the worst part about having very specific niche interests is trying to track down a paper that doesn’t appear to be available anywhere online and the most of a trace you can find of it is mentioned in a phd thesis from 1999 or in the author’s cv where it’s like presented before the international sociology of sport association proceedings, oslo, norway :)

Sam Gagner staying ready for Oilers in NHL playoff run
Article content As the Edmonton Oilers start their run to a possible sixth Stanley Cup, Sam Gagner continues to have his nose pressed up against the playoff glass. We’re getting ahead of ourselves here, but if the Oilers were to beat the Florida Panthers, Gagner, who is the only player in the last 35 years to have an eight-point night, would not get his name on the silver mug. He won’t get Gagner engraved unless he gets into a game in the finals, which would take some injuries because Derek Ryan and Sam Carrick are also healthy scratches for Game 1. On the depth chart, they’re ahead of the 34-year-old, who was Oilers first-round pick in 2007. Article content The other criteria to being one of the 52 maximum names (players, the coaches, trainers, management) on the Cup is playing half the Oilers league games (41) but Gagner only dressed for 28 with 15 games on the farm in Bakersfield. So Gagner, one of only three Oilers (Wayne Gretzky and current Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey) with eight points in a single game, falls short of the games played criteria. Yes, a team can petition the NHL to get a player’s name added. And they sometimes make a successful appeal after extenuating circumstances. Maybe there’s a scenario where Oilers captain Connor McDavid stumps with coach Kris Knoblauch to put the veteran into a game, should the Oilers be up 3-1 in the series But, for now, the fan favourite Gagner, who has only played in 11 playoff games in his career (six in Philly, five in Columbus) sits and waits. He practised on a fifth line with Ryan and Carrick at Friday’s full skate. Here’s two examples of petitions that worked. *When he was Detroit Red Wings’ GM, Ken Holland and ownership petitioned the league to have Vladimir Konstantinov’s name engraved in 1998 even though he hadn’t played a single game that season after his career ended after a limo accident right after the Wings’ 97 Cup victory. He was added. Article content *The 2015 Blackhawks successfully petitioned to get Daniel Carcillo’s name on the Cup even though he hadn’t played the required 41 league games, with none in the playoffs. They won the appeal, likely because Carcillo was close, dressing for 39 in regular-season. Of course, we remember the flip side of the coin when former Oilers owner Peter Pocklington put father Basil’s on the Holy Grail in 1984. Basil had no role with the first Cup winning team except being Peter Puck’s dad. The league frowned on Pocklington’s ploy. They put XXXX over the name on the Cup. May the lord never have mercy on the bastards in the CHL who could’ve helped end the abuse but didn’t and even partook in it. Those poor babies, literal children that were tortured by authority figures and older players that were supposed to teach them and cultivate them into talented young men. They uprooted their entire lives, as minors, away from their mothers and fathers and siblings and friends to chase after their lifelong dreams only to be shit on in every literal sense of the word. God.
Is there anything I should do? Or even, is there anything we CAN do as fans? I feel disgusting just reading all about it and then sitting back and letting it play out. Bless Carcillo and Taylor and all the others victimized by hockey culture.

Absolutely physically disgusted at the people throwing nasty comments back at Daniel Carcillo and using the 'type of player' he was a method of belittling or discrediting the allegations in that lawsuit
No actions of a single player during their career excuses the existence of that kind of systematic abuse within the CHL, or any environment. And what motivation would he possibly have for fabricating any of it?
I can only hope that no matter the outcome of the lawsuit, some positive change and awareness comes from it for the future hockey generations

PSA: Paul Bissonette is a complete asshole
Here’s everything y’all need to know about a fight he just started with Dan Carcillo on Twitter.
You can say of Carcillo what you want, but at least he acknowledges that he was a racist, homophobic, sexist asshole and constantly tries to make amends and better himself. He’s also a dude who holds other men accountable for their actions and for that alone I salute the guy.
But since Bissonette has just been named “the most influential person in hockey” and so many people still think his antics are fucking hilarious, this will probably be an overall horrible experience for Carcillo, who right now has thousands of Bissonette’s followers threatening him online.
God I hate hockey sometimes.

what was it like getting noticed by daniel carillo on twitter
incredible. what an incredible guy. instead of letting the culture shape him, he chose to acknowledge his own mistakes and call out the coaches and staff who’d mistreated him, physically, emotionally, for years. if you’re not familiar with daniel carcillo’s fight against abuse in hockey, from juniors to the nhl, please give his twitter a scroll. i project affection on idealized versions of hockey players, but carcillo inspires me real respect. it’s scary, to take on the pillars of a sport like that. hockey’s built on racism, sexism and a lot of abuse. there’s very powerful men who’d like to keep that quiet. even if he’s retired, he’s a stanley cup champ with a big platform, and he made the choice to take a stand. hope my dumbass normie meme made him laugh. he deserves to
