Where New York politicians stand on Palestine

The majority of Democrats in DC, despite their voter base being overwhelmingly in support of a ceasefire, refuse to disavow the genocide in Gaza or call for ceasefire.

They are able to do this, to disregard the outrage of their constituency, because they feel certain that no matter how many letters we send, we will show up and vote for them when the time comes. They are certain their actions have no consequences.

Senator Chuck Schumer has received about $526.5k from Israeli lobby groups since 2019. He refuses to call for ceasefire. This is his going rate to endorse genocide.

Senator Kristen Gillibrand has received $174k from Israeli lobby groups since 2019. She refuses to call for ceasefire. This is her going rate to endorse genocide.

10/26 New York congressional representatives are Republicans. None have called for ceasefire. Palestinian genocide is core to the Republican platform.

Of the 16 Democrat representatives, only 4 have called for ceasefire. The following NY Democrat representatives have called for ceasefire. They were not swayed by money received from Israeli lobby groups.

Nydia Velazquez, 7: not swayed by $8k from Israeli lobby groups this cycle, nor the $12k the cycle before that or the $250 in 2020.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 14: not swayed by the confusing $27 from Israeli lobbyists. Received nothing last cycle and $150 before that.

It's time to start talking about primary opposition and third party voting. It's time to start exercising our power as voting citizens.

The Sonic X dub was not as bad as people said it was.

When I see that people hating on Sonic X, they have the number one reason why they hate the show: the English dub by 4kids is what made people hate the show. The 4kids dub of Sonic X is considered by many to be the worst things to have ever happen to the Sonic fandom because the dub had a lot of censorship, whacky voice acting, major plot rewrites, and replacement music. Because of that, people hold it as the reason why people hate Sonic X. However, I grew up with the up since i was six in 2009 and upon rewatch, it still holds up and it was not the unholy entity that people said it was. I am going to give you the reasons why the Sonic X dub is still worth watching despite and looking past the censorship and plot rewrites.

The first thing that made me fell in love with the dub is the wonderful voice acting that the dub has given us to lend the voices of the characters. Jason Griffith was phenominal as both Sonic and Shadow which he distincts himself with both Sonic and Shadow with his voice. Dan Green made Knuckles sounds so belivable compared to the other voice actors for the character. Lisa Ortiz gave Amy Rose the perfect spunk and fiery spirit while also giving her caring and friendly personality. Amy Palant as Tails was the most natural boy sounding voice that make the character sound so youthful and natural at the same time. I know that many people will hate me for this, but Kathleen Delany has to be the perfect choice for Rouge the Bat. She makes Rouge sound so unique and natural despite sounding older. Suzanne Goldish as Chris makes the character sound natural and tolerable for the audience. And finally, the main star of the dub voice cast is Mike Pollock as Dr. Ivo Eggman Robitnik. Pollock gave Eggman the balance of humor, compassion, and devious sides that other voice actors couldn't match. Yet, this is my first reason why I defend the Sonic X dub.

The second reason why I like the dub is the awesome dub opening titled "Gotta Go Fast", with the lyrics written by Norman J Grossfeld and it was sung by Russell Velazquez. The theme song literally captured the spirit of the franchise and the show as a whole. The theme song is peak 2000s pop-punk rock themed music that was coming out from that decade and the song reflected the decade's style.

So in conclusion, the 4kids dub of Sonic X is still a watchable dub if people look past the censorship and plot rewrites that the dub did. Sonic X is still one of the most influential sonic series of all time and the 4kids dub made it popular in the US while it had low ratings in Japan. Please give the dub a chance and look past the censorship to see that it was not bad as people claimed it to be.

In samenwerking met de Kunsthalle Múnchen ontwikkelde het Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg de tentoonstelling Mythos Spanien, gewijd aan de Spaanse schilder Ignacio Zuloaga (1870-1945).

Zuloaga werd in 1870 geboren in Eibar in Baskenland. In 1889 of 1890 trok hij naar Parijs, het toenmalige wereldcentrum van de kunst. Ook later zou hij nog regelmatig naar de lichtstad terugkeren. De jonge Zoluaga was bevriend met kunstenaars, musici en schrijvers. Zo deelde hij een atelier met Paul Gauguin, was bevriend met Auguste Rodin en ging  samen met Maurice Ravel op reis. Als je de schilderijen uit deze Parijse periode bekijkt, zie je een jongeman die nog op zoek is naar zijn eigen stijl. Zijn werk toont invloeden van naturalisme, impressionisme en symbolisme. Drie schilderijen die naast elkaar aan dezelfde muur hangen, laten de variatie in zijn stijlen zien: een muzikant in Rouen, een portret van collega-kunstschilder Émile Bonard en een dame van lichte zeden in een café. Dit laatste schilderij vind ik zelf heel interessant. Op het eerste oog zien we een keurig geklede dame, zittend  aan een tafeltje bij het raam. Eind negentiende eeuw was het allesbehalve gepast voor een dame om alleen in een café te zitten. Het gaat dan ook hoogstwaarschijnlijk om een prostitué die wacht op een nieuwe klant. De stoel naast haar is uitnodigend leeg. Het raam kijkt uit op de Moulin Rouge, een plaats waar het vermaak op zijn zachtst gezegd enigszins seksueel gekleurd was.

Parijs bracht de kunstenaar niet waar hij naar zocht. Hij wilde Spaans schilderen. Dus keerde hij terug naar zijn vaderland. Spanje was ooit een wereldmacht was geweest, maar was nu zijn laatste koloniën kwijtgeraakt en was op zoek naar een nieuwe identiteit. Zuloaga droeg hieraan bij door typisch Spaanse thema’s te schilderen. Hierbij ging het niet altijd om een weergave van Spanje zoals het daadwerkelijk was. De kunstenaar greep terug op ‘Il siglo de oro’, de gouden eeuw van de Spaanse schilderkunst met schilders als Velazquez en El Greco. Hun invloed is dan ook terug te vinden in zijn werk.

Een interessant deel van de tentoonstelling is gewijd aan het religieus erfgoed van Spanje. Zijn kruisiging is bijzonder opmerkelijk. We zien hier namelijk niet, zoals in de kunstgeschiedenis gebruikelijk is, Jezus aan het kruis, met naast hem Maria en Johannes. We zien een daarvan afgeleid Spaans ritueel. Jezus is vervangen door een beeld van Christus aan het kruis. Dat beeld is, zoals in de Spaanse traditie al sinds de contrareformatie gebruikelijk is, hyperrealistisch. Het bloed gutst over het lichaam van de gekruisigde. Van de priester links kun je je afvragen of zijn gedachten wel bij het ritueel zijn. De andere aanwezigen vormen nauwelijks een groep. Het zijn losse individuen die elk op hun manier deel van de scène uitmaken.

Ook De kardinaal is geen doorsnee portret van een reële kardinaal. De afgebeelde persoon is een van Zuloaga’s favoriete modellen. Zijn ingevallen wangen en stoppelige baard stralen niet bepaald gezag en waardigheid uit. Hoewel je in eerste instantie denkt dat de kardinaal in een landschap zit, blijkt dat een illusie. Een gordijn en een tafeltje maken duidelijk dat we tegen een toneeldoek aankijken. Het hele tafereel is in scène gezet, als door een regisseur. Het schilderij grijpt duidelijk terug op een bekend werk van El Greco: Portret van Niño de Guevara. De inquisiteur is hier vervangen door een eenvoudige landarbeider. Een grappig detail is dat het brilletje dat El Greco’s kardinaal op de neus heeft, bij Zuloaga in de hand wordt gehouden. Wellicht is het schilderij een parodie op het werk van de zeventiende-eeuwse meester, maar waarschijnlijker is dat Zuloaga een eerbetoon wil brengen aan de door hem zeer bewonderde kunstenaar.

Voor wie nog mocht twijfelen aan de invloed van El Greco op de kunstenaar die in deze expositie centraal staat, moet maar eens goed kijken naar Der Anachoret (Der Einsiedler). Het slungelige, maniëristisch weergegeven lijf en de extatische blik van deze kluizenaar zou op een tentoonstelling van werk van El Greco niet misstaan.

In 1898 trok de schilder naar Segovia. Daar schiep hij veel van zijn belangrijkste werken: schilderijen van het karige rauwe landschap en zijn archetypische bewoners.

Naast de katholieke religie behoren ook de flamenco en het stierengevecht tot het Spaanse culturele erfgoed dat Zuloaga uitbeeldt. In Sevilla nam hij zelf deel aan stierengevechten. Misschien wel het meest indrukwekkende schilderij van deze tentoonstelling toont geen moedige toreador of jonge stierenvechter met veel bravoure. Het werk laat een vermoeide oude picador (een met lans uitgeruste hulp van de toreador) zien. De man rijdt op een mager paard. Ook het paard lijkt moe en zijn gang sjokkend. Beiden zitten onder het bloed. De achtergrond is duister en onheilspellend. De zaaltekst trekt een vergelijking met Don Quichotte en zijn paard Rosinante. De verslagen ruiter zou symbool staan voor de positie van Spanje, dat in 1898 de laatste van zijn koloniën, en daarmee zijn plek op het wereldtoneel, verloor.

Les modèles vivants sur France Culture

France Culture a récemment proposé une belle série sur le nu en art. L’un des épisodes est consacré à la profession de modèle vivant et il était difficile de passer à côté. L’épisode est d’une grande pertinence, qui montre comment l’histoire a oscillé sur le sujet entre indifférence et romantisation déplacée.  Toutefois l’intervention de l’historienne Nadeije Laneyrie-Dagen à la moitié de l’épisode (vers 16m. 45s.) appelle quelque débat.

1) Contrairement à ce qu’elle affirme, il y eut des modèles professionnels dès la moitié du XVIIe, comme le racontent les archives des académies royales, si ce n’est avant, quoique les sources soient maigres à ce sujet (la polysémie de l’expression "modèle professionnel" ne simplifie pas l’analyse). Ils étaient embauchés à l’année, travaillaient à temps plein (même si ce n’était pas qu’à la pose), portaient livrée du roi, avaient logement de fonction et protection sociale de l’établissement... Soit, ils représentaient une minorité de modèles, mais quand bien même.

2) Et l’hypothèse que cette historienne déroule au sujet de la modèle putative de la Vénus au miroir de Velazquez est également à discuter tant elle relève de la subjectivité, de la divination et tend à masquer le fait que les artistes recouraient souvent à plusieurs modèles pour un seul personnage. Mais le propos de l’historienne ne permet pas de savoir si elle relaie là et avec ironie des préjugés populaires, ou si elle transcrit une vraie hypothèse historiographique. Velazquez était un peintre de grand talent et qui témoignait d’une grande maîtrise dans sa figuration de l’anatomie. Il n’avait à coup sûr pas besoin d’un modèle sous les yeux pour en donner une traduction picturale très convaincante.  Regardons la manière dont il représenta Apollon aux forges de Vulcain (ci-dessus) . Qui oserait contester la maestria avec laquelle ces corps sont représentés ? Qui oserait n’y voir l’expression d’aucune sensibilité ? Et pourtant, qu’est-ce qui nous autoriserait à affirmer que Velazquez s’aida d’un modèle vivant pour chacun de ces corps, et qu’il ne s’est point reposé fortement sur son expérience et ses études de l’antique ? Qu’est-ce qui nous autoriserait à affirmer que "l’extraordinaire sensibilité" déployée dans la figuration de ces corps serait due à des relations sentimentales qui auraient uni Velazquez et ces modèles présumés ? Pas grand chose nous y autorise, et donc peu s’aventurent à ces extrapolations. Et pourtant, s’agissant de potentielles modèles féminines, alors là, c’est open bar...

3) Ce qu’elle dit de la duchesse d’Albe est plus intéressant. Il est difficilement contestable que Goya fut sensible aux charmes de la duchesse, et il y a pu y avoir entre eux deux un amour platonique. À ce sujet, il est contesté par les historiens que la duchesse d’Albe eût posé pour le tableau le plus croustillant, la Maja Nue, vers lequel les fantasmes se sont naturellement orientés.  Mais il est en effet instructif de la part de l’historienne de pointer le jeu trouble de la duchesse, se vantant et contestant en même temps d’avoir pu être la maîtresse de Goya et donc, par extension, d’avoir pu posé de manière plus extensive et plus "incorrecte".
