The World Library Association, a new national library organization that aims to compete with the Marxist-led American Library Association, launched Monday, according to a press release obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The ALA recently landed in hot water for hiring a new president, Emily Drabinski, who has repeatedly described herself as a "Marxist lesbian." The organization has also faced blowback for pushing for sexually explicit books to be stocked in public and school libraries despite parents' concerns regarding age-inappropriate material for children.
As a result of the controversy surrounding the ALA, Montana became the first state to cut ties with the organization earlier this month.
Montana Commissioner Tom Burnett argued, "Our oath of office and resulting duty to the Constitution forbids association with an organization led by a Marxist."
"Marxism stands in direct opposition to the principles of the Constitution of the United States," he continued. "It's fair to discuss and learn about Marxism, not to affiliate with Marxist-led organizations."
Conservative lawmakers in several other states have also pushed to withdraw from the ALA, citing its Marxist leadership and support of "explicit materials."
Last week, members of the Idaho Freedom Caucus expressed "significant concerns" about the ALA's new president, claiming that Drabinksi seeks to "undermine the West by eradicating the traditional family, natural sexual relationships, distinctions between sexes, and the orderly structures that accompany them."
"Her election raises issues about libraries' involvement in exposing children to explicit materials and injecting hard-left politics and sexuality into publicly funded libraries. With her election, we have concerns about libraries' adherence to their educational purpose and their responsible use of taxpayer funds," stated the Idaho Freedom Caucus.
Conservative lawmakers in Arizona, South Carolina, Texas, Wyoming, Georgia, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania recently applauded Montana's decision to leave the ALA and encouraged their public and school libraries to join the movement.
Dan Kleinman, the executive director of the World Library Association, told the DCNF that the new organization would help cover legal fees for individuals suing to remove sexually explicit books from public and school libraries.
"The World Library Association is going to be able to attract donations from big donors on the other side because somebody has to do something to give some kind of help to parents and communities, or else the nationwide effect of the harm done to children with this inappropriate material is going to be huge," Kleinman told the DCNF. "The World Library Association would like to provide some kind of counterbalance to this big group that has been pushing these inappropriate books that they have been for decades."
The new organization seeks to promote "information literacy and political neutrality."
Shawn McBreairty, a World Library Association board member, told the DCNF that the ALA has attempted to "normalize sexual materials."
"The World Library Association is going to help parents with an unbiased and conservative agenda and just get back to regular education, the basics of what we all used to think a library was when we were a kid," McBreairty stated.
The ALA did not respond to a request for comment, the DCNF reported.

Former OpenAI boss Sam Altman pictured at firm's HQ amid reports of return
Reuters
By Zoe Kleinman, technology editor, and Daniel Thomas, business reporter
BBC News
The ex-boss of leading artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has posted a photo of himself at its HQ, following reports he is set to return after being sacked on Friday.
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Sam Altman is pictured holding a guest ID pass and comments: “First and last time i ever wear one of these”.
The 38-year-old helped launch the firm which created the popular ChatGPT bot.
On Friday the board dismissed Mr Altman saying it had lost confidence in him.
Reports this weekend, however, have suggested investors and employees are pushing for Mr Altman to be reinstated.
According to tech news site The Information, Mr Altman and Greg Brockman – another co-founder who quit on Friday as the company’s president – were invited to the firm’s San Francisco headquarters for talks on Sunday.
The BBC has contacted OpenAI for comment.
AI boss Sam Altman ousted after board loses confidence
The extraordinary firing of an AI superstar
Mr Altman is seen as one of the most influential figures in the fast-growing generative AI space and his sacking sent shockwaves across the industry.
In a letter on Friday, the company’s board accused him of not being “consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities”.
The board did not specify what he is alleged to have not been candid about.
However, whatever the board was so alarmed about on Friday has perhaps been overtaken by the global reaction to its decision. There may also have been fears of Mr Altman setting up a rival company and taking OpenAI’s top talent with him.
Reports this weekend suggested his sacking had angered current and former employees who were worried it might affect an upcoming $86bn (£69bn; €79bn) share sale.
The firm’s venture capitalist backers and the tech giant Microsoft – which has a $10bn stake in OpenAI – have also called for his return, according to the FT.
Sources say there have been a couple of sleepless nights in Seattle, the headquarters of Microsoft, which has also integrated OpenAI’s technology into its applications.
PA Media
If Mr Altman does indeed return, some speculate he may demand the creation of a new board of directors.
Dan Ives from investment firm Wedbush Securities told BBC News he believes Mr Altman will be restored as OpenAI’s chief executive.
“The board clearly overplayed their hands. I would almost call it a coup attempt, in terms of trying to get Altman out. But this is going to backfire,” Mr Ives said.
“I would expect the board to be out in the next 24 hours and Altman to be back. He is the golden child of AI. That continues to be what Microsoft and other investors are focused on.”
OpenAI is widely seen to be a company at its peak, with lucrative investment pouring in, and ChatGPT – which was launched almost a year ago – is used by millions.
Mr Altman has been the face of the firm’s rise. More than that, he is seen by many as the face of the industry more widely.
He testified before a US Congressional hearing to discuss the opportunities and risks created by the new technology and also appeared at the world’s first AI Safety Summit in the UK at the beginning of November.
His ousting sparked an outpouring of support from Silicon Valley bosses, including former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt who called Mr Altman “a hero of mine” and said that he had “changed our collective world forever”.

What Baking Can Do (Jared x Reader
word count: 400
a/n: this is my first fic in a looong time so sorry if it sucks!!! or let me know if you want more???
“And you can have this ready today, right?” Mrs. Murphy asked.
“Absolutely”, you said, “it should only take a couple hours, if that.”
“That sounds great. Once I finish setting up Zoe’s birthday party I’ll be right back here to pick it up. Thank you again, and sorry for such short notice!”
“Anytime Mrs. Murphy! See you then.”
As soon as Zoe’s mom left the store, Jared grabbed you by the hand and pulled you into the closet. Before you could say anything, his lips were on yours. “Hold on just a sec. Can I ask what this is all about?’ you said. Your boyfriend was not the take charge type, so any show of dominance was out of the ordinary. “I wanted to try something new, be spontaneous. But if you don’t feel comfortable we can stop.” One thing that you especially appreciated about Jared was that he always put you first. “I’m fine with not stopping.” you winked. And just like that, you were back at it.
Jared’s hands trailed up and down your waist as you stuck yours in his hair. The make out began to get more intense, with his glasses barely staying on his face. You and Jared moved over to a table a couple feet away so you could sit. He entangled his hands in your hair and you wrapped your arms around his neck allowing the both of you to further the kiss. Jared’s tongue traced your lips, waiting for you to grant him entrance, When you did, Jared let out a satisfied whimper.
Just as things were starting to get more intense, the door to the storage closet began to open. “QUICK. Act natural!” Jared whisper-yelled, pushing you off of him. You stifled back a laugh as you smoothed out your hair, making it appear as if you hadn’t just been making out with someone.
“Hello, my wonderful mother! To what do we owe this wonderful visit?”
“Jared? Y/N? Did you get Mrs. Murphy her cake?” Jared’s mom asked.
“Shit.” you said in unison.
“Yall are lucky I’m always prepared for emergency situations.”
She pulled out a freshly baked cake just in time, with Mrs. Murph6 walking in seconds after.
“For future reference, making cakes should be priority number one, and then we deal with our unrequited teen angst.” you joked, pulling Jared in for a hug.
“Whatever you say.” He winked.

Next to Normal/Dear Evan Hansen parallels
17-year-old boy has a crush on a 16-year-old girl who plays an instrument
Said girl has a brother who dies
Brother’s death causes his father to become stoic and repressed and his mother to desperately grasp onto his memory and imagine a version of him who had a happy, fulfilling life
the mother can’t accept the reality of her son’s situation because she can’t handle the grief that comes with it
Girl is sick of her brother occupying every aspect of her family life and wants something to be about her for a change
she also doesn’t like how her parents deal with the problems surrounding her brother
she and the 17-year-old eventually start dating
long before this happens, the boy tries to kiss the girl at a bad time (if i could tell her/henry getting Stoned™)
it takes several weeks for one of them to let the other into their house
uses my favorite trope ever, which is when an event that is significant to the plot happens before the story actually starts and we don’t learn the details of it until much later because the main character either forgot about it or refuses to acknowledge that it happened
the dead character wants to be remembered
The main character attempts suicide but we don’t actually see them do it
suicide is a major theme in the story but it isn’t exactly the main focus
The main character takes meds to help with their mental illness but later decides to stop taking them
The dead character represents the main character’s mental illness
connor is the voice inside evan’s head and the source of his anxiety: “she’ll hate you. everyone will hate you. you’ll go right back to where you started. no friends, nobody, nothing, alone.”
gabe obviously represents diana’s bipolar disorder (i don’t think this requires an explanation)
both of them encourage the main character to make Bad Decisions
the dead character does drugs
“are you snorting coke?” “not at the moment”
“If I stop smoking drugs then everything might be alright”
Dysfunctional families
rebellious teens
someone feels invisible & there’s a whole song about it
characters who take drugs are either stoners or they take prescription drugs
directed by michael greif
small cast to make the story more intimate
had pre-broadway productions at arena stage in DC and second stage
asa somers was in it at one point
“catch me i’m falling”/evan fell out of a tree and no one came to get him
costumes seem simple and casual but they actually have a fuckton of symbolism
the dead character dresses similarly to whoever’s life he’s fucking with (evan and connor wearing matching sweatshirts, gabe wearing a shirt that’s the same color as whoever he’s trying to communicate with)
light & you will be found are really similar
has a lot of metaphors surrounding darkness and light, in which darkness represents depression and light is what pushes people to continue living
starts off with one person singing & encouraging others to have hope, then the entire cast gradually joins in
“out of the shadows, the morning is breaking... it’s filling up the empty and suddenly i see that all is new”/ “the wasted world we thought we knew, the light will make it look brand new”
“you will be found”/ “there will be light”
ultimately the message is to keep going, it gets better
has characters who outwardly look like they have their life together but are actually Suffering™ (dan, alana, jared) and mentally ill characters who do not at all look like they have their life together (diana, evan, natalie)
painfully relatable
obc member named jennifer
someone from pitch perfect was in it at some point (ben platt is self-explanatory; skylar astin was in a workshop as henry in 2007)
a music box is used for symbolism in next to normal. dear evan hansen is in the music box theater. coincidence? i think not
no but seriously if n2n ever gets revived it needs to be in the music box theater because puns
Imagine the DEH cast in next to normal
ben platt as henry, mike faist as gabe, laura dreyfuss or kristolyn lloyd as natalie, michael park as dan, jennifer laura thompson or rachel bay jones as diana
weather metaphors (cloudy skies in n2n, sunlight in deh)
teen girl says fuck at a family meal, gets scolded by a parent, and talks back
Zoe: fuck you
Cynthia: I don’t need you picking at your brother right now, that is not constructive
Zoe: are you kidding
Natalie: this is fucked
Dan: language
Natalie: Fuck this
one can empathize with all the characters but would also probably fight a lot of them if they had the chance
“everything else goes away”/ “the rest of the world falls away”
won tony awards for best score and orchestrations
There’s probably a lot more so feel free to add on if I forgot anything.
