an interesting detail about the one of many things that count orlok represents in this new adaptation of nosferatu is that the only time we see ellen and thomas engaged in full-on physical intimacy, they are both relatively clothed and it is nighttime. her hair is still up, and the deed is frantic and rushed in their front room. they love each other deeply, that much is clear, but there is something about that level of desire and debasement that is still shameful and out of character for thomas. it is a fight to get him there.
when ellen lures count orlok into her trap and they lay together, they are both naked, and the dawn is quickly approaching. she has taken her hair down, and there is a bed large enough for them both. she has discarded all the trappings of modern society, as has he, and the pace of their coupling is languid. serene, almost. where thomas was not willing to meet her except under pressure, orlok meets her at that place where she has always resided alone. there is no fight or shame, not even in their last living moments.

Tim suffers from a situation where he occasionally commits thought crime (thinks about how killing someone would be easier/how he would like someone to be dead/plans out how to kill someone) but does the right thing in person, and doesn't kill people and will act heroically to save even the lives of villains and people he hates. Which gets him cancelled as lacking in morals and being 'two seconds from killing at any time'. While someone like Jason, who commits actual crimes in person but validates the reasons for doing it in his head, gets lauded for why killing drug dealers is excellent and should be morally correct.
Maybe it's a bit law and justice and rules follower of me, but thinking the bad thoughts and still doing the right thing is a better approach than doing the bad thing while telling yourself it's for the right reasons actually.
Actions are more important than what you say in the privacy of your own mind. That's the bit other people can see and interpret.

ok, enough wholesome dadson. time to sexualize terrible fathers. (cw for: dadson incest + FtM son POV + transphobia / misgendering / fetishizing / forcemasc)
transphobic dad: doesn't approve of you transitioning or taking T, but isn't stopping you and doesn't seem turned off by the changes, even after you pass consistently as a man. doesn't know how T even works, always lowkey curious about the changes. he does like that you're so much hornier on T and don't even have periods anymore. tugs at your facial hair (ow? wtf :/) and goes "huh? it's real? I thought you drew it on every morning!" with a hearty laugh. dad joke? he might have actually thought so. backhanded praise, mean jokes at your expense, and moments where he genders you correctly, by accident.
thought you would eventually change your mind and give up transitioning "when you realise that being a man is hard," as if he's not the one making it hard. he might actually think of you as a son at some point, but he was never taught to apologize, he's "always right," he's stubborn, so he will keep calling you a daughter because a father can't show weakness. wants to call you homophobic slurs sooo bad, but that would be admitting defeat.
gets angry when you bring up surgery bc he likes to squeeze your tits and fuck your pussy. won't do any anal because it's gay. and clearly, he's isn't, he says. definitely closeted.
trans boy chaser dad: for better or for worse, only took an interest in your life when he found out you're a trans guy, fixed his relationship with you by treating you more like a date than as his son.
excited, touchy-feely, even creepy. eager to please. just pathetically horny for the way your body's changing from T - he won't misgender you. you get aggressively reaffirmed to the point of it getting annoyingly patronizing actually. regardless, he fucks you hard, encouraging you to moan with your cracking voice, and is too horny to feel bad about the incest. it's a welcome change from the previous emotional distance, but you feel used, like he's taking advantage of your newly high libido.
fixated on your body and everything "clockable," would rather you didn't get any surgery... says you're already perfect as is, from just testosterone... it does feel nice that he takes some sort of pride in having a son now, fully embracing you, the way he finds even all the awkward changes (sparse facial hair, voice cracks etc) not just endearing, not just attractive, but really fucking hot. and it's a relief for your body which craves that release. but. dad might just completely lose interest a few years into T, if you pass consistently.
bisexual, he says. but of course not into cis men.
transmed dad: thinks he knows what's best for your body, forcemascs you in his own ideals, pushing you to work hard to speed up your transition, to become a "real" man. you were so happy that dad accepted you being a trans guy so wholeheartedly and proudly, but the acceptance seems to have turned into overbearing surveillance...
dad insists on doing your T injections himself, because he doesn't trust that you'll actually do them. "no son of mine will be a fucking embarrassing softboy pansy who never transitions for real, have some dignity, god damn it! either you transition fully or you don't transition at all!" ...he pushes you to consider top and bottom surgery asap, to become a "real man," regardless of what you might want. he very excitedly looks forward to the day you can top him with your real cock, like a son should. :)
he makes you like anal because that's how real men do it. you're absolutely not allowed to derive any pleasure from anywhere but your ass and T-dick, and the phantom sensation of a strapon. he's good at working your T-dick though, it's all almost worth it just for that...
love, validation, and praise only when you've "earned it." if you fail to live up to his strict expectations, the things he says fucking hurt. misgenders you as punishment and threatens to withhold your testosterone "since you want to stay a girl so bad."
......
so, all of these options leave you feeling unsatisfied and degraded in one way or another!! yippee! no, there's no option for a Normal About Trans Men And Masculinity Dad, this is the Terrible Fathers dadson poll. you must choose.

Something something about how both care so much about each other that Phaser founded an entire organisation for Tremolo to no longer be afraid, and Tremolo risking his freedom just to keep one secret of Phaser hidden, yet they lack communication in the worst sense that when Tremolo has an outburst of anger, Phaser goes along with whatever Tremolo asks of him, and Tremolo follows Phaser’s orders no matter how bad or unreasonable they are, instead of doing the rational thing of sitting each other down and talking about the actual problem and solving it like well-adjusted people.
It's like they share one singular braincell that only activates while thinking about solving the problems of others (or the current big problem at hand), but once it's between the brothers it instantly shuts down and "make sure your brother stays unharmed and happy – emergency_protocol.exe" is activated.
Obviously, the one braincell is a joke because the plan they crafted with the other rebels was genius, considering the information they had at the time. The way they communicated with Rovian, Luge and Manya to avoid detection from Yuna was beautiful. Not to mention the way Phaser saw the integration of the MIK employees into Goha Cooperation. Sure, it was involved with a cover up, but the very reasonable thought was still there.
I'm not trying to make light of Phaser and Tremolo or their issues. I don't really want to address their overall problems (and neither do they, like ever) or analyse them, because I'm very bad at analysing anything, lol. I just think they are silly and the absolute worst.
I love them.
Thank you, for coming to my yap session that had me searching the right words to express myself with for almost two years. I'm certain there are other reasons to love them and all of them are valid. These are just my main ones after looking past the pretty privilege and the ocean and mythology themed decks, lol.

The Lanes Between
The Lanes Between are a fascinating locale, one that is often described as ‘psychedelic’. Though visually mysterious, the reason behind this appearance is a well-known phenomenon attributed to the inherent nature of Darkness: change.
Why the Lanes Between, specifically, are the source of such pure Darkness goes hand in hand with the Light found within the Heart of worlds. Whilst pure Light offers a stable, internal foundation, Darkness composes the most outer layer of the worlds themselves like an ever-shifting crust, though this area is commonly misinterpreted as being disconnected from a world entirely.
What makes the definition of the Lanes Between difficult to comprehend is that ever changing nature; there are no exact borders within the Lanes Between that one could comprehend as being the end of one world and the start of the next. Some have recorded shifts in the ambient color when traveling between worlds, however, this information is often inconclusive, if not outright contradicted by follow up accounts.
There is much and more that remains unknown regarding the Lanes Between, as they remain a hazardous location for even the most Darkness-leaning wielders. Multiple accounts from Keyblade wielders throughout history have made note of the many odd formations discovered within that ever-shifting space, with particular attention given to meteors of varying colors and sizes that one can even stand on.
Multiple sightings of these meteors converging into larger, often spherical shapes has inspired fierce debate throughout the centuries. While some have concluded that these formations could very well be the beginning of entirely new worlds, others have argued that there is no possibility that a Heart of Worlds could safely form surrounded by such Darkness, effectively ensuring that there cannot, and will not, be more worlds formed beyond those that already exist today. -Excerpt from The Lanes Between: Fact and Theory

A non-historian weighing in on the wine-dark sea
I think one of the things often overlooked in "the wine-dark sea"-discussions is that it's not just about language, I feel like it might also be about wine.
I'm not exactly an expert on these things, but like... wine being stored in glass bottles? New invention. Wine-glasses? Even newer.
Looking into it briefly, there were basically two ways to store wine. Either in pottery, or in barrels. I'd guess that pottery was the favored option, but it's hard to say for sure (barrels are more likely to decompose than pottery).
(Clay is probably cheaper than good wood for barrel-making. But clay needs to be burnt in furnaces, so wood-fuel would still be a problem.)
The main reason I bring this up is because it wouldn't at all be surprising to me for almost everyone at the time to have access to a barrel of wine somewhere.
(But even a clay-vessel would probably have... if not entirely the same experience, similar enough not to be entirely disjointed.)
And the thing about a barrel like that? You can't really expect it to be anything fancy, with a spigot or anything. It'd be easier and more efficient to simply open it up from the top.
(Especially if you're an army, filled with a great many men who can plausibly drink an entire barrel in a single evening.)
Combine that knowledge with the likelihood that most such barrels would be kept in the shade (putting your drinking-liquid in the sun is just going to stop you from having drinking-liquid), and you'll quickly realize that any wine in that barrel? Dark.
As in, not just "dark red" but rather "I can only see that there is liquid in there because it's moving". Because barrels don't let light through, and that much non-water liquid in one place will already be making it incredibly opaque.
So now you have a mysterious, dark liquid sloshing around in your barrel, and part of why you might see it is that it superimposes a darkness over the slightly brighter edges of the barrel.
Then you look out towards the dark sea, so black that it steals away any light the night might give you. And ask yourself, is wine-dark not an excellent descriptor?

All right, back on the hunt for Minsc with Rakha!
Tumblr media
We left off with Rakha blowing up the sorcerer in the grease pit, so the visit to the sewers is off to a great start. I'm metagaming just a smidge to have her walk in the general right direction to find Minsc, but was otherwise planning to continue having her stop for anything else that caught her interest as usual.
However, turns out there really isn't anything, so here we are!
Tumblr media
Gross.
(The irony here, actually, is that we're really only about twenty steps from the entrance to the Bhaalist temple, and Rakha actually would be allowed straight through given her identity, but she doesn't know either of those things. XD )
Rakha's definitely not enjoying this place very much. I think I've tended to headcanon that she has a tremendously sharp sense of smell - mostly the better to scent out blood with, but it also definitely picks up on the horrible scent of raw sewage, mud, and rot that taints this whole area. This particular water - a stagnant puddle offset from the main waterway - is awful, so fetid that it burns where it touches her skin.
Rakha and Minthara's Fly ability from the astral tadpole is a big help here. Wyll and Jaheira aren't so lucky; amusingly, even though the AI usually stops my companions from following me through damaging surfaces, Jaheira charged headlong through the caustic brine following Rakha and Mintahra and took about twenty damage as a result. XD Wyll, bless him, stayed safely on the entry platform until I told him waht to do.
Kind of in character, really, given that Jaheira is definitely getting very anxious about finding Minsc.
Further into the Cistern are a few hooded figures engaged in low-voiced conversation:
Tumblr media
"No mistakes now. The boss won't want no interruptions while the Zhent is here." "Heh, do you mean the Stone Lord, or the *real* boss?"
"Why do we even need the Zhentarim? They worship nothing but their own fattened purses." "Avarice and self-interest. Instruments of the Lord of Murder, wouldn't you say?"
"And what of the Stone Lord when all of this is done?" "Perhaps Lady Orin will reacquaint him with *our* Lord. They are old friends, after all."
"I will not miss sleeping in this arena-sized chamberpot. Our Lord of Murder should have his will worked beneath the sun."
Well, that's all pretty definitive. Agents of Orin. Bhaalists, guarding the Stone Lord who is doing business here.
"We've found him," Rakha mutters. The beast in her head sits up and growls - but to her surprise, before she is even fully roused to strike, Jaheira has darted forward without a word, both hands coming up in an explosion of ice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the Bhaalists dies instantly. The other two are a little more resilient and considerably more annoying, primarily because one of them summons a bunch of angry crows that refuse to die even when their master does.
Overall not a difficult fight though, owing in no small part to Jaheira's element of surprise.
Rakha can't help being mildly surprised - and troubled. Usually she is the one rushing headlong into the fight and leaving the others behind. Jaheira's strain is starting to show in earnest.
"No more," she hears the druid mutter hoarsely as the last enemy falls. "No one else will stand in our way. I will have my friend back, and be damned to them all!"

On that trojan war au thing you're writing. 1. What are the tags for it, cause I'm super interested! And would love to read what you have so far! 2. "And Odysseus is a much grimmer darker man due to his home being one of the places that were first swallowed up by Erebus" - I wanna know more about this. Please tell me more.
Oh , wow, I'm so flattered! I'm very happy it sounds appealing to you <33 This work is a huge passion project of mine so I'm always glad to talk more and more about it, especially since there are many aspects occurring in the background (such as the alternate fates of the main players of the Trojan Conflict) which I cannot properly cover or even explain within the events of the novel itself.
That said: 1) If you mean tags as in ao3 - unfortunately, this work isn't on ao3 my friend :( As I said above, these are elements and concepts in the greek mythology based-fantasy novel I'm currently writing (the concept of which I outlined here in the introductory post of my novel concept!) As for wanting to read whatever writing I currently have available: I currently have three fics available on ao3 that are written in my Pursuing Daybreak verse!
The Prince and Princess series deal with a young Apollo and Artemis and the many consequences they face after Apollo has slain Python. The two works uploaded right now are Exeunt Phoebus Apollo which covers the murder trial of Python and Manent Apanchomene Artemis which covers the intense feelings of helplessness and alienation Artemis experiences after Apollo returns from his banishment and is completely changed. Both of these have themes of family, grief and relationship exploration at their heart.
The third bit of writing I have up is quite outdated but does cover the immediate aftermath of Hyacinthus' death. It's called A Petal Falleth and features Apollo making one of those Big Silly Decisions that have completely unintended but extremely important consequences: namely, instead of the larkspurs being made of Hyacinthus' spilt blood, Apollo anchors the boy's soul to the flowers so Thanatos wouldn't take him. Like the Dawn is also set in this world but because it is nsfw in nature, I wouldn't recommend it as easily as the other three bits of writing. If you don't mind the whole naked men thing though, I'd definitely suggest reading Like the Dawn for a better idea of what my current writing is like (along with eventually getting to see characters like Hector, Andromache and Cassandra/Helenus) Like the Dawn's themes are also different to the other three works with it focusing more on the power dynamics of a god/mortal relationship, exploring masculinity and masculine sexuality and self discovery.
The running theme here, of course, is that all of these bits of writing are centered on Apollo/Artemis or Hyacinth because my novel itself is centered around them. There are, of course, other important characters and figures like Eros, Psyche, Penthesilea and Iaso (one of Asclepius' daughters) but while there is the definite presence of characters from the Trojan War they most certainly aren't at the center of the novel (and the ones that are aren't the Greeks but rather the Trojans i.e Hector, Alexander, Andromache, Cassandra, Helenus, Aeneas, so on and so forth.)
2) The basis of the apocalypse in my work is cosmological! Due to Apollo's err-- untimely departure, there's no longer anyone maintaining the axis of the heavens or the navel of the earth. Because of this, Erebus - whose darkness is usually kept firmly in the spaces between the realms - begins to spill out into both the heavens and the earth. The beasts of Erebus (referring primarily to the Seven Curses - Old Age, Misery, Deceit, Violence etc etc) consume, torment and destroy whatever is inside of Erebus' darkness and Ithaca, as one of the islands on the far edge of the world, was one of the very first places that were devoured in this manner. Odysseus was visiting the Argives at the time for a festival and had left the pregnant Penelope at home since he didn't want her to suffer through the voyage in discomfort. He only finds out about the destruction of Ithaca after it had already been consumed when Athena personally interrupts a feast to warn both him and Diomedes. Needless to say, Odysseus, like everyone else, assumes that everyone on Ithaca has died and thusly is a very, very different man in terms of humour and comport. A part of him still stubbornly clings to the belief that Penelope managed to escape - that she was smart and resourceful enough to see the end approaching and do her best to escape - but that doesn't stop him from being dour for the majority of the time. Diomedes does his best to keep his spirits up in the meantime. Without him around, Odysseus is something of a black hole when it comes to the oppressiveness of his discontent though he does manage to lighten up when in the company of Helen, Clytemnestra and even Menelaus on occasion.
#ginger answers asks#ginger chats about greek myths#Diomedes did a lot to coax Odysseus out of his initial shock when Athena delivered the news#Pretty much the only thing that stuck was Ody getting into the habit of whittling wooden horses and ships#He used to speak to Penelope's stomach and tell a bunch of stories about his youth and adventures#Now he speaks to himself while he's whittling because it makes him feel like he's still speaking to Telemachus#Ody doesn't grieve Penelope at all btw He refuses to behave like she's dead until the gods personally tell him or he sees a body#DIomedes very much thinks it's unhealthy and is very worried for his bestie but he's very deliberately left that topic for Helen#and Clytemnestra to deal with. Like he punches things he can't really do that for Ody's mental health alas#pursuing daybreak posting#The Seven Curses all have names btw#And Erebus isn't really doing anything malevolently either#The gods carved the world sky and ocean out of the darkness - it's their responsibility to maintain it#Of course Nyx and Himera originally held the job of keeping Erebus' darkness at bay#But that power is one that's been broken up and passed down between the generations to prevent precisely this event from happening#Nyx's Night and Himera's Day was first given to Ouranos so he could govern the boundary between the world and the darkness without fail#Ouranos' daughters received Night - specifically Theia and Phoebe#and his sons received Day - namely Hyperion and Coeus#Apollo - ever the overachiever however - ends up being overwhelmingly endowed with these attributes and then some considering#he also gets Delphi - the center of the earth - when he slays Python#So when he errr left to get some milk so to speak - the entire order of things went with him#The remaining balance-keepers are Hecate and Artemis and both of them are Night which is too close to Erebus anyway#So y'know things aren't good like at all LMFAO#Anyway I talked a lot - thank you very much again for asking!! If you have any more questions let me know :D#ginger rambles#odysseus#apollo#erebus#diomedes#greek mythology
