Here are the transcriptions of the Backstory for Rook's factions in the Character Creator (with the different pronouns available + surnames):
GREY WARDENS
Surname: Thorne
BACKSTORY
Shield Against the Night
When innocent lives were at stake, Rook led the charge, saving a village from a monstrous nightmare--no matter the cost to herself/himself/themselves.
During a large darkspawn incursion, Rook was ordered to hold the line with other Grey Wardens until reinforcements arrived. Rook argued that by then, villagers under attack would be dead. She/He/They disobeyed orders, leading the squad into the incursion and sealing the tunnel to the Deep Roads. This turned the tide, and the darkspawn were driven off, which saved the villagers. Rook's heroism was popular among the younger Wardens, but others with connections to noble families resented her/his/their independent streak. Rook chose to step away while tempers cooled.
VEIL JUMPERS
Surname: Aldwir
BACKSTORY
Hunter of Secrets
When lives were at stake, Rook defied orders to rescue people from the mystic perils of Arlathan.
On an expedition to ruins in Arlathan Forest, the Veil jumpers found ruins that contained important lost lore and deadly danger. Barely surviving the ruins' ancient magical defenses, Rook's small team recovered and invaluable map leading to a hidden area of the forest. Although the team escaped, other Veil Jumpers found themselves trapped. Rook chose to return to the ruins, saving her/his/their teammates' lives, but losing the map. She/He/They was/were lauded for her/his/their bravery, but the map's loss caused some resentment among Veil Jumper leaders.
SHADOW DRAGONS
Surname: Mercar
BACKSTORY
Breaker of Bonds
Rook risked everything to liberate the enslaved people of Tevinter, even knowing it would anger the ruling elite.
The foundling Rook was adopted into a military family and joined the Shadow Dragons to fight from the shadows for change in Minrathous. While guarding a visiting dignitary who was investigating a slavery ring in the nearby city of Nessus, Rook concluded that the mission would fail without throwing caution to the wind. Alone, she/he/they sneaked the dignitary deep into Venatori-controlled zones and brought him back, along with the rescued slaves. These actions brought Rook to the Venatori's attention, and the Shadow Dragons decided to keep Rook out of sight.
LORDS OF FORTUNE
Surname: Laidir
BACKSTORY
Seeker of Gold and Glory
When a corrupt Rivaini noble double-crossed Rook, Rook escaped a collapsing ruin, turned the tables, and destroyed a dangerous artifact.
A rising Lord of Fortune, skilled at breaking into lost tombs and ruins, Rook killed a corrupt Rivaini noble to prevent an ancient evil from being given to the Venatori. Her/His/Their actions were correct and saved the lives of expedition members, but some Rivaini nobles were resentful. Because the success of the Lords' expeditions relied on Rivaini authorities looking the other way, it seemed wise for Rook to step away while tempers settled.
MOURN WATCH
Surname: Ingellvar
BACKSTORY
Defender of the Dead
When restless spirits threatened the inhabitants of the Grand Necropolis, Rook took the decisive action to protect both the living and the dead.
Discovered by undead inside a Grand Necropolis tomb as an infant, Rook was raised by Mourn Watch necromancers, eventually joining the order. During a "civil war" between undead nobility, known later as the War of the Banners, she/he/they led a daring attack on the rebellion's dueling leaders. It was a success, quelling the war and saving lives. But Rook's destruction of these undead nobles was controversial. Some Mourn Watchers feared Rook had offended the order's aristocratic patrons and encouraged her/him/them to travel for a while.
ANTIVAN CROWS
Surname: de Riva
BACKSTORY
Assassin Extraordinaire
When the invaders of Treviso took people captive, Rook was determined to free the prisoners at any cost.
A talented new Crow recently promoted to full membership, Rook chafed at the cautions of her/his/their commanders, especially with her/his/their city occupied by brutal soldiers known as the Antaam. When Rook saw a patrol herding along captives one night, she/he/they leaped into action. Despite saving lives, however, Rook had unknowingly compromised a larger Crow operation against the Antaam. Rook's superiors were incensed. Sidelined for her/his/their actions, the young assassin searched for new ways to prove herself/himself/themselves.

Scheming for my Rook… I was already thinking Grey Warden dwarf, but especially after the gameplay trailer kind of obsessed with a girlfailure who thinks she’s going to be the next Hero of Ferelden and immediately accidentally unleashes two evil gods. Thinks her own adventure will be just like the stories, not realizing that stopping the Blight was horrific for everyone involved. Immediately disillusioned by her own impulsivity.
Also probably two-handed warrior bc I need a big sword.

.| Grier “Rook” Thorne | Saboteur | Rogue | Tool Maker |.
.Grier went by the given nickname of Rookie from the first day of his Warden conscription, one which all others outgrew, and he did not, instead shortening it to Rook when the novelty ran out.
.As the eleventh son of Admiral Therasia Thorne of the Sea Ships, Grier was given captaincy at the young age of fourteen, having proven a keen tactical mind and an adventurous heart. He co-captained a small selection of frigates with his older brother Galo, which served as an arm of their mother’s fleet. Their purpose was to raid mercantile ships along the eastern coast of Thedas, and it was Grier who took the initiative to lead them into bell diving and tomb delving; there was treasure waiting in places others couldn’t get to, and Grier was apt at figuring out how he could.
.This forward thinking would be the seed of a constant one-up-man-ship between the siblings, with Grier enjoying the competition and Galo becoming more and more irritated with his much younger brother. Eventually it would accumulate into Grier stealing Galo’s most precious treasure; his wife Aadiyah. A three month affair led to the birth of Grier’s sixth illegitimate child, and years later his own arrest at the hand of Galo’s schemes.
.Survived by his now nine bastard children, Grier was set upon the gallows in Amaranthine. His list of crimes ever grew into him taking the blame for many of Galo’s own activities alongside his own, and his reputation as a warmongering raider was tied around his neck as much as his noose. It would only be good fortune that he was conscripted by a man he had helped some years before, the Warden Commander looking to flee the grasping hands of the Inquisition as it formed in its early months.
.It would be at his Joining where he decided to keep his past to himself, denying all others the attempt to know his name should word somehow reach the ears of his family. He remains as a Junior Warden, despite serving in the order for several years, due to his insubordination and reputation for acting against direct orders.

ignore this post if you're tired of reading anything abt transphobes complaining about trans ppl (and top surgery scars) in dragon age, but:
David Gaider, the creator of the Dragon Age setting and veteran writer at BioWare (no longer working there, he didn't write for DATV), has given some reasoning as to why top surgery scars can be justified in the world of Thedas. Here are his posts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You want this to be about the top scars? OK, let's go. 1) There's no evidence that shapeshifting can selectively, and permanently, alter body parts. Even if it could, shapeshifters can only alter themselves. Morrigan cannot turn other people into spiders." "2) Even if other magic could alter body parts permanently, and there's no evidence this is the case, not everyone has access to it. One cannot walk into a Circle of Magi and go "remove boobs plz"." "3) If your issue is "why not heal?", healing magic also does not do everything. Scars exist. Why does Cassandra have a scar on her chin? If anyone could go "heal scar plz", it'd be her. Recognize there's a difference between the way it works in gameplay and lore, with healing as many other things." "4) If your issue is "how surgery exist?", you're probably looking at our own medieval world. Thedas is, at best, quasi-medieval. There are SO MANY instances of things that, in our world, didn't exist until the Renaissance or even later. It's not our medieval world and never tried to be." "But it's not about the top scars, is it? You've been presented with new information and you just don't like it. You don't want it. Like anyone who balked at the qunari change in DA2. So you try to make it about inconsistency because you feel that's stronger than this just being about YOUR biases."
source: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]
I know that if you're pro-trans (or just normal) you understand all of this, but still. This is literally coming from the person who created Dragon Age. He defends the existence of both top surgery and its scars with a watsonian reasoning. At least this in-world explanation might be valuable for some people. That such a significant person behind Dragon Age justifies to you directly why this decision can make sense in such a world. And even from a POV that's pro-trans, it's cool to hear the in-world reasoning from someone that knows the setting better than anyone.
Overall I'm glad he's openly defending it because even if it's logical it's also nice that he speaks about it when he doesn't have to, especially since he's not involved in this project anymore. Idk if all of them, but it's nice to see that the devs are overall so trans-friendly. And nicer to see that there are trans devs to start with involved in the game.
And this whole thing is bigger than it should be, but the reality that not only people are still transphobic, but most big games simply don't have top surgery scars at all. Some have trans options, but they're still incredibly binary and restrictive, like BG3 and Cyberpunk 2077 (I like both of those games a lot, but being able to give a very stereotypically masculine character a vulva and vice-versa, or even worse, having that situation but the character's voice be directly related to pronouns, is not good enough. It shows a lack of care and understanding of trans people. And in BG3's case at least you can independently change voice and also go by they/them, but even then. Overall, it's good that those games went in that direction and that you could in that way be trans at all, but it was still not good at all. It was like saying "you are allowed to be trans, but only in this very passing, gender-conforming way and binary way." I feel like in this case, DATV's approach is one of the best I can think of so far, so in that sense I'm grateful (and apparently you can also say in the game that you're trans, which if that's true, that's great.) And this doesn't mean that the CC couldn't be better and more inclusive in a lot of other ways, but this is decent at least for trans characters.
So anyway, it's nice to have top surgery scars in CC. I hope at some point trans people will stop being targeted in this way and that it can be just something that's in the overwhelming majority of games, and done respectfully, and that people just leave us alone. Also wishing the same for POC, women, and people with any condition they decide is woke like... having vitiligo I guess.

Jonesing so badly for Veilguard's character creator from @bioware that I made my Rook in Inquisition's creation suite, messy hair and all.
---
Backstory if you didn't see my other post.
In the city elf origin, Tabris can tell these two little kids (a boy and a girl) a story about an elven hero - it's the first story EITHER child has ever heard about a heroic elf. (Minutes later the city elf origin kicks into gear).
I HC that this was life-changing for the little girl, and she decides to follow in the footsteps of the most successful person to ever come from the Denerim Alienage. (And yes, like her idol, her destiny crosses paths with the Grey Wardens)
At this point in time, she's trying to protect her family and friends who didn't abandon Denerim's alienage - or 'elven district' in the wake of population shifts and cultural swings in the last decade - in the wake of the losses from the blight and the war as well as those who entered it having sought it for safety.
She's a couple years out from running afoul of some nobles herself, leading her directly into the path of the Wardens - but eventually, into the path of Varric Tethras.
