The Battle for Pumpkin King: Speculations

I’m finally back home, which means I jumped on to learn more about this. It was first shared in the TNBC Club Discord server! I found the direct Barnes & Noble page which confirms its legitimacy and gives us more information.

The official summary from the page:

“How did Jack Skellington become the Pumpkin King?

Explore Jack and Oogie Boogie’s early days in Halloween Town and learn how their inseparable friendship turns sour as they battle to become the next Pumpkin King. Discover the mastermind who’s pulling the strings, and relive the fantastic world of The Nightmare Before Christmas in this all-new manga adaptation!”

-- Apparently, this will be a manga prequel adaption of The Nightmare Before Christmas, published by TOKYOPOP. The story is credited as ideas from D.J. Milky (Who was behind the Zero’s Journey sequel comic book series), and  Shaun McLaughlin. Roberto Scalia is the illustrator while Dan Conner is credited as the author.

First off, I’m EXCITED we’re finally getting a TNBC prequel adaptation! I made a post not-too-long-ago how I wished we got more, and we’re getting one! This one will dive into Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie’s past, which I’ve had MANY headcanons about them behind friends who broke ties. This sounds like it’s going down a similar route..!

- I have no clue if it’s going to follow closely to the prequel TNBC Game, The Pumpkin King Game, where Jack and Oogie first met and began their rivalry. It doesn’t *seem* like it right now, but I’m not going to make grand assumptions so soon. Only time will tell!

Personally, I’m stoked and waiting to see more about this next year! What are your guy’s thoughts?

Title: The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero's Journey (Ultimate Manga Edition)

Synopsis: “Jack Skellington is the undisputed Pumpkin King of Halloween Town and creative genius behind the most spooktacular scares. Beside him through every great new creepy concept is his ever-faithful ghost pup, Zero. Finding himself lost in a curious land of baked goods, hand-wrapped presents, decorated trees, and joyful caroling, Zero must traverse the unfamiliar world of Christmas Town to find his way home!”

Personal Rating: 9/10

Opinion: As a huge fan of “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, when I heard there was a book based on this, I had to read it right away. And I read it on Christmas! My only issue is how I read to read it backwards, and I don’t really like doing that, just because I’m not used to doing that and I got confused at certain points due to that. But I was able to pick it up quickly and I greatly enjoyed it. I loved seeing more of Zero as well as Lock, Shock, and Barrel. I also like we got to see more of Christmas Town, which I found to be great. Highly recommend it. I got the whole edition on Google Books, and while that’s fine, I think it might be easier to read it from a physical copy, because they are moments that require you to read from two pages, not just one.

Who is Dennis The Menace? The story goes something like this. DTM listened to a lot of legendary New York City radio as a kid. Top 40 WABC. Progressive WNEW-FM. He also won a lot of "guess the song contests" that brought him into real radio studios where he decided he would be as good as the D.J.s he idolized! In 1972 the tender age of 15, Dennis the Menace auditioned for and was given his very own "Top 25" show on the first cable radio station in the U.S. (His parents drove him to the station!). Soon after, he was written up in the local newspaper as "New York's Youngest D.J." and that was the beginning of over 40 years on the radio! He has been on the air in New York, Florida, and as co-host of "Music Scene" on KISS-108, Boston where his interviews for the show also were heard on the "Rolling Stone Continuous History of Rock and Roll.” Today he is host/producer of two syndicated specialty radio shows broadcast from his Menace Studio in San Francisco. Starting with the Talking Heads in 1977 and some 600 interviews later, he considers his regular conversations with rock and rollers of note one of the most joyous parts of his life - only second to his daughter Kate! When he's not on the radio, he's a Consulting Creative Director, Writer, Producer for advertising and brand clients, Founder and Creative Director of a music content company for brands: PopCult and Creative Director for a new treat called Cat Sushi! “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is Getting a Sequel...in Comic Form

In spring 2018, Tokyopop will release Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey, which will follow Zero the ghost dog as he gets lost in Christmastown. Zero’s Journey is written by D.J. Milky with art from Studio DICE.
