Got a Spicy One for ya today lads. How about some sex pollen bowuigi?
(not explicit but I'm still putting it under a cut so nobody has to see it if they don't want)
It's one of the gang's occasional reluctant team-ups, and Bowser and Luigi are split off the rest of the group and have to fight a big flower monster neither of them has heard of before. Afterward they both suddenly find themselves really hot and bothered, and since there's nothing else that would have gotten them going they both assume they're attracted to each other. Having sex in a floral glade just seems like a really good idea at the moment!
Afterward, when they go to find somewhere to wash up, Bowser notices how absolutely covered in pollen they are, and Luigi trips over a broken signpost. He finds the sign covered in leaves a little way away, and it warns travelers to stay away from the flower glade and avoid other people if you've been exposed. Uh-oh.
They both agree it was just a horrible accident and they should never speak of it again. No hard feelings, but also, take this to your grave.
Time passes.
Neither of them can stop thinking about it. Despite the awkwardness of doing it in a forest, the sex was really really good, and Luigi can't stop wondering if it was the pollen making it more intense? Or if he's more kinky than he thought? Or if Bowser's actually a good lover? The only way to find out would be to try it again, and Bowser would never go for that... right?
Meanwhile Bowser hasn't gotten laid in so long that it's gone from dry spell to drought to climate crisis, and he can't stop thinking about it because oh god he'd almost forgotten how it felt to hold somebody like that. To have somebody look at you like they WANT you. He feels like he's losing his mind but he almost (almost) doesn't care about how pathetic he'd look if he can just have that again.
The next time they run into each other one of them (I can't decide which. Maybe both?) brings up the idea of... maybe... in a casual way... sort of... doing that again? Onlyifyoureintoitofcourse.
And of course the other one IS, so they slip off to find somewhere to give it a go. Turns out the answer to Luigi's question was D. All Of The Above, but even without the pollen intensifying things it's still pretty dang good. He doesn't have to be convinced too hard when Bowser suggests Luigi could come over whenever he's in the mood. Purely as a casual thing. Obviously neither of them wants a relationship.
It goes on like that for a little while, although pretty soon Bowser starts making more accommodations for Luigi. It's an inconvenient trip, so he arranges for one of those painting portals. And if Luigi can come over whenever he wants, it just makes sense for him to have his own room in the castle. And since now it's a breeze to go back and forth, Luigi doesn't worry too much about getting home and just hangs around more often.
They get used to each other's company in more than just sexual situations. They start to actually like each other.
Though they both want to keep it a secret (Bowser doesn't want Peach to think he's been "unfaithful," and Luigi doesn't want his brother and friends to think he's a traitor) it's not like Luigi can just hide in his room all the time. Eventually it's kind of unspoken knowledge that Luigi is Bowser's Official Mistress. Not a consort or a concubine because that would be too official. Just the person that everyone knows he's sleeping with and should be treated relatively politely because of it.
And that's all I've got. Two idiots who apparently haven't seen enough movies to realize somebody always catches feelings, and a whole castle full of loose lipped time bombs who are bound to let something slip eventually. Which will go off first!?

Can i request the Mafia fish with Introvert!reader who’s rarely interact with people and they found out that they’re reader’s muse for painting art bcus all reader can think about is them HSSBSJA
I CRAVE FLUFF TO SLEEP PEACEFULLY
Mafia fish it is!! hehehe
GN! Reader
Floyd
He's quite scary to you, since he's so extroverted, and he's so engergetic, while you're just a silent, no energy person. He likes to sqeeze you quite often, so often you've begun to recognize his footsteps. Though he may be scary, you can't seem to get him off your mind, so... you make him your little guinea pig. He gets to sqeeze you? You get to use him as an art guinea pig, fair is fair, after all. Of course, you weren't gonna announce to him that he's your art guinea pig, who knows what he'd do to you...
"Whatcha drawing shrimpy-chan?" He suddenly said from behind you. He had entered your art room without you noticing, and now you've got yourself in a sticky situation, looking at him with a half shocked, half terrified look on your face. He laughs at you.
"Awww shrimpy! don't be scared! I just wanna see! Is that me?" he asks, you turn away and slowly nod, and he sqeezes you as if it were his last day on earth.
"Awwww! Shrimpy!!! You drew meeeee!" he laughs, you cough from how he's sqeezing you, and he puts you down.
You stay silent for a moment, before silently speaking, "W-well... you get to sqeeze me all the time, so.... its only fair if I get to use you as my art guinea pig in exchange..." He laughs.
"Hahahaha! Shrimpy is so funny!" he smiles with his sharp teeth, "Can I watch you draw??" He asks, you nod slowly, making him jump slightly in happiness, "yaaaay!"
Jade
Like Floyd, he's also scary to you, he's not the type of person you'd wanna get in the bad side of, though most of the time you avoid him, you do see him in the halls once in a while, and when you do, he gives you a smile that looks nice, but probably has some sinister plan underneath that has you involved. even though you've only seen him those few times, and how scary he is, you can't seem to get him out of your head, so you tend to draw him often, very regular, gentlemanly poses, nothing strange.
"an exquisite painting of me you've done, darling." you hear his voice linger behind you, making you jump, with a slight "eep!" escaping your mouth, he chuckles softly
"No need to be afraid... I quite like it." he says, smiling. you silently ask "Really?" he chuckles again.
"but of course, never had I seen someone as talented in art as you... This is because I was on your mind, yes?" he asked, dang... he caught you red handed.
Azul
Ah, yes, Azul Ashengrotto. Despite his powerful reputation as the owner of Monstro Lounge and dormleader of Octavinelle, you find him quite pretty, you two have some of the same classes together, and sometimes you can't help but secretly stare at him, you sometimes have a tendancy to draw him in your sketchbooks, in fact, 50% of your most recent sketchbook is filled with drawings of him, little notes on the drawings like "Pretty..." or "He's very cool..."
Though you haven't interacted often, he seems knows you quite well, which scares you, because, well... What if he finds your sketchbook? What will he say about all the drawings of him that are there? Would he think you're creepy? It's something you panic about almost everyday.
Your favorite place to draw is in the bontanical garden, because its just so pretty there... you sigh, as even when Azul isn't in seeing distance, you still can't seem to get him out of your head, his eyes, glasses, face, hair, personality... its all stuck in there like it was superglued in there, so you draw him. You don't draw anything strange, of course, you only draw him normally, sometimes doing full body, sometimes doing bust-up drawings... and you even draw little chibis too.
"How cute..." you hear a familiar voice behind you, causing you to jump, immediately holding your sketchbook in your arms and turning to see the person behind you. and of course... It was none other than the person you were just drawing, Azul Ashemgrotto. You enter a state of panic, 'what's he gonna say??? What do I do????'
He laughs lightly, "No need to panic, I don't bite." he says, "I simply came to admire your art, the drawings you do of me are always quite amazing."
And that didn't help calm down your panic, you ushered a small "Y-you saw them?" with a stuttered, quite and soft voice, clearly shaking.
He smiles, "Yes, I did, but I really like your drawings, I'm... actually flattered you think I'm so pretty..." he says, his face turning a bit red from blush, and his voice going softer, as you your eyes, as you stop panicing, you ask him softly "so you... don't find it weird...?"
"Of course not... It... actually makes me quite happy... But please don't tell Floyd and Jade or anyone I said that! They'd tease me mercilessly..." he said as he sighed, you chuckle a bit.
"Hehehe... I won't... And... I'm... glad you like my drawings..." you say quietly with a smile.

IWTV Ep3 Musings - Claudia & Louis (Spoilers)
I'm still teary & choked up while typing this. SUPER emotional episode. It's incredible how much they packed into one ep, too! But the second half of the ep was BY FAR the most emotionally impactful IMO. Jacob's acting is just WAY too good; he had me choking up something fierce.
Louis taking pictures of his food for no effing reason like all the social media girlies do; I love it.
Louis STILL tryna be Claudia's knight in vengeful black. U_U But just like before when he tried to save her from Lestat, he can't save her from Bruce or the Theatre or even his own eff-ups. DANG. 😔
YES YOU DO. If you wanna keep pestering her about trauma she doesn't want to think/speak about, then be prepared for the consequences.
AMC, you GOTTA kill Bruce on-screen for us, either in QotD during all the Burnings, or during the PL trilogy (Killer's death was GNARLY).
LOOK AT MY DAUGHTER ALMOST CRYING RIGHT THERE. God's strongest soldier, she's suffered more than Christ, JUSTICE FOR CLAUDIA. All rapists deserve the death penalty, IDGAF.
Understatement of the century.
I CACKLED at that literal DEMON TIMING. Armand was already AT the door while y'all were concocting your lies! Then he just strolls on in, uninvited! 😭
BULLSH!TE. Not that it matters, since vamps have SUPER-HEARING and can READ MINDS, you morons! Pack your bags and go back to America RIGHT NOW. 💀💀💀
Louis, beloved, bless your heart, but if you don't take your garbage attempts at lying back to NOLA and stop playing with this ANCIENT immortal dressed in all white like the effing BOSS PIMP you USED to be.....
Alpha DADDY Maitre Armand Sir, I take back every bottom Uke Omega joke I ever said about you~! 😍
Yeah, about all that.... 😬
Aaaaannnnnd THIS is where you effed up, Claudia.
And Armand heard the WHOLE THING. 😭
Look at her FACE. 😭😭😭😭
They KNEW she hated being treated as a child, and they KNEW her time was numbered cuz she lied about breaking their Great Laws, so they DELIBERATELY made the "Baby LouLou" role to humiliate her, and EXPLOITED her image to bring in extra revenue (how many BLACK actresses did they ever have in their coven/stage? ZERO); all while KNOWING they were gonna kill her and Louis ASAP.
youtube
I hate this Theatre coven with ever fibre of my being, Maitre.
Excellent point, Louis. Cuz I noticed in Ep2 that their apartment is kind of crappy--I assumed it was cheap & low class cuz of the tenants all being college students & sex workers, and I noticed a bunch of chipped paint everywhere; on the doors & walls.
They're slumming it in a studio, sleeping in the living room, as neither has their own room & she has to use a Murphy Bed. Major step below 1132; the exact opposite of how book!Claudia & Lou lived in Parisian opulence--highlighting my point that AMC!Claudia got NOTHING out out being a vampire.
But it's also pointing out how Louis covers all the cracks--in his MIND, in the lies he tells himself, just to live with the glaring problems he desperately wants to cover up & deny.
I'm finna yeet myself out the nearest window.
This is SO bizarre, cuz in this version Lou KNOWS Lestat's not really dead! In the book Lou set him on FIRE. So ofc he'd think Les was really dead. But here it makes no sense why he's carrying all this guilt!
Armand knew Lou & Claudia LIED, sure--but he SHOULD know Lestat's still ALIVE--he's probably chained up in the Theatre basement in one of those friggin "wet room burial vaults!"
THANK YOU.
The guilt is out of control. Louis, if Les couldn't tell you loved him after ALL OF THAT, then he's a effing fool who neither understands nor deserves you. Now go chop his d**k off!
Is that what you tell yourself when DreamStat's in bed with you every night? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I haven't seen mental trauma treated so well in Horror media since Senua's Sacrifice; this is incredible. 👏
Lou, give yourself a bit more credit--you're doing the best you can! :( Even if your best is an entire travesty. U_U
NOBODY TALK TO ME!
Just when I thought she was having a breakthrough, she doubles down on thinking Lestat lied to them about Europe being terrible. 🤦
(The way Lou clutches his pearls like he's having a heart attack--STOP it, ma'am~! 👌) And YES, you should've told her that you folded and spilled the beans to Armand and that she was walking into a trap, WTF!?! 😡
Jacob, your GirlDad is showing; PLEASE have mercy on us! 😭
EMMYS. 👏 GRAMMYS. 👏 OSCARS. 👏 TONYS. 👏

CPC CHAPTER 167
YO PROPS TO WITCH!!!
Hm, I wonder how Leelathae writes in her diary? I mean, does she write them in just dialogue, or narrative, or what? Either she is writes in dialogue, or she described the witch pretty well for Gwen to recognize who the witch is.
I mean, I didn't expect these ingredients, but sure. Does this imply there's a cemetery near The Pastel Kingdom? Cause Leelathae isn't allowed to be far from home, right? And I doubt she would ask someone to get dirt from cemetery for her...
I wonder what Leelathae plan was? Cause she didn't get the chance to execute it since her portrait was stolen by Leland. Or maybe she did execute it while in the Plaid Kingdom?
I agree with the witch so much. The painters fr did Leelathae dirty 💀
THE WITCH WASN'T LYING. SHE DOES LOOK COOL AF. LIKE. BRO?? HOW AM I NOT SUPPOSED TO FALL IN LOVE.
Huh. How does the ingredient turn into a paint-like liquid?? None of the ingredients are liquid based. Maybe the dirt?
This whole spell thing is sick man. It's so dang cool!! I wonder if anyone notices Leelathae sparkling?? I mean, one of the maids has got to notice right?
Also I've never knew there's tea inside snickerdoodles (chai is tea, right?). Well, it's not like I've ever tried snickerdoodles, but last time I read the recipe, I don't remember tea being in the recipe. But that was years ago so it might just be my memory.
Well, the mystery of the portrait is finally solved! And yet there's another mystery.. what writing did Leelathae put behind her portrait? Yes, the diary is one of them, but there are other things too. Like those brown and green papers. I'm guessing it's a message toward her kids?
Ohh, that's why!! Leelathae was glowy because of the spell!
BRUH SO WAS IT LIKE, A MISUNDERSTANDING THIS WHOLE TIME?? I did kinda predict it in my really old post, but I was joking T_T
Something's kinda bothering me about what Leelathae said in her 3rd wish. Why is she only talking about her daughters? What about Jamie? Or is there a hidden meaning that I am not getting here? If someone would enlighten me, that would be nice.
Aw. It's actually pretty sweet when you think about how they didn't even know how to speak to each other at first, but they still fell in love with each other <3
Oh. Oohhh....okay. This doesn't justify what Leland is doing right now, but it sure give a big reason for it. Yikes. Damn. That must've hurt.
Okay okay, let me just remember the past episodes to realize all the causes here.
Leland's parents died due to tragic carriage accident (didn't a carriage accident happen more than once? Tho I can't remember to who besides Leland's parents)
His best friend, Jack, didn't arrive to Leland's parents' funeral, which is the moment he needed him the most (not Jack's fault though, since he was literally stranded in an island)
Leland obviously has a little crush on Jack, which is why it hurts him when he found out Jack brought Leelathae to Pastel Kingdom (again, not Jack's fault). I think this is where he jealousy starts, the point where Leland thinks he has to be better at every love things than Jack.
He overheard Jack saying he didn't need him, which is probably the nail in the coffin for Leland. I mean that monologue Leland has? That's kinda internal mental breakdown right there. (I gotta say, this scenario is kindaaa similar to Gwen overhearing Frederick calls her ugly. I wouldn't say it's the exact same thing of course. It's just the overhearing that makes it similar)
So! Looking at these 4 reasons, it is highly likely that Leland has some problems (no shit sherlock). HEAR ME OUT. I don't know what it is yet. I was thinking of abandonment issues, but I have yet to read much about it, so i'm not sure yet.
HAH! Glad Leelathae decided to haunt his dreams tho!
OH SHIT OH SHIT. NAH LELAND NAHHHH. HE BETTER NOT. ....well at the time i'm writing this the next episode is already out so.. guess we're gonna find out...IN THE NEXT REVIEW!!
Yeah I haven't read the episode yet lol. I bet it's gonna be chaotic though.
That's it for now, until next time.
Mono out! (But still in to hear your thoughts)

MONTHLY MEDIA: September 2024
……….FILM……….
Army of Darkness (1992) Having now seen the original trilogy, it baffles me that all of the Evil Dead reboots exclusively lean into horror. Two thirds of the these movies are practically Saturday-morning cartoons! I love everything about this, from the humour to the puppetry to the insane haircuts.
Mad Monster Party? (1967) This is the first feature-length Rankin-Bass production that I've seen and you can tell the animators were invested in this one. 80% of the film is visual gag it's all so much fun. Zero complaints though I am a sucker for anything that lumps a bunch of public domain monsters together.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) While I wish they'd gone with the original sequel premise (Beetlejuice goes to Hawaii), this is still a solid comeback. Does it all work? No. But it is a great pitch for a Beetlejuice limited series.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) Loved the original, loved this even more.
……….TELEVISION……….
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Episode 1.21 to 1.22) Okay didn't watch much of this in September but it's taken a nosedive into a pool of existential dread. I mean it was always there but it feels like the end is going to be a battle with conflicting ideologies instead of the Angels. Wild stuff.
……….YOUTUBE……….
The Sustained Two-Shot by Every Frame a Painting It's been years since EFAP posted a video and I implore you to check out their back catalog of really insightful film analysis. If you like this video, you'll like the others. VIDEO
The Question No One Asks Shigeru Miyamoto by Good Blood Great insight into game philosophy and design, as well as a unique lens with which to explore the Zelda series of games. VIDEO
AB Dictionary by Allison Bornstein For those who may not know, I have a passion...for fashion! I keep going back to a few core resources for inspiration and guidance and Allison Bornstein's youtube channel is one of them. She leans towards women's wardrobes, but this introduction to her approach is fairly universal (leaning towards personal style vs "wear this not that".) VIDEO
……….READING……….
Murder at Hazelmoor by Agatha Christie (Complete) Really digging into Christie's work has given me some more perspective on which sorts of mysteries I connect. This one, which spends some time with the suspects, but not as much as in other books, made it much harder to keep track of everyone. But dang if the endings don't deliver so much satisfaction that I can't help but finishing it and thinking "Yeah! That was good."
The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (Complete) The Discworld series of novels are always great but sometimes one just really clicks for me. Loved the monsterverse setting, loved the politics, loved it all. I'm not sure I'd recommend this as a good entrypoint but if you've read any of the Discworld books featuring the Watch and you haven't read The Fifth Elephant, definitely check it out.
Richard Stark's Parker: Slayground by Donald E Westlake and Darwyn Cooke (Complete) Darwyn Cooke's adaptation are always so stylish I always feel a little sad reading it, knowing it's his final rework of the Parker series. And such a gut punch at the end when it says Parker will return. Darwyn Cooke has been such an inspiration for me and his work is incredible; please check out this series or the DC: The New Frontier comics OR his run on Catwoman OR his contributions to Spider-Man's Tangled Web.
FF Volume 1: Fantastic Faux and FF: Volume 2: Family Freakout by Matt Fraction, Lee Allred, Michael Allred, Laura Allred, Joe Quinones, and many more (Complete) I loved Matt Fraction's work on Hawkeye and Michael and Laura Allred's work on Silver Surfer so I was excited for this pairing...but it didn't really click. The writing felt surprisingly dated and even across the two volumes I felt like I was missing a lot of context. I wish I could recommend it but there are better stories from these creatives and about these characters.
……….AUDIO……….
Flight b741 by King GIzzard & The LIzard Wizard (2024) The beauty of King Gizzard's prolific output is that they have the freedom to experiment. Sometimes I don't connect with what they're doing, and sometimes they put out an album like this. Into it.
Shingangumi by Ginger Root (2024) The vibes are right on the mark but the majority of the album just kinda washes over you. Some of Ginger Root's singles are really catchy and it's a shame I haven't connected with any individual tracks just yet.
……….GAMING……….
Wonderland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) With the book's upcoming release, our Tuesday group decided to take a break from Oz and Neverland and do a few dungeon delves. It was a whirlwind that included a character death and exploring a secret secondary realm! If you want to read the campaign diary then it's over here!
And that's it. See you in October!

Billie Needs Penny's Advice
Penny was tending her garden when she ended up with an unexpected visitor. It wasn't out of the ordinary for Ricky or B to show up at her house anymore. Even Rosie walked over on the occasional night.
But Billie was a new one.
"Come in, kiddo," Penny said. "It's just started to rain anyways. Tell me what's on your mind."
Billie followed her into her new house and looked around. "Dang, Ms. Harper, the new digs is sweet."
"Oh yeah, I guess you haven't been here yet."
"Your paintings are so cool, I'm always telling Roz that you could be just as big as Blair."
Penny laughed. "No, no, not that big. Blair was inspired. I'm just dabbling."
"Ms. Harper, I have a problem," Billie said.
"I am apparently the place people are coming to these days for that. What's the problem?"
"I think I'm in love."
"This is a silly problem."
"No it's not!" Billie gave Penny a stern glare. "Listen, I love being single. I love having Mr. Monday and Mr. Wednesday being different men. I love that one pays for my hair and another takes me shopping and a third buys my nails. But, I keep wanting to wake up with Deangelo. Every time."
"Okay, what's the problem?"
"I can't be in love and be dating seven other men, Ms. Harper!"
"Literally why not?" When Billie didn't respond, Penny continued. "Look, as long as all parties are transparent and open, there's no reason why you can't make this work, kid. How does lover man feel about it?"
"He's fine with me dating other people."
"Okay, so why not ask him if you guys could be more serious while also staying open? Open relationships work for some people. Poly systems work for some people. Love doesn't have to mean monogamy. Love isn't a pie, you don't have a set amount of it."
Ooh, a pie sounds really good, though... Penny thought to herself.
"I...didn't think about that. I don't know that my parents would love that."
Penny shrugged. "Not their life. Not their story. Not their decision."
Penny gifted Billie a recent painting she'd done. Billie loved it.
"I'm going to think on what you said, Ms. Harper," Billie said. "I really appreciate it. You should do an advice column for The Harper Herald."
Penny laughed. "Only if Rosie asks, I'm not stepping on her toes with this."
After Billie left, Penny indeed made a pie which she enjoyed with a J.

Today I played in an OPR doubles tournament. So much fun. A huge variety of opponents I'd never played before, Guard, Space Marines, more Chaos, Mechanicus, even more chaos, and Tau.
My craftworld, Ra Shelwe, formed a tenuous alliance with a faction of Nurgle followers that had some sympathy toward Eldar due to a shared desire to aid the Eldar god, Isha. (Though perhaps we had different ideas of what that aid would really be). The Guardians of Isha embarked to... Something? I'll come up with a lore mission overall sometime.
We won all 3 of our games, "oddest duo" (lore-wise), and even tied for "best painted", as voted by the other participants.
I had an amazing time, this is a dang good game. <3
More images and short battle reports under the cut.
First game, we faced off against some guard and butter marines. A pair of sacrificial zones would attack units inside them, and award points based on toughness taken. My farseer performed some psychic rituals to purify the land (secondary objective VP). Wave serpent tried to shoot down a plane, failed. My wraithlord had its debut game! (I haven't shown off the photos of that one yet). Wraithblades escorting my farseer wiped out 2 whole units in a couple of charges.
We took the win, I don't want to face a great unclean one ever.
Second game saw us fighting for control over 5 points with another chaos faction and the tech-obsessed Mechanicus. My guardians bravely held one of our deployment points. War walker Lorde's over the landscape, picking off medium models here and there. The great old one did not last through the first turn. Knights are scary. I need a wraith knight.
We squeezed out a win, but mostly due to time constraints. If it had gone to the 4th turn, we may have struggled to maintain the lead.
3rd game and an encroaching storm threatened to wipe the surface clean, while only a single point allowed the opportunity to leave the planet. Our enemies, another chaos faction and some sadly misled tau, sought to hinder our escape. The unclean one again showed its menace in taking out the enemy riptide during the first activation of the game. I'm so glad it's on my side. One broadside put up an impressive fight, surviving 2 charges and a gun volley, before finally being taken down by my wraithblade's charge. The storm forced us all in close and fast, and a target rich environment made it difficult for both sides to prioritise targets. But Ra Shelwe was victorious and escaped. I guess a few of the nurgle marines did too.
We took the win, and most of our models survived to escape. So many points. XD Too many points. It was great.
Overall, I had a fantastic time. The size of the games were great, 2k per army, for a total 4k per side, or 8k on the table. Losing a full unit in the first couple activations felt fine, cause you have so many remaining.
There were a bunch of people there I didn't get to play, but being able to play against 6 new people in just 3 games, and form new connections with club members. So good. I don't think I can get away with calling myself a newbie anymore. XD

Snip Snip
Well, that's done. Just after noon I drove to Glam Salon in Easton (I think "glam" and Easton cancel each other out) and got rid of a lot of hair. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. As far as my hair is concerned, that's a win. My appointment was for a cut and highlights on the crown to lighten it up a bit and allow my white to grow in. That's always ridiculously expensive, and quite frankly, I don't see a big difference. First she chopped off a ton of hair, then painted in the highlights and wrapped me in foil. By this time I was questioning my choices.
I love that this pic is a little out of focus because it makes me look like I don't have a bunch of wrinkles. Spoiler alert: I do. Anyway, the end result is fine, and I'll probably keep my hair short and eschew any color. Easier and cheaper, two of my favorite things. I took a selfie before I left for my appointment. I went in with frizz, floppy layers, and a stripe of white roots. The middle shot was taken when i got home. The profile after I had changed into jammies and rubbed my eyes. Don't judge me.
I love the woman who cuts my hair and she is the one who kept me from going even shorter. She told me to try this for a while and see how I feel. She's probably right. I feel that this is a crone-worthy cut and I can live with it. So there are the photos I promised, don't expect to see my mug on this blog again any time soon. Moving on to more important matters - I haven't applied a single swipe of paint to that gorgeous desk/cupboard set. It's just too dang hot. We are still under all sorts of heat advisories, I think our high today was 97 with a "real feel" of 100-something. Totally unnecessary. The humidity is high and absolutely draining. I dragged the hose around and watered a few things and filled the bird bath, and just that little bit of activity felt like swimming in hot water in a wool sweater. Gross. Since I don't have a deadline for painting that piece I do believe I'll wait until the garage doesn't feel like a sauna. That might be a while. Because it's hot and I'm rattling around the house alone, I am not cooking. I've been polishing off dibs and dabs of leftovers in the frig - a bit of rotisserie chicken, a little tuna on crackers, fruits and veggies, I'm like one of those sucker fish that cleans your aquarium. I don't mind it. Keeps the house cool and my tummy full. Win-win. I think we should declare a moratorium on cooking until the high temp for the day is 75. Nothing that takes longer than microwave popcorn allowed.
That's enough from me today. The sun is sinking toward the horizon and the sky is a hazy lavender. That's my cue to roll the trash can to the curb and call it a night. In an hour I'll probably be reading in bed, surrounded by cats. Look at that, another win!
I'll leave you here and try to think of something to write about tomorrow. Perhaps the fact that I refuse to give up on my stunted gardens and have decided that I'll try pumpkins again. Ever the optimist, a glutton for punishment, and a firm believer since 1963.
I'm going to pop seeds into the front bed as well as the garden on the side of the house. I used to grow lovely pumpkins in TN, I refuse to believe that my pumpkin farming days are over. Now is the time to plant for a Halloween harvest. Send me some good vibes, light a candle, rub some beads, sacrifice a chocolate bar, whatever it takes. I'm full of hope. I'll meet you back here tomorrow. Until then, stay safe, stay well, keep COOL.
XOXO, Nancy

Stuff From 2023!
List of things of note I experienced in 2023! A few things didn't technically release in 2023, I'm sure, but yea. Will contain my 'Top 10 Games I Played in 2023' as well.
Firstly, something I played a lot of this year in bursts but doesn't quite crack my Top 10 is Vampire Survivors. Very addicting, did some very fun goofy shit that had me laughing and engaged in a lizard brain way. Appreciated the many Castlevania references and jokes, too.
A couple of games I played every weekend for a few hours across many weeks this year were Project Zomboid and Roots of Pacha, both in a group 4. We had lots of fun with those two, and I think they're both great co-op time-sink games. Zomboid is a zombie survival sim that has way more attention to detail than its graphics may imply. It's still in early access but the depth to its is honestly pretty dang impressive. Pacha iterates on the Stardew Valley formula in a ton of small but deliberate, thoughtful ways that make for a nice twist on that Harvest Moon style game.
REMAKES
There were so many great remakes this year, on top of just amazing games in general, I can't fit them all into my Top 10. So here's a segment dedicated to most of the remakes I loved this year.
The remake of Super Mario RPG was such a surprise, and turned out very damn well. That game, turns out, is very near and dear to my heart and I did not fully appreciate that until this remake was revealed. It comes just shy of cracking my Top 10 list and that's honestly only because I finished Mother 3 finally right at the tail end of the year. This game manages to still feel weirdly fresh even today just due to how fucking strange it is, and the remake speeds up the pacing a bit while also adding in some new mechanics and a chunk of new post-game content. Everything was handled so well. This is like the new gold standard of complete one-to-one remakes of sprite-based games imo. I will admit the artstyle is a bit 'off' in some ways but I think it's very clean looking and captures that 90's CGI spirit really well, all things considered. And the music, OOF, so damn good.
The remake of Dead Space I don't have much to talk about, but it's very well produced. It's remade so well, in fact, that it felt like my memories of the original, even though I know it's not an exact recreation. Very well done and still holds up as a great horror action game with these improvements.
The remaster of Metroid Prime is so impressive it feels like a remake, even if the game is identical to the original aside from presentation and some control changes. It's an iconic classic, and yet I have no patience to do the Chozo Artifact stuff, so I actually did not roll credits on this version BUT still thoroughly enjoyed reliving the game with a very nice new coat of paint. It makes me excited to see what Prime 4 will look like on, I expect, more powerful hardware.
SHOWS/MOVIES
The year started strong with a TV adaptation of The Last of Us. While I've come to have conflicted feelings with the franchise at large, mainly due to its leading boss man, I thoroughly enjoyed the first season of this series. Very well done adaptation that picked and chose what to keep and what to change and honestly makes for a better story as a whole if you ask me, while not really replacing the game's tactile interactive tensions. Cannot wait to see what they do with Part 2 tbqh. I loved that game more than the original but also felt it was worse as an overall game/experience/narrative. But a fresh take on that same plot could potentially address a lot of the issues I had with Part 2, while simultaneously not really 'replacing' it, either.
The Bear. If you haven't seen it, it's just. Very good television. Two seasons in and it's sitting up there chasing Mr. Robot and Better Call Saul as one of the best live action series I've ever seen. Season 2 did such a great job of giving us deeper dives on the various characters and building toward an organic and rewarding conclusion that still leaves room for another season to theoretically wrap things up. Nothing too crazy with this show, it's super down to earth, and it owns that very well with editing and pacing that varies per episode, kind of in line with the different character perspectives.
Super Mario Bros.: The Movie had me worried for a while, mainly due to the animation studio and casting. And while I'm still not 100% sold on this celebrity casting, I will admit it didn't weight the experience down -- even if it's still the second weakest element by far. The weakest element is the writing. It's not, like, offense -- it's loyal to the source material and works, it functions. But it's not doing anything beyond pushing us from set piece to set piece. If anything, the movie is a bit too short for all of the stuff it's cramming in. But on the upside, there is a lot of amazingly rendered visuals and music to take in. A real treat for fans of the franchise, and the most loyal gaming adaptation in movie form, I would say.
Across the Spiderverse is in essence the first half of a two part film. That makes it kind of difficult to talk about, especially when it's also a sequel, and the production sounds like it was marred with bad management and crunch. But the results they came up with actually met my hopes and expectations for a sequel, and that is saying something, as I had very high expectations. I completely adore this film's stupendous sense of style, editing, framing, writing, and the way it's making meta-commentary on multiple levels on top of just being an effective narrative on its own. This is animated storytelling running at full capacity in my opinion, and in general just film doing all of the kinds of things film can do. So it's no wonder that there's still a rub -- this is the first half of the story they planned. The editing, animation, framing, effects, acting, action sequences, music, writing, theming, just Farore's sake, this is SUCH a damn banger of a film and one of the best movies I've ever seen, which, again, is kind of insane given the circumstances. I can only hope they don't fuck up the conclusion.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was quite the surprise announcement, and as it turns out, quite the surprise adaptation. I won't spoil much but I will say that by the end of the first episode, it becomes very apparent that this series is no mere by-the-books adaptation, and does something unique and edifying, even if it still maintains a certain surface-level depth I wish the franchise would push beyond. Either way, I enjoyed it way more than I expected to going in, and I think it makes for a great companion to the rest of the series. The animation style was super fun, as well, with some great action sequences.
But Blue Eye Samurai sucker-punched me, having released before I'd even known about it. This show is something else, something unlike any other animated show I've seen besides Arcane. And it's not like it's mimicking Arcane, it's just the closest I can think to compare it to: a quality, thoughtfully framed, thoughtfully written, made-for-adults animated series. It tows the line between fantasy and realism in a refreshing way, its protagonist is great, its cast is compelling, its plot goes to some neat places, and things just feel very well thought-out and well-executed. Slap this in second place behind Arcane as the TV series I am the most excited to see more of in the future, just ahead of The Bear.
Something I did near the end of the year was watch The Hunger Games movies, back to back over the course of like, a week. Have not read the books but man, watching these sure made me interested in doing so at some point. I totally get why people were so enamored with this franchise, and honestly, I think its themes and messages are more relevant now than they were when this franchise was at the peak of its popularity. The films certainly have glaring issues for my tastes but yea, I managed to really enjoy them as a whole despite my lack of mainstream sensibilities. Looking forward to reading the books eventually.
Another thing my wife shared with me was 花ざかりの君たちへ (often called 'Hana-Kimi' for short). Specifically, the 2007 version, as, uh, apparently there are multiple adaptations of this. It was a live action Japanese drama about a high schooler who was born female but transfers into an all-boys school, identifying as a boy while she is there. There's more to it than that, and I won't say it handles everything the best (it's from the mid 2000's) or concludes things in quite the way I'd have preferred. Not to mention it's kind of weird seeing many tropes I'm used to seeing in anime rendered by physical, real actors. BUT it was overall a really sweet, adorable, funny, heartfelt, and reached for pro-queer expression in a time and place when that wasn't mainstream yet (and honestly kinda still isn't depending on who you ask).
Good Omens Season 3 also dropped this year. I actually don't have much to say partly because I think a big element of it is just not knowing what to expect going into it! But it was also very good, very fun, pretty damn gay, I really enjoyed it and am crossing my fingers hard they get to wrap it up the way they want.
All right! Onto my personal top 10 GOTYs.
TOP 11 GAMES
(I played and finished in 2023)
11) Mother 3
The one entry on this list that did not actually come out this year -- in fact, it's never technically released outside of Japan. Originally release in 2007 on the Game Boy Advance, this quirky RPG has developed quite the reputation. I started playing the fan translation back in like 2020, and only got around to finally finishing it this year. While that likely did tarnish the experience a bit for me, so does the final third or so -- it kind of drags on a bit, and any old school format RPG that requires grinding to progress can become a bit of a chore.
Thankfully, Mother 3 did earn its hallowed reputation in my eyes now that I have experienced it. I totally get the passion for this game now, and I am a convert. It makes me want to finally finish Mother 2, aka Earthbound. But here's the biggest thing about Mother 3 I weirdly did not expect going in, yet smashed my face in like a hammer by the time I finished it:
without Mother 3, there is no way Undertale/deltarune would exist.
The DNA for Toby Fox's works is achingly obvious in its relation to this game, specifically. I won't spoil anything and I won't go into my long list of evidence like an Ace Attorney case, but trust me, there is ample evidence to make this claim.
And that also means that Mother 3 stands on its own merits as doing things that RPGs just plain were not doing in 2007, and in some ways still aren't today. Aside from some pacing issues further in, the characters in your party aren't as developed as much as I'd like. BUT the overall narrative it tells, especially in those opening chapters, have a rare kind of earnest, human magic to them that most games just don't let themselves fall into. And it concludes in ways I did not expect and yet offered clarity as to why it is so beloved, and how Toby Fox was so inspired to put his own mark on the gaming landscape.
I owe a great deal to Undertale, personally, and as such, I also owe a great deal to Mother 3. You don't need to have played others in the series to enjoy it, you'll just be missing some referential stuff here and there. It's quite playable and unique by today's standards and I strongly recommend it if you want an RPG that is heartfelt, funny, fun mechanically, and has some simple but hard-hitting things to say about the world we live in, and what we are doing to ourselves and that world.
10) Super Mario Bros. Wonder
What can be said that hasn't been said already? Nintendo knocked it out the park with this one. This was everything I've wanted in a 2D Mario for like 15 years. The only thing 'missing' from it is playable Rosalina, but hey, we finally got Daisy in a mainline Mario game, so I'll take it. After a decade or so of dragging their feet with low-effort but enjoyable 2D games, Super Mario Wonder finally, at long last, captures what makes Nintendo games great and with their best foot forward. They haven't done 2D Mario this well since World on the SNES in 1991. And they have never put this level of production into a 2D game since... ever?
This is one of the all-time best 2D platformers out there, and for once it finally feels like 2D Mario is running on all cylinders as a big budget passion project kind of game. You love to see it.
9) Scarlet Hollow
This game isn't technically finished yet, as it is episodic, and its developers wanted to release Slay the Princess in the interim, but that doesn't stop its quality from being good enough to make my list. This game is doing the kinds of things visual novels should be doing, the kinds of things I wish to do in a sense with my own visual novel development.
It's a horror themed experience but balances the high tension with actual real stakes very well against mostly down-to-earth conversations, with lots of great tricks and touches of presentation you don't typically see in indie visual novels, along with a fantastic art style, charming characters (my favorite character has turned out to be the one I immediately disliked at first, and that's rare for me), and meaningful choices.
I can't wait to see how this one wraps up but even as it stands it's one of the best things I experienced in 2023.
8) Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Redeemed
I will admit I skipped Xenoblade Chronicles 2 after giving it an honest go in like, 2019 or so. A few hours in and i couldn't stomach it, the tonal whiplash from Xenoblade 1 (one of the best RPGs I've ever played) was too much for me. But then Xenoblade 3 came out last year, and is also one of the best RPGs I've ever played, even better than the original for my tastes.
But I wasn't prepared for the DLC to drop a whole ass side-game on us, a self-contained prequel to 3 that serves as narrative cohesion to tie the whole trilogy together with a bow on top, complete with perfectly tuned fanservice (and not the sexy kind, although grown-up Rex and Shulk, well, yes) that really respects its fanbase for investing hundreds of hours in this franchise.
Matthew is easily one of my all-time fav RPG main characters, probably the favorite RPG main character when I think of it (as main characters specifically go, anyway), and his game is a fraction of the length of many RPGs out there. But as usual, the entire cast had their charms, the story was nicely paced, the gameplay and overall length was just about damn perfect for what I could want from the genre.
As an expansion to a pre-existing game, this is one of the top 3 best expansions/DLCs I've ever played. When taken as a side story to an overarching trilogy, I'm not even 100% in on the lore and I still enjoyed the hell out of it, it's just the kind of thing that hits a tone of 'damn, video games are a fucking unique medium that we can do specific narrative things with across years of telling a story.'
I don't know where Monolith Soft is going next, though the ending certainly offers some intriguing teasing, but I suspect I will be there day one to see it, and am looking forward to it.
7) Pikmin 4
Given the long wait (10 years!) one might understand fan concern over the state of Pikmin 4. Turns out, that extra time was spent making this game fucking good. It's not the largest, most impressive, most complex, most inspiring, most 'anything' game I played this year, and yet I can't help saying that this is a damned good video game. It really nailed what it set out to do as a sequel, incorporating just the right ideas to spice up the formula while bringing things back to how Pikmin 2 was, and improving on the series in basically every way -- including stuff to do!
This is easily the most Pikmin game... in a Pikmin game. I still haven't 100%'d it. Without giving away any details, I'll just say that when a game rolls credits and you're only like, halfway through its content, and it just keeps going, that's just kind of wild. It would've felt like a great game even then, but the breadth and depth it ends up going to in order to keep giving you ways to engage with its wonderfully detailed world and addictive mechanics, I love it.
I just want more of it. Give me DLC with more Dandori content, the formula and feel just works so well at this point.
6) Sea of Stars
How the hell I forgot to include this one on my list initially is boggling. Easily one of the best indie games I've ever experienced. The writing is nothing to, well, write home about, but it's not bad. And in fact the story has a lot of great things going on, from an interesting world to a very potent arc with the leading support character (who, let's face it, is kind of more the main character than your two main characters).
The game's art and music are phenomenal, capturing the essence of 90's era RPGs but clearly doing things not capable back then. Made even sweeter, the game is a prequel to the studio's prior work, The Messenger, which I also played and adored in tandem, kind of going back and forth between the two once I was partway into Sea of Stars. The way this RPG repurposes songs from Messenger as well as all kinds of seemingly superfluous elements but makes it feel cohesive is pretty great.
The game also trims a lot of the fat you'd find in older RPGs, as well as lets you customize your experience in a modern way using collectibles you can toggle on and off to grant all kinds of effects, like increasing or decreasing the difficulty in various ways.
The homage paid to classics like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG is clear but it's not at all copy-cat-ing, instead wearing those inspirations proudly on its sleeves and forging its own path with its own ideas. A fantastic collection of party members, a wonderful world, amazing presentation, and environments and pacing that help it stand apart from the genre that inspired it. I wish we got to know the leads better, there is a lack of character growth in many ways, but that's me grasping at straws to critique, it's just a fantastic experience and the studio should be very proud of what they've accomplished.
5) Hi-Fi Rush
This is gonna be a running trend from here on out, but on any other year, Hi-Fi Rush would've been my GOTY, easy. From this point on, we're talking measures of inches rather than miles in terms of my love for these games.
Hi-Fi Rush finally delivered on something I have waited like 20 years for: a rhythm action adventure where playing the game in sync with the music felt fucking cool and gave me emotional resonance in a way only this medium can. The humor was charmng. The visual aesthetic is almost peak 'my taste.' The music was groovy with a few tracks I did not see coming but loved seeing how they were incorporated. The story was surprisingly fun! The characters were fantastic, I loved the entire main crew in a way I rarely ever do and would jump at the chance to spend more time with (and hey, there's a whole bunch of post-game I have yet to do, so I intend to in 2024).
The only real thing I could reasonably ask for from this game is a way to play as those other party members in post-game content or new-game plus or something. And who knows, maybe we get that some day. Even if we don't, what they came up with here is the next best thing besides. And what we got is one the most video-gamey video games I have ever played, a real classic and one I think will go down as one of my all-time favs. A passion project given meaningful time, budget, and creatives to bring it to life.
Had this game offered multiple playable characters, a bit more development in its story, and maybe a stronger climax, it'd be higher. I still love it to death and want more games like it regardless.
Hi-Fi Rush is exactly what kind of game we could have gotten more of if the Internet hadn't pushed gaming into a 'live service' direction. It is literally the spirit of a PS2/GameCube game given modern form. And either way, we did get it, at least, in that form, and it fucking rocks.
4) Resident Evil 4 (Remake)
This year was big for remakes and remasters, but one stands tall above the rest, if you ask me. The original RE4 has stood as my fav in the franchise, the one that got me into the franchise, the one that got me into M-rated games in the first place. Lots of nostalgia, but it's held up surprisingly well over the years despite some limitations of the time (mainly the controls) and some older-fashioned sensibilities ("with ballistics, too~").
But Capcom fucking nailed it with this reimagining. Like Final Fantasy VII: Remake, this game is not a remaster, or a one-to-one recreation. It is a brand new game, built from the ground up, reimagining the original entirely, complete with new mechanics and story. But unlike with FF7, this is also shockingly authentic and loyal to the original at the same time. It remixes elements from the original game, maintains most of the original's map design, adds in new stuff, removes some of the more goofy shit -- and even 90% of what feels 'removed' is revealed to be repurposed for the Ada side story DLC.
It looks great, it sounds great, the adjustments to characters and story are improvements across the board, (except for Hunnigan, RIP) the gameplay is improved in intensity and feel and action and replayability. And yet despite all of this, it balances that campy tone of the original just enough to still evoke what I loved about the original's tone. And it doesn't outright replace the original game, either. The two are now like different recipes of the same sandwich or something. There's reasons to revisit the original, though for me this has now replaced the remake of RE2 as my fav in the franchise.
I really don't know where they go from here but I will look forward to it, and regardless, they fucking nailed this one.
3) Street Fighter 6
Two Capcom games, back-to-back? They had a fucking good year in my eyes. The interesting thing about this particular entry is that unlike the others on this list, I will be continuing to play this one for hours and hours into 2024, especially with more fighters still planned. And in another year, this would've easily been my GOTY.
After all, Street Fighter 6 is the single-best traditional fighting game I think I've ever played. And while fighting games are my overall personal favorite genre, I'm more of a Smash player who also loves the hell out of Street Fighter and then dabbles in Tekken and whatever else releases. Street Fighter has always been one of my go-to top multiplayer games since I got into the franchise with SF4 in 2010. While I did enjoy SF5 well enough, it just didn't keep me hungry to come back for more like 4 did. SF6 has fixed that problem by way of a multitude of changes.
It has easily the most fun single player mode I've seen any fighting game have. Like, yea, The Subspace Emmisary (and even then, I don't love that mode like other folks do, I kinda think it's... fine?) but tbqh World Tour is just better in most every way. You get to build your own fighter, earn and mix and match different costumes and individual character special moves with each fighter's fight style. You get to just hang out with the SF characters, get to know them as people, their hobbies, their fears, their insecurities, their passions besides just beating the shit out of each other. On top of this, the realistic art style shift (a by-product of the RE Engine) seals the deal on what Street Fighter 6 is aiming to do: humanize its cast.
Is it still wacky as fuck? Is it still comical and weird and goofy? Hell yes, it is. Is the story mode deep in its narrative? Not in the slightest. But it's still stepping confidently in a direction fighting games should be trying to, not being too self-serious, but also being earnest.
And I haven't even touched on the mechanics! The Drive System alone is a brilliant addition that adds a sort of 'stamina' system that works so well to add an extra layer of decision making and tension. The game's not perfectly balance imo but for how much is here it is surprisingly damn well balanced, especially given they have insisted on not pushing out a single balance patch since it launched in June. For most any other competitive game, that would be like suicide for the scene, but the game seems to be thriving and selling extremely well for the franchise. And it's earned it.
I will absolutely be continuing my warrior's journey into 2024 and I can't wait to see what else Capcom has in store for this game.
2) Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Out of every game I played in 2023, Tears of the Kingdom is easily the most technically impressive. From a design standpoint, from a 'how in the hell is the Switch doing all of this without exploding' standpoint. From a 'holy hell how is there this much stuff in a single player game' standpoint. From a 'oh my goddesses that stupid batshit idea I had 100% worked because it actually did make sense' standpoint.
Where Breath of the Wild opened our minds as to what an open world game could be -- fully designed like one giant interconnected 'level' -- Tears of the Kingdom replied in much the way I expected: it pulled a Super Mario Galaxy 2. What I mean by that is that this is a direct sequel, building directly off the foundation of the original. You know. Like video game sequels almost always used to. And which many very successful ones still absolutely do.
But Tears of the Kingdom somehow managed to wow me all over again by adding to that open world's verticality in insane ways -- the Depths alone are probably my favorite 'mechanic' from any Zelda game ever besides the time loop of Majora's Mask (and what that did for the story and gameplay). But beyond the scale of the world basically doubling and then some (floating islands and caves on top of Depths), I was curious how this game could stand tall after Elden Ring, which is easily in my top 10 favorite games of all time at this point. Elden Ring was Fromsoft's reply to BOTW. And yet Tears of the Kingdom still managed to have something new to say in spite of that very strong reply.
Tears of the Kingdom opened the door to let players essentially create their own mechanics. By removing the abilities Link had to engage with the world before, and replacing them with a brand new toolset that includes abilities you just... don't see games give you, because they'd be 'overpowered,' TOTK designs its massive world in ways that invite you to use those 'overpowered' abilities however you see fit.
Being able to interact with the world and objects in this way, being able to fuse them together to create all kinds of effects, or new methods of transportation, even interacting with things not just spacially but in respect to time, it's nuts and fun and I've already poured like 130 hours with still so much I haven't done. And that's the thing: this game wasn't designed to be 100%'d. It was designed to just... be experienced, as much or as little as you want. And games on this level of scale/budget just do not have the guts to let so, so much 'content' be missed out on. And this game does.
It's a technical achievement and while I had my doubts with how strangely little Nintendo had to show, I am very glad that the experience itself manages to breathe new life into one of my all-time favorite games while improving on it in so many ways. It won't convert you if you didn't love the original -- this is a Super Mario Galaxy 2 style sequel, after all. But it's essentially replaced the original in ways I didn't think would be possible.
The story? Oof. Uh, not so much the story, let's ignore that part. That's what Nintendo wants you to usually do, anyway. But everything else, just. Din-damn.
It expands upon the first game's already fairly open-ended nature in an exponential way that I suspect developers will spend years to come trying to pin down, much like how they've spend the past 6 or 7 years trying to replicate BOTW's open world design.
For much of this year, I thought this was personal GOTY. And for many it will be, because it's just an extremely impressive video game.
Number 1...?
Going into this list, I kept telling myself, 'man, on any other year, this would be my GOTY. And if you know me personally you likely have already figured out what my GOTY is by omission. But the more I've thought about it, the more I've realized just how close these top 5 games are, it really is like centimeters instead of inches, and they each -- well, every game I've mentioned here, beyond the Top 10, as well -- offered something edifying that I was very satisfied with.
And no, it's not Baldur's Gate 3. While I have spent hours playing it in co-op and a little bit solo, that game's just not really for me, exactly. Like, I can enjoy it, and I have massive respect for the dev team and what they accomplished with it. But I don't much care for D&D, and the game just didn't do very much for me personally, I lack the motivation to finish it. Remove Karlach from the game and I have next to nothing to really attach myself to, personally. I definitely get why it's many people's favorite game of 2023, though, and I do think it's a bit of a wakeup call for what can be accomplished by just making a GAME instead of struggling to contort it into a service etc.
Street Fighter 6 is fucking fantastic but it could still use some more actual fighters and incentives to keep playing besides monetizing its players in weird ways. I love it, and it will be the game from 2023 I end up playing the most (it already is, I think). But if it ended as it is, I would be very satisfied.
Hi-Fi Rush is oozing with originality and style and I adore it to death, and when I finished it, I was very satisfied.
Resident Evil 4 kept me addicted for over 100 hours, had an amazing DLC expansion, oozes replaybility in the specific ways I like for a single player action game (rogue-likes besides). I am extremely satisfied by it.
Tears of the Kingdom is so massive and fun to just explore that I know I will continue to play more in the months to come. Will I ever revisit it entirely? I'm actually not sure! That massive length does lend some repetition, even if it's the kind I find therapeutic and satisfying.
And that's what made me realize something. My personal GOTY did not just satisfy me. It made me hungry. It filled me up in a way I didn't think was possible and yet I still hunger for more, because I enjoyed it that fucking much. I played through it twice and still hunger for more. I know I will play it a third time eventually, but mainly I just have not been to remove from my brain the particular ways it made me feel, ways that only a video game can. Nothing about it felt like it needed to be overlooked.
SF6 and RE4 had dubious monetization, TOTK had a story I found to be like 90% boring and it still maintains many of the flaws of the original. And Hi-Fi Rush, while amazing, just didn't scratch the particular itch this game did for me.
1) Lies of P
If you told me that Lies of P was a game developed by some sub-division of FromSoft, I'd believe you. Which is to say I would also believe that it was made by people who wanted to break free from some of the shackles of the now infamous 'soulslike' genre.
A narrative that actually makes sense by the end? Opening up options for the player without requiring specific stat levels? Encounters and boss fights that feel ravenously challenging without just feeling like cheap bullshit? Music that crosses borders beyond 'angry chorus, angrier orchestra'?
Lies of P doesn't quite eclipse Elden Ring, but that's an absolutely unfair comparison given the utter scope and scale and variety that game packs. But Lies of P improves at the FromSoft formula in specific ways, while making concessions in others, and as a result it's just an experience that seeped into my brain like no other game this year, not even Tears of the Kingdom, despite that I put half the hours into this one.
I love all of the games I have mentioned here, you could honestly swap around the order of this top 5 and I could mentally meander a way to justify why, no, actually, this one was my favorite game of 2023. In a year so awful for the people who make games, yet so amazing for games themselves, Lies of P is exactly the kind of game I needed. I needed someone to show me that you can make something directly inspired by someone else's work, yet fine tune it in all the right ways to make it stand just as tall in terms of quality and design. Lies of P made me feel things in ways only a handful of games ever do -- and I would actually count Hi-Fi Rush among those in a regard.
But Lies of P also told a story I found compelling. It had mystery, tension, buildup, it started off seeming like it would do the vague FromSoft schtick only to 100% come together, make sense, be rewarding, and offer a 'true ending' that I got on the first playthrough, organically, without looking things up, because it just... felt right. Not only is the game adapting FromSoft's formula into something its own, it's also doing that with the story of Pinocchio. The gameplay and the story congeal together not in the 'perfect' way that it does with games like Celeste or Undertale, but rather in a more... messy way, like a puppet aching to become a real boy.
The game is full of loss, in its world and for you as the player, who will die many times. But unlike much of FromSoft's catalogue, I never once felt like I died because of bullshit. Was I trolled? Sure, the game definitely 'trolls' you in classic FromSoft fashion, lulling you into a sense of security only to sweep you off your feet. But unlike how FromSoft does it, these circumstances can always be avoided if you're cautious. And if you're not? Hey, 'We got you! We gooottt youuu, haha' and you lose a couple minutes of progress, rather than like fifteen minutes and also an entire level's worth of souls because oh right, this section you just got through is kind of bullshit cheap.
Don't get me wrong, I love Dark Souls. But the thing is, Lies of P takes the parts I love about Dark Souls, admits it can't pull off quite the intricate web of level design, but then throws away everything I do not like about Dark Souls, improves on the things I already liked, and then pushes me to meet it on its level.
The satisfaction of being a boss you spend an hour, two hours on, cannot be understated. It's a feeling unlike any other, and one only this medium can provide. And Lies of P kept me motivated, like Sekiro before it, to keep improving, keep growing, keep trying. And unlike Sekiro, it gave me so many more tools to play with, to learn, to balance in an arsenal with intent. Enemies have elemental weaknesses if I so choose to exploit them, the moveset of one weapon's handle can be applied to a completely different blade, my robotic arm can leverage things in a pinch, or be the backbone to dealing with a boss. Mastery is rewarded with practice. A vicious boss that annihilates you in five seconds can be defeated without a single scratch if you practice enough. Mastery, creativity, quick thinking, and reacting are all rewarded here.
I am more than the hands pulling the strings, I am more than a puppet, I am human. And games like this can only be made by humans, who get that specific itch that only video games that challenge us can scratch. It's not an itch everyone has, but that's why it's my GOTY and not yours, innit?
With its unique setting, its wonderful music, its cozy hub area, its narrative that offers just enough to make me care, but not so much that I am bored or feel misled, its amazing boss designs, and its wonderfully tactile and engaging combat, Lies of P is a game I just can't stop feeling something about whenever I am reminded of it.
It epitomizes so much -- not all, but much -- of what I love about what video games can do, what adaptations can do, and much like how Toby Fox was inspired by Mother 3, what people can do when they are inspired by someone else's work.
As far as I can tell, this is developer Round8's debut game, and just. Holy hell, what a way to come out swinging. I haven't seen a debut game hit this hard since, I don't know, Bastion.
Close your eyes. Come to me. Feel all right.
I did, and I do, and given what you teased at the end of this game, I have extremely high hopes of what you come up with next. And in a landscape where things feel more difficult to get excited for with each passing year, much less new IP, it's so damn refreshing to have both Hi-Fi Rush and this game standing out as signals that, hey, some folks are still willing to invest bigger budgets into new games, new ideas.
Again, a battle of centimeters here and at this point I should wrap this up and go to bed.
But yea, Lies of P reminded me of what makes me, specifically, human, in a very particular way that only it has. And I honestly think out of all of single player games of 2023, I think it will actively stand out in my heart the most in the years to come.

wurr questions! beware i am being exceedingly nosy, and also willing to wait for my answers!!
1. within the crater, how common are deepblood females? what happens when such a female is found pregnant, or in heat ( and is heat even a thing among the wurrlings? ) ? if born, would all her children be considered deepblooded for safety's sake, or is that judged on a case-by-case basis?
2. what other canids of the wurrworld are sophonts? i remember mention of african painted dogs in the south. what are relations between them, dogs and wolves like? what are the societal stances on hybrids between those species and dogs? how are those species dogs cannot interbreed with treated?
3. are hounds genetically closer to dogs or wolves, or are they essentially a third species at this point? can even a deepblood mate with dogs/wolves, or is that still unsafe?
4. in your art, how do you distinguish between actual wolves and dogs that just have pointy ears, thick coats and augoti colours?
1: Okay so the definition of a deepblooded is one who's mutations are hard or severe enough that if they had puppies A: they would all be stillborn B: die shortly after birth, probably painfully and/or C: kill the mother at the process of giving birth. That's basically a scale of tragedy from "losing all your babies" to "suicide by breeding". I'm sure you can use your imagination.
Pyramos is deepblooded because of his skeletal deformations that basically made him impossible to be born (he was cut out of his dying mother, and was the only one of his litter to survive). Crippled is deepblooded because of his innards not being functional, including barely functioning digestive system and having two hearts neither of which work properly. His parents technically weren't, on their own, but their personal mutations were too similar and stacked, which made their blood "too deep" when combined, and he's, again, the only survivor. Iacar's aunt Crom is deepblooded because she's physically incapable of getting puppies out of herself.
On the contrast, despite his size and shape, Morri is not considered deepblood because he was born a normal (seven eyed) puppy, who got his growth spurt around puberty, so he's not a case of murder-by-breeding.
2: I prefer not to waste energy and mental resources on worldbuilding something that's never ever going to be even remotely relevant to the plot/story/making of the comic. I want the story to reach its end someday, I don't want to derail it by turning it into an epic of discovering uncontacted continents and political intrigue on the other side of the dang planet when the story happens in relatively limited area that's still basically neolithic. Please, this thing has eaten enough of my life, I don't need to make it a globe spanning monster. Feel free to fanfic, but I, personally, do not have the spoons.
3: Depends on which definition of "species" you're using here. Proto dogs, I guess. They're dogs who got stuck at a place that turns everything living into monsters, but like, wolves aren't that far either. For deepbloods, again, it's death by breeding, do not recommend. No matter how healthy of a guy the dog/wolf would be, aunt Crom still could not squeeze live puppies through her deformed pelvis even if they somehow made it long enough in her twisted innards.
4: I mean, I hope you can see it just by looking at the comic, there is one wolf in it for a while, plus a half-wolf who looks very wolfish by design.
Wolves are wolf-shaped, and I hope I can do good enough job at it for people to tell them apart. I don't make dog characters wolf-shaped. There are internal rules for wolf-markings, that I just don't use for dog characters. If you look at the comic, you might notice I haven't designed a single dog with complete wolf markings (no matter what Grimmon might tell you), and there are extremely few who even have any gradient markings at all, and those are definetely not wolf-shaped. Wolves are also bigger (approx Surama sized) and have wolf eyes (little to no visible sclera), while all Wurr dogs have human eyes. You might also notice the only characters to have visibly drawn inner ear hair are of wolf blood.
But I honestly really hope the art itself is enough without me having to explain aloud the design choices. Kinda feels like I've failed at making them if the only way the readers can tell them apart is if I have to tell them how.

So recently I came out as ace to my friends
My friends in the Dungeons and Dragons group that my partner runs, anyway.
I'm playing an asexual bard, because I love flipping archetypes. Last campaign I was a pacifist barbarian. It was great! But I was doing research to play said ace Bard, and it led me to asking questions about myself that I was pretty sure I knew the answer to, but was afraid to truly acknowledge until now.
So I come out to them, and my dragonborn paladin player was like ".....so what's ace?"
And my dwarven warlock, who my ace bard halfling has a crush on, responded "Oh, asexual. They don't feel sexual attraction to people."
To which my half-elf monk replies "Well, maybe you just haven't found the right person yet?" (Don't blame her, she's a 60 year old woman.)
To which the warlock (bless him) goes "Well no, Red's not aromantic, they still have feelings. They're with the DM. They just don't find people sexy. Right?"
And I confirm, and explain that ace just means no attraction, and that I still am sexual with my partner (who I asked for permission to disclose details if asked beforehand) and that while I don't look at a person and think "Woah, sexy." that doesn't mean I don't have nerve endings or anything like that.
I've always described myself with this metaphor, and I'll post it here. Pretty people are pretty, like paintings. At no point ever have I thought "I wanna fuck that painting."
Paladin and Monk were confused, but eventually Warlock and I explained, and they got the spirit. They both congratulated me on being more authentically myself, and it was all very sweet.
So, happy ending!
....But I also started the conversation with: "So you guys are attracted to people, right? Like you just see people on the street and think 'Oh dang, I would like to have sex with that person?'"
And they confirm, and Warlock goes "It's like smelling someone cooking as you walk down the street. You don't suddenly NEED to eat, but you might feel a rumble in your stomach."
And my response was "Oh, because I totally thought people were just LYING."
Like it was one of those things you did as a kid, like "Oh yes, I am an adult and like The Sex with the Hot Person Over There."
TURNS OUT ONLY I WAS LYING. =D
Ahhhh ace adventures. -Red

Doug Eiffel is hilarious and deserves his own series of radio shows
(Or my reaction to Wolf359's three untitled mini episodes!)
Welcome back dear readers! I wish I could react to more full length episodes, but life in terms of health and work load has not been kind to me (yep. I'm sick again). Fortunately, I was informed that these mini episodes can be listened to at any time and they are fairly short, so I'm gonna give it a shot! (If I was misinformed and am about to have a ton of plot spoiled for me, I apologize in advance!)
Tagging the mutuals who got me invested in this, and if you want to be tagged or untagged from these posts, lmk, or you can follow my blog or simply follow the tag "#bods wolf359 reactions". Anyone who has followed me for a while knows my updates are inconsistent, so I apologize in advance for that and for any spelling/grammar mistakes in my posts.

Mini Episode: Adventure of a Lifetime
Ohhhh... a field trip into the mysterious rooms!
...this might not work out for you Doug, but I hope you find something useful.
Huh. Empty rooms. ...why do I get the feeling they aren't all empty?
Different shade of grey paint? Doug have you never played a video game? I mean, I haven't either, but even I know what that means.
Great, now he's locked in.
"I'm hungry, I didn't have breakfast, It's been five hours." WHY AM I DOUG 😂
Doug yeah the grey spot sounds pretty bad.
"Did you try pushing?" Hilbert is so done with him.
19 minutes? I'm not sure if that's funny because Doug is dramatic, or spooking because these rooms actually mess with time perception.
"You never mention this to anyone and I won't ask you what you're doing on this part of the station" Doug you really oughta be asking though.
Oh. That was it? Huh. Very short. I wonder what the next one has in store...
Mini Episode: Step One
Ah! More Doug! Why IS he going outside?
Hey, Doug. Do not speak badly about the commander. Trust me, the day will come when you realize Minkowski is the best commander you could ever have.
He stole her diary? Oh Doug...
"If this tape shows up in my murder trial, you'll know why I made this recording"
Imagine if Cutter tried to use this audio to frame Minkowski for Doug's death (he would. He'd drop it off at her husband's office like "sorry about your wife becoming a murderer. Apparently a disgruntled employee took her diary and she snapped").
Poor Doug. Scrambling to solve a mess he created in a very unsafe way because he can't ask for help or else he'll get caught? Why is he so dang relatable. Someone get this man to a doctor. He needs Adderall. And his daughter back.
"I have the perfect plan" oh dear. Doug, those words never go well for me either.
"Doug was great, I need to lighten up a lot" 😂
"She somehow saw through my forgery" oh poor Doug.
Are these episodes just Doug getting himself into situations? Because that's hilarious and wonderful.
Mini Episode: Space Rage
"Badass McAwesome" Is that Doug doing a southern accent? I love his radio shows.
Is he talking about Minkowski? Is he broadcasting that through the ship?
"Our God given American right to free speech and funny jokes!" Amen Doug 🫡
Oh my gosh he's talking to himself 😂.
"I'm stuck in this crappy job searching for alien life for 14 hours a day" "we've all certainly been there" I can't, please 😂😂😂
"There's this script you're supposed to broadcast" "sound like command trying to keep you down"
"I've been reciting every Simpson's treehouse of horror episode from memory" / "That's the way Abe Lincoln would have wanted it."
I love this. I love patriot cowboy Doug. 🤠 You can't be taking his freedoms!
"Fighting the good fight" aksjkfjsdlf;kj
Oh who is the sponsor this time? Oh Dr. Hilbert's seaweed coffee. "It's the only thing we have. It's the only thing we have."
"You're live. Let freedom ring!" Doug is the best honestly.
Oh dear.
"Okay you're taking me alive. That's all the time we have for today folks!"
Doug is iconic.
These were great. Short, but great. Maybe I'll try to listen to the Mission Mishap ones a few at a time so that I can still give you reactions, even if I don't have the time or health to give you the full length reactions you deserve dear readers. But don't worry. As soon as I have time, I will react to the rest of the series. Thanks for reading!

Sorry if this is too nosy, but omg Caroline a new crush??
Say more, say more! You’ve been friends for a while? What does he do that makes your stomach flutter?? Why do we like him? Is he kind?? 👀
NOT TOO NOSY AT ALL i literally cant shut up about it to anyone who will listen to me LMAO!!!
here is the situation. so basically he is this guy who is sort of peripherally related to my college friend group and so for the last several months i've just sort of been seeing him around at parties and hangouts and stuff (i think we officially met at our mutual friend's friendsgiving party? but we went to college together so i've known who he is for a while but we just never really crossed paths in college)
ANYWAY. so like back in january or something we were at this house party and my roommate and i were talking to him for a while and then when we left she turned to me and was like "what the fuck was that." and i was like what? and she was like "why did i feel like paint drying on the wall, he only talked to you for that entire conversation" and i was like omg bc i also had thought he was being really nice to me but i hadn't really thought much of it until she said that. so then a couple months passed and we kept seeing each other around and i kind of was expecting something to happen between us but then it never did so i was just sort of like ok dang i guess i misinterpreted that and moved on.
well ANYWAY last friday we were out at the club and HE KISSED ME. and it was great and fun and blah blah blah but we haven't said anything about it since so i have no idea if it was like the start of something or just like a one time thing but i've been going insane ever since and i can't stop thinking about him.
and yes he's very kind :) but i dont know!! i have no idea what to expect but it's exciting because i haven't seriously had anything happen in my love life in so long other than my delusional crush on my ex and my flop online dating era so it's kind of exciting that even if it doesn't go anywhere i kind of did successfully pull off a friends to lovers scenario for myself even just for one night
#answered#anonymous#WAAAAHHHHHH anon im freaking out#i had drinks w my high school friend last night and she was like i havent seen you with a crush like this in so long#love life

("Careless")
Part four. Chapter 1
David chiem x reader
I don't remember what happened there. I just remember waking up on the floor laying down on my stomach. I sat up and wiped a bit of drool from my face. It took two seconds to realize that there were loud banging noises coming from my door. I got scared, after what I've seen. I don't trust anyone else.. I waited for a few seconds to see the person's reaction
"Hello? This is David. Are you awake?" I heard the voice of David Chiem (the guy with blue hair) outside the door.
I stayed silent for a few minutes. David seemed like a nice guy. But something about him felt off. For some reason I always feel like hes---
"Ugh. They're probably not awake. I've been knocking at her door every hour. This is absolutely stupid. I wish I were in bed. None of these people are worth my time..." I heard an soft whisper from behind the door by David.
``Dang. His whole personality changed.`` I thought to myself. Shocked that he went from a nice and kind tone of voice to annoyed and bothered one. I thought this was enough information and I opened the door. I decided to go to the door and push it towards him hardly. The door SMACKED him in the face from the push
"Ow- What the-?! Oh.. hey there.." David stood there awkwardly as he sees me
``What do you want? I was sleeping.`` I said. Not mentioning what he said before I opened the door.
"A little rude how you smacked me with the door... But anyways. The others were calling you. You have been in your dorm all day, They made me come talk to you, and tell you that you need-" David was cut off mid sentence
``Why do you 'ultimates' like you need me? I'm just an bother..`` I said. I just woke up so I felt a bit annoyed
"Don't say that." David responded
``Oh shut it with your mini-hope speeches. I heard what you said before I opened the door`` I responded. And that's when David's eyes widened
"You.. did??" David looked shocked
"How did you hear me..?" David looked down nervously
``You said it clearly and loudly. Are you that stupid for someone who does speeches all the time?`` I responded
"What did you say to me?..!" David responded a bit angrily
``You heard what I said.`` I crossed my arms.
"Why you..." David was cut off mid sentence when Xander walked towards us
"Oh. Mr. Chiem and Ms. (L/N), What's happening? You two look annoyed." Xander asked
``Nothing, David's just tired. That's all.`` I responded. David's eyes widened at the fact I kept his mean personality secret.
"Hmm, I recommend you guys take a rest. And also. I haven't seen you long, Ms. (L/N). You haven't gotten out of your room in quite a while. Are you okay?" Xander asks. A bit worried. But I brushed it off with a small chuckle. Xander was about to talk but was called by Teruko.
As Xander walked away. David looked at me with confusion in his eyes. Before looking down and speaking.
"I'm damn surprised you didn't just call me out, You're still a bitch though." He exhales, a bit of frustration still hinted at his voice... Though he breathes in. Letting out a bit of his anger. While he tries to look back up. He notices your arm that was holding the door.
"...The fuck?" David's eyes widened a bit as he looked at your arm. You looked down at your arm. Realizing he saw the bruises. Before he said another word. You slammed the door shut. Making sure he doesn't walk inside. You lock the door. Letting out a sigh of pure frustration. You noticed a picture frame on the wall. Showing your family. Before you angrily rip it off the wall. Paint tearing off a bit and throw it to the trash can
``Oh look. It's my life.`` You laugh. Referring to the trash can. Calling your life trash as you angrily kick the trash can.
``FUCK!`` You yell out as you felt the pain in your foot when you kicked it. Dropping to the floor and grabbing your foot in pain.
This is gonna be a long day, isn't it?
