"Like The New York Times, CNN and network news programs, it [PowerPoint] appears to be neutral, unbiased and free of any leanings one way or another. Just as a hammer does not tell you what kind of house to build, Microsoft would like us to think...that their product is merely a neutral tool. It is faceless, and it is what you put into it that counts.
However, every piece of software comes with its own set of biases and tendencies. The most obvious bias and the easiest to see in PowerPoint, is the Auto Content Wizard, a feature that makes outlines of presentations with bullet points for those who feel they don't know how to make a presentation themselves...
However, there are more subtle sets of biases at work. The way the PowerPoint is structured and the various options provided have not only been limited...but they have been designed assuming, a priori, a specific world view. The software, by making certain directions and actions easier and more convenient than others, tells you how to think as it helps you accomplish your task. Not in an obvious way or in an obnoxious way or even in a scheming way. The biases are almost unintentional, they are so natural and well-integrated. It is possible that the engineers and designers have no intention of guiding and straightening out your thinking; they simply feel that the assumptions upon which they base their design decisions are the most natural and practical. You are thus subtly indoctrinated into a manner of being and behaving, assuming and acting, that grows on you as you use the program."

Bogdanas! A species I created, these live in the Star Wars Universe, the first is called David MontelStriker, and the second, who is David's mother, is called Galadriel.
David in the drawing is an adult, but he hasn't seen his mother since he was 14 Thalers (which is equivalent to 14 years of a human child, even though he literally has about 45 years of existence at that time)
Galadriel, the eternal servant of Padme Amidala, was responsible for 100% of the life and existence of Queen Amidala while she was still alive, when the fall of the republic happens and soon the death of Amidala, Galadriel gives her only son Ouriel ( today known as David) to Obi Wan Kenobi, which he promises to keep Ouriel and the twin children of Amidala safe while Galadriel and her millennial sword called Sycorax remain to give the children time to escape. Galadriel heard of the destruction of her home planet-moon: Talassa, and soon joined Force 99, as she would soon discover that her species were the primordial clones, created about 10,000 years ago to serve the Jedi order.
Galadriel was the only Bogdana reported in about 8000 years who had no connection with the force, her sword: Sycorax, is made of a unique and indestructible material coming from an already extinct moon of the same name. Galadriel died in a glorious battle without ever seeing her son again, becoming a martyr to the Rebels.
David has a long story and not yet completely finished, I will show it soon.

Theeb (Naji Abu Nowar, 2014)
Cast: Jacir Eid Al-Hwietat, Hassan Mutlag Al-Maraiyeh, Hussein Salameh Al-Sweilhiyeen, Jack Fox, Marji Audeh. Screenplay: Naji Abu Nowar, Bassel Ghandour. Cinematography: Wolfgang Thaler. Production design: Anna Lavelle. Film editing: Rupert Lloyd. Music: Jerry Lane.
Theeb (the name, we learn, means "wolf") is a young Bedouin boy whose older brother, Hussein, is called on to help an Englishman find his way to a well in the desert. The Englishman, a soldier, carries with him a wooden box that arouses Theeb's curiosity, though the Englishman angrily shoos him away every time Theeb tries to inspect it. It is 1916, and we recognize the box as a detonator and, especially if we've seen Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962), realize that the soldier is delivering it to the Arabs rebelling against the Ottoman Empire. When Hussein leaves with the soldier, Theeb sneaks away to follow them; when he catches up with them, the soldier insists that they don't have time to return him to the tribe's camp but must continue to the well, where he is scheduled to meet up with his contacts. At this point, the conventional desert adventure movie might play off the relationship between the angry soldier and the curious boy, perhaps developing a friendship between them as they carry out the soldier's mission. But this isn't a conventional film. It's British-Jordanian director Naji Abu Nowar's first feature film, and even though he describes it as a "Bedouin Western," it's grounded in actuality more than in Hollywood genre films. All of the actors except Jack Fox, who plays the soldier, are non-professionals.  Abu Nowar and co-screenwriter Bassel Ghandour spent a year living with and researching the Bedouins in Jordan, and choosing their cast, including the pre-adolescent Jacir Eid Al-Hwietat, who plays Theeb in an engagingly natural performance. The film takes place at the same time and in the same place as Lawrence of Arabia, and the cinematography of Wolfgang Thaler shows the influence of Freddie Young's work on that film. But Theeb stands Lean's celebrated film on its head by making the soldier a dispensable secondary character. The adventure is Theeb's, as he finds himself first alone in the desert and then with a companion he has good reason to hate. The result is a smart, unsentimental look at a place and way of life filled with hardships and perils. It received a well-deserved Oscar nomination for best foreign language film.

Why Does a Decomposing Whale Explode?
4–5 minutes
Experts are scrambling to find a way to dispose of the 380,000-pound (170,000-kilogram) corpse before gases generated by its decomposing body cause it to explode.
News of the bulging behemoth has gone viral, with hundreds of news articles and the creation of the hashtag #explodingwhale and the website Has the Whale Exploded Yet?
But no one knows when the whale’s going to blow, if at all. Don Bradshaw, a reporter for Newfoundland station NTV News, has tweeted that the gas inside the whale has begun to naturally deflate.
National Geographic spoke to the exploding-whale website’s founder, Andrew David Thaler, a marine biologist who also runs the blog Southern Fried Science, to learn more about the phenomenon of exploding beached whales.
How frequently do dead whales end up on beaches?
Marine mammal strandings, either alive or dead, are not particularly uncommon. [Strandings of] big whales, like blue whales, are much more rare simply because there are very few blue whales left [in the world]. (Explore National Geographic’s blue whale interactive.)
What would cause a whale to explode?
Tumblr media
The whale is seen bloated with gas (left) and a more recent picture of it slowly deflating.
Photographs by Don Bradshaw, NTV
It can handle a lot of pressure.[Usually what] causes whales to explode is people doing stuff to them, either from bystanders trying to climb on or take a souvenir from the carcass, crews trying to move the carcass, or, in the case of the Faroes exploding sperm whale, intentionally degassing it (graphic video). That’s one very good reason you should never approach a dead-whale carcass.
If the whale died in the ocean, what would happen to its body?
Tumblr media

When a whale dies at sea, it will eventually sink. Whales are so big that scavengers aren’t able to tear the carcass apart, so they often arrive on the seafloor intact. The deep sea is generally a pretty low-energy environment, so an entire whale represents a massive influx of food. (Related: “Dead Whale Contains a Bounty of Life.”)
Entire communities grow around these “whalefalls.” First the mobile scavengers—large deep-sea sharks, hagfish, and others—come in to remove soft tissue and break apart the carcass. Later, creatures like Osedax mucofloris, the bone-eating worm, arrive to slowly break down the bones. (Watch an animated video of the phases of a whalefall.)
This entire process can take 30 years or more, so the afterlife of a whale is as ecologically significant as its natural life.
What are a community’s options to dispose of a beached whale’s dead body?
The best option is usually to bury it on site. If that is not possible, removal is a challenging proposition. Whales are huge, and bringing in major earth moving equipment in some cases can be more destructive to the shoreline than just leaving the whale to decompose naturally. (Related: “A New, More Humane Way to Euthanize Stranded Whales.”)
News reports say that residents were complaining about the smell. What exactly does dead, bloated whale smell like?
Imagine a jar of bacon grease that you leave out in the sun for weeks. Now imagine that odor is so potent that it clings to everything you own. It gets in your sinuses and stays there for days afterward. I participated in the necropsy of a right whale about six years ago and my chest-waders still smell faintly like that day. Decomposing whale is one of the worst smells in the world.

Actually, OP's got another detail incorrect, specifically about how copyright surrounding this issue is shaped, and I think it's important to discuss.
There is no real argument to be had about whether or not the machines are infringing. The machines have made use of copywrit material without consent from nor compensation to the state recognized owners. It is demonstrably true that under the law, the algorhythms are infringed upon copywritten material. That is not a disputed fact in any of the cases, of which I am aware.
The defense the algorythm's owners will present to the court is gonna be fair use, which is an affirmative defense: to use an affirmative defense, you first admit guilt and then argue to the court that your specific circumstances fall under a specific, established, protective exception to the rule.
And, that argument could go either way, but there's a strong argument that the algorythms don't constitute a fair use of the materials infringed, and accepting that agrument wouldn't have any broader implications for mediums like colliage.
The simple argument is thus:
One of the key-most factor of Fair Use is Transformativity.
A transformative use adds "new expression, meaning, or message" to the original work, which requires authorship.
The intent of the law as writ and interpreted by the courts thus far is to protect human authorship specific, rejecting copyright for Monkey selfies in Naruto v. David Slater et al and machine generated images in The US Copyright Office's decision on Thaler's A Recent Entrance into Paradise.
Because it's been established that works with and without human authorship can be and are treated differently by current existing law.
Because machine generated images are established by case law to lack human authorship.
Because transformativity, a key-most factor in determining fair use, requires things which require authorship.
It can be argued that machine learned algorythm's outputs do not constitute a fair use, as they are merely derivative rather than transformative.
From there just you have to do some rhetorical and legal arguments to get the courts to consider the algorythm on the merits, demerits, and character of its outputs.
And Bam! The algorythms that exist because they've infringed get yote into oblivion and there are none ramnifications for the humans working in mediums like colliage, because they are humans, and humans are legally distinct from non-humans and get preferencial treatment under the law as intented.
Now, clarifying all of that, I'm a copyright abolitionist who thinks we should well do away with the whole fucking system as it exists, and that no matter the outcome of the copyright cases being litigated currently, copyright will not fully deliver us from these fucking useless-ass algorythms nor their rammies.
But, I'm still clarifying because I think it's important to understand the mechanics of the systems one advocates against.
What I don't get is that other your support of AI image generation, you're SO smart and well read and concerned with ethics. I genuinely looked up to you! So, what, ethics for everyone except for artists, or what? Is animation (my industry, so maybe I care more than the average person) too juvenile and simplistic a medium for you to care about its extinction at the hands of CEOs endorsing AI? This might sound juvenile too, but I'm kinda devastated, because I genuinely thought you were cool. You're either with artists or against us imho, on an issue as large as this, when already the layoffs in the industry are insurmountable for many, despite ongoing attempts to unionize. That user called someone a fascist for pointing this out, too. I guess both of you feel that way about those of us involved in class action lawsuits against AI image generation software.
i can't speak for anyone else or the things they've said or think of anyone. that said:
1. you should not look up to people on the computer. i'm just a girl running a silly little blog.
2. i am an artist across multiple mediums. the 'no true scotsman' bit where 'artists' are people who agree with you and you can discount anyone disagrees with you as 'not an artist' and therefore fundamentally unsympathetic to artists will make it very difficult to actually engage in substantive discussion.
3. i've stated my positions on this many times but i'll do it one more: i support unionization and industrial action. i support working class artists extracting safeguards from their employers against their immiseration by the introduction of AI technology into the work flow (i just made a post about this funnily enough). i think it is Bad for studio execs or publishers or whoever to replace artists with LLMs. However,
4. this is not a unique feature of AI or a unique evil built into the technology. this is just the nature of any technological advance under capitalism, that it will be used to increase productivity, which will push people out of work and use the increased competition for jobs to leverage that precarity into lower wages and worse conditions. the solution to this is not to oppose all advances in technology forever--the solution is to change the economic system under which technologies are leveraged for profit instead of general wellbeing.
5. this all said anyone involved in a class action lawsuit over AI is an enemy of art and everything i value in the world, because these lawsuits are all founded in ridiculous copyright claims that, if legitimated in court, would be cataclysmic for all transformative art--a victory for any of these spurious boondoggles would set a precedent that the bar for '''infringement''' is met by a process that is orders of magnitude less derivative than collage, sampling, found art, cut-ups, and even simple homage and reference. whatever windmills they think they are going to defeat, these people are crusading for the biggest expansion of copyright regime since mickey mouse and anyone who cares at all about art and creativity flourishing should hope they fail.

UK Supreme Court rules AI cannot be patent “inventor”
On Wednesday, a US computer scientist lost a bid to register patents for inventions created by his artificial intelligence system in a UK landmark case on whether AI can own patent rights, Reuters reported.
Stephen Thaler wanted to obtain two patents in the UK for inventions he claimed were invented by his “creative machine” called DABUS. His attempt to register the patents was rejected by Britain’s Intellectual Property Office on the grounds that the inventor must be a person or company, not a machine.
Thaler appealed to the UK Supreme Court, which on Wednesday unanimously rejected his appeal, because under UK patent law “an inventor must be a natural person.”
Judge David Kitchin said in the court’s written ruling:
This appeal is not concerned with the broader question whether technical advances generated by machines acting autonomously and powered by AI should be patentable.

Genderforscher fordert: Liebeslieder verbieten!
ScienceFiles:»Berlin, rp. It's not exactly pathological deflation, but isn't "pathological inflation-resistance" a decent-ish description of the problems with bullion standards (e.g. the gold standard)?
I'm reminded of something from David Graeber's Debt: the First 5000 Years:
"But how exactly did the new global economy cause the collapse of living standards in Europe? One thing we do know: it clearly was not by making large amounts of precious metal available for everyday transactions. If anything, the effect was the opposite. While European mints were stamping out enormous numbers of rials, thalers, ducats, and doubloons, which became the new medium of trade from Nicaragua to Bengal, almost none found their way into the pockets of ordinary Europeans. Instead, we hear constant complaints about the shortage of currency. In England:
For much of the Tudor period the circulating medium was so small that the taxable population simply did not have sufficient coin in which to pay the benevolences, subsidies, and tenths levied upon them, and time and time again household plate, the handiest near money that most people possessed, had to be surrendered.
This was the case in most of Europe. Despite the massive influx of metal from the Americas, most families were so low on cash that they were regularly reduced to melting down the family silver to pay their taxes.
This was because taxes had to be paid in metal. Everyday business in contrast continued to be transacted much as it had in the Middle Ages, by means of various forms of virtual credit money: tallies, promissory notes, or, within smaller communities, simply by keeping track of who owed what to whom. What really caused the inflation is that those who ended up in control of the bullion - governments, bankers, large-scale merchants - were able to use that control to begin changing the rules, first by insisting that gold and silver were money, and second by introducing new forms of credit-money for their own use while slowly undermining and destroying the local systems of trust that had allowed small-scale communities across Europe to operate largely without the use of metal currency." - David Graeber, Debt: the First 5,000 Years, Chaper 11.
"You shall not crucify mankind on a cross of gold," etc.
everybody knows the major inflationary episodes in history like Weimar Germany, but what are the go-to examples of major pathological deflation? seems rarer overall and I don’t have a good idea of what might cause it
