For the record, it wasn’t like Percy thought bringing flowers to another dude was much of a “peace offering.” For another record, Percy also didn’t think there was anything wrong with it. Just to cover his bases. Super chill here.

It just . . . wasn’t necessarily a “Percy” thing to do.

So, when Ethan rejected him and should’ve sent him running into a convenient thunderstorm crying (if this was that particular genre of encounter), he had no qualms coming clean about the whole thing: “Yeah, so, I’m gonna be totally straight with you, man; one of the Demeter kids sort of just . . . handed me this to 'hold on to' and then never showed up again.” He glanced down at the arrangement in his hands, held about as awkwardly as a kid trying to hold a baby (“a kid” here meaning him; don’t hand him a baby). “Figured it could’ve been divine intervention, but.” Percy shrugged. “Since when has that ever worked in anyone’s favor? Lesson learned. Again.”

But, if nothing else, it at least gave him an opening. He was here, now. Talking. And since Ethan hadn’t completely expressed that he get lost, Percy decided things were going somewhat better than they could have. The little snort he let out at mere mention of Annabeth might’ve helped alleviate some awkward feelings.

“Have you met Annabeth—? I think she’d appreciate a trip to some architectural marvel more than she would— Whatever.” Really, not why he was here. And he didn’t need to think about all the places he wished he could take her, if things were different. “Look, I just wanted to see—” He hesitated. What did he want to “see,” really? (In general, less.) “Are you . . . So, you’re not actually allergic, right?”

“Oh, you think?”

His voice is a bit shriller than it should be. Okay, a lot shriller. In fact, he's pretty sure he's hit some notes he assumed weren't even possible anymore, promptly after expelling a sound Percy was positive couldn't have been human (or demigod . . . more like the squawk of a seagull? Nice and composed).

Riptide's readily in hand. If he had pulled that on any other god, they might've been offended, maybe snapped a finger and turned him into a pile of Percy Dust (which sounded suspiciously like Pixie Dust). Since this was Hermes, though, he'd have an easier time . . . presumably.

Regardless, he's already slackening out of a battle-tense stance, all the while trying to convince that organ in his chest to chill out before he keels over for reasons having nothing to do with an angry god. The tip of his blade droops, his gaze drifts from the offender for a moment while collecting himself, and at first, he snaps, “Can I help you?”

But maybe some part of him already knows. Maybe that part is just as much the culprit of his tight tone as his frazzled nerves. And maybe, whether it's that part or another one, he realizes he's being unfair—

“Sorry,” Percy mumbles, capping his weapon now that he's sure there's no threat. He looks back. “What's, um . . . ” What's up? doesn't seem entirely appropriate, either. “I'm gonna just go ahead and make a wild guess that you're here for a reason—?”
