1994. Tales From The Thousand Lakes

is the second album by band Amorphis, it was Released July 12.  

It is a A concept album, the lyrics are based on the Finnish national epic, Kalevala. It was their first departure from the more aggressive death metal sound of their debut album to a more melodic death/doom metal sound, with more influence from early bands influential to doom metal like Black Sabbath and Pentagram. This album features a greater use of synthesizers and clean vocals than their previous release, which was devoid of both.

This was the first Amorphis album to feature Kasper Mårtenson on keyboards. The album was an influential release in the development of the melodic death metal and doom metal genres.

this album is a considerable expansion of their epic and melodic style. At this point, the band's sound is no longer death metal in a true sense. Tales From the Thousand Lakes finds Amorphis incorporating Finnish folk music, a full-time keyboard player, ‘clean’ vocal parts, and progressive rock influences into a style of metal better described as atmospheric and melodic folk-influenced doom/death metal, with the growled vocals of Tomi Koivusaari remaining the only real link to death metal.
