Types of Libertarianism
Libertarianism encompasses a range of theories about individual freedom, limited government, and the role of authority in society. Here are some key theories within libertarian thought:
1. Classical Libertarianism
Core Idea: Emphasizes individual liberty, minimal government interference, and free-market capitalism.
Theorists: John Locke, Adam Smith, and later, Robert Nozick.
Core Principle: The government’s role is to protect individual rights, especially property rights, and otherwise leave people free to pursue their own interests.
2. Anarcho-Capitalism
Core Idea: Advocates for the abolition of the state, with all functions typically performed by government, like law enforcement and defense, provided by private entities.
Theorists: Murray Rothbard, David D. Friedman.
Core Principle: Society should operate purely on voluntary agreements and contracts, with the market solving all problems through competition and self-regulation.
3. Left-Libertarianism
Core Idea: Combines libertarian principles with social justice concerns, emphasizing self-ownership, equal rights to natural resources, and opposing unequal wealth accumulation.
Theorists: Hillel Steiner, Peter Vallentyne.
Core Principle: While supporting individual liberty, it advocates for shared ownership or redistribution of natural resources to address inequality, thus aligning with some egalitarian ideals.
4. Minarchism
Core Idea: A form of libertarianism that supports a "minimal state" (minarchism), with the state limited to roles like protecting rights, defense, and judicial enforcement.
Theorists: Ayn Rand, Robert Nozick.
Core Principle: Government should only perform functions essential to protecting individual rights, such as maintaining a military and legal system, and stay out of other areas.
5. Civil Libertarianism
Core Idea: Focuses on protecting individual civil liberties and rights, particularly freedom of speech, privacy, and autonomy from state interference.
Theorists: John Stuart Mill, associated with modern civil rights movements.
Core Principle: Argues for strong protections against government encroachment on personal freedoms, particularly those enshrined in the Bill of Rights or similar civil liberties.
6. Libertarian Paternalism (Soft Libertarianism)
Core Idea: Suggests minimal, non-coercive state interventions that "nudge" individuals toward making better choices without restricting their freedom.
Theorists: Richard Thaler, Cass Sunstein.
Core Principle: Uses insights from behavioral economics to encourage beneficial choices while preserving individual autonomy, such as default retirement savings plans where people can opt out.
7. Geo-Libertarianism
Core Idea: Proposes that individuals fully own their labor and the products of their labor, but land and natural resources should be shared or taxed for the common good.
Theorists: Henry George.
Core Principle: Emphasizes a tax on land or natural resources to fund public goods, thus ensuring individuals benefit from the natural resources of a society without impeding individual liberty in other areas.
8. Libertarian Socialism
Core Idea: Advocates for a stateless society that organizes around decentralized communities, focusing on collective, voluntary, and self-managed structures.
Theorists: Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Noam Chomsky.
Core Principle: Seeks to reduce hierarchical power, including capitalist structures, through a voluntary and community-focused approach.
9. Moral Libertarianism
Core Idea: Grounds libertarian beliefs in moral principles, often derived from Kantian ethics or natural rights theories.
Theorists: Robert Nozick, Jan Narveson.
Core Principle: Libertarianism is justified on moral grounds, claiming that individuals have an inherent right to self-ownership and that government should not violate this right.

Why Does a Decomposing Whale Explode?
4–5 minutes
Experts are scrambling to find a way to dispose of the 380,000-pound (170,000-kilogram) corpse before gases generated by its decomposing body cause it to explode.
News of the bulging behemoth has gone viral, with hundreds of news articles and the creation of the hashtag #explodingwhale and the website Has the Whale Exploded Yet?
But no one knows when the whale’s going to blow, if at all. Don Bradshaw, a reporter for Newfoundland station NTV News, has tweeted that the gas inside the whale has begun to naturally deflate.
National Geographic spoke to the exploding-whale website’s founder, Andrew David Thaler, a marine biologist who also runs the blog Southern Fried Science, to learn more about the phenomenon of exploding beached whales.
How frequently do dead whales end up on beaches?
Marine mammal strandings, either alive or dead, are not particularly uncommon. [Strandings of] big whales, like blue whales, are much more rare simply because there are very few blue whales left [in the world]. (Explore National Geographic’s blue whale interactive.)
What would cause a whale to explode?
Tumblr media

Photographs by Don Bradshaw, NTV
It can handle a lot of pressure.[Usually what] causes whales to explode is people doing stuff to them, either from bystanders trying to climb on or take a souvenir from the carcass, crews trying to move the carcass, or, in the case of the Faroes exploding sperm whale, intentionally degassing it (graphic video). That’s one very good reason you should never approach a dead-whale carcass.
If the whale died in the ocean, what would happen to its body?
Tumblr media

When a whale dies at sea, it will eventually sink. Whales are so big that scavengers aren’t able to tear the carcass apart, so they often arrive on the seafloor intact. The deep sea is generally a pretty low-energy environment, so an entire whale represents a massive influx of food. (Related: “Dead Whale Contains a Bounty of Life.”)
Entire communities grow around these “whalefalls.” First the mobile scavengers—large deep-sea sharks, hagfish, and others—come in to remove soft tissue and break apart the carcass. Later, creatures like Osedax mucofloris, the bone-eating worm, arrive to slowly break down the bones. (Watch an animated video of the phases of a whalefall.)
This entire process can take 30 years or more, so the afterlife of a whale is as ecologically significant as its natural life.
What are a community’s options to dispose of a beached whale’s dead body?
The best option is usually to bury it on site. If that is not possible, removal is a challenging proposition. Whales are huge, and bringing in major earth moving equipment in some cases can be more destructive to the shoreline than just leaving the whale to decompose naturally. (Related: “A New, More Humane Way to Euthanize Stranded Whales.”)
News reports say that residents were complaining about the smell. What exactly does dead, bloated whale smell like?
Imagine a jar of bacon grease that you leave out in the sun for weeks. Now imagine that odor is so potent that it clings to everything you own. It gets in your sinuses and stays there for days afterward. I participated in the necropsy of a right whale about six years ago and my chest-waders still smell faintly like that day. Decomposing whale is one of the worst smells in the world.

INSIDE the Mind of a Successful Investor!
Investing can often feel like stepping into a vast, intricate labyrinth, can’t it? You’ve got jargon flying at you from every angle, complex theories that sound more like riddles than guidance, and an overwhelming array of choices that can leave even the most seasoned among us scratching our heads. But what if I told you there’s a treasure trove of wisdom just waiting to guide you through this maze? Today, we’re diving into a curated list of fifty widely acclaimed books on investments, covering everything from value investing to behavioral economics, personal finance, and portfolio management. So, grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s explore the world of investing together. Let’s kick things off with the classics of value investing. If you’ve ever heard the name Benjamin Graham, you know you’re in the presence of a giant. His seminal work, “The Intelligent Investor,” is often hailed as the bible of value investing. Graham teaches us the importance of looking beyond the noise of the market and focusing on the intrinsic value of a company. It’s about buying stocks when they’re undervalued and having the patience to hold onto them until their true value is realized. Imagine being able to sift through all the chaos and find those hidden gems that others overlook. Pair that with “Security Analysis,” co-authored with David Dodd, and you’ve got a foundational understanding of how to assess a company’s worth. It’s like having a map that shows you where the treasure lies. Then there’s Philip A. Fisher’s “Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits.” Fisher introduces us to the qualitative side of investing, emphasizing the importance of understanding a company’s management and competitive advantages. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about the people behind those numbers. And if you’re looking for a more modern twist, Joel Greenblatt’s “You Can Be a Stock Market Genius” and “The Little Book That Beats the Market” provide simple yet effective strategies for retail investors. Greenblatt’s approach is refreshing, showing that you don’t need a Wall Street background to succeed in the stock market. It’s like he’s saying, “Hey, you can do this too!” Now, let’s pivot to behavioral finance, a fascinating field that combines psychology and economics. Daniel Kahneman’s “Thinking, Fast and Slow” is a must-read, exploring the dual systems of thought that drive our decision-making. Kahneman’s insights into cognitive biases can help you understand why you might make irrational choices when it comes to money. Ever bought something on a whim and later regretted it? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Richard Thaler, another key figure in this realm, co-authored “Nudge,” a book that reveals how small changes in the way choices are presented can significantly impact our decisions. It’s like creating an environment that nudges us toward better financial choices without us even realizing it. Morgan Housel’s “The Psychology of Money” is another gem that delves into the emotional aspects of finance. Housel’s storytelling makes complex ideas relatable, reminding us that our relationship with money is often shaped by our experiences and emotions. It’s a gentle reminder that investing isn’t just about numbers and charts; it’s about our lives and the stories we tell ourselves. And if you want to understand why people often behave irrationally in financial markets, Richard Thaler’s “Misbehaving” is an engaging narrative that chronicles the evolution of behavioral economics. It’s like a behind-the-scenes look at why we do what we do with our money.

Actually, OP's got another detail incorrect, specifically about how copyright surrounding this issue is shaped, and I think it's important to discuss.
There is no real argument to be had about whether or not the machines are infringing. The machines have made use of copywrit material without consent from nor compensation to the state recognized owners. It is demonstrably true that under the law, the algorhythms are infringed upon copywritten material. That is not a disputed fact in any of the cases, of which I am aware.
The defense the algorythm's owners will present to the court is gonna be fair use, which is an affirmative defense: to use an affirmative defense, you first admit guilt and then argue to the court that your specific circumstances fall under a specific, established, protective exception to the rule.
And, that argument could go either way, but there's a strong argument that the algorythms don't constitute a fair use of the materials infringed, and accepting that agrument wouldn't have any broader implications for mediums like colliage.
The simple argument is thus:
One of the key-most factor of Fair Use is Transformativity.
A transformative use adds "new expression, meaning, or message" to the original work, which requires authorship.
The intent of the law as writ and interpreted by the courts thus far is to protect human authorship specific, rejecting copyright for Monkey selfies in Naruto v. David Slater et al and machine generated images in The US Copyright Office's decision on Thaler's A Recent Entrance into Paradise.
Because it's been established that works with and without human authorship can be and are treated differently by current existing law.
Because machine generated images are established by case law to lack human authorship.
Because transformativity, a key-most factor in determining fair use, requires things which require authorship.
It can be argued that machine learned algorythm's outputs do not constitute a fair use, as they are merely derivative rather than transformative.
From there just you have to do some rhetorical and legal arguments to get the courts to consider the algorythm on the merits, demerits, and character of its outputs.
And Bam! The algorythms that exist because they've infringed get yote into oblivion and there are none ramnifications for the humans working in mediums like colliage, because they are humans, and humans are legally distinct from non-humans and get preferencial treatment under the law as intented.
Now, clarifying all of that, I'm a copyright abolitionist who thinks we should well do away with the whole fucking system as it exists, and that no matter the outcome of the copyright cases being litigated currently, copyright will not fully deliver us from these fucking useless-ass algorythms nor their rammies.
But, I'm still clarifying because I think it's important to understand the mechanics of the systems one advocates against.
What I don't get is that other your support of AI image generation, you're SO smart and well read and concerned with ethics. I genuinely looked up to you! So, what, ethics for everyone except for artists, or what? Is animation (my industry, so maybe I care more than the average person) too juvenile and simplistic a medium for you to care about its extinction at the hands of CEOs endorsing AI? This might sound juvenile too, but I'm kinda devastated, because I genuinely thought you were cool. You're either with artists or against us imho, on an issue as large as this, when already the layoffs in the industry are insurmountable for many, despite ongoing attempts to unionize. That user called someone a fascist for pointing this out, too. I guess both of you feel that way about those of us involved in class action lawsuits against AI image generation software.
i can't speak for anyone else or the things they've said or think of anyone. that said:
1. you should not look up to people on the computer. i'm just a girl running a silly little blog.
2. i am an artist across multiple mediums. the 'no true scotsman' bit where 'artists' are people who agree with you and you can discount anyone disagrees with you as 'not an artist' and therefore fundamentally unsympathetic to artists will make it very difficult to actually engage in substantive discussion.
3. i've stated my positions on this many times but i'll do it one more: i support unionization and industrial action. i support working class artists extracting safeguards from their employers against their immiseration by the introduction of AI technology into the work flow (i just made a post about this funnily enough). i think it is Bad for studio execs or publishers or whoever to replace artists with LLMs. However,
4. this is not a unique feature of AI or a unique evil built into the technology. this is just the nature of any technological advance under capitalism, that it will be used to increase productivity, which will push people out of work and use the increased competition for jobs to leverage that precarity into lower wages and worse conditions. the solution to this is not to oppose all advances in technology forever--the solution is to change the economic system under which technologies are leveraged for profit instead of general wellbeing.
5. this all said anyone involved in a class action lawsuit over AI is an enemy of art and everything i value in the world, because these lawsuits are all founded in ridiculous copyright claims that, if legitimated in court, would be cataclysmic for all transformative art--a victory for any of these spurious boondoggles would set a precedent that the bar for '''infringement''' is met by a process that is orders of magnitude less derivative than collage, sampling, found art, cut-ups, and even simple homage and reference. whatever windmills they think they are going to defeat, these people are crusading for the biggest expansion of copyright regime since mickey mouse and anyone who cares at all about art and creativity flourishing should hope they fail.

UK Supreme Court rules AI cannot be patent “inventor”
On Wednesday, a US computer scientist lost a bid to register patents for inventions created by his artificial intelligence system in a UK landmark case on whether AI can own patent rights, Reuters reported.
Stephen Thaler wanted to obtain two patents in the UK for inventions he claimed were invented by his “creative machine” called DABUS. His attempt to register the patents was rejected by Britain’s Intellectual Property Office on the grounds that the inventor must be a person or company, not a machine.
Thaler appealed to the UK Supreme Court, which on Wednesday unanimously rejected his appeal, because under UK patent law “an inventor must be a natural person.”
Judge David Kitchin said in the court’s written ruling:
This appeal is not concerned with the broader question whether technical advances generated by machines acting autonomously and powered by AI should be patentable.
