The opening of Nosferatu Eau de Macabre perfume is powdery and floral from the violet and lilac notes. On the dry down, however, the petrichor and oud take over creating a scent that is as rich as it is ephemeral. In short, this fragrance is marvelous, innovative, and striking, described by Heretic as “An encounter with an apparition in the cold, damp caves of Count Orlok's castle.” [...] when I was inspired to make a cake for this film, I wanted to capture a similar essence. Not a black and red cake with fang decor and fake blood. I wanted to craft something more sophisticated and worthy of a film that pays such significant attention to historical accuracy and elemental curation, the way the perfume did. So, this is a cake, based off of a perfume, based off of a movie. The notes for Heretic’s Nosferatu Eau de Macabre are as follows: Top: Lilac, Amberette Heart: Petrichor, Violet Absolute, Orris Concrete, Cypriol Base: Vegan Ambergris, Oud, Labdanum [...] After much trial and deliberation, I was able to categorize the perfume notes into “cake notes”: woody, earthy, purple floral, and petrichor. For each of these, I found an ingredient and a way to utilize said ingredient to elicit the corresponding perfume note. I landed on an almond Earl Grey sponge cake (based off the almond cake by Heather Ho), rose water cake soak, blackberry thyme coulis, and a violet Earl Grey Swiss meringue buttercream. I decorated this cake in the “vintage” cake style, heralding the aristocratic architecture of the period, and finished the cake with Count Orlok’s sigil, piped carefully on top. What fragrances do you think Dmitri Kravinoff has in his cabinet?

Dmitri is really my absolute ideal character for perfumeposting since he has both a) the budget and b) the personality for it, even apart from all the bottles and products he's got by his sink in that ABSURDLY luxurious bathroom. I don't think his tastes are especially arcane or adventurous but I think he's a Kilian boy (especially with all the liquor and tobacco-inspired scents like Smoking Hot), Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Parfums de Marly lad. A nice-looking bottle matters to him.

All very woody/aromatic/spicy/smoky, occasionally very tame ventures into scents marketed as masc-leaning unisex; maybe he has a bottle in there that's lighter and more appropriate for nice daytime wear on a sunny day but he has a really young guy's conception of what both luxury and sophistication smell like. I feel like he spends a lot of money on clothes and personal care because it's not like he has a lot else going on in his life before his dad dies. 🥲

Omega as Etoile Dune Nuit by Goutal Paris

Top Notes: Italian betgamot, Italian mandarin, blackberry. Middle notes: Irish, rose, Egyptian jasmine. Base notes: Cashmere wood, vanilla, musk.

To me, this scent is very rose and musk forward. Something soft, vintage, and while it isn't a head snapper, it can be something of comfort. It reads Omega to me in so many ways, from the name, but also the scent family.

Air as Poets of Berlin by Vilhelm Parfumerie

Top notes: Blueberry, lemon. Middle: Vanilla, green wild orris. Base notes: Vanilla, sandalwood, vetiver.

Bright, summery, and sweet without being overly sweet. A beautiful gourmand that is reminiscent of blueberry lemon muffins. This reads Air for how bright and free it feels, warm and inviting. It's truly and indescribable scent.

Chain as Bitch, Please by Confessions of A Rebel

Notes: Blackcurrant, sandalwood, raspberry, musk, jasmine, and oakmoss.

Sultry, spicey, and confident. All perfect things for the spooky first Water Ghoul. Blackcurrant and sandalwood together make for such an alluring scent, one that draws you in with very little room to move away from the strike.

Earth as Calm in Cedar by Scents of Wood

Notes: Green fig, violet leaves, blackcurrant, mimosa, oud, cypriol heart, tonka bean, and vetiver.

I would be remiss if I didn't have Earth as a woody scent, it's too fitting. Reminiscent of the fresh greenery of spring, a sunny day in nature, or even the dog days of summer.

Alpha as Padre by MALO

Notes: Cedar, sandalwood, leather, cardamom, fig, and musk.

Intense, woody, and warm- like a bonfire. Masculine as all get out. I don't reach for this one often, purely because it's so intimidating. Very similar to Whisky 1969 by Thin Wild Mercury, but just more.

OKK i've been cooking. So i've been researching fragrance stuff and making candles with perfuming stuff.

so apparentally they scent candles by fragrance oils - which is like oil and essential oils. So what i'll do is make a fragrance oil then make it into a candle.

so if I wanted to make you into a candle i'd get 4oz of sweet almond oil (it's the carrier oil so it can't have a strong scent) and then i'd get these oils: cinnamon (obviously), Fir (douglas, i'm not a hooligan), Cypriol, Pine, lemongrass, and a hint of peppermint.

so i would have to add that peppermint in a really small amount because the scent is meant to be more of an undertone. the main ideas are the dense woody scents of the cinnamon and stuff.

I want the cinnamon to be the main one is the point.

so i'd probably add 4 drops of cinnamon essential oil, 2 fir, 1 cypriol, 2 pine, 1 lemongrass and HALF A DROP of peppermint.

It's supposed to be strong with hints of that sweet mint and fresh lemongrass. you know? most of all its supposed to be all strong and woody.

then i'll turn the fragrance oil into a candle and it'll be nice.

Moth comes at you fast.

it goes on alarmingly honey-sweet, but it’s quickly dampened by a pleasant smoky-woody dry note.

A tender, fluffy, pale-yellow mimosa floral aura keeps peeking out around the edges and gradually comes to the forefront; now Moth is a mimosa scent backstopped by potent honey and smoky dusty woods.

Then the florals fade and we’re back to honey and dry smoky woods, yellow and black. It’s an intense combination, but I find it balanced and not quite as overwhelming as it sounds; it’s a bit powdery, which softens the effect.

Moth isn’t the rugged desert fantasy that would be, say, Andy Tauer’s take on honey and charred woods; it’s a softer, more antique-attic vibe.

And then —in less than two hours — it changes again! now it’s a comforting cloak of spices and dusty, powdery woods, in shades of muted brown. This phase is my favorite, and the most truly moth-like. It’s a subdued personal aura of soft dry warmth, like a brown cashmere wrap dress.

Moth’s drydown is not too far from the powdery-cinnamon-incense drydown of Fate Woman after their respective opening fireworks have subsided.

Definitely a grown woman’s scent; the “powdery” smell of heliotrope tends to code as feminine, and when you combine powdery softness with warm dark spices and woods the effect is rather maternal…but also plausibly seductive in a Mrs. Robinson kind of way. A MILFy moth.

Moth is an impressive achievement — a high-concept creative idea (inspired by a moth drawn to a candle flame) that also pulls together into something that simply smells good.
