Storia Di Musica #323 - Devotchka, A Mad & Faithfull Telling, 2008

Il mese di Aprile ha visto come protagonisti dei dischi sulla cui copertina ci sono una o più mani (l’avevate capito, lo so). Aggiungo che sono dischi di musica indipendente degli anni 2000, definizione che accompagna lavori prodotti e distribuiti da piccole etichette musicali che non fanno parte di grandi agglomerati di industria multimediale. È stato un viaggio che mi ha fatto scoprire molte band che conoscevo poco o non conoscevo affatto, ed è sempre una bellissima esperienza lo scoprire. Concludiamo questo percorso con una band che si forma a Denver, verso la fine degli anni ’90, con due caratteristiche peculiari: suonano un punk gitano ricchissimo di richiami alla cultura gipsy europea (e non solo), l’altro è la scelta del nome. Si chiamano infatti DeVotchKa, traslitterazione nel nostro alfabeto di девочка, che in russo vuol dire ragazza. La band è formata da ottimi polistrumentisti: Nick Urata, che canta e suona il theremin, la chitarra, il bouzouki, spesso il pianoforte e occasionalmente anche la tromba; Tom Hagerman suona il violino e la fisarmonica; Jeanie Schroder, cantante e suonatrice di bassotuba, contrabbasso e flauto; chiude il gruppo Shawn King, percussioni e spesso tromba aggiunta. Iniziano come band di accompagnamento agli spettacoli di burlesque della regina del genere, Dita Von Theese. Grazie alla crescente notorietà di Dita, girano quasi tutti gli Stati Uniti, divenendo uno dei punti forti dello show. Durante le serate, vendono dei dischi autoprodotti: nel 2004 una loro canzone, How It Ends, entra a far parte della colonna sonora del bel film Ogni Cosa è Illuminata (film tratto dall'omonimo romanzo di Jonathan Safran Foer diretto da Liev Schreiber con Elijah Wood e Eugene Hütz, frontman dei Gogol Bordello che furono il gruppo apripista del genere punk gypsy). Dopo una applauditissima performance al Festival di Bonnaroo del 2006, iniziano ad essere richiesti anche oltre il circuito underground. Una mano gliela dà anche Win Butler degli Arcade Fire: propone loro di fare un Ep di Cover, tra cui The Last Beat Of My Heart di Siouxsie And The Banshees, Somethin' Stupid di Frank e Nancy Sinatra e addirittura Venus In Furs dei Velvet Underground, Ep che si chiama Curse Your Little Heart. Questo disco verrà notato da Jonathan Dayton e Valerie Faris che chiamano i DeVotchKa a scrivere la colonna sonora del loro film, Little Miss Sunshine, lavoro per cui ricevono persino una nomination ai Grammy 2006 come Miglior Colonna Sonora originale. È la svolta finale.

Nel 2008 esce il disco di oggi, A Mad & Faithful Telling: prodotto dalla band con Craig Schumacher (che ha lavorato con i Calexico, Giant Sand, Amos Lee tra gli altri) è un po’ il riassunto del loro modo di fare musica. Una musica divertente e divertita, che mischia folk, tradizioni gitane, Sudamerica e Europa, con ganci pop davvero notevoli. Ai quattro si aggiunge una corposa sezione fiati e di archi e un piccolo coro. Basso Profundo è un viaggio nella musica balcanica che qualche anno prima è esplosa nell’ambito world (con i film di Kusturica e la musica di Goran Bregović) dall’andamento baldanzoso e ritmico. C’è la musica mariachi in Along The Way, soprattutto nei fiati. L’intro da carillon di The Clockwise Witness è preludio ad un grande brano, dalle ondeggianti parti musicali, un piccolo gioiello dove la voce di Urata fa la sua bella figura. Head Honcho e Undone (dalla bellissima chitarra che sa di musiche ispaniche) sanno di omaggio agli spaghetti western, e potrebbero fare da colonna sonora a qualche scena dei film di Quentin Tarantino. Translitterator è il brano più pop, anche qui con un intro da musica di orchestrina giocattolo, una musica che fa pensare ai circhi, ai teatri delle marionette. Ci sono due splendidi strumentali: Comrade Z, che unisce i fiati mariachi con i ritmi gitani e Strizzalo, divertente parodia di un valzer italiano, da sagra di paese, con la fisarmonica, il basso tuba e dei romantici violini (spesso hanno usato l’italiano per le loro composizioni, uno dei loro primi dischi si chiama Una Volta). New World, una malinconica ballata moderna, chiude il disco, e fu usata in una puntata della serie Tv Weeds. Il disco è viaggio musicale tra circhi di frontiera, feste messicane, passeggiate in città dell’Europa dell’Est e paesaggi italiani. Sarà in top ten della Heatseekers di Billboard e diventerà il loro più grande successo. Successo che li porterà a suonare pure in Europa, addirittura come apertura dei concerti di grandi band, come i Muse.

Pubblicheranno nel 2009 la colonna sonora del film I Love You Phillip Morris (black comedy con Jim Carrey e Ewan McGregor) e altri dischi, l'ultimo del 2018 This Night Falls Forever, continuando nel frattempo a portare in giro la loro musica scanzonata, potenzialmente irresistibile anche per la cura e le qualità musicali dei musicisti.

In Izzy’s younger years, his most well known act was to “Babushka” by Kate Bush. He does do it again when he returns to performing and it is just as sensual.

Frenchie will usually play songs he comes up with on his own as something of an interlude to performances, but he will also play a song by Dixon Dallas.

Wee John as Calypso has a semi-iconic number that ends up filmed for social media, which blows up the notoriety of The Revenge. He sings “Pretty Lavinia” by American Murder Song and much of the rest of the “crew” contributes as the chorus.

Ed’s performances are often to Amy Winehouse songs. Yes, he does perform “Back to Black” when Stede seemingly goes back to Mary, and it’s super emotionally poignant and unsettling, why do you ask?

Stede loves the art of burlesque but initially sucks at it. Yes, Ed and Izzy do help him a lot. Yes, they do fuck about it.

Jim’s performances are more typically daring acts involving leather and knife play rather than traditional burlesque, but it is still mad sexy. Oluwande and Archie both occasionally feature in their act.

*remembers the time I saw a burlesque performer in chainmail lingerie dancing and fire-eating to “Joan of Arc” by Arcade Fire and tries to be normal* That’s Zheng.

Izzy is classically trained in ballet and fencing which he employs in his performances. Yes, this ties into body issues with his leg.

The “capture by the English” is the business owners association throwing down about a queer burlesque club. Blackbeard’s Evil Girl Era is him holding onto The Revenge after Stede put him down as a partial owner and he’s running the place into the ground. I want CHAOS.

South Dallas Bank.

That was the target you set for yourself. It was close by to where you initially landed and with the money you'd get, all you had to do was lay low and then whenever the cops loosen up their search, you would take that opportunity to high tail it either out of Dallas or out of Texas all together for a bit.

Regardless of what the early 60s didn't have, you still needed to do this right. No room for error.

First thing's first: you needed to find somewhere to lay low. You couldn't really run around with a bunch of cash.

So you found a motel. Room was pretty cheap, running about 11 bucks. So between the meal you got and that, you REALLY needed this plan to work.

Luckily, the guy that owned the place didn't ask questions. Seemingly only wanted to be left alone to watch his new TV and only be disturbed when it was for emergencies.

"Perfectly fine with me." You told him with a smile.

He didn't flash one back.

Next on the agenda: a disguise.

Now this was the first ACTUAL act of thievery. You simply found some poor dude's long coat and hat that was hanging out to dry. At another house, someone carelessly left their door unlocked, so you stole their shades and scarf.

Thus giving you a nice classic femme fatale looking disguise.

You had everything you needed. Now, it was time to act. It all needed to go off without a hitch.

And it did.

Because no one was prepared for what happened that day.

It was a little on the hotter side for everyone in the bank looking to make deposits and withdrawals. And it seemed like the bank's central AC wasn't working well as everyone was fanning themselves in intervals. All of them desperate to make this day go by smoothly so they can get into places that HAD their ACs working today.

Even the security was halfway out of it due to the heat. This was the perfect time to strike.

All of the careful planning and still: you wanted to make it a show.

So you busted through the doors like a cowboy making his entrance into a saloon. And just like those movies, everyone stopped what they were doing to look at you.

You had only one thought on your mind when you woke up today and chose mild violence.

You were going to more akin to a gentlemen thief.

Sure this current approach was a bit rough but you didn't really have time for patience and calling cards. Plus, you were trying to make this a one time thing.

Surely, you'll find something to keep you afloat afterwards. Something..."legit".

"Ladies, gentlewoman, and everyone secretly in between, this bank is now being robbed! Now you will have to bare with me because while this isn't my first experience with a bank robbery, this is the first time I've been on the robbing side and if you all cooperate, everyone can go home relatively unscathed."

There was a long pause before a few people started giggling...rude. One of the senior tellers caught the attention of one of the guards, who pretty much tuned you out. With a condescending snap of his fingers, the teller instructed the guard to throw you out as everyone else proceeded to get back to what they were doing.

The guard sighed. Groggily getting up from his sit to begin walking over to you.

You smirked. "I was hoping something like this would happen. Allow me to show you how series this is."

You snapped for your fingers pointing in the direction of the security guard. The speed of a bright white light zooting past at a high speed caught everyone's attention as you went from the entrance doors to right behind the guard.

Screams erupted from a few of the women in the room. Just as you had hoped, fear and curiosity kept everyone in place. This was a time before you and the others existed. There were no marketable supplements to talk about your power. There was no way for any of these people to know what else you could do.

In their minds, if you could get from point A to point B with the quickness of a flash on a camera then what else could you do?

You wrapped an arm around the neck of the guard, applying a pressure that lowkey put the fear of god of him because he was a burly man with a 60s mindset. No woman, no matter her size, should be able to render him useless.

But this was the case. You were more experienced in a fight, you had to be. You knew exactly what to do to break down an opponent that would use their body as their biggest strength.

Everyone looked on in horror as the guard's flailing arms did nothing to aid him and he slowly loss consciousness and fell to the reflective marble floor.

You made a display of dusting your hands off before putting your hands on your hips and looking at the senior teller who gawked at you in fear and a little bit of offense which was funny.

"Anyone else you want me to choke out or do you want to take me to the money? Because frankly that took a lot out of me and if I have to fight some more..." you trailed off as you slowly raised your hands and began emitting soft white glows. "it's gonna get very bloody and I think so many people wanna go today."

Out of the corner of your eye, you saw a few people glance at the door.

"And anyone who decides to leave, just know that I DO have the means to find you and even if you go to the cops, they won't protect you...from me."

You had roughly placed your hand on the back of the unconscious guard's chair. This time, the glow of your hand burned bright and when you lifted it, everyone shared a series of audible shocks at the sight of a piece of the chair being burnt to the point of almost melting.

"Now imagine that...but its your face." You spoke with an unsettling cheerfulness.

Then you strode over to the senior teller's window, casually leaning on the counter with a teasing knock on the window and sweetly sickening smirk. "So...about that cash..."

To say everyone was still frozen in fear by the time you waltzed out with two duffle bags filled with money and comedically, the straps were on your arms in the same way shopping bags would be positioned on the arms of happy shopping valley girl.

You had made a nice showing of your power which resulted in no one calling the police until AFTER you were gone. Of course, the police didn't believe them until they saw some of the security footage and they couldn't even believe their eyes so much that they never realized that they really didn't get a good look at you. Neither did any of the people in the building at the time.

The fear and curiosity you had banked on literally came in clutch for baby's very first bank robbery.

You laid low for a few days before you decided to leave Dallas, sure that the cops has lessened their search because they really didn't want to think about what to do with someone that could burn things to that degree with their hands.

You did surprise yourself though.

As you were listening to the newscast and icing your hands. You had the thought of "why didn't I think of burning things sooner" because...yeah why wouldn't someone who's power is light based be able to burn something.

It's not like your light powers were some heaven sent thing...probably.

You would mark this down for later. Not that you were planning on doing this again...YOU WEREN'T. This money was just what you needed to get on your feet.

This was a one...time...thing.

Stand up comedian, attrice, musicista e attivista pluripremiata costantemente impegnata per l’empowerment femminile, i diritti delle persone lgbtq+ e delle minoranze etniche asiatiche.

Candidata a cinque Grammy e a un Emmy Award, viene chiamata la Santa patrona degli outsider, perché, da sempre, parla per coloro che non hanno voce incoraggiando il cambiamento.

Nei suoi spettacoli affronta, con intelligenza e grande ironia temi politici e sociali, parla di droghe, disturbi alimentari, rapporti malati, body shaming, razzismo, sessismo e ogni forma di discriminazione.

Nel 2017, la rivista Rolling Stone l’ha annoverata tra le 50 migliori attrici comiche, definendola “divertente, sessualmente positiva, femminista e attivista LGBT, un esempio che le giovani generazioni guardano con ammirazione“.

Nata a San Francisco, il 5 dicembre 1968 da genitori sudcoreani che gestivano una libreria.

A scuola è stata vittima di bullismo ed è stata più volte molestata sessualmente da bambina e adolescente.

Si è rifugiata nella comicità per superare le sopraffazioni della vita quotidiana e dire ciò che pensava.

A Los Angeles nei primi anni ’90, ha fatto il botto con le sue sezioni dissacranti e sfrontate con cui si è esibita, prima in club e campus universitari e poi in televisione.

Nel 1993 ha vinto l’American Comedy Award.

Nel 1994 è stata produttrice esecutiva di una innovativa e controversa sitcom della ABC, All-American Girl, che ha dovuto lasciare perché le era stato chiesto di smorzare i toni, ritenuti non adatti a un pubblico televisivo.

Il suo monologo del 1999 I’m The One That I Want, è diventato un libro best-seller e un film.

Nel 2001 ha lanciato Notorious CHO, fortunato tour nazionale culminato in un concerto sold-out alla Carnegie Hall, anche questo diventato un film che il New York Times aveva definito brillante.

Di gran successo sono stati i tour successivi: Revolution da cui è stato tratto un disco nominato ai Grammy Awards come miglior album comico del 2003 e Assassin.

Con Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry e la band Erasure, nel 2007, ha portato in giro True Colors, tour per sostenere la Human Rights Campaign.

Dopo tanti live in giro per gli Stati Uniti, anche con The Sensuous Woman, spettacolo di varietà con burlesque e vaudeville, nel 2008, è tornata in televisione con la serie The Cho Show.

È uscita fuori dai confini per debuttare in Australia con Beautiful che esplora i retroscena del mondo della bellezza e di come il marketing che la promuove cerchi di plasmare la nostra visione del mondo.

Nel 2009, ha avuto, per sei stagioni, un ruolo da protagonista nella serie tv Drop Dead Diva.

L’anno seguente è stata concorrente a Dancing with the Stars dove si è esibita indossando un abito arcobaleno a sostegno della comunità lgbtq+ per sensibilizzare sull’alto tasso di suicidi giovanili a causa di bullismo e omotransfobia.

Nel 2010 ha ottenuto la seconda nomination ai Grammy per l’album Cho Dependent a cui hanno collaborato big della musica come Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird, Grant Lee Phillips, Tegan & Sara, Ben Lee, per citare qualche nome. Anche di questo è stato tratto un film dal live di Atlanta.

MOTHER è il suo spettacolo di cabaret che ha girato Europa e Stati Uniti in cui ha offerto uno sguardo non convenzionale sulla maternità e su come sono rappresentate le figure materne e le donne forti nella cultura queer.

Ha ricevuto una nomination agli Emmy come miglior attrice ospite in 30 Rock, dove ha interpretato Kim Jong II.

Successivamente, ha prodotto PSYCHO, spettacolo sulla follia e la rabbia che prova per ciò che accade nel mondo, dalla brutalità della polizia, al razzismo, alla crescente ondata di violenza contro le donne.

Il suo secondo album in studio American Myth, le è valso un’altra nomination ai Grammy per il miglior album comico.

Oltre a diversi impegni al cinema e in televisione, ha prestato la sua voce in diversi film d’animazione, ha lanciato un suo podcast The Margaret Cho, in cui la prima parte è una chiacchierata con un’amica famosa che il pubblico già conosce e la seconda parte con un’artista emergente che potrebbe non essere ancora nota.

Si è spesa per la tutela dell’ambiente e degli animali, contro la pena di morte e contro ogni forma di privazione delle libertà.

Margaret Cho è un fiume in piena, è stata censurata, minacciata, oscurata, ma, instancabile, continua a provocare e far sentire la sua voce contro ogni sopruso e in favore di chi non trova ascolto e attenzione.

Il grande weekend di Frontemare Rimini: 30/08 Burlesque, 31/08 Voglio Tornare Negli Anni 90', 01/09 Apericena Latino 

Nell'ultima settimana di agosto 2024, il mese più caldo per l'intrattenimento estivo, il Frontemare Rimini non si ferma ed è pronto a proporre una nuova line up di eventi. 

Venerdì 30 agosto al Top Club Show Dinner, il venerdì notte del Frontemare, la serata sarà "Burlesque", che avrà come guest l'artista Valentina Tafferini. La cena inizierà alle ore 21.00, che a scelta del cliente, sarà servita (con menù di carne o di pesce rinnovato con nuove prelibatezze culinarie) oppure a buffet. Durante lo show dinner il pubblico verrà rapito dalla live performance dell'ospite che creerà un'atmosfera magica. Dalle ore 23.30 avrà inizio la serata disco con i dj set in successione di Max Monti e Gianni Morri accompagnati dalla voce di Carlotta Savorelli. Quest'ultima è una vocalist di successo, nonchè personaggio televisivo in quanto ha partecipato al celebre programma televisivo "Uomini e Donne" condotto da Maria De Filippi. 

Sabato 31 agosto, torna il format "Voglio Tornare Negli Anni '90". Uno show unico che sta conquistando il cuore del pubblico di tutta Italia.  Il party avrà inizio alle 20:30 con la cena che, a scelta del cliente, sarà servita (con menù di carne o di pesce rinnovato con nuove prelibatezze culinarie) oppure a buffet. Dalle 22:30, i riflettori si accenderanno sul palco con il dj set degli ospiti della serata che faranno ballare tutti fino a tarda notte con tutte le hit degli anni '90. 

Domenica 1 settembre l'apericena latina del Frontemare accoglierà tutti gli amanti della musica latinoamericana. 

Dalle ore 19:00 avrà inizio l'apericena con buffet illimitato e drink incluso. Dalle 20:30 il dj Mauro Catalini assieme alla travolgente animazione dello staff UrbanItaly inizieranno a scaldare la pista con la più bella musica su cui ballare salsa, bachata, reggaeton… e tanto altro! 

Mauro Catalini, nato a Trelew provincia del Chubut della Repubblica Argentina inizia a lavorare con la musica Latina nel 1990, come insegnante di ballo, per poi continuare come DJ e organizzatore di eventi e serate dal 1991 ad oggi. Vanta  tantissime collaborazioni con cantanti di fama mondiale, nel 2014 ha aperto il concerto di Romeo Santos e nel 2016 quello di Marc Anthony.
