What if...Deadlock was a cyber cat?
Its common to see the big white/Grey feline carrying around a Bitty Ravage by their scruff quickly followed by a angry Soundwave who said he didn't have permission to take his Bitty.
Ratchet often wakes up during the night crushed by Lock who is loudly purring to the point its vibrating the whole berth. Ratchet is quietly wondering if this is how he dies while trying to push the cat off him.
Hot Rod often finds half eaten Electro Rats and other vermin in front of his Habsuite door. He once found a severed Servo that looked suspiciously like his one of his awful Exes Servo's. (No, he didn't ask his Carrier or Grandsire if they did it)
Overall I see cyber cat drift as a huge lovable menace.
Hope you enjoyed :D
Whoever you are thank you.
You can splurge your idea/this idea anytime you’d like.
You are a friend to my inbox lol
But seeing this is gold and something we as a fandom should look at, dissect and study and thrive in because it is gold.

Requesting IDW Megatron x Lost Light human liaison reader. Based on the song "Heaven's Light" from Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Thanks for the request! Sorry for such a long delay! I spent a lot of time writing and rewriting this because I wanted to get it right. I went with Autobot Megatron for this one. I hope that is okay with you! Feedback is always appreciated! :D
Heaven's Light
Pairing: IDW Megatron x Human Liaison Reader
Word Count: 3588
Tumblr media
Summary: Though he is now a hardworking Autobot aboard the Lost Light who's just trying to make up for the sins he's committed in his past, Megatron still believes he is a monster who is unworthy of ever being loved. That all changes when you, a little human liaison from Earth, makes your way into his life and implores him to reluctantly open his spark.
Tumblr media
Megatron knows he is a monster.
He has done horrible things. He has killed, he has tortured, he has maimed. His recharge cycles are plagued with the echoes of screams and the fallen frames of mangled bodies. He stands atop a pile of them. When he looks at his servos, they are drenched in wasted energon that isn’t his own. Nightmares, Rune calls them. Terrible warped memories of his past. He cannot escape them. The guilt will stain him forever.
Megatron is aware that most of the Lost Light’s crew is afraid of him. With the exceptions of others like the captain, most steer clear of his way. When they see him thumping down a hallway with steps that seem to shake the entire ship, they scurry like glitch mice when a cyber cat is near. They speak to him with tremors in their voices and rattling in their joints.
Not that he makes things easy for them, he admits. Megatron is aloof, calculating, and antisocial. His violent tendencies have devolved into simple growls and annoyed huffs. He’s not here to make friends. He’s here to do a job: atone for the sins he has committed.
And yet, the nightmares remain. They do not leave no matter what he does.
Megatron is not a gentle being. He knows he is rough around the edges, and that scares people. So when he hears the announcement about a human boarding the Lost Light, his first instinct is to avoid them at all costs. It does not matter if they are a liaison. Humans are fragile and too easy to break. And he hardly believes Earth wants their delegate to be interacting with the former Decepticon warlord who has slaughtered thousands.
Unfortunately, his dimwitted captain has different plans.
“No.” Megatron crosses his arms and lifts his chin defiantly. “Absolutely not.”
“Oh, come on.” Rodimus throws his helm back with an exasperated groan. “You're the perfect bot for the job! Why can’t you just say yes?”
“I did not board this ship to inevitably become a human babysitter.” Megatron’s words come out harsh and unyielding. “The answer is no, Rodimus. Get someone else to do it.”
“I agree,” Drift says. “In no way can I see this resulting in a positive outcome. Um…no offense Megatron.”
  Megatron snorts. “None taken.”
“You two don’t understand.” Rodimus rubs his forehelm in faux exhaustion. “The human is here to learn about Cybertronian history and culture. Who else knows more about that sort of stuff than you?”
Megatron bares his teeth. “Are you calling me old?”
“I’m calling you knowledgeable,” Rodimus shoots back. “You can tell the human so much about us, more than Drift or I could combined.”
“That is not my area of profession. Get Rewind to do it.”
“No,” Rodimus objects. “I want you to do it.”
“Rewind would be a much better option if we want this human to successfully integrate into the ship’s social life,” Drift advises.
Rodimus punches the other mech squarely in the shoulder plating. Drift yelps and jumps back. “Ow! What was that for?”
“Are you on my side with this or not?” Rodimus snaps.
“I’m on the side of wanting the human to like us, and I don’t believe pairing them with Megatron is the best way to achieve that! Again, no offense to Megatron, but we need to make a good impression.” Drift straightens and rubs his shoulder, wincing. “We have to think about this clearly, Rodimus.”
“I am thinking clearly. I am the most clear-thinking mech in this room. I have never been thinking clearer, and I don’t think I ever will.” He points at Megatron. “You are going to be this human’s companion for the next six cyber-weeks they are here. You will educate them on our ways, teach them our history, and convince them that we are awesome and amazing and incredible. Understand? Come on, remember their little human motto! ‘Salvation through understanding, understanding brings in the light!’ There’s no way you can say no to that!”
Megatron feels indignation churn within his tank. That indignation turns into something dangerous, something he has not been able to snuff out of himself completely since he’s turned over a new leaf. That something is hostility borne from the frustration of being told to do something he doesn’t want to do. He snarls, but Rodimus does not cower. The red-and-orange mech’s plating bristles and clacks together in an act of instinctual dominance. The two leaders stare each other down in a silent battle. It takes Drift being the middle-man to relieve some of the tension crackling between them. “Alright, enough! Both of you stop right now! The human is going to be here at any moment, and you want their first impression of you two to be this? Calm down and get a hold of yourselves!”
Megatron scoffs. Without looking at either of them, he shoulders past Drift towards the door. “I will do as you say, Rodimus,” he rumbles. “But don’t you think I will enjoy a second of it. You are making a mistake.”
He hears Drift whisper “This is a bad idea” to the captain. Megatron stomps off, ignoring how every mech around him presses themselves against the walls to avoid his path. They should have chosen Rewind.
Tumblr media
You are…not what Megatron was expecting.
You arrive on the ship with a swagger in your step and not an ounce of nervousness within you. Your eyes are wide with awe and your little dermas are split in a wide open smile as you turn in a circle to take everything in. There’s something distinctly adorable about the way you shift the weight of your stuffed backpack from one shoulder to the other and drag a tiny little suitcase behind you that makes the softer side of Megatron want to say “Awwww.” Apparently he isn’t the only one either; Rodimus is smiling like an idiot, his servos fidgeting like he wants to scoop you up and coo at you dotingly.
Drift elbows him. He snaps to attention and announces himself grandly, which makes Megatron want to cringe. “Liaison Y/N! So good to finally meet you in person! Welcome to the Lost Light!” He kneels and extends his servo with surprising mindfulness. “I am Rodimus Prime, captain of this ship.”
Your smile widens when you hold the tip of his index digit between both of your little fleshy servos and shake it. “I am honored to be here, captain.”
“The honor is all ours. And please, just call me Rodimus. You're one of us now. There’s no need for formalities.” Rodimus rises and gestures to Drift. The red-and-white mech steps forward and dips his head while he is introduced. “This is Drift, my third-in-command. And this is Megatron, my…co-captain.”
Megatron keeps his expression neutral when he steps forward to loom over you like a mountain. You have to crane your neck back in order to take all of him in. Here we go, he thinks. Any moment now, you’ll recognize his name. You’ll retreat to a safe distance. Maybe even start screaming in fear. He shouldn’t be surprised. After all, he is Megatron, feared former leader of the Decepticons, one of the most ruthless and terrifying beings in the-
Your smile does not waver and your attitude remains just as bright. “Megatron. It’s wonderful to meet you. I’m Y/N.”
It takes a moment for him to register your words. Wait, what?
Rodimus coughs and eyeballs him critically. “Oh.” Megatron blinks. “Um. Yes. Hello. It’s wonderful to, uh, meet you too.”
Drift snickers. He wants to punch him.
“I apologize for his flustered state.” Rodimus laughs nervously. “We’re all just very excited to have you on board. This is the first time much of the crew will be meeting a human, so I hope you’ll understand that some of us might not know how to interact with you.”
“It’s no problem,” you say. “I get it. But that’s why I’m here! So if you are curious about me, then I encourage it.”
Rodimus relaxes, looking relieved. “Yes, of course! We’re connecting two worlds! It’s absolutely incredible.”
“If anyone makes you actively uncomfortable though, please let one of us know,” Drift adds. “We understand that there is a clear power imbalance between you and all of us. It’s important that you feel safe here.”
“Well, that’s why Megs is going to be your partner during your time here!” Rodimus grabs Megatron’s shoulder and shakes him. It takes all of his strength not to growl. “You're here because you want to know more about us, right? Well, my co-captain is extremely knowledgeable in all things Cybertronian. He’ll do his best to answer any and all questions you might have!”
You show no trepidation over this. In fact, your eagerness only seems to grow. Megatron is honestly stunned. “Oh, absolutely, I’d love that! As long as it’s okay with you?” You look back at him inquiringly.
He starts to object, but Rodimus slams his servo over his intake. “He’s totally okay with it! He volunteered, after all! And he’ll start with showing you to your habsuite with Drift, so you can take all the time you need to settle in!”
Your concerns are soothed. Taking up your suitcase, you follow Drift and leave the docking bay, with the other mech walking at a turtle’s pace in order to stay in tandem with you. Megatron rips Rodimus’s servo away from his intake. “You,” he hisses, “are the bane of my very existence.”
Rodimus shrugs. “I can live with that title. But seriously, I’m doing you a favor right now. Enough with the brooding miserableness and more with the reinventing yourself. I’m trying to help you feel more at ease here. If you start with the human, you may find yourself actually being gentle.”
He snarls, and for the first time in a long while wonders if he can get away with killing one last Autobot. But when he looks at you and sees the way you smile up at Drift with so much young excitement…something in him softens.
Tumblr media
“So, I was told you know a lot about Cybertronian culture,” you say to him. Drift is long gone, and your habsuite is set up to house all of your accommodations. You sit back on the miniature berth covered with blankets and pillows, thin legs swinging idly while you regard him with a curious look. He glances at you fleetingly, then returns his gaze to the data pad he’s holding.
  “That I do,” he answers.
  “Mind telling me some stuff?”
Your question is blunt and to the point. There’s no hesitation. You don’t look the least bit afraid. For a moment, Megatron wonders if you even know who he is. You just seem so…clueless. Did your human superiors really give you no sort of debriefing on who you would be dealing with here before you left?
“What do you want to know?” he asks reluctantly.
“I want to know about turbo foxes,” you reply.
He stares at you. Then he bursts into raucous laughter that causes his entire frame to shake. You throw your hands up in feigned exasperation, grinning like an idiot. “What? What did I say?”
“You said nothing wrong, little one.” He manages to calm himself down, shaking his head while still chuckling. “I just…I was expecting you to ask about the war.”
“Why would I ask you about that?”
“Because that is what everyone wants to know about. The war is essentially a defining factor of our history and culture. Our image cannot exist without it.”
You shrug. “I can learn about the war from anyone. I already have. But turbo foxes? I’ve only read a single paragraph about those. They sound so cute! You have to tell me more.”
“Wait.” He pauses, confused. “You…you’ve learned about the war?”
“Of course I have,” you reply. “Like you said, it’s part of your history and culture. Who hasn’t at this point?”
“So…you know who I am. Megatron. Me. You’ve learned about me.”
“Yes?” You tilt your head. “I don’t know what this has to do about turbo foxes.”
“No, it-it has nothing to do with them. I just-” He sighs, rubbing his optics in a tired way. “I just don’t understand why you haven’t acknowledged the fact that you know me. You know what I’ve done. You know what I’m capable of continuing to do.”
“I haven’t acknowledged it because it’s not worth acknowledging.”
“That is absurd. Of course it is worth acknowledging. I am Megatron. I’m the former leader of one of the most feared armies known throughout the universe.”
  “Former leader,” you say.
“That-” He sputters. He isn’t sure where you are going with this; you’ve thrown him for a loop. “That has nothing to do with the current situation.”
“Yes it does.” You stand up. “You used to be the leader of the Decepticons. You’ve killed, you’ve destroyed. But you don’t do that anymore. So now here we are.”
“You are okay with completely looking past everything I have done? You're just going to…ignore it?”
“No.” You take slow steps towards him. “I’m not. I’ve done my research on you. I understand that you’ve done terrible things. But I also know that you're trying to make up for all of that. You're good now. Being here, helping me…I know you're trying to be better. I appreciate that.” You hold up your hands. He understands, yet hesitates to fulfill your wish. You have to encourage him. “Come on, it’s okay. You won’t hurt me.”
He bends down and extends his servo. “How can you be so sure?”
You hold his index digit and bring the tip to your cheek, allowing him to caress the soft organic skin of your face. You are so small, so delicate, so carefully made. Megatron isn’t caught up on the stories about the gods of your world, yet he knows-he can feel it-that whatever being made you put so much care and love into their work, he is sure their power rivals Primus himself. His walls crumble. He wants to hold you forever.
“I’m sure because I trust you,” you say. “And when you earn the trust of someone you can so easily hurt…you know you are good.”
Tumblr media
  Six weeks later…
Swerve’s bar is filled with life. Megatron hears it all the way from the deserted hallway he sits in. The laughter, cheers, and songs echo like the hauntings of spirits. Yet, he feels no urge to join in. The bench he sits on is as cold as space. He’s sure he can feel the chilling void through the large observation window he’s in front of right now.
The soft pitter patter of human feet turns his attention away from the window. He sees you heading towards him with cheeks flushed red and a stupid smile. His olfactory sensors pick up on the faint scent of alcohol sticking to your skin when you make it over to him.
  “Are you drunk?” he asks.
“A little,” you reply. A soft pat to his pede signals what you want. He gives it to you, scooping you up into a gentle hold and placing you on his right tibulen. You lean against him with a soft exhale. “Why didn’t you come join us?”
He lifts his gaze to the window. “I’m not a big drinker.”
“Oh. Well, that’s okay. Neither am I.”
The warmth of your little body is comforting. It makes him want to focus on you. Yet, he can’t manage to do so. It’s such a foolish situation; him, of all mechs, so infatuated with this little human, he can barely look at them.
But it goes beyond that. He knows it does. So do you. Six weeks are nearly over. Your time here will soon be done.
He doesn’t know how to handle that anymore.
“Why did you leave Swerve’s?” he chooses to ask you, because if he brings up the topic of you leaving, he thinks he’s going to lose control of his emotions.
“I wanted to be with you.”
He snorts. “I hardly think a party being thrown in your honor is worth leaving in exchange for spending time with some old bot.”
“Oh, please. You aren’t just some old bot to me. I like being around you. Is that so hard to believe?”
He smiles humorously. “You might be the only one on this ship who does.”
You don’t respond, and Megatron fears he might have offended you in some way. When he looks at you, he sees your shoulders slump and your head hang like you are mourning the dead.
  “I’m leaving soon,” you murmur.
  “...I know.”
“I asked my superior if I could stay.” You draw your knees to your chest and hug them. “I begged him. Another week. Hell, another day. But he wouldn’t give in. Fucking asshole…he knows I’ve gotten attached.”
“Getting attached was the point of you coming here.”
“I know. But…not like this.” An invisible chord tightens around your little body. He can tell your composure is crumbling. “This…wasn’t something I was trained for.”
His spark aches painfully. If he were younger, he’d do something rash; threatening your superior would have been his first course of action. If that didn’t work, he’d steal you away and whisk you off to the far reaches of space, away from Earth, away from anything or anyone who might prevent the two of you from being together.
But he’s not his younger self. He’s old. He’s tired. So he simply heaves a sigh and lifts his optics to the stars. “You know…so many times out there, I’ve watched a happy pair of lovers walking in the night.”
You lift your head and look at him. There are tears in your eyes. Megatron rumbles out a deep purr and reaches for you, gently maneuvering you into his servos and lifting you up to his faceplate. You lean forward and place a tiny hand on his nose.
“What were they like?” you ask quietly.
“They had a kind of glow to them,” he responds with a sense of wistfulness. “It almost looked like…Heaven’s light.”
That makes you giggle. “How the hell do you know what Heaven is?”
“Lets just say I’ve done my research,” he answers with a smile.
You lightly tap his nose with your fist. “Sap.” Your expression falls into a contemplative frown. “What were you thinking when you saw them? The lovers? Were you jealous?”
“Well…not exactly. Jealousy isn’t the right word to describe it. But…I envied them. I wanted to be like them. But I knew I’d never know that warm and loving glow, though I might wish with all my might.” He closes his optics, steadying his breaths. He doesn’t want to cry, not in front of you. “No face as hideous as my face…was ever meant for Heaven’s light.”
You open your mouth to retort, not at all willing to listen to him put himself down. That’s one of the things he loves about you. No matter who it is, you will always step in to make someone feel better. It’s a quality many Cybertronians are lacking, yet it abounds in humans plentifully.
He had been wrong about your kind, back when he was still the leader of the Decepticons. You are so much more beautiful than you realize.
Megatron cuts you off gently with a low puff of air into your face from his nose. You sputter and stumble back, and he laughs. His thumb comes up to stroke your hair, then travels down to trace the outline of your jaw. You still, eyes widening when you see the lovesick look he’s giving you. “But suddenly an angel has smiled at me…you, little one. Come on, smile.”
There’s no sharp-witted reply from you to make him chuckle. You just obey him and smile. His spark skips a beat and he feels like he is going to melt right then and there. “You are the only one to smile at me in this way,” he whispers. “And you…you’ve touched my face without a trace of fright.”
“I could never be afraid of you,” you say. You press yourself against his nose, hugging him in the best way you can. He feels you trembling. “I’ve dreamt of this. I’ve dreamt of you. I still dream. I dare to dream that you might even care for me…”
Megatron leans into your touch. “My cold dark tower seems so bright…I swear it must be Heaven’s light.”
There is silence between you for some time. The noise from Swerve’s bar has faded away. You sniffle and don’t pull away. “Stay with me,” you beg.
“You know I can’t,” he says. “Not forever.”
“Then just for tonight. For as long as we have left. Stay with me, please. I don’t want to let you go. I love you.”
“You don’t have to.” He hugs you with his free servo. “Not right now. I’m here. I love you too. You are the only one I will ever love. My Heaven’s light.”
“Salvation through understanding,” you sob, tears streaming down your cheeks. Yet, you are smiling. It’s a grateful smile. A smile that tells him you are so, so lucky to have ever met him at all.
His optics well up. He lets the walls break. “Understanding brings in the light.”
Megatron knows he is a monster.
But after meeting you…he knows he’s a monster who’s worthy of receiving love.

So I watched a Deltarune theory like last night on YouTube (Deltarune’s Dark Worlds EXPLAINED by Lore Keeper) that said that the Dark Worlds are created by the lightners and the darkners are just whatever objects are in the room and the history of the dark world is based on the history of the objects in the room where the world is created and honestly while that’s the simplest option for what’s happening i gotta say I wasn’t really fully convinced and have never been full convinced with that explanation.
That works well for explaining why the darkners and dark worlds show up as they do, and even explains the history of the individual worlds, but not so much the connections between the worlds. Queen and Spade King know each other, jevil references Queen in some of his dialogue post fight (if you fight him anyway), and Spamton seems to be aware of Jevil (although I’ll admit that kinda has always been dubious). Also Ralsei just shows up in Cyber World, we don’t take him with us, so how did he get there if there wasn’t a way to visit other dark worlds via the dark world itself.
However there’s one thing that really gets me and weirdly enough it’s in the spamton sweepstakes. It gave us an instance of Noelle accidentally put Pipis in her Cat Petters video game and generally Noelle has a connection to dark world related stuff or stuff that could be related to the dark worlds. Seriously the Spamton sweepstakes seemed to have focused heavily on Noelle which makes me think there’s something here we’re missing. (And also that Noelle is incredibly important, but thoughts for another day.)
All of this makes me think that the dark worlds have to exist without the dark fountains in some capacity. After all, if these worlds didn’t exist before they were created, how did the worlds of light and dark stay in balance? The dark worlds really shouldn’t exist period if they didn’t exist before last Thursday if you catch my drift. And we know that all of these events are actually happening and aren’t just some imaginary world the kids are going into, so what’s the real answer?
The information really only seems to contradict itself. The darkners and dark worlds can’t exist without the lightners, so why is it possible for the lightners to seemingly exist without the darkners? Without knowing that they can create these worlds? This would completely change how most people see the world, people would be studying this and how it’s possible. Noelle and Berdly wouldn’t think it was a dream, they would know it was real. That doesn’t seem like balance to me. It could only be balance if the dark worlds exist without light world intervention.
The only way I can rationalize this is that the dark worlds really are worlds, or one continual world with different kingdoms that are connected to the light world and maybe even the darkners themselves exist in some capacity in those worlds. After all we know the dark world has some influence on lightners, note Susie, Kris, Noelle, and Berdly having different clothes in the dark world and the monsters of the group are able to use magic in the dark world, which doesn’t seem to be something that monsters are able to do in the light world. (Seriously what’s with monsters not using the magic we know they should be born with, that’s really weird.)
I think what makes the darkners consider the lightners Gods and what makes them think they are made for them is that the darkners mold themselves to wherever the portal (the fountain) is created. Like how the dark world molds the kids and the room into something else without effecting their base personality and contents, the light world molds the darkners physically without effecting their base history and personalities. The objects are only a form for the darkners to take and gives them object memory, but aren’t the objects themselves. In that sense, you could argue the darkners were made for the lightners because they take the form of the light world more readily, but we can’t forget how the dark world effects the light world.
They are made for each other, but something about their intrinsic natures make it hard to come together without everything falling apart. It’s kinda tragic.
Of course I could also be talking out of my ass. Idk here’s my thoughts. Let me know your thoughts. Like and subscribe

Hi are you into catformers dratchrod?
Hello!
I like catformers in the sense that everyone transforms into a cyber cat like Ravage or Cheetor. That would be so flipping cool to have Megatron and Optimus Prime transform into these massive mechanical feline beasts when they fight. Drift is this sleek, dangerous cyber cat with adorably large ears, Rodimus is just a cyber cat on fire, and Ratchet is a larger mechanical feline that has a wireless connection to a hovercraft in case of emergencies.
There was also that time Tarantulas mastered animal camouflage, so Dratchrod could look like organic feline species from earth while still being Cybertronians (if Tarantulas is involved, they're probably not happy about their new ability).
Catformers that are just earth cats are definitely cute, the art for them on Tumblr is adorable, but it's not my cup of tea.

Note
for the ask meme, from "rip me to pieces, rock me to sleep":
On a normal day, Rodimus would set his triple barrel forearm lasers onto their lowest setting and shoot indiscriminately, because Drift’s got enough war-era reinforcement mods to both his outer armour and his internals that he’ll feel those as nasty stings, but such shots would probably kill the organic bird, or at least injure it, and Rodimus would be able to apologise to Drift later.
It’s not a normal day, and the thread Rodimus has been hanging on since late last night snaps at the sight of Drift in so much danger.
No! Rodimus’ instincts scream, railing and writhing in that nonsense code that makes too much sense. This one is mine!
He’s transformed before he knows it, but it feels so right. With a satisfying ripple of fulfilment and catharsis, Rodimus’ frame twists and turns in grotesque ways, and he’s upon the alien bird in a whirl of denta and claws, matching a bellowing roar to its high-pitched shrieking.
Hollow bones crunch and feathers fly everywhere as a couple of Rodimus’ mouths fill with bitter organic blood and his digits dig into flailing flesh and start to rip. The alien bird screeches, turns away from Drift to try and fight Rodimus, but it’s no use. A clawed hand with the digits elongated with at least one extra knuckle joint clasps around the racing heart of the alien bird and squeezes down. They both fall to the sloping rocky ground in a cloud of feathers and dust, orange blood splattering up Rodimus and leaking out to puddle around them.
He heaves in a few vents and rises, hovering in the air because who the hell even knows where his legs go in this form? He can feel Drift’s stare on his back – can see it, even, because he has more optics pointing in more directions than he knows what to do with, practically a perfect sphere of visual input from every direction filtering into his processor. His plating crawls, flaring up and overlapping like a cyber-cat or a turbo-fox making a threat display. And yet, even now, his circuits sing with how right this form feels, no matter the empty space going right through him being framed by the new shape of his chest, where the Matrix is supposed to sit but doesn’t.
“Rodimus?” comes Drift’s voice, a bit shaky.
Hey, Space!! :D
Okay, so. I wrote this with the thought in mind that Rodimus has, at this moment, reached his absolute limit. He’s tired, he’s stressed, his Prime instincts are far too close to the surface for comfort, and this is very much the straw that breaks the camel’s back – Drift getting hurt (specifically: getting killed) is one of his worst nightmares.
He would be protective of any of his friends, but the Prime instinct heightens that right into possessiveness as well: this one is mine. At this moment, logic is lost – he rips apart the alien bird with his bare hands, because that’s the only way it feels personal and aggressive enough to satiate his Prime instincts. This thing is now his prey, and only death is an appropriate answer for its actions against Drift.
I really wanted a moment where it’s clear that this change that Rodimus underwent is spark-deep. It’s not just physical: it’s emotional, it’s mental, and it’s entirely rearranged how he perceives and reacts to the world. This is why there’s a whole paragraph about a “normal day” vs right here and right now.
Rodimus’ thoughts in this moment are mostly blank for this extract. He’s basically seeing red. In the last part, he comes back to himself enough to be able to perceive his actions through the lens of an outsider, and since he’s not comfortable with this form - and how right this form feels when everything he’s been raised with basically says “no, wrong, monster” - he feels very self aware of it. This also conveniently gave me a perfect opportunity for a physical description without derailing Rodimus’ internal narrative.
He even pre-emptively fears Drift’s reaction, hence his plating rising in a threat display, making himself appear bigger. He’s not in physical danger, and his instincts are purring at one of his so close, so this is an emotion-induced response. The additional emphasis on the Matrix being missing draws attention to the fact that it’s not only supposed to be there, it’s supposed to be central, front and centre, literally framed. It’s supposed to be the equivalent of Rodimus’ missing crown.
As for Drift, this is the very first time he’s seen Rodimus’ true form, the thing that’s been tormenting him for years, the thing that Drift has been trying to help him with – even if he didn’t know what the issue was specifically – for that same time.
It’s a frightening sight, make no mistake about it, but as Cybertronians used to be split into tribes led by a Prime, there is no hindbrain “get that away from me” reaction – because on some level, Drift’s instincts recognise that Rodimus is not unnatural. There’s a part of Drift that says, “Feel safe. Prime is here. I’m safe.” This is tempered, however, by the fact that Drift has been a soldier in a pan-galactic four million year war and has Seen Some Shit (Most Of Which Was Trying To Kill Him).
It should, of course, be noted that even in the midst of his fear and confusion, the first thing Drift says is “Rodimus?” He knows who Rodimus is, he recognises his friend in this creature that just showed up (since he did not get a very good view of the transformation itself from his place on the ground, though he heard it). He doesn’t back away, or draw his weapon. He seeks to confirm and to understand.
I felt, with their history being what it is, and for how long Drift has been “the monster” of people’s stories, that this was the way to go. Drift is weak to the one-dimensional monster not being a one-dimensional monster if you just try to understand, because he knows better than most that even monsters are people too.
Hope you enjoyed this insight :)

What non k-pop artists do you listen to ? Could you recommend some of theirs songs?
My music taste  is somehow all over the place but at the same time not as diverse as it could be.  Also I’m sorry this list is obnoxiously long. I actually don’t really listen to kpop that much anymore,  Only NCT, EXO, Straykids and Occasionally Blackpink. I had a whole breakdown in 2014 and denounced kpop and only kept EXO til 2016 when NCT debuted.

Hectic
Life is hectic. People need to run everywhere and be in different places, no one ever just sits down and relaxes anymore. Kenma knows life is hectic, and with two boyfriends it means his life is twice as crazy. It also means it’s twice as loving and Kenma doesn’t mind waiting a little bit for those moments.
Words: 8.5k
Chapters: 4
Relationships: Kurokenyaku
Warnings: None
Read below or on AO3, Don’t forget to reblog!
Mornings are hectic. There’s no nice way to put it, no matter how many times Kenma thought it over. There’s no peaceful awakenings like there had been when his boyfriends were in college. Sometimes, if he was lucky, one of them would have the day off and no morning plans and he could relax with them at least while the other ran off.
Already he could hear their voices from the kitchen. Mori was arguing with someone, probably over the phone. Tetsuro was calling out jovially, the barest hint of Sawamura’s voice drifting through the wall. Their two cats were calling angrily for their food bowl, the last one on Kenma’s back. Docosahexaenoic just curled up tighter when Kenma shifted, uncaring about the bright white hair she was shedding or the claws in his skin.
Kenma sighed, pulling the blankets further over his head. He could still feel the warmth of Mori’s spot behind him, could smell the rich scent of Tetsuro’s fruity shampoo, and his chest ached. He wanted them here, with him.
Sure, he knew they had their jobs and his was easier. He did what he loved every day, with only occasional meetings for his company and the rest was done over Skype or email. Yet he wanted nothing more than to just wake up with his clingy and snoring boyfriends and lay with them.
“Kenma~” Tetsuro’s voice came through with a crack of the door opening. “Hey, hon. Get up, you have a meeting today at three and you need to eat.”
“No.” Kenma pulled the blanket down just enough to stick his tongue out and covered himself back up.
“I can tell you’re a very mature and grown up adult.” Tetsuro said dryly and Kenma immediately rolled himself tighter into the blanket, more then well aware that Tetsuro would rip the blankets off otherwise.
“Make Sawamura go to my meeting. He’s mature and grown up.” Kenma grumbled. It was the new year, which meant it was payroll time which meant he was going to have to keep himself from firing everyone who wanted to give themselves raises without offering raises to anyone else.
“Sawamura~ has to keep people safe in Miyagi, he can’t come all the way up here because a certain Kitten doesn’t want to get out of bed before noon.” Tetsuro hummed, fingers poking around Kenma’s wrapped form, looking for a weakness in the blanket. The cat hissed before submitting herself to Tetsuro’s petting and jumping off the bed to join her siblings.
“It’s seven am, the meetings not till three.” Kenma complained.
“Yes but Morisuke won’t be back until late and might have to spend the night at work-“ Tetsuro started, pulling back as the blanket monster started to wriggle free.
“Why didn’t you just say that?” Kenma sighed, slipping out of the blanket and reaching out for Tetsuro to take his arms and pull him the rest of the way from the bed.
“Why does that work? I have literally begged and pleaded and you’ve refused to get out of bed. I can’t believe this entire time Mori was your favorite.”
Kenma gave him the driest look he had in his arsenal. He didn’t stand even as Tetsuro had to shift his hold to keep him up at head height. Even five years out of highschool, Tetsuro’s bed head was still untamed and Kenma wondered if he’d be upset if they shaved his head in the middle of the night. Not too much, maybe an undercut… Or copying Yamamoto’s mohawk.
“I thought it was obvious from the beginning.” Kenma said, rolling his eyes at Tetsuro’s gasp of betrayal. Kenma finally pulled his legs under him, standing up and pulling away from his taller boyfriend and making his way to the dining room.
Morisuke had four papers in his hand, his phone pressed in his ear as he tapped away at his computer. His brow was creased in genuine annoyance as he growled out a response and tried to fight the cat food bag at the same time.
“I don’t care if I have the copies, you need to be more responsible with the paperwork or else it will be your ass I’ll be handing to Hanamaki Eiichi when he comes looking for someone to fire when we lose this case.” Mori glanced up at the sound of their footsteps. His gaze softened, lips twitching up into a gentle smile. He put the papers down and leaned up to press a kiss to Kenma’s forehead, arm moving up to lead the sleepy head onto his shoulder. He stroked through his long hair, tilting his head to kiss Tetsuro gently.
“Look. You take what I just emailed you. You print them. Get them signed and if you’re not done by the time I get there then I’d better not see you until you are.” Morisuke hung up without waiting, gently scratching at Kenma’s scalp. “I swear Sato-san lives to make my life hell. Go sit down Kenma, I’ll grab breakfast.”
Kenma groaned comically, lips twitching slightly at the chuckle he got from both of them. Tetsuro’s hands moved to his hips, leading him over to the table as Morisuke disappeared behind the wall. He returned a moment later, one plate held up where the curious cats couldn’t jump to try and eat it before Kenma could.
Tetsuro took the plate and slid it in front of Kenma before turning and tilting Morisuke’s chin up. Kenma leaned back against his chair, head on his hand as he watched, carefully feeding a piece of chicken to one of the cats. Kirby’s giant mouth reminded Kenma a bit of Lev, and he considered officially changing the Russian Blue’s name to Lev.
“I’ll bring dinner by later, ‘round seven. So let me know if you start craving anything. I gotta go already, school waits for no man.” Tetsuro hummed, kissing him lightly before Morisuke reached up and cupped his face. Mori didn’t let go, dragging out the kiss before finally letting him go, a smile on both of their lips.
“Bento is in the fridge, actually eat it this time. Don’t forget to text your dad and tell Bokuto we’ll see him next week and stop calling Sawamura just to harass him, he has enough shit to deal with.” Morisuke grumbled, straightening Tetsuro’s shirt. Tetsuro just laughed, kissing his head and moving closer to Kenma.
“Were you watching us kiss? You pervert.” Tetsuro gasped, snickering when Kenma swatted at his face. He caught his hand and pressed a kiss to the palm before leaning in and kissing him fully on the lips.
Kenma melted, kissing back and wanting the moment to last forever. Medical school was Tetsuro’s dream, well other than somehow making his own fungus that was a rainbow that he could name himself but Kenma wasn’t holding out on that dream coming true. He knew Tetsuro had to go, and yet... he kissed a little deeper, a little needier before Tetsu’s hands both folded over his own and he pulled away.
“I’ll see you later Kitten.” Tetsuro murmured, eyes gentle and warm as he leaned in to kiss his forehead once. He let go, looking like he didn’t want to leave anymore than Kenma wanted him to. Then he turned and disappeared into the kitchen, the sound of the fridge opening and closing before Kenma and Mori could hear him leaving. One cat watched him before turning back to her other humans, curious as to why they still weren’t being fed. Kenma didn’t really know how to explain that the other food bowls were filled it was just the one in the kitchen that was empty but he doubted they would care even if he could explain.
“You gotta go too?” Kenma asked, burying his chopsticks into his rice. Of course Mori did, but sometimes he’d stay at-least until Kenma was done with breakfast. Mori’s face dropped slightly, reaching out to cup Kenma’s face and gently cradle his cheek.
“Unfortunately. I’m sorry love. I’d stay home if I could, but this case is major. It took us two years to prove the cyber attacks came from our competitor and if we don’t get everything taken care of we’re going to be out who knows how much money and they’re just going to do it all over again. Once this case is over though, I am taking a vacation. Me and you, get to hang around and do absolutely nothing and mock Tetsuro for having to put effort into things.” Mori teased, thumb gently tracing his bottom lip before Mori leaned in and kissed him. It was shorter than Tetsuro’s, Morisuke actually had self control and wasn’t as easy to distract, but it was soft and Mori peppered three more across his cheeks and nose.
“I have to go, Kenma.” Mori murmured, fingers finally dropping off his face. He turned away, grabbing papers and closing his laptop.
He hesitated in the doorway and turned back to Kenma, looking at him affectionately. He tilted his head and smiled softly at him, a gentle one that had Kenma feeling like putty even in a chair. How long had they worked together for this? Mornings together and laced with love instead of heartbreak trying to stay apart from each other.
“I love you, Kenma. I’ll see you as soon as I can.” Mori said, then he was hurrying out the door, leaving Kenma alone with the cats. Two caterwauls rose up and Kenma sighed, burying his hand in the bag and pouring a small handful into the dish. Immediately all three of them rushed over... and then walked away.
Yes mornings were hectic. But he wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Chapter 2
“Kenma~ Kenma~ Kenma~” Tetsu’s voice came through the house, getting louder and dripping with annoyance though Kenma could easily hear the smile on his face. The sound of the refrigerator closing echoed through the house and Kenma turned to face his probably smiling boyfriend. Sure enough, Tetsuro was grinning when he poked his head into Kenma’s computer room.
“Are you aware,” Kenma drawled, leaning back in his chair to look at his boyfriend, “that just because you get more annoying does not mean I’m more likely to pay attention?”
“Weird, because I’m pretty sure I annoyed you into being my boyfriend.” Tetsuro snickered, a hyena like cackle coming from him before he was stepping up behind Kenma. He tilted his head and planted a kiss on Kenna’s forehead, sticking out his tongue when Kenma glowered at him.
“Perhaps you did.” Kenma rolled his eyes, making sure to accent it to annoy his boyfriend. Tetsuro didn’t seem to care, however, simply stepping more to his side and leaning down to kiss him.
Kenma grabbed onto his arm, fingers sliding over the rough material of his sweater, and used him to swing the chair around. He wrapped his legs around Tetsuro’s waist, arms reaching up and around his neck and resting them there as their lips brushed.
Kenma relaxed after a moment, pulling Tetsuro as close as he could and burying his face in his neck. The sweet scent of cherries still lingered on his skin from his late night shower and Kenma couldn’t help but nuzzle closer. Tetsuro grunted and put out a hand against the chair to stop himself from falling, but he didn’t push away. Instead, Kenma felt his nose on his hair gently brushing against the bleached strands moments before a gentle kiss was being pressed there.
Kenma missed this, missed having one of his boyfriends just an arms length away. He ached for the days of walking through the apartment to cuddle against one of their sides when it got to be too much to be alone.
He didn’t mind being alone, in fact he loved it. Leave him alone with his games and some food and he’d be fine for hours, content with his own company and the occasional text from Shoyo or Tora. It was the day after day loneliness that got to him, when he couldn’t remember the last time he’d spoken out loud or heard someone call his name. When his boyfriends rose before him and returned after he was asleep and all he had for proof of their existence was bentos in the fridge and well fed cats. When his skin prickled from lack of touch, craving the heat from another person and the gentle stroke from hands in his hair.
“You okay, kitten?” Tetsuro murmured softly, his free hand moving to run soothingly up and down his arm. Gentle kisses, barely brushes of lips against his scalp, peppered themselves over his head everywhere Tetsuro could reach without dislodging him.
“I’ll be fine.” Kenma muttered back, tightening his hold for a moment. He would be. In a few minutes he’d be perfectly fine again, ready for another week of stolen moments between the hours of solitude and work.
“Not what I asked.” Tetsuro pulled back slightly, feeling Kenma’s hold lessen in response. He ignored the legs around his waist and straightened, both hands moving to cup Kenma’s face. He brushed a few strands of hair from his eyes and gently smiled at him.
“ Are you okay? Right now.” Kenma melted into the hold, letting his body relax until Tetsuro was holding his face up. He understood why the cats did this now, it was very nice.
“Yeah… I am now.” Kenma said, lips barely moving enough to get the words heard. Instantaneously, Tetsuro’s face blazed red to the tips of his ears. Kenma’s lips twitched in a smile nearly giving him away but he managed to squash it, wanting to tease him a little longer.
“Keeeenma.” He whined, dropping his head down until their foreheads were pressed against each other. “Why do you have to do this to me?”
Kenma let out a soft snort, twisting his wrist so he could gently stroke the hairs on the back of his head. Tetsuro hummed, pressing harder against his forehead to encourage it.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“ I’m ridiculous? You’re the one being… being…”
“Being?”
“Geh. Forget it. All that matters is… that I love you. Even if you’re a big bully-bully.” Tetsuro said, rubbing their noses together. He pushed gently, knocking their heads together like an over affectionate cat and Kenma loved him even more.
He kissed him, gently scratching through his hair. His chest warmed as Tetsuro kissed back, leaning back in the chair until Tetsuro was pinning him down again. Tetsuro’s breath was hot against his lips as he pulled back minutely, teeth tugging at Kenma’s bottom lip before he was kissing the smaller man harder. His tongue slipped into his mouth and Kenma let out a soft groan, pulling his legs in tighter until Tetsuro was flush against him.
Then Tetsuro pulled back, breaking free of his hold easily and kissed his forehead. He grinned, managing to kiss his nose before Kenma came back to himself and swatted him away.
“Sorry kitten, but as much as I would love to spend the day with you, you have a meeting.” Tetsu reminded him, making Kenma groan again this time with frustration. “It’s until seven and we need to leave in the next forty five minutes and you’re still in your pajamas ... actually I think those are actually Mori’s pajamas that started out as mine.”
Kenma glanced down. He was right.
“What’s your point?”
“.... I…. don’t have one, but get up and go put clothes on. I have a job shadowing that starts at three so I need to drop you off a little early to make it on time. I should be off by the time you’re finished.” Tetsuro patted the legs around his waist, chuckling when they slid off with an annoyed groan. “C’mon baby, you love starting discourse at work and you know it.”
Kenma glowered at him, allowing himself to be harassed out of his chair. Just because it was true didn’t mean Tetsuro had to point it out.
He made his way to the bedroom, eyeing the three cats splayed out on the bed who opened an eye at his entrance. He debated joining them, snuggling under the blankets and letting them drown him in fluffy affection especially after someone decided to leave him hanging.
“Don’t you dare lay with those cats.” Tetsuro called and Kenma flipped him off despite knowing Tetsuro couldn’t see him. “And put down that middle finger, there are children in the house.”
“The only child here is you,” Kenma called back, ignoring the fake gasp of offence. The cats settled back down as he stripped and pulled his clothes back on, well aware they wouldn’t get any attention during this routine.
Kenma tugged on his work shirt, finishing the last button when he heard steps behind him. Strong arms wrapped around his waist and tucked him against a muscled frame. He leaned into it, head tilting back against Tetsuro’s shoulder.
“I’m proud of you.” Tetsuro murmured softly, affectionately nuzzling his cheek. “I know it’s not much comfort, but this will only be a little while longer. Mori-kun is almost done with this case and then his hours will be more stable and he’ll have time off. I have a little longer but once my internships are over and I’m a full pediatrician I can settle in the hospital and have a set schedule and we can be together more.”
“... Tetsuro.” Kenma said softly, turning his head to run his nose on the underside of Tetsuro’s chin. “It’s the most comforting thing of all. Knowing we’ll all be happy and together.”
Kenma leaned his head comfortably against his shoulder, smiling softly up at him. It would take time, but he was patient. He waited three years to get both of them within reach, he could wait a while more for things to finish falling into place. He didn’t care how long it took, as long as they got there.
He turned and reached up to cup Tetsuro’s face, his chest warm and feeling soft at the dopey affectionate look on Tetsuro’s face. Tetsu was a nerd, a big giant, adorable nerd and Kenma didn’t want to live a moment without him. Kenma leaned up and brushed his lips against his cheek.
“We have to get to work, stop distracting me.” Kenma drawled, letting go of his boyfriend and escaping the room. Tetsuro spluttered behind him, calling Kenma’s name in a drawn out cry before Kenma heard him cooing at the cats. He rolled his eyes, wondering how he’d managed to get stuck with this doofus for all eternity.
He grabbed his laptop bag while waiting for Tetsuro to leave the cats alone, slipping into the game room to grab his phone and send a quick response to Shoyo. Apparently, he’d run into Oikawa again and Ushiwaka tried to arm wrestle both of them. If the photo was anything to go on, Atsumu had his hands full trying to hold Bokuto back while Shoyo was trying his best to get Kageyama to join in.
“Kenma?” Tetsuro asked, probably wondering if he ran off.
“Sorry, I’m coming…. Tell Bokuto to stop bullying Atsumu, I think his arms are going to fall off and if that happens Shoyo’s going to come bother me about it.”
“Shrimpcake is going to bother you either way. Is it even bothering when you prefer him to me?” Tetsuro hummed as if genuinely thinking it over as he tugged out his own phone and sent a message to Bokuto. Kenma just rolled his eyes at his words and tugged him out of his room, pushing him towards the door.
Kenma paused to dash into the kitchen and grab Tetsuro’s bento from the fridge where he’d put it after returning home. He pushed it into his chest with a half glare.
“You forgot to eat it again.” Kenma accused and Tetsuro’s cheeks flushed light pink.
“I was busy…” Tetsuro mumbled, looking partly ashamed of himself and Kenma sighed. Tetsuro had always been that way, no matter what he said about Kenma, when it came to being too distracted to eat Tetsu was a hundred times worse. If he got it into his head he had to finish a book or essay or quiz, he wouldn’t stop unless someone took away his pen and put chopsticks instead.
“I know, now eat. It’s only a twenty minute ride to my work and a ten minute walk to your hospital, so we have about ten minutes for you to eat. Less than that if you keep staring at me like a weirdo.”
“Kenma.” Tetsu breathed, hand moving over his heart. Kenma smacked it back down and shoved him towards the table. Tetsuro laughed and listened, unwrapping the bento and digging in with a hum.
Kenma leaned against him, waiting for the outcome of the impromptu arm wrestling match when a message came in from Kai. Kai was backstage with… Ushiwaka and Shoyo?
I think you should see this . Was Kai’s message, followed by another photo of a familiar taller man with dark skin and a buzzcut under a thick top of hair who was shaking hands with Bokuto. Atsumu was nowhere to be seen but Kageyama and Shoyo were both attempting to squeeze between Bokuto and the other guy.
I just wanted to see Silver Swan backstage, I wasn’t aware it was going to turn into a reunion. Kai sent another photo, this one a selfie with someone else Kenma recognized from Fukunaga’s posters. Semi Eita, lead vocals and song writer for Silver Swan and ex-volleyball player from Shiratorizawa.
I thought Hinata’s head was going to explode when he saw me and Oohira waiting back here for Semi-san. Apparently Oohira and Ushijima always come to visit Semi after a show, they’re quite sweet. I would say they remind me of you three, but no one’s tried to bite anyone yet (^-^)
Kenma rolled his eyes, removing his weight from Tetsuro as he finished his bento and went to lay the container in the sink.
You may act cute, but I know you’re evil Kai Nobuyuki . Kenma sent back, though he knew it didn’t mean anything. Kai was the sweetest person he knew, which was saying something because Kenma knew both Shoyo and Shibiyama.
If that’s how you want to think of it, I won’t argue. I have to go, I’ll try and keep Hinata out of trouble for you. Don’t tell Fukunaga, but I’m getting Semi to sign a bunch of merch for his birthday. I can say some of its from you if you’d like, I know you’re busy and the others have been working non-stop. Let me know if you have any free time this week or next, we can get lunch! (◠ω◠✿)
“If I didn’t love you and Mori,” Kenma said as Tetsuro looked up from tugging on his shoes, confusion clear, “I would marry Kai right now.”
“.... I mean, who wouldn’t? The guys like, an angel. And I know Shibiyama!” Tetsuro snorted, holding out his hand for Kenma to take as he shoved on his own shoes and let himself be led out the door.
Chapter 3
Kenma didn’t move as the house shook with the front door closing. His fingers slid over the controller, deftly moving his character behind a rock to avoid being seen. He glanced at the time, 3:18 a.m. The only one who would be moving around that early was-
“Kenma?” Mori’s voice whispered, scratchy with exhaustion before his head poked into the room. He glanced at the game on the screen, then Kenma curled up in his chair with one cat on his lap and the other on the top of the chair.
“No, I don’t see it.” Kenma said into his microphone as one of his co-op players called out to him. “Give me a second.”
Kenma flipped the switch on his head phones, turning to look at Mori better without losing sight of the game.
“Lev abandoned me for Kuro.” Kenma said, glancing forlornly at the spot the gray cat had vacated a few hours ago. Mori snorted, rolling his eyes.
“Stop calling him Lev, you’re going to confuse Tetsuro when the real Lev comes to visit.” Mori said, eyes moving from Kenma to the game curiously. “Midnight release? Mind if I sit in with you?”
Kenma shook his head. “Charity stream, making people pay to listen to screams.” He hummed, turning his eyes over to the couch as he flipped his microphone back on.
“Kodzuken? Are you playing with your cats while I’m dying? I’m deducting this from your pay.” Sandixie called into his ear, echoed by ArcadeFox.
“No I am not being distracted by my cats… You don’t even pay me… You don’t pay me either! None of you pay me, go away or I’m leaving you all to die.” Kenma winced as three screams echoed in his head set as his team members found themselves being chased. “That’s why you don’t fuck with me… dammit now I have to bleep that out… I hate editing streams, you all suck.”
Morisuke laughed softly, careful to keep his voice too low to be picked up by the microphones. He made his way towards the couch, scooping up the orange tabby from the back of Kenma’s chair. Carolina Reaper meowed pitifully before Morisuke sat down and lowered him into his lap. Immediately the cat snuggled up, purring loudly at the presence of her favorite human.
Kenma glanced back at him, watching Mori’s eyes droop and sink before flashing open again. After a moment Mori noticed his gaze and stuck out his tongue, fingers buried in Reaper’s fur.
Kenma hummed, turning back to the game and heading away from the stalking Mike. He turned behind a house, pausing his movement to look up at his struggling companion, Zebstrikah. Through the headset he could hear complaints and the other two players laughing.
“Now, next time you want to harass me remember, I can and will leave you to die.” Kenma purred, then tapped the button to help the character down to his feet. “I’ll distract him, he’s about to hit stage three and I’m the only one of you who hasn’t been hooked yet…”
Screams erupted from his headset as Mike appeared behind them, scaring the rescued Zebstrikah. Kenma sighed, shaking his head and running his character towards the killer just as the music hit. Like he thought, the other player took the bait and downed him, quickly hanging him on the nearest hook and letting the other player go free.
“The things I do for you people.” He grumbled, gently flicking Docosahexaenoic off his lap. The white cat hissed as she landed, flicking her black tipped tail and strutting out of the room to join a less moving human. Sighing and keeping his eye on the screen so he could see who was coming to save him, Kenma stood up and moved the chair away from him and made his way to the couch.
He was free a second after making himself comfortable and quickly turned to run in the other direction, hiding away in a dark corner and healing himself before making a beeline towards the last generator they needed to get done. From the sounds of it, Zeb was getting hooked again, but it was his third time. No use saving a dead man. Morisuke shifted until he was leaning against him, easily falling into place as the screen lit up with the finished generator, two orange lights in the distance showing where both exits were.
“I should have played Monster Hunter,” Kenma sighed, listening to the frustrated shout of “Oh come on! A Mori?! Really?!” as one of his companions died, Sandixie if his cursory glance at the bottom left of the screen was any indication, though he was more focused on opening the exit door. “Then I would be able to play in peace .”
“You don’t talk enough as it is Kodzuken, your fans would fall asleep if you played alone.” ArcadeFox chirped into the microphone, loud enough for Mori to hear and nod in agreement despite Kenma’s glower of annoyance.
“I talk enough… Also Mike’s here at my gate, hope you know where the hatch is.” Kenma’s voice was almost sing-song as he crossed the border to freedom.
“SON OF A-” ArcadeFox cut himself off with a yelp as he ran straight into the killer on his way to the exit Kenma had opened, the game quickly ending with Kenma as the only survivor.
“Oops.” Kenma snickered, stretching. “I can’t believe we still have two more hours of this stream.”
“Let’s do it for charity,” Zebstrikah mocked, “It’ll be fun Zeb, so much fun. No one bothered to mention it’s the most terrifying game ever!”
“It is not, you’re just a baby.” Sandixie snorted and Kenma let out a snort.
“He’s not wrong, you are the biggest baby.” Kenma said into the microphone, flipping the switch to turn it off while waiting for the game to find another killer for their group. He turned to Morisuke, nuzzling his temple.
“You sure you don’t want to crawl into bed with Tetsu? He has Doco and Kirby.” Kenma murmured softly, one arm moving to slide small fingers through Mori’s hair. “And he won’t be talking like I will.”
“No, I want to hear you talk. I miss your voice.” Morisuke said softly, eyes already closed at the gentle stroking of his hair. Kenma’s chest bloomed with warmth as his face turned red and he was suddenly grateful he didn’t have a camera on him right then.
“Why don’t you lay on my lap then, c’mon, you can rest while I play.” Kenma scooted further down the couch and carefully directed Morisuke’s head to his lap and waited until his feet were comfortably on the couch before returning to the game. Still another thirty seconds. He flipped on his microphone.
“Hey, do you think people would pay more to watch Zeb’s face when he gets attacked?”
Kenma slid out from under Moriske to turn off the system as the charity stream finally came to an end, humming softly as ArcadeFox chattered in his ear.
“You’re really ending the game already? Usually you’re the one streaming for another few hours, you feelin’ okay?”
“Yeah, my boyfriend got home from an eighteen hour day and I have to make sure he takes care of himself. Otherwise he’ll drag himself into work again and work himself to death.”  Kenma sighed, looking fondly over at the passed out lawyer.
“Uh… Kodzuken… we’re still live.” Zebstrikah coughed into his ear. Kenma’s face warmed as he realized he’d just accidentally outed himself to the entire internet. Well…
“This is my last stream, goodbye forever, all of you.” Kenma groaned, face palming. That was great. Actually, he supposed it didn’t matter, he doubted he would actually lose many viewers and would probably gain some by being out and even if he did, he made enough money from his company to be perfectly fine.
“Don’t worry Kodzuken, we still love you, forever and ever.” Sandixie laughed as Kenma hovered his hand over the exit button.
“It’s still embarrassing… I’ll see you guys later, bye.” Kenma mumbled into the microphone before turning it off completely. He sighed and leaned back, letting his spine crack as he tried to work through what just happened. After a moment he shoved the thoughts away, well aware he couldn’t do anything about it now.
He let his gaze travel over the room, sliding over Morisuke’s frame as the shorter man curled around Reaper and Kirby started to climb his way onto Morisuke’s hip and lay as spread out as he could. Kenma stepped closer until he could kneel beside the couch and gently stroke through Morisuke’s hair, leaning in to press a kiss onto his forehead.
It had taken Kenma a while to admit it, but he couldn’t help but be more physical with Morisuke. With Tetsuro it was different, they knew each other so well  that Kenma could show his love in smiles or actions or even in calling him out on his nerdiness. But Morisuke… Being so close to losing him not too long ago just made Kenma want to hold onto him until Morisuke knew beyond a doubt that Kenma loved him, would continue to love him, wanted him around.
Kenma and Tetsuro were a rhythm written for each other, crafted to complement and support. Morisuke was a later addition to their rhythm and Kenma knew Morisuke felt that bridge was sometimes too big a gap but Kenma could never go back to just him and Tetsuro. Morisuke was the heartbeat to Tetsuro’s spine and Kenma’s brain, an integral part of who they had become.
“Kitten? Morisuke mumbled, breath ghosting along Kenma’s neck. His eyes still weren’t open as he mumbled the nickname again and Kenma kissed his forehead again.
“Keep sleeping, I’ll be right back.” Kenma murmured, watching Morisuke’s shoulders go lax as he fell asleep again.
Kenma straightened and moved back to his feet, slipping into the kitchen and flipping on the rice cooker. If he was up, he might as well make breakfast for once.
He debated on waking Morisuke up, happy to see him sleep peacefully for once instead of tossing and turning and searching for a few minutes of restfulness. Kenma sighed, leaning down to push Morisuke’s shoulders gently. Morisuke hadn’t eaten, Kenma had to make sure he did, after all his boyfriends both went out of their way to make sure he had eaten all the time.
“Mori? I have breakfast ready.” Kenma said, laughing when Mori tried to swat him off but couldn’t move his arm far enough. “I made bacon.”
“...Not fish?” Mori hummed, cracking open an eye. Kenma wrapped his arms around Kirby, letting the cat shift until he was hugging Kenma’s neck in a move Kenma still wasn’t sure how Tetsuro had taught him.
“No fish, if Tetsu wants to cook himself fish he can but I won’t do that.” Even Kenma knew Tetsuro ate way too much fish and it was probably his way of pushing his agenda that fish is better than meat.
“Thanks Kenma.” Morisuke mumbled, hand dropping onto the carpet and eyes sliding shut.
“Should I bring it in here?” Kenma asked after a minute passed, curious if Morisuke was even still awake.
“Am.. I not moving?”
“Not even a little bit.”
“Son of a…” Mori sighed, sucking in a breathe before opening his eyes and sitting up. Reaper jumped off, pouting up at them before flicking her tail and walking out of the room, probably to stare at the food bowl and hope someone gave her a treat.
Kenma held out one of his hands, the other cradling Kirby, and took Morisuke’s and twined their fingers together as he pulled him up. Mori’s face pinkened when he realized Kenma wasn’t letting go but he just gave him a fond smile and allowed himself to be led to the kitchen and sat at the kotatsu.
“You’re being clingy.” Morisuke commented, not an admonishment, if he thought it was bad he would have told Kenma to stop doing it. It was a comment, especially when Kenma pouted at having to release Morisuke’s hand in order to hold the chopsticks. Kenma waited until he was nearly finished eating before answering.
“Well, I just outed myself to the entire internet as gay, and also you’re like a heater and my hands are cold.” Kenma said, finally letting Kirby go free in order to shove both hands under Mori’s shirt. Morisuke jolted in surprise, the bacon slipping from his grip.
“Outed yourself- are you okay?” Mori put the chopsticks down but Kenma just shrugged. He shifted until his feet were sticking out from under him instead of sitting properly on the cushion and could heat up quickly. He snuggled against Mori’s steady side, pulling the blanket a little higher up so they could both be comfortable and give Kenma time to think of a response.
“I’ll be fine. I just forgot the stream was still live and mentioned my boyfriend, you. It was a surprise and I’m… trying not to worry about it. I mean, logically I know that I probably won’t lose viewers and will actually probably get more and that I have more than enough money if I get suspended… But I never really ever meant to come out and I just hope no one figures out I mean you or Tetsu, I don’t want to put your jobs at risk.”
Morisuke’s arm wrapped around him a moment later, his free hand moving to tilt Kenma’s head up. Morisuke’s hands were warm as his brown eyes searched Kenma’s for any sign of upset or panic.
Strangely enough, there wasn’t any. Thinking on it, Kenma knew his highschool self would have cancelled his account and hid under his blanket until Tora or Tetsu came to drag him out. It’d been a long while since then and part of Kenma still wanted to hide himself but a stronger part, the side that had grabbed both Tetsurou and Morisuke and held them together, refused to let himself be shamed for what he was. He wasn’t a child afraid of rejection anymore, he was an adult with his own house, friends who didn’t care about his sexuality, two boyfriends who were amazing in so many different dorky ways, and more than enough money to live his life without any homophobic viewers.
Kenma tilted his head, bumping their noses together as Morisuke’s face softened and he tugged Kenma into his lap. Morisuke nuzzled against his back, pressing a kiss down and trailing a few more over his neck and jaw before finally resting his chin on his shoulder. Kenma shivered slightly as the breath rolled over his ear before wiggling to get more comfortable.
“Kenma, don’t worry about us. Hanamaki-san wouldn’t fire me for being gay, he already knows Sakusa-kun and Issei-kun are and he doesn’t care. As for Tetsuro, I highly doubt he hasn’t already told multiple people because he loves talking about you and he would rather be out then struggling with a homophobic boss. He’ll probably just have to be careful not to let the patients’ parents know and he’ll be fine… Then again… He loves talking about you.” Morisuke hummed, nuzzling Kenma’s cheek obnoxiously as Kenma groaned. He’d definitely been living with Tetsuro too long.
“Don’t remind me. I’m starting to think he might be in love with me.” Kenma sighed, fluttering his eyes purposely at Morisuke as he picked up the chopsticks and snagged a piece of rice to feed him. “What are we going to do if he confesses?”
“Mm… I suppose we could always kick him out.. Maybe give him a chance? He is attractive…” Morisuke hummed, taking the bite and kissing Kenma a moment later. Kenma smiled softly, the corners of his mouth just barely lifting as he kissed back, leaving a teasing nip on his lip as he pulled back.
‘Yeah but all those cat puns… Are they worth it?”
“Oh that is true… and his bedhead is the worst… If we kick him out, then at least Doco will go with him and stop being a bitch-”
“I cannot believe you just said that about my princess.” Tetsuro gasped, said cat curled in his arms with her usual grumpy scowl on her face. He was only half hidden but easily seen in the doorway from the reflection on the TV.
“I can’t believe you just sat there watching us, you pervert.” Kenma said, not even bothering to look back as he picked up another bite and fed it to Morisuke.
“I can’t believe he was more offended about the cat than his bedhead.” Morisuke said, leaning on Kenma again and nuzzling him affectionately.
“No I can, we all know he fails the mirror test.”
“Oh true, failed the one test Lev can actually pass.”
“You two are the worst boyfriends, Bokuto wouldn’t do this to me.” Tetsuro whined, making his way into the dinning room and taking a seat on the other end of the kotatsu.
“Keiji would.” Kenma said, reaching over to grab the bowl of bacon before Tetsurou could.
“Keiji would.” Morisuke agreed, taking a piece as Tetsu groaned.
“You two are the meanest people ever… Are you leaving me already?” He pouted when Mori finished the rest of his bowl. Kenma and Morisuke both stuck out their tongues, grabbing the dishes and making their way to the sink. Kenma returned a moment later as Mori washed them out.
“Mori just got home a few hours ago, and I was doing that charity stream. I’m keeping him at home today.” Kenma said, leaning down to kiss Tetsuro’s pouting face and pat his head teasingly.
“You two need to sleep more, doctor’s orders.” Tetsuro said, poking Kenma’s side and snorting when he got slapped away from the ticklish area. He grabbed Kenma’s hand and pressed a kiss to his palm, leaning backwards to snag Morisuke as he tried to sneak past. He tugged the shorter man closer until Morisuke gave in and kissed him.
“Sure thing, Dr. Bed Head.” Kenma sighed, grabbing Morisuke’s hand and tangling their fingers together.
“Do you know what the word respect means Kenma?” Tetsuro asked good naturedly, watching them head to the bedroom. Breakfast would be quiet this morning, but at least he would know they were getting enough rest. He glanced down as his lap got heavier, Kirby’s mouth already hanging open and ready to yowl, it wouldn’t be quiet after all.
“Nope.” Kenma called, holding out his middle finger before Morisuke pulled him down the hall with a laugh.
“You can be such a brat.” Mori laughed, face bright even with the dark lines under his eyes. Kenma fell back on the messy bed and pulled him over. He smiled up at the amused face and leaned in to kiss him.
“You love it.”
“That’s not the point.” Mori pointed out, smiling softly and kissing him sweetly. Kenma melted before finally pulling away and sliding under the blankets, moving to the middle so Morisuke could move in behind him.
Strong arms wrapped around him, Morisuke’s face tucking itself behind his back as they got comfortable. Kenma tugged the blankets up further, listening to Morisuke’s breathing until it finally smoothed out and he knew his boyfriend was asleep. Then he finally relaxed, drifting off.
Chapter 4
Kenma woke up alone. The blanket behind him was cold, though Kirby was doing his best to warm up Kenma’s head as he licked at his hair.
Kenma shifted, leaning up to glance at the clock against Kirby’s mewled wishes. Six in the afternoon blinked on the alarm clock, he’d slept for nearly twelve hours.
He sat up more, reaching up to scratch the tangles out of his hair. Hopefully Mori had probably managed to get four or five hours of sleep before waking up, he was never able to sleep in. He looked around the room, wondering if Tetsuro was passed out on the floor somewhere when a voice came from the kitchen followed by a laugh. Kenma slipped out of the bed, padding towards the kitchen curiously.
Tetsuro was standing against the fridge, holding a bag of sugar above his head despite Morisuke’s growled orders. The med student just laughed and leaned down, making kissing noises and Mori let out a groan.
“You’re absolutely ridiculous.” Mori snapped but his glare softened as he grabbed Tetsuro’s shirt and pulled him down into a kiss. Immediately both of them melted against each other, laughing softly as they broke apart and Tetsuro bumped their foreheads together. Tetsuro tilted his head, stealing another kiss as Mori managed to get the sugar. Twice more, Morisuke kissed back before he finally turned away towards a bowl filled with peeled apples.
Kenma’s heart warmed at the sight, the gentle look in Mori’s eyes and the glee in Tetsuro’s. They way they leaned into each other without hesitance, moving around each other on instinct. Something that would have been impossible three years ago, but now was becoming an everyday occurrence.
“Hey Mori, try the stir-fry.” Tetsuro hummed, snagging a knife as he switched places with Morisuke to grab the cutting board. He pressed play on the speaker above the fridge and music filtered in, making Tetsuro wiggle as Morisuke laughed at him.
“Needs more flavor, tastes bland.” Morisuke said, gasping when Tetsuro stuck his finger in the apple pie filling.
“Needs more flavor, tastes bland.” Tetsuro mocked back, easily moving out of range of Morisuke’s kick before making his way back to his side to slice the meat. “What’s wrong with my sauce?”
“It’s sweet.”
“Oh so you mean it tastes good.”
“I mean it tastes absolutely terrible, who taught you to cook? Bokuto?” Morisuke laughed, bright and clear at Tetsuro’s mock gasp of insult. They leaned in together naturally, kissing before going back to slicing.
“How was school?” Mori hummed, easily dicing the apples and popping one into his mouth.
“Ugh, I was a practicum all day, which normally I love but it was Nishimoto-sensei today and that guy could put even Kai to sleep. I’m not even sure what we talked about, it’s just a fuzzy gray memory.” Tetsuro groaned, slicing through the beef before tossing it in the simmering pan.
“Oh that’s not worrying at all, I hope you’re not trying to become a doctor.” Morisuke laughed, shaking his head as Tetsuro stuck his tongue out at him again. He held up an apple bite and Tetsuro leaned in, snagging it with his teeth and chomping down on it noisily.
“Why must you bully me, why must you harass and demean and be supercilious and-”
“I love you,” Morisuke hummed without looking up from mixing the filing with the apples. A yelp slipped out from him as Tetsuro wrapped his arms around him and spun him around.
Tetsuro dropped him back on the ground and turned him so he could pick him up again and kiss him in the air. Morisuke’s fake anger rant was cut off and he laughed softly, reaching down to cradle Tetsuro’s cheeks. Both of them ignored the sugar on Morisuke’s hands as the smaller man wrapped his legs around Tetsuro’s waist and leaned down to kiss him, teasingly squishing Tetsuro’s cheeks together.
“I love you too.” Tetsuro said, tongue flicking out and catching a bit of sugar on his lip. “Oh, have you thought of adding salted caramel?”
“Hm? Oh no I haven’t… That does sound really good, I don’t think I’d need to change the recipe much for that… Craving caramel?”
“Oh, am I that obvious?” Tetsuro gasped and grinned when Morisuke kissed him again. “Cravin’ you too, Mori-kun.”
“Don’t be perverse Kuroo,” Morisuke admonished but his eyes softened as he rubbed their noses together. Another gentle peck landed on Tetsuro’s lips, slowly morphing deeper and slower as Tetsuro lowered him back to the ground. Morisuke’s fingers finally moved from Tetsuro’s face, leaving handprints of sugar that Morisuke couldn’t help but laugh at as he flipped on the water and grabbed a towel.
Tetsuro watched him, lips turned up in a soft smile as Morisuke cleaned his hands and turned back to him. The med student bowed down as Morisuke approached, letting Mori gently brush off the mess. Morisuke paused, gently stroking Tetsuro’s cheek.
“I missed you too, Tetsu.” He murmured, smiling at the dramatic gasp that broke from Tetsuro. “You’re a brat. Of course I missed you, I miss you even when you’re only away for a few minutes. I miss waking up with you when Kenma crawled into bed at four in the morning and we’d hug him until he whined and settled down to sleep. I miss going to the zoo with you to take pictures of owls to fuck with Bokuto. I miss coming home and watching tv together or brushing Reaper, or reading. I miss you Tetsuro, I love you.”
“Mori...” Tetsuro said, voice barely above a whisper before he leaned down and pressed a kiss against Morisuke’s temple.
“Mm, we should finish cooking before Kenma wakes up, he’ll be hungry.” Morisuke said softly, smiling up at him before finally slipping free and moving to grab the caramel in the fridge.
Tetsuro stepped behind him, humming along to the music as he leaned down. One hand moved to his waist before brushing along the edge of Morisuke’s hair and dropping a featherlight kiss against his skin. Morisuke shivered before his shoulders relaxed and he tilted his head, inviting more.
Tetsuro gave him what he wanted, kissing his neck again and again, pulling him closer as Morisuke put the caramel on the counter. He sucked lightly, just enough to make Morisuke gasp and groan his name softly.
“You’re a terrible influence, we have to cook.” Morisuke said, but he didn’t step away even when Tetsuro’s teeth scraped over his neck. He moaned softly, turning to wrap his arms around his neck when he caught sight of a blur.
“Tetsu! Cat!” He yelped and Tetusro spun, grabbing Docosahexaenoic as the cat landed on the counter and was already trying to eat the raw beef.
“No! Bad! Raw meat is bad for you, princess. I’m sorry baby.” Tetsuro cooed, dropping the cat back on the floor. Instantly the white cat spun and hissed, tail fluffing out before strutting over to Kenma and curling around his legs.
Kenma was doing his best to hide his laughter but it broke out when he caught sight of Tetsuro’s pouting face. Tetsu just let out a low whine, pointing at Kenma when Morisuke just rolled his eyes at the two of them.
“You’re cute.” Kenma purred, a slow smirk growing on his face when Tetsuro’s cheeks flared red and his tongue stuck out.
“Why does Kenma make you blush, but when I say I love you you just get handsy?” Morisuke snorted, raising an eyebrow at Tetsuro’s whine as he turned to look at his other boyfriend.
“I’m being harassed, it hasn’t even been a few minutes and you two are already double teaming me.” Tetsuro complained and both of his boyfriends rolled their eyes together. Morisuke grabbed the caramel and turned back to the pie filling, lifting the lid from the cooking vegetables.
“Might want to throw that meat in soon, otherwise they’re going to go soggy and be even grosser than your sweet recipe.”
“ You’re grosser than the sweet recipe.” Tetsuro mocked, spinning back to the meat and picking up the knife again. “Kenma, watch the cats.”
“Yes sir, captain, sir.” Kenma said sarcastically, bending down to stroke Doco’s fur as the cat purred loudly. After a few moments she finally relaxed and turned to walk down the hall away from the cooking.
A few steps further and Kenma stepped between them to the sink, flipping on the water and grabbing the brush. He started scrubbing at the dishes already used, grabbing the cutting board as Tetsuro finished and the mixing bowl as Morisuke did.
A hand descended on his hip moments before lips pressed against his cheek and the mixing spoon joined his dishes. A moment later his other side grew warm as Tetsuro leaned against him and nuzzled his forehead, knife being passed over with a kiss.
The kitchen was warm between the three of them, cats scared off with flicks of water from Kenma’s hands. They nestled together as the music rambled in the background, effortlessly switching between jobs and letting Tetsuro drag them into more than one dance. Laughter and sweet kisses filled Kenma’s awareness and he smiled to himself as he pulled the pie out of the oven, listening to Mori and Tetsu tease each other over movies.
Mornings were hectic and so were nights, but Kenma wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Ren knew what his car looked like and probably had his car license number clearly up in his photographic memory, so he had no trouble in finding Benji's car from the parking lot. The clock would tick past about 11 at night when Benji gets back home from his work. Ren knew that too, that's why he was already here in the parking lot at around 10:45, in his sky-blue Porsche 911, listening to Johny Cash on the radio, slowly rocking his fingers to the lovely rhythm on the wheel, while his palm rested on the gear knob. It was all like an '80s film. 'It's almost 11, mate, where are you', He said to himself. He was impatient. The Johny Cash song moved to a one from the Stones. The distorted voice of Mick Jagger gently caressed the car and the good night. It was warm, and it was summer. Which meant, the clouds were gone and the sky was clear again. A night as serene as it can get, with the luminous moon gleaming and the white twinkling stars giving their special harmony on the black, but well-lit sky. Finally, a tall, lean guy came walking from the office building. He looked western and clearly like a follower of the bohemian ways. Dressed like 1994 and 1974 together, with a jacket, that'd instantly make him the hippiest person in the room. And with a pair glasses, with which one could probably see through the afternoon Delhi smog. The Porsche caught his eye, indeed, but he casually walked to his car, a yellow convertible, put his laptop bag in, and drove out of the lot. Everybody loves a game of cat and mouse, he must've thought to himself. He hadn't had turned the car into a sedan, and the warm breeze swept through his long, brown hair. Yes, it was summer. But it felt like it could rain. It was a Friday night and Benji felt like he should put the pedal to the floor and try to make that trouble inside his head go away. The breeze was almost soothing, almost like breaking free, but barely escapism. He sighed deeply and drove on through the freeway. On the rear view mirror, he saw Ren and his Porsche, clearly following him. He sped up, and took a hard right turn to the upcoming exit to the suburbs, that would've shocked anyone passing by. But, there was no one. It was just Benji and Ren and the dull streetlights. Benji raced through the twisted curves. The only thing that stood still to him was the sky full of stars. He drove about a mile, and settled. The dust still hadn't settled. Yet, the summer breeze refused to take them away. Ren walked cross to Benji's, still seated comfortably in the driver's seat, through the choking dust, looking like a hero, and put his elbows on the windowsill. "We need to talk." --- At Benji's, everything was as cypher-punk as it can get. Dark, with cables laying all across the floor, old routers with their hoods off and broken Game Boy boards. Benji poured a drink to a glass and placed it in front of his guest. Then, he settled on his armchair, placed his arms on the sides of the chair, leaving an impression that he would soon have the whole world under his command. Still maintaining eye contact, Ren slowly held the glass to his nose and smelled it. "You prefer gin to tonic?", he said, breaking the silence of the night. "Yes, Ren. Old habits", he replied after taking a seat and pouring a glass for himself. "I know about you picking Johny Cash and vim over anything, now gin over tonic?" Benji shrugged, helped himself with his glass and sat back. Probably after reminiscing about the good breeze he had just drove through, Benji quickly pulled his mind together. "The purpose of your visit?" "Lately, I have some trouble sleeping." Things weren't looking good from the start of the year. First, there was the reformation. The major part of the members of the team demanded equality amongst all the sub groups. It was all for the good, it was the sign on the times. Now there are team meetings before each CTF, more communication and more growth. As the head of the team, he embraced the transition and welcomed to take more power and stress off him and onto the team. It was like the beginning of a new era. But, as responsibilities became more distributed, performance withered away. The numbers weren’t looking good after Volga. Cyber was pushed into the top 100s in that one. It wasn’t so great in the other one either. It was like all something went wrong. It was almost like the decline of Roman empire. "And you know, Benji, there are some nights where I even feel like there's no point in carrying along with it." "You know about weeds, mate?", Benji replied, with a very serious, yet funny look on his face. "Weed?" "Yeah, there are some species, no matter how hard you trim them or poison them, they continue to grow back?" The air over Benji's hung very low, concealing everything the two men spoke. "You have to plough up the top soil and pull out the taproots", he said, giving his undivided attention to the man in front of him. A bit befuddled, Ren took his eyes off to his watch. The watch read 11:45 PM. He looked outside through the window. The suburb lay inebriated with the subtle star shine, with city lights at the far horizon. Ren got up and walked to the door, after seemingly finding answers in that view, but his mind was still disconcerted. "And get some sleep!", advised Benji, as Ren turned the front door handle. --- That night, midsummer, Ren came rushing in to the Cyber lab. The stars were now concealed with dark bellied clouds threatening to shower down at any instant. The sky seemed to be replicating his state of mind. He was running, or it appeared that he was. His hair smelled of sweat and dust, moreover sorrow, in an overwhelming extent. His face was red with his brows sunken and covered with layers of sweat, from running and his thoughts. He wiped his sweat off from his brow, opened the big wooden door and walked in. ‘Finally, the Cyber Lab!’, he must’ve thought. All of his sadness, anger and his urgency seemed to dissolve away in the subtle tranquility of the Cyber Lab. Where the binaries get spaghettified; the warzone. Although, there were other people and his mates in the lab, at the moment, he felt like he was alone. All of the times he walked through the dark corridors of the Cyber Lab alone at night, he had always felt a certain kind of feeling, like in no place else. It’s peaceful and quiet. Like there’s a spirit who watches all of us from above and leads Cyber through hard times, through the right path. More of like a community server that anyone worthy can make use of, but magical; Community-spirit. A spirit that always pushes you forward. The Spirit of Cyber. Taking in his presence and the feeling, he continued walking, to the far end, where the Cyber Lab’s main hall laid brimming with silence and darkness. Him walking through the corridor, this late in the night, under the series of lamps, over and over again must’ve made him feel like a ghostly spirit. Meanwhile, sky had started to break down with sound of thunder which echoing through Cyber, scattered and eventually dissolving away into the mystery that surrounded it. Cool wind was rushing in. Ren stopped near the long table, just by the ESP8266 which collects the attendance data. Beep. Beep. Imperion was there, grid_lock was probably there, zer0k was definitely not there; Usual Cyber. And the lab grew cold, eerie. Somebody from the end of the table, where he usually sits, leaned back, in a familiar gesture, as he was expecting him, but was met with no reply. That was Balthazar. To him, it looked like this was going to be one of those late rainy nights with CTFs; Late nights with nightmares. They'd buy biscuits, chips and rarely, a drink to keep them contained and usually Balthazar gets over the line first. "You know, I'm something of a Raja, myself. You can link me to the old dynasty of the coastal city." And then he'd talk on and on about how would've been powerful if the times hadn't changed, totally drifting off from the purpose of having the drink, which was to help himself in solving the challenge. A part of Balthazar thought and wanted it to happen that night. Ren must've went through the same thought too when he shot a good look at everybody. He could see the feeling on Balthazar's face. He carelly looked upon his mates and then at his hands. That’s when one of his mates saw that he had been holding a can of a sports drink, in his hands all the time. Something you don't normally see. But there he was, Ren holding a drink and the whole lab became spontaneously became madly silent and restrained. He was still looking at the can, now like his whole life depended on it. Mad images rose and fell in his mind. So did anxiety. He increased his grip on the sports drink, trying to contain his anguish, closing his eyes and trying to concentrate, just before he threw the can at the wall next to The Room Of The Beeping Things, where the can exploded like a bomb, with the drink reaching as far as the Operating Systems Security Lab, and the sound reaching much farther. Nobody moved a muscle, and silence echoed through the dim walls again. It was confusion. And the team looked at him in awe. The rumbling sky made way to a wonderful shower. Little droplets rained down, dissolved and slipped away. At that moment, Ren had a wonderful fantasy. What if the river was flowing right through the window? All the fish, sting-rays and the mud would all flow through the window and he would be able to watch it just from his station. And what if there's a river flowing through the Room Of Beeping Things? You could watch the river swell during the monsoon and maybe try your luck in fishing, just from his station. Watching the muddy water flow away, Ren would call "Benji!". He wasn't calling. He was a screaming. While the cool wind continued to rush in, to that midsummer night. The sky seemed to be replicating his state of mind. The silence and the darkness got intertwined and melted away into ether, eliminating all individuality and bestowing the team with absolute focus. With the sound of thunder, every once in a while. Still, the man’s face was distinct in the shadows. Everyone could clearly see the spark in his eyes and the gleam of his glasses. “You call this productivity? You call this… a team?”, he bellowed in a voice very powerful, like one possessed. He had never took his voice so high. It was the beginning of something Cyber hadn’t yet seen, well at least the present Cyber. “This isn't what Cyber is about.” He looked around. His voice was now almost getting buried in the thunderous clatter of the rain. He took his glass off, sat down, took a moment for himself and began. The thing Ren does best. It was about to happen. Few rain drops slowly rolled down the windows and immediately fell away. The sky seemed to be replicating his state of mind. I knew that I was going to hear something I’ve heard people say a million times to me, again but this time, its going to lay a deep impression within me. Perhaps, it’s in the way he was molded. He was never the one for hollow thoughts. The word on the street was he was in the Olympiad or something similar when he was young. What puzzled everyone the most is the infinite karma in settling in this place helping people, after thousands of adventures, while patiently waiting for the moment of great reckoning to arrive. It was like in those American movies, where the head coach walks into the locker room, delivers a speech that lifts the hearts of everyone in the room in order to go that extra mile and achieve the impossible. Climbing higher and back down, blending into everything Ren said that night. And that’s what had happened. It truly was. Maybe it was a prophecy, or The Spirit Of Cyber, who knows. Now, I remember his glasses and his grin, right before he ended. I remember his voice, now a distant murmur, waiting to come back into my mind on the cold rainy monsoon nights, when I need it the most. And in those nights, the words will come back and envelop me again. “You are as useful as I am. You are just not aware of how useful your contribution to the society that sacrifices you, is.” It’s a reminder. To walk on with your tensed jaw and clenched fist till the very end. To fight in the beaches and the landing grounds. To go till the end. Until you feel your nostrils dilate with the smell of sweat and blood. And feel liberated.

throwback to that wereformer-drift prompt where he becomes a cybercat, plus dratchrod:
kitty-drift lies on ratchet and purrs to alleviate his aches.
when rodimus gets sparked, kitty-drift cuddles his baby bump and purrs to show his love and help roddy relax.
after their bitlet is born, kitty-drift curls around it and purrs to soothe it to sleep.
later, when meeting new people, their sparkling is like "yeah, one of my sires turns into a cat sometimes. isn't that awesome?"
Yes little sparkling kitten, it is awesome.
Roddy doesn’t even need a blanket anymore during his carrying he has Drift who sticks to him like glue.
Ratchet doesn’t know whats worse, loud purring right in his audial or Rodimus’s snoring from carrying.
He’s just a grump so he won’t admit he likes hearing both and misses it.
Though he wishes he didn’t suffer Drifts claws when the mech was kneading 😂
Their Little cyber kitten sparkling inherits Drifts ability and their favorite spot becomes Ratchets neck and Rodimus’s chassis.
Rodimus thinks its adorable seeing their cyber cat family sleep on Ratchet in a cuddle pile, Ratchet not so much.
( he’s being a grump he needs this to fall asleep now and he loves it )

Prologue & Epilogue
OOC: Dropping mun’s first fanfiction in a decade featuring Judai and Johan before and after the events of Bonds Beyond Time.
Pairing: Spiritshipping
Edit: Typos are fixed and now there are links in the text if you want know about more about Johan’s nightmares dreams and the mysterious mask, go follow @itsashowtime to learn more!
___________
The former Osiris Red student had been traveling the globe alone for almost a year now and had fallen out of touch with most of his schoolmates. He texted occasionally with O'Brien and Jim, mainly because they both felt the need to look after Judai as if he was their youngest brother. Asuka checked in once and a while, providing updates on her and Manjyome's lives. Kenzan texted when he could to update Judai on how quiet life had gotten at the Academy. Edo had badgered Judai into downloading Snapchat and they kept up with each other's adventures through brief pictures. The last Judai heard from Edo was a couple videos of Ryou moving in with him a few weeks prior. They'd made Judai laugh especially when he heard Sho complaining in the background. Despite Judai leaving without really saying goodbye, Johan had never drifted away. It was like Judai and Johan hadn't separated. Johan ensured they texted and called each other regularly while he was at university. Judai loved hearing about Johan's path to getting a degree in the history of dueling with a focus on ancient Rome. Apparently, his university had a acquired a few artifacts from an old nameless kingdom. They consisted of some golden braces and a gold-platinum sword which eerily matched this old mask Johan's family had kept for generations.
Johan didn't mind staying up till odd hours just to talk depending on what time zone Judai was in. Judai didn't care about keeping odd hours either, especially if Johan needed to talk after a nightmare or a bad day. He'd found himself keeping a clock of Oslo's time zone on his home screen and sending postcards to Johan when he remembered to.
Regardless of the miles between them, the connection he had with Johan only grew. Judai admitted to himself he missed his best friend more than anyone else. He'd said multiple times that he wished Johan could travel with him.
Judai shouldn't have been surprised with what happened in Venice. He traveled there following a lead about someone who'd stolen Ryou's Cyber End Dragon.
He'd just finished asking a batch of local workers if they had seen or heard of a mysterious masked stranger stealing Duel Monster cards. Then Johan called and after a few minutes of talking, Johan asked Judai to describe his surroundings. "Well if you'd just video call me, I could just show you." Judai pouted. "Judai, I told you my camera isn't working after I dropped it. Come on, I wanna hear about it." Johan dragged out the syllables in his name teasingly. Judai sighed, signalling that he agreed to humour his best friend. The giggle he heard from Johan made him smile involuntarily. "Well, I just walked out of a big library and behind me are two very tall columns with different statues on them... They both have wings?" Judai trailed off as his description of his surroundings turned into a question. Johan laughed, "You're the one who's there! And that big library is called the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana."   Judai smiled, he liked the sound of Johan's Italian. He noticed windy feedback on Johan's end. "Are you on your run or something?" Judai inquired, reminding himself how more than a few times they'd caught up while Johan was working out. "Yep, I called you right before I walked out of my place," Johan confirmed before adding, "now go on." Judai rolled his eyes, "There are plenty of tourists around and jeez these people like their fancy archways. I'll have to send you a picture." "Ha, please do. I love that there's all these religious details and then they just have four horses randomly on the centre arch." "I know, right?" Judai glanced up at them before asking, "Have you been here before?" "Not until today." Judai's brain didn't process that the source of Johan's voice had changed for a second. He'd opened his mouth to question his best friend and then his heart felt like it was going to burst out of his chest, his brain screaming at him to turn around.
So he did.
And his heart soared.
"Johan."
"Judai."
Closing the small distance between them, the two boys embraced each other. They both laughed joyfully, lost in their own little bubble. Judai even picked Johan up and twirled him around. They didn't realise the few kind looks they received from tourists and locals alike. Another couple was walking toward the water and looked knowingly at each other.
"What are you even- don't you have university or work?" Judai wondered, this was the last thing he'd expected to happen today. He was so thankful to see Johan in person instead of on a tiny screen! He was considerably taller than him now too! He held on to Johan's arms, not wanting to break their connection as if the bluenette would disappear. "I did this crazy thing called finishing a school year?" Johan teased before adding, "I was planning to come find you no matter where you were since I'd have the time. It's been too long and I... I really needed to see you." Judai smiled softly, he was so touched. He'd desperately missed having Johan by his side. As much as he appreciated Hane Kuriboh, his professor, Pharaoh, and the other duel spirits, Judai wanted to be with people that didn't exist on another plain of existence. Moreover, he missed getting lost in those emerald eyes. "I needed to see you too, Johan." Neither spoke for a beat, something unspoken shared between their souls. They were happy to just be in the moment with each other.
Johan would've been the first to break the silence had not Ruby Carbuncle and Hane Kuriboh appeared angrily looking in the direction of a plaza. Swooping over their heads with a piercing metal screech, was a darkened version of Cyber End Dragon. Its tail running through the central part of the library Judai was just in. Everyone in the streets began screaming and sprinting in directions away from the dragon. Within seconds Judai and Johan had dropped their respective bags. They loaded and activated their duel disks in sync before calling out their ace monsters. "Let's go Elemental Hero Neos!" "Come on out, Rainbow Dragon!" The two monsters shimmered into existence, Judai tapped into the powers given to him by the Supreme King to materialise the monsters into real beings.
Whoever was doing this had some serious power behind them.
Rainbow Dragon allowed Neos to fly near his head as the two sped towards Cyber End Dragon, their powers charging. However, before either could act, an unfamiliar pearly dragon appeared and rammed Rainbow Dragon into the ground in a flurry of stardust. The force sent Johan and Judai to the ground as Crystal Beasts and Elemental Heroes appeared around them.
"RAINBOW DRAGON!" Johan cried out. He pushed himself forcibly to his feet so he could run to his largest family member. Before he could sprint, Rainbow Dragon disappeared in a flash of light along with his respective card. The remaining dragons flew upwards and began circling the city. Neos barely had time to move out of danger's way and touched back down in the crater Rainbow Dragon was in.
"No... No. No! NO!" A chorus of denial sang from the Crystal Beasts and their Protector who fell to his knees.
Amethyst Cat roared alongside with Topaz Tiger before lying around Johan. Ruby Carbuncle cried as she climbed into Johan’s arm and he cradled her. Emerald Tortoise settled himself next to Topaz before shrinking into his shell in an effort to hide his tears. Cobalt Eagle landed atop Emerald with a strained call. Sapphire Pegasus and Amber Mammoth flanked their family closely, both crestfallen.
Judai watched the group mourn for a moment before moving to throw an arm around Johan. His best friend leaned into the touch and let his tears fall, his shoulders jerking. Judai had felt Rainbow Dragon disappear and couldn't sense him with any of his powers. He looked to his heroes and they shared looks of awe and disbelief. He could barely process what had just happened or how in the world something could defeat Rainbow Dragon that quickly. Where did the card go? Who was doing this and why?
A few minutes passed like this and Judai got the feeling there was more to Johan and his family's reaction. Something had been wrong as of late... Judai wondered if it related to the bad dreams Johan had that he hadn't even wanted to describe. Suddenly, Johan stood and turned, startling Judai and the duel spirits around them. "Sapphire. Cobalt. We're going up to get some answers. I’m not letting this happen again." His tone was firm as he made to mount Sapphire, Ruby hopping out of his arms and onto Sapphire's back. To Johan's shock Sapphire denied him, "You can't be reckless, we don't know what we're facing." "He's right," Amethyst chimed in, her voice painted with sadness, "we have to think about this." "We're not all being separated again." Amber added. Judai felt unknown guilt flood him at the idea of the Crystal Beasts being separated. Johan began to protest when Topaz growled back toward the sky. Everyone turned to witness a darkened Rainbow Dragon emerge from gathered clouds. A maniacal laugh echoed above. Emerald emerged, murmuring, "Judai Yuki..." His words carried more than a name. Emerald's tone and eyes asked Judai for an answer. For a hero.
Judai nodded and flashed a reassuring smile. “I'll bring Rainbow Dragon back! This guy won't know what hit him!”
Johan spun towards Judai, his face a conglomerate of incredulous, concerned anger.
“You're not going in there alone!”
Judai scoffed, rolling his eyes and taking a few backwards steps towards the chaos, “I won't be! I've got duel spirits too you know.”
“Judai! Whoever that is you can't duel them by yourself!”
“Watch me, Duel Academy prepared me for crises. Plus, if they're after rare spirits, you have to protect them and keep them away from the fight.” Judai motioned to the worried Crystal Beasts.
“Judai, I swear to- Fine! I'll use my Gem Knights then, that way their cards don't-”
"I CAN'T lose you again!" Judai implored and almost screamed, his eyes flashing gold.
Johan looked taken aback, his eyes, red and glassy from crying, widened. Judai followed his impulse to close the distance between Johan and him. He took Johan's face in his hands and pressed their foreheads together.
"Johan... You have to be safe, I can't duel, let alone think clearly at the thought of losing you, seeing you hurt like this..." Judai's eyes stared into Johan's emerald ones, willing him to understand.
Off in the distance, sounds of buildings crashing, dragon roars, and people screaming were heard. The two didn't have time to speak what their hearts yearned for.
Johan wrapped his arms around Judai's waist and squeezed him tight. They both shut their eyes for a beat.
“Go save Rainbow Dragon… and the world too while you're at it.” Johan relented, eliciting a chuckle from Judai.
“As you wish.” Judai joked, his eyes opening to see Johan's beautiful green eyes and a ghost of a smile. He was thankful to see those eyes.
“I'll wait for you here.” Johan loosened his grip so Judai could step away.
Judai smiled and made his “Gotcha” sign before sprinting towards the Piazza San Marco.
----
With a grin, Judai waved to Yusei as the latter started up his D-wheel and sped through a portal back to his time. Feeling the breeze pick up, Judai turned and observed his surroundings. He was back in Venice and the sun was setting, washing the buildings with shades of gold. His heart had settled after the intense duel with Paradox and once in a lifetime chance to tag duel with the King of Games. His smile wouldn't leave his face as he thought of all the incredible combos they pulled off to save their respective timelines. As Judai relived the duel, his thoughts were stolen by how Paradox had corrupted Rainbow Dragon also known as the reason Judai battled the villain in the first place. He pulled out his deck and flipped the top card. "It's good to see you, friend." Judai murmured to the card. He felt the dragon's gratitude channeled towards him before he heard what sounded like an ancient voice question him. "My protector, I am sure, is worried about both of us." The dragon ventured, echoing in his mind. At those words, Judai's heart started beating erratically and he clutched the cards in his hand tighter. Johan... With a quick movement, the cards were back in the deck box he kept clipped to his belt and Judai took off towards the place he'd last saw his best friend.
Gratefully, he admired how it seemed the destruction Paradox caused earlier disappeared because now he could appreciate the view. There weren’t many people lingering around. Judai wondered if anyone remembered how close they came to danger or if Time’s magic had interfered.
Either way, he could make out the silhouette of his best friend looking out over the water. Only Ruby sat on his shoulders now. Judai felt in his soul that he’d made this walk to Johan many times in this life and the one previous. He didn’t know very much about his past as the Supreme King besides the dreams he sometimes had. Once in a while, something might trigger a memory, but those moments were few and far between in this past year.
This was one of those moments. It was brief, but as the sunset shifted from golds to reds, Judai swore he saw Johan in glittering armour complete with a cape billowing in the wind.
As quick as it came, the illusion faded away as Ruby turned his way, alerting Johan of Judai’s return.
“What is it, Ruby?” Johan murmured, inclining his head towards her.
She chirped happily before disappearing to the plane duel spirits existed on. Judai assumed that’s where the other Crystal Beasts were along with his own duel spirits. He could hardly feel any of their presences, he wasn’t even sure Pharaoh was nearby?
They were purposefully leaving Judai alone with Johan.
Judai was good with that.
Johan turned to him, his eyes full of concern, doubt, hope, and something else Judai couldn’t decipher.
“Judai…”
Judai stopped an arm’s distance from Johan, trying his best to keep a straight face. Ultimately, he failed the second he reached back for his deck and pulled out Rainbow Dragon’s card. He smiled reassuringly and held it out for Johan.
“You did it!” Johan carefully took the card and held it to his heart. “I knew you would, but I was- we were all so worried, but when the buildings went back to normal I- How did you do it? What happened? I...I don’t know how to thank you.” Johan rushed through his words, his bright smile making Judai smile even bigger.
“It was no problem, I’d do anything for you!” Judai admitted happily as he watched Johan return the precious card to his deck. A dim rainbow halo emit briefly from the deck and the duelists knew things were back to normal.
They looked back at each other and laughed, pulling one another in for a victory hug. Johan’s arms wrapped around Judai’s neck while Judai’s went round Johan’s waist.
“You’re my best friend.” Johan said softly after a minute, making no move to end the embrace.
Judai responded by holding Johan a little tighter. His heartbeat pounded as something in his mind clicked into place. Judai couldn’t help but smile as he realised what he was about to do. This was something his heart and soul had known longer than his brain. Now, Judai wouldn’t let himself leave this spot without putting it into words.
“You’re mine…” Judai said finally, matching Johan’s tone. “Hey, I have an idea on how you could thank me.” He added playfully.
Johan pulled back and suspicion was etched on his face along with an unknowing smile. “What did you have in mind?”
Johan withdrew his arms from their hug only to have Judai take both of his hands into his. Judai loved seeing the blush which crept on Johan’s cheeks. Judai could feel his own cheeks burn at the what he was about to do.
“Just listen for a second, okay?” Judai asked.
Johan gave him a small nod. His emerald eyes were wide and his pupils dilated as he searched Judai’s face for a hint.
Taking a deep breath, Judai started, “I got to tag duel with Yugi Mutou and my new friend from the future Yusei against the jerk who stole Rainbow Dragon. It was incredible that we got to work together and meet up despite being from different times. Afterward we talked about how, somehow, we’d meet again because the friendship we made defies time.”
Johan reacted to everything Judai said and clearly had tons of questions from the way his jaw dropped. At the mention of defying time, Johan’s expression grew more serious, as if he was remembering something.
“And it’s just… such a cool thought that people can do that. No matter the adversity or what the world throws at us, people find their way back to each other.” Judai interlaced their fingers together at that and held his gaze on them.
“Johan, you’re… I’m sorry for yelling at you earlier, I realised in that moment… No I think I’ve known for a while that I… I’ve learned so much this past year being on my own. Most of all I learned how important you are to me. I care about everyone else from school too and our duel spirits. But you and I go through so much together and you’ve always been here for me even with continents and evil between us.”
Judai paused and looked back into Johan’s eyes, “I wish I had the words sooner and no matter what you say, I just hope you can let me stay in your life. I want to protect you and be by your side for as long as you’ll let me because... I’m in love with you. I have been a long time, so long that-”
“You don’t remember when you started?” Johan finished for Judai. The look on his face was one Judai will never forget because he knew that the love he felt for Johan was reflecting back at him. Their faces were a couple inches away.
Judai grinned, “Exactly...”
With that, they both leaned in and kissed each other tenderly. Johan disentangled one of his hands to cradle Judai’s face while Judai’s free hand found its way around Johan’s waist. They both smiled into their series of kisses, breathless and happy.
“I love you, Judai.”
“I love you too, Johan.”

The Marked Ones - Chapter 2
Title: Marked Ones
Category: Digimon/Death Mark/Shiin
Rating: M
Pairing: Ami/Arata
Summary: Ami finds out the secret that Arata has kept from them on the same day that she gathers her courage to let him know how strong her feelings for him are. Arata tries to clean up the mess, but when Ami vanishes without a trace, he sets off to find her. The big question is when did he get this mark to appear on his arm?
Disclaimer: I do not own any rights to Digimon or to Shiin/Death Mark.
Author’s Note: Death Mark is such a good visual novel horror game. I am obsessed with it so why not take one of my very top OTP and combine it with this game. Also, I know the games are in two different time frames but there will be an explanation in later chapters over why that reason is.

~~Story Begins~~
Chapter 2 - It’s Not Over
Yashiki sighed into his coffee cup, the steam moved with the air from the disappointed sigh. He moved his other hand to take off his frameless rectangular glasses which left the world blurry to his brown eyes. He sat the glasses down on top of a book that laid opened on the table.
“Another dead end,” Yashiki said to the empty room. “Why do I have a feeling that I’m overlooking something? Something that is important?”
Knock, Knock
Knocks on the front door broke the silence that reigns in the house. Yashiki stood up and placed his glasses back on his face. He ran his fingers through his black wavy hair as he made his way to the door.
When he entered the entranceway that served as a grand hallway, the tick-tock of the antique clock was dimmed by the constant knocking. He placed a hand on the brown wooden railing and made his way down the stairs. He passed by two red sofas and he took a glance at one of them. The sense of loneliness and an ache in his heart grew.
However, he never did feel a sense of urgency or desperation.
“Mister,” a young girl’s voice said from outside the front door. “Are you home?”
Suzu, Yashiki thought and a smile grew on his lips.
He opened the front door and saw a young female with long black hair and mature brown eyes. She wore a white hoodie jacket over her middle-school outfit. She wasn’t alone nor was her companion the one who he thought it would be.
“Who's your friend?” Yashiki said. Something about the female was making Yashiki body tremble like she was about to start a new chapter on his life. One that he thought was over.
“Mister, that’s not very nice,” Suzu said. “May we come in?”
“Oh, yes. Sorry about that,” Yashiki said. Suzu walked in but the female stayed outside. “Are you going to stand here all day?”
“No,” the female said with a shake of her head. She bowed to Yashiki. “I’m sorry if my presence disturbs you. Suzu said you would be able to help me but, I don’t want to interrupt your plans.”
“If Suzu brought you here then I’ll consider you a friend,”  Yashiki said. “So, please come in.”
“Thank you,” the female said again with a bow.
~~DigiMark~~
Arata knew something was off. He just knew it and Kyoko seemed to be convinced that everything was okay. So didn’t the others, but he could understand the reason why they are denying what is in front of them.
All of them were still healing from their loss of Digimon except for Yuugo who shared Arata’s belief that something was wrong. Nokia is hiding from the truth because she doesn’t want to believe that Ami is gone again. Nokia was closest to Ami and she had such a strong bond with Omnimon, Arata was sure that if Nokia saw their fears in reality with her own eyes, she wouldn’t be Nokia anymore. Just a Nokia shell.
Yuugo confessed to Arata about Yuuko’s fears. Yuuko did regain her brother and her father at the cost of Gaimon. Ami still had a somewhat cyber-like body, but she did return to her physical body, but with Ami missing now. Yuuko feels like she is being punished since everything mostly worked in her favor.
Yuuko has been helping Yuugo with his physical activity otherwise she would help Arata investigate because they made a promise to come back together. Yuuko also still feels indebted to Ami and she hates feeling indebted even to a friend. The catch is if Ami was involved in something sketchy, her bodyguards wouldn’t let her get closer to the truth.
Yuugo, being Yuuko’s older brother,  was in the same predicament as Yuuko. He was also weaker since he was in a coma for eight years. This left everything to fall onto Arata’s shoulders.
Why was Kyoko so convinced that Ami is fine and this was normal for her? This was not like Ami and Arata knew it.  Kyoko should know it too but she seems to ignore the gut-wrenching feeling that something is wrong.
“Listen,” Kyoko said after Arata’s outburst. “Her father asked me if I knew where she was at. Apparently, they were supposed to meet for lunch the other day. I told him that I haven’t seen her for a couple of days. She’s been a runaway before and he assured me that she just ran away again. Even if she didn’t, the police wouldn’t be much help. She’s 18 and if she’s been a runaway before, they won’t look too deep into it. They are still more focused on the underground criminal ring they found a month ago so only a small fraction of the force is being focused on missing cases.”
“Her father?” Arata said.
“Yes. He seemed to be very close with Ami and told me that there was nothing to be concerned about,”  Kyoko said.
Arata nodded. “I see. I’m sorry for taking your time,” he said calmly.  He was seething on the inside and he walks out of Kuremi Detective Agency to calm down. He needed a clear mind to think and just being in the same room with Kyoko seemed to put him on edge.
Arata knew that Ami wasn’t close to her parents. Her father wasn’t in her life and her mother couldn’t stay in Japan for some reason. Her mother abandoned her in Japan.
“Whoever that man pretending to be Ami’s father is behind her sudden disappearance,” Arata said. He leaned his head back against Kyoko’s office door. “If only I knew where to search for clues.”
“This sucks!” a female voice said which caused Arata ’s eyes to focus on the group that was in front of Mirel’s old office. “Is it really too much to ask to see the grim reaper before my time?”
“Calm down, Mei,” another female said that didn’t seem to fit into the group with her cat maid outfit. “Maybe Hanayome was with another person?”
“But...but...I  need to know where an actual haunting is at,” the first girl said.
“There’s still one more telephone booth for us to try,” the only guy said. “We’ve tried the telephone booth in H City by the woods and by the park. We just need to try the telephone booth in H City by the apartments.”
“Excuse me,” Arata said getting their attention. “Who is this Hanayome person?”
~~DigiMark~~
“Have a good night, Suzu,” the newcomer said as Suzu left.
Yashiki closed the door and looked at the female. Her red hair that covered her shoulders wasn’t something Yashiki saw every day and her blue eyes were bright and full of life, but hidden in their depths was fear. Something that Yashiki was used to seeing in his companions.
The brightness of her blue eyes was welcomed after all the horrors he’s faced. Her yellow shirt was a splash of color among the mansion and the grey shoulders did little to protect the young girl from the cold air that drifted inside the mansion. Her grey skirt left some part of her legs bare and almost knee-high yellow socks with grass stains protected her feet from the cold hardwood floor.
“Suzu was determined for you to stay,”  Yashiki said.
“I’m sorry if that ruins your plans,” she said. “Oh. My name is Aiba Ami.”
“Will it be okay for me to call you Ami?”
“Yes. I’d prefer it that way,” Ami said with a smile before it vanished. “Suzu said that you’ll be able to help remove the mark before time is up.”
Dread erupted inside of Yashiki’s throat. It couldn’t be. He swallowed and his suddenly dry mouth didn’t wash the dread down. Something deep inside of him knew that this spiritual war wasn’t over. Mary’s powers were growing and he hasn’t been able to her to rest like he has with the other Mark Givers.
“Can I see it?” he asked.
She nodded.
“You’ll also need to explain all that you remember around the time you got your mark,” Yashiki said.
“I understand,” Ami said. “I do need to take my shirt off to show it to you.”
“That’s fine, just make sure to cover up,” Yashiki said. He closed his eyes and turned around to give her some privacy. He did not need to give one of his common visitors any reason to arrest him for something indecent.
How was she able to get the mark? Mary is sealed off for a few decades. I checked the seal this morning as usual. Is there another power out there? A power connected to Mary’s, perhaps? I could just - no. Suzu brought her here. I can’t let her down.
“Mr. Yashiki,” Ami said from behind him. “You can turn around. I’m wearing another shirt underneath.”
He turned around and his eyes focused on the familiar mark. It was on her chest where the heart is at. It was a dull red which he hoped was a good sign that the spirit wasn’t hinted at her location. Her yellow tank top met the bottom of the curved spiritual bite mark.
“Do you remember anything prior to your discovery of that?” Yashiki said as he looked at her.
“I do, but I wish I didn’t,” Ami said with a fake laugh. She put her yellow shirt back on.
Yashiki watched as she went over and sat on one of the steps. He followed her example and sat next to her.
“There is this man that I love,” she said. “I was in a coma for a few months because the world isn’t what it seems. Somehow, I was still able to communicate with my friends and that’s when I realized I had feelings for him. I was able to wake up from the coma and a week later I was released from the hospital. That exact same day I started to flirt with him.”
Yashiki blinked.
Does this girl have spiritual power? What does she mean by the world isn’t want it seems? Has she had some experience with the supernatural and spiritual world before?
“I never knew someone could be so dense,” Ami said with a small, dry chuckle. “Maybe he wasn’t and that’s why he told me that way.”
“What way?”
“Well, after months of ignored flirting, one of my friends told me that I have to be blunt with him over my feelings so I asked him to meet up with me. Nothing unusual as I have hung out with him before. Just the two of us.” She pushed her tears back as she finally faced reality. “We meet up and before I could muster the strength to tell him, his fiancé  introduces herself to me.”
Ami wrapped her arms around her legs and rested her chin on her knees. Yashiki watched as her body trembled a little. It wasn’t because of the cold air that lingered in the mansion or was it from the fear of possible death that was in her future. It was from her heartbreak and it was sinking in that she was already too late.
“I could have brushed it off,” she said. “I could have congratulated them and apologized for ruining their outing. I could have been such a better friend to him in multiple ways.”
“How did you react?”
“I  looked him in the eye, even with my vision being blurry from holding back my tears, and asked him on how he could be this cruel. Before he could respond, I turned around and ran away,” she said and rubbed her eyes. “That was in Tokyo.”
“Tokyo?  How did you end up here?”
“I don’t know. I know that they still aren’t available all over, but my hair is always in a small side pony by my digivice just to keep my hair out of my eyes. It ’s not anymore. I also have a grey backpack on my back and I don’t know where that is either. I woke up from this trance or whatever you would call it. I had my hands on a rotten wood bar while standing on the edge of a well about to jump in.”
“How did you end up waking up?”
“There was a voice inside my head,” Ami said. “It sounded like one of my friends beckoning me into the well. They were saying encouraging things. Things I always dreamt of being told, but the voice didn’t match with the personality. My friend is a chicken. She’s one of those that after a night of ghost stories she’ll believe her own shadow is alive. The voice in my head told me that they’ll protect me.”
Ami let out a laugh.
“You find this funny,”  Yashiki said.
“Nokia...her voice was the one inside of my head. She’ll try to act tough,” Ami said with a kind smile. “She’ll even try to talk tough, but when it comes to being tough, she’ll have someone else fight the battle or fight alongside. It was never by herself. I’m usually the one protecting her.”
Ami looked forward and rested her head on her knees. “If you are curious, I’m not afraid of dying,”  she said. “I’m afraid of not seeing him one more time to apologize for my actions and to wish him congratulations.”
~~DigiMark~~
Arata glared at the telephone booth like it was the reason for Ami’s disappearance.
“I can’t believe this,”  Arata said as he walked towards the telephone booth. “I have this feeling that I need to find her because she’s in danger. However, I didn’t think I would resort to the occult.”
He stepped into the telephone booth and shut the door. He took in the small phone booth with the green phone and an old faded poster from the police about a case that happened five years ago.
“So, I’m supposed to stay in here and the phone should ring,” Arata said. “I know digivices are still new so cell phones are still in, but does anybody even use these anymore?”
The phone started to ring. Arata looked around and saw no one was around that could prank call him. One of the reasons why he chose the telephone booth by the forest in H City.
He picked up the phone and held it up to his ear. “Hello?”
Lips smacking greeted his ear. It was disgusting and reminded Arata of a rabid dog gnawing on a bone that still had a decent amount of meat on it.
“Did...you...see...it?” a female said in between the smacking with painful breaths.
“No,” Arata said.
“What...would...you...like…to...see...again?” the voice said.
“A friend.”
Arata waited as the smacking lips continued. He shivered as the stagnant air got colder.
“Ami...Aiba? Friend?” the voice said.
“Yes.”
Arata turned around as he heard someone tapping at the door. His eyes grew wide and pressed himself against the phone as two pale hands with blood on the palms slammed against the door’s window. A veil of yellow covered the attacker’s face,  but there was something wrong with its neck.  A yellowed wedding dress was too far down on her body to match with a yellowed fabric of the veil that grazed against the shoulders.
“Seek out the office of a private investigator,”  the voice on the phone said. Arata didn’t know when the smacking sound stopped. “Find Mashita. He’ll guide you to your friend and to someone who’ll help get rid of your Mark.”
The person on the phone hung up and the surprise guest vanished into thin air.
Arata put the phone down and let out a shaky breath. “It’ll take a lot more than that to believe in the spiritual world.” He rolled his sleeve up and on the underside of his wrist, a dull red mark was seen that looked like an animal bite. “How did she even know about this?”

05:25
It was five twenty five when I woke up, the half light of an attempted dawn building slowly behind the blinds. My watch informed me that I had suffered nearly four hours of light sleep and no deeper, it certainly felt that way. The historical, drunker, version of me that had existed last night had preprepared my nutritionally complete slurry, and for that I thanked him. Chilled and blended with a handful of frozen strawberries, it was a palatable if gritty form of breakfast as I surrendered to the waking world and drifted to my workstation.
The watch on my wrist wirelessly identified me to the larger computer, and a series of light grey rectangles appeared on screen, each a notification of a network failure overnight, a cascading failure of virtual nodes spawned by a broken process while I was out drinking, but while the Corporation relied on me for operation during the hours of daylight, the denizens who maintained the network in darkness tended to leave me things like this.
Glancing at my blinds and the wan brightness behind them, I wondered what this time in the morning counted as, but threw together a script to clear out and reboot each machine in turn, then set it running as I ran the shower and set up for the morning.
My pocket computer echoing the alerts of its larger cousin, I threw it into a health app which told me I was behind on my exercise goals for the week, and on track for calorie intake - good old nutrient slurry. Taking a sterile lancet from its plastic sheath, I pricked my finger and gave a drop of blood to the computer - blood sugar was up, as I expected after a night out. I downed a multicoloured set of pills - two for my brain, two for my blood, and one for the air's inherent assault - and washed them down with the last of my breakfast nutrients.
Washing it out and filling the container with water, I sat back down for work, told my organiser that I'd already taken my meds, and started sorting through my messages.
A cyber-attack on one of my Corporate nodes had been detected, the heuristic analyser identified it as using an attack vector we weren't vulnerable to, but felt the need to demonstrate its hunting prowess to me anyway, like a cat leaving a mostly-dead mouse on the bed.  A node was being retired, so I fired up a new one and shifted traffic to that instead. A year's notification of a change in policy for cyber-address identification, yeah fine.
Then I saw a news story about using the hollowed shells of failed middle-America Walmarts as refugee internment camps, and I thought "What kind of futuristic dystopia have I fallen into today?"

The Shape of Things To Come Chapter 9/38
Rating: Mature
Read at Ao3
Start at the Beginning
Supergirl doesn't cause an environmental disaster, Kara and Alex talk, and Cat gets demanding.
Thanks to @ifourmindbeso for her great work as a beta. Any remaining mistakes are entirely my own.
Chapter 9 - Fighting Fires
Kara turned in mid-air as the missiles closed on her, flying backwards as she hit one of them with a blast of heat vision, causing it to explode.  She turned slightly, focusing on the remaining missile, and blew out a huge blast of freeze breath, encasing the missile in ice.  The freezing temperature caused the fuel pump to seize, which made the missile lose thrust, and pitch downwards.  She watched it fall, her breath having rendered it so cold it shattered on impact.
“Okay,” Alex said over the radio, “come on in.”
Kara laughed, knowing she was being called in because they were now out of missiles.  She twisted slightly, shooting back towards the small command post.  She slowed as she approached, dropping subsonic so she didn’t shatter any of the equipment, and finally pulled up at the last minute, then drifted down to a gentle landing.
“How was that?” she asked J’onn.
“I see you share your cousin’s appetite for wanton destruction, Miss Danvers” J’onn said.
Kara rolled her eyes.  “You are enjoying this entirely too much.”
“I’m trying to make sure you’re going to be an asset.  A novice Superhero can be a liability in the field.  So far, all you’ve proven is you can manage an intelligence asset.  I need to know you can control all of your abilities.  Strength, Stamina, Speed.”
“Well, are you convinced yet?” Kara asked.  “Because I wanna go get some breakfast and if I don’t get something to eat soon, you’re gonna see me not controlling the growling in my stomach and trust me, that’s not pretty.”
“She’s right,” Alex said.  “No one ever comes out of that looking pretty.”
Both Kara and Alex turned around at the sound of a loud chuckle behind them, only to find Vasquez standing there, holding a large bag.
“Are those…?” Kara asked, not bothering to finish her sentence as she took two steps towards Vasquez.
“Breakfast burritos from that grill down the 975,” Vasquez said.  “Extra hot sauce.”
“Oh, Rao Light,” Kara said as Vasquez handed her the bag.  “Marry me?”
Vasquez laughed.  “I think my girlfriend would object.”
Kara sat the bag on one of the work tables and pulled out a burrito, peeling the foil off it.  “Does she cook?  If so, bring her along.  I’ll marry you both.”
“Kara,” Alex said.
Vasquez just laughed harder.  “I do most of the cooking, but she’s the jealous type.”
Kara took a huge bite out of the burrito, chewing quickly, before swallowing.  “If you can cook, I can see why.”  She held up the burrito slightly.  “Thank you.”
“It’s no problem, ma’am.  My girlfriend was one of the agents on the plane with Alex, so I figure I owe you one.”
Kara smiled, and nodded.  “Glad I could help,” she said, before she wolfed down the rest of her burrito, and reached for a second one.
“Are you heading into work today?” Alex asked.
Kara shook her head, mouth too full of food to speak.  She swallowed.  “No.  Cat never works on the weekends she has Carter.  I thought once we were done, I’d do a few runs through the city, rescue some kittens from trees, show the coat of arms.  That sort of thing.”
“You sure that’s a good idea, Kara?  I know you talked to your Aunt but there are still a lot of Fort Rozz escapees out there.”
“Well, if you’d rather, I could take you out to Sanctuary.”
“Really?”
Kara nodded.  “Absolutely.  I’ve got something out there I want you to see anyway.  Something I think would be a huge help-“
“Supergirl.  Come in, Supergirl” Winn’s voice suddenly rang in her ear.
Kara reached up and touched her eat piece.  “Hey, Winn, what’s up?”
“There’s a huge fire raging down at National City port, and it is bad,” Winn said.
“I’m on it,” Kara said.  She turned to Alex.  “Fire down at the port.  Don’t let anyone eat my burritos.”
“Are you sure, Kara?  You’ve been dodging missiles and pushing pretty hard.  Even you have your limits.”
“I know,” Kara said, “but this is just a bit of x-ray vision, some freeze breath.  No big deal.  I’ll be back before you know it.”
“Just… Be careful, okay.”
“I will.  Love you.”  With that, Kara kicked off and shot into the sky, but not without hearing her sister’s answering ‘Love you too’.
***
The fire was as big and as intimidating as she remembered, but this time, as she approached, she spotted the source using her X-ray vision.  One of the pipelines used to pump oil off the tankers was ruptured and feeding the fire, which explained why her freeze breath hadn’t worked the last time.  She spotted the fire chief, and dropped down beside him.
“Chief,” she said.
“Thank God,” he said.  “Can you blow this out?”
“No,” Kara replied.  “Not yet.  There’s a leaking oil line inside the flames.  If I hit it with my freeze breath, it will just spread the fire.”
“Shit,” he said.  “Can you move the tanker?”
“Not unless you have tow chains handy.  If I try to just grab on and drag it, the welds will split open like a rotten banana.  I need to go into the fire, and cut off the fuel supply.  While I do that, move your water line between the flames and the ship, to hold it back.  Buy me five minutes, and I’ll be able to put this out.”
“Okay,” he said.  “Will do.”
Kara nodded and lifted off again as he shifted his men’s focus to pushing the edge of the fire back and controlling the advance instead of trying to put it out.  She dove into the heart of the inferno and grabbed a barrel, tearing it in half and slapped the metal over the tear in the oil pipe.  A careful blast from her heat vision formed a weld which would hold for a while, then she kicked off, rising above the fire, and carefully used her freeze breath to put out the flames, as well as cool off the oil-filled pipes.
Once she was done, she flew back over to the chief.
“Okay, you need to get a repair crew in here as fast as possible.  I’ve welded a piece of steel over the tear in the pipe, but the steel is low quality, and the weld isn’t especially solid since I couldn’t clean or prep the surfaces or get it hot enough to boil out the impurities without risking setting off what was in the pipe.”
The chief nodded.  “Right.  Is it cool enough to go in?”
“Yes,” she said.  “You want me to show you?”
“Please.”
***
“Either I finally managed to get the last of the smell out, or my sense of smell has just given up on me,” Kara said as she came out of the DEO locker room dressed in a black t-shirt, and a black pair of BDU pants that had been tucked away in some storage locker or other, along with a fresh pair of boots and socks.
Alex sniffed, “Definitely the latter,” she said.
Kara reached out and gave her a light shove.  “Shut up,” she said.  “Seriously, that was terrible.”
“Yeah, it was bad enough with a human nose,” Alex said.  “I can’t even imagine with a Kryptonian one.”
“Any progress on the suit?” Kara asked.
“That’s probably going to take more time.”
“Just have them put it in a sealed bag,” Kara said.  “I’ll take care of it at home.”
“How are you going to get home” Alex asked.
“Drive me?”
***
Kara sat the oversized bag of subs down on the counter as Alex locked the door behind them, and reached for a plate for Alex and a serving platter for herself.  She took a moment to fish out Hot Pastrami and the bag of Salt and Vinegar chips and put them on a plate, before carefully arranging her two cheese steaks and two meatball subs on the platter.
“Where do you want this?” Alex asked, holding up the sealed biohazard bag containing Kara’s Supergirl suit.
“Konex,” Kara said, grinning.  “End stealth mode.”
Alex jumped a bit as Konex decloaked.
“How can I be of assistance, Lady Kara?” the robot asked
“Kara,” Alex said, “What is that?”
Kara turned around and opened the refrigerator, pulling out a diet coke for Alex and a two liter of grape soda for herself.  “He’s a Kryptonian tier-four cyber-construct, designed to operate as a personal attendant.”
“Okay,” Alex said.  “And you didn’t think to mention him back when we were growing up?”
Kara laughed.  “Clark has one named Kelex in his stronghold up north.  One of the first things I got from J’onn when we started working together was a crystal containing Konex’s memories.  He was my personal attendant growing up.  Kelex was able to build him a new body last year and download the memories from the crystal.  I would have told you about him, but I couldn’t figure out how to do that without telling you I’d gotten stuff out of my pod.”
Alex frowned.  “Kara, I’ve been all over your pod.  Everything that was in it is catalogued at the DEO.”
“You didn’t know about the hidden compartment behind the seat,” Kara said.  “Konex, this is Alex Danvers.  Scan for identity match, and execute stored order four.”
Kara watched as Konex approached Alex and scanned her briefly.
“It is a pleasure to meet you, Lady Alex.”
“What just happened?” Alex asked.
“Konex just added your biometrics and genetic profile to the security protocols for his control programs, as well as for those of Sanctuary.  In short, if anything happens to me, the chain of command goes You, Kal-El, J’onn, Diana Prince, Bruce Wayne.  There’s a list of people after that, but honestly, right now, you’re the only person who even knows they are on the list.”
Alex turned to look at her.  “Diana Prince and Bruce Wayne? Why… What…” Alex raised her free hand to cover her face.
Kara took pity on her and walked over, taking the bag with her Supergirl outfit and handing it to Konex.
“Clean that, please,” she said.  “Or, if it’s easier, just recycle it and make a new one.  Also, while you’re working, make me about twenty spares, and fit them all with anti-Kryptonite shields, and spare coms.”
“Yes, Lady Kara.”
She turned back to Alex, carefully prying her hand away from her face.  “I’m sorry,” she said.
Alex shook her head.  “No, I shouldn’t react like this.  It’s just…”
“A week ago, I was your baby sister.  Now, I’m pulling super advanced AI-controlled robots out of thin air and telling you Bruce Wayne is Batman and Diana Prince is Wonder Woman,” Kara said.  “I get it.  Believe me.  I was on the other side of this once, and I did not handle it well.”
“Can we just sit down for a bit?” Alex said.
Kara nodded.  “Go ahead.  I’ll grab the food and be right there.”
Alex walked over and dropped down on the couch.  Kara gathered up their food and made her way over to sit down next to her sister.  They ate in silence, Kara doing her best to eat at a human pace.  She was finished with all four of her subs and about halfway through a family-sized bag of sour cream and onion potato chips when Alex finally spoke up.
“How much more haven’t you told me?” Alex asked.
Kara sat down the bag of chips.  “Big things, or little things?”
“Big things?” Alex asked.
Kara thought about it for a minute, before answering.  “Two,” she said.  “There are two big things I haven’t told you yet.  The first is how I found out about all of this, and believe me when I say that it’s not something I want to keep to myself, but I can’t tell you about the first one without telling you about the second one.  The second one is…”  Kara took a deep breath.  “I’m afraid the second one will make you hate me,” she said.
“Kara,” Alex said, turning towards her, “You’re my sister, and I love you, no matter what.”
Kara nodded.  “I love you too, Alex, but sometimes secrets can drive even the closest people apart.”
“Then why not just tell me?” Alex asked.
“Because you’d die,” Kara said.
“Kara, I’m not-“
“Alex,” Kara said, cutting her off, “I know how good you are.  I would trust you to have my back in any fight.  In fact, I’m pretty sure, if push comes to shove, you could take down a Kryptonian as long as you had time to prepare for the fight.  But if I told you about this, you’d want to do something.  Because you’re good and kind and one of the most loving, caring people I’ve ever met.  But this isn’t a fight you can win.  Not right now.  Not while we’ve got Fort Rozz to deal with.”
“Kara, you’re scaring me,” Alex said.  “Whatever this is, you shouldn’t have to carry it alone.  Please, let me help?”
Kara reached out and took Alex’s hands on hers, squeezing them as she looked at her sister, and remembering the last time they’d had a secret between them.  The fallout from her sister lying about who killed Astra had nearly destroyed National City.  It wasn’t a good memory, and the truth was, it had taken a long time for her to really get over it.  The Red K incident had been proof of that.
The issue wasn’t that she didn’t trust Alex, it was that she knew Alex.  If she told Alex, there was a good chance Alex would do something stupid, like go after Cadmus on her own.  On the other hand, if she didn’t tell anyone, and something happened to her, the timeline could turn out even worse than before.  And there was the simple weight of the secret itself.
“If I tell you, you have to promise you won’t do anything.  Not until we deal with Fort Rozz.”
Alex nodded.  “I get it, Kara.  One threat at a time.”
Kara sighed.  “No, Alex, you don’t.  This isn’t small.  This isn’t like promising Eliza you’d finish your homework before you go surfing.  If you make this promise, you have to keep it, no matter how much it hurts. No matter what.  You have to keep it.  Okay?”
This time it seemed to get the message across.  Alex sat there, and Kara could see her thinking it over, considering it, before she finally nodded.  “Okay.  I promise.  I won’t do anything until we deal with Fort Rozz.”
Kara nodded.  “Have you ever heard of Project Cadmus?”
“Yeah.  Some sort of research project.  We send them samples from any aliens we capture, and if an alien dies, either during capture, or in their cell, we send the remains to Cadmus for study.”
“They don’t just study alien remains,” Kara said.  “Back before J’onn took over the DEO, Hank Henshaw…  The real Hank Henshaw, deliberately killed a lot of aliens and classified the kills as ‘killed resisting capture’ so he could funnel the remains to Cadmus. If you go through the records you’ll also find a lot of aliens who were ‘transferred to other holding facilities’, only they never arrived.  Instead, they wound up in Cadmus.  After J’onn took over and their supply of live aliens dried up, they started their own capture program.  Sam Lane procures for them sometimes too.”
“That’s horrible,” Alex said, “but-“
“They take humans, too,” Kara said.  She took a deep breath.  “This is the part I’ve been afraid to tell you…  Alex, they have Jeremiah.”
“What?” Alex said.  “They…  They have my dad’s body?”
Kara shook her head.  “No.  Not his body.”  Kara could see the exact moment realization struck.  She could see the mixture of hope and fear flooding into Alex.
“He’s…  He’s alive?” she asked.
Kara nodded.
“How long have you known?” Alex asked.
“Alex,” Kara said.  “You promised.”
“How long, Kara?”
Kara let go of Alex’s hands and reached up to grip her shoulders.  “Tell me you won’t do anything, Alex.”
“How long?” Alex asked, and Kara could hear the rage in her voice, but she didn’t answer.  She just waited.  “He’s my father,” Alex said.  “We have to do something.  We have to help him!”  Alex tried to stand up, but Kara held her in place, her grip firm enough that there wasn’t anything Alex could do, but gentle enough that Alex didn’t hurt herself.
“I’m sorry, Alex,” Kara said.  “I’m so sorry.”
“Let me go,” Alex said.
“You promised,” Kara said.
The slap surprised them both.  One moment, Alex was sitting there, struggling, and the next, Kara felt the flat of Alex’s hand slam into the side of her face.  It was so unexpected, she didn’t have time to roll with it, and instead of hurting her, Alex ended up whimpering and cradling her hand.  Kara let her go, moving back a little bit as she looked down, checking with x-ray vision to make sure Alex hadn’t broken her hand.
Alex, for her part, was looking back, and forth between her hand, and Kara’s face.
“I…”
“It’s okay,” Kara said.
Alex shook her head.  “No.  No, it’s not.  I shouldn’t have…”
Kara reached out and took Alex’s injured hand in her own, blowing a very gentle stream of cool air over it.
“It’s okay,” Kara said.  “I’m the one who should be sorry.  It’s my fault Jeremiah was on that mission.  My fault Cadmus has him.  My fault Fort Rozz is here.  My fault Myriad is a threat.  My fault Cadmus even exists.”  She looked up into Alex’s eyes.  “Sometimes, I think it would have been better if I never made it off Krypton,” she said.
The look of horror on Alex’s face wasn’t something Kara expected to see in that moment, but on some level, it was comforting.
“No,” Alex said.  “No.  Kara, you can’t think like that.  Please.  I’m sorry.  You’re right, this is big and I just…” she shrugged, helplessly.
“Please, tell me you’ll keep your promise.  I swear, I have people working on getting your father out.  Clark knows almost everything I do about Cadmus and he’s got Wonder Woman and Batman for backup.  If they can get Jeremiah out, they will.”
Alex nodded.  “Okay,” she said.  “Okay.  But, as soon as Myriad is out of the way-“
“We find Cadmus, and we burn it to the ground,” Kara said.  “Every last bit of it.”
***
The next morning was rough.  Kara didn’t really need sleep, but she and Alex had talked for hours and it had been emotionally exhausting.  Kara had told her everything she could about Cadmus, leaving out only Lillian Luthor, Simon Tycho and Hank Henshaw’s involvement.  She’d told her everything about Astra, too, but it was all hard.  It was like draining an infected wound, only stopping before it was entirely clean, and bandaging it up with half the rot still inside.  There was so much she couldn’t tell her.  She’d wanted to talk about the battle of CatCo plaza, about the Third Army and the war of light, about Darkseid and the anti-life equation.
She couldn’t.  Not yet.  She couldn’t tell Alex until she was ready to tell J’onn, and she couldn’t tell J’onn until she could prove all of it, because it sounded insane.  Sometimes, she wondered if she was insane.  On the other hand, if she got to hug her sister in the morning before she went into work to see Winn and Cat, maybe insanity wasn’t so bad.
Though today was the day Cat demanded an interview with her in the original timeline.  She was wondering if that was still going to happen when the elevator door opened, and she saw Winn waiting for her, holding a large pink box.
“What’s this?” she asked.
“Just a little something Maggie and I chipped in for,” he said, lifting the lid.
“Is that a brownie pizza?” she asked, her face splitting into an enormous smile.
“Yes,” he said.  “We wanted to do a cake, but we thought a ‘Congratulations on your first big disaster’ cake would be a little obvious.”
“Oh!” she squealed as she threw her arms around Winn, hugging him as tightly as she dared.  “Thank you,” she said.  “You have no idea how much I needed something like this this morning.”  She stepped back, still smiling at him as she picked up the envelope containing Cat’s morning mail from the reception desk, before heading over to her own desk.
Winn sat the brownie pizza down on her desk.  “You okay?” he asked.
“Rough weekend,” she said.  “Alex and I had a big fight.  We sorted it out.  And I saw my Aunt.”
“Your Aunt?” Winn asked.  “Like,” he made a wavey motion with his hand Kara assumed was supposed to indicate flying, “that Aunt?”
“Yes.  That probably went as well as could be expected,” she said.
‘Drunk, 9:00 AM.  That’s the last time I have breakfast with Ruth Bader Ginsberg.’
Kara shook her head as she reached for Cat’s coffee.  “She’s here,” she said as she lifted the lid and gave it a quick zap of heat vision.
“At least now I know how you do that,” Winn said as he dropped into his seat and pulled up his goof-off spreadsheet so it would look like he was working.
The door to the elevator opened, and Cat strode out.  Kara put the latte into her hand.
“Your latte, Ms. Grant,” she said.
Cat took a sip and let out a small moan of satisfaction.  “Hot, as always,” she said.  “Content meeting, two minutes.  My office.”
***
“I assume we’re all aware of Supergirl’s latest act of derring-do,” Cat said.
“Walking into a burning oil fire to cut off the fuel supply, then blowing the fire out,” James said.  “Pretty impressive for someone who’s only been on the job a week.”
“Hmmm, yes,” Cat said.  “Our girl has been making quite a showing of herself all over National City.”
“Isn’t that a good thing?” James asked.
“It would be, if it weren’t the front-page story on the Daily Planet.  Their fifth, in as many days.  Which annoys me, because they already have their own go-to Superhero, and now they’re trying to steal mine.”
Cat stalked around from behind her desk to stand in front of it.  “Now, when I branded her, there was a certain implicit expectation that she would be gracing the pages of *our* publications.”  Cat turned towards Kara.  “Tell me something, Kara.”
“Hmmm, me?” Kara asked.
“Yes,” Cat answered.  “Do you really think it was coincidence that one of the Planet’s star reporters just happened through these offices last week?”
Kara shrugged.  “I never know with Clark.”
“Uh, huh,” Cat said.  “Well, coincidence or not, the Daily Planet is not taking Supergirl from us.  We are going to take back control of the Supergirl narrative, starting now.”
“How are we going to do that?” Dave asked.
“I want an interview,” Cat said.
“Okay,” Kara said.  “When would you like me to set that up?”
Every eye in the room turned towards her.
“You, Keira?” Cat asked.
“Don’t I usually schedule all your interviews?” she said.
Cat’s eyes narrowed.  “This one might be a little different.”
“Have I ever failed to deliver, Ms. Grant?”
“Do I need to bring up the Justin Bieber incident?”
“I believe there’s an amendment to my contract that prevents either of us from ever speaking of that again,” Kara said, shuddering.
Cat sighed.  “Fine.  Go ahead and see if you can arrange it, but I want a backup plan,” she said, turning to James.  “Do you think your friend in blue could arrange a sit down?”
“It doesn’t really work that way,” James said.
“Mmmm… Well, if Clark Kent, or for that matter, Lois Lane or any of the other hags over at the Planet get this before we do, I’m going to hold you and Keira personally responsible since you’re inviting the enemy into my house.”
“Now, I want a sit down with Supergirl.  A heart-to-heart, girl-to-girl.  By the end of the week.”  Cat waved her hand in a shooing gesture.  “Go get it.”
Kara started to turn around, but Cat’s voice stopped her.
“Not you, Keira,” she said.
Kara turned back to Cat.  “Something else I can do for you, Ms. Grant?”
Cat waited until the entire office was empty.  “You really think you can get me an interview with Supergirl?”
“I do.”
Cat stared at her for a moment, and let out a breath.  “You get me that interview and we’ll have a discussion about your salary, since apparently I’m not paying what other people are offering you.”
“That’s not necessary, Ms. Grant.”
“Yes, it is,” Cat said.  “You’re never going to get ahead if you don’t learn how to demand what you’re due, Keira.”
Kara stared back at Cat for a moment, then nodded.  “Okay,” she said.  “How about we start with you using my real name, since I know you know it.”
Cat smiled.  “Get me the interview, and we’ll talk.”
Kara laughed and shook her head as she turned and left the office, only to find James waiting for her at her desk.
“Are you sure you want to do that interview?” he asked.  The question threw Kara, because in the original timeline, he’d been the one to reassure her when she said she couldn’t do it.
“I don’t see why not,” Kara said.  “My cousin managed to hide right in front of Perry White’s face for eleven years.”
“Yeah, and Lois Lane was fooled for a good five seconds,” James said.
Kara rolled her eyes.  “Yeah, well, Cat Grant isn’t checking out my ass every time I turn my back.”
James shook his head.  “Could have fooled me,” he said, before he headed for his office.
Winn appeared a second later.  “He bothering you?” he asked.
“A little,” Kara said.  “He means well, but he hasn’t gotten it through his head that I don’t need a big brother.”
“Well, if he gets to be a problem let me know.  I’ll get Maggie to rough him up.”
Kara smiled.  “You and Maggie really hit it off, huh?”
“Yeah,” he said.  “She’s like the really butch older sister I never knew I wanted.”
“Oh, please.  She’s a soft futch, at best.”
“She loads her own ammo, Kara.”
“Don’t care,” Kara said.  “If she can’t forge a sword out of a load of iron ore, she’s not butch.”
“Who have you been hanging out with?”
“Wonder Woman,” Kara said.  “Now, the real question is, am I expected to share my brownie pizza?”
Winn laughed.  “Now what kind of friends would we be if we made you share?”
