A sick tribute appeared outside the New York City hotel where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down by an assassin on Wednesday.
A balloon with a sign taped to it reading 'CEO DOWN' over the image of a smiling star and party poppers was found outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan after Thompson, 50, was gunned down there Wednesday morning.
The balloon was spotted as many Americans have joked about the CEO's death due to his company's track record of rejecting medical claims.

how dare adaptations make dracula/mina the ship when first of all, jonathan is the obvious gothic heroine of the book, and second of all mina would put the fear of God in dracula for touching her man. she proposed to him as soon as he woke up from his coma and MARRIED him while he was in the sick bed of a catholic hospital, this girl is Not Normal either

Welcome to The Journey to the West (西游记) Daily!
You are about to beging a reading journey to get the hidden Buddhist texts accompanied by the monk Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Sha Wujing, Zhu Bajie and Bai Long Ma.
To beging this journey you must subscribe to the newsletter, which you will find at https://journeytothewestdaily.substack.com/. You wil receive your first email this week, welcoming you and sharing information about what's to come and what I will include in the emails.
However, beforehand I want to tell you already that you won't receive a daily email, despite the name of the newsletter. The chapters are dense and full of references to folklore or religion references that you might be unfamiliar with, so you will receive an email every 2 or 3 days maximum.
If this is the first time that you hear about this newsletter and you don't know what Journey to the West is...
The classical Chinese novel Journey to the West is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who traveled to the "Western Regions" (Central Asia and India) to obtain Buddhist sūtras (sacred texts) and returned after many trials and much suffering. Gautama Buddha gives this task to the monk, whose name in the novel is Tang Sanzang, and provides him with three protectors who agree to help him as an atonement for their sins. These disciples are the Monkey King, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, together with a dragon prince who acts as the monk's steed, a white horse. The group of pilgrims journey towards enlightenment by the power and virtue of cooperation.
The novel is perfect for the epistolary format, since it's is divided in different and disconnected adventures, so you don't have to always remember what happened in the previous chapter to read the next!
We'll be reading Anthony C. Yu's translation since it is the first unabridged version that we have available in English. It is about 100 chapters long.
As I said, you will receive a first email as soon as you subscribe and an introductory email in a few days. Please, share this post so more people can read along. Use the hashtag #jttwdaily if you want to comment your impressions. I'll share the most important dates soon.
May the Buddha help you in your endeavours.

Joining in with #DraculaDaily for the first time, having not read the book since being a teenager, it's fascinating how the story feels so different as an adult.
Teenage Me read a classic book about scary vampires. Adult Me is very much reading a story about an abusive relationship.
May 28th/30th where Jonathan's desperate letters home are discovered and burned right in front of him (before he is locked in the library while the rest of his writing material and his travelling clothes are confiscated) is far more frightening to me than the vampire imagery.
Dracula is monstrous in a very human way, deliberately and blatantly making it very clear who has the power. Something about the "smoothness" and "calm" and "cheefulness" he's described with (as he demonstrates the destruction of the cries for help) is really chilling and ominous.
And the format of reading each extract on the date they're set means the reveal of the missing belongings hits hard - although we may have expected it, we learn it for certain along with Jonathan.
At least we have Mina, Lucy and The Suitor Trio as relief in between the increasingly panicked updates from the castle.

reading Dracula has permanently altered my brain. i can never see count dracula as a generic character anymore. he isn't an ooky spooky horror monster he's the old bitch that imprisoned my boy johnny in his shitass castle and killed my beloved lucy and quincey. abraham van helsing isn't synonymous with badass monster hunters he's a 50-year-old dutch doctor who talks funny. i see things and think oh wow this is just like my favorite characters from my book that was written 126 years ago.
