Spring 1908 "She’s gone, Daniel."
"The hell do you mean she's gone?!"
"Josephine and Lucile! They’ve taken everything."
"The silver, the heirlooms—gone. I came home and found both of my properties empty."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the edge of the desk. "You let my daughter run off? With your sister, no less?"
"I didn’t know she was planning this. They left without a word."
Daniel’s fist crashed down on the desk, the sound like a thunderclap in the confined space. "You imbecile! You were supposed to keep her in line, to watch over her. And you let her slip through your fingers?!"
"Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is for my reputation?"
"OUR reputation?"
Silas struggled to maintain his composure, the pressure bearing down on him like a vise.
"I’ve been doing everything I can to find out what direction they went, but it's difficult without a proper paper trail… I couldn’t have foreseen this."
Daniel’s face contorted with rage, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "Couldn’t foresee? You’re the man of the house! It’s your goddamn responsibility to keep her in line! I warned you about her hysteria!"
"You sound like one of those damned Socialists, ruining this country, making excuses. She was given to you. You were supposed to take care of her!"
Silas flung his arms up and took a big swing in frustration, pacing around the room.
"I’m struggling to understand why this is such a bad thing for us!"
"With Josephine out of the picture, you won’t need to worry about her tarnishing the family or the company’s reputation! Wouldn't it be reasonable to just let her fade away?"
"I did not give her to you just for you to allow her to fade away!" Daniel sighed massaging his temples. Silas persisted, "The pile of unopened letters? You already denied Jackson or Edith from visiting, and you mentioned before in the past her medicine was costly."
"It's not always about the money, Silas. She's my daughter."
"She's sick. It's all part of the process to cure her." Daniel sighed, catching his breath for a moment as he mumbled into his hand, “Clearly, sending her to an all-girls reformatory was a bad decision based on her current condition. "
"We've been over this! Her return was to be gradual, with her progress measured carefully. Your marriage was supposed to be a beacon of stability for her recovery. Which brings me to my final point."
“If you can’t even manage your own wife, how can I trust you to run a business with hundreds of employees? I took your family under my wing to work alongside my son because I believed in you, I believed in what was best for your family."
"You are a failure. A disgrace."
Silas’s face burned with humiliation, "I will find her, Daniel. I swear it. But you need to understand, she—"
"Understand?” Daniel sneered as he stood from his desk, “The only thing I understand is that you’ve failed. Get her back, Silas. Or your job, your livelihood—everything is on the line. Do you hear me?"
Through gritted teeth, a bitter "Yes, sir," escaped Silas’s lips as Daniel took his leave for the night, leaving Silas standing alone in the office.
"DAMN IT."

Boiling Point
Movies watched in 2024
Boiling Point (2021, UK)
Director: Philip Barantini
Writers: Philip Barantini & James Cummings
Mini-review:
This certainly lives up to its title: the tension slowly builds and builds until all hell breaks loose during the final act. I'm a huge fan of long/single takes, and this movie makes the most of that format. It's amazing how every single second matters in some way or another, regardless of how unimportant or casual it may seem. And of course, pulling off a 90-minute long take means both cast and crew are firing on all cylinders. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours of rehearsals and work went into making Boiling Point, but I hope they know it was absolutely worth it.

Franklin's lost expedition crew
I was looking at posts about AMC's The Terror and I kept getting confused by the use of first names, so I wanted to see how many of the characters had the same names. Arranging the crew in alphabetical order, I got:
1 x Abraham (Seeley)
4 x Alexander (Berry, McDonald, Paterson, Wilson)
5 x Charles (Best, Coombs, Des Voeux, Johnson, Osmer)
1 x Cornelius (Hickey)
2 x Daniel (Arthur, Bryant)
3 x David (Leys, Macdonald, Young) + Bonus: Bryant in the show but most historical sources I found list him as Daniel
1 x Edmund (Hoar)
3 x Edward (Couch, Genge, Little)
2 x Edwin (Helpman, Lawrence)
3 x Francis (Crozier, Dunn, Pocock)
1 x Frederick (Hornby) + Bonus: Des Voeux, whom I have seen referred to as Frederick rather than Charles on occasion
6 x George (Cann, Chambers, Hodgson, Kinnaird, Thompson, Williams)
1 x Gillies (MacBean)
1 x Graham (Gore)
7 x Henry/Harry (Collins, Goodsir, Le Vesconte, Lloyd, Peglar, Sait, Wilkes)
10 x James (Brown, Daly, Elliot, Fairholme, Fitzjames, Hart, Reid, Ridgen, Thompson, Walker) + Bonus: Ross, who was not part of the expedition but appears in the show
23 x John (Bailey, Bates, Bridgens, Brown, Cowie, Diggle, Downing, Franklin, Gregory, Hammond, Handford, Hartnell, Irving, Kenley, Lane, Morfin, Murray, Peddie, Strickland, Sullivan, Torrington, Weekes, Wilson)
2 x Joseph (Andrews, Healey)
1 x Josephus (Geater)
1 x Luke (Smith)
1 x Magnus (Manson)
1 x Philip (Reddington)
1 x Reuben (Male)
2 x Richard (Aylmore, Wall)
8 x Robert (Carr, Ferrier, Golding, Hopcraft, Johns, Sargent, Sinclair, Thomas)
3 x Samuel (Brown, Crispe, Honey)
1 x Solomon (Tozer)
16 x Thomas (Armitage, Blanky, Burt, Darlington, Evans, Farr, Hartnell, Honey, Johnson, Jopson, McConvey, Plater, Tadman, Terry, Watson, Work)
22 x William (Aitken, Bell, Braine, Clossan, Fowler, Gibson, Goddard, Heather, Hedges, Jerry, Johnson, Mark, Orren, Pilkington, Read, Rhodes, Shanks, Sims, Sinclair, Smith, Strong, Wentzall)

Things I know about the people on Taskmaster Australia season 2, before I start watching it (I mean, it's sort of season 3, or something, but it's season 2 now, we have to refer to them by the order in which they're aired or it'll get incredibly confusing):
- When I was browsing the Chortle MICF reviews to see if there was anyone I didn't know who looked interesting and maybe I'd want to look up their stuff and/or add them to my Edinburgh list this year, I clicked on someone named Jenny Tian. I saw the words "Tik-Tok star" and closed the page again, no longer interested. Perhaps it will turn out that was totally unfairly judgmental of me and she's great. I sort of hope so. Please prove me wrong and tear down my unfair biases, Tik-Tok star.
- Obviously I know Lloyd Langford. I don't know him all that well, but he's turned up as a guest on plenty of things I've watched and listened to, and I've almost always liked him well enough. By "almost always", I mean "every time except that time when I was going through a phase of watching everything I could find by Rhod Gilbert, and I watched that old panel show called Ask Rhod Gilbert, on which Lloyd Langford was a regular, and it was a terrible show, but that's not Lloyd Langford's fault".
- Wil Anderson was the favourite "alternative comedian" of Zoe Coombs Marr's character Dave, in her stand-up show Dave, in which the joke was that he's actually a very mainstream and popular Australian comedian and her character is ignorant for considering him alternative (based on reviews I've read, I think when she performed that show in the UK, she changed it from Wil Anderson to Adam Hills). Also, Wil Anderson was the guy Daniel Kitson decided to start a parody beef with in 2005, and in retaliation Wil Anderson sicced a horrible journalist on Kitson, which became that routine in his 2005 show about how much he hated that journalist. I think in that routine too, the joke was sort of that Wil Anderson is a very mainstream popular comedian (Kitson ironically suggesting that he was going to upset the mainstream comedians with his routine). Despite this, I don't actually know any more about him than that.
- Anne Edmonds is the reason Lloyd Langford is no longer in Wales, because he got married to her in Australia. Normally I try to be careful not to define female comedians by their male partners, but in my defense, in this case, most comedians I know are British, so it's reasonable for me to know the British one and not the Australian one in this couple. Her latest stand-up show has recently been released as a special, though, and I've downloaded it and intend to watch it, and then I will know her better than him as I haven't seen Lloyd Langford's stand-up. But for now I know nothing else about her.
- No idea who Josh Thomas is, though I don't mean that as an insult, like, "This guy's so unimportant that I haven't even heard of him!" I mean it as, I don't know a lot about the Australian comedy industry. Josh Thomas is probably lovely.
- Fun fact, Australian Taskmaster Tom Gleeson used to be in a band with the guy who stole Daniel Kitson's girlfriend in 2004.
- Tom Cashman is a great Taskmaster's assistant. Though I only know that from the previous season, I haven't started the new one yet so I guess it's possible that he's got much worse at his job since then. Hopefully not though.

Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (John Hough, 1974)
Cast: Peter Fonda, Susan George, Adam Roarke, Vic Morrow, Eugene Daniels, Kenneth Tobey, Roddy McDowall, Lynn Borden, Adrianne Herman, James W. Gavin. Screenplay: Lee Chapman, Antonio Santean, based on a novel by Richard Unekis. Cinematography Michael D. Margulies. Production design: Philip Leonard. Film editing: Christopher Holmes. Music: Jimmie Haskell.
"Dirty Mary" is Mary Coombs (Susan George), a petty thief and groupie who gets involved with Larry Rayder (Peter Fonda), a would-be NASCAR star, when he pulls off a supermarket heist with the aid of Deke Sommers (Adam Roarke), an alcoholic auto mechanic, and goes on a run that develops into a widespread, high-speed car (and helicopter) chase, masterminded by state police captain Everett Franklin (Vic Morrow). And that's pretty much all you need to know about Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, except that the title does a disservice to Deke, the third in the trio and the only close-to-interesting character in the film. Mary and Larry might as well be animated cartoons for all the humanity their characters generate, and George and Fonda play them accordingly. (George's manic performance, often lapsing into her native British accent, got on my nerves.) But Roarke makes some effort to provide some nuance to Deke, a loser whose fondness for the bottle makes him unemployable even though he's shown to be a master at making bashed-up automobiles run. He's also somewhat in love with Larry, his one chance at redemption. Otherwise, the real stars of the film are the cars, a 1966 Chevrolet Impala, a 1969 Dodge Charger, a bunch of Dodge Polara police cars, and that helicopter. You pretty much know how it's all going to end, and when it does it stops, having accomplished the inevitable with no need to point a moral or adorn a tale.

Join us for the midnight release of "The Ghost and Mrs Muir," a timeless classic brought to life with a modern twist. Starring Suzanne Pamphile as Lucy Muir and Alexiel de Ravenswood as Captain Gregg and Reinhardt Hendrickson, this production features an all-star cast, including James Hoegerl as Miles Fairley and Charles Early as Mr. Coombes. With an original score by Alexiel de Ravenswood and two pieces arranged from the classic score by Bernard Herrmann, this audio drama will transport you to the world of Gull Cottage and the mysterious spirit who haunts it. Get ready for a hauntingly beautiful listening experience as we bring the story of "The Ghost and Mrs Muir" to life.
As the driving force behind Zariya Hollow, and our final episode of our three part Valentine’s Day special: “The Ghost and Mrs Muir," I have a deep-rooted love for this classic story. My journey with Captain Daniel Gregg began as a young child surfing the internet, listening to his tale being told on the radio. Charles Boyer's portrayal of the Captain left a lasting impression on me, imbuing the character with a subtle French accent that has stuck in my memory to this day. For over 20 years, I have dreamed of bringing this tale to life on stage or radio. And now, with "The Ghost and Mrs Muir," I am proud to say that my dream has finally become a reality. In 2012 I was honored to get the license to arrange two pieces from the stunning score by Bernard Herrman, which are now included in our audio drama. And, as an added touch, I also composed original music for the production, infusing the timeless story with my own unique sound. As the director, producer, and star of this episode, I have poured my heart and soul into every aspect of its production. From sound effects to overall sound design, I have worked tirelessly to create an immersive and captivating listening experience for our audience. I am also thrilled to be working with a talented and dedicated cast, including Suzanne Pamphile, James J Hoegerl, and Charles Early. Each actor brings their own unique skills and perspectives to their respective roles, elevating the story to new heights. As we approach Valentine's Day and Black History Month, I am especially proud to announce that Suzanne and I are the first POC to play Lucy Muir and Captain Gregg in a production of "The Ghost and Mrs Muir." This is a true testament to the diversity and inclusiveness of our industry, and I am honored to be a part of it. At the stroke of midnight on the 14th, I will be releasing this episode for all to enjoy. I hope that listeners will be transported to the world of Gull Cottage and the salty dog who haunts it.

In the months that followed, the Harrington household witnessed an unprecedented flurry of activity. The once-quiet farm was now a hive of industry, with workers toiling tirelessly. Most of these laborers were brought in through the Coombes family's connections, a fact that weighed heavily on Eddy's mind. While he contributed what he could, it became increasingly apparent that the scope of the project exceeded what he initially expected.
From dawn until dusk, workers hammered, sawed, and excavated, transforming Eddy's land. Barns were hoisted, relocated, and reconfigured.
A grand wooden arch was erected at the farm's entrance, rustic and imposing, crowned by the massive horns of a longhorn bull. Yet, even this striking arch seemed insignificant compared to the towering edifice that was taking shape on his property.
Eddy's beloved garden found a new home to the left of the house, near the well, while the outhouse was shifted to the right. Piece by piece, the familiar landmarks of his farm were shuffled aside to make room for the looming mansion.
The newly constructed farmhouse, coated in a vibrant shade of red, featured white-painted woodwork adorned with ornate arches.
Daniel and all his contractors insisted it was indeed a Farmhouse but Eddy has grown skeptical.
By mid-autumn, the towering mansion stood as a testament to the whirlwind of change that had swept over the land. In just a few short months, nearly everything had been altered. This new house was a colossus compared to the one Eddy had lovingly crafted with his own hands and everything he had built has been moved and pushed aside.
The reality of what exactly the term "little" meant in the context of his dealings with Daniel was dawning on him, Eddy knew Daniel loved Josephine despite the mistakes she had made and knew she was bound to get doted on with the new marriage. But this? This was beyond excessive.

Lyrics:
We are young, we run green
Keep our teeth nice and clean
See our friends, see the sights
Feel alright
We wake up, we go out
Smoke a fag, put it out
See our friends, see the sights
Feel alright
Are we like you?
I can't be sure
Of the scene, as she turns
We are strange, in our worlds
But we are young, we get by
Can't go mad, ain't got time
Sleep around if we like
But we're alright
Got some cash, bought some wheels
Took it out 'cross the fields
Lost control, hit a wall
But we're alright
Are we like you?
I can't be sure
Of the scene, as she turns
We are strange, in our worlds
But we are young, we run green
Keep our teeth nice and clean
See our friends, see the sights
Feel alright
Are we like you?
I can't be sure
Of the scene, as she turns
We are strange, in our worlds
Songwriter:
But we are young, we run green
Keep our teeth nice and clean
See our friends, see the sights
Feel alright
Daniel Goffey / David N Yazbek / Gareth Coombes / Michael Quinn
SongFacts:
"Alright" is a song by British alternative rock band Supergrass. It was released with "Time" as a double A-side single from their debut album, 'I Should Coco' (1995), on 3 July 1995. It was concurrently released on the soundtrack of the 1995 movie Clueless, which helped it become a big hit for the band. It peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, number six in Iceland, number eight in Ireland, number 30 in France and number 96 in Australia.
"Alright" received a great deal of airplay in the United Kingdom. The "bona fide teen anthem", with its upbeat lyrics and cheerful piano tune, seemed to epitomise British youth culture at the time, when Britpop was at its height. The band's youthful appearance (lead singer Gaz Coombes had only just turned 19 when it was released) added weight to the lyrics.
However, Coombes himself argued in an interview around October 1995, "it wasn't written as an anthem. It isn't supposed to be a rally cry for our generation. The stuff about 'We are young/We run green…' isn't about being 19, but really 13 or 14. and just discovering girls and drinking."
"It's meant to be light hearted and a bit of a laugh, not at all a rebellious call to arms." with Danny Goffey also saying: "It certainly wasn't written in a very summery vibe. It was written in a cottage where the heating had packed up, and we were trying to build fires to keep warm."

TAKE COUNSEL: Jury expert Dr. Phil's 8 warnings
youtube
COOMBS: Would you advise him to take the stand?
McGRAW: Absolutely not. It didn't take me a nanosecond to answer that question. I do not think he should take the witness stand.
I think it's fraught with danger.
2. I think they could beat him up terribly.
3. I think he would not make a good witness.
4. He has a hard time following rules.
5. I think he has a hard time with an edit button and knowing when to stop talking.
6. I think he would run afoul of the judge.
7. I think his hyperbole and all the things that he tends to do about going too far in his rhetoric — I think would get him in trouble.
8. I think he could open himself up to perjury and cross-examining... cross-examination on a lot of things he doesn't want to talk about.
[at 3-minute-mark.]
POLITIFACT Gag order doesn’t prevent Trump from testifying
Donald Trump Statement: 'I’m not allowed to testify' because of a gag order.
Former President Donald Trump said that a gag order in his New York trial prevents him from testifying.
'Well, I’m not allowed to testify. I’m under a gag order I guess, right?' Trump said Thursday at the end of the day at the Manhattan courthouse.
Trump added, 'I’m not allowed to talk' and 'I’m not allowed to testify because of an unconstitutional gag order.
We’re appealing the gag order, and let’s see what happens.'
The next day, he corrected his false statement while responding to a reporter’s question before court.
'The gag order is not to testify,' Trump said Friday. 'The gag order stops me from talking about people and responding when they say things about me.'
(A Trump campaign spokesperson directed us to his Friday statement.)
At PolitiFact, we recognize politicians who correct their statements, but we still fact-check their initial statements if those statements drew attention.
We have fact-checked many politicians or political figures who admit, usually through a spokesperson, that they misspoke, including Joe Biden in 2020.
Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in an alleged scheme to cover up a hush money payment to adult film actor Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election.
On April 1, Judge Juan Merchan issued a gag order against Trump to limit his speech and prevent him from continuing to attack witnesses outside of court.
But the order does not deny Trump his constitutional right to testify in court.
'A judge never prohibits a defendant from testifying,' said Evan Gotlob, a criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor. 'Once the (district attorney) rests their case, he is more than welcome to testify.'
Usually, criminal defendants don’t testify, and if Trump doesn’t testify, jurors will be instructed not to view that as a sign of guilt, Gotlob said.
When the trial resumed Friday, Merchan told Trump that the gag order 'does not prohibit you from taking the stand' and that it applies only to 'extrajudicial statements.'
These are statements made outside the courtroom.
Gag order limits Trump but does not silence him
The gag order aims to curb what Trump is allowed to say related to the case on social media, media interviews or campaign rallies, but it does not silence him.
Trump may still talk about the case on the campaign trail and criticize key people with power in the prosecution.
Merchan’s order bars Trump from speaking about witnesses, lawyers, court staff members and their families if those statements interfere with the case.
He also must not talk about jurors.
But Trump may still criticize District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Merchan and may still call the case a 'Biden trial,' an assertion we have rated False.
The case is being prosecuted under New York law, and there is no evidence Biden is involved.
The gag order’s goal is to limit 'what Trump can say to protect the integrity of the evidence and proceedings,' said Neama Rahmani, a former prosecutor who co-founded West Coast Trial Lawyers.
On April 30, Merchan fined Trump $9,000 for violating the gag order.
Before the trial started, Trump told reporters he planned to testify. PolitiFact’s ruling
Trump said, 'I’m not allowed to testify' because of a gag order.
The gag order does not prevent Trump from taking the stand in court. A judge cannot deny Trump his constitutional right to testify.
The gag order bars Trump from talking about witnesses, court staffers and jurors. But it still allows him to talk about the case, the judge and the district attorney.
We rate this statement False.

2023: The Australian queer year in review
As the year comes to an end, we look back at some of the Australian LGBTQIA+ news, events and queer moments that made up 2023.
January
Midsumma: Melbourne held its annual multi-week Midsumma Festival where former premier Daniel Andrews marched with pride goers.
Sam Stosur retires: Sam, who won the US Open singles titles plus seven Grand Slam doubles titles, retired at the Australian Open. Sam publicly came out later in her career in 2020.
February
WorldPride: Sydney became the epicentre of the queer universe when hosting WorldPride. The two-week extravaganza featured an opening night concert, the traditional Mardi Gras parade, a Human Rights Conference, a Bondi Beach party, a pride march over the Bridge and a closing party.
Big names like Kylie Minogue, Dannii Minogue, Sugababes, Agnes, Nicole Scherzinger, Kim Petras, Ava Max, Jessica Mauboy, Courtney Act and Casey Donovan featured throughout WorldPride. However, there was only one true icon of the event: Progress Shark.
youtube
