This is part of why having and using communication systems, like Signal, Bluesky and the already decentralized Mastodon, that are not directly controlled by the cyber putschists (twitter completely, facebook, instagram, threads, and tiktok likely as well) is essential. Vital to have ways to connect with and share information that are not subject to coup plotters' direct manipulation.
"Let me say this more clearly: what is happening right now, in America, in real time, is a coup."
"This is an information war and this is what a coup now looks like."
"Musk didn’t need a tank, guns, soldiers. He had a small crack cyber unit that he sent into the Treasury department last weekend. He now has unknown quantities of the entire US nation’s most sensitive data and potential backdoors into the system going forward. Treasury officials denied that he had access but it then turned out that he did. If it ended there, it would be catastrophic. But that unit - whose personnel include a 19-year-old called “Big Balls” - is now raiding and scorching the federal government, department by department, scraping its digital assets, stealing its data, taking control of the code and blowing up its administrative apparatus as it goes."

Starscream truly loved Windviper's devious little mind. He watched her demeanor darken as she began to list all of the deliciously devious ideas. Granted, they were all things he had attempted before. But that didn't mean he couldn't try again, eventually.
"All very good guesses, and ideas I can circle back to. I do like the idea of gutting him like a common organic." He hummed. Though, anything he did involving taking out Megatron painfully would have to be done where Megatron could not turn on him and return the favor. That had happened before... So. Many. Times.
"I can catch him unawares, get him on the floor, and then blast him to pieces. With that blasted ion cannon attached to his arm, he's extremely top heavy. Easy for him to... Trip." He chuckled darkly.
"And then, when he's nothing but slagged scraps, I will take my rightful place as leader of the Decepticons!" He laughed, though this one was more maniacal.
After a moment, he collected himself, resetting his vocalizer and looking down at Windviper. The little flier was always so keen to throw ideas at him and to assist in the plots. Granted, he always took the credit, even if said evil coup plot was mostly her idea from time to time.
He couldn't have her taking the fall. He knew how to evade Megatron's worst. She didn't. He'd had eons up on eons of practice. "However, poisoning his fuel might work better. It's been a long time since I've tried, and I do have a lethal dose of hydrogen-chloride gas and dihydrogen-oxide." He brought a servo up to his chin in thought. The hydrochloric acid would do a very nasty number on a fuel tank.
"What do you think would be best?" He hummed as he motioned her to continue walking. He didn't want them to get caught.
Smiling, Windviper’s frame warmed as the sound of his laughter resonated like music within her. She felt blessed to not only hear such a rare sound but to also be the reason for it. Refocusing her optics back to him, she hadn’t meant to say he was beautiful aloud but now it was there, out in the open, spoken words making the statement all the more true in her spark.
When Starscream gestured for her to follow, her smile grew into a grin as she begun trotting after him with her helm held high. She would cheerfully follow him anywhere, do anything he asked, for she trusted him despite what others had told her. In her optics, Starscream was perfect, and nothing anyone said would change that.
Her audials piquing with interest as he spoke of ‘his latest plan’, she stopped for a moment as her processor clicked once, twice, three times before she shook her helm and returned to following him. Struggling to keep up, his stride so much larger then her own, she was forced to run between steps.
“I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure. What has that marvelous mind of yours come up with this time, Star?”
Managing to finally keep up with his stride, she excitedly moved in front of him, walking backwards as she gleefully spoke. “Oh, oh, let me guess…” A small frown of thought etching onto her faceplate she began to list what came to mind. “Oh, poison his fuel… no, no, I know, throw him out the airlock into deep space…”
Pausing for a moment, her demeanor turning darker, she stopped walking as her servos clenched and she grinned in delight at her next words. “Gut him like an animal, make him squirm and squeal, hurt him like he’s hurt you!"
The thought of Megatron receiving punishment at the servos of her precious Starscream had Windviper buzzing with excitement as she beamed up at him with darkened optics.

A short note here on what I’m covering and why. The political changes we’re seeing across the world are underpinned by technological ones that are now accelerating. For more than a decade, I’ve been trying to investigate and expose these forces. Since 2016 that’s included following a thread that led from Brexit to Trump via a shady data company called Cambridge Analytica and the revelation of a profound threat exploit at the heart of our democracies. But what’s happening now in the US is a paradigm shift: this is Broligarchy, a concept I coined last summer when I warned that what we were seeing was the proposed merger of Silicon Valley with state power. That has now happened. Writing about this from the UK, it’s clear we have a choice: we help lead the fight back against it. Or it comes for us next. Please share this with family and friends if you feel it’s of value. Thank you, as ever, Carole
Let me say this more clearly: what is happening right now, in America, in real time, is a coup.
This is an information war and this is what a coup now looks like.
Musk didn’t need a tank, guns, soldiers. But that unit - whose personnel include a 19-year-old called “Big Balls” - is now raiding and scorching the federal government, department by department, scraping its digital assets, stealing its data, taking control of the code and blowing up its administrative apparatus as it goes.
This is what an unlawful attack on democracy in the digital age looks like. It didn’t take armed men, just Musk’s taskforce of boy-men who may be dweebs and nerds but all the better to plunder the country’s digital resources. This was an organised, systematic, jailbreak on one of the United States’ most precious and sensitive resources: the private data of its citizens.
In 2019, I appeared in a Netflix documentary, The Great Hack. That’s a good place to start to understand what is going on now, but it wasn’t the great hack. It was among the first wave of major tech exploits of global elections. It was an exemplar of what was possible: the theft and weaponization of 87 million people’s personal data. But this now is the Great Hack. This week is when the operating system of the US was wrenched open and is now controlled by a private citizen under the protection of the President.
If you think I’ve completely lost it, please be advised that I’m far from alone in saying this. The small pools of light in the darkness of this week has been stumbling across individual commentators saying this for the last week. Just because these words are not on the front page in banner headlines of any newspaper doesn’t mean this isn’t not happening. It is.
In fact, there has been relentless, assiduous, detailed reporting in all outlets across America. There are journalists who aren’t eating or sleeping and doing amazing work tracking what’s happening. There is fact after fact after fact about Musk’s illegal pillaging of the federal government. But news organisation leaders are either falling for the distraction story - the most obviously insane one this week being rebuilding Gaza as a luxury resort, a story that dominated headlines and political oxygen for days. Or…what? Being unable to actually believe that this is what an authoritarian takeover looks like? Being unsure of whether you put the headline about the illegal coup d’etat next to a spring season fashion report? Above or below the round-up of best rice cookers? The fact is the front pages look like it’s business as normal when it’s anything but.
This was Ruth Ben-Ghiat on Tuesday. She’s a historian of fascism and authoritarianism at New York University and she said this even before some of this week’s most extreme events had taken place. (A transcript of the rest of her words here.)
“It’s very unusual. In my study of authoritarian states, it's only really after a coup that you see such a speed, such obsessive haste to purge bureaucracy so quickly. Or when somebody is defending themselves, like Erdogan after the coup attempt against him, massive purge immediately. So that's unusual. I don't have another reference point for a private individual coming in, infiltrating, trying to turn government to the benefit of his businesses and locking out and federal employees. It is a coup. I'm a historian of coups, and I would also use that word. So we're in a real emergency situation for our democracy.”
A day later, this was Tim Snyder, Yale, a Yale professor and another great historian of authoritarianism, here: “Of course it’s a coup.”
History was made this week and while reporters are doing incredible work, to understand it our guides are historians, those who’ve lived in authoritarian states and Silicon Valley watchers. They are saying it. What I’ve learned from investigating and reporting on Silicon Valley’s system-level hack of our democracy for eight long years and seeing up close the breathtaking impunity and entitlement of the men who control these companies is that they break laws and they get away with it. And then lie about it afterwards. That’s the model here.
Everything that I’ve ever warned about is happening now. This is it. It’s just happening faster than anyone could have imagined.
It’s not that what’s happening is simply unlawful. This is what David Super, an administrative law professor at Georgetown Law School told the Washington Post.
“So many of these things are so wildly illegal that I think they’re playing a quantity game and assuming the system can’t react to all this illegality at once.”
And he’s right. The system can’t and isn’t. Legal challenges are being made and even upheld but there’s no guarantee or even sign that Musk is going to honour them. That’s one of the most chilling points my friend, Mark Bergman, made to me over the weekend.
Last week, I included a voice note from my friend, tech investor turned tech campaigner, Roger McNamee, so you could hear direct from an expert about the latest developments in AI. This week I’ve asked Mark to do the honours.
He’s a lawyer, Washington political insider, and since last summer, he’s been participating in ‘War Game’ exercises with Defense Department officials, three-star generals, former Cabinet Secretaries and governors. In five exercises involving 175 people, they situation-tested possible scenarios of a Trump win. But they didn’t see this. It’s even worse than they feared.
“Those challenges have been in respect of shutting down agencies, firing federal employees and engaging in the most egregious hack of government. It all at the hand hands of DOGE, Musk and his band of tech engineers. DC right now is shell-shocked. It is a government town, USA, ID, the FBI, the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, CIA, no federal agency will be spared the revenge and retribution tours in full swing, and huge numbers have been put on administrative leave, reassigned or fired, and the private sector is as much at risk, particularly NGOs and civil society organizations. The more high-profile violate the law, which is why the courts have been quick to enjoin actions. “So yes, we've experienced a coup, not the old fashioned kind, no tanks or mobs, but an undemocratic and hostile takeover of government. It is cruel, it is petty. It can be brutal. It is at once chaotic and surgical. We said the institutions held in 2020 but behind institutions or people, and the extent to which all manner of power structures have preemptively obeyed is hugely worrying. There are legions ready to carry out the Trump agenda. The question is, will the rule of law hold?”
Last Tuesday, Musk tried to lay off the entire CIA. That’s the government body with the slogan ‘We are the nation’s first line of defense’. Every single employee has been offered an unlawful ‘buyout’ - what we call redundancy in the UK - or what 200 former employees - spies - have said is blatant attempt to rebuild it as a political enforcement unit. Over the weekend, the Washington Post reports that new appointees are being presented with “loyalty tests”.
Musk’s troops - because that’s what they are, mercenaries - are acting in criminal, unlawful, unconstitutional ways. Organisations are acting quickly, taking lawsuits, and for now the courts are holding. But the key essential question is whether their rulings can be enforced with a political weaponized Department of Justice and FBI. What Mark Bergman told me (and is in the extended note below) is that they’ve known since the summer that there would be almost no way of pushing back against Trump. This politicisation of all branches of law enforcement creates a vacuum at the heart of the state. As he says in that note, the ramifications of this are little understood outside the people inside Washington who study this for a living.
And at least some of what DOGE is doing can never be undone. Musk, a private citizen, now has vast clouds of citizens’ data, their personal information and it seems likely, classified material. When data is out there, it’s out there. That genie can never be put back into the bottle.
Itt’s what it’s possible to do with that data, that the real nightmare begins. What machine learning algorithms and highly personalised targeting can do. It’s a digital coup. An information coup. And we have to understand what that means. Our fleshy bodies still inhabit earthly spaces but we are all, also, digital beings too. We live in a hybrid reality. And for more than a decade we have been targets of hybrid warfare, waged by hostile nation states whose methodology has been aped and used against us by political parties in a series of disrupted elections marked by illegal behaviour and a lack of any enforcement. But this now takes it to the next level.
It facilitates a concentration of wealth and power - because data is power - of a kind the world has never seen before.
Facebook’s actual corporate motto until 2014 taken from words Mark Zuckerberg spoke was “Move fast and break things”. That phrase has passed into commonplace: we know it, we quote it, we also fail to understand what that means. It means: act illegally and get away with it.
And that is the history of Silicon Valley. Its development and cancerous growth is marked by series of larcenous acts each more grotesque than the last. And Musk’s career is an exemplar of that, a career that has involved rampant criminality, gross invasions of privacy, stock market manipulation. And lies. The Securities and Exchange Commission is currently suing Musk for failing to disclose his ownership stock before he bought Twitter. The biggest mistake right now is to believe anything he says.
Every time, these companies have broken the law, they have simply gotten away with it. I know I’m repeating this, but it’s central to understanding both the mindset and what’s happening on the ground. And no-one exemplifies that more than Musk. The worst that has happened to him is a fine. A slap on the wrist. An insignificant line on a balance sheet. The “cost of doing business”.
On Friday, Robert Reich, the former United States Secretary of Labor, who’s been an essential voice this week, told the readers of his Substack to act now and call their representatives.
“Friends, we are in a national emergency. This is a coup d’etat. Elon Musk was never authorized by Congress to do anything that he’s doing, he was never even confirmed by Congress, his so-called Department of Government Efficiency was never authorized by Congress. Your representatives, your senators and Congressmen have never given him authority to do what he is doing, to take over government departments, to take over entire government agencies, to take over government payments system itself to determine for himself what is an appropriate payment. To arrogate to himself the authority to have your social security number, your private information? Please. Listen, call Congress now.”
It’s a coup
I found myself completely poleaxed on Wednesday. I read this piece on the New York Times website first thing in the morning, a thorough and alarming analysis of headlined “Trump Brazenly Defies Laws in Escalating Executive Power Grab”. It quoted Peter M. Shane, who is a legal scholar in residence at New York University, “programmatic sabotage and rampant lawlessness.” It was displayed prominently on the front page of the New York Times but it was also just one piece among many, a small weak signal amid the overpowering noise.
There’s another word for an “Executive Power Grab”, it’s a coup. And newspapers need to actually write that in big black letters on their front pages and tell their tired, busy, overwhelmed, distracted, scared readers what is happening. That none of this is “business as usual.”
Over on the Guardian’s UK website on Wednesday, there was not a single mention on the front page of what was happening. Trump’s Gaza spectacular diversion strategy drowned out its quotient of American news. We just weren’t seeing what’s happening in the seat of government of our closest ally. As a private citizen mounted a takeover of the cornerstone superpower of the international rules-based order, our crucial NATO ally, our biggest single trading partner, the UK government didn’t even apparently notice.
The downstream potential international consequences of what is happening in America are profound and terrifying. That our government and much of the media is asleep at the wheel is a reason to be more not less terrified. Musk has made his intentions towards our democracy and national security quite clear. What he hasn’t yet had is the backing of the US state. That is shortly going to change. One of the first major stand-offs will be UK and EU tech regulation. I hope I’m wrong but it seems pretty obvious that’s what Musk’s Starmer-aimed tweets are all about. There seems no world in which the EU and the UK aren’t headed for the mother of all trade wars.
And that’s before we even consider the national security ramifications. The prime minister should be convening Cobra now. The Five Eyes - the intelligence sharing network of the US, UK, New Zealand, Australia and Canada - is already likely breached. Trump is going to do individual deals with all major trading partners that’s going to involve preposterous but real threats, including likely dangling the US’s membership of NATO over our heads all while Russia watches, waits and knows that we’ve done almost nothing to prepare. Plans to increase our defence spending have been made but not yet implemented. Our intelligence agencies do understand the precipice we’re on but there’s no indication the government is paying any attention to them. The risks are profound. The international order as we know it is collapsing in real time.
It’s a coup
We all know that the the first thing that happens when a dictator seizes power is that he (it’s always a he) takes control of the radio station. Musk did that months ago. It wasn’t that Elon Musk buying Twitter pre-ordained what is now happening but it made it possible. And it was the moment, minutes after Trump was shot and he went full-in on his campaign that signalled the first shot fired in his digital takeover.
It’s both a mass propaganda machine and also the equivalent of an information drone with a deadly payload. It’s a weapon that’s already been turned on journalists and news organisations this week. There’s much more to come.
On Friday, Musk started following Wikileaks on Twitter. Hours later, twisted, weaponized leaks from USAID began.
This is going to get so much worse. Musk and MAGA will see this as the opening of the Stasi archive. It’s not. It’s rocketfuel for a witchhunt. It’s hybrid warfare against the enemies of the state. It’s going to be ugly and cruel and its targets are going to need help and support. Hands across the water to my friends at OCCRP, the Overseas Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, an investigative journalism organisation that uncovers transnational crime, that’s been in Musk’s sights this weekend, one of hundreds of media organisations around the world whose funding has been slashed overnight.
It’s a coup
By now you may feel scared and helpless. It’s how I felt this week. I had the same sick feeling I had watching UK political coverage before the pandemic. The government was just going to ignore the wave of deaths rippling from China to Italy and pretend it wasn’t happening? Really? That’s the plan?
This is another pandemic. Or a Chernobyl. It’s a bomb at the heart of the international order whose toxic fallout is going to inevitably drift our way.
My internal alarm bell, a sense of urgency and anxiety goes even further back. To early 2017, when I uncovered information about Cambridge Analytica’s illegal hack of data from Facebook while the company’s VP, Steve Bannon, was then on the National Security Council. That concept of highly personalised data in the control of a ruthless and political operator was what tripped my emergency wires. That is a reality now.
The point is that the shock and awe is meant to make us feel helpless. So I’m telling a bit of my own personal story here. Because part of what temporarily paralyzed me last week was that this is all happening while my own small corner of the mainstream media is collapsing in on itself too. The event that I’ve spent the last eight years warning about has come to pass and in a month, 100+ of my colleagues at the Guardian will be out of the door and my employment will be terminated. I will no longer have the platform of the news organisation where I’ve done my entire body of work to date and was able to communicate to a global audience.
But then, it’s all connected. We are living through an information crisis. It’s what underpins everything. In some ways, this happening now is not surprising at all. Moreover, many of the people who I see as essential voices during this crisis (including those above) are doing that effectively and independently from Substack as I will try to continue to do.
And, the key thing that the last eight years has given me is information. The lawsuit I fought for four years as a result of doing this work very almost floored me. But it didn’t. And I’ve learned essential skills during those years. It was part of what powered me to fight for the rights of Guardian journalists during our strike this December.
The next fightback against Musk and the Broligarchy has to draw from the long, long fight for workers rights which in turn influenced the fight for civil rights that must now power us on as we face the great unknown. What comes next has to be a fight for our data rights, our human rights.
This was former Guardian journalist Gary Younge on our picket line and I’ve thought about these words a lot. You have to fight even if you won’t necessarily win. Power is almost never given up freely.
If you value any of this and want me to be able to continue, I’d be really grateful if you signed up, free, or even better, paid subscription. And I’d also urge you to sign up also for the Citizen Dispatch, that’s the newsletter from the non-profit I founded that campaigns around these issues. There is much more it can and needs to do.

One random fact about each and every one of my Addisons because I CAN:
-Target (Main Pink, jewellery maker, Cyber Shoes manager, tea shop owner)'s fav Light World flowers are bleeding hearts and foxgloves.
-Sample (Main Blue, Cyber Shoes II customer service) has insomnia. Only in his worst mental states can he actually sleep, but only very lightly.
-Banner (Main Orange, fashion designer and caterer) has a borderline unhealthy obsession with making Victorian-era clothes specifically for themself to put on display in their own closet. They can count on one hand the amount of outfits they've actually worn of that time period.
-Broadcast (Main Yellow, news / shopping channel host. Their only host.) is aromantic. YIPPEE.
-Spam (Addispam, email-man and ever-changing intern) learned how to make cars in his spare time by himself before he made it big. He never had actually used them, though - just kept them in an unused alleyway and mix-n-matched them in his spare time between delivering emails and internships.
♤~♤
-Click (Banner's boyfriend, baker and party caterer, Pink) lives in an attic above his bakery. It's small, but it feels like home to them. It has a stained glass window overlooking a highway on the other side of Main Street.
-Vice (Sample's co-worker / girlfriend, Service's Trojan, cashier at Cyber Shoes II, Orange) breaks into Sample's apartment at night to raid his fridge / watch TV for a while. She doesn't know that Sample is awake every time she does this and just lets her get away with it (they live in the same complex). She loves the nights that he makes stuff with leftovers for dinner.
-Snap (Broadcast's co-worker and best friend, camera-man, Green)'s favourite drink is a Shirley Temple. They've never been a fan of alcohol.
♤~♤
-Gamble (Mobile and Clickbait's father, casino owner, Blue), despite being an online advertisement, doesn't know much about how to actually use the Internet beyond posting his casino ads. Mobile tries to help him learn by giving him social media accounts, but he's basically like a grandpa using Facebook.
-Mobile (Clickbait’s elder sister, mobile advertiser [mainly in gambling / lottery / casino apps] and casino bartender, Yellow) prefers to go by Cooper / Couper, or Coop / Coup, her middle name - a reference to Martin Cooper, inventor of the mobile phone.
-Clickbait (Mobile's younger brother and Click's Trojan, clickbait advertiser [mainly making Couper's ads more flashy and clickable], casino bartender, Cyber Shoes II supervisor, gossip columnist, Pink)'s only 'true' friend is a young Werewerewire named Amp that he met in the Dark Web.
-Service (Manager / owner of Cyber Shoes II, Orange) has tapped Vice, Clickbait, and Sample's phones to monitor their activity on their phones, much to their displeasure.
♤~♤
-Hanahaki (placeholder name, Purple)'s favourite flowers are lavender and wisteria vines.
-Patient 0 (placeholder name, Pink) is one of the oldest Addisons to exist and hates being one. Not like Spamton and Sample do with just 'being a Darkner in general,' but actively hates the Addison species, and has days where he wants to destroy his casing to be unrecognizable as one... unfortunately he has enough damage to his endoskeleton as is without uncovering his entire inner skeleton.

Long story short:
There's been seemingly a coordinated smear campaign going on across weibo, Twitter, YouTube and other platforms. The focus right now is accusations of Bang Pd and Hybe being associated with the Dahn World cult.
People are saying GFriend and Le Sserafim were used to spread cult messages and they are trying to connect it to BTS through Cyber University (where many idols goes btw). Akgaes and antis are also going after individual members. Especially Jimin, Jungkook and Yoongi.
This is one of the articles, written by one of the same Allkpop writers who dragged Jimin during FACE era: https://twitter.com/allkpop/status/1784464197868564781?t=sYUHfcXb-ceA_fJh1dchQA&s=19
BigHit came out with an announcement about hiring an external law firm to bring down whoever's behind this and spreading it. After this many of the original posters across Twitter started deleting their posts. But it's still everywhere.
Thank you for the summary of what's going on, Anon. Here's to you getting BTS concert tickets at a LOW price in 2025.
Okay, but I don't understand why this ended up with BTS being dragged into a mess that has nothing to do with them in the first place? This started with the lady from the coup, right? Why did BTS end up being the bad guys again? Why does BTS always end up being the villain of every K-pop story?
It makes sense that BigHit decided to hire an external legal team instead of using HYBE's or even their own agency's. Hopefully, they'll take action not only against people within Korea but also outside of it. It's about time BTS stopped being dragged into troubles that have nothing to do with them.
Also, people defending that lady just to attack BTS are truly pathetic.

Venezuelan security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets Monday at protesters challenging the reelection victory claimed by President Nicolás Maduro but disputed by the opposition and questioned abroad.
Thousands of people flooded the streets of several neighborhoods of the capital, chanting "Freedom, freedom!" and "This government is going to fall!"
Some ripped Maduro campaign posters from street posts and burned them.
AFP observed members of the national guard firing tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters, some wearing motorbike helmets and bandannas tied over their faces for protection. Some responded by throwing rocks back.
Maduro, 61, attended a meeting Monday at which the National Electoral Council (CNE) certified his reelection to a third six-year term until 2031.
He dismissed international criticism and doubts about the result of Sunday's voting, claiming Venezuela was the target of an attempted "coup d'etat" of a "fascist and counter-revolutionary" nature.
But opposition leader Maria Corina Machado later told reporters that a review of voting records available so far clearly showed that the next president "will be Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia," who took her place on the ballot after she was barred by Maduro-aligned courts.
The records showed a "mathematically irreversible" lead for Gonzalez Urrutia, she said, with 6.27 million votes to only 2.75 million for Maduro.
The elections were held amid widespread fears of fraud by the government and a campaign tainted by accusations of political intimidation.
Pollsters had predicted a resounding victory for the opposition.
In the early hours of Monday, the CNE said Maduro had won 51.2 percent of votes cast compared to 44.2 percent for Gonzalez Urrutia.
The opposition cried foul, prompting Attorney General Tarek William Saab to link Machado to an alleged cyber "attack" seeking to "adulterate" the results.
'Another fraud'
The outcome sparked concern and calls for a "transparent" process from the United Nations, United States, European Union and several countries in Latin America.
The CNE has not provided a detailed breakdown of the result.
Allies including China, Russia and Cuba congratulated Maduro.
Gonzalez Urrutia, a 74-year-old former diplomat, on Monday acknowledged the deep discontent in society with the CNE results and vowed that "we will fight for our liberty."
Machado assured Venezuelans that "the leaders of the world" are validating the results, and called families to turn out Tuesday for "popular assemblies" nationwide to show support for a peaceful transition of power.
Nine Latin American countries called in a joint statement Monday for a "complete review of the results with the presence of independent electoral observers."
The US-based Carter Center, one of a few organizations allowed to bring observers into Venezuela, urged the CNE to immediately publish detailed polling station-level results.
Brazil and Colombia also urged a review of the numbers while Chile's president said the outcome was "hard to believe."
Peru recalled its ambassador and Panama said it was suspending relations with Venezuela.
Caracas hit back Monday, saying it was withdrawing diplomatic staff from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay for "interventionist actions and statements."
'Bloodbath' warning
Independent polls had predicted Sunday's vote would end 25 years of "Chavismo," the populist movement founded by Maduro's socialist predecessor and mentor, the late Hugo Chavez.
Maduro has been at the helm of the once-wealthy oil-rich country since 2013. The last decade has seen GDP drop by 80 percent, pushing more than seven million of its 30 million citizens to emigrate.
He is accused of locking up critics and harassing the opposition in a climate of rising authoritarianism.
In the run-up to the election, he had warned of a "bloodbath" if he lost.
Ballots were cast on machines that sent electronic votes directly to a centralized CNE database.
The machines printed out paper receipts that were placed in a container and counted by hand as a backup measure meant to be open to public scrutiny.
The opposition had deployed about 90,000 volunteer election monitors nationwide.
Economic misery
Sunday's election was the product of a deal reached last year between the government and opposition.
That agreement led the United States to temporarily ease sanctions imposed after Maduro's 2018 reelection, rejected as a sham by dozens of Latin American and other countries.
Sanctions were snapped back after Maduro reneged on agreed conditions.
Venezuela boasts the world's largest oil reserves but has seen severely diminished production capacity in recent years.
Most Venezuelans live on just a few dollars a month, and endure biting shortages of electricity and fuel.
Economic misery in the South American nation has been a major source of migration pressure on the southern border of the United States, where immigration is a major presidential election issue.

Brian Tyler Cohen (12.30.2024):
As this volatile year nears its end, most of the talk being hurled around the incoming administration is minimally focused on plans for the country’s future, for better or for authoritarianism. Instead, it remains trained on MAGA’s adolescent civil war between Trump’s most vocal supporters and his co-president, Elon Musk. Musk’s honeymoon in the MAGA-sphere—though destined to combust—appears to be ending weeks before the administration has officially launched. While most of us were celebrating our holidays, Elon was holed up in some supervillain cyber vehicle, waging a fight with the very people whose voices and ideologies he spent months amplifying.
Trump created the problem, as is his way, by proposing the appointment of Srinam Krishnan, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist with whom Musk has consulted closely, as his senior policy advisor on AI. Putting forth Krishnan is apparently more outrageous than choosing an alleged sex offender and financial mismanager for defense secretary; a woman who’s been enthusiastically green-lit by the Kremlin for director of national security; or an anti-vaxxer (who dumped a bear he intended to eat in Central Park) to lead health and human services. But Krishnan caused the crater within MAGA this holiday season…because he’s a naturalized American citizen who was born in India and recruited here because of his tech expertise.
He’s remained here thanks to our H1B program, which offers visas to highly skilled foreign workers. Such a laudable program, which celebrates American values and could have been deftly supported, was instead publicly advocated for by Musk via increasingly hysterical posts capped with awkward attempts at wedging in sports references.
Like his co-president, Elon doesn’t handle criticism with a notable amount of grace.
Naturally, he was backed up by his fellow unelected co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Vivek Ramaswamy, who tweeted a tirade that delved into misplaced parenting advice while referencing shows like Saved by the Bell and Family Matters, to really drive home his point that…well, that remains unclear.
[...] Safe to assume that this fight is not going to end well. Or end at all. This is a hill that Elon will die on, for obvious reasons: He’s a former H1B visa immigrant who owns businesses that, no doubt, rely on H1B visa recipients to function. But it’s also a hill that the original MAGA faithful (you know, those who attempted a coup on our Capitol before the oligarchs became part of Trump’s traveling circus) will die on. Trump’s agenda is “America First.” His campaign handed out “Deport Them All” signs at rallies. So they were both fooled. The MAGA loyalists will take it worse, once they recognize (if they haven’t already) that they unwittingly installed into power an unelected foreign oligarch who’s going to use Trump to expand immigration programs that they hate. And there’s nothing they can do about it; Elon is the de facto president. Which is not to suggest that he is in a position of triumph. Remember, Musk is a sad little man who so desperately craves the rousing approval of the MAGA base that he spent the better part of a year nurturing them and doing performative jumping jacks for their applause. He needs their adulation; his ego depends on it. And now he’s facing off with those he presumed would be his footsoldiers. Perhaps he is only now becoming fully aware that they are immovable racists who were happy to accept financial help but don’t actually agree with his worldview. They want to elevate white Americans and no one else. So…nobody wins.
I sincerely hope this goes without saying, but the H1B program is an invaluable channel. We should absolutely bring the best and brightest talent to the United States. If we don’t welcome them here, that talent goes to other countries. In other words, there’s an “America First” incentive to continue investing in such programs. Of course, MAGA doesn’t care. For them, that brand is about promoting white Americans. It’s not concerned with helping the nation as a whole.
Brian Tyler Cohen gives an excellent breakdown on the MAGA-on-MAGA feud over H1-B Visas.

Cyberchase - An Interview With The Hacker by Reporter CyBob from "Cyborg Life!"
Sometime in 2003, the "Meet the Cybersquad" section of the Cyberchase section of the pbskids.org website was updated with more Hacker lore. This is an interview between the reporter CyBob from a publication called "Cyborg Life!"
I will transcribe the interview and give my thoughts at the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Foreward: He's the rascally cyborg about town, the virtual man with a a plan to rule Cyberspace. CYBORG LIFE! is proud to present the first and only interview with The Hacker, the wily villain of CYBERCHASE! Our intrepid report CyBob, met up with The Hacker in a scluded chat room over lattes to learn more about this ambitious rising star in the Internet firmament.
Cyborg Life!: Your exploits are the buzz of Cyberspace. You threw the symmetrical world of Symmetria into chaos, pilfered pods in Poddleville and nabbed an irregular area in the Sensible Flats land grab. You're a true man of mystery -- a celebrity. And our readers want to know more. Can I call you Hacker?
The Hacker: That's "THE Hacker" to you!
Cyborg Life!: THE Hacker, OK. How about just "The." But seriously, people everywhere want to know more about your outrageous quest to take over Cyberspace. What inspired you to take on this fascinating challenge?
The Hacker: Well, I'm glad you asked. As you know I have an extraordinary mind. My designs and prodigious programs helped build Cyberspace. Yet, Motherboard always took the credit. -- Would you mind taking your feet off the table when I speak? -- She lacked the villainous vision to bring my fantastic plot to its final fruition. I could see the potential in her operation. But, oh, how she squandered her power.
Cyborg Life!: It's not easy being in middle management I guess. But isn't Cyberspace Motherboard's domain? And isn't the renowned scientist Dr. Marbles the great innovative mind behind its most outstanding inventions? It says here that Dr. Marbles built you as an assistant to Motherboard, sort of a glorified techie. And that he later banished you to the Northern Frontier when you tried to stage a coup?
The Hacker: I was laid off! Marbles knew that with my considerable cranial talents I would soon be running all of Cyberspace. That's why he tried to get rid of me. But I would not be ignored.
Cyborg Life!: So you hatched a plan.
The Hacker: Yesssss, a plan. I created a nasty little virus to disable Motherboard causing her to lose much of her memory and functions. Now the virtual universe is in jeopardy! And I intend to step in to claim my predestined place as the rightful ruler. hen it will be all chaos and caviar for me!
Cyborg Life!: But something keeps getting in your way. Three things actually -- those three Earth kids -- Jackie, Matt, and Inez. You know, the Cyber Squad. Some people are calling them heroes.
The Hacker: heroes? Those insignificant insects can't stop me. Those diminutive gremlins are just a trio of white hats. They think they can hack THE HACKER?
Cyborg Life!: So, how does one get into a career as a supervillain?
The Hacker: Once I left Motherboard's operation, I began my own sinister start-up. There in the icy north, I built my awesome ship -- The Grim Wreaker -- as my vehicle to bring chaos to all of Cyberspace. Finally, I created my humble assistants, Buzz and Delete, a pair of tin plated duncebuckets though they may be. But together, they are almost competent enough to carry-out my most dastardly deeds. Of course, there's that cyber-stool pigeon Digit.
Cyborg Life!: Digit, isn't he with the Cyber Squad?
The Hacker: Yes, that supercilious cyber-turkey didn't have the stuff to make it as one of my henchman, so he flew the coop. Now he helps those three pre-teen terrestrial termites in their attempts to thwart my victories. That disloyal dodo will rue the day he ditched me and ran back to Motherboard. But let's talk about me. From the moment I first felt current flow through my circuits, I have craved power. Yes, power, power and more power. Dr. Marbles thought I would be content punching keyboard like some hackneyed pawn. Look at me, I am regal personage with a fine purple cloak and an elegant pocket protector. I am the one and only true leader of the virtual realm. I am THE HACKER!
Cyborg Life!: So, what are some of the highlights of your solo career?
The Hacker: Ah, yes, There was the time I set my sights on the Sunisphere of Solaria. With the Sunisphere in my grasp, Solaria was transformed from a sunny resort into a doomed winter wonderland and an unlimited source of energy was mine.
Cyborg Life!: Well, that's just fascinating. Here it is in my notes. But it seems those Earth kids and Digit managed to return the Sunisphere and restore Solaria to the tropical paradise it once was. and, let's see -- I know it's in my notes. Yes, they did it by -- er -- estimating? Is that right, they got the Sunisphere back on its perch by estimating?
The Hacker: Come on, it was a lucky shot. Then there was the time I joined forces with the Wicked Witch to capture the kindly king of Happily Ever After. An odious little site where fairy tale creatures amuse themselves with their annoying rhymes and songs. We were to capture the kingdom's stash of golden eggs, but Witchie tried to double-cross me. She case a spell on the sorry citizens of Happily fracturing their ability to count this preventing them from paying the king's ransom. But I was ultimately paid in full, enough goald to finance my hostile takeover of Cyberspace.
Cyborg Life!: Well, once again my notes seem to indicate that it was the Cyber Squad that taught the fairy tale folk how to count by tens and hundreds to meet your demand. And then they coaxed the Witch back to their side, and she took back the entire stash of golden eggs. is that true?
The Hacker: Excuse me. I have come here to tell you about my wondrous personage. Not for you to fawn over those thorns in my glorious side.
Cyborg Life!: Wow, what a story, brainpower wins the day. I have to make a note to my editor to do a piece on them.
The Hacker: That's enough! This interview is over. Goodbye!
Cyborg Life!: Wait Hack! Can't you tell me more about these smart kids and their friend Digit and all the clever ways that they one-up you all the time. Hackie, come back! Does this mean the press junket on the Grim Wreaker is out?
That is the end of the interview.
So, what do I think of it. I admire the balls on this reporter to meet The Hacker, the biggest villain in Cyberspace, in a secluded place for the interview. I also admire the balls on this reporter to setup the interview in a way that asks the important questions, even if it takes the interview in a direction that he Hacker doesn't want to go. Remember, that this is 2003 Hacker. His villain decay, and his plans centering on rehabilitating his image, largely hasn't happened yet.
It's interesting to see The Hacker's attempts at historical revision regarding the creation of Cyberspace. I think there is fan-fiction potential, which some people have already noticed, with the idea that The Hacker wasn't lying about doing the lion's share of the work to bring Cyberspace online.
I'm not sure what the "press junket on the Grim Wreaker" was supposed to be. They may just be using the term loosely here. A press junket is a term that is normally used in the film industry to refer to a period of interviews used to advertise the product, such as an upcoming film. I assume The Hacker isn't selling the Grim Wreaker himself, but then, what is he selling?

It’s Energon’s 20th Anniversary and coincidentally I’ve been watching old SuperLink subs during downtime. So still in a TF mood, I started indulging in an old thought about Alpha Q’s original form based on old production notes and my own ideas.
A personal headcanon is Planet Q was a colony planet populated by Transformers and a group of Quintessons from the failed Space Bridge program complete with its own Cyber Key. Forced to work together to survive on the desert planet, the descendants of both races managed to get along in a relative peace, with the latest ruler of the planet, the boy later known as Alpha Q, being the result of a botched coup attempt by an opportunistic Quintesson. The Grand Chamberlain, a mighty Transformer, visually similar to G1 Scorponok, was loyal the Alpha Q’s family before their deactivation, helped guide the little boy to be a mighty ruler. Like the original canon, Unicron emerged and decimated the planet, with the surviving Alpha Q kickstarting the Energon War between the Autobots and the Terrorcons, in order to revive Unicron enough to use his powers and the life giving properties of Energon to restore the planets eaten by Unicron.
The main difference, AU wise now, is Kicker succeeded in breaking through to Alpha Q’s true personality, shattering his Sharkticon armor, revealing the true boy hidden underneath. After being fully restored by some Omnicon Energon, Alpha Q goes on to survive and become a member of the Autobots, working with Kicker, his new big brother. A major weakness is Alpha Q can’t control the Terrorcons he specifically built, needing help to coax them into doing what he wants, as the Terrorcons don’t recognize him in his original state. One Terrorcon remains loyal to him though, the Divebomb named Blackout.
Personality wise, Alpha Q is identical to his hidden fifth face, speaking and acting like a young child, but bursts of his fractured personalities emerge when he’s flustered.

Someone explain to me why liberals love to cry about free speech so much. Fascists should not have the right to express themselves. Coup plotters should not have the right to express themselves. And a cyber crime is a cyber crime, therefore justice should have jurisdiction over digital space. If they are not stopped now, tomorrow we will wake up with a neo-fascist government.

"In government topplings of years past, takeovers involved seizure of government properties including TV stations & military command centers. In the coups of today, the takeovers instead involve control of computer & payment systems, which would allow the plotters to hold the nation hostage & usurp power from other branches of government. This is precisely what has already happened as the executive has sought to impound congressionally authorized funds."

My mortal kombat obsession came back with a roaring vengeance ever since mk1 came out, and I’ve been thinking of a rwby/mortal kombat fusion
Here’s my ideas for the major factions at play:
Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei: At some point in his war with Salem, Ozma (as the Great Kung Lao) happened upon two feuding ninja clans, and decided to unite them together to fight against her. For hundreds of years, the two clans helped Ozma but some within the Lin Kuei grew dissatisfied with their role. Salem took advantage of this and convinced these rogue elements to hijack the Lin Kuei and join her. The coup is successful and the Shirai Ryu get massacred, the Lin Kuei retreating to the Grimmlands to attain power in Salem’s “new world” and spite Ozpin. As a result of the setting change, the Cyber Lin Kuei become the Grimm Lin Kuei, with its members being transformed into Grimm Hybrids instead of robots. However, one Shirai Ryu remains, and he now seeks revenge…
Black Dragon: An ancient crime syndicate that has business in all four kingdoms, and indulges in everything criminal from petty theft to arms dealing. They prove to be a significant thorn in the side of both the White Lotus Society and the White Fang. While they are not officially allied, Salem is more than happy to hire them and take advantage of the chaos they cause.
Special Forces: Upon realizing Salem is starting to gather an army, Ozpin and Ironwood decide to found the Special Forces, a secret army of their own formed from individuals in all four kingdoms. After the Fall of Beacon, Ironwood takes control of the army, though most of the leaders end up defecting after he decides to abandon Mantle to die, and they eventually take over the remnants of Atlas’ army following the Fall of Atlas.
White Lotus Society: A composite faction of Ozpin’s faction from RWBY and the White Lotus Society from MK. This faction is essentially everyone who works for Ozpin.
Outworld: An unofficial “sixth” kingdom in upper Vacuo composed of territories conquered by General Shao Kahn. Once the leader of a group of raiders and bandits in Vacuo, Kahn used a mysterious artifact from Humanity 1.0 to empower his minions and form his nation, with his former raiding party as his enforcers. Now, they seek to find a way to spread their rule worldwide and ensure Kahn’s rule lasts forever.
Brotherhood of Shadow: A cult dedicated to worshiping Shinnok, a warlock from Humanity 1.0 who survived the GoD’s wipeout by transferring his soul into his Amulet. Using his power, the cult gave themselves magical abilities and now seeks to take over the world themselves.
I’m planning on posting the stories of significant characters in the future, but if anyone has any questions, I’d be REALLY excited to answer them. I haven’t been this hyped over an au/fic concept in a LONG time.

The FBI, working closely with an international team including the Czech and Baltic intelligence services, has helped link a series of international cyberattacks to a shadowy unit associated with the Russian secret service, the GRU.
According to a joint cybersecurity advisory report issued on Friday, the cyberattacks were undertaken by a group tied to Unit 29155 of the GRU.
Previously, the same unit has been blamed for an explosion at an ammunition site in 2014 in Vrbětice, deep in the Czech Republic’s southeast, as well as “attempted coups, sabotage and influence operations, and assassination attempts throughout Europe.”
However, in 2020, Unit 29155 expanded its portfolio “to include offensive cyber operations.”
Among other objectives, this offshoot group was used to collect information for espionage, cause reputational harm by stealing and leaking sensitive information, and destroying data.
“Unit 29155 cyber actors [are assessed] to be junior active-duty GRU officers under the direction of experienced Unit 29155 leadership,” said the report.
“These individuals appear to be gaining cyber experience and enhancing their technical skills through conducting cyber operations and intrusions,” it continued. Additionally, the report assessed that non-GRU officers had also been recruited, including known cybercriminals.
The unit is believed to be responsible for unleashing WhisperGate, a multi-stage wiper that has been deployed against the Ukrainian government, non-profit and tech organizations since January 2022. In addition to launching WhisperGate against Ukraine, the group has also targeted NATO states as well as countries in Latin America and Central Asia with its activity, including website defacements, infrastructure scanning, data exfiltration, and data leak operations. “Since early 2022, the primary focus of the cyber actors appears to be targeting and disrupting efforts to provide aid to Ukraine,” the report revealed. Furthermore, over 14,000 cases of domain scanning had also been recorded, with these impacting 26 NATO members and several other EU nations. “Whether through offensive operations or scanning activity, Unit 29155 cyber actors are known to target critical infrastructure and key resource sectors, including government services, financial services, transportation systems, energy, and healthcare sectors of NATO members, the EU, Central American, and Asian countries,” said the report. Led by the FBI, the investigative operation also involved teams from Britain, Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, and the Czech Republic. Together, their joint findings have enabled the Cybersecurity Advisory to develop tactics, techniques, and procedures to thwart further actions by Unit 29155.
