Evan orders four shots of both types for now and then turns back his full attention on the brunette finally deciding to sit near him and not just stay, “so what should I call you, big guy? Or do you prefer pet names I use?” 

“Tommy,” the man, Tommy, licks his lip, definitely looking a little tense, so that Evan wants to get on his knees already and blow him so good he will lose all this tension. Later, he stops himself. I'll do it later and he will see the god himself, while coming. “You can call me Tommy.”

That guy knows how to fight dirty. Trust me. He's scrappy.” “Scrappy, huh?” Buck turns back to the pot and stirs it again. “Hey, come taste this?” He holds out a spoon. Tommy joins him at the stove, standing far closer than necessary, almost flush against Buck's back as he takes the spoon in his mouth, chews, and swallows. “Delicious,” he announces. “Is that Bobby's Chili?”  Buck nods. "Yup!" “Man, he was always so secretive about that!” Tommy complains. “How'd you talk him into sharing?” “Pays to be the favorite, I guess!” Buck preens. “So, what? Eddie suddenly decided to go all white knight protecting my virtue now I'm dating a guy?” He asks, steering the conversion back around. Tommy leans against the countertop beside Buck. “Nah, nothing like that. He just said that… He reminded me, forcibly, that you're a good guy, and I should probably refrain from hurting you, if I can help it.” Privately, a part of Buck glows at the knowledge that Eddie did that for him, even while he plans to rip him a new one for interfering. “I should clarify, Evan. I'm not… I’ve mentioned Victor, right? My ex?” Buck nods, turning to face Tommy in order to give this his full attention. “He sort of… did a number on me. Meeting you, doing… this, it's great. I'm just not…” “You're not ready for something serious,” Buck realizes. Tommy nods. “But, what we've been doing so far…?” “Is great! The dates, the, uh… other stuff, all amazing, but—” “You just don't want anything more serious than that.” “Exactly. If that's a deal-breaker, I can—” “No!” Buck rushes, putting a hand on Tommy's chest. “I mean, this is good for me too. Takes some of the pressure off, actually.” Tommy visibly relaxes, and Buck takes a moment to turn down the heat on the stove, leaning further into his space. “You said you were a relationship guy,” Tommy says, clearly wanting to make a hundred percent sure. Buck does him the courtesy of taking a moment to consider his answer. “I used to think I was. I thought my options were either ‘serious relationship’ or ‘meaningless sex that left me feeling like crap’.” He steps closer, close enough that he can feel Tommy's breath ghost across his skin. “But lately I've been discovering the joys of things being… somewhere on a spectrum. Keeping things fluid.” “Yeah?” Tommy asks, moving even closer. They might as well be kissing now, but they aren't quite, just a hair between them. “Yeah,” Buck repeats. “Though,” he adds. “For the sake of clarity. When you say other stuff, is that referring to the flying lessons you still owe me, or—” Buck pulls away just a fraction, just enough to allow Tommy the opportunity to reach out and keep him there, pulling him back into a dizzying kiss.

That’s the first thing going through his mind as Tommy kisses him. It’s like- it’s like a piece of the puzzle finally sliding into place, after years and years of searching, looking for something to fill that space with, that feeling of something being missing. It’s almost weird, really, how easy it feels, how he’s more relieved than freaked out. Because this- oh, this makes so much sense. He’s into guys. He’s been into guys. And right now, at this moment, he’s into Tommy. 

Holy shit, he’s into Tommy.

Buck’s mind has been a whirlwind of chaos and confusion and frustration for days, but now, when Tommy kisses him, it all silences. Just to start anew as they part, butterflies in his stomach so intense he feels like he might float, as a slow smile spreads across his face when Tommy pulls away. 

This is the part of himself he’s been looking for, he’s been denying himself, he’s been silencing for so long. He doesn’t know why now, why Tommy, what it all means and where it’s leading. But he knows that now he feels almost... complete, feels like himself, feels at ease. Feels like Buck.

He feels giddy when Tommy asks him out, and finds that as soon as the door closes behind him, Buck already can’t wait to see him again. Jesus, he has a crush. He’s a grown man in his thirties, just now finding out he’s into guys, and he has a goddamn crush on a guy, and that’s why he’s been acting like a teenager. It makes so much sense now, and Buck feels- well, he’s embarrassed because of his idiotic behavior, and guilty for maiming his best friend, but most of all he just feels relieved. Because he knows now, knows why he’s been so bent out of shape about this whole situation, and can put a name to those feelings.  It’s like a huge weight has been lifted off his chest, that he didn’t even know was there.

Eddie works his jaw in thought. He wracks his brain, trying to think of his first serious crush. That friend from highschool comes to mind, but he immediately skips over him to Shannon. Before her, there really wasn't anyone. He remembers his friends fawning over Leticia Montes in third grade. He didn't understand the draw. They didn't know her very well; she was in fourth grade. Eddie didn't know a thing about her. He supposes her dark curls and blue eyes were pretty, but there wasn't anything beyond that. There was a boy in sixth grade his friend Mary was practically in love with that, objectively speaking, was attractive. Eddie still didn't get it. Whenever his friends asked him who he liked, he'd think up the most well known heartthrob as his answer. Unfortunately, he had more than a few friends who would proceed to try and set them up. The refusals became degrading after a while. Eventually, he just stopped answering them. He lost those friends, but he didn't feel all that bad about it.

Eddie is extremely entertained by this meet and greet , much more than he expected. After the initial shock of Evan Buckley he’d settled back to watch the man. Names have been guessed and now the children start to shuffle into groups around the table for their first activity. It’s obvious they’re all completely charmed by their favourite author and it's hardly any time since he came into the room. Eddie can hardly blame them, personally he can’t seem to take his eyes off the man. He doesn’t know what to think, or maybe he does but  he’s just not letting himself think it. 

It’s been a very long time since Eddie has felt drawn to someone like he does right now. First the encounter in the hallway and now this. How’s he supposed to feel anything but fascinated? The man is ….. well, he’s somehow else and Eddie desperately wants to get to know him more so safe and hidden at the back of the room he lets himself look and tries to stop his heartbeat from racing quite so fast with some calming breaths.

So this is E Buckley, Evan, or perhaps it’s Buck. Whatever name he goes by he has the children eating out of his hand. He’s all happy smiles and enthusiasm as he moves around talking to them. The word puppy comes to mind as Eddie watches, already feeling far too fond of this stranger.

Eddie's background is a photo Buck didn't even know existed, of him and Chris passed out on the couch together, Christopher's head against Buck's chest and Buck's head lolling against the back of the couch. He can remember the day it was taken - when he and Chris were allowed to stay up past Christopher's bedtime playing video games and neither of them made it past midnight before Eddie found them like this.

Eddie chuckles from the thought, with wet eyes, “he was joking, by the way, sweetheart. Your daddy will never make you do anything you don’t want to. And will never punish you for something that just can't be your fault. He loves you anyway. The way you are. And no matter what your eyes’ color is gonna be anyway it will be perfect like you already are. Perfect little princess .” 

He strokes little round cheek, leaving a light kiss there, trying hard not to cry. He should be stronger for his friends, for Tommy, for Sky, for Buck. He should be the rock of the family right now. Because Tommy, Sky and Buck need him. Buck was protector of him and Chris for a lot of time, it’s Eddie’s time to be protector of Buck’s family. Be the best godfather ever possible. 

“I know we should have met not like that,” Eddie whispers through a lump in the throat, “your daddy and papa should have introduced you to me officially, letting me hold you after they will take you together from the hospital. But, unfortunately, your daddy's dumb luck struck again, but,” Eddie lets the most beautiful baby girl clutch his finger in a firm grip. He grins at this, kissing her hand like a true princess, “your daddy is a fighter. The strongest man I know. He will fight to get back to you and your papa. And till then I will be here to make sure your papa takes care of himself. Because I know he will take the best care of you. But not himself.”

AUgust announcement!

Gonna be posting a chapter of this fic every day for the month of August. It's a little different from my usual AU-gust projects in that I'm aiming for all of my prompt fills to be part of one over-arching story. I am SUPER excited to start sharing!

Title: Where there's smoke

Summary:

His eyelids are heavy. His lungs ache. The smoke is dense and thick, slowly suffocating him. Eddie feels himself drift as Buck’s voice penetrates the smoke, cuts through the fog in his brain. “Eddie, stay with me. Stay with me, Eds.” Eddie wants to stay. He wants to open his eyes and see Buck. He doesn’t want to leave. But he’s so tired, and sleep is calling him. Maybe it will be okay. Maybe his dreams will be sweet. Maybe there’ll be peace, there. And maybe, if he just rests for a little while, he’ll be able to find his way back.

Buck’s been stood up by his date and the waitress keeps asking if he’s ready to order but he keeps asking for more time hoping that his date is just late. People are starting to look at him with those apologetic looks like they know and Buck starts to feel worse and worse about the whole situation but as he decides to just get up and leave, this guy he’s never seen sits down explaining loudly “sorry i’m so late, babe, traffic is crazy right now.” and he quietly adds, “i’m Eddie. just go with it, yeah? whoever didn’t bother to show up is a dick.” and so Buck goes with it because Eddie is hot af and funny and really sweet and as they’re leaving the restaurant after the best non-planned date ever, Eddie asks Buck out for real this time.

Eddie saved the day with that one. He'd been watching Buck get increasingly more and more dejected as time went on (Eddie was also waiting for a date who bailed but he didn't really want to be there anyway so he's not as bummed) and he felt so bad for this sad wet rag of a man with devastatingly blue eyes that he had to go talk to him, and boy wasn't that the best decision he's made!

Hen and Karen can’t stop talking about how they want to set Eddie up with their other friend, Buck, so they give Eddie Buck’ number and they start texting each other and Buck is hilarious but shy about meeting

but ALSO there’s a cute bike delivery guy who brings Eddie mail at work and winks at him whenever he signs for a package AU (the bike delivery guy is Buck)

I saw Buddie, love triangle, and Hen and Karen and I was so confused let me tell you.

OH OH ALSO YEAH I LOVE THAT like Buck is a little shy after he met Eddie on Henren's orders, he really liked the guy, and also he's one of Eddie's regulars? The guy gets so many packages that Buck briefly has to wonder if he's a millionaire or some shit. He can't quite pluck up the courage to ask Eddie for a 2nd date, so instead he starts sending Eddie little gifts that he knows he'll have to deliver, and after Eddie figures out that it's Buck sending him the gifts, he finally asks Buck out on a date.
