TUMBLR 101: a helpful guide for tiktok refugees

are YOU a former tiktok user trying to learn how to use tumblr to fill the void the american tiktok ban is leaving in your soul? here are some things you should know, from someone who’s going on their eighth year on this hellsite:

1. you can say anything on here. gone are the days of having to use words like “unalive” and “seggs.” murder! kill! sex! fuck! speak your mind!

2. there is a community for you on here. regardless of what you’re into or however small the fandom is, you have a place here. at least one other person will have heard of your weird obscure interest. strike up a conversation!

3. followers don’t matter. tumblr is one of the last remaining social media sites in which your number of followers means absolute jack shit. this can be disorienting at first, but once you lean into the fact that everyone on this website is equal, it’s very freeing. clout means nothing here.

4. similarly, you can post at any time. while tiktok has an algorithm that favors certain times, tumblr has no such algorithm. post whatever you want, whenever you want. every post has virtually the same chance at getting notes, regardless of when it is posted.

5. tags can have spaces between the words! this one is very exciting. tags can be a whole sentence. you can also use the tags to comment on someone’s post without actually adding onto the physical post itself (which is sometimes frowned upon and called “derailing” if you use this feature to bring up a completely different point other than the one that’s being made on the original post).

TL;DR: speak your mind, find your place, followers don’t matter, post anytime, have fun with tags!! tumblr is a wonderful site used to share things you’re excited about. be patient with yourself as you’re learning and have fun!

one of the most frustrating things about the neil gaiman situation (and others like it) is people who were fans immediately moving to a different person to idolise ('well, at least we still have x author' or 'please tell me y author is still a good person') and in this situation specifically, 'terry pratchett would be furious'. no!!! you do not know!!!you have no idea whether terry pratchett or any author you like was/is a predator! you cannot take a situation in which a man's public persona as a feminist and supporter of women allowed him to prey on vulnerable women without suspicion and then look at all the other men who portray themselves as good people and say 'well, these ones are still okay though.' just stop idolising celebrities!!!!!!!

why not to use project elvhen

because the other two posts were a bit cluttered, here’s a compilation of reasons why not to support fenxshiral and not to use project elvhen in your work:

fenxshiral intentionally wrote elvhen to be ace/arophobic. the word in his project for aromanticism is equivalent to the word for psychopath. any attempts at disputing his justification for that are just met with him saying it’s his headcanon/him calling people countering him “drama”.

“ In terms of aromanticism, this is a concept that would be very hard to parse in Elvhen, because the language revolves around poetry, thought, emotion and only speaking when you mean what you say. Not being able to feel love would be a concept very foreign to the vast majority of Elves “ <- he thinks elves are too “~~poetic and romantic~~” to accept people who “are unable to feel love”, which is a really poor definition of aromanticism, as it implies they can’t feel ANY love, and must be incapable of a romantic relationship, rather than just not wanting it. It also doesn’t make sense that elves would shun people who can be close to others without feeling romantically for them, because Dirthamen and Falon’Din are a thing.

“ The sad reality, is that the vast majority of Elves, both in Elvhenan and in the Dalish, would most likely look upon aromanticism as a mental disorder. Emotion is such a strong centerpiece of the language, that being unable to feel any emotion would be viewed as just plain wrong by a vast majority of elves. “

Assumes that the Dalish wouldn’t have a renaissance like the elvhen had, assuming that heteronormativity/gender binaries/etc. are the starting point for all cultures and the Dalish must be at that point because “dragon age cultures are close-minded”. Even though, canonically, sexuality in thedas is shown to not be a huge deal, and relationships which are still commonly hated today are readily accepted/common in-universe. Kind of rings like he views nomadic peoples as primitive imo, which - considering he’s white - is a red flag.

Does not believe that thinking someone is broken because of their sexuality and trying to fix them is a form of hate. (Even though Dorian’s entire plotline is about his dad thinking he’s broken and trying to fix him and how intention doesn’t compensate for action.)

Treats Lesbians/Gay people wanting homosexual-specific terminology like a burden he was worn down by, because it’s really really important to him that elves not have words for homosexuality, apparently.

“homosexuality is accepted through every culture in thedas (except nobility who use marriage to promote specific family lines) but the dalish would hate gay people because everyone knows gays can’t have kids.” Invents reasons why the dalish wouldnt support gay marriage - which, joke’s on him, with the whole sera/inq marriage lmao.

“ With that said, in clans that valued marriage, it would be a construct used to facilitate children in addition to the bond between the two partners. Its value wouldn’t be the concept of marriage itself, so homosexual marriages would not carry the same kind of weight, and would most likely not be allowed, except in polygamous/polyamorous marriages (in clans that allowed such unions, of course).” literally when has dalish marriage ever been about kids. ever. when is this shown ever and why is he using it to justify them abolishing gay marriage.

he has bdsm fantasies about him dominating his tumblr followers (nsfw warning obvs)

tags female-on-female sex as “lesbian” on his nsfw blog, because only lesbians have sex with other women.

he also accepts nudes from teenage (18+, but still teenage) girls, even though he’s nearly 30. (nsfw warning on 1st link)

He’s even commented on how he’s more about “emotional maturity” than age. Just, wow. like, i’m a 21 year old lesbian and even i won’t have sex with teenagers because imo it’s predatory. they might be legal but they’re still very young women, and them crossin some imaginary number threshold don’t make it less wrong to be a full grown near middle-age adult male jackin off to high schoolers.

He’s got a “teacher/master” kink. Considering he’s into high school/college freshman-aged women, and has reblogged pictures of “teen lesbians” … yikes.

Thinks asexuals who at all want sex are not asexual. he clarifies that he “totally meant asexuals who feel sexual attraction arent ace” when called out. which, yknow, still aint quite right.

this isn’t even getting into the fact he’s known to ignore canon because he thinks he can write elves/elven culture better than bioware, like this is just from two searches on his blog - there could be way more.

 it should be noted that he identifies as bi/pan, but that doesn’t excuse his blatant homophobia, his weird fetishism of very young girls/his followers, or his attempts at making a nomadic culture intolerant and hateful because they aren’t ‘modern enough” to have values that are not traditionally Western ideals of heteronormativity/gender/etc.

all in all he’s got some major personal issues, on top of just being kind of a creepy guy, and i’d really advise against promoting him by using his work. parsing the wiki sucks, but i’d rather do that than let this guy’s stuff within a hundred feet of anything i write.

You literally have to understand that ur closest friends and loved ones may very well have kinks or fetishes that gross or freak you out and they simply won’t tell you because they know it grosses or freaks you out.
