Dave Torres x Reader
Words: 1351
Summary: When neither of you can sleep, you stay up together.Â
Notes: I have been waiting for this show for so long, and I have to say I love it. I had to write for it. I wanted to start with something fluffier (you know me, itâs still angsty), but there will definitely be some full-out angst, donât you worry.Â
-
It felt like something was plugged into your head, sending constant pulses, over and over and over, making your body shake. Being wired was an understatement. You felt connected to the whole damn machine.Â
You tried to stop your leg from bouncing, but the other one just took over like they were in shifts.Â
Heâd be home soon. Heâd ask why you were up. Heâd ask if you were okay.Â
Youâd tell him yes. Youâd smile. Youâd stay up until he finally fell asleep. Youâd wake him from his nightmare.Â
That was your routine on the nights you felt like this. The nights when everything was so bright it burned, when every sound blared in your ears. At least the sounds drowned out the voices. But when it was quietâŠ
You took a deep breath, shaking your head at yourself.Â
âGet it together, Y/N.â You stood from your place on the couch. Pacing usually helped. It distracted your mind from the other forces trying to take your attention. The memories.Â
Tonight though, it seemed no matter how many laps you made around your living room-or how sore your feet were because of it- you still werenât tired.Â
The click at the door made you jump, heart leaping into your throat.Â
Dave saw the lights on before he saw you.Â
He sighed.Â
âYou know you donât have to wait up for me, right?â He peeked his head in the door.Â
You gave him a small smile. âI know. I want to.âÂ
He closed the door behind him and you could tell just from how he moved that it was another rough night.Â
You crossed the living room as he put his keys on the table.Â
âHey,â you said softly, pushing a black strand of hair away from his forehead.Â
He took your head in his, lacing his fingers with yours. âHey.âÂ
 âWork hard?â
âI always do.â He half-laughed, half-sighed.Â
Sitting in a chair in front of a screen wasnât exactly what he always wanted to do with his life, but it paid the bills and it wasnât affected by his⊠condition.Â
âIâll make you something to eat.â You tugged him toward the kitchen table, reaching for the cabinet door.Â
âIâm not really hungry.â
His stomach growled.Â
You smirked. âLiar.â
âYou donât have to-â
âDave, I couldnât sleep either. Itâs okay.â You pulled a pot down and filled it with water, plopping it on the stove. âBesides, you know how much I love my midnight mac and cheese.â
âI think itâs a little past midnight.âÂ
The clock on the oven flashed at you. Almost three in the morning.Â
You opened the box and pulled out the packet full of neon orange freeze-dried goodness.Â
âThat stuff is so bad for you.â Dave laughed, sitting on the corner of the counter.Â
âOh, but you love it.â You kissed his cheek. âAlmost as much as I love Dean Martin. Put a record on, would you?â
Dave hopped off the counter, shaking his head as he walked to your record player.Â
âYou know, only hipsters and college kids use these anymore.â
âIâm hearing too much talking and not enough singing, Dave.â The water began to boil and you dumped the pasta in.Â
âAlright, alright.â He put the needle on.Â
Smooth, soft music filled the apartment and helped quiet the sounds in your head. The voices reminding you that none of this would last.Â
Arms wrapped around your middle from behind. Dave rested his chin on your shoulder. He hummed along with the tune, the sound vibrating from his chest against your back. There was something in the way he held you. Like if he let go, youâd float away. Disappear.Â
âHey.â You turned around in his arms. âWhatâs going on?âÂ
Dave tried to smile for you, but he couldnât. Instead, he just pulled you closer, kissing you the way he did sometimes after his nightmares. He kissed you like he was losing you.Â
âDave.â You pulled back and put your hands on either side of his head. âIâm here. Iâm not going anywhere. You know that, right?â
He urged you back to him, burying his face in the crook of your neck.Â
âDaveâŠâ
âI know,â he said against your skin. âBut-â Dave took a deep breath. âCan we not go to bed for a little while?âÂ
You ran your fingers through his dark hair.Â
âOkay.âÂ
You werenât looking forward to sleeping anyway.Â
When the food was done, you both sat on the floor in the living room rather than at the table. The music continued and the two of you just⊠talked. You talked about anything. While the horrible, manufactured cheese warmed your stomach, you talked about work and books and the weird people youâd seen on your commute.Â
Dave talked about a party Matteo was trying to get him to go to. You talked about your sisterâs bridal shower coming up and how much you did not want to go.Â
âIs she still, you know?â
âPretending like nothing happened to us?â You raised a brow. âOf course. Anything else would mess up her perfect image.â You stabbed your macaroni with a particular aggression. âItâs not like our parents are fucking dead or anything.âÂ
Dave nodded. He looked up at you, concern growing in his eyes. âThatâs why youâre awake, isnât it?â
âI told you. I want to wait for you to get home, thatâs all.â You wouldnât look up at him.Â
Dave crawled forward, setting both bowls on the coffee table. âBaby, you can talk to me.âÂ
âLike you do?â You said. You grimaced, regretting your hostility as soon as you said it. âSorry.â
He sat beside you. âYou arenât wrong.â Dave put a hand on your arm. âI guess itâs something we can both work on.â
âYou sound like my therapist.âÂ
âThey sound smart. You should start listening.â
âHar har.â You tugged him forward, bringing his lips to yours. You melted into him, more and more of your anxiety melting with you. He could always do that. Just by being there, he could ease everything that plagued you.Â
He parted but stayed close. âTired yet?â
You shook your head.Â
âWant to put on another record?â
You nodded.Â
âMake it Sinatra this time.â
âYes maâam.âÂ
You stood up, letting the music control your movements. You swayed and spun and pointed your toes and swirled your body in any way the melody moved you. With each step, each motion of your hands, you seemed to chase away the harshness in your head. You could just be.
A soft chuckle pulled you from your thoughts.Â
Dave stood by the record player, a small smile on his face as he watched you.
âWhat?â You asked.
He just kept smiling. âNothing.âÂ
He waved his hand for you to continue, so you did. Thatâs when he started to sing.Â
âThe time is right, your perfume fills my head. The stars get red, and oh, the nightâs so blue.âÂ
Daveâs voice is rich and low and perfect. It fills your chest with a swelling happiness that soothes any sense of disquiet within you. That wired, wide-awake feeling fades into a content, relaxing ease.Â
âAnd then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like âI love you.ââÂ
The song started to fade out, coming to the end of the record. The needle rolled along, the record still spinning. Neither of you cared.Â
Dave crossed the room to you, laying his hands on your hips to hold you still in front of him.Â
âI love you,â he repeated.Â
You kept swaying, forcing him to dance slightly with you. âI love you, too.âÂ
He kissed you, this time long and slow. His hands moved to the small of your back, pulling you even closer to him.Â
You werenât sure how long you stayed like that, but eventually, the sun started to peak over the skyline outside your window. You ushered Dave to the couch, wrapping yourself in his embrace, and watched the sunrise. He kissed the top of your head. You sighed contently.
Neither of you were tired at all.

Since it's been a while since you've updated your TMC fanfic, can I get headcanons of the relationship between your OC (Clean Bubbles) and the canon characters (I've got a feeling that most of the characters are going to be alive- so I'm a bit hyped up!).
Well... since I'm working on the story and deep into it... I suppose I could tell you!
Characters Featured: Mark Heathcliff, Sarah Heathcliff, Cesar Torres, Adam Murray, Jonah Marshall, Evelin Miller, Thatcher Davis, Ruth Weaver, David Lee
(ANY FANART BELOW IS NOT MINE!)
MARK HEATHCLIFF
To Clean Bubbles, she sees him as a friend... but she feels like he's the older brother (which he is)
Although Mark already has a younger sister, Sarah, he thinks of Bubbles as the little baby of the family, much to his amusement
Despite Bubbles's efforts to act tough and strong and protect him, he feels like and knows that someone needs to watch over her after what she had been through for the past 15 years of her life
(Itâs usually Cesar or Mark that initiates the quarrel for fighting over the big brother position)
He's mostly chill around her, not really much of a teaser as much of his childhood friend and Jonah
He'll just be around her presence and genuinely enjoys her being around as another younger sibling of the family
He really likes her positive aura that she carries even though she struggles to quit her selfless bad habits. It does at least help him ease with his paranoia
CESAR TORRES
Bubbles would've also seen Cesar as an older brother, but since Mark already took the position, she sees him as the middle brother
He's a teaser to her, but not as much as Jonah, so he does teasing a little bit, usually when she falls asleep or acts funny
Sometimes gets in a mini-quarrel with his childhood friend, competing to see who's the better brotherly figure for Clean Bubbles
He helps Bubbles get optimistic back up since she's been living isolation for 15 years before meeting him and his childhood friend
Just like Mark, he wants to protect her, but she is insisting on protecting him with her stubbornness.
He'll be the one to make small gifts and surprises for her to make her smile
SARAH HEATHCLIFF
100% OLDER SISTER FIGURE!
Sarah definitely treats Bubbles with a lot of unconditional love (gentle headpats and hugs)
Sheâs always the one to stop her brother Mark and Cesar (her childhood friend in my headcanon)
Sheâll be the one to give Bubbles any item that sheâs interested in despite the insistence she doesnât need it
Because of Bubbles sometimes seeing Sarah as her biological older sister, Jade, sheâs always sticking close to her
Sarah is comfortable with Bubbles and vice versa.
ADAM MURRAY
This guy isn't the friendliest, which reminds Bubbles when she confronts her cousin (Blue Wing) when he's mad at something petty
They don't get along with each other well since neither talks to each other a lot. It's mostly a friend relationship
Adam isn't much of a comfort person, so he only sits and listens (which he sometimes can drone out)
Despite their differences, the only reason Adam stays with Bubbles is because of her knowledge of the Celestial Artisan and her magic makes it easier for him to fight and capture Alternates. Bubbles only likes Adam because she still cares for him (platonically) and needs to protect him from the truth of his existence despite his cold attitude which depicts a similarity with her cousin when he's mad and grumpy
Adam doesn't get angry a lot at Bubbles when the others are present around her or not, knowing that she's important for the team when fighting against Alternates.
The only reason that he gets mad (pun intended) at her is when she has to do something reckless that involves her self-sacrifice and her having no regard for selfless and her life
JONAH MARSHALL
Bubbles sees him as an extreme goofball, very much like one of her older cousins, Tyler Wing
Bubbles appreciates Jonah's company, seeing him as her "old self" before she got isekai'd into Mandela Catalogue world because of his goofy, light-hearted, and chaotic energy he carries
Jonah's not much of a comforting person, but he does try his best to support her. (He gives her a lot of hugs)
It's more of a friend-like relationship rather than a distant relative since Bubbles doesn't see him and Adam often
She really likes sharing her wild imagination with Jonah
They both get fascinated over the small things and hyped
EVELIN MILLER
They're both socially awkward and quiet, but that encourages Bubbles to speak up and help Evelin deal with her problems
It's mostly a friend relationship, similar to Jonah and Adam
Bubbles usually checks in with her if she ever gets the chance to meet up with her again and hopes that she's getting better
However, what Bubbles doesn't know is the fact Evelin is also concerned for her well-being
Evelin struggles to ask her if she's really doing okay, unlike everyone else.
Ever since Bubbles introduced her to the Celestial Artisan's magic, she had been becoming a bit more open as Bubbles slowly closed herself out from others.
When Bubbles checks in with Evelin, it reminds her of her past life at school of how she makes friends with a quiet kid and is usually the loud and excited one to talk
THATCHER DAVIS
Bubbles sees him as both emo uncle officer and tired dad. Thatcher sees her as a surrogate daughter.
He questions more encouragingly without sounding too cold or too kind when he knows something is off.
Unlike the canon timeline, he doesn't drink or smoke a lot to make him forget the pain due to Ruth being saved from the Celestial Artisan
However, he's still depressed that the Celestial Artisan "disappeared" and left humanity to succumb to the suffering of the Alternates
He still blames himself for not being able to do anything since the Celestial Artisan could only defeat the Alternates. But it changed when he met Bubbles...
Understanding that she had the knowledge and power of the Celestial Artisan's magic but kept it hidden out of fear and reason, he felt she was shouldering a heavier burden.
He knew he needed as much support despite not being with her often. But there he feels like there's something bigger she has kept hidden from him and the others...
RUTH WEAVER
This female police officer is DEFINITELY 100% a mother or auntie figure for Bubbles
Ruth really wanted to ask herself how the hell she is alive after nearly getting killed by Vol. 333 Alternate and saved by the Celestial Artisan.
Upon meeting Bubbles, she could tell something was extremely off with her when she was interrogated by her and Thatcher
Although she would've been disappointed in the Celestial Artisan having to leave humanity to suffer, she assumed it was supposed to be a message to tell humanity that they can't rely on the Celestial Artisan forever
She'll be the one to initiate the small conversations with Clean Bubbles and see how she is doing
Like Thatcher, she also sees her as a surrogate daughter that needs help after being isolated for 15 years of withholding powerful knowledge
When Bubbles is depicting everyone as a family member, she has trouble deciding with Thatcher and Ruth's role of being a family member since they act like both
DAVID LEE
(I love this wholesome guy) HE'S THE PERFECT ROLE FOR A GREAT UNCLE! Bubbles depicts him as a funny uncle she likes but is scared of angering the usual happy-go man
David is quite surprised when she is introduced to him after learning how she saved her nephew and nephew's best friend
He does notice Bubbles's sign of distancing, closeness, and aloofness with others, including him
David will try his best to get her open and comfortable with his presence and others' presence without probing her too much she feels uncomfortable.
Despite his genuine and wholesome kindness to Bubbles, she is still scared of disclosing some dark and personal information with him, but that doesn't mean he stops trying
He usually checks in after a few minutes or so, relying on his niece, nephew, and nephew's best friend to keep her in touch
David doesn't pry too far with asking Bubbles of her information. If she doesn't like it, he'll leave her alone, unlike Thatcher, making him a fool...

Minimal Loss: Part Two
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~2.2k
Summary: You and Spencer go undercover to a ranch that is run by a man who thinks heâs God. When you and Spencer are trapped there, you will do anything to protect him, even if it means putting yourself in danger.
Warnings: canon violence, canon language, canon talk of death, methods of kill
Authorâs Note: I do not own anything from Criminal Minds. All credit goes to their respective owners. If there are any warnings that exceed the normal death/kills from the show, I will list them. If youâve seen the show, then itâs the same level of angst unless otherwise stated
x
With the police on edge at being shot at, your team was called in for backup/help. They know you and Spencer are in here, but they don't know exactly what's going on. Hotch made sure to coordinate with the commander in charge only because he knows Hotch has two agents on the inside.
"Dave, they've left the choice of negotiators up to me," Hotch says to his friend.
The police and FBI have set up camp on the edge of the property so that they can be there in a flash if needed.
"I taught most of the hostage negotiation unit. Do you want a recommendation?"
"I'm making you the lead negotiator. Why go to the students when I have the teacher?"
"Because the teacher is emotionally involved, so is the agent in command," Rossi sighs.
"I know I am. This is a unique situation. We have two agents who could affect the outcome on the inside."
"True, but I can't be objective! I know them too well."
"This outcome depends as much on our ability to predict the moves of Y/N and Reid as Cyrus. That's why you're the best man for the job."
"Assuming that Reid and Y/N are still in a condition to make moves."
"I know how bad this is. That's why I want you doing the talking."
"Alright," Rossi finally gives in.
One of the sector members, Nathan Cole, approaches Hotch and Rossi with an angry look on his face.
"You're obviously not in charge. I can see that! I demand to know why I wasn't told that the FBI was sending undercover agents into the Septarian Ranch!"
"The only thing that you're in the position to demand is a lawyer," Hotch glares.
"Who the hell are you?"
"I'm Aaron Hotchner, Unit Chief. I'm the guy who's gonna tell the Attorney General of the United States whether to charge you with obstructing a federal investigation or negligent homicide."
"You can't talk to me like that."
"Get off my crime scene," Hotch says coldly.
Nathan Cole knows that if he stays, he will be arrested. To avoid that, he has no choice but to leave. Hotch finds the true person in charge, Dan Torre, who knows more about this than anyone else.
"You know Dave Rossi. I assume introductions aren't needed," Hotch says to Dan.
"We've been here before, haven't we?" Rossi chuckles.
"Waco. Ruby ridge. Freeman standoff. Let's hope someone listens to you guys this time."
"Oh, they did more than listen. They put us in charge."
"Bring us up to speed."
"I've sent the state police packing. They started this mess. We lost a man in the process. Hope that's okay."
"If you hadn't, we would've."
"Good. County sheriffs have had no run-ins with the sect. So, we're using them as support. We've had no contact with them so far. They've got solar power which we can shoot out the panels if you think--"
"No. That's an escalation," Rossi cuts him off.
"Okay, but that means they have access to the news."
"I'll get JJ to talk to the press. Are your men ready to be briefed?" Hotch asks, and Dan nods. "Let's go."
Hotch, Rossi, and Dan head inside the small trailer where Derek, Emily, and the rest of Dan's men are gathered.
"This is how we're going to do things," Rossi starts. "I call this the 'minimal loss scenario'. Every person we get out is a life saved. We won't save them all. All of us have to be prepared to accept that situation."
"Cults are structured like pyramids. You got the leader at the top, the diehard believers beneath, and the biggest group--the base--followers or the women and children. These are the people we can save," Derek adds.
"The 'trickle, flow, gush' strategy is designed to get base followers out. First, one or two, then three or four, and then as many as we can as fast as we can. If at any point it starts to go bad, we go in. The leaders are charismatic sociopaths who target those most susceptible to their seduction. They have the ability to see what each person needs, and then they become that thing. We have to undermine their perception that we're an invading army laying siege to their home."
"We'll lose the fatigues. Will rancher's clothes work for ya? Like we did at the Freeman standoff?" Dan asks.
"That's perfect. Anything we can do to demilitarize the situation," Rossi nods.
The next step is actually calling Ben and trying to negotiate, which takes some time. Ben has a secure line that is hard to get into, but once he does, Rossi is able to make a call to him. However, who picks up isn't what Rossi expects.
"Hello?" Rossi asks when no one speaks.
"You killed my mom and daddy. Are you going to kill me too?" the little girl that Jessica was holding asked.
"No one is going to kill you, honey," Rossi sighs.
There is a pause, and someone else takes the phone.
"This is Benjamin Cyrus. Who am I talking to?"
"David Rossi, an FBI agent. We sent the state police away. There's just us and the local sheriff. All we want to do is resolve this before anyone else gets hurt."
"Then leave us alone."
"I'm afraid we can't do that, Benjamin. One of the police bled out on the way to the hospital. So, let's just stop this before things get worse. Please, just put down your guns and come out."
"We're believers, Dave. We believe that God says what he means and means what he says. His laws don't depend on what state you live in."
"I have no issues with your beliefs."
"You don't, but the state does."
"I can't answer for other people."
"Oh, God will answer for everyone in the final battle I've foreseen."
"That's why I'm here--to make sure that this is not a battle. Now, the three child services workers--"
"One of them is dead. It wasn't us."
Everyone stops what they are doing. Hotch holds his breath as he waits to hear which one is dead. If you or Spencer is dead, he won't ever forgive himself for it.
"I need a name to inform the family," Rossi says, trying to contain his emotion.
"Her name was Nancy Lunde."
Derek closes his eyes and lets out a silent sigh of relief, and Hotch lowers his head so the others don't see the worry in his eyes.
"Okay. Now, please, Benjamin, send out your wounded. I promise you they'll be well taken care of."
"With enough supplies, we can tend to our own."
"Okay. I need a few hours to put it together. I'll bring them up myself at first light."
Ben hangs up, and Rossi lets out an audible sigh of relief that you and Spencer are okay. It's sad about Nancy, for sure, but both of you are okay... for now.
"You know they can take you hostage, right?" Dan asks.
"I'm going to confirm the kids, Spencer, and Y/N are okay."
"Rossi, let me go with you," Derek begs.
He thinks of you as a sister and Spencer is his best friend. He has to make sure you both are okay.
"No. This is about building trust. I will go alone."
"I want the parabolic arc mics fixed on every window in that structure," Dan says to his men.
"They won't pick up much. They have blinds on all the windows. Unless they're shouting, the glass won't vibrate enough for us to get an audio."
"Well, if they're not shouting, these bugs will pick 'em up, at least until the batteries die. How familiar are agents Y/N and Reid with our playbook?" Dan asks.
"The BAU wrote the CIRG handbook. They'll know that we're trying to get ears in there at all times," Hotch answers.
CIRG stands for Critical Incident Response Group, and they are responsible for providing rapid assistance to incidents in a crisis, such as this one.
"Good. Let's hope they can get these people talking."
"They will."
Your team is here, you can feel them. You overheard Ben talking to someone on the phone, and he could only be talking to one person: Hotch or Rossi. You know they're out there, but you don't know what they're waiting for. Ben told you and Spencer that you could sleep well knowing you'll be safe, but you can't sleep like this.
All the kids are confused, all their parents are panicking, and all of that is being siphoned by you. You're in full-on panic mode, and pushing it down all night has made you jittery. Spencer tries to help however he can without raising an alarm, but you can't accept it at this point. The only thing that will help is if you put distance between you and this entire ranch.
Something is happening when the sun comes up, but you don't know what. When it does finally arrive, you and Spencer are brought to the church where everyone else is. Women, children, men, Ben, and his followers. There's virtually no space between you and Spencer since you need him close for comfort. Spencer has your hand in his, but it's obstructed by your bodies so Ben doesn't see if he were to look over.
Ben is expecting someone to come, and soon, they show. The door to the church opens and Rossi walks in wearing normal clothes, not his FBI outfit. He looks around until his eyes land on yours and Spencer's. He can see how scared you are, but he doesn't acknowledge you in fear it will ruin everything.
He's holding a box full of supplies for Ben, and he welcomes him with a curt nod.
"Dave? I'm Ben. Come on in. These are the children and our guests," Ben says, welcoming him in.
"I'd hope you'd let me take the children."
"No, they're under our protection. They stay for now while I pray for God's guidance. Please don't try to force us out."
"No one's gonna try to force you out of here. Trust me."
"Trust is earned. Tell them I'm not crazy. Tell them I'm just a man living by God's law."
"I will."
Since Rossi has no business being here anymore, he glances over at you as he leaves the church. He knows you two are okay, and you also know that whatever was in that box he brought over, it has something on it that will allow your team to hear what is happening inside. Maybe they have bugs attached to it or whatever, but you know they'll hear everything happening.
"Prepare the wine," Ben says to Chris. "We are celebrating. Everyone drinks. Everyone rejoices because today, we are one day closer to being with Him."
Chris passes out cups with suspicious liquids in them. You refuse to eat or drink anything Ben and his followers hand out, so you politely decline when they pass by you. Luckily, they don't give you a second glance. They had no intention in giving you whatever they're serving, and you're grateful for that.
You look around the church and spot Jessica who looks at Ben with admiration and love. Something isn't adding up. Jessica looks to be in love with him, so why would she make that 911 call? Right next to her is her mother, and as soon as you see her body language, you know exactly who made the call.
"Look at Jessica's body language and the way she looks at him. She literally worships him. There's no way she made that 911 call. I think her mother did," you whisper to Spencer.
"Trust in God with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. Trust in mine," Ben says.
Kathy gets up and tries to block her daughter's view of Ben, but Jessica is quick to look around her.
"Look how she comes between Ben and her daughter. She's inserted herself between them. She made the call so we'd come here and save her."
"Acknowledge him in all things, and he will guide your way. Drink to acknowledge Him, and I will guide our way."
Everyone holds up their glasses, and they all drink to celebrate together. Something isn't right. Ben is too calm. It's like he was waiting for this to happen, and now that it has, he feels vindicated.
"We will be with him soon. We have drank the poison together. Mothers... Fathers... Children... Though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death we fear no evil. For thou are with us. God will wipe the tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death nor sorrow nor crying. There will be no more pain. For all of the former things have passed away."
"He's going to commit mass suicide," you whisper with wide eyes.
Your heart beats faster as your breathing picks up, but Spencer lays a hand on your thigh to calm you down.
"You're letting your panic cloud your judgment. I don't think it's real. I think he's bluffing."
"Why do you think that?"
"Just after he told them about the poison, he waited for them to start to react. Then he nodded to Chris, and he started writing. Look. They're scanning the audience looking for reactions."
He's right. His followers are writing down the names of those who are crying, which shows they aren't loyal to Ben.
"It's a loyalty list, so he knows who will follow him to the end."
After a few moments of silence, Ben speaks again.
"Be still. There was no poison. Instead a test of faith. Because your adversary, the devil, waltzes about as a roaring lion! Choosing whom he may devour. Watch each other for signs of weakness. You are your brother's keeper."
"I can't take this anymore, Spencer. I want to go home," you whisper and look up at him.
"I know it's overwhelming for you. I know you're scared, but you can't freak out. If you do, you, me, and other people might die. Just look at me when you're feeling this way. I'm right here."
He's right. You have to pull yourself together. You'd slap yourself if you weren't frozen to your seat. Whatever plan Rossi has, he better do it fast because you need to get out of here.

Characters & Fandoms I write for;
I am willing to write pairing fics of a character x reader, or general scenario fics with reader inserts.
Reader will be male with he/him pronouns as a default, so please specify if youâd like a female or gender neutral reader!
I will write LGBTQ+ and straight readers & pairings, just let me know what kind of thing you want in your request! I will not write smut.
I am Autistic and have ADHD, I will happily write either of these into fics.
I will write mental health issues, I personally suffer from OCD, CPTSD, Depression, and have previously dealt with ED tendencies, so I can write those with relative ease, request other mental health stuff and Iâll give it a go if I can or let you know if I donât feel able to write it.
Characters not on my list are probably either not there because I donât feel I know the character well enough to write them or am not comfortable writing them as pairings, but itâs always worth checking just in case I forgot to add someone!

You know what? Im taking you up on that clanny! Could i Dave torres x reader where the reader is like never outwardly tired and peppy, and dave just snaps and is like " ...HOW?!" and theres a moment where they just break down and reveal "yeah im faking it, its all an act and im goddamn scared right now. I seriously need a hug"
I tried my best with this haha ^^;
(Note: Big spoilers for the Escape and The Pit episodes ahead!)
........
âDave? Câmon now..â You nudged the nightguardâs shoulder, watching as he abruptly sat upright and looked around, before realizing that you were the one who stirred him awake from his micro-sleep.
With a frown you gazed into his eyes, seeing how exhausted, bleak, and puffy they were. He cried hard earlier after you all had to leave Katie behind. It was such a hard choice to make, but she eventually turned into one of those crazy sleepwalkers and couldâve jeopardized everything had she not locked herself in.
You did comfort Dave while Linda and Mateo were managing things in the planeâs cockpit, though unfortunately crying himself to sleep wasnât an option, obviously. So you just talked to him, snapping him out of his hallucinations that seemed to be getting worse.
You just talked about everything and anything you could: school, work, home life, social life. Whatever came to mind. All the while you kept a smile on your face.
âHow can you keep doing this?â
You blinked in confusion. âDoing what?â
âYou donât seem...tired at all. Here I am fucking microsleeping and...and youâre just here...babbling about everything with that smile of yours.â Dave stared at you, eyebrows furrowed. âHow the hell do you do it? How?!â
Your smile gradually faltered as you listened to his words, slurred from utter exhaustion.
But when he was done, you just sighed shakily, feeling a lump in your throat. âDave....fuck man..I-Iâm so exhausted,â you managed to choke out. âIâm just trying to make all of this l-less shitty but...god Iâm so tired and scared..â
He was surprised to see the tears in your eyes, but he moved closer and wrapped his arms around you. âItâs okay to admit it, [y/n]..weâre all scared. But weâre gonna get through this...together.â
With a sniffle, you hugged him tightly. âI-I hope to god this âwhaleâ is right..â
â...he will be. I swear it.â

Please pay attention to what letters are next to the egos! I will not write for them outside of the set categories. Theyâre also subject to change! I leave that to my own discretion. I may not be comfortable writing a full fic or drabble of a character, but short situational headcanons may be available. Just look for asterisks.Â
Will Not Write Under Any Circumstance: comfort for x insecurity or x disability beyond generic chronic fatigue/pain. This isnât me trying to say that you arenât valid to want comfort for these things, here is just not the place to ask for that. Makes me hella uncomfy and hyper-aware of myself.
These are open for drabbles, fics, or headcanons! I will always default to gender neutral unless otherwise specified!Â
These work for Ego x Reader, Multi!Ego/Poly x Reader, Ego x Ego, or just Ego.

Paradise
A Dave Torres x Reader one shot thing Idk
Cw: Smut, Angst or smth
Dave awoke to Linda shaking him awake.
âDave, wake up. Weâre here.â Linda said. Dave sat up and looked around.
âWhere are we?â Dave questioned, looking at his surroundings.
âWelcome home.â The Whale said with a smile, a cigarette loose from his lips.
The boat docked and the group stepped out onto the terrain. A large and vast forest, hidden from the rest of the world. Trees taller than you could ever imagine. The aura of this place was peaceful, similar to that of a hidden paradise.
The group walked down a dirt pathway from the dock. Bird could be heard around them. The closer they got to the main village, the more human activity could be heard.
They continued down the pathway, walking past farmers and gardeners. All seemed to greet them kindly, with a wave and a smile.
âThis place is beautiful.â Linda commented, following the group but still looking at her surroundings.
âYeah. It really isâ Dave agreed. The Whale just let out a little chuckle.
The pathway lead to a main hut. The roof was made of wood and large leaves from the surrounding nature. It was relatively large, as to fit the population in when The Whale called for a meeting.
The Whale whispered something to his son, and his son ran off, seemingly to go find someone.
âSo is there any electricity down here?â Dave asked, genuinely curious to learn more about his surroundings.
âMy people have lived naturally for generations. We donât require electricity to live.â The Whale replied, throwing his cigarette onto the ground and mashing it with hit boot.
Before Dave could question anything else, you came running in with the Son.
âI found them!â The son said.
âThank you.â The Whale pat his son on the shoulder. The Whale turned to you. âY/N, meet Dave and Linda. Iâd like you to take them around the jungle and to their huts.â He instructed.
âYes sir.â You bowed your head in respect.
You, Dave, and Linda set off on another dirt trail.
âY/N, if you donât mind me asking, howâd you end up here?â Linda asked, walking alongside you.
âMy ancestors were from here.â You answered, looking over at Linda. âWhen people started dropping dead, I ended up making my way back here.â You shrugged.
âSo do you know the language? I heard people talking but I couldnât quite understand anything.â Now Dave was talking.
âI know the language, yeah, just not how to speak itâ You responded again.
As the day passed, you took Dave and Linda around a good portion of the jungle. You taught them about the animals around and the culture of the natives that lived here.
***
Soon, weeks passed by. You and Dave had become close friends. You two shared stupid stories of events that happened before the demon takeover. To be quite honest you had gained a crush on the guy, yet you didnât say anything. He didnât seem to be that interested in you anyway.
It was sunset. The villagers were starting to back up to their huts for the night. You were down in the library-esque hut. You were planning on making a move tonight. You knew a peaceful and silent spot in the jungle.
Soon, the majority of the villagers were asleep. You peaked out the hut. You silently made your way out the building and down to Daveâs hut. You knocked on the door to check if he was awake.
Dave opened the door and smiled seeing you.
âY/N? Whatâs the occasion? Youâre usually heading to bed at this time.â He let out a small chuckle.
âI wondered if you wanted to go exploring.â You shrugged. âI mean you could always say no.â
âIâd love too. Just let me put my shoes on.â
Once Dave had his shoes on, you both set off. You held his hand as you guided him down an old path. Occasionally you had to swipe away a hanging branch or a swarm of gnats in the air. The trip was filled with casual small talk, âHowâs your day been, What have you been up to?â Shit like that.
The path opened up to a clearing. Bioluminescent berries hang from the trees. A river ran softly through the clearing. The stars reflected off the water like glitter. The moon illuminated the two of you just enough to make you look like you both were glowing.
âWow. This place is beautiful.â Dave murmured and turned to you, expecting you to be staring around at the water or the berries, but instead your eyes were locked onto him.
âIâm, uh, glad you like it.â You smile and clear your throat.
âSo how come you decided to take me out tonight?â Dave asked, his gaze catching yours.
âTo be honest, I needed to talk to you.â
âAbout?â
âPromise me you wonât freak out.â
âYouâre making me nervous.â Dave gave you that same stupid smile he always did, making your heart flutter. It was always the little things that made you all nervous.
âI like you.â You stated plainly. Dave stood there, looking confused.
âI like you too? Thatâs why weâre friendâ
âNo, dumbass, in the other way. Like⊠like a Romeo and Juliet way or something.â
âOh.â Dave shifted his weight and looked down.
âListen, you can say you donât like me back and I can take you back.â You say, ready to leave if need be.
âNo no. I just wasnât expecting this.â Dave looked back up. âI like you too.â He gently held your hands.
After a moment of silence with you both just gazing at each other, Dave connected his lips with yours. It was a passionate kiss, with his hands moving to your face. Your hands found his face, holding it gently. Your thumb stroked his cheek.
After a few seconds, you both pulled away for a breath of air. Then you dove back together, this time more intense. His hands found their way to your waist. Yours ran down his chest and over his shoulders.
Daveâs lips started to drift from your mouth to your neck, leaving soft kisses along the skin. You leaned your head back to rest on the tree behind you. He lifted your shirt off you and continued his trail of gentle kisses along your body.
The two of you ended up in the soft grass near the river. Both naked and exposed. You left gentle kisses on Daveâs scars and along other places. The both of you were like two tender lovers, connecting under the moonlight.
Dave was on top of you now, his face looming close to yours. He snatched your lips into a kiss as he entered you. You sighed against his lips, hugging him close to your body. His forehead rested against yours, the both of you in complete euphoria with each other. Every thrust of his hips left you wanting more. Every little noise he made sounded like a beautiful song. Your nails dug into his back, tugging him closer. Sweet nothings were whispered between the two of you. Little phrases that showed how much you both cared.
Eventually, hours went by, the two of you growing exhausted from all the activity. After one final high, he pulled out and laid beside you. You looked over at him. The two of you just lay there cuddling, indulging in each otherâs company.
It had been silent for a while. Both of you were half asleep until you spoke up.
âDave⊠I have something else to tell you.â You muttered, looking up at his face. He looked down at you, a puzzled look on his face.
âWhat is it?â He asked, running his hand up and down your back in a comforting manner.
âIâm going under tomorrow.â
Those words made his actions still. Since the Whale was old, and the land needed to be protected, they would take villagers out to fall asleep and give warnings to other people through dreams. The thing was, if you werenât protected enough, there ran a risk of you getting caught by the demons instead.
âCouldnât someone else go instead?â
âI promise you Iâll be okay. Iâll come back once everything is over. And then we can have a picnic or something when I do get back.â You held one of his hands reassuringly and brought it to your lips, kissing his knuckles.
âPromise to me that youâll come back.â Dave leaned down and kissed the top of your head.
âI promise.â
***
The night went by, and when morning came, you and Dave were back in the village.
After breakfast, you got ready to leave. You hugged Dave one last time, and shared a long kiss before separating from him, heading to the docks, and sailing away with a few of the others; Unsure of if anyone would ever hear from you again.

Mr. Sandman
Dave Torres x Reader
Words: 2910
Summary: In an impossible situation, you remember the night before everything changed while you try to stay awake.Â
Notes:Listen, the last one was a treat, but I had to do something angsty. You know me. I like pain too much. Enjoy!Â
-
If you could just rest your eyes for a second, you would be okay. You could lean your head back, close your eyes and-
âY/N.â
A hand on your cheek snapped you out of your exhaustion.Â
âHey.â The voice was panicked. âHey, open your eyes. Y/N, open your eyes.â
âIâm awake, Dave,â you sighed, feeling everything weighing on your limbs again.Â
âThen look at me, baby, please.âÂ
You squinted, finding wide, worried eyes looking into yours.Â
You snorted. âGood morning to you too.â
Dave leaned back, letting his hand fall to his side.Â
âIt isnât funny.â
âWeâre all going to die,â you shrugged. âMight as well laugh a little.â
âDonât say that,â he snapped. His voice shook a little. âYouâre going to be fine.â
You could tell he didnât really believe it either by the way he wouldnât look at you. It didnât matter. He was trying. Which was certainly more than could be said for you.Â
You leaned forward and kissed him. He was still a moment. Surprised. Then, his hand returned to your cheek, slipping back and around to cup the back of your head.Â
Dave pulled back with a small smile, hand still holding your forehead against his.Â
âWhat was that for?â
You kissed him again, this one short and sweet. âFor trying.â
He pulled you into his arms and, for a while, he just held you. Neither of you said anything because there wasnât anything to say.Â
At least you were together, you thought. If last night had gone differently, if your stubbornness and his reluctance hadnât gotten the better of youâŠÂ
Dave didnât want to think about it.Â
He didnât want to think about you lying there, in the bed you shared, not moving.Â
That would be his nightmare.Â
-
âMaybe you should call in.âÂ
âIâm not going to call in.âÂ
âYou look awful.â
âGee, thanks.âÂ
âDave,â you sighed, pulling him closer by his belt loops. âStay. Get some rest.â Before he could argue, you pointed a finger at his chest. âDonât think I havenât noticed you staying up all hours. You canât keep burning the candle at both ends.â
âY/N, we talked about this-â
âDid we?â You put your hands on your hips. âBecause we donât talk about anything, Dave.âÂ
He grabbed his keys, brushing past you on the way to the door. âI donât have time for this argument again.âÂ
âFine.â You couldnât hide the frustration in your voice. But you were tired of not being able to help him because he wouldnât help himself. âIâll see you when you get home.â
He should have just kept walking. He should have just left.Â
Dave stopped at the door, turning back to you with an irritated glare.Â
âYou know,â he said, âyou canât keep trying to fix me just because you canât fix yourself.â
Your mouth fell open, eyes filling with hurt.Â
Daveâs face immediately morphed with regret, but the door shut behind him before he could take it back.Â
-
They were prepping the plane. Matteo was somehow going to fly you all across the world to an island only Dave had ever heard of. A seventeen-hour flight. None of you had slept in over fifty hours. But yeah, nothing too crazy.
âDo you really think we can do this?â You asked.Â
Dave was double-checking his pack and stopped to look up at you. Something in his expression faltered. A flicker of despair swiftly replaced by a desperate hope.Â
âI told you.â He put his things aside to take your hand. âWeâre going to be fine.â
âAye aye, Captain.â You swung your arm up for a mock salute, but the motion made your tired legs buckle. Your feet skidded on the cement like ice sliding on a hot surface. It almost felt like they were giving up, like your body just couldnât hold you anymore.Â
Dave caught you.Â
âTake it easy,â he said, lips at your ear and voice gently. âYouâll want to save your strength for our dance.â
You snorted, still holding onto him. âYou hate dancing.â
âI hate it less when itâs with you.â He pulled you closer and started to sway.Â
âI bet you say that to all the girls, Dream Man.â You moved with him, both of you drifting to music that only existed in your minds.Â
âDream Man?â
âYouâre kinda a superhero now,â you teased. âI thought you should have a name.â
âSo you pick âDream Manâ?âÂ
âHey, donât judge. Itâs difficult enough to form words, let alone be as clever as I am.â You blew out a breath that was almost a laugh. âMost of the time, just talking feels hard.âÂ
âThen letâs not say anything for a while,â Dave said softly.Â
You nodded.Â
And you danced.Â
-
You drove to the dull droning of the voice on the radio. You werenât really listening, just staring out into the night through your cracked windshield. Streetlights blurred by. Tail lights glowed ahead of you. They looked more like the eyes of an animal than a car. No. Not an animal. A hellhound. It stayed just far enough ahead that you couldnât see the vehicle. Just those awful red lights.Â
You tried to remind yourself that the sun would be up soon. You had driven around like that for hours, but you still werenât tired. You werenât angry anymore, though. Your frustration with Dave faded to numbness along with the rest of your thoughts.Â
The car ahead sped up, finally fading into the horizon, where the sun would soon appear. A chill went through you, and you froze. You turned up the radio. It played some synth-heavy 80s tune, but, for a second, you could have sworn you heard your name.Â
You turned the car around.Â
Maybe it was time to go home.
-
Youâd never particularly liked flying. With how much you moved around as a kid, you should have been used to it but you could never shake the anxiety of seeing yourself plummeting down to earth. And now, youâd be flying with a pilot who was as deliriously sleep-deprived as you were.Â
With every step up the stairs, you gripped Daveâs hand tighter. He rubbed circles into your palm with his thumb to help calm you, but you could see the nerves were getting to him too.Â
âHey,â you said with an attempt at a lighthearted tone. âWhat have we got to lose, right?âÂ
Dave brought your hand up to his lips, knowing he had everything to lose as long as he still had you.Â
âRight.âÂ
Linda and Matteo were ready- or, at least, as ready as any of you could have been. Linda claimed her seat, muttering assurances to herself.Â
You and Dave stopped at the cockpit. The two friends exchanged a long, worried glance. They embraced, both of them trying to seem more confident than they felt. When they parted, Dave went to the back with Linda and you put a hand on Matteoâs shoulder.Â
âDonât crash, yeah?â You said.Â
He laughed, but not with his usual humor. âI wonât fall asleep if you donât.â
âDeal.â You gave him a somewhat encouraging pat on the back and went to the back to join the others. You took the seat across from Dave.
His eyelids were heavy, fluttering open and closed.Â
âSeventeen hours,â Linda said, snapping him out of it. She looked at both of you with a hard, determined stare. âWe just have to make it seventeen more hours.â
Dave leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He ran a finger lightly back and forth across your legs.Â
âSeventeen hours.â He repeated.Â
You took a deep breath. âHow hard can it be?â
âI swear to God, if you just jinxed us,â Linda said, âIâll switch out your Modafalyst for sleeping pills.âÂ
The three of you laughed.Â
Then it was quiet again.Â
But it didnât stay quiet. Not for you.Â
A couple hours must have gone by because your muscles were stiff from sitting for so long. You stretched out your arms and legs, biting back a yawn.Â
âHow are you feeling?â Dave asked.Â
âBright-eyed and bushy-tailed.â
He smiled and turned his head toward the window.Â
âSo heâs got you into another mess, huh?â
The new voice made you jump.Â
âAnd now, youâre all going to die.â There, in the seat across the aisle from you, was your sister.Â
âWila?â
She grinned with a maliciousness she always reserved just for you.Â
âYou never got to help me pick one out.â She stood, motioning to the long white dress. âSo I thought now would be a good time.â
âLeave me alone.â
âY/N?â Dave leaned toward you. âBaby, what is it?â
âThere you go, Wila mocked. âYouâll do just about anything for attention, wonât you? Including, but not limited to, hallucinating your dead sister.â
âI never confirmed that you died.âÂ
âAnd you never went to mom and dadâs funeral, but you still know theyâre dead, right?âÂ
âStop it.âÂ
âDo you think Davey here will be like them?â
âI said stop.â You felt your breathing quicken, your heart pounding in your chest.Â
âMaybe this is all your fault.â Wila stepped forward, getting her face right up next to yours no matter how much you tried to pull away. ïżœïżœJust like mommy and daddy.âÂ
âJust go away!â You cried, covering your ears with your hands. âLeave me alone. Leave me alone!â You shut your eyes.Â
âSheâs hallucinating.âÂ
âWe have to do something. Y/N! Y/N, stay with me!âÂ
âY/N⊠Y/N⊠Y/NâŠâ Wila chanted like some demented song.Â
âY/N, itâs okay.â Dave put a hand on your shoulder.Â
You opened your eyes.Â
Wila stood in front of you, her white dress turned red from the sticky blood oozing out of multiple wounds.Â
âSee you soon, little sister.â She lunged. Blood sprayed all over you.Â
âStop!â You sobbed. âNo! Stop it! Leave me alone!â Your screams filled the cabin. You crawled up into your seat, desperate to get away. Cramming yourself against the window, you furiously swiped at your face and clothes to get the imaginary blood off of you.Â
Hands held either side of your face. You tried to fight them, but they were strong. Stronger than your dead sister.Â
âY/N, baby, look at me,â Dave pleaded. âIt isnât real. Come on, look at me.â
Wila faded from your mind.Â
You blinked and found Dave staring at you, dark and tired eyes wide with panic. He had your face cupped in his hands, trying to force you to see him and not whatever demon you were fighting. To see he was there. You were there. Nothing was going to hurt you.Â
Dave watched you come back to yourself. Your lip started to tremble.
He sat beside you, gently pulling you into his lap, his embracing arms the only protection he could offer.Â
âItâs okay,â he soothed. âIâm here. Itâs okay.â He looked at Linda. âHow much longer?â
She sighed, grim. âTen hours.â
Still shaking, you rested your head against his chest as he rocked you in his arms, and screwed your eyes shut.Â
-
He couldnât remember the last time heâd run that fast or that far. His legs wanted to give out, his lungs screamed at him for a break, but Dave didnât let up. He kept running.Â
People were dead. A lot of people.Â
And you werenât answering your phone.
Dave felt the quiet of the street seeping into him like a harsh, burning mist. He couldn't help but draw back to a poem he had to read in school. Heâd never gotten it before.Â
This is the way the world ends.Â
Not with a bag but a whimper.Â
âPlease be there,â Dave begged. âPlease be awake. Please be alive.â
He kept going.Â
What if that was the last thing he said to you? What if you went to sleep thinking you were broken- that he believed you were broken? No. That couldnât be it. He needed another chance.Â
Please let him have another chance.Â
Dave could barely breathe by the time he climbed the stairs, taking them two at a time until he reached the apartment you shared.Â
For a second, all he could do was stand there, heart breaking out of his chest. The terror turned his blood to ice.Â
He opened the door.Â
The apartment was entombed with the same horrible silence as outside.Â
Dave felt tears of panic welling in his eyes.Â
âY/N?â He called out, his voice hoarse and breaking.Â
Nothing.
He stepped forward.Â
âY/N?â He said again, a little louder. âY/N, itâs me. Something happened. Something bad. Where are you?â
Only the silence greeted him.Â
A sob caught in his throat.
âBaby?âÂ
Dave worked up enough courage to look into the bedroom, slowly leaning his head in as his eyes adjusted to the dark room. The curtains were open just enough for a sliver of light to fall on the bed. The empty bed.Â
Dave flipped on the light switch, confusion now mixing with the myriad of other emotions. It added to his already overwhelming fear.Â
What did this mean? Where were you? What if he never found you? What if you were out there, crashed in a ditch from exhaustion, or passed out at some bar, never to wake up?Â
He tried calling you again. Your phone lit up, buzzing on the nightstand. A picture of the two of you- you kissing his cheek while he made a face at the camera- took over the screen.
âGoddamnit,â he said, heart rate spiking even more. Â
Then there was a different sound. The phone stopped vibrating, but another kind of low rumble shook through him. Dave froze.Â
It was a car.Â
By the time you reached the apartment, you knew something had to be wrong. Where was the morning rush? The school buses? The obnoxious power-walking moms and their strollers? It was as though time around you had stopped and you were trapped outside of it.Â
You parked in your usual spot and waited for something. Anything.
âWhat the fuck?â You said to yourself.Â
You got out of the car. The slam of the door rattled in the eerie emptiness that surrounded you.Â
âY/N!âÂ
The door to your building burst open.
âDave?â
His arms were around you before you even realized he was running. He shook around you, holding you tight to him like he was making sure you couldnât disappear.Â
âI thought I lost you,â he cried. âIâm sorry for what I said. Iâm so sorry.â He pulled back only to crash his lips into yours in a desperate, relieved kiss. âI thought I lost you.â
âDave.â You looked into the pure panic in his eyes, the terror in his trembling lips. âWhatâs going on?â
He took a breath.Â
-
There was a chill. Not a bad chill, but enough for you to huddle closer to the man holding you.Â
âItâs beautiful here,â Dave muttered, his lips against your ear.Â
âI thought you would like it,â you sighed contently, listening to the sound of the waves.Â
The cliffside you laid on was lush with green. Wildflowers popped up all around you in calm blues and royal purples. It was beautiful. Even more, it was peaceful. So peacefulâŠ
âHere they come,â Dave said.Â
You turned your head.Â
A bright yellow car creept up the road towards you.Â
You settled back into the arms around you.Â
âIâm glad youâre meeting them.âÂ
âMe too.âÂ
âTheyâre going to love you, you know.â
âI hope so.â
The closer the car got, the more you could make out the song playing on the radio.Â
âMr. Sandman⊠bring me a dream.â
Your parents waved at you.Â
You blinked.Â
âDave.â Looking around, you realized the silence wasnât peaceful at all. It was suffocating. âWhere are we?âÂ
The hold around you tightened.Â
âDave?â
âOh, Y/N.âÂ
His voice changed. It was too deep. It was wrong. So wrong.
âIâm not Dave.â
-
Dave stared out of the window, still clutching you tight against his chest, his hands rubbing soothing circles up and down your back until you stopped trembling against him.Â
âIâve got you,â he whispered. He kissed your forehead.Â
Your head tilted back.
âY/N?â
He loosened his hold and you fell, limp in his arms.Â
âOh shit,â Linda said. She scrambled for her bag.Â
âY/N!â Dave shook your shoulders.Â
Your eyes stayed closed, your chest still.Â
âLinda, do something!âÂ
âIâm trying.â She plunged the adrenaline into your leg.Â
No response.Â
âCome on, baby. Come on.â He laid a hand on your cheek, tapping gently. âPlease, baby.âÂ
Linda sat back, tears traveling solemnly down her face. âDave, IâŠâ
âTry again.â
âDave-â
âDo it again!â His scream echoed through the small cabin just as yours had moments before. He pleaded, âLinda, please.â
It felt like every piece of him was breaking. He drew you to him, burying his face in your neck.
âWake up,â he sobbed. âY/N, wake up.â
Linda decided to give him a moment and went to the front of the plane to tell Matteo. She watched Dave, shaking her head, holding back cries of her own. Sorry wouldnât be enough, so she didnât say it.
Dave rocked back and forth on the floor of the aisle, his tears falling onto your never-opening eyes. He could only whisper, his energy spent, each word more shattered than the last.Â
âPlease wake up.âÂ

For the week of 20 August 2018
Quick Bits:
Aphrodite V #2 is pretty damn great. Jeff Spokesâ artwork is instantly compelling, drawing in the reader with darkness and interesting angles into this increasingly enthralling story of a machine cult from the future by him and Bryan Hill.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
Avengers #6 concludes the first arc in widescreen fashion. Lots of action and big ideas from Jason Aaron with gorgeous art from Ed McGuinness, Paco Medina, Mark Morales, Juan Velasco, and David Curiel. Again Iâm reminded of those early issue of JLA from Grant Morrison and Howard Porter. This has been fun so far and Iâm intrigued by what else they have in store.
| Published by Marvel
Beasts of Burden: Wise Dogs & Eldritch Men #1 is a very welcome return, even without Jill Thompson for this go around. The artwork from Benjamin Dewey is beautiful as he reminds us that heâs one of the best nature artists in comics, and possible beyond. His animals are just stunning. The story from him and Evan Dorkin is also interesting, suggesting some arcane traps luring in the paranormal. Great stuff for all ages.
| Published by Dark Horse
Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack #12 concludes the series with an epic battle between the forces of heaven and hell as it teaches us the true meaning of friendship. Itâs funnier when you actually read it. This has been an entertaining series from John Carpenter, Anthony Burch, Jorge Corona, Gabriel Cassata, and Ed Dukeshire, with this final chapter also delivering a nice farewell to the movie as well.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Black Hammer: Age of Doom #4 has some very interesting revelations that ultimately only lead to more questions than answers. Whatâs going on isnât nearly as cut and dried as we were led to believe last issue and the mystery has just deepened. Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, Dave Stewart, and Todd Klein have managed to elevate this story higher again.
| Published by Dark Horse
Black Panther #3 finally parcels out a tidbit of what might actually be going on with the series and the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, just in time for a surprise attack and more action. Thankfully, the art from Daniel Acuña is still overwhelmingly gorgeous.
| Published by Marvel
Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #2 is even better than the first issue. The mystery deepens as Antonius and Achillia reach Egypt and find incongruities they donât expect within this province of the Roman Empire. The artwork from Robert Gill (with colours from JosĂ© Villarrubia) is probably among the best Iâve seen from him, really bringing some very strong work here with backgrounds, vehicles, and character designs that are particularly impressive.
| Published by Valiant
Cold Spots #1 is the start to another horror series from Cullen Bunn, this time accompanied by Mark Torres with the artwork, and as per many of Bunnâs previous tales, this is a great start. Thereâs a genuinely creepy atmosphere from Torresâ art and the plot of a missing daughter and her child, amidst the spooky maybe-ghosts, is a good one.
| Published by Image
Daredevil #607 gets into how there can possibly be a Mike Murdock running around New York and itâs an interesting and possibly hazardous diversion. Gorgeous art from Phil Noto.
| Published by Marvel
Die!Die!Die! #2 is more entertaining over-the-top humorous action that feels like itâs channelling Garth Ennis. Great art from Chris Burnham and Nathan Fairbairn.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Hunt for Wolverine: Mystery in Madripoor #4 is probably the most succinct in sticking to its plot without real deviation of all of these minis. Basically sticking to the thread of these X-women tackling the Femme Fatales. Itâs been a relatively decent story from Jim Zub, Thony Silas, and Felipe Sobreiro, even if the artâs been a little uneven. Thereâs a really nice sequence of Psylocke finding herself again in this issue, though, from Leonard Kirk and Andrew Crossley that has interesting implications going forward.
| Published by Marvel
Jughead: The Hunger #8 is a great jumping-on point for new readers, offering a bit of a history lesson and summary reinterpretation of the events of the overarching plot of the series to date. Great work from Frank Tieri, Pat & Tim Kennedy, Joe Eisma, Bob Smith, Ryan Jampole, Matt Herms, Andre Szymanowicz, and Jack Morelli.
| Published by Archie Comics / Archieâs Madhouse Presents
The Life of Captain Marvel #2 continues what is shaping up to be possibly one of the defining and quintessential Carol Danvers stories. I love what Margaret Stohl is doing in bringing out the backstory and interpersonal dynamics of Carolâs family. The art from Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz, and Marcio Menyz in the present day and Marguerite Sauvageâs flashbacks is wonderful.
| Published by Marvel
Mr. & Mrs. X #2 continues this fun ride, tossing in Deadpool and more of the lesser used intergalactic X-characters. The dialogue from Kelly Thompson is hilarious and the art from Oscar Bazaldua and Frank DâArmata is great.
| Published by Marvel
Old Man Logan #46 begins another arc tying up loose ends before the endgame of Dead Man Logan kicks off. Wrapping reconnecting with Alpha Flight around a horror story evoking shades of The Thing and Slither results in a wonderful story perfectly fitting Damian Coucieroâs artwork.
| Published by Marvel
The Punisher #1 is both a continuation of Matthew Rosenbergâs stories and ideas from the last volume of the series and a kind of back-to-basics approach to Frank Castle. Basically, heâs lost the War Machine suit, but heâs still taking on the world-spanning super-villains. Itâs pretty epic and this is great jumping-on point. The dark humour is perfect, reminding me of Garth Ennisâ work with Castle, and seriously this is probably the best art that Szymon Kudranski has ever done. Along with Antonio Fabelaâs colours, itâs like he was born to draw The Punisher.
| Published by Marvel
Royal City #14 is an introspective end of saying farewell to the past and accepting change to move forward. This has been an interesting series from Jeff Lemire, focusing on his most often used theme of family, and itâs been a good exploration of their different dynamics.
| Published by Image
The Sentry #3 is pretty dark, telling the flipside of the first two issues from Billy Turnerâs perspective as he goes about stealing Sentryâs identity. This is almost at Kid Miracleman levels of demented. Jeff Lemire is playing with some interesting ideas here, beautifully brought to life by Kim Jacinto, Joshua Cassara, and Rain Beredo.
| Published by Marvel
Shadowman #6 has some truly beautiful artwork from Renato Guedes, as this arc of Jack falling through time visiting the different holders of the shadow loa takes an interesting turn in ancient history.
| Published by Valiant
Shanghai Red #3 is probably the best issue to date, as Molly reunites with Katie, recriminations are hashed out, and we get a bit of a tour of Portland. Christopher Sebela, Joshua Hixson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou have tapped into something unique here, and this tale of revenge and some of the lesser told side of American history is incredibly compelling.
| Published by Image
TMNT #85 brings Leatherhead back into the fold, with very interesting and potentially dangerous ramifications following the war between the Utroms and Triceratons. Brahm Revelâs clothes-peg take on the Turtles is an interesting visual choice.
| Published by IDW
The Thrilling Adventure Hour #2 I find better than the first issue. The humour hits home a bit more for me and the leads of Sadie and Frank donât seem nearly as insufferable as the first issue. The art, though, from MJ Erickson and Brittany Peer is just as good as the first. Entertaining stuff.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Venom #5 is another great issue. The mythology-building in this series is just incredible, growing Venom and his world into so much more. Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles are creating magic.
| Published by Marvel
West Coast Avengers #1 is a great debut, filled with action and humour, as this highly dysfunctional team comes together. Itâs nice to see Kelly Thompson doing more Hawkeye and Hawkguy, and the collection of characters coming together to make up the team are bizarre and fitting, carrying on a few of the themes and plot developments of the previous Hawkeye and America series. Though you neednât have read any of that before you pick this up. Making it nigh unmissable is the gorgeous art from Stefano Caselli and Triona Farrell. This is fun.
| Published by Marvel
Witchblade #7 returns for its second arc, continuing the extremely high level of quality that Caitlin Kittredge, Roberta Ingranata, Bryan Valenza, and Troy Peteri set for themselves.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
X-Men Red #7 advances us a bit further as the X-Men attempt to uncover evidence of Cassandra Novaâs influence on the world and thwart her attack on Atlantis. Tom Taylor has definitely been taking a slow approach to unfurling this story, but it has allowed for the beautiful art from originally Mahmud Asrar and now Carmen Carnero & Rain Beredo time to breathe.
| Published by Marvel
Other Highlights: Amazing Spider-Man #4, Avengers: Wakanda Forever #1, Barbarella #9, Bedtime Games #3, Betty & Veronica: Vixens #9, Curse Words Summer Swimsuit Special #1, Days of Hate #7, DuckTales #11, Gasolina #11, Hack/Slash: Resurrection #10, Hit-Girl #7, Jim Hensonâs Labyrinth: Coronation #6, Lumberjanes #53, Mammon, Mickey Spillaneâs Mike #3, Nightâs Dominion - Season Three #2, Old Man Hawkeye #8, Quantum & Woody! #9, Red Sonja/Tarzan #4, Redneck #14, Stairway - Volume 1, Star Wars: Darth Vader #20, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #23, Sullivanâs Sluggers, TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Hit the Road #4, Wasted Space #4
