universe such as The Vampire Diaries, but oh well.
Thanks for the ask! I had fun answering it.

Names and FACES we know.
Murtagh, Dougal, Colum… ???
Thanks for the message, Anon. You’re referring to The Herald’s story, Outlander 'Blood of My Blood': Prequel to begin filming in Glasgow, where Matthew B Roberts says:
The title is a nod to Jamie Fraser’s marriage vow to Claire and there will be several names and faces that Outlander fans will know and recognise.
Many names will be familiar, but I think it’s misleading to say we’ll recognise faces. 🤷🏻♂️ Brian and Ellen married in 1716, which means everyone who still lives in 1743 when Claire first arrives through the stones is 27 years younger than when we meet them on TV. And… the story of Brian and Ellen’s romance begins before 1716, so the 1743ers are more than 27 years younger, BOMB time.
Which names might we recognise? You mention three obvious ones, representing the two principal clans. Will we see (young) faces to match my list of names? 🍿
Castle Leoch: Clan MacKenzie (Photo: Starz)
The MacKenzies are here!
Patriarch/Matriarch
Jacob (Seamus Ruadh) / Anne Grant
Children
Ellen (marries Brian Fraser)
Colum (marries Leticia Chisholm)
Dougal (marries Maura Grant)
Janet
Flora
Jocasta (marries John Cameron… future husbands, Hugh and Hector Cameron)
Groupies
Old Alec
Mrs Fitz
Ned Gowan
Marcus MacRannoch
Malcolm Grant
Rupert (not much younger than Jocasta
Angus (probably close to Rupert’s age)
Beaufort Castle: Clan Fraser (Photo: Starz, of Dean, the stunt castle)
Je suis prest!
Patriarch/Mistress (Brian’s mother)
Simon, Lord Lovat (The Old Fox) / Davina Porter
Children
Brian (Brian Dubh)
4 half-brothers, including Simon, Master of Lovat
3 half sisters
Groupies
Murtagh
John Murray
Mrs Murray
I’m hesitant to use dates here because discrepancies exist between sources he says mildly, but if BOMB continues into the early years of Brian and Ellen’s marriage…
Lallybroch: Fraser-MacKenzie home (Photo: Starz)
Children (in birth order)
Ian Murray
Willie Fraser
Jenny Fraser
Jamie Fraser
Robert Fraser (dies with Ellen during childbirth)
So, there are 32 familiar names whose not-so-familiar faces we might see in BOMB. 😃 Can anyone think of other names? Comment away…
Remember… in keeping with unpopular opinions, such as enjoying The Search and Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone, Brian is looking forward to Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Some people might suggest all Brian’s taste is in his mouth. 😂

And in even more casting news today the "Outlander" prequel "Blood of my Blood" has casted 4 more roles. First is Brian McCardie as Issac Grant. Then Jhon Lumsden as his son Malcolm Grant, who is also a suitor of Jamie's mom Ellen's. Then Sara Vickers, who I loved on "Endeavour", has been cast as Brian's mother and Jamie's paternal grandmother Davina Porter, who is named after the "Outlander" book series' actual narrator. Finally, Peter Mullan from many shows/movies is Red Jacob MacKenzie, Jamie's maternal grandfather and the head of Clan MacKenzie.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Casts Peter Mullan as Red Jacob MacKenzie, Sara Vickers & 2 More
Kelli Boyle, TV Insider Apr 3, 2024
The Outlander spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, has added four more actors to the clan. TV Insider can exclusively announce that Peter Mullan, Sara Vickers, Brian McCardie, and Jhon Lumsden have joined the cast of the Starz series, currently in production in Scotland, and they’ll bring to life characters fans have already heard of in the flagship series.
Mullan will be playing Red Jacob MacKenzie, laird of Clan MacKenzie, father to Ellen (Harriet Slater), Dougal (Sam Retford), and Colum (Séamus McLean Ross), and maternal grandfather to Sam Heughan‘s Jamie Fraser.
Mullan, a veteran Scottish actor and filmmaker, can currently be seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and recently starred in the series The Northwater with Colin Farrell and Jack O’Connell, as well as in Barry Jenkins’ critically acclaimed The Underground Railroad. He earned an Emmy nomination for Top of the Lake and has also been seen in Ozark, Westworld, Cursed, and Mum.
Brian McCardie
McCardie will be playing Isaac Grant, laird of Clan Grant. And Lumsden will be playing Malcolm Grant, Isaac’s son and a potential suitor for Ellen.
McCardie has been seen in Outlander before, in a Season 1 cameo as Sir Marcus MacRannoch. He’s also known for Rob Boy, Line of Duty, Low Winter Sun, Snatch, and more.
Jhon Lumsden
Lumsden is a relative newcomer, with roles in Karen Pirie, Blood, Sex & Royalty, and Pancake. He’ll next be seen in The Famous Five, coming out later this year.
Sara Vickers
Vickers will be playing Davina Porter, a housekeeper in the Lovat household, mother to Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Jamie’s paternal grandmother. As previously announced, Brian’s father, Lord Lovat, will be played by Mary & George‘s Tony Curran.
Vickers is a stage and screen actor best known for her role as Joan Thursday in the Inspector Morse prequel, Endeavour from 2013-2023, as well as Sunshine on Leith and Shetland. Vickers played Ms. Crookshanks in Watchmen alongside Regina King and Jeremy Irons. She recently starred in Guilt.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood tells the love stories of Jamie (Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitríona Balfe) parents. Slater and Roy play Jamie’s parents in the 1700s Scottish Highlands, with Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine as Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, in the 1900s England during World War I.

Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is brought in to investigate the murder of the son of the Earl of Seaford. Long thought dead, after sent off to Botany Bay after being tried for murder, Nicholas Hayes turns up alive in London where he looks up Sebastian’s valet, Jules Calhoun. With Calhoun’s help, Sebastian starts to piece together his last days as well as the days 18 years before when he was accused and found guilty of murder. Narrated by the estimable Davina Porter, the Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries is one of my favorite series when I know I’ll have time to really listen to the details this very talented writer builds into her novels. All of the characters in this world are fully developed and each book releases another mystery about one of our main characters that keeps me coming back. The mystery in Who Speaks for the Damned centers around a man who had been though dead for years, but when he shows back up in London with a small child Sebastian unearths a handful of villainous characters who may or may not be the murderer. At the heart of the story is the search for the child who is now all alone on the mean streets of 18th century London. A small child can easily come to harm and the way the author created tension through the emotions the females in this novel felt regarding this lost child really helped to amp up the need to find the killer. As usual, the author really gives a multi-layered view of society during the 18th century in London. From street sweepers to the Prince Regent you can see the different ways each layer of society lived and how privileged the nobility were during this time. That is another reason why I love these books because our hero, despite being a Viscount, believes that every person deserves recognition and their loves should be honored. This is why he investigates their murders. A very noble Noble! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❣️ Click this link to purchase this audiobook!* Who Speaks for the Damned Copyright 2024 The Reading Chick All Rights Reserved *Amazon Associate- if you purchase this book through the above link I’ll receive a small stipend.

I’m over at AudioGals with a review of What Cannot Be Said by CS Harris, narrated by Amy Scanlon. I still miss Davina Porter’s narration but Amy Scanlon did pretty well.

davina porter's the charioteer
So I've actually been meaning to ask this for a while, but a discussion with @carrotcakecrumble has finally motivated me to do so.
Is anyone here around from the maryrenaultfics LiveJournal days, and do any of those people happen to have Davina Porter's The Charioteer audiobook lurking on a hard drive somewhere?
Because I downloaded mine from the LJ community back in the day and it's been sitting on a 20-year-old iPod ever since, and after some extensive Googling, it sounds like this might be a piece of lost media? Since the cassette version isn't available anywhere and WorldCat is LYING to me about the libraries it supposedly exists in. I am hoping someone else out there has this 1988 audiobook in digital format, because I don't trust this ancient iPod of mine 😬
Anyone?
#if i have to dig out this ipod and figure out how to get its 20 year old files off of it and onto a computer and uploaded#i will#but i'm hoping it exists out there already#the charioteer#tc fandom reread#mary renault

MamaCat Answers a LinkedIn Question
And now for the actual answer to the question that Jupiter F. Stone ☄️ asked in the first place: What are you currently reading?
I love audiobooks, & I'm currently re-listening to the "Outlander" series of books, because Davina Porter on my ears is like brandy and satin and velvet for the mind.
In the reading-as-in-reading realm, I am Yes!, reading many brilliant posts, articles, and essays which are Black History Month oriented this month. The explosion of information and history currently available, and currently authored by persons of color, is wealth and must not be squandered.
My reading has also been taken up with studying on #ageism. Ageism is the only "Othering" that anyone can grow into, simply by existing.
I read white older people writing that ageism is the last remaining prejudice. I read #LGBTQ+ and #BIPOC persons saying that no, not quite, do try a mile in our shoes, you may be white-centering your ageism concerns.
I hear one old white man after another trying SO HARD to show all of us why we are exactly wrong about our own lived experiences. I occasionally find these fellows busting into women-centered spaces to mansplain our lives.
And I am also reading and consuming video content regarding the #ClimateCrisis and #ExtinctionRebellion because nothing else matters.
Meow, darlings.

So true about Jeff Woodman! <3
His narration is so good that I found myself cringing trying to listen Davina Porter's version of John and Percy -- ugh, especially Percy (why the f*ck did she give Percy a French accent even when he was alone with John and, logically, wouldn't have been using a fake accent?! so dumb)!
Jeff's Percy is so beautifully soft-spoken and gentle that I can't fathom how anyone could hate him. I mean, seriously, Percy-haters, do y'all enjoy kicking puppies, too??
"And became aware, very much too late, that he did _ LOVE _ Percy Wainwright."
It's always too late, isn't it?
Jeff is the Best narrator ever 👏 if you haven't listened to Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade yet, you should.
#seriously though the LJG audiobooks are SO good!#they're so good that when my library removed them from their collection I was so crushed I actually couldn't NOT go out and buy them#and understand that I'm chronically ill and poor AF as a result so I *don't* spend money lightly...I HAD to have the LJG audiobooks!#lord john grey#percy wainwright#lord john series#jeff woodman
