A clear horizon. An orange sunset fading into vivid pinks and purples as the atmosphere darkens in preparation for the night. Evening sun warming your face, the space around you drifting into silence as calm settles into your bones, time halting its ever constant forward march, no thoughts or worries.
That’s what it felt like, the moment my eyes met Jasper Hale’s. Like I was done searching for what my heart was in need of as soon as I glanced into those golden pools of his.
• January 24th, 2005 • Forks High School •
Reader
Based on the non-stop gossip floating around this microscopic high school, I’m the newest kid on the block. Dethroning the most recent to wear the title, Bella Swan, the Police Chief’s daughter.
Now, I’m not opposed to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, but Forks could strive to be a little more than a one-stoplight town and add a few more amenities. This big city Texas girl needs a little more than Forks Outfitters - the one stop shop for food, basic clothing, and hardware.
I left Dallas because my mom needed me here, my dad didn’t want to trade sunshine and big ranches for rain and freezing temperatures. They’re happily divorced, but I can tell that over time it’s worn her down. I’m just a junior in high school, but I guess she and I can navigate this together.
God, let there be cute boys at this high school, I’m begging you.
I was almost immediately accosted by what I deemed the welcoming committee the moment I locked the door to my car and began the dreaded ‘new kid’ trek to the front office of Forks High School. Stares came from anyone loitering in the parking lot before class while this overly-excited kid, who introduced himself as Eric Yorkie, began what had to be a well rehearsed ‘anything you need’ spiel.
All hopes of flying under the radar halfway through junior year vanished into thin air and I hadn’t even made it to the sidewalk yet.
“Eric? I really appreciate your help and concern, but I was hoping to kinda just glide in on my first day and blend in.” I said as we walked together through the wet parking lot, dodging the bigger puddles so I wouldn't soak my shoes before I got to my first class of the day.
“Oh that’s pretty much impossible here, newcomers are always the only thing everyone talks about. Don’t be scared to hit me up with questions later though, good luck!” Shouting that last part as he dashed off to class, turning the heads of a few close students.
A deep sigh passed my lips as I trudged on, pulling open the heavy door to the administration office. It’s nice to have someone offer help on my first day, I just wish this town was big enough so that I could get lost on everyone’s list of priorities to gossip about or stare at.
Today is going to be a long day.
“Good morning dear!” A sweet older woman announced from behind the central desk in the front office. The name plate in front of her reading ‘Administrative Secretary Shelly Cope’.
“Good morning Miss Cope. I’m Y/n Y/l/n, here to pick up my class schedule and hopefully a map of the place?” I said, cutting to the chase. The front office is a giant fish bowl to the students walking by outside, no one wants to spend more time than necessary here on their first day.
“Oh yes! I’ve got it all printed out and ready to go for ya dear, along with your locker assignment.” She says with a smile, passing the papers across her desk. “Let me know if you have any questions or if you need help with anything!”
“Yes ma’am, thank you!” I responded, half reading my new schedule - half aware of where I was going as I press a shoulder to the exit.

The front office door smacks straight into an unsuspecting, gorgeous, golden-eyed fellow student, sending the papers clutched in my hands to the ground.

Chapter 2: Learning
The book slammed on the desk, “Miss Kane! If you are not going to pay attention in this class then why are you here?!”
Embarrassment filled her chest as everyone giggled. It always felt like this. Either she wouldn’t pay attention in class and get in trouble or she would find a way to pay attention that was somehow wrong and still get in trouble. There seemed to be no middle ground.
Martha hunched her shoulders up by her ears, then she immediately straightened her posture again. She didn’t actually want to be here. She wanted to run outside. In the sunlight. Free of all her troubles. But that wasn’t in the cards for a ‘proper lady of her status.’
Especially since she had turned thirteen. It seemed that was the switch for her parents. The girl is thirteen: send her to finishing school to have the ways of a dull, mild mannered lady drilled into her.
The tight energy coiled in her veins saying move move move, yet once again she was forced to ignore it.
Another dull day of learning.
____________________
It had been one month of receiving Martha’s memories in his dreams. Which would be fine! If he also didn’t receive her restlessness.
Every time she had the urge to fidget, so did he. He constantly tapped his fingers, shook his legs, and shuffled his feet. What made it worse was that he heard Martha’s teachers yell every time he slouched, put his elbows on the table, and even criticizing how much he ate. Which was a real bummer.
Every once in a while, when the voices of probably long dead teachers got too loud, his body would react by making him invisible or intangible. Right now was an inconvenient time, as he went to take a bite of his cereal and the spoon fell through his hand.
“-and it’s done.” Mom cheered.
With that Dad boomed about the new Fenton Finder. Which, of course, locked onto him as being a ghost.
Thankfully, or not, Jazz went on a rant about how their parents slacked off in their role as guardians to their children while ushering Danny out the door to her car.
____________________
School made it even harder to hide his condition. From all the people, to all the noise, to the smell of the chemicals used to clean the building. Everything made him want to hide, which made his new powers react to help him hide.
His friends tried to help (pulling him from the floor, reassuring him that just because he was different now, didn’t mean he was a freak). But part of the problem was he hadn’t told them the whole truth. That he wasn’t only Danny anymore. They didn’t know about Martha.
“–recyclo-vegetarian!” Sam boasted.
“Which means… what?” Tucker asked.
“She doesn’t eat anything with a face on it,” Danny explained.
Which led to Tucker bragging about his ability to determine what Danny had had for dinner the night before.
“Impressive,” he replied.
Tucker’s pride in his diet was quickly replaced by fear at the next sentence out of Sam’s mouth: “The school board finally agreed to a new cafeteria menu.”
____________________
Lunchtime had descended into chaos. Between the change in menu, the flaming ovens, and the new lunch lady ghost summoning a suit quite literally made of meat, Danny was ready for the day to end. And of course as soon as he was confident in his abilities and wanting to be seen, he lost hold of his shift and was back to being regular old Danny.
Sam was grabbed by the meat monster. He and Tucker were dragged by Lancer to his office before Danny could transform and follow her.
Sitting there, listening to Lancer list out their faults seen by the school before yelling at them for ‘conspiring to destroy the school cafeteria.’ When Danny tried to explain that, while he may have been (definitely was) the one to start the food fight, Dash was the one bullying him, Lancer cut him off. Listing Dash’s football skills as if they were relevant to the conversation.
As soon as Lancer and Dash left the room, they made their escape through the floor tracking the trail of meat to the basement.
Where Sam was buried in a pile of meat.
With the lunch lady ghost trying to force her to eat meat.
Great.
____________________
“What is a woman’s greatest tool?” The instructor asked.
Martha knew the answer, but she also knew that she wasn’t actually expecting a response from her pupils.
“A woman’s greatest tool is her mind. Her wit,” she continued, “her ability to come up with an idea and make those in her life believe they were the ones to come up with it.
“If a woman can convince those around her to compromise the ideas they have with the one she has, then she will succeed in life.”
____________________
When Danny woke up, in his own room nevertheless, it would not be an exaggeration to say he was disoriented.
“Wh–what’s going on?!!”
After freaking out about the thought of maybe being out for days Tucker and Sam started another argument. Both left determined that their choice of food would be the one to stay in the cafeteria. Hopefully everything will be back to normal tomorrow.
____________________
He really shouldn’t have said that out loud yesterday, he most definitely jinxed himself.
The entire school was divided. Half were dressed in what seemed to be meat costumes, and the other half dressed like hippies. And of course Sam and Tucker were at the lead of their respective sides.
When they both walked up to him he asked, “You guys put together two protests in one night?”
He was more impressed than anything really.
And there was the arguing again. He tensed as they yelled at him to choose a side.
Thankfully, and wow wasn’t that jarring, the lunch lady ghost appeared in a giant swarm of meat condensing into an enormous meat suit.
Oh boy.
The resulting ghost fight led to him crashing into the ground making a giant crater. He lifted himself on shaking arms.
“Oh dear,” the ghost said sweetly, “what a mess. Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” he replied, “I think so.”
An idea sparked in his head but before he could enact it the ghost was yelling again and controlling five miniature meat monsters.
“Can we talk about this?!” He yelled while being flown away by the meat monsters.
Something metal slammed into his face. The Fenton Thermos! Wasn’t it supposed to trap ghosts?
He was suddenly released from high in the sky, somehow managing to transform midair. He flew back to the ghost, begging to whatever was out there that his plan would work, and if not his plan then the thermos.
“Can we please talk?!”
“SOUP’S NOT ON THE MENU!!”
“I WANT TO TALK!!”
She looked stunned, like she couldn’t believe him.
“I just want to talk,” he said before she could say anything, “I’ll bring my friends, Sam and Tucker, we can all talk and find some way to make the menu work for all of us. Can’t we?”
She judged him, “I will return tomorrow. Your little friends better be ready to talk. And… perhaps compromise can be made.”
Relief filled him and he turned to fly away when she said, “Y’know dearie, death leaves her mark on everyone. Can you tell me why you seem to have two marks from death?”
He froze, shoulders tense. He heard his parents booming. “I can explain, and I’m sorry about this. I’ll explain it later too.” And he sucked her into the thermos and hid it behind his back.
“–you would have to be a moron not to see the ghost directly in front of you.”
His parents quirked their eyes at him but after a rambled excuse of the ghost running away they ran in the direction he pointed. And Jazz stomped off looking frazzled and upset.
And somehow he, Sam and Tucker were the ones forced to clean up the entire school.
____________________
“No way! No way are we talking to the crazy ghost lady!”
“Sam I said you would, besides, this is the first ghost we’ve met that can talk! Maybe even give me some pointers in the being a ghost department,” he begged, his hands clasped as if in prayer, “please at least give it a try.”
He saw the moment she relented, huffing a heavy sigh, “Fine. But she better not bury me in a meat pile again.”
He released the breath he was holding as he opened the portal. He had released and explained why he had captured the ghost (her name really was Lunch Lady( she had explained that she hadn’t actually died, but was instead the physical embodiment of all lunch ladies)) yesterday.
And now they were discussing the pros and cons of a diet with meat and a diet without. It didn’t seem to be going anywhere.
“CHILDREN NEED THE PROTEIN MEAT PROVIDES!”
“DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW BAD ANIMALS ARE TREATED IN THE ANIMAL HUSBANDRY INDUSTRY?!”
“YOU LISTEN TO ME LI–”
“Wait! Sam, that,” Danny exclaimed, “that!”
“‘That’ what Danny?”
“That’s what’s behind your protest against meat! Animal cruelty!”
They all looked at him open mouthed.
“What’s animal husbandry?” Tucker asked.
“Animal farming,” Sam replied, crossing her arms. “Most of the animals that end up in your gullet were raised in poor conditions with their only purpose in life being slaughtered .”
Tucker’s brows furrowed and Lunch Lady squinted her eyes.
“So it’s less that you have a problem with someone eating meat, and more the process of how that meat is acquired?” Tucker asked, “Then why in the world did you start with the school cafeteria menu! Honestly, schools don’t like to change. It was always bound to backfire.”
Sam opened her mouth to retaliate, but seemed to find no words.
Lunch Lady placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, “It seems you’ve got a big heart dearie, and I suppose this misunderstanding can be forgiven this once,” she smiled, then went serious, “But don’t mess with the school menu again.”
Back to smiling, “Now you two run home, the ghost child and I have much to discuss before I leave.”
Ah, right. She wanted to know why death had marked him twice. Unfortunately he knew exactly what she meant.
____________________
Danny collapsed on his bed, exhausted from the events of the past three days.
I’m not ready to go into detail he had told Lunch Lady but this is my second life.
That was… the first person he had told. Telling her had felt like a small amount of the weight on him had lifted.
Lunch Lady had left smiling, and with a promise to bring him food. You’re so skinny! Plus, even as a half ghost you’re going to need ectoplasmic meals.
He fell asleep smiling, something deep within him extremely satisfied.

So different this world is already. Such a small change, but such a giant ripple it’s making. This is going to be interesting.

From what we see of it in game, would Absol be a feliform carnivore or a caniform carnivore? Or would it be omnivorous? Because I've been writing my Absol OC, Juniper, as being very similar to canids but other places seem to place them as feliforms?
You gave me quite the first question! Absol is a guy who's inspirational origins aren't as obvious as some other quadrupedal mammalian pokemon. More info under the cut so I don't clutter anyone's dash :)
Content Warning: Real life animal bones. Discussion of anatomy in depth. Beware.
LET'S TALK ABOUT ABSOL, HELL YEAH. FULL NERD RAMBLE TIME.
So, this is a bit of a complicated question to sort out. Is Absol a feliform or a caniform? The answer is... Well, neither? Maybe both?
Ultimately pokemon may be inspired by real life animals, but they have an entirely different biological evolutionary tree than ours do- meaning our assumptions about their wild behavior and skeletal systems are all just that: assumptions.
That said we can make observations based off of their anatomy. However, due to these being Pokemon, their skeletons are not available to inspect, neither are their muscles or organs, but I can give it a shot just from eyeballin' em.
So, what's the difference between a Feliform and a Caniform? Well....the answer to that is in the skull, specifically in the anatomy of the bones of the inner ear. On Absol we don't have that information. But there is general traits that can be assigned to both suborders of animals. Let's list a few so we can get it out of the way.
Please remember these are generalizations, so there are some exceptions to these!
(Images credit to Wikimedia Commons)
Caniforms: longer snouts, more teeth, less specialized teeth, non-retractable claws, usually plantigrade, almost always terrestrial. Feliforms: shorter snouts, less teeth, highly specialized teeth, retractable claws, many are arboreal/semi-arboreal, and they're usually digitigrade.
Soo.... What about about Absol?
Well, oh balls, that's a mixed bag.... No problem! Let's use the anatomy to come to our own conclusions. Well its weight of 103 Lbs (47kg) and its height of 3'11" (1.3m) at the tip of its scythe tells us that it is a "medium" sized animal. Very scientific, I know. Medium.
So a medium sized quadrupedal animal that thrives in temperate and cold climates with thick fur and a prominent mane. Parts of its body, specifically the tail and the snout/face, are completely hairless. It has thick, long claws that are unable to be retracted or hidden. It has a large "scythe" which it can use for both offensively and defensively, as it can be used to defend the vulnerable back of the neck area where otherwise the animal would not be able to reach. Its mouth is small, and it has relatively small teeth. This animal is also lithe and slim and has slender legs that would allow it to run well.
How can this be interpreted? Well, let's try this: Due to its size and having developed a defensive horn, it is likely not at the top of the food chain- most big predators don't exactly develop over-the-top extra weapons for fun.
Second thing, what about its diet? Well, I would suggest it's definitely a carnivore. I mean, all animals are omnivores technically, but I would fit Absol into the hypercarnivore tier, with over 95% of its diet being made up of meat. With the size of its claws, it's likely its adept at digging, so it may sample on roots and tubers in a pinch. As for its behavior, due to its size and fur patterns, as for its process of finding food, I'd suggest an opportunist hunter/scavenger.
It can hunt, but generally will avoid doing so if possible. It's much more to try and sniff out an already deceased meal than grapple down one yourself. When it does hunt, it would go for smaller prey animals, rodent-like pokemon, small bird pokemon, and other small mammals. If it happens upon a larger carcass, due to its small mouth it will more than likely use its claws to shred the meat into smaller more manageable bites it can tear off. In personality, I suspect Absol leans heavily into the feliform stereotype; it is solitary and generally quite unfriendly and skittish by nature. Due to its size, it is instinctually hyper-aware of being preyed upon by larger animals, and that includes humans. As for the sounds it makes, it probably sounds a bit like a bobcat or cougar. Growls, hisses, and more horrifically, almost human-like screeching when cornered/threatened. Bobcat noises linky.
So..... there's no actually SIMPLE answer to "is it a feliform or a caniform?" oops. But I at least hope this helps ;;

10 Tips for Coping w/ PMDD
But first, what is PMDD?
~ Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that includes physical & behavioral symptoms that typically resolve with the onset of menstruation.
1. Dealing with depression - focus on distraction, clean your space, watch a movie, try to stay out of your own head for the time being.
2. Dealing with anxiety - do whatever you need to do to feel safe, just be sure to communicate with those around you, for example sometimes I lock myself in my closet for a bit. Doesn't have to be that extreme, do what works for you.
3. Dealing with insomnia - work out just before resting, turn off all devices at minimum an hour before you go to bed, try drinking tea, and avoid caffeine. also know that laying awake in bed is better than staying up active, it's better to get some sort of rest than none at all even if you're not asleep.
4. Dealing with irritability - journal to find the root of what's frustrating you, or if it's too upsetting, focus on distraction again. Get out of your environment for a few minutes, give yourself space to breath and time to react while heightened.
5. Dealing with brain fog - drink lots of water and get lots of fresh air, and write notes to help aid your memory. Make limited plans, or plans for the future, while dealing with episodes and remind yourself that it's okay to take breaks and come back.
6. Dealing with pain - warm baths, and practicing low impact movement like yoga, walking, dancing, or swimming can help. Also experiment with what sort of diet helps minimize bloating for you (avoiding inflammatory foods and finding nutrient dense foods you enjoy is a good place to start). I highly recommend turmeric tea for lessening bloating and increasing joy, here's my recipe -
Turmeric Tea
+ 2-3 tsp turmeric powder
+ a dash of black pepper
+ 1 tbsp lemon juice
+ agave to taste
+ 1 cup of green tea
+ separate cup of ice
= add ingredients to the cup of ice in the order listed above, stir, and enjoy!
7. Dealing with distorted self image - challenge cognitive dissonance within yourself, point out inconsistencies and remind yourself of your worth. I promise you, you are valuable and worth it.
8. Dealing with impulsivity - move through the impulse rather than act on it, sit with the discomfort of holding back and focus on something else, do not allow your mind to spiral closer towards the impulsive decision, allow yourself to find comfort in the resistance.
9. Dealing with suicidal ideation - focus on sensory awareness and distraction, as well as the gray areas of life rather than the extremes you may feel are weighing you down. Hold an ice cube until it melts, lay on the ground and stare at the universe staring back at you. Know that there's still time.
10. Affirmations for people with PMDD -
♡ I am safe, secure, and protected
♡ I am not alone in my struggles
♡ I am in control of my thoughts
♡ I will ask for help when I need it
♡ I have already survived my worst days
♡ I can embrace life's uncertainty
♡ My emotions don't define me
♡ My pain doesn't define me
♡ My struggles do not define me
♡ I know this pain will subside
" For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. "

HI NOPAL IT'S MY FAVORITE DAY. i have totally not been stewing on this all week. pls give in to the urge to lore dump about Lizardfolk because i've been chewing on my lizard space pirates for like months and i need someone to jump around and be unhinged with me and i'm [happy flapping] SO much. go nuts. political climate, family dynamics, meal traditions, anything. the floor is yours. -- @outpost51
OUTPOST AHHHHHHH be normal be normal be normal
There is a lot here, so I made this as a bulleted list. Some bullet points will include links to any previous posts I’ve made on a particular subject, and others will be external links (I will note where they go and what they are, nothing NSFW, I promise!) Also, minor CW for the 'Society' section for mentions of enslavement. And I will add a cut to save people's dash's because this post is a LONG one.
General Stuff
Lizardfolk come in the form of any reptile and are bipedal. To quote Mariel from AASOAF 2: “I’d seen [Lizardfolk] that looked like chameleons, iguanas, basilisks, skinks, or even their amphibian relatives, like salamanders and newts.” This includes snakes as well! (Snake types do NOT have feet/legs, they are basically giant snakes.)
Like their smaller counterparts, they can regrow limbs.
They come in nearly any color imaginable, though certain clans favor certain shades. To quote Axtapor from AASOAF 2: "[Clan Oxlo's] were hues of blue, black, gray, and purple with the exceedingly rare orchid pink that appeared once every few generations..."
They make a variety of sounds: growls, hisses, clicks, whistles, bellows, chuffing, etc., and can even manage some bird-like sounds. These sounds find their way into their languages, making them VERY difficult for any who aren’t Lizardfolk to learn or speak. (External links! These go to short wildlife Youtube samples of these sounds!)
They mature around the age of 16/17 and, until then, grow a variety of horns, crests, spikes, fins, and even feathers upon their head and neck. These features begin to shed once they enter adulthood, leaving behind their adult traits. More on that here (bonus pic of small-fry Axtapor included lol).
They have a keen sense of smell and can generate heat from their chests to incubate their eggs. More on that here.
Habitat
Lizardfolk hail from The Holtep Empire, a vast desert continent sandwiched between the Farnian Sea (on its eastern coast) and Ofler’s Sea (on its western coast) and shares a northernmost border with Galta (territory claimed by The Pale Kings from the Holtepians in a war many hundreds of years ago and now primarily inhabited by humans).
They prefer hot and arid climates, as they need the sun to help regulate their body temperature. This means they cannot thrive in the cold, so places where it snows or rains often are not ideal for them.
Society
Lizardfolk are organized into three Houses: The House of War, The House of Law, and The House of Dreams. Houses are made up of Major and Minor clans that establish the pecking order within their respective Houses. A little more on that here.
They adhere to a strict patriarchal caste system and historically have and continue to enslave foreign peoples (i.e., those of other races/species). These peoples are only admitted entry to The Holtep Empire if they arrive as slaves, or else they are killed on sight.
They speak dozens of different dialects; each House and social stratum has its own language.
Diet
Lizardfolk are hypercarnivores (i.e., 70+% of their diet is meat) but occasionally make room in their diets for things like starches, fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. Though if they eat too many non-meat foods, they bloat and can become very ill.
Those from more remote/rural areas have been known to eat humans and dwarves as part of their regular diet.
They can consume their food raw and eat parts of animals that are inedible to other races, including shells, carapaces, scales, nails, etc. These present nutritional value for them. See here.
Bonus Round!
Lizardfolk shed about once a year once they reach adulthood and take baths to help remove shedded skin.
Most marry and have children quite young, usually right after their ikismal (rite of passage) ceremony that takes place at the age of 15/16.
They can generate heat from their chests on command. This is an ability Lizardfolk have to take turns incubating their clutches after they've been laid. They'll put the eggs in a sort of sling across their chests and carry on with their business while they keep them warm. Some Lizardfolk who are more pale in coloring even glow a dull red while in this state due to increased blood flow to the area.
Lizardfolk have a strong sense of smell and have a sort of Jacobson's organ on their tongues that they can use to 'taste' the air. They can pick up on common things, like the scent of blood and smoke, but can also memorize the scents of people based on their sweat, pheromones and other unique scent markers. A fun consequence of this is that Lizardfolk children play hide and seek blindfolded so they can find their friends based on scent alone.

body image issues under the cut and mentions of past eating disorders
I think I've realized what's been bothering me and sending me up an down over the past few days. I have always struggled with my weight and I'm on the chubby side. Even at my slimmest as an adult at the peak of my eating disorder in my early 20's my stomach was soft. (and i was having blackouts, was constantly cold and my hair was falling out soooo)
And the last few days i've started seeing more diet talk and weight loss talk on my dash that's untagged as we near the new year. Because believe you me i have everything related to that black listed. I'm as cured from my eating disorders as i can be and I'm normally good at not setting them off. I haven't had a true backslide with any of that in years. But sometimes it's hard. (this is why i had to be very firm with my doctor with speaking neutrally about my weight and to not treat weight loss as something for praise but just as a thing that happened.) but unfortunately for each doctor or nurse I see i have to reiterate this.
And i've been noticing some of my old toxic thoughts resurfacing. Some of my thoughts towards food haven't been healthy lately. Some of my thoughts toward my body haven't been kind. I've noticed that my attitudes towards exercise trying to drift back to how they used to (which is bad bad bad ) and i'm just struggling to get a grip on my thinking. I want to believe my body is worthy of just existing and is worthy of love and all these other things. Trying to not have how i view my own body be different from how i view others. Why is a body type i view as beautiful on another person not one that i view as beautiful for myself?
So yeah just.. not the best time of it tonight.

MIND Diet vs. Mediterranean Diet: What You Need to Know
“Learn how the MIND diet, combining Mediterranean and DASH principles, can support cognitive health and potentially reduce the risk of cognitive decline as you age.”
Eating for a Sharper Mind: The Benefits of the MIND Diet
Are you worried about keeping your mind sharp as you age? A recent study published in the September 18, 2024, issue of Neurology® points to a promising solution: the MIND diet. This exciting research suggests that eating more like the MIND diet can lower the risk of cognitive impairment. But what is the MIND diet, and how does it work? Let’s break it down.
What is the MIND Diet?
The MIND diet is a blend of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, focused specifically on brain health. It emphasizes delicious, nutrient-rich foods while limiting those that may harm cognitive function. Think of it as a grocery list for your brain.
Key Foods to Include
Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and other greens are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. These powerhouses help fight inflammation and improve brain function.
Berries: Blueberries and strawberries are sweet treats that also pack a punch for your brain. They contain compounds that help enhance communication between brain cells.
Nuts: Nuts are a great snack option. Rich in healthy fats, they support brain health by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation.
Fish: Salmon and other fatty fish are filled with omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are essential for brain health and can help improve memory.
Whole Grains: Think oats, quinoa, and brown rice. Whole grains stabilize blood sugar, which is vital for brain energy.
Foods to Avoid
While it’s great to know what to eat, it’s equally important to know what to skip. The MIND diet advises cutting back on:
Red meat
Fried food
Pastries and sweets
Cheese
Processed snacks
Steering clear of these can help protect your brain from the harmful effects of poor nutrition.
The Connection Between Diet and Cognitive Health
So, how does following the MIND diet lead to better brain health? The answer lies in the nutrients. Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables reduce oxidative stress, while healthy fats in fish and nuts help maintain the brain's structure.
A study involving older adults showed that those whose diets closely resembled the MIND plan had a lower risk of cognitive impairment. Imagine feeding your brain the right fuel and seeing it thrive!
A Simple Way to Eat for Brain Health
You don’t have to overhaul your entire diet overnight. Start by making small changes. Perhaps swap out snacks for nuts or add a serving of berries to your breakfast. These tiny adjustments can make a big difference.
Benefits Beyond Brain Health
Eating according to the MIND diet isn’t just for brain power. It can also contribute to better overall health. A balanced diet can lead to improved heart health, better mood, and even weight management. It’s a win-win situation.
Take Control of Your Cognitive Future
The MIND diet offers a clear path to better cognitive health. By choosing brain-friendly foods, you can actively lower your risk of cognitive impairment. Why not give your brain the best chance? Eating well can be enjoyable and fulfilling. Embrace the MIND diet and watch your mind flourish as you age.
In summary, as the studies show, there’s no reason to wait. Start adding these brain-friendly foods to your meals today and take charge of your cognitive future!
