Man in a Suitcase: The Revolutionaries (1.26, ITC, 1968)
"Well... all your clients cause this much trouble?"
"No, do yours?"
"Yeah. Usually."
#man in a suitcase#the revolutionaries#1968#classic tv#peter duffell#jan read#kevin laffan#richard bradford#hugh burden#ferdy mayne#sonia fox#david sumner#barry shawzin#marga roche#bruce boa#louis negin#david cargill#nik zaran#hal hamilton#mark peterson#the final episode to go into production‚ and even as the series was drawing to a close there were behind the scenes issues causing#problems; this episode was delivered by Laffan‚ who had got on well with previous script editor Stanley Greenberg‚ and who produced a#script inspired by the exile and assassination of Leon Trotsky. producer Sidney Cole was in fact very pro Soviet in his politics and#objected to the script‚ demanding rewrites to instead establish the characters as belonging to a fictional country. Laffan refused to work#on this with Greenberg's replacement Read‚ so Read and director Duffell did the rewrites themselves. despite all that this ends up being a#very solid action entry in the series; a tough‚ violent adventure but with an intelligent script. McGill is notably bad at the job he's#hired for and spends the episode trying to put it right (presumably for free?). he also gets some great threats in against some heavy#handed henchmen. guest Burden‚ playing the Trotsky figure‚ plays piano throughout: Burden was a trained musician and studied at the Royal#College of Music before he was an actor. Duffell had to fight to get Shawzin (at this point ill with cancer) cast in the episode; sadly#this was one of his final roles and he died just two weeks after broadcast

"Whether or not it’s conscious, we recognize our own flaws and deficiencies, and that in turn makes it easier to identify those traits in others."

At their core I think Tom and Freddie are very much alike: smarter than what is seen on the surface, observant and caughgaycaugh.
They both see right through each other from the get go and they are both aware of this. But where Tom is quiet and always on his toes to not get his constant cover blown, Freddie is a leaking cauldron of confidence that is not afraid to show off his deductions( sidetrack but I feel like Freddie basically is a less jittery slightly gayer Sherlock).
Tumblr media
Sure he is smart enough to pose as a potential threat to Tom's entire cover but that on its own isn't enough to hate someone on a personal level.
I'd like to think there was a time when Tom was more openly confident and used to show off his skills a lot more, much like the 1999s Tom Ripley does, but that he learned to tone it down to not draw attention to himself( something many neurodivergent people can probably relate to). Freddie on the other hand is not ashamed to show off and take up space, he comes off as confident both in who he is and his sexual orientation, as in he doesn't flaunt it but he doesn't actively hide it either.
Option one: Tom sees Freddie as someone he could have been, confident and outgoing, someone people like, which in and of itself could make you dislike a person, or....
Option two: he sees himself and all the things he has to hide represented in Freddie (and that really says so much more about Tom than anything else.)
So, with these thoughts fresh in mind, let's take a look at the Caravaggio once more....

-and mull over the fact that Caravaggio is both David and Goliath, both the killer and the victim, both the hater and the hated.

"I think the, the exciting thing about Tom Ripley is that he doesn't know anything. I, I think when you have these famous literary heroes, they develop a reputation like a psychopath or that he's a genius or something like that, and I think one of the things that I really appreciated; one of the things that Steve and I talked an awful lot about, was the fact that he makes so many mistakes. And so those mistakes are, you know, important. They're as important as the - the genius, you know, because that's what makes him human. You know, so you sort of have to unlearn a lot of this - the, the ideas that you have about, about the character.
I also don't think he's a natural born killer; I think he's kind of - he finds blood; he finds it kind of disgusting. It's not something he's used to, and for the majority of the audience - I'm not sure about the audience tonight - but most of us I, I would suppose have not murdered. And so we have to be - a couple of silent voices there; but, but um, but the night is young - but, you know, that we should be invited in to go: "What would I do?" and that's why I think, you know; that's why I think it's so exciting because we're invited to, to, to explore that - those dark thoughts, um, and what we might do, and that would involve a lack of expertise."
