Danganfans, What is your most controversial opinion regarding Danganronpa lore, characters, etc. ?
(Please remain civil I don’t want to have boxing matches in the notes lmao)
Mine is that Nagito is just not a good character, sure he has a lot of lore and that hair but that’s like all he has and it feels just overdramatic.

Sorry these posts are kinda generic or out of the blue I just wanna make friends 👉👈

the trend of metafiction in video games is here, real, and messing with everyone. (a ramble on a trend in japanese media writing)
Fair warning. Full spoilers for the following games: Doki Doki Literature Club (DDLC), Dangan Ronpa 2 and 3, Nier Automata, Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Series, AI the Somnium Files, Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade.
youtube
"Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never-ending spiral of life and death. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle... and wonder if I'll ever get the chance to kill him."
unfortunately, 2b never gets to kill yoko taro but i bet the man would love to be grinded under her heels. instead, we the players get to blow up the names of the creators of Nier Automata in the credits sequence.
rambling time
youtube
anyway, hi. metafiction is here and i can prove everyone is getting played. for the past... idk 10 odd years there's been a slow simmering of this trend popping up in video games.
i define metafiction as a method where the creators of a media asks the engage to engage with the media in a way that essentially ties the audience's existence to the game's world itself.
it doesn't always mean the player is supposed to play gods in the creator sense, but rather that the players guide the characters we play in video games to a specific outcome through some level of interference. this might be as light as guiding the characters through a series of choices to a good ending, to downright damning as self-inserts or brute forcing them through insane amounts of torture to reach the golden ending, with the game being self-aware throughout.
though the roots of this metafiction writing can be traced to Visual Novels debuting in the early 2000s, JRPGs in particular have been getting really spicy with the way they're taking this.
but before that, i need to highlight a clear extreme example of metafiction. here is Doki Doki Literature Club. a romance horror VN released in 2017. (which is not made by jp devs but is still important in explaining this trend:)
Tumblr media
DDLC is the easiest to understand what i mean by metafiction. this game plays out like a dating sim, with the very rightmost girl, Monika, being a non-romancable wingman at the start. eventually, she becomes self-aware of you, the player, in the game and then proceeds to slowly corrupt, then kill the other 3 girls the game so she becomes the only romance option. Monika knows she's stuck in a game world, and she even reads the name of your steam account. :)
Tumblr media
and in the end, she even talks to you and reveres the player as a god, saying she'll be the perfect girlfriend if it means for the game not to be shut off. there's a lot more going on with DDLC, but the gist of it is, the player is an entity which exists in the context of the game's world in some form.
and this shit. has been happening more often as time goes on. a bunch of examples:
Danganronpa 2 has already been messing with the players way back in 2012. by essentially revealing that the characters were in a simulation all along, and then intentionally messing with the UI in chapter 6 as if the world knows we are there. Danganronpa V3 goes full throttle with this, the whole game turns out to be a spectacle of commenting on how the game exists only because the audience (the players) are there clamoring for more dangan ronpas to consume. which, true, and this was released in 2017.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the main character in Bravely Default (2012), Tiz Arrior begins in the game by nearly getting killed, and at the ending, relinquishes an entity saying 'thanks' before falling unconscious and falling to the ground. this entity was not brought up at any point and is heavily hinted to be the player. and indeed, this is explicitly stated in Bravely Second (2015) the sequel. referred to as a Celestial, this entity possessed him and basically kept him alive. people have tried to analyze this and came to the conclusion that the Celestial being is basically the player. by playing the game, Tiz is forced to live and be our lens into the world of Bravely Default.
(bravely default 2 sucks and i wont talk about it)
Nier Automata (2017) is an action hack and slash game where it's just. insane. a masterpiece. 2 examples are up there already. but in short, Nier Automata seems to be a meta commentary on how they are forced to fight in a never-ending cycle (because we want a game like this). after going through a couple of New Game+ where the playable character goes between 2B to 9S to A2, eventually the player is outright given a choice to delete their save file to break the cycle.
youtube
AI: The Somnium Files (2019) also plays with this outright in its story telling. There are multiple branching paths in the first game, and 2 parallel paths in the sequel, AI: The Somnium Files Nirvana Initiative (2022). in order to achieve the golden ending, the player must go through every single branches and gather information... that somehow can be told to the characters at critical points to help them achieve a good ending. The characters in here interestingly remark how they should have no way of knowing, but also cannot answer how they do.
the extreme version of this lies in the 'Secret' Ending known as Ryuki Diverge, where the player is given a string of numbers after getting the golden ending. Go back to a certain point in the story and tell this number to a certain someone, and the game breaks.
Tumblr media
In Final Fantasy 7 Remake (2020), there are points where Cloud, Aerith, and even possibly Sephiroth are given visions of the original game's future, and react to it. The metafiction player entity here is non-existent, but arguably simply by wanting a remake there are divergences in place to entertain us, the audience.
these are what I know of the games who outright does this. there must be more out there but this would probably good enough to stop.
so the question is now, why?
and the short answer I've got is basically... Asia's religious and cultural beliefs. (is there a better term for this idk...)
there's a lot sloshing about in this bowl, but a lot of it can be attributed to Buddhism. In Buddhism, the world is understood as layers existing on top of each other. the higher layers reside the higher beings who can watch the ones below if they wanted to. mix a bit of taoism and existing belief system in to this, and it starts to look complicated.
basically, the higher beings are mixed with Gods and Deities. one may pray to them and gain their boon, or revere them and gain their favor. and in this understanding, it is possible for anyone of any tier to move up and down through their actions in life, and after death. but these myriad Gods in eastern understanding are not creator gods. unable to sculpt from nothing, these are more akin to spirits than anything else.
a word for these gods could also be devas. residing in their realm and talking to each other, enjoying their time in pleasure and luxury, tied to the whims of their own fate until they too die, and/or move again in their tiers. their lives are incomprehensibly long, so it is said, and thus as good as an immortal. they are said to sometimes whisper in people's ears to guide them.
translating this into video game terms and it starts to get meta. we players are the metafiction entity, the guardian spirits, the devas or deities or gods watching down from our realm being entertained by media. In terms of morality, we are often more amoral and ambiguous than clearly good or bad - our purchases of a video game only says how much we hope or trust this world can entertain us. In terms of time's passage, a month in a video game world is something like 5 minutes to us.
and of course, if there are weak-ass gods like these, out to just watch and enjoy, then there are creator gods. and those Gods are the people 99% of us can't even touch -- the creatives and writers behind each and every game they made.
you will notice that all games i mentioned up there, sans DDLC, are all made by JP devs. metafiction has definitely proven itself to be interesting if done right, and there will absolutely be more to come.
and while all of these sound like mad fan theory, buddhism and taoism aren't just things that exists in books. to the many living now and even for the past 2000 years, these are living beliefs that has shaped many people's understanding of the world. even right now. and it's so pervasive that even if one can't identify it clearly, one can certainly feel its presence. this isnt abrahamic religious understanding at work behind all those games. it's something else, and it is this.
once you understand that cultural thread, the customer is a god is not a hyperbole here. metafiction is not just some one-off trend.
and once you understand this, Fire Emblem Three Houses' buddhism analysis looks less insane, while the rest of the series look even more insane.

Dangan Ronpa also has good OC framework. Like, there's the average protagonist, the female musician, the female athlete, the exuberant almost chuuni male (Hamada 1, Gundham 2, Momota 3), the male troublemaker (KOMAEDA, OUMA), the hidden serial killers (??? is this for (spoilers unmentioned) in 2), more that I can't remember off the top of my head. Plus the trials. The trials are always fun.
Also true!

20 Questions For Fic Writers
not tagged by anyone, i just found it and wanted to do it :3
How many works do you have on ao3?
60
What's your total ao3 word count?
523,261
What fandoms do you write for?
According to Ao3: Zero Escape, Legend of Korra, Gotham, Dangan Ronpa, Daredevil, Skyrim, FNaF, Frozen, Hazbin Hotel, Life is Strange, Logan, MCU, Nope, Saw, Spider-Man, Squid Game, The 100, FATWS, The Jungle Book, The Walking Dead Game, The Wolf Among Us, Uncharted, Animal Crossing, Zom 100, Ace Attorney
Top five fics by kudos:
Out on a Limb
Smoke and Mirrors
GNAWING
Anodynes
Electric Sheep
Do you respond to comments?
For the most part! Sometimes I don't really know what to say in response, but I appreciate every single comment I get. Like, I adore them all.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
(spoilers lmao) It's a tie I think, between Out on a Limb (in which Troy does die, but he saves Clementine and repays his debt, being remembered for the good choice he made in the end) and Electric Sheep (Dio and Luna's fates are left ambiguous, it's unclear if they're alive but at least they're together wherever they are)
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Any of the fluffier fics tbh, but a special mention for Taken by Storm. It's the last fic of the Nope series, and it shows that the gang is recovering from their ordeal and have hope for the future.
Do you get hate on fics?
I mean, I've seen offhand comments on Twitter, but honestly I haven't gotten any hate on Ao3 at least. :)
Do you write smut?
A tiny tiny bit. It's very rare. But we have Stay Classy for a direct smut thing, with like two other fics having references to sex. It's not really something I like to read or write, and have to be in a ver specific mood to write.
Craziest crossover:
I don't write crossovers haha.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Oh god I hope not. Or maybe I do, maybe I want my old deleted (see also: gone forever) fanfiction.net fics to resurface somewhere.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes!!! Electric Sheep is being translated into Polish. Here's the link: Elektryczne Owce :]
Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Nah. Not my thing.
All time favourite ship?
Dio/Luna. Always always always <33
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I... dunno. I have a few that probably won't ever see the light of day, but I'd rather make that decision and leave it at "everything might one day get posted, but I don't know".
What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm pretty good at descriptions, and putting out my best work possible. The latter is a result of my OCD not letting me post something without passing a very strict self-imposed "quality filter," but still. It does show in the final product, stressful as it is to get there.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Sticking with something. Sitting down and writing. Also making more happen in scenes, with more dialogue.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
I've tried to pepper in some Russian in both Out on a Limb and it's just blood under the bridge for the Russian characters, and also some Spanish in Vencido, but it's all Google translated haha.
First fandom you wrote in?
Yu Yu Hakusho :]
Favourite fic you've written?
It'll probably always be Out on a Limb. I worked so hard on it and I reedited it all and made it into a book through a website (I own the only copy so it's not illegal or anything).
I'm tagging anyone who wants to do this!! :]

DanganRonpa CAN be scary, I think in particular, the creepily directed "executions", thanks to their uncanny animation style, can shake one up a bit to watch. Although 70% of the time, they are so silly in :cough: execution it douses the horror of what's happening on screen somewhat. (The first game's first execution is generally ranked as the most violent, and that's because it was a holdover from when the game leaned way more into grunge-horror.) A few of the murders lean on the grisly side, but I think most are more shocking than "gross." And then there's the pink blood!
Once you get past all that, DR is a very excellent story of not just :cough: hope (...I know...) but humanity and what it means to face yourself and hopefully, rise above. The characters are forced into a killing game, and the mastermind's goal usually leans (among other things) on painting a really nasty portrait of people. How "easy" it is to get someone to sink to this level where they'll murder people they're supposed to cooperate with or be friends.
But what you come away from in each case, generally, is sympathy and a sense of loss. For the victim and the murderer. DR is unarguablly EXCELLENT at turning you around on characters. Making you hate someone you loved, love someone you hated, or circle right back around to your first impression!
I adore DR for its depiction of how our best qualities WILL find a way to shine through, even in our worst moments. That even the death of a "jerk" is a tragedy, to someone, somewhere. Everyone (?) has a story in DR. The world isn't "black and white" despite the presence of Monobear.
It's honestly uplifting and powerful. Some of the best "death game" stories are, but DR still holds a position near the top for its creativity, wit, and message. (Minus points for some stuff that's pretty uncomfortable across a variety of spectrums, though your mileage will vary on that. And there are a honestly a FEW weak characters across the franchise, I'll admit.)
DanganRonpa V3 is one of my favorite video games of all time though - beating out DR2, which was itself incredibly good. (Although 2's protagonist, Hajime Hinata, remains my favorite DR character, hands down. Hinata's just one of those impactful characters who changed my life in a good way.)
...Btw, the anime adaptation of 1 is generally fine, but Dangan Ronpa 3 (anime series, different from the V3 game) is awful, and it is every "bad" thing you've ever heard about DR. It is unnecessarily violent and mean, relishes in how much humanity sucks, goes against the general care DR treated its characters with till now, relies on deus ex machina and "gotcha" moments instead of clever murder puzzles (and absolutely wastes the premise of borrowing from one of my favorite analog games :grumble grumble:) and doesn't add anything to the story or mythos you couldn't already have figured out on your own. It has ONE good (?) character in it and <spoilers> they don't make it. To me, it also weakens the earlier games in a way I can't even get into without spoilers, but a certain reveal turned one of my other favorite characters into one of my least favorite. Apologies to anyone who likes it for having to make it through that paragraph but... no. I even rewatched it recently and still... no.
...
...Darn it, all this talk about DanganRonpa made me go back and binge watch all Chapter 2 of DR The After. Grah! That trial is SO good it's unfair that DR The After is only a DR fan game/doujin work! (Mind you, a fan game with amazing production values. The VA knock it out of the park! And the writing...!)
The twists and turns. The interplay. The final reveals!
Literally a work I'm willing to wait the additional 5+ years it will probably take to finish. (Though I'd love if we could get to at least the beginning trial portion of Chapter 3 sometime in 2023...? :fingers crossed:)
While I'm talking to myself about a fan game very few have likely experienced, have a 30 second sketch of Hatami, Super High School Level Good Boy.
Tumblr media
...And yes, I totally ended this post by sketching a character from a DR fan game instead of someone from the mainline series.

Fic Writer Interview.
thanks for the tag @juudaimes-true-form. the @ is. not working. sorry kjnbhvbhj
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
30.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
245,076, apparently.
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Oumasai Oneshots: 1,297
A Fragile Bridge of Trust: 710
Lost Souls: 593
History Maker: 433
Game Over: 417
All of these are old and older. One of them isn't even finished. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--
Please read my newer works o(╥﹏╥)o
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Nearly always yeah. I like the people who read my work and overcome whatever anxiety they might feel to know that I appreciate anything they have to say, and I'm grateful.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I enjoy angst a fair bit but rarely do I ever write something that ends with angst. Obviously, Game Over was expressly written as a bad end to a v3 au i was working on, so it's the easy answer, but there are a few in the oumasai oneshots that I think count, namely Chapter 22, Chapter 24, Chapter 26, and in more ambiguous turf Chapter 19 and Chapter 15. I still like the ambiguous ones a fair bit even now, the first 2 not-ambiguous ones just do not hold up with my interpretation of the text anymore (and also i wrote worse), but 26 is fine. Game Over could have been better, but hey I was a different writer then.
That said I have a lot of stuff I consider heavy on angst, but since they have happy endings I don't think they count for this. But I enjoy that kind of fic the most.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
the ones I haven't finished yet--/gets shot. Nah, probably Le Chasseur et le Démon (The Hunter and the Fiend), because it's a fairytale. It gets a fairytale ending. But I like happy endings so it's pretty hard for me to pick.
7. Do you write crossovers?
No because I tend not to like them and find them obtuse, UNLESS said crossover is between dangan ronpa and Higurashi. No I could not explain why these two things in specific inspired me this much. But also I'm SO right and one day I'll get back to those. But mostly crossover concepts exist in jokes in dms with my friend Cass.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yep lmao. A couple times. It's been pretty lackluster though like solid 2/10 hate comment y'all can do better.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No? Okay so I did orphan a series of fics that had smut in them, but that smut was kind of poetic and deliberately vague, and it's probably the most I plan on committing to in the future for the fics I'm working on rn.
I think people who write pwp or other hard smut are very impressive and have a set of skills I lack, namely....the ability to express physical intimacy in any capacity, including through words! I honestly like. Still struggle with kiss scenes sometimes, but for me all this comes down to my visceral irl discomfort with people existing within 3 feet of me, nevermind touching me.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I sure the fuck hope not.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't remember if this happened with a fic, but iirc I think someone translated that long ass DR meta I wrote about Ouma and Komaeda into...Russian? I don't remember very well. Also that meta is being majorly overhauled spoilers I guess.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not for fic no. All my fic belong solely to me, as do my original works, and its what I prefer. I've done volunteer writing on other people's original projects however, even right now. @clusterfuck-au is something I work on with my friend Wren, but I do all the writing, and they do art stuff, so its not the same lmao.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Idk how I'm supposed to have one of these when I can't really pick a fandom over a fandom. So I'll just name some fandoms I like, and the ship I currently like the most for it.
Ace Attorney: narumitsu (there are a couple close runner ups tho)
Dangan Ronpa: komahina
AITSF: ryudate
Higurashi: keimii
Spy x Family: Twiyor
There are other I fandoms, and other ships, but it'd take forever so take these.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I HAVE SO FUCKING MANY MY GUY, AND I REALLY WANT TO FINISH THEM, BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN IF EVER I'LL GET TO EM. HERE WE GO. I will not be including the WIP I'm working on right now! That's happening! fuck you @ self
The Long Way 'Round: This is supposed to be an extremely long narumitsu Ace fanfic about their relationship through the years from their time together in childhood to after Apollo Justice. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about their relationship, its ups and downs, and the character development they undergo together and seperately. The fic would not feature anything actually shown in canon, and doesn't include DD or SoJ because I hate them and think they're bad and disowned them from canon. This fic is next on my list of things to work on.
Exoneration AU and the LCC rewrite: aus that only makes sense to anyone who has ever read the visual novel Chaos;Child and is in fandom (maybe 100 people) and ALSO is gay enough to ship Takuru, the main character of a bishoujo game, with Shinji (his token best friend). Also has to be gay enough to ship the girls together. also has to be based enough to think Kawahara deserved better and are mad about the writer's gaslighting. I'm not going to explain the plot of these any further; y'all aint gonna get it.
The Cries of Hope's Peak Academy: AKA, clusterfuck AU. What if I took the higurashi cast and put them in a pre-despair dangan ronpa setting (also the v3 kids are here too). Also. What if I shipped. Mion with Keiichi, Hinata, and Ikusaba, Keiichi with Ouma, Kamukura and Saihara, Ouma with Kamukura and Saihara, Kamukura with Komaeda, Komaeda with Hinata, and Hinata with Saihara. This is the titular clusterfuck; they are a polycule in progress. Its not even the only ship. The plot though is inspired by all that I wished Dangan Ronpa 3: Despair Arc was, with Enoshima taking advantage of vulnerable people via manipulation and HPA's inherent powderkeg, but with higurashi's thematic core.
Higurashi: When They Cry - Uso (Lies) and what would be its answer arc counterpart I haven't named yet: The other crossover fic. This one is just. What if I yeeted Ouma into the Higurashi setting like it was where he belonged. What would happen. It's Higurashi, so it borrows a lot from its overarching story and arc ideas, but every arc would be a unique twist based on the existence of a new guy in there! I still like this a lot. I still think of every character in dangan ronpa, Ouma feels the most like the one who would belong in Higurashi, and stands the most to gain from it.
The Klav/Seb enemies to lovers fic: it's exactly what it sounds like. I just think they have a lot in common but their themis years would absolutely be filled with PETTY beef because seb is a nepotism baby which pisses Klav off, and seb doesn't know he's a nepotism baby so he doesn't understand what the fuck his problem is. Also Apollo is there later. Klavier has 2 hands.
Pewter in a timeloop for aitsf and he gets a buddy cop dynamic with Iris on his looping quest to save renju. yeah that. that's the jist. also includes REHABILITATING THE OKIURA HOUSEHOLD AAAAAAA
I have some oneshots I haven't written yet, but those don't count. If you're aware of a long fic/series I was working on that isn't listed here....sorry but I think I've grown past those ideas.
I have two WIPs that are original, but I still work on those. They're both visual novel concepts I came up with, and they both mean everything in the world to me.
15. What are your writing strengths?
Fanfic specific strengths, I'm great at being in character. Translated more broadly, strong dialogue and internal narration coupled with actions and behaviors that reflect their emotional core.
I think my narration is at its best when it's just sitting inside some messy bitch's head and living out their entire thought process, and I think my background in poetry really adds to that. I like using line breaks and font sizes/alignments/effects to express intensity or disarray, etc. I do that for dialogue too. Also I'm pretty fucking funny in both places when I want to be. I think it adds to the charm, and I think my authorial voice adds to that.
Also tbh I'm so good at structuring and pacing frankly I think I'm a natural at it. I think my scenes are as long as they need to be, my stories hit every necessary beat, every scene and story ends and begins on the correct note, and readers learn things when they need to. Pacing and structure is not really something people think a lot about when they get asked this question, but I think it's the most important element to any story. If your pacing, your narrative structure is broken, no amount of metaphor and poetic description can save you.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
God forbid I have to describe a physical thing. Forget it. Not actions per se (although sometimes yeah those too, but more like clothes, settings, sounds, smells, tastes--that's a real struggle. I always think its the weakest thing I have to offer, and a lot of my writing process is desperately trying to put the image in my brain into words that make sense and sound good. Definitely the biggest weakness I have no fucking contest holy shit.
Other smaller struggles is a tendency to overuse words like just/maybe/really/still/etc; the problem with having a strong voice is that some of the quirks from my way of TALKING don't actually add anything to narration or the dialogue, so I've been training myself to cut back and cut things out. It can lead to things being repetitive.
Also, while I believe I have a lot of killer ideas that slap 10/10, and I'm a very creative person, the ADHD makes it hard to keep working on ideas even when I love them. The smallest thing stumping me, or boring me, or just kind of draining my sole, can get me not writing for weeks. I guess this is an ADHD problem, but it affects writing, my one true love, and in some ways that makes it the real biggest issue.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I think it's fine depending on how you do it. If you put a note at the end translating all the lines in other languages, or fit the translation smoothly within the narrative, I think that's completely legal.
With that said, I do kinda cringe when instead of writing Japanese someone types out just. romaji. I get that you want your audience to know how to read it, but they're likely not to know what it means anyway even IN romaji, so just commit. Go for authenticity. You can put the pronunciation in your footnotes too.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Pokemon in my spiral notebook in 5th grade. It's still pokemon online cause I made an illegal ffn account and moved it there at age 11. You can't read it; I literally don't even remember what the account was.
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
Mmm....I guess spy x family? I haven't written full fic for it yet, and it'd be nice to. The list of ships is longer, and I'm not going to bother with that, but needless to say I have a lot of passions lmao.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
The ryudate fic I'm revising right the fuck now. No, okay, that's illegal, it doesn't exist in full yet, although you can read its revised first chapter here <3. That said, I find this decision kind of hard, so I'll give you a few that I've finished: Yours, Le Chasseur et le Démon (The Hunter and the Fiend), A Rational Man, The "Death" of Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and a fic for a Pandora Hearts zine that hasn't come out yet!
Um. I will tag. @generalherasyndulla, @queenshroorn, and anyone else who reads this whole thing and considers themselves a writer.

Panda’s full rewrite of DR1 with explanation because she has nothing better to do before DND:
Put under spoilers because it’s long + dangan ronpa cringe
1. Sayaka is the actual protag, but Naegi is the bait and switch death protag instead of Kaede.
- (From what we’ve been told), Sayaka is “supposed” to be a critique twist of how oversaturated mystery series were with a guy protag and a sweet innocent assistant girl. The problem is jumping immediately to “kill the girl character as a twist instead!” always blows chunks. (Also if she still planned to kill someone, that would be an interesting “no one trusts you” emotional dynamic)
2. Fuck ALL of chapter 2. Chihiro lives. She’s trans. Fukawa is a true crime enthusiast. Also trans. Togami’s the killer. Not trans.
-Was originally the worst chapter in the entire series before DRV3. Transphobic, pluralphobic, letting a spoiled rich kid get away with desecrating a body, and it barely makes any sense. It sucks across the board just. EW! Change all of it!
3. Maybe actually do something with Ishimaru freaking out so badly he basically gets an introject of his dead friend?
-What’s the point of giving him a radical design and personality change if he just. Dies the same chapter? There’s no story there. This is a series about extreme grief, I’d like to see more emphasis on characters attempting to cope with what’s happening.
4. Maybe Hagakure should actually... have a presence?
-I get the point of a more comic relief character, but uh... by the end of the game the cast is so slimmed down there’s less of a point to having one? A character designed to defuse a situation between 12 characters becomes a little too effective when it’s, like, 5 or 6.
5. Make Monokuma actually a robot.
-There should be more emphasis on the fact that Monokuma is meant to be representative of extreme capital punishment and enforcement, and it’s tie in to systematically forcing people to commit crimes. (Think about how Naegi said it wasn’t the first two people’s faults that they killed each other, but Monokuma’s for putting them in that situation. That should be the vibe the whole game.) Making him a literal AI makes it easier to connect as a literal system without lived morals applied to it. And it makes it harder to blame a single person, like...
6. Basically completely overhaul Junko Enoshima as a character, and don’t make her take the individualistic blame for a completely societal structural failing
-As she stands now, Junko is a character who’s basically blamed for the destruction of the entire world “because she’s mentally ill enough”. She swaps personalities every couple of lines. She says she doesn’t feel anything but “despair”. “Demonization” is putting it lightly. And the thing is: We don’t even want to get rid of her depression, her plurality, etc. etc. etc., we just think it’s counterproductive to put all the blame on a single person. Her sister’s a child soldier for god’s sake, the world’s already plenty messed up before she showed up! She doesn’t even have to be good, just acknowledge she’s probably just a teen coping incredibly poorly with the world ending.
