Ouma Kokichi (Cookie) on Options

Saw a post. Tumblr's based on your likes algorithm has been giving us a lot of Kokichi meta lately, so that's fun. Gets us in an introspective mood. The post was about how it doesn't make sense for me to have planned my dead from the very beginning. That the press situation was unplanned, that if given the chance to survive--any chance at all--then I would take it. Actually, after writing this all out I was going back to through my own tag to find something and then ran into two other posts back-to-back that seem to have very contradictory views on the matter. Funny how we reblogged both!

So which is it? Was the press a final hail-Mary from me when I was backed into a corner with nowhere else to go but six feet under? Well...

It was.

But that's a lie.

It was but it wasn't. For me, anyway.

It was absolutely last-ditch effort with no other options to end the killing game, but more than that it was kind of a mix of the two. A last-ditch effort--a contingency plan--and something I'd been wanting to happen for a while. I was tired.

I didn't intend to die, but I of course kept the possibility in the back of my mind about what sort of death I could set up if there was no other option. It was a plan I hoped when I made it that I'd never have to use. But then when that point finally came, with no other option? I felt some kind of… I don't wanna say relief but… It's more like by that point I figured it was inevitable and warranted. After everything I'd done, the least I could do was make it messy to stick it to the mastermind. To save everyone left.

It's like I was waiting for an excuse to throw in the towel. To atone somehow. But I kept telling myself I wasn't allowed to unless there was literally no other option, because I was more useful to everyone alive than dead. If I didn't believe that then I wouldn't have done what I did to Go-kun or Iru-chan. The only reason I knew she had to die rather than simply let her kill me was because with me dead no one would be left to smoke out her lies. She would have won, and everyone would have died.

Sure, maybe Saihara would have been able to figure it out, but was I willing to take that chance when I was the key player here? Iru-chan isn't stupid. She knew I was the biggest obstacle in the trial. That's why she went of me and not someone easier to lead on like Momota. So of course I had to live to keep everyone safe.

And for a split second during that trial I thought, maybe now it was finally my time.

And that's why I asked that question at the very beginning.

About what would happen if there was a 50/50 split in the vote.

What would happen to an accomplice.

I would have been content with that if the 50/50 had happened. I did my part. But then I survived anyway, and I knew I had to keep going. To stop the killing game properly before anyone else could get hurt. And if that was to become the mastermind everyone feared so much...

Then so be it.
