dante roman
passage from Ulysses by james joyce [the bodley head, london, 1967 (seventh impression, w/ corrections), p188].
set in digital reissue of monotype dante roman. dante is the 20th c. statement of renaissance inspired roman & italic by consummate typographer-printer giovanni mardersteig. the founts were initially proprietary to maredrsteig’s private press, the officina bodoni; first showning was a handset edition of boccaccio, Trattello in laude de Dante [officina bodoni, verona, 1955]—typeface name thus acquired. the punches were engraved by one of the last gifted punch-cutters, charles malin of paris, & subsequently served as basis for monotype’s pantograph-engraved matrices; monotype dante first issued in 1957 [english monotype 592]. [cf. john dreyfus, The Work Of Giovanni Maredersteig with Monotype Faces, the monotype corporation, london, 1967.]

Moments in “Fast X” that I felt was bizarre even for this franchise (THIS IS ALL SPOILERS):
1) Pete Davidson randomly shows up just to be Pete Davidson.
2) Jason Momoa’s performance felt like they just told him to act like Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter. Or just a Jojo villain in general.
3) Letty and Cipher get sent to Antarctica, where Gisele just shows up at the end in a submarine despite clearly dying in the 6th one. That’s LITERALLY how the movie ended.
4) They got Alan Ritchson (the guy from Reacher) to play a buff CIA agent who hates barbecues and families. Also, maybe this is just me, but I felt like he was also Jason Momoa’s love interest? I just got the vibes.
5) The weird shot of the camera following Vin Diesel’s muscles which led into the car’s engines.
6) There was a 15-minute sequence where they chased a nuclear bomb that was rolling around the streets of Rome.
7) John Cena using three tequila bottles to power his mini plane.
8) Tyrese taped millions of dollars on his shirt and was just carrying that around the whole movie.
9) Rita Moreno was randomly there as Vin Diesel’s grandma.
10, EDIT) I forgot one other moment. Because F9 retconned Tokyo Drift, there was a sequence where the Agents of SHIELD (I know they’re the “Agency”, but it was basically Marvel’s SHIELD) are reviewing footage of their previous missions. One mission featured clips from Tokyo Drift.

Sooo ive been kinda wondering about Odysseus/Ulysses in 8th circle of hell in Dantes inferno , like i know dante doesnt know of homers version of illiad & odyssey but its kinda funny when you have Odysseus chilling in afterlife and then "sorry dude the upper management decided to move you in the 8th circle"
"The what?"
*gets thrown into 8th circle allongside Diomedes*
Hahahaha yeah!
And most likely indeed Dante never got to hold an actual copy of Iliad or Odyssey given how probably some of the first scripts became translated from Greek to Latin to the mid 1300s from the Byzantine manuscripts and by that time Divine Comedy was already out. I highly doubt that Dante would have some sort of access to that material. So most of his sources come probably from Roman material and Roman scholists at best and from contemporary scholars that would comment and analyze these texts. Now it is interesting how Dante writes his Divine Comedy exactly as a tragicomical thing but he is also imposing the christian beliefs in it. For example Odysseus and Diomedes are not only deceitful people in the texts but they are also pagan so yeah....many sins there! So he is using the concept of Hell in christian belief and adds these charcters who obviously did not have the same beliefs in the afterlife as christians. That alone is a comical use of anachronism, similar to those who make fun of judgement day as comparing other religions
Hahahahaha then imagine Diomedes chilling at Elysium with some gods and get called to hell alongside with Odysseus! HAHAHA!
But yeah the fact that he had access to Roman material makes sense! Hahahaha Not that he would have Odysseus a different fate but still the Romans by n large absolutely HATED the guy! Hahahahaha!

Every time I see a new retcon from the Fast & the Furious franchise happen (especially in 8, 9 and now 10) I'm always like...
"...Letty's ALIVE?
"...there was a BABY?"
"...there was a BROTHER?"
"...Han's ALIVE?"
"...there was an ABUELA!!"
... THE WHOLE TIME?!!

and to get fully contemporary, day 29 of dantepallooza 2018 was made after none other than @ovidiana and their incomparable work with the dead romans society. it has made me laugh, it has made me cry, it reminds me every time why i love working with history. this tiny little tribute was made with lots of love back then. 🌿

Homer: This is my OC Odysseus he’s a trickster
Sophocles: What a compelling villain
Homer: No!! He’s a hero!!!!
Romans: Um, no, he’s totally problematic, he’s definitely evil
Homer: No!!!!!! He’s a good guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Modern readers: Oh so he’s like, an antihero, cool
Homer: Absolutely not. Now you’re just making up words

Which phase of “Fast and Furious” would you say is your favorite?
1) The “we’re just a series about fast cars and racing” phase (1, 2, Tokyo Drift)
2) The “we’re tired of racing, so let’s bring in the Rock and focus on regular action movie stuff” phase (4, 5, 6)
3) The “Vin Diesel watched all the Captain America/Mission Impossible movies and wants to do that in his own franchise” phase (7, 8, 9, Hobbs and Shaw)
4) The “Vin Diesel watched Infinity War/Endgame/the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths and wants to do that in his own franchise” phase (10, and I’m assuming 11 and 12. I know Vin said they’re stopping at 11, but he said that he’s thinking about doing a 12th)
