Transfem authors of fiction: a list

I wrote a version of this list in Swedish for a meatspace friend, figure I might redo it for a tumblr audience. The books recommended are usually novels, and in case of prolific authors, the one recommended is usually the most successful and acclaimed one. I haven't read all of these, but I'm working on it. The list is in alphabetical order after the author's last name. I added some notes to the list, to introduce the authors and their books.

Nota Bene this list is based on my personal research, and largely reflects my own tastes in fiction, as in what I've read and considered reading. And it is of course not at all complete. And it's a transfem authors list, so no transmasc authors no matter how worthy. And it's about authors of fiction, not memoirs or non-fiction. So no Christine Jorgensen, even if she wrote a book I want to read. And Jan Morris gets in based on her two Hav novels, not her more prolific non-fiction work. Links are to my reviews on this blog if they exist.

Anders, Charlie Jane - SF/F writer, debuted with Choir Boy (2005), but most famous for All The Birds in the Sky (which won a Nebula).

Aoki, Ryka - her latest sf/f novel Light from Uncommon Stars is her most popular, but she has published both fiction and poetry before.

Becker, Saga - Våra Tungor Smakar våld (Swedish author, her book is untranslated, although quite good)

Binnie, Imogen - Nevada

Daniels, April - Dreadnought and its sequel Sovereign. Novels about a teenage trans girl superhero.

Deane, Maya - Wrath Goddess Sing

Felker-Martin, Gretchen - Manhunt (horror novel)

Kaveney, Roz - Tiny Pieces of Skull (also wrote the Rhapsody of Blood fantasy series, plus numerous poetry collections and non-fiction)

Kiernan, Caitlin R. - Usually categorized as a horror author, written numerous novels and short stories since her debut novel SIlk in 1998. The most acclaimed are probably her novels The Red Tree and The Drowning Girl (which won the Bram Stoker Award)

Leitz, May - Fluids and Girlflesh (review forthcoming)

Morris, Jan - Hav (mostly wrote non-fiction, history books and travel literature, Hav is an omnibus of her two novels about Hav, both "imagined travelogues" about a fictitious country)

Peters, Torrey - Detransition Baby

Plett, Casey - Little Fish (Lambda award winner)

Pollack, Rachel - Prolific writer of several kinds of books, including a pioneering career as a sf/f writer. Did her fictional debut with a short story in a 1971 anthology (credited under her deadname) and published her first novel Golden Vanity in 1980, which are literally the earliest pieces of fiction by an out trans person (not memoir or non-ficton) I've been able to find. So very much a pioneer. Her most acclaimed book is probably Godmother Night (1996) which won the World Fantasy Award. Also wrote comics, most notably Doom Patrol.

Also, little note about the process of Virulent Beelzebub: It was one of the few things I wrote that I actually rewrote the draft of. The beginning and ending remained the same throughout, but the middle had a lot of little things changed, such as Erika being a tree, Koga randomly appearing throughout the pasta in person, someone taking away the player's Rattata after it was poisoned and giving them antidotes in exchange, and some other stuff I've forgotten.

Rugby U16 and U19 Championships: The Junior Wallabies have confirmed a 40-player squad for their opening camp of 2023. The 48-player group, which was selected following the U16 and U19 Championships last year and was scheduled to meet for a training camp at the AIS from February 26 to March 5, has been reduced.

The first camp of the year is taking place in advance of the U20 World Championships, which begin in South Africa in late June. Flyhalf Tom Lynagh is the main addition since the announcement in November.

The son of the famous Wallaby Michael, Lynagh made his first run-on appearance for the Reds last week after spending the previous season playing for UQ in Queensland club rugby.

The team is full of talented players that stood out during the Super Rugby Pacific trials, with Max Jorgensen, a teenage phenomenon, at the forefront.

  Taj Annan, Floyd Aubrey, and Harry McLaughlin-Philips, who played out of position on the wing against the Force at the beginning of the month, are all Reds teammates of Lynagh’s.

Daniel Maiava, a backrower who made his Super Rugby debut in 2022, has been picked as one of the seven Rebels.

Due to his Sevens obligations, flyer Darby Lancaster, who will be named in John Manenti’s squad to travel to Los Angeles and Vancouver at the end of the month, was not taken into consideration.

Today marks four years since I was molested by Daniel Jorgensen at an Owl City show in Atlantic City. Today I have made the decision to publicly share the victims impact statement I read in court with everyone. It is posted below.

4 years have passed but not a day goes by that this trauma doesn't impact my life. Because of what I was put through, I was unable to continue in traditional high school due to anxiety, especially around male teachers. I quit dancing, which I had done for 12 years at the time, because I was too uncomfortable knowing that I could be watched by men. I had a fear of men instilled in me to the point that I am still hyper aware when they are around me out of eyesight. I have trouble talking to men at work, any time one compliments me, even in the most innocent way, I am filled with fear. Even though I am no longer a child, I involuntarily revert back to my [2013 self], terrified and confused. The strain this caused on my relationships with friends and family is heartbreaking. I became distant and very easily agitated. The normal high school days every kid deserves were stolen out from under me. It happened the weekend before I was set to start high school...now this fall I'm heading to college. I dreamed for 4 years to be dealing with normal teenage stress, like boys or prom, but instead I was forced to deal with what I was put through. I couldn't relate to people my own age, and found it difficult to maintain friendships. My mind was always somewhere else as I dealt with flashbacks and struggling to understand what exactly happened to me. I lost the ability to trust not only others, but also myself. I didn't know who I could trust...I didn't feel like I could really trust anyone. My mind started to register everyone as a threat. I pushed people away because of the fear and walls I felt like I needed to have up. I went through my teen years terrified. Now those high school days are gone and I can't ever get them back. It's been 4 years, and I've worked as hard as one possibly can to heal around an open wound, but until there is justice for what has been done, the wound will remain to be not fully healed. I want nothing more than to be able to heal fully. To be able to live my life knowing that I didn't suffer in vain. To be free from the chains that have held me down with for so long now. No punishment given could possibly make up for what I was put through. But I don't care about a jail sentence, ideally it would be nice to hear, but it's not my goal. My goal in this is to keep it from happening to another young girl. I work with kids, I see their innocence everyday and become furious at the thought of any of them having that stolen from them. I want to be able to rest assured that I am keeping at least one predator away from their innocence. That is all I care about at this point. All children deserve a childhood, untainted and clean. No child deserves to have to sit and question their worth and their life because they feel both were stolen by monsters like Daniel Jorgensen.

You’ve done the Mormummy, but what about his counterpart, Daniel? To me he’s interesting in that he was handled so poorly(including somehow making him caucasian instead of asian as intended) that he pulls the entire dlc down in terms of narrative.

Yes, a reason for an intensely literal use of "why do they look like that," perfect!

For those not in the know, Fallout New Vegas lead designer and project director Josh Sawyer said in 2016 that Daniel was meant to be a man of Asian descent, and he has no idea how the character wound up white. Oops. It's a shame that we never got to see Daniel as he was intended to appear, but regarding the relationship the missionary has with the Sorrows, the Dead Horses, the White Legs, and the Burned Man, I really don't think it changes how I feel about what's happening in the narrative. Daniel isn't as careless in his dealings with the tribes of Zion as his mummified counterpart, but he's still a single outsider speaking on behalf of a people he doesn't fully understand or belong to, with all the authority of a 19-year-old kid in business attire who just knocked on your front door and is sporting a name tag that says "Elder Jorgensen." As I said under my Joshua Graham bingo card, I think that the problems with Honest Hearts stem from the DLC's weaknesses as a whole, and not from any single character in it.

Daniel suffers from a lot of the same character flaws as the Toasted Legate, particularly the one where he's trying to protect the Sorrows by doing the same thing that led to the Sorrows becoming endangered in the first place. The only difference is he's proselytizing, not exterminating. For a guy who's very concerned about the tribe's threatened extinction, he seems very keen on hastening the erasure of their beliefs in the name of that survival.
