Stars of the Roller State Disco (BBC, 1984)

"Yes, Desmond?"
"And I am Charles."
"Yes, Charles?"
"I was the youngest in my year. Languages. I could read French before I could whistle. I have a lot of Mallarmé by heart."
"Um, my degree is in technical engineering."
"How can I help you boys?"
"Exactly."

Rye Lane
Movies watched in 2023
Rye Lane (2023, UK)
Director: Raine Allen-Miller
Writers: Nathan Bryon & Tom Melia
Mini-review:
It had been a while since I had watched such a refreshing romantic comedy. I'm a sucker for these "meet and spend a whole day together" type of stories, and this movie absolutely pulled the concept off. The two leads have a lot of chemistry and their banter is really fun to watch. There are also a few laugh-out-loud funny scenes, like the one in the restaurant. On top of this, the movie's aesthetics are very stylish and it uses a lot of shots and angles that are quite unusual in the genre. Because of this, the film feels really unique, even if the story is not particularly groundbreaking. Besides the visuals, the witty writing also adds a very special flair to the movie. Thankfully, the movie is only 80 minutes long, so it never overstays its welcome and has the perfect amount of time to develop its lead characters. Do give this a chance if you like rom-coms that offer something different.

Hello, my friend! I am Very Bad at identifying female North American finches / sparrows, do you have any pointers? (I can tell a finch from a sparrow, but if every species has a similar looking friend, I am probably not going to have much luck)
SPARROW AND FINCH ID:
Duuuuuude, you are talking to the wrong person about sparrow ID. That is not at all a specialty of either of us.
The advice I always got from older birdwatchers that know sparrows is:
1. Buy a good sparrow field guide(s) (Make sure you have a recent Sibley Guides to NA birds.)
2. Learn them one at a time, and then eventually by process of elimination, you can rule out what you're not seeing in the field.
3. Try to go on Sparrow tours in your area. The local Audubon Society or Ornithological Society should provide them occasionally.
Try this too:
Sparrows Browse by Shape, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
Sparrows (Emberizidae) - North American Sparrows (birds-of-north-america.net)
Guide to North American Birds | Audubon
Peterson Reference Guide to Sparrows of North America: Rick Wright: Hardcover: 9780547973166: Powell's Books (powells.com)
Sparrows Of The United States & Canada: David Beadle: Trade Paperback: 9780125889759: Powell's Books (powells.com)
ANY OTHER BIRDERS HAVE TIPS FOR SPARROW AND FINCH ID?

Sam Levine and Alice Herman at The Guardian:
Activists are using Donald Trump’s decisive victory to further question the 2020 election results and sow doubts about close US senate races where ballots are still being counted. While they’ve been quiet about fraud in the presidential election this year, activists pointed to the unofficial total number of votes cast, noting that 20m more ballots had been cast in 2020. Ignoring the reality that there are millions of votes still being counted in states like California, Arizona and Nevada, they suggested the incomplete number was somehow evidence there were fake ballots in 2020.
“Where did 20 million votes go between 2020 and 2024? 15 million for Biden, 5 million for Trump. Who believes Trump received 5 million fewer votes in 2024?” Cleta Mitchell, a Trump ally and leader of the election denial movement, tweeted on Thursday. Abraham Hamadeh, who won election to the US House in Arizona, made a similar claim. “20 million missing Democrat voters – where’d they go.” The claim has been echoed by some on the left, who have falsely suggested that there were suspiciously fewer votes in 2024 than 2020 and that Harris should not have conceded the race. The claims were false. When all votes are counted, more than 157.5m people will have voted in the presidential election, according to an estimate by the New York Times. There were 159.7m ballots counted in the 2020 election.
[...] But instead of acknowledging the system works, activists targeted races other than the presidential contest, especially close US senate contests where ballots are still being counted. “So many down ballot Republicans were screwed out of a victory. Trump won by a far greater margin than what was reported,” tweeted David Clements, a former professor in New Mexico who has traveled the country spreading false information about voting machines. The delicate balance election deniers tried to find after the election was perhaps best encapsulated by Tom Fitton, a Trump ally who leads the conservative group Judicial Watch. “The steal was indeed stopped,” he tweeted on Thursday morning. A few hours later, he tweeted “what is happening right now in Maricopa county is election corruption”. Activists focused on close Senate races in Arizona and Nevada, two states where mail-in balloting is widely used and votes are counted for several days after the election. Trump is projected to win both states.
In Nevada, Senator Jacky Rosen, a Democratic, overtook opponent Sam Brown in the vote count after initially trailing him. Experts have long warned that because of the way different methods of voting are reported, it may appear that one candidate is ahead on election night only to have them fall behind as more votes are counted. Robert Beadles, a prominent election denier in Nevada who has spent years questioning election results, claimed there was something suspicious about the count. “They’ve flooded the system with enough illegal votes days after the election to take the lead. Will it stand….,” he wrote in a post on X Thursday morning.
In Arizona, where Democratic Ruben Gallego narrowly leads Republican Kari Lake in the US senate race, election deniers have also used Trump’s victory to question how other Republicans could lose. There were still 943,000 votes left to count on Thursday. “You’re trying to tell me that people voted for Trump then turned around and voted for Ruben Gallego and other Democrats at the state level?” Josh Barnett, an election denier in Arizona who has supported overturning the results from the 2022 election. “There’s no fucking way that happened. I’m not buying it. I told our state legislature this is what would happen when we don’t have properly and legally run elections. They take and “steal” what they can to gain control. Almost like a trade off.” Split ticket voting – voting for one party’s candidate at the top of the ticket and another party’s candidates for other offices – is not unusual in American presidential elections.
Right-wing election deniers are using Donald Trump’s 2024 win to sow even more doubt about the 2020 elections.

Get To Know Your Fic Writer
When did you you post your first ever fanfic?
May 22, 2018 - after two months of contemplation, I finally posted ‘Secrets Lies and Blessings’ to WattPad (I hate WattPad though and would like to remove all my fics from there but alas! My best friend likes that format and prefers to read it there so I’ve left them there)
First character(s) you wrote for?
Emma and Baelfire of course! (But when I was like 11/12 I actually wrote out little skits about some of the characters from Little House and Love Comes Softly🥴 but we won’t speak of those cringey things okay?)
Main character(s) you’re currently writing for?
Baelfire/Neal Cassidy. Though I am working on a first person story from Henry’s point of view (be on the look out for that one👀)
Character(s) you haven’t written about before but plan on writing about soon?
I’d love to write a story about Albert Ingalls🥹 And Hiccup and Astrid. But sadly, I lack plot ideas and such😔
Fandom(s) you’re currently writing for?
Once Upon a Time
Platonic pairing(s) you currently write for?
None…? When you’re a single hopeless romantic desperate for love, where’s the fun in writing that?
Romantic pairing(s) you currently write for?
Neal Cassidy and Emma Swan (the superior OUAT ship have you💁🏻♀️)
Your top 3 tags on AO3 (if you post your world on AO3)
Alternate universe - medieval; Storybrooke; Realm: The Enchanted Forest - Mist Haven (Lol… so me🤪)
Current platform where you post your works?
AO3
Snippet of the WIP you’re currently working on: (I’ve got a few. Hold on to your behinds…)
Secrets, Lies, and Blessings:
Emma barged through and helped herself through the doorway. “You can cut the ‘Your Highness’ nonsense, Rumpelstiltskin; I’ll be your daughter-in-law after next week so there’s no need for stupid formalities.”
“Fine.” He rolled his eyes. “What brings you to my door at this hour, Emma? Do your parents know you’re out galavanting through the forest?”
Emma waved off his question as she removed her hood. “They have no idea I left the castle.” She paused and turned as she watched Rumpel close the door. “I need to talk to you; it’s urgent.
Rumpel rolled his eyes and gestured toward a chair, pulled it out and offered it for Emma to sit.
“Thank you.” She gave a brief nod before sitting down.
The Wedding Night:
Emma and Baelfire didn’t have a conventional love story by any means. They met each other one cold December evening after sneaking out of their homes. Upon meeting, a startled Emma almost ran a very surprised and dumbfounded Baelfire through with her sword before he finally convinced her that he was unarmed and meant absolutely no harm. “I'm just out taking in the sights, same as you.” she remembered him saying with his hands held out in front him, palms facing her. After that night the two of them became friends and began to meet in secret in fear their parents wouldn’t approve of their friendship. Before long their friendship blossomed into romance, continuing to keep the relationship a secret. But eventually, their secret came to light two years later when Emma learned she was pregnant. Naturally, she was forced to tell her parents the truth about her and Baelfire and, after the initial shock, Snow and David accepted the ordeal as graciously as possible; with them deciding that the best option was for Bae and Emma to marry.
Where My Demons Hide:
“Neal,” Emma whispered, shaking her boyfriend awake. “Neal!” She said louder.
He groaned and shifted under the blanket while Emma continued to rouse him.
She shook him again, this time more rough. “Wakey wakey, Sleeping Beauty!” She chanted with a giggle.
Neal threw the blanket off of his head and sat up with a sigh, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“Sleep well?” she asked all too cheerily.
He only groaned in response before stretching - as well as he could, anyway, in their stupidly tiny stolen Beadle. “I guess so.” He looked at Emma through sleepy eyes. “What has you so happy this morning?”
Reflections:
My name is Henry David Cassidy. I’m twenty-eight years old and am about to marry the love of my life, Violet Morgan. It’s a bittersweet occasion. But why, you ask? Because I won’t have the privilege to share this occasion with my parents; they’re gone.
Princess Kidnapped!:
Then she remembered her tiny little one growing inside her and she suddenly felt a rush of protectiveness wash over her; whatever this sack of horse manure was planning on doing to her, she promised her unborn child that she would do whatever it took to protect it.

kooks - david bowie
will you stay in our lover's story if you stay you won't be sorry 'cause we believe in you
the baby was perfect. he had beautiful light brown skin, a curly black head of hair, tiny little fingers and toes, but the thing that stuck out most about him was his eyes. they were dark green with little flecks of gold. 'just like your mothers' james whispered as he looked at him.
soon you'll grow so take a chance with a couple of kooks hung up on romancing
lily and james were so proud of their little boy and spent the next few days just holding him in their arms, and looking into his gorgeous eyes. he slept well every single night, only murmuring slightly if he was hungry. everything was going surprisingly well.
we bought a lot of things to keep you warm and dry and a funny old crib on which the paint won't dry
sirius and remus came first.
'so,' remus asked, 'what's his name?'
'oh, we haven't actually chosen yet.' lily said.
'oooo, what about 'sirius' ?' sirius asked.
'sirius, we are not naming our baby after you.' james replied
'i didn't mean me. i just think it's a nice name.' he grinned.
'shut up and help us come up with a name.'
'he's really hairy, you know.' said sirius
'HARRY!' james shouted
i bought you a pair of shoes a trumpet you can blow and a book of rules
'what?'
'harry. let's call him harry.'
'james,' lily said, 'that's not bad actually.'
'i know, right!'
'harry potter.' remus whispered
'harry james potter.' lily said
'huh?'
'well, we've got to name him after his father.'
on what to say to people when they pick on you 'cause if you stay with us you're gonna be pretty kookie too
james could barely console his excitement. in fact, he couldn't console his excitement. he lifted harry up and span around the room.
'harry james potter. my son. my beautiful son.'
harry james potter was certainly beautiful.
will you stay in our lover's story if you stay you won't be sorry 'cause we believe in you
remus and sirius brought out the gifts they had brought harry. there was a rattle, a little soft black dog toy that woofed when harry played with it, the tales of beadle the bard and a blanket that remus had knitted..
'i think he likes them.' lily said, placing the blanket over him and he murmured.
soon you'll grow so take a chance with a couple of kooks hung up on romancing
just as harry was falling asleep, the doorbell rang. james ran down the stairs, and they heard dorcas, marlene and marys voices coming from the door. sirius was cooing over harry, stroking his finger over his face and lily and remus were sat on the bed chatting.
'look who i found!' james said.
'hello my darlings!' remus said, getting up from the bed and hugging his friends.
and if you ever have to go to school remember how they messed up this old fool
'hey love,' mary smiled, 'how are you?'
'you know, just getting by.'
'yeah. seems like that at the moment.'
'well, i want to see him.' marlene said.
'he's just over there sleeping in the cot.'
at that point, harry let out a huge cry.
'apparently not.' dorcas laughed.
don't pick fights with the bullies or the cads 'cause i'm not much cop at punching other people's dads
'someone's hungry.' lily said.
james placed him in lily's arms and kissed her forhead. he shut the door quietly behind them as he and the others left.
'tea, anyone?' he asked.
'do you even need to ask?' said remus.
'anything for our moony.' he grinned.
and if the homework brings you down then we'll throw it on the fire and take the car downtown
'so,' marlene said, 'what's it like being a dad?'
james was quiet for a while, sipped his tea, then whispered 'perfect. i wake up every morning when i look into his eyes, i think 'wow. you've done it.' i've got a child who i'm going to raise with my beautiful wife and my incredible friends and it's going to be perfect. just perfect.'
