24 August 1516 - battle of Marj Dabik: fought between Selim I and the Mamluks, it lasted only a few hours and Aleppo was captured by the Ottomans.

24 August 1703 - deposition of Mustafa II and enthronement of Ahmed III: after days of indecision on who should succeed Mustafa II - rioters refused to enthrone Emetullah Râbia Gülnuş's younger son Ahmed, because he came from the same mother, and wanted, instead, Ahmed II's son Şehzade Ibrahim as the new sultan - the ulema decided that Ahmed was better than an 11-year-old boy, and in a formal letter asked Emetullah Râbia Gülnuş for her approval. The valide sultan accepted and Mustafa II formally abdicated in favour of his younger brother. But it was not enough; the rioters insisted on her removal: "she was to go straight to the Old Palace and not be permitted into the New Palace". Gülnuş obeyed for a time until, under the protection of the second vizier, she was accompanied to the New Palace with a royal procession.

24 August 1874 - birth of Emine Sultan: daughter of Sultan Abdülaziz and Neş'erik Kadınefendi, she was the sultan's last child. Her parents both died when she was two, so she was raised in the household of her half-brother Şehzade Yusuf İzzeddin. Abdülhamid II wanted her to marry his son Abdülkadir Efendi but she did not like the prospect so she married Mehmed Şerif Paşa, son of Çavdaroğlu Ahmed Şükrü Paşa, on 12 September 1901. Together they had a daughter called Hamide, who most probably died in infancy. Emine Sultan died on 30 January 1920 after a short illness, and she was buried in the mausoleum of Mahmud II. Her husband was distraught over her death and composed "Gülşen-i Adn'ı penah etdi Emine Sultan" in her honour.

Sultan Selim I inherited from his father, Bayezid II, a sound administration and secure frontiers against the western Christian powers. But in the East, the new Sultan had to face two great Muslim rivals: the Sunni Mamluk sultans of Egypt and the Shia Safavid Shah Ismail I of Persia.

Selim Yavuz first devoted most of his energies to fighting against the Shia Safavids of Iran, who challenged Ottoman sovereignty in eastern Anatolia and Azerbaijan. As a result, in 1514, Selim set out on a campaign from Istanbul against the Shah of Persia.

The two armies met at the Battle of Chaldiran in northwestern Iran. Selim’s disciplined infantry, supported by field artillery, smashed the Safavid armies, and thus, the Ottomans secured a very significant victory against the Shah of Iran. The Battle of Chaldiran was just the beginning of the decades of destructive war, which only ended in 1555 with the Treaty of Amasya.

From 1516 to 1517, Selim devoted his time fighting against the Sunni Mamluks and overthrew them in a single year of campaigning, winning two decisive battles that again proved the superiority of the Ottoman army over their foes.

The Ottoman and Mamluk armies met in north of Aleppo at Marj Dabik on August 24, 1516. When Mamluk sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri died, apparently of a heart attack, the remnants of his troops fled. Aleppo and Damascus both surrendered without a fight.

On January 23, 1517, Selim now defeated the Mamluks at the Battle of Ridaniya and annexed the entire Mamluk Sultanate to the Ottoman Empire, including the Hejaz. Although remnants of the Mamluk army offered stiff resistance in Cairo, the resistance collapsed when Sultan Tumanbay (r. 1516–17) was captured and killed.

Sultan Selim I was by now the most prominent Muslim ruler. He ruled over the holiest places of Islam, was the protector of Mecca and Medina, and guarantor of the hajj. In just 8 years of his reign, he brought enormous expansion to his empire. He died in 1520 and was succeeded by his son Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

Kitab matan darjah 1 pun tak pernah sentuh. Selongkar kiitab al-Majmu' pun sebab nak cari mana selari dengan pendapat dia. Usul mazhab pun tak tahu apa. Kongsi pandangan pun menyalahi pendapat qaul muktamad, apatah lagi nak selari dengan ashab yang ada. Pandangan mazhab Syafi'i langsung tak diutamakan dan didahulukan kalau dibentangkan pelbagai pendapat. Dia ambik je mana yang dia nak tanpa mengira mazhab apa. Lepas tu, dabik dada "Saya bermazhab Syafi'i". Jijik sial. Mengaku je lah kau tak bermazhab. Nak jawapan canggih, cakap je mazhab kau firman Allah dan sabda Rasul. Paling nak sopan pun jawablah, "Kebanyakannya saya berpegang pada mazhab Syafi'i, tapi beberapa yang lain saya tidak sebegitu". Nak nampak indah sikit, "Saya pengikut salafussoleh". Apa susah? Bila kau nak bangga kau tu bermazhab Syafi'i, kalau kau tak pernah nak baca pun kitab Matan Abu Syuja' tu, sekurang-kurangnya kau akan utamakan dan dahulukan pengamalan mazhab Syafi'i bila diberi pilihan. Dan kau juga sama sekali tidak mengutarakan pandangan yang menyalahi qaul muktamad dan pendapat ashab di dalamnya, apatah lagi menyalahi usulnya. Ini barulah betul untuk kau sekurang-kurangnya nak mengaku yang kau ni mazhab Syafi'i. Tak perlulah kelirukan orang lain seperti itu semata-mata nak perisaikan diri daripada kena serangan balas sebab kau mengaku tak terikat dengan mana-mana mazhab.
