Crown Prince Frederik’s two-day visit to Niger has come to an end. On the 24th, he was received by the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, in the Presidential Palace in the capital Niamey. On the 25th, His Royal Highness visited two Danish-supported schools in the capital Niamey. He was accompanied by the Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jorgensen and the purpose of the visit revolved around the fight for the climate.

Denmark to donate $22 million to Brazil's Amazon Fund to fight deforestation

Denmark will donate 150 million Danish crowns ($21.9 million) to Brazil's Amazon Fund to fight deforestation, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy, Dan Jorgensen, announced on Tuesday with his Brazilian counterpart.

Jorgensen and Brazil's Environment Minister Marina Silva said in a joint statement that climate change has an impact on forests, local communities and Indigenous peoples that need support to manage forests in sustainable way and promote trade in sustainably produced forest products.

The Amazon Fund was created in 2008 to raise donations to combat deforestation and promote preservation of the world's largest tropical rainforest, with Norway providing an initial $1 billion. Germany has contributed to the fund, and more recently Britain and the European Union, while the United States plans to contribute $500 million over five years.

Slovakia could suspend aid to Ukraine in response to gas transit halt

Slovakia was considering measures against Ukraine, including suspension of aid, if no solution was found to halt the transit of Russian gas, Prime Minister Robert Fico said.

Fico announced the possible measures on Thursday after talks with EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen. The Slovak leader also accused Kyiv of damaging his country by failing to renew a gas transit agreement with Moscow.

In particular, he threatened to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine and to use his veto power in the European Union over Ukraine issues. He said the government did not want to raise tensions but would consider action if a solution to halt gas transit was not found.

Stopping gas supplies through Ukraine would cost Slovakia €500 million ($516 million) in transit fees and €1 billion in higher gas prices. Russian gas exports stopped on 1 January when the transit contract expired.

Kyiv refused to renegotiate any deal that could generate revenue allegedly used to finance Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Slovakia made an unsuccessful attempt to extend the transit agreement last year. However, Fico stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had ruined the chances of reaching a deal at an EU summit in December.

The EU plans to end Russian fuel ties for good, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen has told US media.

Let’s take a look at how abandoning Russian energy supplies has already ridden roughshod over the bloc.

EU countries had to pay €185 billion ($204 billion) extra on natural gas over the past 20 months after cutting themselves off from cheap Russian pipeline gas.

Household electricity prices increased in ten EU countries in the first half of 2024, compared with the first half of last year. The highest price tags were registered in Germany (€0.3951 per kilowatt-hour [KWh]), Ireland (€0.3736), Denmark (€0.37078) and the Czech Republic (€0.3381).

Last year saw average household electricity prices in 22 EU members increase to €28.9 ($30.3) per 100kWh – up from €25.3 ($26.5) per 100kWh for the same period in 2022. “These prices were the highest recorded by Eurostat,” per the statistical agency.

Europe’s benchmark natural gas prices surged last month to the highest since November 2023, increasing to €45.40 ($47.83) per MWh.

In 2023, Latvia and Romania saw the highest jumps in gas prices, jumping 139% and 134%, respectively. In total, price tags increased in 20 EU members at the time.

The average British household spent £1,000 ($1,202) on wholesale gas over the past 12 months - £800 ($1011) more than in a typical year.

In a sign of their “energy poverty”, the number of Europeans “unable to keep their homes adequately warm” has surged over the past several years, standing at 6.9%, 9.3% and 10.6% in 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively. Information is based on estimates from Eurostat, the European Commission, OilPrice.com and the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit non-profit organization.
