Some thoughts on Summer Strike

This small town isn't some postcard paradise and I appreciate that. As anyone who's grown up in the countryside will tell you, there are definitely downsides. On the one hand, you may feel more in tune with the natural world and live at your own pace (if you're lucky). On the other hand, a close-knit community isn't necessarily welcoming. It can be just as lonely and as suffocating as a big city, depending on your circumstances.

Yeo Reum has never felt more free. Her life in Seoul was all about work and that uncaring boyfriend of hers. Her time is now her own, perhaps for the first time ever. In contrast, Bom is stuck in an unhappy home and powerless to change anything. Her father is a drunk, her schoolmates are bullies and her only escape is the ever-empty public library.

I like that the same place can be a different thing for different people, because it feels real and true. Instead of a picturesque little village where everything is pretty and everyone is nice.

I just realized while writing this that Yeo Reum is summer and Bom is spring, and you can really tell that Yeo Reum sees her younger self in Bom. Or at least in her loneliness and pain.

Idk it's just really nice to think about... that she's adopting her as a little sister... and they have matching names...and after the struggles of spring and growing up, another season of life will come. And summer isn't about having it all figured out, it's about learning to love yourself and living for no one else.

Another lovely thing about Summer Strike is that some characters just don't have big aspirations in life, and I can relate. It reminds me of When the Weather Is Fine in that way. There's people out there who wake up every day wanting to accomplish a big goal. I don't know what that's like. If I got myself to work and back home that day, managed to feed myself properly and my house isn't too much of a mess, I consider that a big enough accomplishment.

So to hear Yeo Reum say she doesn't have a life goal and to see Dae Beom give up on an academic career for a sleepy library and be happy with this choice, it feels good. I think it's okay to be in a transition period in your life, and it's okay if the transition period becomes what you want from life.

...I just hope Yeo Reum won't sleep on that questionable couch forever.

thoughts on the fiery priest s2 opening weekend (big spoilers ahead !!!)

hae-il is even more unhinged than before and idk if kng trained for this again but the fight choreo is next level esp. the stairway scene at the end of ep 1 and the warehouse battle in ep 2

the whole gang being part of the investigation right away !!!! the white board !!!!! they all got individual introduction but finally a continuing kdrama doesn’t act like people just disappear

gyeong-sun's re-introduction was chef's kiss and so was her entire time in the states i just love how they use lee hanee's comedic timing to perfection … my girl deserves some vacation days

meanwhile sk is still full of greasy prosecutors that jump at the first opportunity to be bought lol (hello seo hyun-woo who stars in all the good dramas this year)

bibi finally getting a different role than her usual type cast i am quite interested to see how it goes with her in the busan police and how she will work together with dae-young from what the premise told us

the fire eel introduction scene sent me into orbit and made me miss cheol-bom greatly … where are our thugs with actual style?

hae-il trying to unlock the phone while the guy was in the ice bath. the way kng played it so sincerely when he asked what the phone combination is was perfect

idk how i feel about the reveal of hae-il’s illness :( considering it’s terminal and he only takes little medication for it (and gyeong-sun and dae-young seem to know?) i hate how things might play out for him. also him pushing himself so hard while his body seems not to show many symptoms rn makes me feel we are gonna see him relapse later in the season

on a happier note seeing how married hae-il and dae-young behave around each other and how everyone knows it is my favourite thing. the mass after dae-young stayed up too late was funny as hell and felt so much like s1. can’t wait to see the whole main trio reunited next week!

they are obviously setting up the young priest as hae-il’s “successor in spirit” / showing someone who is just like him already and who can grow up to be a great priest too and i assume that is also gonna be extra emotional and angsty

What I'm watching

Summer Strike 1-5: I went into Summer Strike to compare it with Welcome to Samdal-ri, and found it so contrasting it borders on symmetry. Unlike Samdal, Yeo-reum, our heroine, is so anonymous that her mother's death feels like it never happened, this catastrophe barely puncturing the routine of her corporate grind. And Yeo-reum is a stranger to Andok, the sleepy seaside town she retires to as she tries to cherish time in her life again. There's fun perspective switching in the early episodes. Yeo-reum wanders through Andok with hazy whimsy, blossoms in the air, the sea; but the townsfolk are grounded in very specific interiors as they discuss and negotiate her place in their town. Already, without her even knowing, they've fitted her into the politics of their small world. Yeo-reum runs away to Andok to get her time back and she's very lucky that she can do that, because others are desperate to leave for Seoul. The synergy between Seoul and Andok is very real, and more nuanced than anything WTS tried to pull. Success isn't guaranteed in Seoul, peace isn't guaranteed in Andok, & happiness isn't guaranteed in either. Bom, the high-schooler she meets, needs an escape - her poverty and dysfunctional family feel magnified by Andok's smallness and the intense judgement of its people. Bom and Yeo-reum's sisterhood is so touching, and it wouldn't happen if Yeo-reum wasn't an outsider, wasn't presenting a vision of an adulthood not defined by desperation. I love them so much 🥹 The direction and performances are brilliant, especially Shin Eun-soo (Bom) and Park Ye-young (Ji-young).

No Gain No Love 1-4: Cannot believe how fun this show is. It hits its emotional beats with surprising effectiveness - I was seriously moved by the wedding, where Hae-young's foster siblings visit (and mourn) her mom, who can't remember them. And I vibe with its humour so much its almost embarrassing. Hae-young and her sisters are the perfect trio. People were lamenting pairing The Shin Min-ah with Kim Young-dae (very valid), & I was sure I'd enjoy the secondary couple more (with my fav Lee Sang-yi) - but that has not been the case! Kim Young-dae has outgrown the stiltedness that plagues these pretty boy actors, and his chemistry with Shin Min-ah is palpable. It helps that the show isn't afraid of sex and Hae-young is an assertive adult woman who knows exactly what she wants. NGNL isnt deep but its very honest and true to itself. I'd forgotten that you could write a romcom with characters that felt "real".

Perfect Family 1-6: My Sky Castle parents are back!! Kim Byung-chul & Yoon Se-ah have the most striking, photographable faces, which makes them the perfect pair for a gorgeously directed slow-burn thriller about two parents nestled in secrets, a mystery to their increasingly paranoid daughter. It's very slow moving so far, building up tension + expectations - I'm hoping what it's building up to is worth it. But I'm enjoying the slow-burn so far.

Beauty and Mr Romantic 1-40:

loll but in all seriousness, I've enjoyed my (re)discovery of charming Im Soo-hyang (which led me to check out My ID, one of the best things I've watched this year); I've enjoyed chatting abt it w/ the lovely people on Dramabeans, I've enjoyed the weekend check-in on this show's insanity. So it's not like I'm not having fun, but this show really, really, really doesn't want to be liked. I'm sure writer-nim is doing this on purpose - psychos outnumber sensible characters 6:1, and the writing goes out of its way to be as mean and low as possible. I never expected much from it, but there was a point where it was cute, and now it just seems determined to sink itself on its own aimless cynicism.

Summer Strike ep 5 teaches us:

- overexplaining never works

- drawing boundaries may cause chaos

- Koreans enjoy tomato with sugar, not salt

- physicists are the definition of anxiety induced awkwardness

How is what Dae Boem currently going through in any way Yeo Reum’s fault?  It’s not her fault that he took her home and then saw the graffiti. It not her fault he chose to sell his paper to help pay for Bom’s hospital stay. Yeo Reum never asked that and was working, on her own, to get the money.

Dae Beom hasn’t fully healed from his trauma. Maybe he hasn’t (or healed enough to really move on) because he has just endured for so long But Yeo Reum has actually pushed him to move forward but just being her.

Ji Young is a terrible “friend” trying to pin the blame on Yeo Reum. She was also the one who went behind his back and to meet with his former professor. Which he clearly, clearly did not want.
