Harry Potter and the Case of Scotland, An Essay

Or; Scotland is independant, Hogwarts is a completely fucked up and the witches are dying by the dozen. 2700+ words.

Anyone who knows an inkling of British politics or history understands the tension between Scotland and England, an underlying issue that dates back to at least the Roman Conquest. Scotland is more progressive than England, with a strong focus on transgender issues, much to JKs fury. More than that, every council in Scotland saw "remain" majorities with Brexit, as compared to England and Wales. An independent Scotland is not far from the realms of possibility, although in Harry Potter, it seems Scotland has always been independent.

It's odd to imagine this. From what we've come to understand of the Wizarding World, magical boundaries and borders follow muggle ones. We see references to individual countries, including Bulgaria, France, and of course Albania. Ireland also features prominently, although it's not clear how seperate the country is — the Troubles is certainly a prominent part of Harry Potter, inspiring Voldemort's actions and also characterising Seamus, the only prominent canonical Irish character as a pyromaniac. Yet, conversely the clues about Scotland and the truth are hard to find.

When looking at Fantastic Beasts — the fake, graffitied textbook, not the movie — I found something odd. Scotland seems to be a seperate entity from the rest of the Ministry of Magic, or at least what counts as a 'country' within the sense of the Wizarding World. It's not explicit by any means, rather it's more implicit, but it piqued my interest and inspired this essay.

The International Confederation of Wizards has had to fine certain nations repeatedly for contravening Clause 73. Tibet and Scotland are two of the most persistent offenders. (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, 2001. pg. xvii.)

I highlight here "nation" and "Scotland".

Note: I'm ignoring Tibet as the book is meta and supposedly written in the 1920s-30s by Newt Scamander. Tibet existed as a country during this time.

Scotland is not a nation. It has not really been a nation since 1603 when James the VI of Scotland became James the I of England, although this wasn't really premeditated. Also, the two crowns, although united in the Stuart family, weren't really the same country. At least not in the way we understand it today. It wasn't until 1707 when Scotland and England were legally unified beyond just sharing a king.

The Statue of Secrecy, however, was signed in 1689, during this odd time where Scotland was joined by crowns but not by law. I wonder then, how possible it would be for Scottish wizards to have expressed the same disdain for the English and refused to join with England.

As I will discuss later, it makes sense with Scotland's population and history. Additionally, we know that schools in the Wizarding World transcend our own borders — Beuaxbaton seems to take French, Swiss, Belgium students, and I imagine (based on the bad world building) would take most of Western Europe. Similarly, Durmstrung takes students from most of Eastern Europe. This does make sense in some ways — WWI and WWII dramatically altered the borders of Europe. Scotland could easily take students from the rest of Britain, even if it itself is not a nation within the UK and is its own seperate entity.

Further, time and time again, we see that the Ministry has little no influence over what actually occurs within Hogwarts, with the exception of Umbridge. There is no set curriculum by teachers — each teacher is very different and teaches what they want, which we see both with Hagrid and the multitude of DADA professors. This makes little sense; within a state school, or a school that has government involvement, you would expect some centralisation of what should be taught in schools. Even private schools have some sort of organisation along this basis, though I will be discussing more of this later.

Additionally, the Ministry have no role in appointing people for jobs or firing people within Hogwarts — Dumbledore is not removed from power until after he has broken a law against the ministry, which makes him appear to be the result of long-armed jurisdiction. Umbridge's power then, comes not just from the ministry, but from being an international agent, likely granted under something similar to an extradition treaty by the Scottish government.

Researching online showed nothing else, but I think from conjecture we can say that Scotland is independent, based too on its real life history (which is something I'll explore momentarily). This being the case, and its close proximity to England plus (largely) shared history, I imagine Scotland has a system similar to the rest of the UK, if more feudal.

It's likely Scotland's government is an oligarchy, run by barons and old families. There is only one name within the Sacred 28 which has Scottish origins, which could suggest the Macmillan's had a monopoly over this, but also could be simply Cantankerous Nott's bias or the Macmillians being the only 'pure' family from Scotland to marry into Sacred 28.

We do know that the Ross's (McGonagall's maternal family) were pureblood and McGonagall's mother eloped with a muggle. I think they would've been a fairly important family in Scotland's oligarchy as Ross is an area of Scotland. Following this logic, there should be other old families which take their name from the land (or vice verse) — Fife, Moray, Kinross, Selkirk, etc. — though none of these are characters last names canonically.

The Buchanan's are also a Pureblood family, and quite Purist. They're mentioned on Pottermore and one of the sons, Angus Buchanan was a squib who, after being kicked out, became a Scottish rugby player, inspired by the real Angus Buchanan and wrote a book about being a squib. Apparently he's the reason every wizard canonically supports the Scottish rugby team.

Finally, I'll suggest the Dale family as Pureblood and potentially part of this oligarchy. They're from Hogwarts Legacy and one of their members cursed the family tomb (located near Hogwarts) around 1300, but their family continues until the late 19th century at least. A family that has the money to build a tomb, the means to curse it and the ability/need to maintain their family name for so long is likely Pureblood.

There are other Scottish families, or ones that could be attributed to Scotland, but these had the strongest bases within known material and fell into at least three of the following categories.

Of course none of this is definite and delves into the realm of headcanons and OCs, but I'd recommend these as a starting point if someone were to ever write something based on this. I'd also recommend looking at Macbeth for character names.

The Tragedie of Macbeth was written in 1606 for King James I and VI of England and Scotland. It's one of Shakespeare's most famous plays (and my favourite), and is so ingrained within Western culture today — rules about not saying its name in the theatre, a self-fulfilled prophecy, double double toil and trouble, and of course the three witches — and these things all inspire the Wizarding World too, with the last three manifesting throughout the books and movies.

James was obsessed with witches — that's why Shakespeare wrote Macbeth for him (and also as a way to comment about the tyranny James was imposing on England; good stories are cultural critiques as well as being entertaining). In 1597, King James had written Daemonologie, a philosophical dissertation on witches, necromancy, black magic and demons. He advocated strongly for witch trials. Of course, Malleus Maleficarum, written in Germany, 1486, had also advocated for the same things.

Scotland is heavily associated with witchcraft — buidseachd in the original Scots Gaelic — for these things. It was also a place of comparatively high witch trials in comparison to England, with an estimated 4000-6000 people tried and more than 1500 executed (roughly 75% of them were women). These numbers were also 4 times the European average. While the more reported trials occurred during the period between the crowns inheritance and legal unification of Scotland and England, they were established widely before this too. Additionally, there was a entire entity of the Scottish Kirk which set up kirk sessions (elected officials of churches in charge of determining whether a person was guilty) as early as 1560 in some places, with legal introductions in 1597 — England did not have these sorts of things.

With the intense conditions of the period, it is likely wixen in Scotland were driven into hiding before their English counterparts, thus allowing for the distancing between the muggle and the wizarding world perhaps even before the two crowns united in 1603, as discussed in the previous section. This being the case, I would determine that Scotland, as a result of the rising tensions between the witchcraft and the muggle world enforced their own statue of secrecy and divided from the government between 1597 and 1603.

However, I think the majority of these issues stem too from the establishment of Hogwarts and the problems it faces in regards to world building. Canonically Hogwarts does exist with Scotland, which makes perfect sense when it comes to isolation, but the model is historically flawed in more ways than one.

According to Pottermore, Hogwarts was founded "at some point in the tenth century… concealed with numerous charms and spells to make it impossible for Muggles to trespass," the most notable being "any passing Muggle would only see ruins." Historically, this is impossible.

Castles as we understand them were only just beginning to make their appearances in mainland Europe in the late 10th century. Previously, they had been wooden structures, but even these 10th century stone structures are nowhere near the fairytale castles that pop-culture depicts. They were motte-and-bailey designs that were continued in some places until the 13th century, and were more concerned with fortification and intimidation than beauty. They looked a lot like this:

The motte was a huge pile of earth, incredibly steep and offered protection as guardhouses were built on top. The bailey was where people lived, worked and stored food. They were surrounded, often by high wooden posts and earthworks, whose ditches could sometimes act as moats when it flooded, although were just as difficult to invade when dry. They were easy to defend as they only had one entrance and most of the buildings inside would've been wooden, though stone buildings on the motte were not uncommon. There are many surviving examples and ruins around France and England. Herein lies several problems.

Firstly, these motte-and-bailey's originated in France during the early medieval period and were introduced to England following the Norman invasion in 1066. Any construction of these buildings in England would've been limited to the 11th and 12th centuries largely, as prior to the Norman invasion, the Anglo-Saxons followed more German and Norse traditions of large thatched halls.

You may have noted that I fail to mention Scotland in this discussion of early castles. This is because castles were nonexistent in Scotland until King David I brought them back from England and adopted them and feudalism in the 12th century. The earliest known castle in Scotland is Castle Sween built in 1100, about two centuries after Hogwarts was supposedly built. Only the ruins and earthworks remain, and it's believed the towers were later additions.

What might be noticeable is how little it looks like Hogwarts. Early medieval castles — in actuality most medieval castles — were stone walls which housed interior wooden buildings which have since been destroyed by any number of things. They were not the fairytale structures that come to mind in association with the word "castle". Those were a later constructions of the Georgian and Victorian periods from the 18th century onwards. Instead of being fortresses like medieval castles, they were homes of luxury.

Put simply, Hogwarts does not make historical sense in its construction or portrayal. Unless it was adapted and improved upon as time went on (which is unlikely and infeasible) Hogwarts should be nothing more than rotted huts. There's more to say on the poor grasp of history (I could go on about Merlin or the founders), but Hogwarts continues to bother me in the modern world too.

We return again to government and our question of whether Hogwarts is a government school or a private one. Although the wizarding world is deeply capitalist, with the common assumption being that students pay a yearly fee to attend within fics, I doubt this. There is never any mention of this within the books, and logistically it doesn't make sense. How do muggleborns pay? How do wizarding families like the Weasley's pay? If there had been some kind of transaction, we would've seen it in the books given they're told from Harry's experience. Alternatively, acting on the assumption that Scotland is it's own nation within the wizarding world brings up similar issues regarding the standardisation of schooling as I discussed earlier — there is little to none. For these reasons, I don't think Hogwarts is a government school either.

Returning once more to history, I think Hogwarts takes its education system from the charity schools which populated the UK for a large portion of its history until national-run schools opened in the 19th century. Their goal was to provide some education to the small towns where they were established but there was no standardisation of them across the UK. With the historical context in regards to the split from the muggle world in the 16th/17th century and the stagnation of wizarding government since then, it makes perfect sense for Hogwarts to act as a charity school, especially as according to Pottermore it was originally constructed to hide wizards who were "being persecuted by muggles."

This also makes sense if we take into account O.W.Ls and N.E.W.Ts, which act as standardised tests for an unstandardised system. I think these were developed sometime in the 20th century to act as a qualification, particularly as the muggle world was becoming more bureaucratic and the wizarding one was failing to match up. It's likely it was an effort by the ICW rather than an individual nation, although other countries call them different things.

O.W.Ls and N.E.W.Ts in themselves suggest other schools similar to Hogwarts or homeschooling. This isn't completely out of line with what appears in canon either. Although the Gaunts are largely squibs by the mid-20th century, they still do possess some magic. For all his faults Marvolo would have taught both Merope and Morfin. Using this, we can ascertain that school-aged students are not required to go to Hogwarts. We can also deduce this from the fact that the trace is added onto wands after the first year at Hogwarts, as Hermione mentions all the spells have worked for her when trying them at home before Hogwarts. As such, it's a safety measure implemented by Hogwarts, fulfilling its original purpose as a place of protection, acting as a charity school for those who have no other options or for those who simply want to attend.

Hogwarts as a charity school acts simply. It is funded by a board, ideally a board that is not elected but instead based off inheritance and nepotism, with families like the Malfoys having funded it for generations (which would explain Lucius' attendance of school quidditch games). While examiners do enter Hogwarts for O.W.Ls and N.E.W.Ts, this is only done as it's the biggest school in the region. Students at Hogwarts, at other wizarding schools, or through home-schooling and their parents education can also complete self-study (including of subjects not offered at Hogwarts) and complete their O.W.Ls or N.E.W.Ts at any ICW approved governing body, which includes Scotland's ministry, however that might manifest.

I don't think I can offer any conclusion to this, and for now my ideas are exhausted. I think I'm more poking at holes with a stick and making them bigger, but I wanted some way to record everything and work through issues and interesting things. Much of this developed and grew as I was writing — this began as only a discussion of whether Scotland was a nation within HP. If I've forgotten anything or piqued any interests my asks are open.

At first you were really shy and reserved

Niffler’s New Discovery

Requested by anon: May I request a the youngest Shelby sister x Newt Scamander story? The Shelby sister is nothing like her siblings. She’s shy, reads books like they’re oxygen, loves animals, and doesn’t drink, smoke, or anything like that. She doesn’t even swear, she’s so pure. She also loves his animals. And Tommy acts like her father but she loves her brother very much. Same as her other brothers. They find out she’s dating him and get all overprotective. Sorry if this is too specific. I just love the idea of a Shelby sister who’s nothing like her siblings. Because most of the Shelby reader fics always have them smoking and all that. Which they are fun to read, but it’s nice to see something different. Feel free to pick the Scenario. :)

At first, they had no problem keeping their relationship hidden from her overly protective family, but the troublemaker Newt constantly had to chase down and return to his case was the thing that exposed them. The bloody Niffler just loved things that shined. Who could blame it though? It was it’s nature.

Just as it was the Shelby brothers nature to react the way they did. Violent, perhaps, but of their nature. Their possessive, over the top protective, shitty, big brother, nature.

And it all started, one late afternoon...

The older Shelby trio, not counting Ada with her age advance over John, returned home after a nice night out at the pub. Sure, the sun hadn’t set yet, but Pol wanted them to return home a little earlier today for a family meeting. The meeting included everyone, minus the innocent angel whom the Shelbys called their sister.

It was the perfect time to have Newt over. The perfect time to explore the secret world hidden inside his little brief case. If only they knew the pesky Niffler had been waiting.

“Are you sure they won’t suspect anything of my presence?” Newt hesitated, one foot hovering above the wooden flooring of Y/n’s bedroom, the other resting on the rooftop outside her window.

She ushered him in the rest of the way, making sure to lock her door after checking that no one was around. “Positive. Family meetings take a while, so we’re good on time. How about you? Are you sure this is good with the council?”

He had a guilt-ridden look across his face as he looked around. “There are some things the council doesn’t have to know.” A nervous laugh rumbled in his throat before he cleared it and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

“Uh huh... Well, just promise me that you won’t get into any serious trouble for this, alright Newton?” The blushing hufflepuff gave his lover a quick nod, as well as a smile in return for the little peck she placed upon his cheek, pinkening his skin further down his neck- it was no surprise that Newt was terribly new to receiving affection from anything other than his beasts that resided in his case.

“S-shall we be going?” He broke the tension, gesturing to the case in front of them.

“Boys.” Polly stopped the bickering that had started up between John and Tommy, her eyes drifting toward the ceiling, the trios’ following. “Your sister’s been awfully quiet.”

John cackled, “Oh no, maybe she snuck out, went to have a quick fuck with some guy off the streets, didn’t she Pol?” His rather sarcastic tone suggested his knowledge that the referenced behavior was most certainly unlike his little sister, but the immaturity of John Shelby simply couldn’t resist making a joke.

Polly, however, was in no mood for John’s incessant kidding. Her hand met the back of his head, a disapproving furrow of her brows telling him to stop talking. “I’m being serious, you idiot. It’s more quiet than usual.”

“And what about it, Pol?” Tommy spoke after taking a drag from his cigarette, an eyebrow quirked.

“If she really does have a boy up there, he better pray he’s out the window by the time we get up there.”

Tommy’s brow, lowered after asking Polly how she’d respond, lifted back once again. “There’s no God for him to pray to, Arthur. The boy is fucked, plain and simple.”

“In more ways than one.”

John’s childish cackles were hushed into silence, a slap sounding throughout the room prior to their ceasing. A hand rubbing the back of his head, John glared at his aunt, yet continued the discussion of what to do with Y/n nonetheless.

The past ten minutes had been spent trying to block off any and all exists for the pesky little Niffler. Each time it attempted to escape the bedroom, Y/n or Newt were quick to block it off. It amazed Y/n how many places the little creature could scurry off through. Unfortunately, with their wild-goose-chase, footsteps turned to stomps...well, really running, but downstairs it was more likely to sound aggressive, such as the hard thud of a Blinder’s boot on the floor of the Garrison.

It was inevitable; the possibility of being caught, but the fact seemed to slip their minds as they both tried to corner the Niffler, as well as capture it once more. Every shiny thing, ranging from jewelry to bullet casings, or things that caught her eye, made into décor (gifted from her brothers, as she would never touch a gun unless need be) were being stolen as the creature evaded capture.

Newt shot Y/n a sorry look each time one of her belongings were snatched up by the Niffler. It touched her heart, truly, it did, but now was not the time to swoon. Y/n froze as the Niffler wandered over to a bottle. Wine? Champagne? She didn’t know; Y/n never drank- the bottle was a gift from her sister in law, which she couldn’t turn down without upsetting her, so it soon became another...decoration.

Atop the bottle was shimmery, gold-like, wrapping. Of course it caught the mischievous little shine-thief’s eye. It pulled and pulled, Y/n and Newt made eye contact as the uneasy feeling in their guts mirrored, until POP!

The door broke open with a loud bang, Arthur standing confused before getting both a Niffler and a cork to the space between his brows. While Y/n flinched, Newt only looked away in shame.

“What. The. Literal. Fuck. Was. That?” John gapped. His usual remark would be to poke fun, but he too was in great shock, he couldn’t even think of anything humorous.

“A- ...A Niffler.” Newt stuttered. His rather shy demeanor was rarely common around Y/n, so she new he was slightly uncomfortable the second his hand lifted to itch the back of his neck as his eyes found interest in the floorboards.

“Did I fuckin’ ask you?” John narrowed his eyes at the timid wizard.

It was unusual for Y/n to get angry, but the unjustness of John’s attitude toward her lover didn’t sit well with her. “Leave him alone!”

Now there was more to be shocked about. “I- what?”

“You heard me, John. You, Arthur, and Thomas. Leave Newt alone. He didn’t mean for this to happen, so he shouldn’t be harassed by you three. Want to question him? Have Pol do it, but the second you come to my room and bully my lover is the second you cross the line.”

Tommy, amused, let out a little chuckle as he raised his eyebrows.

“Something funny to you, Thomas? ‘Cause I don’t think any of us are laughing.”

 “No, sister, nothing is of humor to me.” He muttered despite dawning a lopsided smirk. Tommy looked at his brothers and nodded his head toward the stairs before walking away. Although he was leaving, he never said he wouldn’t poke at the boy some more. Now just wasn’t worth it; he was already shaking in his boots as it is.

“Tommy- where- where’re you goin’?” John did a double take, following shortly after.

Arthur rubbed the red spot where he’d been nailed by the creature and it��s new favorite possession, proved by it cuddling the cork close to it’s body on the floor where it had landed after hitting Arthur. He excused himself politely before walking in the same direction as his brothers, still rubbing at his soon-to-be-bruising injury all the way down.

Newt took the opportunity to grab the niffler and tickle Y/n’s possessions from his tummy before running over and tucking him in the case. The anger faded from Y/n’s eyes as she watched her lover. “It looks as though the Niffler has discovered something new.” Newt chuckled lightly, easing up slowly.

“New indeed.”

Magical Arts: April's Writing Challenge Winner!

For April, the task involves writing a new chapter for the 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' book. The chapter, however, needs to include either a new mythological creature that you have created yourself or an existing mythological creature that doesn't appear in Newt Scamander's beloved book.

1st Place: Athenniene Cromwell

Nuno sa Punso

Nuno sa Punso (Nuno for short) is a Dark creature that lives in the Philippines. The name translates to 'old man in a mound', as they are usually depicted or described as small, old men that are no taller than two feet and make home of mounds of dirt or even old trees. Local Magizoologists believe that they are distant relatives of goblins, along with the Duwende who are the kinder versions of this creature. Duwendes are usually helpful to the family or community where its home (usually an old tree) stands and would often play with the children, whereas a Nuno is a vengeful creature that will not tolerate being disturbed in any way.

These creatures are considered highly dangerous. Locals discourage anyone from going anywhere near them or their homes. The Philippine's Department of Magical Affairs classifies these creatures into 'Class 3: Highly Dangerous and/or Dark Creatures', which is akin to the British Ministry of Magic Classification XXXX.

What do you do if you find a Nuno's home in your area? It's difficult to say whether a mound or old tree is home to a Nuno or duwende especially since these creatures are invicible to most. The safest thing to do is to assume that it is and therefore not disturb it. In the unavoidable situation where you have to go near one though, saying "tabi tabi po" is an effective way of giving notice to the creatures that you are nearing its home and do not intend to hurt or anger them.

What happens when you disturb a Nuno's home? It doesn't matter if it was accidental or intentional. Nunos are vengeful creatures who will retaliate with curses. Victims of their Dark magic often find themselves displaying symptoms like fever, chills, rashes, or hallucinations. Despite the familiar symptoms, modern medicine has a difficult time diagnosing the illness, and the locals would turn to specialized healers who perform a ritual with fire and water to determine whether someone has been cursed by a Nuno or not.

How to appease and/or care for a Nuno sa Punso? Those who find themselves cursed by a Nuno must place offerings to the home of the creature and apologize for the trespassing or disturbance they have caused. In most cases, Nunos accept these offerings and symptoms resolve within a day or two. Nunos are also sentient beings and would prefer to be left alone, and so the best way to care for them is to leave them be.

First Sighting There are no official documents of where and when the very first particular sighting of a Nuno sa Punso was. The earliest records date back to precolonial times. However, most locals still believe of their existence, and I have found a family who had an experience with these creatures.

We live in the province, and our area used to be more remote ten years ago. Our families have resided here for generations, and on one of our ancestral houses, there are two trees: a star apple and a guava. Both have their own 'tenants'. We usually call them duwende, but these creatures and the Nunos are interchangeable sometimes and are usually only separated by the fact that if one lives in a mound, then it's a Nuno. My grandfather once saw the duwende that lives in the guava tree. He described it as an old man, like a hermit, dressed in white and with a long beard. Of course, we couldn't see them. It's usually the older adults who could. The family believes that this duwende is the guardian of the tree, which is why the guavas grow all year and they taste different from other guavas. My cousin had an incident years ago when she unknowingly kicked a huge rock by the tree. The next day, she had rashes all over her body, and no matter how many doctors or dermatologists we've visited, they couldn't explain what it was or give a cure. We approached a local Healer and determined that she offended the duwende by kicking the rock and accidentally hitting the creature. My aunt and cousin gave an offering of food with a candle and apologized by the tree quickly. Three days later, my cousin was back to normal. Now, the creature in the star apple tree is slightly different. Those who have seen it says it's darker than the one on the guava tree, and so we usually steer clear of that area more. Years ago, I was playing badminton with my cousins when the shuttlecock accidentally got caught on one of the lower branches. I claimed it back by hitting the leaves with my racket. However, a few days later, I find myself with high fever, chills, and hallucinations that a huge wave is crashing down on me every time a door opens. My family soon realized that I had accidentally disturbed the creature in the star apple tree, and we quickly made offerings and apologized. I recovered a few days later. My family still believes that there are dwellers in both trees. Like my grandparents taught us, we still say 'tabi tabi po' to notify them that we're about to do something in the area. No one's been cursed in the family for a while now, but we know they're still there because our dog randomly barks at the tree for no reason sometimes. We think they can see them, and that it's possible we just learned to live together in the past years.

Summary: You loved Leta Lestrange, and she loved you. Its a shame you couldn't tell her that.

Notes: This is my first fanfic im writing. I will take tips on how to improve my writing, just don't be mean pls :)

Things were so much more simpler when you were all at Hogwarts. A war was the farthest thing in your mind then.

But now, things have changed. You were not the young girl who jumped up and down when you got your letter, or the girl who wanted to become a quidditch seeker. No, You were a lady, on her way to fight in a war. A war against Grindelwald.

You knew the risks of fighting this war, but it was a risk you were willing to take if it meant protecting her

Leta Lestrange, a broken yet beautiful soul, the girl she fell in love with.

Y/n never wanted to fall in love with another girl. She had tried multiple times to get rid of those feelings, she would flirt with other men, go out on dates, and even ended up in bed with them, but those feelings still stayed.

She knew that she had fallen too deep, and just came in terms with those feelings. Many nights were spent with her lying awake wondering what it would feel like to hold her hands or kiss her, but she knew that those feelings would never come.

Leta Lestrange was engaged to someone else, Theseus Scamander. Y/n didn't hate him, he was a kind man, he treated others well, including her, but she couldn't help the jealousy burning in her chest every time she saw them together.

That led to her avoiding Leta, it hurt her too see Leta looking at her with pure sadness, but she couldn't handle the pain.

But now, none of that mattered, Grindelwald was here, and he was stronger than ever.

They were all standing there, around a circle of fire. The blue flames surrounding them, hissing at them. Grindelwald was standing there in the middle of it all, and he began to collect his army from there.

Queenie Goldstien and Credence joined, leaving a heartbroken Nagini and Jacob behind. Now, it was only a matter of time before Leta joined.

Grindelwald had his hand out for Leta, "come home". Leta took his hand, and Y/n felt her stomach drop, but than she left his hand.

Leta was now facing her, Theseus, and Newt, "I love you." She took her wand out and casted a spell on him, Y/n couldn't quiet hear what spell it was but she just knew, this was not going to stop him.

Grindelwald had defeated her, the flames had surrounded her, her body was disintegrating, her brown eyes looked at the three of you, "Get out!".

Y/n felt her world fall apart, she was gone.

Y/n couldn't remember what happened after her death, but she was sitting there sobbing. She never got to hold her, kiss her, hug her, or anything she had always wanted to do. She couldn't even tell her, how she was her everything.

They were just unsaid words.

BEING AN AUTHOR WHO’S DATING NEWT: 

Being classmates with Newt back in Hogwarts

You always had a soft spot for him, but neither of you really talked about your feelings for one another or dated

After the two of you graduated, you went on to become a writer

You wrote a lot of books for your fellow wizards and witches, even writing a fantasy book and publishing it in the Muggle world 

Newt would see your books in bookstores, and he always found himself smiling when he saw your name

He’d read all your books, pouring off your words and being endlessly impressed by your talents

The two of you unfortunately didn’t keep in touch after graduating, but Newt decided to reach out

You were ecstatic when you got his first letter, and you exchanged letters for a few months

Both of you always being excited to read each other’s letters, and you found yourself falling for Newt and missing him

Eventually, the two of you realised you’d be in New York at the same time, and arranged to meet

Catching up on your lives, even though you’ve already discussed about it a lot in your letters

Getting dinner with one another, but not really labelling it a date until you end up confessing your feelings for Newt at the end of the night

And, much to your joy, he confesses the same feelings for you

Being so excited for Newt when he tells you about his plans for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Him shyly showing you the manuscript, and you could read the pages over and over again for decades

You just think it’s so impressive for Newt to put together such a wonderful, educational book

“This will sell out everywhere, Newt, I already know it.” “That means a lot, coming from you.”

Him teaching you about every creature he has and encounters, and you love listening to him talk

You think he looks so adorable when he’s passionate, but also, he can tell that you’re genuinely interested in learning

You love leaving little notes or poems for Newt around the apartment, and he collects and keeps them all

Getting to meet and become friends with the Goldstein sisters and Jacob when Newt encounters them

Being surprised when Tina and Queenie know you and your work

“Oh, I know you! I think I’ve read one of your books, honey!” “I wasn’t aware I had an international audience!” 

You like being able to just talk to Newt about writing because even though you write about very different subjects, he just understands the struggles and the tumultuous journey of writing

Trying to help each other with writer’s block whenever you encounter it

Bouncing ideas off one another for new projects and books that you have in mind 

Newt will forever be fascinated with how creative you can be, and how your mind can come up with all sorts of wonderful ideas

Even if you doubt yourself or think something is silly, Newt reassures you that all ideas have to start somewhere, and he always helps you develop it

Being able to be honest with each other when edited or proofreading each other’s work

“I think you might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me and my writing.” “I will take that as the highest form of compliment.”
