Homework & High Fantasy
This is a blog about my D&D character Mercy Benson, an (at time of posting) 8th-level human Wild Magic Sorceress who's adventuring for a project she's doing for her freshman year of high school at the Sproutling School for Sorcery.
However, she did go to a wizard school called the Amethyst Wizarding Academy for the majority of her childhood, and that's when this blog is set.
The Amethyst Wizarding Academy has a majorly purple aesthetic, and the students are given purple spellbooks to write down their spells in. Mercy, not being a wizard at all, has written disorganized notes that I might cobble together into a sourcebook called Mercy's Locker of Everything.
Amethyst Mercy:
she/her
aroace
5th-level Wild Magic Sorceress
Human
Lawful neutral
Has attended Amethyst for about 5 years now
Trying to get her surges under control
Bullied by a blue dragonborn Evocation wizard named Myastan Kriv (his personal name is Kriv; Myastan is the name of his clan)
Sproutling Mercy:
she/her
aroace
8th-level Wild Magic Sorceress
Human
Still lawful neutral
Thriving in Sproutling's academic environment
Trying to learn how to harness her wild magic
Not popular at school, but not bullied either
Me (OOC):
she/her
??????
1st-level Tumblr poster
Human
Neutral
Has attended my school for less than a year
Made Mercy like this as a metaphor for a 2e kid in an environment that doesn't accommodate
I have some school friends
I am open to asks about Mercy!

Our 2+ year characters hit level 20 last night. Findum fought his master for the last time now wretched and warped by Bane's influence. Upon spending their last rest Findum rummaged the journals of his late mentor to find that he was innocently manipulated into performing these dark deeds. Findum wandered off to where his late master laid and he heard his spirit speak to him " thank you, Findum, for giving me the rest I seek" then a smile appeared on his face. Findum ripped a piece of his Gi off and tied it to his sash in remembrance of what Bane has taken from him and his people as well as a cloak of displacement that he swiftly threw on in one fluid motion.
"We will meet again friend..."
After the long rest the imitation world tree created by Bane started to rumble and shake. The tree started to rise up into the sky and below them they saw an abomination of Terrasque and an elder gold dragon where the tree was planted. The tree began to slide off its back and the group caught their footing and descended to the ground below. The Gold Terrasque Dragon bellowed before them. A very intense and devastating battle ensued but ultimately the Terrasque was no match for the group of four.
Tired, but not beaten, the ruin and fire the party found themselves in started to get black as night. Enveloped by darkness a grassy knoll appeared in front of them with a single ray of light shining down on a man perched on a rock with his back towards them.
"That wasn't nice of you to kill my pet."
And then the session ended there.
We have one more session left in this campaign that I've been playing in for over two years. It's hard to think about a Saturday night where I'm not playing Findum along Shade, or Redbeard. We played with a shape shifter rogue for a year and recently picked up a fighter. It's bittersweet in a sense. The next session will be the conclusion of the campaign whether we win or lose the fight against Bane.
Little note about Findum tying the piece of clothing to his Gi: the DM thought it was so honorable and respectful to Findum's master that he gave me +2 to my Dex breaking all conventional stats. There was also a moment where our cleric used his divine intervention to allow us to get a long rest after the Terrasque fight and Findum's God also decided to make herself shown as well. It was kinda cool to see Kord and The Raven Queen together in one place. Something not too common for any mortals to experience. Kord has tested the cleric throughout the campaign. The Raven Queen? She doesn't test she just expects results.
Overall this has been one of the best campaigns I've been a part of. I'm excited to see how our ending affects campaign 2.

I've been going through your d&dposting with great interest and your posts about dungeoncrawling reminded me of my first dungeoncrawl experience and how much radically better it was than my first two campaigns in 5e. My first campaign in 5e was an urban adventure using the Waterdeep Dragon Heist module and it was sooo much prep that I ended up using very little of even after almost 10 sessions. My next campaign was a kind of Dragonlance-y style overland adventure that was much more successful but also super stressful cause I was pretty much improvising new setpieces and destinations for the PCs in real time.
Then, like a year later, I ran a dungeoncrawl in Into the Odd and it was maybe the best RPG experience I've had, no stress and virtually no prep for me whatsoever. Dungeoncrawls are awesome because there's a clear gameplay loop for both the players and the GM, which goes a long way to preventing that frustration where the player's expectations for what choices they can make differ from what the GM has prepared (i.e. "railroading"). And that's because a dungeon is a delimited network of finite nodes with obvious ways of navigating between nodes. After that game, it made it so much clearer to me why dungeoncrawls were the origin of TTRPGs and how much a lot of trad games lack an understanding of the importance of having a defined gameplay loop compared to the OSR or storygame movements.
Yeaaaah! :) and to be clear, dungeon crawls are not the end-all-be-all of tabletop RPGs, but they pretty much are what D&D and its surrounding games excel at! As you said, there are plenty of games out there that have clearly defined gameplay goals and as such are not a headache to facilitate, because the facilitating player knows what the game expects them to do! With D&D, once you move outside of the dungeon crawl genre, the game itself gives you absolute dick fuck all!
Anyway, I'm glad you've found my posting interesting! I love dungeons! We should send all the boys into dungeons! With luck they'll come back no longer boys!

🙄.
there's this post that's got about ~1500 notes rn about how SOME parts of the of/md fandom are happy with their show and how good it is, and then SOME OTHER people are SO WEIRD that they came up with a whole tjlc theory that the writing is "bad" on "purpose" and izzy is going to be revived! it's so popular! and like
maybe it's just me because i only follow one ofm/dposting person, but i've never seen those posts, and
it seems that the reasonable, normal part of the fandom that's just focused on enjoying their beloved beautiful show isn't that focused on it, if they have time to check what's going on the other side and make fun of it? and again it might be me but when someone pisses me off i simply block them. this is why i had no idea izzy antis were pointing and laughing at one rather big meta series on ao3 for two weeks until i saw the post on some unrelated blog i was browsing for non-ofm/d reasons. idk though

How did you pick out your dice - do you have a theme? How do you feel when you’re making an important roll? What dice-related superstitions do you participate in, and how seriously do you take them?
I’m a graduate student and longtime GM who is running an anthropological study on how tabletop RPG players think and feel about their dice. If you play any TRPG system that uses dice and are over the age of 18, it would help me a lot if you took this survey and/or shared it with your game group. All of the questions are optional, and you should feel free to answer only as many as you feel like and in whatever level of detail you have the time and energy for - anything you contribute is appreciated!
Pictured above is my own humble dice collection. I also have several plain sets that I keep for players who don’t have their own, but my personal dice are an eclectic mix of whatever caught my attention at the game store.
