Thursday, December 22: Nightingale, “Still in the Dark”
I was the last time the Swanö brothers recorded under the Nightingale banner as a duo before adding a proper rhythm section and turning the project into an actual band. But numbers like “Still in the Dark” suggested that it might not have been necessary, as the track was a delightful modern melodic progressive metal number that cruised along both casually and with purpose. This was an especially nice changeup for Dan Swanö in particular, given his lengthy history in death metal, but his singing voice fit Nightingale’s material perfectly. “Still in the Dark” was so breezy and fun even while flaunting the brothers’ musicianship that it almost bordered on pop, but this was still the work of Dan Swanö so at the same time there was an idiosyncratic quality that made the track stand on its own.

Dan Swanö: “I wasn’t personally targeted for murder, but I was surely part of what Euronymous hated about death metal: that it had become more accessible. In the early days, I shuddered at the mere mention - it was the most evil and intimidating music imaginable. Far more so than black, thrash, speed, and doom metal.
But, for some reason, you could take this music and do what you wanted and still call it death metal. Keyboards, clean singing, cellos, acoustic guitars, piano, everything we were doing with Edge of Sanity and more.
Black Mark used to market Edge of Sanity as ‘death metal is back’. And I’m like, ‘Mm, yeah- but in reality, I’m contributing to the watering down of a genre I once found terrifying.’ In some sense, I was complicit in death metal losing its evilness, or whatever you want to call it. And Euronymous was furious about this.” - Dan Swanö (vocalist of Swedish death metal band Edge of Sanity), interviewed by Bardo Methodology @bardomethodology 🕯️

THORNDALE Gets Fire Power from Andy LaRocque (King Diamond) for First Single
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Yesterday, I listened to the debut album by Dutch heavies THORNDALE, 'Lightning Spawn' (2024), and thoroughly enjoyed these "Groove-Forged Riffs from the Lowlands." The record features tight songcraft, great pacing, dramatic vocals, killer guitar tone, and robust drumming -- all of it beautifully captured by Dan Swanö, who mixed and mastered.
Today, we're treating you to the first single from the six-track affair, and it features none other than guitarist Andy LaRocque of King Diamond with a killer solo!
Thorndale frontman Gus says, "It's been a wild ride crafting this album with these incredible musicians, paying homage to our idols." If you hear a touch of the familiar here and there, that's exactly what it is. Hints, reminders that there were Giants of Metal long ago, and that the fire of those forebears continues to burn bright in talented musicians today from the scene.
As for this track, the trio says:
In "Ain’t The End of My Rope," the relentless imagery of Greek fire and waves mirrors the overwhelming emotions of loss, revealing a deep reflection on the unavoidable challenges of Life and the heartache of irreplaceable departures.
That's quite a mouthful, and it speaks certainly to the passion this lot have put into this song, as well as the album. Dark stoner grooves with a touch of doom and infectious heavy metal vibes come together for a powerful sound on this track, with a lusty chorus that will be appealing to any fan of Black Sabbath or Candlemass.
Stay tuned to the band's social media pages (IG/FB) for word on adding this single to your collection, and preorders for the new album. Thorndale's Lightning Spawn releases February 23rd, 2024.
Give ear...

INFESTDEAD - Satanic Serenades 2xCD
Legendary Swedish vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/producer Dan Swanö is perhaps best known for his work with EDGE OF SANITY, NIGHTINGALE, BLOODBATH, and recently WITHERSCAPE. Active since the early '90s, his career runs much deeper than this revered quartet, having produced seemingly countless bands from across the metal spectrum (OPETH, DISSECTION, KATATONIA, ASPHYX to name just a few) as well as launching or taking part in side projects including MOONTOWER, ODYSSEY, PAN.THY.MONIUM or INFESTDEAD.
The latter formed in 1993 and released two albums – Hellfuck (1997) and Jesusatan (1999) – plus EP/split releases. From the debut EP Killing Christ, vocalist Dread (TORMENTED, ex-MARDUK) and Dan had only one goal in mind: to create classic US inspired death metal like DEICIDE and MORBID ANGEL. The result was astonishing and in its remastered fashion sounds even more convincing and is blessed by Swanö’s incredible songwriting talent. Even if it’s just plain and violent death metal, Mr Swanö turns everything he touches into amazing music, be it prog or unholy extreme metal!
Satanic Serenades is an official 40+ track anthology release of the entire INFESTDEAD catalog that now shall haunt the holy again!

MOONLIGHT SORCERY - Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle

ALL LIFE ENDS from Switzerland, founded in 2006, have always offered their listeners a mixture of pure, heavy, old-school death with influences of modern extreme metal and have since inspired metalheads who love uncompromising death metal with technical but also traditional influences with melodic parts and sophisticated guitar solos.
The release of their 2020 full-length debut "The Plague of Man" coincided with the beginning of the Covid pandemic, which meant that a planned tour through Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic had to be cancelled. However, the band were not idle during the pandemic and used the time to work on the successor "Miscreation", which is now available.
With a brute sound and extremely impressive artwork, "Miscreation", which was mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö, promises to be a real highlight for fans of the genre.

“I heard about the death threats going around. I also knew people who were said to have carried out all kinds of criminal acts in the name of black metal. Thanks to Tony (Särkkä)’s diligent networking, Finspång became a hub of sorts. I remember The Count from Burzum passing through with a car trunk full of weapons - supposedly on his way to murder someone in Stockholm. So yes, I definitely had some insight into what was going on. You know, this whole True Satanist Horde (TSH) thing happened just a few blocks from where I lived.” - Dan Swanö (vocalist of Swedish death metal band Edge of Sanity), interviewed by Bardo Methodology🕯️
