Day 0
âY/N, can I see you in my office?â Yoongiâs voice cut through the ambient buzz of the office as he appeared at your cubicle. You blinked up at him, his request causing a ripple of curiosity among your surrounding coworkers, though no one dared to show it openly.
You hesitated, a flicker of doubt crossing your mind. Was I in trouble? Did he hate my last research project? Your mind raced through the possibilities. Yoongi had praised your work just last week, but what if heâd changed his mind? The thought of him taking back his compliments made your stomach twist. With a sigh, you saved your work and rose to follow him. The walk to his office felt unnervingly like being summoned to the principalâs office in high school.
Though your colleagues barely glanced in your direction, the nerves still had your palms sweating. You tried to wipe them discreetly on your pants as you stepped inside his office.
Yoongi moved behind his desk with casual ease, sinking into his chair as though he hadnât just rattled your nerves with his sudden appearance. You stood awkwardly for a moment until he waved you toward the chair in front of his desk.
âYou can relax, Y/N. Youâre not in trouble,â he said, his tone gentle but amused. It was clear he could feel the tension radiating off you.
âI know, I know. Iâm just a worrywart. You know that,â you laughed softly, though it came out more anxious than youâd intended. âSo⌠why did you want to see me?â
Yoongi leaned forward slightly, resting his arms on the desk as he watched you. âIâve have an assignment for you. Something better than your usual research work.â
You raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued as he began rifling through the disorganized pile of files and papers littering his desk. Youâd been at Composure for a while, mostly doing background research for other writersâ articles. But youâd been hoping for an opportunity to step out of the shadows, to prove yourself as more than just a behind-the-scenes contributor. Maybe this is it?
When Yoongi finally found what he was looking for, he pulled out an old magazine and dropped it in front of you with a soft thud. You glanced down at the cover, your eyes widening as you saw the issue was from 2003.
âHow to Lose a Guy in Ten Days,â Yoongi said, leaning back in his chair with a knowing glint in his eyes.
You picked up the magazine and began flipping through it, skimming the pages until you found the article. A sense of familiarity washed over youâthis was one of those interesting pieces people still whispered about around the office. âIâm confused.â
âThis piece was a massive hit when it came out,â he explained, lacing his fingers together as he leaned back. âLana, one of the higher-ups, was the editor at the time this particular piece came out. She brought it up recently, said she thinks itâs time for something like this to make a comeback.â
âYou want me to do this?â you asked, still reeling from the audacity of the concept. You skimmed through the details, noting the original author, Andy. She had gone to extreme lengths to sabotage a relationship for the sake of the article. You couldnât help but cringe at some of the tactics sheâd employed.
âNot exactly,â Yoongi replied with a small chuckle. âThe feedback back then was that the whole experiment felt a bit too unrealistic. Readers loved it and it was a funny read, but many thought they donât do things this intense. Lanaâs idea was to take the same concept, but⌠stretch it out.â
âStretch it out?â you echoed, still trying to wrap your head around the idea.
âYeah. Ten days is too quick for something like this. We want to make it feel more genuine. Instead of a mad dash to drive the guy away, we want to see what happens over a longer period. A month, maybe two. Let the tension build naturally.â
You leaned back in your chair, letting the idea swirl around in your head. It was ambitious, maybe even a bit reckless, but there was no denying it would be a challenge.. âSo⌠you want me to date someone andâwhat? Subtly sabotage it over time?â
âExactly. Actually date but do all the classic early relationship mistakes,â Yoongi explained, his eyes gleaming with the thrill of the concept. âItâs an experiment in human behavior, relationships, and how much people are willing to overlook.â
âSo like talking about something personal way too fast, or inviting yourself into their life way too quickly and then write about it?â you prattled on a bit, it was picking at the ideas in your brain in the right way.
Yoongi smiled, clearly pleased with your interest. âI brought this to you because you have more than proven yourself here. Youâve been doing excellent research, and I want to see how you handle something of this scale. Especially because this would be a feature piece.â
Your heart skipped a beat at the compliment, but there was still a question gnawing at you. âIâm glad you are trusting me with something like this, especially with such a high-profile piece. But⌠I have to ask, sirâwhy do you think Iâm the right person for this?â
Yoongi leaned forward slightly, his expression more thoughtful. âBecause I want to challenge you. I like your research and I like how you write, you understand the people who read our columns on a deeper level. I think you have more in you. I want to see if you can handle something outside of your comfort zone.â His voice softened, but the weight of his words wasnât lost on you. âAnd after something like this, Iâd be more than happy to move you on to bigger and better pieces.â
The subtle hint of a promotion sent a jolt of excitement through you. âReally?â
âReally,â Yoongi confirmed, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
It was all you could do to keep the excitement from bubbling over. An actual writing assignment, something that could elevate your standing in the magazine, was exactly what you had been waiting for.
âI donât even know what to say other than thank you.âÂ
You fidget with the magazine in your hands, resisting the urge to curl the edges. Your mind raced, trying to think of what a realistic timeline for the piece could look likeâsomething ambitious, but doable.
âHow about⌠How to Lose a Guy in Thirty Days? A longer timeline, more idealistic. A month in is usually when new relationships start to fall apart. Itâs after the initial getting-to-know-someone phase,â you suggest, throwing the idea out there, hoping Yoongi would take the bait.
âThirty days, huh?â He raises an eyebrow, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. âYou sure youâre up for it?â
âYes, sir.â You nod, your confidence building as you think about the possibilities.
âGood,â Yoongi replies, leaning back in his chair with a satisfied look. âLetâs start on Monday, after we get through this print run. That gives you a few days to find the poor guy.â
âRight. Thank you, Mr. Min.â You stand up, your heart racing as you try to play it cool. But as soon as you exit his office, you can barely contain your excitement.
âOh my god, oh my god,â you mutter under your breath as you rush to your desk. Your fingers fly across the keyboard as you start jotting down notes, pulling out sticky notes and scribbling ideas, trying to organize your thoughts.
Ronnie, sitting in the neighboring cubicle, leans back to peer around the divider, noticing your frenzied state. She rolls her chair into your space, sliding up next to you with a curious look.
âWhatâs got you in such a hurry?â she asks, raising an eyebrow as she watches you type furiously. A laugh escapes her when she sees the pen stuck in your mouth and the growing pile of sticky notes attached to the old magazine.
âI gob a columb,â you mumble through the pen, barely pausing your typing.
Ronnie plucks the pen from your mouth. âTry that again.â
âIâm writing my first column.â You repeat, finally turning to face her, your excitement breaking through.
âNo way!â Ronnie stands, her voice a little too loud, drawing a few glances from nearby desks. She sits back down and grabs your shoulders. âThatâs so awesome! Your first column! Whatâs it going to be about?â
You hand her the magazine, pointing to the title. âThis.â
âHow to Lose a Guy in Ten Days?â She raises her eyebrows in surprise, flipping through the article. âYouâre seriously going to do this?â
âWell, not exactly the same,â you say with a grin, watching as she reads through the outlandish tactics in the original piece. âJust similar.â
Ronnieâs eyes widen as she reaches some of the more extreme parts of the article. âOkay, this is crazy, all the things this girl did to this guy. Oh my god.â She rocked in disbelief, continuing the read through. âAwe, ends bittersweet though.âÂ
âItâs going to be How to Lose A Guy in Thirty Days this time.âÂ
âA month?â She laughs and shakes her head, you give her a confused look.Â
âWhat? I can do this!â You bump her shoulder.Â
âDo what?â Namjoon strolls into your cubical looking between the both of you.
âKid got her first column.â Ronnie sings she has a proud grin on her face. You spin around to look at Namjoon.Â
His face lights up at the news, âThatâs so awesome! Congrats!â He rubs your hair messing it up, you bat his hands away smoothing out your hair.Â
âThanks Joon.âÂ
âWhatâs it on?â Namjoon leans against your desk along side Ronnie.Â
Ronnie hands him the magazine flipped open to the article. He takes it and examines it for a moment, he reads along and his eyes widen at times. You continue scribbling down some thoughts while he does this. Namjoon was a silent reader but would always share his full thoughts when he was done.Â
âWoah, this is wild.â Namjoon flips back to the beginning of the article, like he had to read it over again.Â
âI know the original one is a little insane but we are doing it differently this time.â You explain, Namjoon had concern written all over his face reading through the article again.Â
âQuote, âafter five days I decided to go ahead and take things to the next level between us. I completely redecorate his apartment with pink attire and stuffed animals everywhere.â Namjoon reads the section out loud. âShe only knew him for five days?âÂ
You nod, âI donât know how she was so brave to do all of that. Luckily Yoongi said I donât have to be as extreme as this. Just more casually clingy and needy, do small things that most people think are normal but seem to send guys running before anything serious can begin.âÂ
âYeah, I definitely hope you donât end up âphotoshopping your baby pictures together.ââ Ronnie adds with a grin.
You laugh, shaking your head. âGod, no. Iâd sooner die of embarrassment. I donât have the energy for that level of crazy.â
Namjoon leans back in his chair, one eyebrow raised in slight concern. âSo, what is the plan then? Youâve got something in mind, right?â
You sigh dramatically. âNot sure yet. Iâve got until Monday to find a guy and come up with some sort of idea of how I want to do this.â
âOh, can we help?â Ronnieâs eyes light up as she bounces in her chair, practically vibrating with excitement.
âHelp find the guy?â
âObviously, and with the torture,â she adds, looking way too enthusiastic.
âIâm not torturing him,â you chuckle, âjust⌠irritating him a little. You know, for research purposes.â
âUh-huh.â Namjoonâs teasing grin softens as he looks at you, a hint of doubt creeping in. âBut are you really sure you can do this, like⌠casually?â
You blink at him. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, come on,â Namjoon says with a snort, gesturing vaguely at you. âYou wear your heart in a pink, sparkly basket for everyone to see. Are you sure you wonât fall for the poor guy instead?â
âI donât do that! And I will not!â You protest, but Namjoon and Ronnie exchange a look that screams they definitely think you do.
âIâve never seen you not get your hopes up after a date or two,â Ronnie says, shrugging sympathetically.
âWell, this time will be different,â you say, folding your arms defiantly. âItâs just business. I have to get the guy to break up with me anyway.â
They werenât wrong, though, and you know it. Youâve always been one of those people who swoon at love songs and daydream about movie-perfect endings. You were the exact type of person this article was written for in the first place. You did get attached too quickly and were getting hurt too often. But this? This was just an assignment. A game. You wouldnât get hurt if you knew it had to end from the start.
âYouâll see.â You add with more confidence, determined to prove them wrong.
âIâll believe it when I see it,â Ronnie teases, rolling her chair back toward her desk. It was well past time for her to get to her own work.Â
Namjoon shakes his head with a chuckle. âGood luck to this guy, I guess,â he mutters, though thereâs warmth in his voice. Heâs seen you get your hopes up too many times to believe you could really keep things casual.
But this time, you were determined. No expectations. No daydreaming. It was all just work.
Across town, though, someone else was perfectly content with his easygoing, no-strings-attached lifestyle. Jungkook, waking up in someone elseâs bed was just another morning for him. He opened his eyes but was blinded by the morning light. He rolled over and looked around, he had no idea where he was. Memories of last night vaguely coming back to the front of his mind.Â
He looks over to see a sleeping girl in the same bed. He stands from the bed and manages to find his phone. Seeing the time.Â
âShit.â He rushes to find his scattered items and puts his clothes back on. Tip toeing his way around the room and manages to get out the front door without a fuss.Â
Getting out of the building, Jungkook blinked as the morning sun hit him square in the face. He rubbed his eyes, still groggy from a less-than-restful sleep. Scanning the unfamiliar streets, he had no idea what neighborhood he was in, but that was par for the course these days. He pulled out his phone and called for an Uber, slipping his sunglasses on as he waited.
Another late night, another random bed. This wasnât exactly new territory, but he couldnât help feeling off. Normally, Thursdays were a quiet night in, but when Jimin and Taehyung wanted to go out, Jungkook wasnât about to turn them down. And, as always, the night had ended the way it usually did for himâblurry and chaotic.
By the time Jungkook made it to the office, it was later than he would normally prefer to arrive. Slipping through the doors, he did his best to avoid attention although Hoseokâs keen eyes were already tracking him. Jungkook tried to get settled quietly, but it was pointless. Hoseokâs desk, conveniently right next to his, made stealth impossible.
âLook what the cat dragged in,â Hoseok sang, swiveling in his chair to grin at Jungkook. He tapped a few keys on his keyboard, then gave Jungkook an exaggerated once-over. âDid you lose a bet, or is that last nightâs shirt?â
Jungkook smirked as he slid into his seat. âHey, Iâm here, arenât I?â
âYeah, but in yesterdayâs clothes. Whatâd you do? Roll straight from the bar to your desk?â Hoseok raised an eyebrow, clicking away on his mouse as he pulled up their latest coding project.
âPretty much,â Jungkook admitted, booting up his own computer. âIâll head home at lunch and change. No one cares what I wear to debug.â
Hoseok shook his head with a laugh. âYouâre gonna blind the clients with your wrinkled t-shirts one of these days.â
âFair enough,â Jungkook chuckled, typing in his password. âBut Iâm still better at the code reviews, so they canât complain too much.â
Hoseok conceded with a nod, leaning back in his chair. âRough night?â
Jungkook rubbed the back of his neck. âYou could say that. Taehyung and Jimin were relentless. Didnât stop until the bar kicked us out.â
âAh, classic,â Hoseok said with a grin. âThey never know when to quit.â
Jungkook smirked, though he felt the exhaustion settling in his bones. âTheyâve got energy for days, man. But, hey, what about tonight? You in?â
Hoseok hesitated, glancing at the lines of code on his screen before looking back at Jungkook. âAgain? You donât look like youâre dying to go out tonight.â
Jungkook chuckled, leaning back in his chair. âI mean, Iâm wrecked, but you know Iâm down. Someoneâs gotta keep Taehyung from getting us banned from another bar.â
Hoseok shook his head, clearly amused. âI dunno, man. I might actually take it easy tonight. Jiminâs been texting like heâs planning another big one, and I donât know if Iâve got the energy to babysit.â
âYou? Too tired to party?â Jungkook teased, raising an eyebrow. âWerenât you just complaining last week that we only go out when youâre drowning in deadlines?â
âI didnât say Iâm backing out,â Hoseok defended, though his reluctance was obvious. âIâm just... thinking about it.â
âThinking about it, my ass. Youâll be there. Iâll text Jimin, tell him to go easy on the plans.â Jungkook turned back to his monitor, his fingers flying over the keys as he opened the project files for their current assignment.
Hoseok chuckled. âYeah, alright. But if I show up and Taehyungâs dancing on tables again, Iâm leaving early.â
âDeal,â Jungkook said with a grin.
Then Hoseokâs smirk deepened, and he shot a glance at Jungkook. âBy the way, has she called you yet?â
Jungkook frowned, glancing sideways. âWho?â
âChannel. Sheâs been texting me. Again.â Hoseokâs grin turned into a mock look of annoyance. âSeriously, bro, how is she still hitting me up to ask about you? You need to fix that.â
Jungkook groaned, running a hand through his hair. âI thought I made it clear weâre done.â
âWell, apparently she didnât get the memo. She asked me yesterday if you were âokay,â like Iâm your personal messenger or something.â
Jungkook sighed, his fingers stilling on his keyboard. âI havenât heard from her in weeks. Sheâs probably fishing for info, trying to get back in touch. She wanted something serious, and I was always upfront about keeping it casual.â
Hoseok raised an eyebrow. âAnd she didnât take that well?â
âShe acted like she understood, but... yeah, not really. I broke it off before things got messy.â Jungkook sighed. âNow sheâs bugging you instead.â
âLucky me,â Hoseok muttered. âSheâs persistent, Iâll give her that. But seriously, dude, sheâs asking me if youâre, like, in a dark place or something. I think sheâs hoping for a window to swoop back in.â
Jungkook groaned, leaning back in his chair. âTell her Iâve joined a monastery.â
Hoseok laughed. âSure, Iâll let her know youâve taken a vow of silence and reflection.â
The rest of the morning flew by in a blur of coding and testing modules. By the time lunch rolled around, Jungkook had managed to convince Jimin to keep the plans for the night low-keyâjust a few drinks at a bar they liked. Hoseok seemed more on board with the promise of a relaxed evening, and Jungkook was glad. As much as he loved the chaos, even he was feeling the need for something calmer.
When they arrived at the bar that evening, it was more crowded than theyâd expected. The hum of conversation, laughter, and clinking glasses filled the air, and the warmth of bodies packed in tight hit them as they wove their way through the crowd.
âSo much for a quiet night,â Hoseok muttered, dodging a couple who were clearly several drinks in.
Jungkook grinned, nudging him. âCome on, itâs Friday. What did you expect?â
âLess people and more chairs,â Hoseok replied, though the grin on his face said he wasnât too upset about it.
Jungkook laughed, scanning the bar for a spot to settle in. Despite his earlier exhaustion, he could feel the pull of another night out with his friends, the familiar buzz of energy creeping in. There was something about the chaos of it all that he couldnât resist.
âOver here!â Jiminâs voice cut through the noise, his arm waving above the sea of people as he flagged them down. He and Taehyung had already secured a table in the corner.
Jungkook and Hoseok exchanged a glance before making their way over, dodging elbows and weaving past groups of friends clustered around the bar. As they reached the table and took their seats, Hoseok let out a deep sigh.
âJesus, there are so many people here tonight,â he muttered, running a hand through his hair. âMaybe I should have stayed home.â
Jimin smirked, leaning back in his chair with his drink in hand. âAww, come on. Itâs been forever since weâve been out together.â
Jungkook chuckled, patting Hoseok on the shoulder. âIt was definitely a struggle convincing him to come tonight.â
Hoseok held up his hands in surrender, a playful grin tugging at the corner of his lips. âHey, I was promised a chill night with some drinks. Thatâs my kind of Friday night.â
Before anyone could say more, Taehyung appeared at the table, balancing a tray of drinks with ease. âHere you go, gentlemen,â he said, passing them around with a flourish.
A round of thank-yous followed as each of the guys took their drinks. Jungkook took a long sip, letting the cool, bitter taste of his beer settle on his tongue as he leaned back in his chair, finally starting to relax.
âSo,â Taehyung said after a moment, turning to Jungkook with a curious smile, âwhere did you disappear last night, man?â
Jungkook barely had time to respond before Jimin interjected, his tone teasing. âWhere do you think he ran off to?â Jimin wiggled his eyebrows in fake suspicion.
The grin on his face made it clear he was referring to Jungkookâs extracurricular activities.
Taehyung snickered, shaking his head. âOh, I see. Anything to tell? Did you find the love of your life?â His voice was full of amusement as he took another sip of his drink.
Hoseok snorted, rolling his eyes as he leaned back in his chair. âYeah, right.â
Jungkook narrowed his eyes playfully, tipping his head in Hoseokâs direction. âHey, you never know.â
âSure,â Hoseok said with a laugh, bumping Jungkookâs shoulder. âIâm sure she felt some kind of deep connection.â
Jimin waved a hand in Hoseokâs direction, dismissing him with a grin. âLeave him alone.â
But Hoseok wasnât ready to let it go just yet. He shrugged, glancing around the table. âI mean, as long as Iâve known him, Iâve never seen him be serious with someone.â
Jungkook felt the familiar twist in his gut at the comment but didnât let it show. It wasnât that he didnât want something seriousâit just hadnât happened in years. He took another sip of his beer, trying to brush off the remark. He had become somewhat comfortable in his solace and easy hook ups. Last thing he had to something serious was what he had with Channel, and that wasnât even hardly serious.
Broke it off because she changed her mind about what she was wanting from him, Jungkook just really didnât see a future with her and had always made his feelings about their relationship clear. He really came off looking like a dick but he didnât want to drag her along. He didnât want to drag anyone along.Â
âI can be serious when I want to be.â Jungkook took another sip of his beer.Â
âYeah for like a day.â Taehyung teases.Â
âNot even, more like an afternoon.â Jimin jumps on him with a laugh.Â
âTry thirty minutes!â Hoseok adds on to the end before Jungkook waves them all of.Â
âThirty minutes?â he raised an eyebrow, âGive me more credit than that.â
âFine, thirty-one.â Taehyung added on with another laugh.Â
âWhatever,â Jungkook rolls his eyes, âMake your jokes but I donât see any of you pulling in any serious relationships these days.â Jungkook points the top of his bottle around the group.Â
âHey, I have a date next week Iâll have you know!â Hoseok protests.
âThis isnât about us though, this is about you.â Jimin sits back in his chair.Â
âWhat about me?â
âYouâre not a relationship guy.â Taehyung sipped his beer.Â
âIâm comfortable by myself.â Jungkook crossed his arms.Â
âNothing wrong with it, I just doubt you could ever be serious with someone.â Jimin shrugs.Â
âIâd be a better boyfriend than you.â Jungkook kicks Jimin's leg under the table.Â
âYeah maybe when youâre fifty and decide itâs time to settle down.â Taehyung gives Jungkook a smirk.Â
âNo way, I bet I could be a better boyfriend than all three of you.â Jungkook was getting too serious and Jimin and Taehyug smelt a challenge in the air.Â
âWanna bet on it?â Jimin cocks his head to the side. It wasnât unlike the three of them to make bets and they were always stupid.
âArenât we a little too old for bets?â Hoseok looks between the guys but he could already tell once Jimin raised the question, Jungkook was already locked into the idea.Â
âWhat are you thinking?â Jungkook leans his elbows on the table.Â
âI will bet a hundred dollars, that you couldnât keep a girlfriend for more than two weeks.â Jimin states and Jungkook almost feels insulted.Â
âCome on, I can do better than that.â Jungkook goats Jimin, Jimin looks at Taehyung.Â
âIâll buy in. 200 bucks.â Tahyung jumps on it.Â
âYou guys are morons.â Hoseok shakes his head, Jungkook was up for the challenge but two weeks was insulting.Â
âNo, I can keep a partner around for way longer than two weeks. Come on.â
âOkay, how about a month. Weâll make it 300 bucks if you can stay with the same girl for one month.â Jimin jumps on it, between him and Taehyung they would only be out one fifty each.Â
âBut we get to pick who it is.â Taehyung quickly tacts on that little stipulation.Â
âWhat? No fair.â Jungkook pouts.Â
âTotally fair. Hobi weigh in on this.â Jimin nods his head to Hoseok who was hoping to stay invisible but it seems he has been brought on as the referee.Â
âI guess it makes sense, if you pick the girl it makes it too easy for you to win.â Hoseok logics it out but this definitely wasnât starting to feel fair.
âUgh fine.â Jungkook groaned, Jimin had extended his hand for a shake, Jungkook took it and they shook on the deal.Â
âAgain, idiots.â Hoseok knew this was probably going to crash and burn and Jungkook would be out three hundred bucks. Jungkook was feeling very confident though and perhaps a little too competitive. He felt sure he could sucker these two out of three hundred bucks. As well as get to hang out with a pretty girl for a while. Putting on all of his best charm.Â
âSo when do we start?â Jungkook looks between them.Â
âHow about right now?â Jimin taps his glass.
While that played out, across the same bar, you were sitting at a booth with your friends.
Catching Jin up on your new promotion at work and your upcoming column to be. The bar was buzzing with life, the noise blending into a background hum as you spoke, but you could feel the excitement rising between you all.
âNo way,â Jinâs face lit up as he scanned the photos of the old magazine article on your phone. You had snapped a few pictures to give him the full story, and now he was reading it with wide eyes, barely containing his amusement.
âCrazy, isnât it?â Ronnie took a long sip of her cocktail, her expression still skeptical. She shook her head as if she still couldnât wrap her mind around what you were planning. âI mean, I seriously canât believe youâre going to go through with this.â
âLook,â you began defensively, though a smile tugged at your lips, âI know itâs a little out there, but Yoongi really thinks I can do this. He has his full faith in me.â
It was true. Despite the fact that this assignment would push you far outside of your comfort zone, you couldnât help but feel a sense of excitement and determination. It wasnât going to be easy, but you were confident you could handle it.
Jin, still holding your phone, read aloud with a dramatic flair: âA friend of mine made a good point that I shouldnât allow him to have a boysâ night, so I decided to get a key from his landlord to interrupt their game night!â He glanced up with an incredulous look. âShe really got a key from his landlord? Thatâs insane!â
You snatched your phone back, eyes wide. âOkay, Iâm not doing that!â you exclaimed, shaking your head. âIâm just going to be clingy, needy. Iâm not breaking into anyoneâs house!â
âGood for her, honestly,â Namjoon chimed in, cracking open a peanut from the bowl in front of him. âThe guy she picked probably deserved it.â
Ronnie nudged him with her elbow. âDidnât you read the end? She ended up falling in love with him! Realized she was wrong and that he didnât deserve all that treatment.â Ronnie leaned back in her chair, her eyes sparkling with amusement. âClassic.â
âOf course, she did,â Jin chuckled, taking another sip of his beer. His eyes flicked back to you, a teasing grin spreading across his face. âThatâs totally going to be you.â
You scoffed, rolling your eyes. âI will not.â
âPlease,â Jin said, laughing. âYouâre such a gooey romantic. You fall in love so easily.â
Namjoon and Ronnie exchanged knowing glances, both tryingâand failingânot to laugh. They knew better than anyone how quickly you could get swept up in a whirlwind of emotions. It wasnât that you were naive, just hopelessly, undeniably romantic. And they were somewhat concerned about how this whole assignment might play out.
âLook, this is a professional column,â you said, crossing your arms defensively. âItâs not like Iâm actually looking for anything serious. I just have to scare him off. Thatâs it.â
âEither that or he will be on bended knee by the end of it.â Namjoon teased.Â
âVery funny. Thatâs why I have you guys here though, help me pick someone.â You really did want some help on this part. If you got help picking the guy then maybe you could pick someone who it would be easy to let go of.
âHow so?â Ronnie tilted her head at your request.
âWell knowing my luck I would accidentally pick a guy who is totally perfect for me and I really wonât be able to go through with it. If you guys pick then you could objectively find someone who is someone I would never go for.â You clap your hands together, hoping your explanation is enough.Â
âOh Iâm so in.â Jin rests his chin on his hands. âPlus this bar is packed, we could easily find someone tonight.â
âWell we wonât find him sitting here. Letâs go fish.â Ronnie stands from her seat offering a hand to you, Jin following close behind. The three of you taking a turn about the bar, making observations at some of the different groups that were here.Â
âLetâs see.â Ronnie taps her lips with her pointer finger and glances about the room as the three of you search from person to person. âOkay, guy at the bar. Sweater, cheesy and obviously cheap silver necklace.â
You and Jin both take a glance over to him, he seemed to be here alone. Looked nice enough, maybe a good choice. He seemed like a jock type, looked like he was trying with his looks a little too hard. You were considering it before Jin shook his head.Â
âNot him, hes rubbed his ring finger like four times.â Jin points, just at that moment the guy does it again, âHeâs either married or just got divorced and looking for another wife. Next!âÂ
âTouche.â You agree and the three of you glance around again. âOkay, how about that guy?â
You point to a small group of guys who seemed way deep into a game of pool. One of the guys sinks a cool shot into one of the pockets and he and another guy cheer too loudly, you were far away and you could still hear them. He looked like he was about to break his pool stick from excitement.Â
âNevermind. Way too intense.â It would have been a good choice but you would probably end up dumping him before you could get any work done.Â
The three of you run through a few more guys as you walk around, all three of you seemed to find some reason to veto them again and again. Some were too close to your type and some were just too annoying for you to be able to stand them long enough to keep this ruse up.Â
âGod slim pickings tonight.â You were getting exhausted. You were considering heading back to Namjoon at the table and coneiding for the night. Maybe sleep it off and try again at another bar tomorrow.Â
âWe can do this.â Ronnie cheers trying to keep your spirits high. âThis guy is here, I just know it.â She had had more to drink at this point, she's a pretty energetic drunk.Â
âI agree. No throwing in the towel yet.â Jin scans the room again, you guys had moved to many different spots and more people had moved in and out of the bar at this point.Â
Jin looked around from guy to guy. Jin frequented this bar often so he had a general sense of the people who were new and the people who frequented here often. He wasnât sure himself who would work for this, they had to be the perfect combination of nice enough to stick it out but still a playboy or asshole enough that you wouldnât fall for them. Someone who maybe deserved a little bit of torture. Someone who needed a little due karma.Â
He waited for a moment, maybe all three of you just needed to let the guy reveal himself. Before Jin thought it was hopeless was just when he got exactly what he asked for.Â
Jungkook was making his way over to the bar.
âBingo.â Jin whispered. Jungkook had left the table with his friends, the booth was tucked away in the corner so it was no wonder he didn't notice them before. âThatâs the guy.âÂ
âWho?â You ask and then Jin points his finger, tracking Jungkook to the end of the bar. You watched him order from the bartender and then casually wait for a moment.Â
âHeâs perfect.â Jin was confident.Â
âHeâs cute?â Ronnie nods, Jin rolling his eyes at her. âWhat am I wrong?âÂ
He was very cute you thought, he sported this leather jacket and dark jean look. Large boots, it wasnât your usually clean cut look that you enjoyed but you understood the appeal of it.Â
âOkay why him?â You ask looking at Jin.Â
âIâve seen him here a lot. Always comes with a group of friends, but he never leaves alone. Never the same girl twice. I thought he stopped coming around, but nope. Looks like heâs still at it. His nameâs something like Jungkook.â Jin places both hands on your shoulders, looking you dead in the eye. âTotal Casanova. Leaves behind a trail of broken hearts.â
Ronnie raises an eyebrow. âWouldnât that make it harder to keep him around for thirty days?âÂ
âNot necessarily,â you say, the wheels turning in your head. âI just need him to dump me within thirty days. He doesnât have to stick around for all thirty.â
âLongest I saw him entertain a girl for was maybe two weeks? Thatâs exactly what you need.â Jin shakes your shoulders and you laugh at the movement, almost dizzy after your two drinks.Â
A playboy type who canât commit for more than two weeks. It was exactly what you needed, and lucky for you you wouldnât need to feel bad about maybe annoying him too much. You needed him to dump you no matter what. Could be fun after all, messing with a guy who is a fuckboy that Jin has seen around could be almost a perfect karma for this guy.Â
âPerfect.â You say with a sly smile as you watch him walk back to his group balancing a few drinks in his arms along the way.Â
Jungkook managed to set the drinks down gently, âHere you go boys.â
He passed the drinks outs but Jimin and Taehyung were deliberating about something. Jungkook looked between them and looked to Hobi for confirmation. Hoseok wasnât totally sure what their hushed conversation was about.Â
âI donât know, seems like he could make that work too well.â Jungkook could barely make out the sentence coming from Tae.Â
âNo it has to be someone like that.â Jimin adds on and then they both seem to come to some silent agreement. Both sitting up straight in their spots.Â
âWhat are you two whispering about?â Jungkook breaks the silence and they both have big grins on their faces, Taehyung is looking over the back of the booth to the bar.Â
âOkay we have made a decision.â Jimin puts on an announcer voice, holding his glass like a microphone.
âYou picked someone? Already?â Jungkook was surprised they had come to an agreement on this so quickly.Â
Taehyung looks back to Jungkook and nods, âOver there, short maroon dress. Waiting at the bar. Has a tall guy and another girl, dark hair and black dress with her.â Taehyung points and Jungkook looks.Â
It takes him a moment, but then he spots you, mid-laugh about something with your friends. A small smile tugs at his lipsâyou were undeniably cute. Thereâs something polished about the way youâve styled yourself, striking a balance between playful and sophisticated. To Jungkook, though, you scream commitment. Your look isnât meant to turn heads; itâs just confident. Itâs a stark contrast to the more overtly flirty, bold style he usually goes for. That makes him curiousâwhy would Jimin and Taehyung pick someone who seems so... relationship-minded?
âHer really?â He looked back at both of them. âDo you want to just hand me the three hundred dollars now?â
âI know you think it will be easy, but that is the type of girl who wants marriage. I think her need for a commitment is going to send you running.â Jimin rubs his hands together evilly.Â
Jungkook looks back to you again, thinking. Jungkook felt like he could very well be committed, he could do it probably better than most people. He just hasnât wanted to or hasnât had the time too.
âI will be Mr. Marriage Material from here on out.â Jungkook downs the rest of his beer, âBe ready to put your money where your mouth is.âÂ
Jungkook stands up and leaves the table, they watch him go to work. Taehyung was now nervous and Hoseok was not even sure what he was watching anymore. Also confused by Jimin's choice.Â
âOkay, I gotta say he has a point.â Hoseok leans back to Jimin.Â
âYeah now Iâm kind of nervous.â Taehyung rubbed his neck, watching Jungkook who was waiting for an opportunity to maybe get a chance encounter with you. The two friends hovering around you werenât making it easy.Â
âTrust me. Iâve seen that girl here before.â Jimin smiles.Â
âDo you know her?â Hoseok raised an eyebrow to him, now even more curious.Â
âNot at all, but I tried hitting on her once. Very sweet, turned me down though. Seriously, the moment I walked up she read me like an open book.â This was earlier this year and Jimin didnât care, he had some personal things going on and did it on a whim. You immediately saw through his tactics and called him out on it.Â
âWhat did she do?â Taehyung became nervous.Â
âI tried hitting her with a line, and she just looked at me and laughed. Honestly, I mightâve been offended if she hadnât been so sweet about it. She even apologized! Said she could tell I wasnât serious. Sent me on my way before I could even react. I swear, I was a little dizzy afterward.â
âOh wow.â Hoseok is putting the pieces together now. âOkay, I see, so she is going to see through Jungkook right away.â
âExactly,â Jimin raises his glass, âIf he gives off even a whiff of insincerity. She wonât give him the time of day. She very clearly wants someone who is into the long term relationship game and Jungkook⌠never will be.â
âSo youâre not concerned, not even a little bit?â Taehyung asks one more time.Â
âNot even slightly.â Jimin clinked his glass against Taehyungs.
âSo how is this going to work?â Ronnie looks between you and Jin.
âIâm not sure. What else do you know about him?â You look to Jin for advice on this. You came here sometimes but you werenât as much of a frequent flier as Jin.Â
âHmm, unfortunately I usually see him hit on girls who are more⌠obviously here for something casual.â He gestures towards another girl at the bar, she was dressed very differently than you were. More revealing, nothing wrong with that but it was starkly different to your look.Â
âSo maybe it's a lost cause?â You frown.
âAbsolutely not.â Ronnie protested waving her hand back and forth.
âJust means you might have to be the bold one. Instead of him coming to you, you go after him.â Jin nodded and rubbed his chin.Â
You stifled a laugh, âYeah right.â Not like you couldnât approach someone but it was still nerve racking. âI canât do that.âÂ
âItâll be so easy. Looks heâs already coming over to the bar.â Ronnie nodded her head in his direction very subtly. You take a look from the corner of your eye and it was true. You turned your head pretending to see something else but catching a glance at him standing at the end of the bar, waiting.Â
Jungkook sees you look his direction and pretends to be occupied with something else.
âOkay well if this is going to work, shew.â You wave your hands for the both of them to head back to the table, you take an empty spot in front of the bar.Â
âDo you really think she can go up to him?â Ronnie nudged Jin, both of them push their way back to the table where Namjoon had been waiting.Â
âDefinitely. Well⌠normally Iâd say no but sheâs so determined I think she can pull it off.â Jin looks back at you ordering another drink.Â
Once they both make it back to the table Namjoon takes notice, âDid she find someone?âÂ
âYes, heâs so cute.â Ronnie gushes.Â
âToo bad she has to get rid of him.â Jin shrugs as they all take their places and watch you from afar.Â
âI know.â Ronnie sighs.
âSo whatâs the plan?â Namjoon raises an eyebrow.Â
âSheâs working up the courage to go up to him. Iâve seen the guy around before and heâs not really into her type. So she has to be bold.â Jin explains again, he looks over to Jungkook.Â
Jin takes notice that Jungkook has already noticed you. He finds it odd for a moment before he sees Jungkook start to move.Â
âUnlessâŚâ Jin starts.Â
âOh looks like heâs making a move.â Hoseok gestures over to Jungkook. He pushes himself off the end of the bar to start moving to you but gets cut off by a group moving close to the bar.Â
âLet the games begin.â Jimin raises his glass. âWe might make our money tonight.âÂ
âCross our fingers.â Taehyung chuckles and takes a sip of his drink.Â
âIf he doesnât blow smoke out of his ass you guys might be in for a long month.â Hoseok tilts his head watching Jungkook try to maneuver his way over to you. You were just barely getting a drink from the bartender.Â
From their end of the bar, your friends could see it happening in real timeâJungkook making his way toward you, not without some difficulty from the proximity of other people. They couldnât help but laugh at his struggle.Â
âGod, heâs like a moth to a flame,â Jin chuckled, crossing his arms. âPoor guy doesnât even know what's going to happen.â
âDoubt it,â Ronnie added, leaning forward. âY/Nâs got this in the bag. He wonât know what hit him.â
Meanwhile, you werenât so convinced that Jungkook was actually coming for you. After all, the girl beside you fit the typical type he seemed to gravitate towardâflirty, dressed to kill, and definitely giving him the look. Still, you had a plan brewing in your mind. If he wasnât going to make the first move, youâd force his hand.
With a slight pivot on your heel right as he came up, you forced your shoulder into his chest. Just enough to stumble.
âOh my god.â You gasp, steadying your drink that had split on your hand, âIâm so sorry. I didnât spill on you did I?âÂ
Jungkookâs initial reaction was a mix of surprise and awkward laughter. âHey, no problem,â he said, chuckling. âJust missed the splash zone.â
âI swear I have two left feet these days.â You tuck some of your hair behind your ear. Faking your embarrassment, setting your drink down and getting a napkin.
âWell itâs a good thing I have two right feet.â Jungkook easing the tension and you laugh under your breath.Â
âYou always this quick on your feet?â You tilted your head, offering him your handâthe one free of any cocktail spillage. âIâm Y/N.â
âJungkook.â He took your hand with a grin, his gaze flickering over you like he was sizing up a challenge. He didnât let go right away.
Now that he was closer, you could really take him in. He was infuriatingly attractiveâthe type youâd usually avoid for your own good. The type who knew he had an edge and knew how to use it.Â
Now that Jungkook could get a closer look at you, he just thought that you were pretty. Pretty hair, eyes, lips. All of you was just pretty and sweet. Could see that pink glowing heart of yours on your sleeve.Â
âWhat brings you here?â He leaned an arm against the bar, his stance casual yet deliberate, like he was marking his territory. His gaze pinned you down, leaving you no room to escape.
âJust out with friends, a celebration of sorts.â You turn and point to them, the three of them suddenly acting like their drinks were so interesting to look at.Â
âWhatâs the occasion?â He didnât even glance at them; his focus was still fully on you. The intense eye contact actually makes you nervous.
âMy promotion,â Smiling like it was the full truth. Or rather, the promotion standing right in front of you.
He nodded, flashing a grin. âCongrats. Big deal?â
âVery big.â You rested your hand on the bar near his, just brushing the surface between you. âWhat about you? Out celebrating something too?â
âJust out with friends.â Jungkook gestured back to his own group at the other end of the bar. You followed his gaze, recognizing one of the guys, though you couldnât place from where.
âI should let you get back to them.â you teased lightly, leaning ever so slightly away from him.
He tilted his head with a grin, clearly not interested in letting you go that easily. âWhy rush? I wasnât planning to be gone long, but then I got the wind knocked out of me.â
You smirked, feeling the heat of his gaze on you as you playfully patted your shoulder. âJust practicing for my football career.â
âNot a football fan but Iâd watch those games.â Jungkook was going to make some form of physical contact, which is what he would have done by now but he held back. He could tell thatâs not something you would appreciate.âLet me buy you another one. Since you lost half of the that one because of me.â
âThatâs very sweet.â You wanted to test the limits you had with him here, would he chase you? âBut I should get back. My friends may think I ran off.âÂ
âSo soon?â He tilted his head at your sudden retreat.Â
âYou seem nice,â You start and lean close, âI think Iâm just looking for something⌠more serious.âÂ
âWho's to say Iâm not serious?â He gives you a puzzled expression. Jungkook had done so good with women lately that it felt strange to see such a sudden retraction.
You tilted your head, a teasing smile playing at your lips. âIâve seen you around. I know your type.â
A lie. Considering you hadnât seen him before tonight, you wanted to see if he would bite.
âSo youâve noticed me?â He stuck his tongue into the side of his cheek.Â
âIâm just saying I know your type.â
âWhat if I am serious? Youâd be running away before you could find out.â He flirted, a boyish grin on his face that dripped confidence. He was actually nervous, and the three hundred dollar bill hanging over his head was adding some pressure.
You giggled, leaning back slightly as you took a slow sip of your drink, eyes locked on his over the rim. âYou donât strike me to be serious about much of anything.â
His gaze flicked to your lips before returning to your eyes, his voice softer now, âWhat if I want to prove you wrong?â
You raised an eyebrow. âProve me wrong? You barely know me.â
He smirked, stepping a little closer, just enough to make the air between you crackle with tension. âIsnât that half the fun? Getting to know someone new?â
âWhat makes you think I want to get to know you?â
âCall it intuition.â
Any other time, a guy like this coming up to you would have meant an immediate shut down from you. They were never serious, and they only ever wanted to hook up and never speak again. Tonight though Jungkook needed to be the bug caught in your web.
You pretended to mull it over, tapping the rim of your glass with your finger. âHmm... cute line.â
âNot a line,â he shot back, more serious now. âBut seriously, let me buy you a new drink?â
You were about to decline, but his eyes held yours, that quiet confidence making you hesitate just a second too long.
âFine,â you said, sighing like you were giving in, but the small smirk tugging at your lips told him otherwise. âBut youâre still going to have to work for it.â
âI plan to.â Jungkook leaned in just a fraction, his voice dropping. âLet me get your number. Iâll take you out, show you what I mean by serious.âÂ
You fake contemplation and act like you really needed time to think about it, sucker. You tap the rim of your glass for a moment before you reach your free hand out to him, gesturing for his phone. Jungkook takes the silent victory and pulls his phone out, opening it for you. With a few quick taps and your contact information solidified in his phone.
The deed had been done.
âDonât disappoint me,â you said, handing it back, your tone playful but carrying an edge of warning.
âWouldnât dream of it,â he replied, his eyes never leaving yours.
âHave a goodnight Jungkook.â Turning on your heel leaving him there and just letting him watch you go. You b-line straight back to your table.
Jungkook was feeling good and felt like this was going to be a breeze of a month. He had to make sure that first date went well first. He would put on his best boyfriend face forward, itâs not that he couldnât do it like everyone thought. Itâs just been a long time since he last had the chance too.Â
He made his way back over to his own table, he put on a fake sad face as he took his seat back next to Taehyung.Â
âStrike out did you?â Hoseok patted him on the shoulder in comfort.Â
âYeah⌠struck off the first day of the month.â Jungkook raised his phone, revealing your phone number. Jungkook, a smug grin on his face.Â
âIâm surprised.â Jimin sat in quiet contemplation, âBut it wonât last.âÂ
âSheâs cute. You guys should have picked more carefully.â Jungkook sighed, looking back into the bar in the direction of your friends and your table. Your back was to him so he couldnât catch a glimpse of you.Â
He then remembered he still owed you a drink.
Across the bar you settled back in with your friends.Â
âI caught the whale boys.â You take a small bow and small cheers round around the table.Â
âCongratulations.â Namjoon cheers you, hitting his glass with yours.Â
Your friends leaned in, eager for the play-by-play of your encounter. You gave them the rundown. Ronnie, the first to break the silence, grinned and raised his glass in admiration.
âThat was smooth, Y/N. You had him wrapped around your finger.â
You chuckled, taking a slow sip of your drink. âItâs even better that he thinks heâs in control. There's no way he was actually serious but a fun flirt.â
Jin shook his head, a mixture of amusement and awe on his face. âYouâre scary when youâre confident. Iâm glad Iâm on your side.â
âSo whatâs the next step in this little experiment of yours?â Ronnie asked, clearly invested in the unfolding drama.
âWell,â you began, swirling your drink in thought, âI wait for him to reach out. Then Iâll play it cool on the first date, get him comfortable.â
âWhy play it cool?â Namjoon asked, eyebrows raised.
âBecause,â you smirked, âif Iâm too much, too fast, heâll bolt. But if I ease him in, Iâll have time to start slowly being weird.â
Just then, a waitress appeared, sliding a pretty pink drink in front of you. âThis oneâs from the guy across the bar,â she said, nodding toward Jungkook, who was leaning against the counter, already watching you. âHe said youâd know him.â
You couldnât help but smile at the boldness. Lifting the glass slightly, you gave him a small, acknowledging wave, your friends immediately picking up on the gesture.
âWhatâs it called?â you asked, eyes still locked on Jungkook.
The waitress grinned. âItâs a Cosmic Encounter.â
âHow pretty.â you muttered, a playful smirk forming. You brought the glass to your lips, not breaking eye contact with Jungkook as you took a sip. The sweetness of the drink contrasted sharply with the building tension between the two of you.
If the circumstances were different you may let yourself swoon at the gesture. Picking a cute drink for you. You may try to see if you really could get him to be serious. This was not that though, this was all business and you would have to continue to remind yourself.
Ronnie was the first to speak up again, a wide grin spreading across his face. âIâll admit, heâs got moves.â
âJust donât forget this is what he does.â Jin knowing how you are, felt the reminder needed to be put out there. That this is all temporary.
Just as you were about to continue, your phone buzzed softly in your hand. A text. Your eyes drifted down to the screen, and sure enough, it was Jungkook.
Jungkook: Hope you like it⌠when are you free next?
You couldnât help the smirk that spread across your lips. âSpeak of the devil.â
Namjoon leaned over. âAlready? He really wasted no time.â
âFaster than I thought,â you admitted, typing a quick reply.Â
:Weâll see, Jungkook. Maybe Iâm busy.
The thrill of the chase was intoxicating, and as you sent the message, you could feel the game picking up speed. Both of you were circling each other, waiting for the right moment to strike.
You had no doubt, you were going to eat Jungkook alive.

About Sims 4 Mod Manager
It came to my attention a few days ago that a popular program used for sorting custom content, Sims 4 Mod Manager, is based on Overwolf software. The issue with this is that ad placements on Overwolf programs give a 20-30% cut to Overwolf directly. As stated on their website. I know it is an Overwolf program because you can find Overwolf files within it:
Personally, I do not mind un-obstructive ads on free programs as long as they are vetted by the developer, but I do not want to give Overwolf any money. So I will be kindly contacting the developer via the contacts on his website and ask he divest and use a different avenue with the ads. Maybe moving to github instead. He is also recently released a curseforge integrated app.
If you are to request the divestment, please please do so with respect as to invite people INTO the conversation and not put them in a defensive position. No one likes to listen when they are being threatened or harassed. đ¤ˇââď¸
I know many will be disappointed with this news as it is a great, one of a kind program, so I wanted to offer some alternative methods besides manually sorting custom content:
Sims 4 Mod Assistant: A small app used to find duplicates and mod conflicts. Also supports filtering and moving files to other folders. Available on Mod the Sims and Github.
S4Pavir: It's not that pretty, but it can be used to view, remove, and sort cc. Available on Github.
You can also use sims tray importer to sort through cc. Dress your sims in all the cc you want to remove or place build/buy items on a lot. Save the sim/lot to your library and use Sims 4 tray importer to view the list of cc used, and open its file location to delete. Available on Luniversims (.fr)
Sims 4 Studio can also be used to view, edit, and delete cc. Available here.
Let me know of any other methods you know or notify me if there are any issues with these two programs.
Hopefully there is a positive outcome with reaching out to the creator. Please be respectful and you can use my pinned post as a reference for why curseforge is a problem. đ
Edit:
Update on Sims 4 Mod Manager
After going through the older versions of Sims 4 mod manager I have found out that Version 1.0.9 Beta (Windows 10, 11 for me) does not have Curseforge ads. I think this is suitable option to use the mod manager without giving direct ad revenue to Overwolf/Curseforge.
When you go to the Sims 4 Mod Manager site, click other versions and scroll until you find this version. It does not have all the current features, but it works. You can uninstall your current version by searching the app in your start menu (Windows), right click and select 'uninstall', and click 'uninstall' again once you find it in the list that comes up.
(I do not have Mac, so I do not know if the later version 1.1.3 Beta, will also not have ads. If you download it please let me know.) I will update my original S4MM post with this info and also put it in a reblog so hopefully everyone can see this.)
It doesn't have the sort to subfolders option, but my way around that is to sort cc into a "moving folder" and then open your regular file explorer and cut and paste those items to your sub-folder manually. Easy peasy!

Fire in the Forest
Adam sighed deeply as he unlocked the door to his apartment. The familiar scent of old laundry and takeout boxes washed over him as the door swung open. He slid his bag off his shoulder onto the floor and slumped onto the couch. Today had been one of the worst days of his life, to put it mildly. The company heâd slaved away for since graduating a few years ago had unexpectedly let him go as part of cost cutting measures. Every late night heâd spent at the office suddenly hit him as a waste, his hard work had never mattered to those up top. Adding insult to injury was his paltry severance package; with his rent itâd barely last two weeks. He wouldnât even have time to breathe before having to find a new job.
Before he knew it heâd passed out sitting on the couch, waking up hours later to a dark sky out the window. Shit, he muttered to himself, rubbing his eyes before forcing his body up and off the couch. He tossed a frozen meal into the microwave before setting his laptop up on the table. With the microwave humming in the background he started visiting websites of companies he knew of in the same sphere. Career page after career page yielded no luck. He grabbed his food from the beeping microwave and continued to solemnly scroll through page after page of indeed listings, applying to every one he could convince himself he was qualified for. Soon enough it was two in the morning, and Adam decided to call it quits. He cleaned up his now very cold dinner and went to the bathroom to splash some water on his face and clean up for bed. His red hair glowed under the ceiling light, looking almost like fire. It was one of his more attractive qualities, he thought to himself, looking at his skinny frame and ghostly skin. He flipped off the lights and hopped into bed.
It was around ten the next morning that Adam finally crawled out of bed. He grabbed his phone off the desk and quickly checked for any job notifications. There was only one, and not one he recognized. It was a recruitment email from a logging company, Cascade Lumber. He skimmed over the email, theyâd âfoundâ his profile online and thought heâd be a good fit for a lumberjack role? That was ridiculous, he thought, and closed out of his email. Frustrated at no actual leads, he decided to take a walk for the morning and get back to searching that afternoon. While out trying to enjoy the rare sunny day, that email stuck in his mind. Really? A lumberjack? It was absurd, insulting almost. He was a software developer, not some country laborer. He got back to his apartment and threw himself back into the search, sending out applications one after another. The next day was much of the same, desperately trying to find more niche positions that might be hiring. Still no responses, though. Each day he became a little more stressed, a little more frantic in his search. How had no one responded yet? He had plenty of qualifications and experience, he didnât understand the problem.
Two weeks had passed and Adam was against a wall. His severance cash was nearly dried up, and still nothing had come through, not even an interview. Even his connections had fallen through. With the bills starting to pile up on the counter, he was out of options. That was when he remembered the email from weeks before. At this point it couldnât hurt to respond, maybe they had a tech position he could weasel into. He wrote a short response and sent it off. Just minutes later, as Adam was in the middle of making lunch, his phone buzzed. Theyâd responded already, inviting him out to their office. The address was nearly an hour out west, but what choice did he have?
The next morning he was on his way out of the city, high rises giving way to fields and then forest. Dense groves alternated with barren patches of recently logged areas, letting sunlight down to the road. He pulled down a narrow road and a few minutes later parked in front of a modest building tucked into the trees. His car was surrounded by huge trucks filled to the brim with tree trunks, as well as some large machinery he couldnât identify. Upon walking inside he was greeted with a dim room full of old logging gear. He heard the footsteps of someone large approaching, before a huge man descended the stairs to greet him. He looked enormous in this small room, almost scraping the ceiling, and his frame was equally wide. His open shirt revealed a forest of hair on his chest, and his beard was incredibly thick. Adam suddenly felt very intimidated, despite the large smile on the manâs face.
âHey there! You must be Adam, so glad you took us up on visiting. We really think youâd be a great asset on the team. Whoa! Iâm getting ahead of myself, the nameâs Derek,â he reached out his absolute paw of a hand. With a shake Derek immediately began touring Adam around the office. Derek was overwhelming with his enthusiasm, but also in his assumption that Adam had agreed to start working there. He didnât have another option, but they didnât know that. They got into Derekâs truck and he drove off into the forest towards a work site. The majority of the information Derek was spitting out went in one ear and out the other, but Adam tried to look as engaged as he could. The truck came to a screeching halt in an area they were currently clearing. The sound of chainsaws was like nails on a chalkboard to Adam as they stepped out of the truck. In the distance he saw machinery whirring away cutting trees, as well as men harnessed up with saws. Derek went into more detail about working in an active logging site, the dangers and safety measures. Adam was instead busy looking at the men working nearby. They had on hard hats and bright orange vests overtop thick jackets or flannels. They all looked big and burly, like theyâd been lifting for years. Adam wasnât sure how in Derekâs mind he would be able to do anything here.
â...and I think that just about covers most of it. Oh! And the salary is $55k per year, with annual raises and benefits. We try to do right by our guys here,â Derek smiled at Adam. That number had finally gotten his attention. Nothing close to his old job, but better than zero. In a decision that probably warranted some more thought, Adam opened his mouth.
âGreat, when do I start?â
Derekâs smile doubled in size and he slapped Adam on the back. âThatâs my man, letâs get you all set up then while youâre out here,â he said. They both got back into Derekâs truck and drove back to the office. Inside Adam was handed the same hat and vest he saw the men at the site wearing.
âNow thatâs just the basics, youâll probably want some heavy clothing while on the job, and get yourself some good boots while youâre at it,â he chuckled, looking down at Adamâs aging vans shoes. Adam thanked him and walked back to his car. Still unsure of this whole venture, Adam departed. On the way back he stopped at some workwear stores, looking for boots and clothes to fit the job. Having no idea what he actually needed, he just looked for the closest things to what he remembered the guys there wearing. Close enough, right?
Back at his apartment he cautiously tried on all the clothing heâd just gotten. To his surprise, it all fit fairly well, despite his body being much smaller than most of the guys out there. His thin frame looked bulkier under a thick layer of protective and warm clothing. He almost⌠liked how it looked? Adam quickly put that thought out of his head and stripped off the gear. The sun was already dipping below the horizon and he had to be out there early in the morning from now on.Â
The alarm came even sooner than he thought. Adam rolled out of bed at four in the morning, and was out the door as soon as he could get himself together. The air was chilly outside, with not even a hint of the sunrise yet in the darkness. He drove straight to the site Derek had assigned him to, finding a group of men chatting together while donning their equipment. Adam introduced himself, and began putting on his own assigned gear. The day flew by as several other guys instructed Adam on how things worked. He was more keen to pay attention to everything this time, listening intently to each burly man who showed him how to use a chainsaw. By the end of the day heâd felled a few trees and learned the basics of the larger machinery the team used. Despite it being cool all day, Adam was sweating up a storm in his thick coat. Maybe heâd overestimated how much layering was needed. The drive home felt shorter than it had the day before, but Adam was frustrated at a recurring itch on his jaw, it just kept coming back no matter how much he scratched at it.
The next few days were much of the same, Adamâs time was highly supervised while he was learning, but he was surprised at how easily he took to it. His original plan of finding a tech position to switch to had already been forgotten. The other lumberjacks seemed to like Adam as well, despite his scrawny stature. His red hair made him easy to point out, even though it was usually covered by a hard hat. The itch on his face reared its head a few more times, as Adamâs baby smooth face was slowly overtaken by a light red stubble. Each day it would poke out just a hair more, reaching out from his chin towards his sideburns. Adam failed to notice this, just as he was blind to the muscle his skinny body had started to put on. In just a week heâd gained serious definition, he had slight pecs and shoulders, and his arms looked like heâd been working out for years. Must be the intensity of the job, he thought to himself when one of his old t-shirts no longer fit. As the days passed, his stubble connected across his face, and some wispy hairs poked out of his growing pecs. Barely noticeable, but there nonetheless.
The weeks continued to pass as Adam got settled into his position. He started to feel like a real lumberjack as trees fell by his hand day by day. He began to fit in more with the other men as well. His bright red stubble thickened. Hairs that were barely more than peach fuzz grew thick and pushed out into a true short beard. The wisps on his chest likewise grew thicker, curlier, as more pressed out of his pecs. The red hairs grew and wove together until the hairy coating could no longer be ignored. His chest hair was normally kept beneath multiple layers, until one of his fellow loggers spotted the rug while he was changing. The crew gave him their old flannels and forced him to wear them and let some of the fiery red hair poke out. They all loved it, he was looking like them with their thick beards and hairy chests. The tiny new hire was quickly vanishing beneath muscle and fur, as the hairs on his chest spread downwards over his tight stomach.
Adam began noticing that each day he would leave work absolutely soaked in sweat. His layers just absorbed it leaving him a sopping mess as the job was so labor intensive. It didnât bother him, he just bought more work clothes to cycle through, but he was oblivious to the other effects it was having. Adamâs body, steeping in sweat all day, was producing more and more. Not only that, his previously bare pits began sprouting fine red hairs. At first it was just a few thin hairs poking out, but as they were soaked in sweat they grew thicker. More hairs popped out of the damp pit, filling in rapidly. His once smooth pits were growing into a dense jungle of hair, the hairs thick and red, tangling together into a tuft that trapped even more sweat and stench. They spread out of the confines of his pit, connecting with the pelt on his chest and beginning to pop out across his upper arms. He would dig his fingers into his furry pits to scratch, the hair growing in itching like mad. Each day more hairs pushed out, more sweat was trapped, and the more he smelled like the other men around him.
As the weeks rolled on, Adam kept having to buy new clothes between sweat stains and simply outgrowing them. His body had put on a lot of size since starting, his thin frame bulking out as he grew taller and wider. The weather was growing colder, and the added layers were hiding his growing size, as well as his growing fur. The hair from his pits was continuing its march, with wiry hair cropping up across his shoulders, triceps, and was especially dense on his forearms. Red wispy hairs sprouted all over his upper body, filling in gaps and growing into a thick ginger rug. His body was growing at a rapid rate, biceps filling out and pecs becoming real pillows, but it wasnât all muscle. His size was softened by a healthy layer of fat that only encouraged more hair to sprout. His already dense chest hair thickened further, red hairs swirling around his nipples and growing longer and curlier. The chest fur grew up and over his shoulders, creating a seamless carpet from his hands through his torso. Even his back was beginning to show signs, as light red fuzz was gathering around his shoulder blades and above his waistline. Hair sprouted out of his shirt collars and poked from his sleeves; even under his layers of clothes his coworkers knew Adam was hiding some impressive fur.
What they couldnât see was below Adamâs waistline. The fur coat from his stomach slowly inched downwards, the wispy hairs occupying his groin quickly overrun with a thick red bush. The hairs pushed out from the base of his cock, thick and curly they sprouted and tangled together as the bush expanded. The hairs climbed up and connected with the rug on his stomach, and out to his thighs before racing down his thick legs. His pubes grew denser into a thick triangle of red hair, his cock growing larger to not be hidden beneath the jungle. Adam hardly noticed as the bulge in his jeans grew day by day, sweat soaking the area as it developed a thick musk that was barely contained by his underwear. He had to buy larger sizes after his balls swelled considerably, dropping lower than before and sprouting with their own rug of red hair. The hairs spread down over his taint before blossoming in his ass crack, a thick fiery explosion of fur pushing out as the hairs grew like weeds over his large cheeks. His legs grew stockier to support his growing body as the hairs continued their march from the thick nest of pubes. His thighs were coated before it spread to his calves. His feet stretched and ached as they grew multiple sizes in just a few weeks, before too being buried beneath a thick mat of red hair.
Winter finally began showing its ugly face, and Adamâs job grew rougher daily as temperatures plummeted up in the mountains. His body adapted, packing on considerable bulk. Gone was his thin, twinky frame, replaced now by a thick and strong body, built for strength and warmth. His thick muscular frame was coated in a layer of fat to insulate him, and his belly seemed to just keep growing. The fur coat heâd been developing only continued to come in. The red hairs grew thicker and denser every day, pushing against his clothing. His fiery red beard, which had been well kept until now began erupting from his face with a fury. Thick hairs curled over his upper lip as the hairs on his cheeks pushed out inch after inch. More hairs filled in between as the coating crawled higher on his cheeks. It surged down his neck and blended with the thick chest hair. He looked wild, but it kept his face warm from the frigid winds. He even got complimented on it, earning a reputation as a real mountain man from his fellow lumberjacks. Adam had fully adapted to his job, there was no going back. He was now a hairy, hefty lumberjack with a fur coat to rival an animalâs. Heâd grown to be one of the best in the crew, each tree felled returning as a hair in his pelt.

Article: Recruiters Drop Elbit Systems after Palestine Action Campaign
After weeks of action, the sole recruiters for the British operations of Israelâs largest weapons company, Elbit Systems, have confirmed via email to Palestine Action that they ended their association with Elbit on the evening of the 29th November. For two months, activists in the Palestine Action network had disrupted iO Associates at their premises across the country, to impede their ability to recruit roles for Israelâs war machine.Â
iO Associates recruited the likes of engineers, software developers, and finance staff for positions across the sites of the British branch of Israelâs largest weapons company, Elbit Systems. Elbit are the largest supplier to the occupation military, providing the vast majorities of its drones, munitions, surveillance gear, and parts for its tanks, jets, and precision missiles. From Britain specifically, they manufacture parts for Israelâs killer drones, along with weapons sights, tank parts, and more, exporting these technologies to Israel in great volume yearly. This is the nature of the business that IO was Associates with, and were IO Associates biggest client.
In response to their facilitation of Elbitâs criminal activities, iOâs offices were stormed and occupied in Manchester on the 1st September, and again on the 7th October. Activists painted iO offices red on October 9th in London, Reading, and Manchester. They were forced to vacate their Manchester offices from the 11th October, after the premises were also stormed by the Youth Front For Palestine, and then finally targeted in Edinburgh twice, on the 11th and 17th October. After being forced to vacate their offices, having their online presence tarnished, and (as confirmed to us by former employees) losing their staff who resigned in opposition to their arms trade partnership, iO Associates have finally cut ties with Israelâs weapons trade.Â
This is part of an expansive strategy by Palestine Action, by disrupting the suppliers and facilitators of Elbitâs presence in Britain. It has seen Elbitâs accountants (Edwards), haulage providers (Kuehne + Nagel), landlords (JLL) and many other complicit companies targeted, alongside the hundreds of actions at Elbit sites themselves, continuing to resist the presence of Elbit warmongers in Britain, and constantly reminding those associated with them that they have blood on their hands.
As a result of iO Associates dropping Elbit Systems, the recruiters have been removed as a target of Palestine Actionâs campaign. All targets who still facilitate Israelâs weapons trade are listed on elbitsites.uk

The Secret of Sherlock Holmes bookbinding project!
I've really wanted a hard copy for a while of 'The Secret of Sherlock Holmes' play by Jeremy Paul, which was performed by Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke (and is very high on my list of things to go and see if I get a time machine, because there aren't any video recordings of it.)
ANYWAY it's long out of print and very expensive to buy so I figured... I can just make one myself!
First I bound the text block. It's so slim, at a grand total of 75 pages.
I bound the cover in honey-coloured book cloth, and then set about creating a cover design.
I wanted to use the official logo of the play and this amazing publicity photo, so I went into my paint package of choice (clip studio) and tweaked the photograph until I was happy I'd got a likeness of the actors only using black and white. I think Jeremy Brett lost a little of his handsomeness, alas.
A while ago I bought a cutting machine, a Silhouette Portrait, which comes with some great software which can automatically convert an image like this into a path for the cutting machine to follow, although I usually tweak it manually too.
For example, I figured the weave on Hardwicke's tie was too intricate so I removed it.
Then I set the cutting machine to work!
For a while I tried using self-adhesive vinyl to make covers, but I found that it wasn't very hard-wearing and would start peeling off. These days I use self-adhesive vinyl to make a stencil, and then paint onto the book cloth in acrylic. The fact that the stencil is self-adhesive reduces the chances of any paint sneaking in underneath!
(The stencil is gold just because I have a lot of spare gold vinyl - it's probably not the best colour to use.)
For this project I did something I've never done before, which is doing two layered stencils, a white layer underneath, and then a black layer on top.
I kind of regret not painting all of the figures in white because if you squint you can see the line where the white stops on the final piece.
And now for the really satisfying bit - peeling of the stencil when everything has dried!
I'm really pleased with the finished book, and it's so fun to possibly have the only hardback version of this play... ever...???

Can you do Boothill with a male reader who has the abilities of Absolute Solver from murder drones
Male reader went missing after the ICP destroyed Boothill's homeland. Many years later, Boothill and the other met male reader but male reader already got possessed by the Solver
I want an angst with a happy ending story please
Absolute
Boothill | M. Reader as the Absolute Solver [Murder Drones]
----------
"The flesh demands invitation."
----------
"What are you doing all smiling like that?"
"Huh? Oh nothing."
[Name] narrowed his eyes at Boothill's words, not believing it. He says it was nothing, but his scans say otherwise. The other can't help but laugh at [Name] expression, those neon [Color] eyes that narrowed on his visor. "I was just thinking about what to get my daughter."
"I see, got any ideas yet?"
"I'm thinking..."
Without saying anything else, [Name]'s visor changes to that of a shopping list. "Well there are countless gifts you could get from across the galaxy soâ"
"Wait wait wait!"
His visor glitches and goes back to normal. [Name] looked at Boothill for a second seemingly confused. What was that about?
"I want to make it special."
"Oohh.." [Name] blurred out as he finally understands. "If you're going to handmade it. I could help if you like."
"Heh, thanks [Name]."
For as long as he knows [Name], the robot is a kind person who's happy to help those in need. He was a joy. Everyone was. Everyone on his home planet was a joy, like a small neighborhood. Everyone gets along with one another, there's rarely any conflict it's just a nice and welcoming place. Home.
Therefore [Name] didn't deserve this, none of them deserved this. It's outrageous. What did they do? What kind of sin did they commit to have on this planet. Their home. Destroyed in such a way.
As Boothill look at the surrounding fire and destruction of his home, he began to search around the area. Any place he thinks people will be at. Anywhere.
There are at least survivors right? Surely there are some people who survived this.. who saw the attack an immediately run towards a safe place.. surely..
Right..?
But nothing..
Boothill find nothing but ashes and ruins of once someone's home.
Everything..
..is destroyed.
Why.. why does this have to happen? He was happy. They were happy! What did they do to deserve this?
SCREW THE IPC!!
----------
"Upgrading models? cutting maintenance costs? There are many reasons the client may wish to disassemble a drone individual or a series after a period of use. Following these two simple steps is key to avoidâ"
"Incompletely disassemble drones may occasionally reboot from software death alone. More than undead federal fine hazards. Its corrupted AI carries an increased risk of future errors."
.
.
.
He stood there completely motionless. How is he supposed to react to that? After so many years...
Staying at the Express may be the best call for him. It's a free ride after all. Not to mention everyone is quite nice. Dan Heng was even willing to show him the Data Bank but...
This is one of them..? One of the information they've obtained during their travels? Don't get him wrong, it's useful, incredibly useful. But... if Boothill were to obtain such knowledge long ago..
He would have properly disassembled him.
To prevent such a fate from happening to someone he holds in high regards. If he were to do that... none of this would have happened!!
Heâit screeches as it tries to get out of its restraints. That's not him. That's not [Name]!!
This was just another planet. One where the Nameless has set their sights on. They thought it was just another Stellaron Crisis. But... this is not the work of a Stellaron.. but the work of a drone that's not been properly disassembled.
It continues to screech as the researchers expose the drone to the artificial sunlight. It screeches in pain and agony as the researchers run around, trying to put a stop to this... thing..
He can't watch this.. he can't watch this any longer.
Without saying another word Boothill leave the Cathedral to get some fresh air. He can't. He just can't watch that.. whatever they were doing to someone he cared for.
----------
"MacGuffin." The robotic voice echoes throughout an empty.. bloody.. ruined.. Cathedral.
Is this the type of thing the Nameless has to handle? Not the Absolute Solver no no... Fighting for your muddle fudgling life! Dodging an attack Boothill ready his revolver and shoot the claw-like thing.
It laughs at their attempts. It's six against one and yet they're losing how pathetic! "Thank you for the new host." It stated casually before narrowing avoiding an attach by Himeko's laser with a smirk on it's face the Solver summons it's claws once more and began it's onslaught of attacks. In a blink of an eye, all of them experience multiple near death situations left, right, and center. Fighting someone who can regenerate is cheating! They could be here for all of eternity!
Where's the cure!?
Its perpetual grin seems to widen every time any of them try to harm it which of course never worked as the Solver's regeneration rate is incredibly high. It laughs, summoning a miniature blackhole that was quickly disabled by Welt as he attack the Solver. "Have any of you find it get?" "No, we're still looking!" March replied, firing an arrow at one of it's claws while looking around for the crucifix that holds the data. The cure for the Solver. "Well I'm sorry, but fighting while searching is not easy!" Caelus cuts in, looking around the place as he ducks under the benches to avoid a stray attack. "Just focus on searching, we'll try to cover you!" Dan Heng stated firmly, using his powers as a  Vidyadhara to at least land a critical attack on the Solver.
With each attack the Solver just keep regenerating! But each time they themselves is inching closer to their own demise! Boothill took cover as he reload his bullets while looking at his surroundings for any potential threats. But something else caught his eye..
It's the crucifix!
Quickly taking it from the bloody floor, Boothill examine it for a moment, making sure it's the real deal. After a quick and swift examination, the usb connector pops out at the bottom of it. It's real alright. The cure for the Solver and the key to ending this nightmare.
"Cover for me!" He signaled before making a run for it. The Nameless did their best to keep the Solver at bay until Boothill does the finishing blow and slammed the crucifix usb model straight into the drone's visor and just like clockwork it let out a glitched robotic groan as it tries to take out the crucifix and in its efforts the cure done it's job. Motionlessly throws crucifix away the drone immediately slump to the floor.
Looking amongst themselves, the Nameless stood their ground not knowing whether the fight is over or is the Solver playing tricks on them. With caution Boothill slowly approached his old friend. Surely he's still there right? The Solver is dead. The patch worked! It has to work! Or else it....
Kneeling in front of him Boothill extended his hand. Waiting for a respond from the other. Anything! Much to their surprise the drone took the other's hand, slowly looking up, revealing it's---no, his neon [Color] eyes on his visor while the crack where they inserted the patch is slowly being healed. Yes! It worked! Letting out a dry, pained laugh Boothill gave [Name] a tight embrace. He's back. His old friend's back.

So, in the midst of... you know, everything, life at the library goes on and I wanted to talk about the difference between Libby and Hoopla.
For those not in the know, Libby and Hoopla are both apps/software that libraries can use to offer digital items to our patrons. Libby does ebooks (including graphic novels) and audiobooks.
Hoopla does ebooks, audiobooks, digital comics (weekly issues, not just trades or graphic novels), movies, TV shows, and music.
A little while back, my library system had to cut down on the number of Hoopla items patrons can check out per month. This caused a little bit of a stir - people like Hoopla! And they should! It's really cool! But the reason we had to cut back there and not with Libby was because the ways we pay for Libby and Hoopla are different.
Libby uses a pay-per-license model. This means that when we buy an ebook or audiobook on Libby, it's like we're buying one copy of a physical item. Except, because publishers are vultures, it's often much more expensive than buying one copy of the physical book - unless it's an audiobook, in which case buying the CDs might very well be more expensive than buying the digital license on Libby. That's why you might have to wait on a list for a Libby title that's really popular: we only have licenses for so many "copies". These licenses can be in perpetuity (i.e. you pay once and you can use that copy forever) or, more commonly, for a limited length of time like a year. Once that time is up, we decide whether to pay for the license for each copy again.
Hoopla uses a pay-per-circulation model. There's no waiting: once you, the patron, decide you'd like to check something out, you can do so immediately and we pay Hoopla a smaller amount of money to essentially "rent" the license from them. Cool, right?
Except that the pay-per-circ model adds up. If we have access to a brand new or popular title on Libby and Hoopla, and the Libby copy has a long waiting list, patrons might hop over to Hoopla to check it out immediately. If enough people do this, we might end up paying more overall for the Hoopla item on a per-circulation basis than we did for the license on the Libby item. That's why libraries typically limit the number of Hoopla checkouts patrons can use per month: because otherwise, we can't predict the amount we'll be paying Hoopla in the same way we can predict the amount we'll pay Libby.
Let me be clear: If a library offers a digital service and it would be helpful to you, please use it. Don't deny yourself a service you need or would enjoy in some misguided attempt to save your library some cash. We want to offer digital services, not least because ebooks and audiobooks have accessibility features that print books often don't. If your library has Libby and Hoopla and you get utility out of both, use both!
That said, if you're upset with the lower number of checkouts on Hoopla or the limited number of titles or copies available to you on Libby, you know who you should talk to? Your elected officials. Local, state, and federal. Because those folks are the ones who decide how much money we get, and what we can spend it on.
Don't go to them angry, either, because then we'll get scolded for not using the funds they "gave" us appropriately. (If you're a frequent library user, you might be shocked at how anti-library many local government officials already are.) Write your officials an email, call them, or show up at a board meeting and say you like the services the library offers, but you'd love it if we had enough money to buy more books on Libby or offer more checkouts on Hoopla. Tell them directly that this is how you would like your tax dollars to be spent.
If anybody has questions about how Hoopla or Libby work, I'm happy to answer them! Just wanted to make sure we had a baseline understanding.

How to EFFECTIVELY Use Empty Standby List to Reduce Flashing and Crashing
This tutorial is for TS2. Obviously. This is virtually the last "chapter" of advice for the Pink Flashing Survey Report (still forthcoming as a single readable thing but posted in bits and pieces over the last six months). PS it's a lonnnnnnng post. Ctrl+F "tldr" for the very short version once you open the cut.
"Part 1" of the Empty Standby List ("ESL") tutorial was already written comprehensively with screenshots by Digi at her wordpress. Following Digi's tutorial will get you set up with ESL as a routine automated background task your computer runs, typically every five minutes.
@gayars set up two instances of the routine, each running every five minutes, staggered two/three minutes apart. In other words, task 1 runs at 12:00, task 2 runs at 12:03, task 1 runs at 12:05, task 2 runs at 12:08, etc. However, I found that this negatively impacted the graphical performance of my game, notably by having the ESL task window flash over the game window, which I had never seen before, nor since reverting back to a single 5-minute task routine.
Anyway. Go do Digi's tutorial if you haven't already; I'll wait.
Background on Why this Matters
So, now your computer will be wiping the standby memory every five minutes. The thing is, this won't be able to have much impact on your game unless you wait to let it wipe before you do a major loading action.
Major loading actions are, in general order of strain (most to least strenuous):
Loading a full neighborhood.
Loading a large (3x4 or bigger) populated lot.
Loading a large unpopulated lot.
Loading actual CAS, if you have a lot of non-defaulted CC.
Loading a medium (3x3) populated lot.
Loading a medium unpopulated lot.
Loading a small (2x3 or smaller) populated lot.
Loading a small unpopulated lot.
Loading CAS catalogs from within a lot (e.g. using FFS clothing tool, "Change Appearance" on the mirror, shopping for clothes/trying on clothes on a community lot).
Turning up your lot view settings (generating other lots' lot imposters within your current lot)/panning the camera around.
You should already be doing at least all medium- and large-lot loading with the Lot View Settings Juggling Method, and âuint LotSkirtIncreaseâ removed from your userstartup.cheat - otherwise whenever you load a lot you are compounding the strain by also having the neighborhood load at the same time.
Using Resource Monitor Effectively
If you watched the Jessa Channel tutorial on flashing, she recommended downloading a third-party RAM usage monitoring software. This is unnecessary. For purposes of reducing your crashing, all you need is the native Windows program "Resource Monitor" that she also recommends.
To open it:
Click the Windows symbol/start menu.
Begin typing "Resource Monitor."
Click Resource Monitor when it shows up.
Once it is open, get to the useful information:
Click the "Memory" tab.
Make sure the "Processes" and "Physical Memory" subs are fully open, as above.
Sort by "Commit (KB)."
Each time you reopen Resource Monitor, it should restore your last view settings, so you won't have to repeat these steps.
While Resource Monitor is still open, "Pin" it to the taskbar so it will always be readily accessible.
Right-click the icon on the taskbar.
Click "Pin to taskbar."
If it says "Unpin from taskbar" you have already done this step :)
Now comes the monitoring part. You will focus on the dark-blue "Standby" block of the bar graph on Physical Memory.
Every fifth minute, when the ESL task runs, this will flash down to 0 and then pop up to about 30-75, depending on what you are doing. It will go higher faster if you are doing stuff, obviously, and hover pretty low if your computer is just sitting still. TLDR the remainder of this tutorial: only take stress actions when Standby is below 100.
As we all know too well, TS2 has a 4gb RAM limit. The problem is, TS2 seems to count the memory that is in standby, too, not just the committed/working set. Thus, before you take a major loading action (that is going to push up to 1.5gb into Standby), you need to wait for Standby to wipe so the game doesn't accidentally think it's using more memory than it is. Got it?
This is how much RAM my game is using when my neighborhood opens, pretty closely zoomed in on any particular lot. If it is zoomed out further - like a whole city block - both committed and working set are easily over 2.2gb. When I pan around the neighborhood, it continues going up. Portions of the hood that go back out of view seem to get relegated to standby, but yes, my game has crashed just from looking too much at my neighborhood from too wide an angle. Unless I slow down and let ESL run before moving on to the next section.
Six months of diligent Resource Manager monitoring has resulted in substantial reductions of crashing and flashing on my first hood view load and first lot view load. It is not 100% guaranteed, but it cuts it back to Very Playable Levels. And when I have tested the theory by purposefully not letting ESL run before a stress point, it always flashes and/or crashes within the next couple minutes.
SO! Here's what I do when I'm launching my game.
Because of overheating concerns, I always fully shut down my computer when I'm not using it for more than an hour. If I have been playing and experience a flash or crash, I will restart before trying again. @infinitesimblr, a survey Respondent who reported virtually no flashing or crashing despite a vast CC catalog, also recommends restarting between using Bodyshop or SimPE and the full game. I have found it may make a difference with Bodyshop (which I use too rarely to make a pseudoscientific claim) but that I have found basically no impact going from SimPE to the game. YMMV.
Immediately after Windows is done loading, I open Resource Monitor and wait a few minutes. Often background updates begin running and the Standby bar goes crazy - sometimes filling up the entire available RAM - and I just let it sit and do its thing. (Usually I start the computer right before my kid's bedtime so I am not actively waiting on it or anything. Go take a shower or make a sandwich or drink some water, like you did in the old days when the game itself took 20 minutes to load.)
Once the standby bar levels out and is consistently peaking no higher than about 250mb between ESL wipes, after the next ESL wipe, I will launch the game. (Usually between logging into Windowsat the beginning of storytime and checking Resource Monitor before we go do tuck-in, it is reliably hanging out below 100 unless a big TS4 or Windows update was downloading.)
Reminder: do not delete thumbnails anymore prior to launching the game. I also have turned off RPC's clear caches option and have observed faster loading times with minimal increases in crashing.
After the neighborhood selection screen comes up, wait for ESL to run again before opening your neighborhood.
If you have continue to have more than VERY sporadic hood load flashing after taking these steps, you should try launching into a subhood if you have one, then pivoting to the main hood if that's where you're playing that session after yet another ESL wipe. If that doesn't help you simply need to thin out your hood or accept the flashing. (I ended up deleting about 25% of my deco trees and 10-15 outer-lying lots that will be re-placed in a subhood.)
After the hood is loaded, navigate to the lot you want, but DO NOT actually load that lot until ESL runs yet again. Ditto for CAS - Do not select "Create New Family" until ESL has run again.
Play should be proceed as normal at this point. You probably don't need to alt-tab back to Resource Monitor again unless your sims are going traveling or you are changing play lots.
BONUS TIP #1: You can put a shortcut to the ESL routine on your desktop and push it manually (just double click the icon) if you don't feel like waiting once the game is loaded. I have had imperfect results with this vs. just waiting the five minutes, though, because the game wants to run through some stuff and flush it. But it's an option for you to experiment with.
BONUS TIP #2: If you have a really deep clothing/hair CC catalog, try to avoid using the FFS clothing tool option where you select every outfit for the sim, and their hair and makeup, at the same time. Instead, choose individual outfits by type and use the regular mirror option to change appearance (or SimBlender has it, I think, so they can do it where they already are).

âHi, Deac,â you greet as you open the door.
âHow was work?â he asks.
âIt was fine. My boss forgot to start a software update last night so we didnât have computer access until after lunch.â
âSo, you got paid to sit there and do nothing?â
âWhich isnât that much different than most days,â you tease. âWhat about you? Any crazy calls?â
You lead Deacon into your kitchen, and his smile widens when he sees dinner waiting on your counter. He pulls you into a quick hug before telling you about his day at work.
âNo injuries?â you ask softly.
âNo injuries,â he assures. âWhat about you; any paper cuts that need tending to?â
âJust mental injuries for me. Our financial statements arenât aligning like they should and if itâs not fixed by the next audit, someoneâs getting in trouble.â
âWhat do you think caused it?â
âOversight or adding the same bill twice, Iâd guess. But I think we should talk about something more exciting than my future IRS investigation.â
âThen letâs talk about that amazing dinner over there and Iâll remind you that Luca wants to have a cooking competition with you.â
Deacon has been your best friend since he moved in next door. You also harbor an ever-growing crush on him. When you saw him climb out of the moving truck the first day, you knew you wanted to be close. Heâs got a stressful job, so if you can give him a break and a friend, thatâs what youâll do.
Deacon watches the screen in the situation room as Hondo explains the corporate espionage turned weapon trafficking case. It's a strange move, going from stealing trade secrets to transporting illegal weapons across borders and into areas with strict gun control laws. Metro found a lot of evidence, but when they located the weapons supply in their prime suspectâs corporate office, they called in 20 Squad.
âWait, go back. Whoâs the suspect?â Deacon asks.
His eyes search the monitor as Hondo returns to a page of surveillance photos.
âElwin Dupree. You know him?â Hondo responds.
âNot personally, but I know someone who works for him.â
âCI?â Chris guesses.
âNo. She might be willing to help, though.â
âCall her,â Hondo says.
Hicks adds, âOtherwise, weâre going in blind. Metro has intel but itâs not enough to avoid an ambush.â
Deacon nods and walks out of the room. He presses a contact from his favorites list before raising his phone to his ear.
âRemind me why we work here?â your desk neighbor, whom you lovingly call Nola, says as she sits across from you.
âBecause the pay is good⌠and weâre desperate,â you offer, smiling as you accept your favorite drink.
âMay I remind you that Dupree is an idiot who canât even remember what he asks us to do?â
âJust smile and go with it, Nola, itâs the easiest way to handle it.â
âThe man called me into his office yesterday, and then didnât know why I was there,â she whispers.
âThatâs probably a good thing for you. Considering your nickname is based off of your reply of no; lazy.â
âI am lazy! So, I donât like to do things. He can fire me whenever he wants.â
You roll your eyes and prepare to reply but are interrupted by your cell phone ringing. You apologize to Nola before you answer it.
âHey, itâs me,â Deacon says on the other end of the line.
âIndeed, it is. Whatâs going on?â you reply.
âHow do you know something is going on?â
âItâs mid-morning on a weekday. And you never call me.â
âI call you all the time!â Deacon argues.
You laugh before you say, âNot when youâre at work.â
âOkay, fine, youâre right. Listen, weâre working on something, and your bossâs name came up.â
âDupree?â you inquire. âWhy?â
âI canât tell you exactly what weâre looking into, but Hondo and Hicks wanted to know if youâd be willing to help us.â
âOf course. Tell me what to do,â you agree.
âCan you come down here?â
âUh, yeah,â you answer. You open the calendar on your computer and add, âI can spare an hour and a half, is that enough time?â
âAbsolutely. Thank you,â Deacon says.
âAnything for you.â
You hang up and gather your things before standing.
âWhere are you off to? Please tell me youâre leaving to go on a date with the hot neighbor you always talk about,â Nola whispers.
âNot today. There was a slight mishap for some of our paperwork. I have to run to another office and get everything sorted out,â you lie. âIâll have my cell if you need anything.â
âDodging bullets left and right, arenât you? Go ahead, Iâll watch your phone and fill in Dupree if he notices youâre gone.â
âThanks, Nola.â
When you park outside the station, your thoughts begin spiraling. You sit in your seat and wonder if you made the right decision. Will you be in Deaconâs way or be too distracted by him to even help? What if something happens to him while youâre with him? What if he-
A tap on your window draws you from your questions. You turn your head and see Deacon looking at you through the glass. You send him a small smile as he opens your door and bends to look at you. His head tilts to this side, and when he lowers to a squat, his brown eyes distract you as he looks up at you.
âYou okay? You donât have to do this if you donât want to,â he says gently.
âNo, I want to. Just- I was thinking too much, I guess,â you reply.
Deacon nods and stands before offering his hand to help you out of your seat. He closes the door and ensures itâs locked before moving his hand to your back to lead you inside.
âNice to meet you. Iâm Hondo,â Hondo says as you enter.
You shake Hondoâs hand and introduce yourself as you follow him further into the station. He doesnât waste any time as he begins explaining as much as he can about how your boss is involved in the case theyâre working.
âWeâd like to send you in the get additional details on the office and any other information you can find,â Hondo says. âWeâve got basic floor plans, but we need insider info.â
âShe canât go in alone,â Deacon argues. âWe donât know what he has in that office. If she starts asking questions and he gets suspicious-â
You cut Deacon off by laying a hand on his shoulder and asking, âWhat if you go in with me? It wouldnât be that hard for me to lie about who you are; Dupree doesnât know most of the people who work in the building. Plus, you know what to look for better than I do.â
Hondo looks at Deacon and waits for his reply. You feel Deacon sigh against your hand before agreeing to go into the office with you.
âThereâs an employee entrance without metal detectors, but you have to swipe a keycard,â you explain. âTheyâll know if you piggyback with me.â
âOur techs can make him a keycard,â Hondo assures. âIf you have yours, they can copy parts of it.â
You nod and pass your card to Hondo. He turns and gives it to a passing officer with a few short instructions. Deacon pats your arm as he leaves to change; his uniform isnât business casual, but he said he'd find something more fitting.
â20 Squad is going to be close by,â Hondo begins. âDeacon can say a word and weâll be inside, but if you need help and get separated from Deacon, try to get to a window. Signaling for help is easiest with this; just keep it in your pocket or your hand and press the button if you need us.â
You accept the small device and slide it into your pocket. Itâs invisible, and you nod as Hondo reassures you everything will be okay.
âI know you canât tell me what exactly Dupree is doing, but youâre going to catch him, right?â you ask softly.
âAbsolutely. Nobody can run from S.W.A.T.â
You scan your keycard and wait for Deacon to do the same before opening the door. The employee entrance is on the side of the building, and you smooth your hands over your hips nervously. When you feel the device Hondo gave you, you relax slightly.
âWeâll walk to my desk, look at a few papers, and then go in?â you suggest as Deacon gestures for you to enter.
âSounds good,â he agrees.
âThe suit looks good,â you mumble as you walk toward the elevator.
Deacon chuckles as the elevator door opens, and you smile as he shakes his head at your flattery. The elevator is quiet, and as you wait to arrive on your floor, you take a few deep breaths. Deaconâs hand finds your lower back, and he rubs small, comforting circles before the door opens.
âStill working on the paperwork issue?â Nola asks when you reach your desk.
âYeah, we are. This is Ryan from the Santa Monica branch,â you say.
Nolaâs eyes narrow at you before she looks at Deaconâs hand. Heâs close to you, like always, but you donât understand her look. You raise your brows, but she only shrugs before looking back at her computer.
âWas it this one?â you ask Deacon.
He takes the blank form from your hand and nods. âYes, this is the one.â
You return the paper to its rightful place on your desk before leading Deacon down another hallway. Nolaâs reaction confused you at first, yet youâre not surprised when Deacon gently grabs your hip to stop you in the hallway.
âIâm sorry,â you whisper.
âItâs fine. Just stay calm and remember our covers. Like you said, Dupree wonât know any difference,â Deacon soothes. âAnd the teamâs waiting for our signal if we need them.â
You nod, and Deaconâs hands raise to your shoulders as he drops his chin to look into your eyes.
âYou got this,â he promises.
âI need to discuss an urgent matter with Mr. Dupree,â you inform his secretary. âThis is Mr. Ryan Davidson from the Santa Monica branch. There have been some discrepancies with paperwork submitted to their office, which needs Mr. Dupreeâs immediate attention.â
His secretary raises the receiver of her desk phone and whispers into it. You turn to look at Deacon, and he tilts his head to the left to signal you to stay calm and wait.
âYou can go on in,â the secretary says as she lowers the phone.
Deacon opens the door for you, and you step inside first.
âHello,â Mr. Dupree greets. He doesnât pretend to remember your name, you notice. âI heard thereâs an issue with some paperwork?â
âYes, sir,â Deacon says. âIâm Ryan Davidson with the Santa Monica office and weâve been having issues; receiving incomplete or incorrect paperwork from this branch.â
âMy sincerest apologies, Ryan. If you donât mind, use that laptop there and sign into your account while I bring mine up. Weâll get this sorted.â
You stand back as Deacon walks to the table at the back of the office and opens the laptop. Mr. Dupree didnât shake his hand, ask for identification, or take other proper steps before jumping to help. Itâs suspicious, but probably not what Deacon and his team need.
âWhat kind of incorrect information have you seen?â Mr. Dupree asks. You open your mouth to answer, and he adds, âRyan?â
âFinancial statements that arenât matching previous months, for one. Most likely an oversight or adding the same bill twice. Nothing too extreme, just something we need sorted before the end-of-year audits,â Deacon answers.
You raise your eyebrows in surprise at his response. He practically repeated a complaint you shared during your last dinner together.
âVery well. I donât know why the system is moving so slowly,â Dupree responds. He moves his hand under his desk as Deacon types.
You watch Dupree because Deaconâs team is getting him the access he needs. When you see the handle of a gun gripped in Dupreeâs hand, you call, âGun!â and drop to the floor just before he shoots above your head.
Deacon pulls his own weapon and points it at Dupree as he demands, âPut the gun down. Iâm Sergeant Kay, L.A.P.D. S.W.A.T.â
As Deacon speaks, you slowly press your back against the side of Dupreeâs desk, where he canât see you. Deaconâs eyes are on Dupree, but you watch Deacon because you trust him to keep you safe.
âI could put it down,â Dupree says. âBut if I angle it like this and pull the trigger, wouldnât it hit your little friend?â
Deacon glances at you quickly, and you lock eyes before you shift away from the oversized desk.
âOne more time: drop the gun,â Deacon repeats.
You canât see Dupree, but you clap your hands over your ears as you hear two shots. Everything goes quiet, and you lean forward slowly to look for Deacon. He kneels before you and gently pulls your hands away from your head. You let him move you before surging forward to hug him. He welcomes you into his arms as footsteps echo in the hallway outside.
âItâs okay. We got him,â Deacon promises.
You nod against Deacon and allow him to help you stand. Deacon keeps you angled away from Dupreeâs desk, and youâre happy to avoid looking.
âDid you get everything you need?â you ask quietly as Street and Luca lead a paramedic inside.
âWe did. Are you okay?â
Deacon lays a hand on your shoulder, and his thumb presses gently into your tense muscles as he looks into your eyes.
âGet her out of here. Hondo said you can take the rest of the day. Maybe she can practice for the competition,â Luca calls.
âI think you need the practice more than me,â you reply without turning.
Luca laughs as Deacon wraps an arm around your shoulders and leads you out of the office. He takes you back to your desk to get your things, and Nola rushes to hug you when you enter the open area.
âI heard the shots and was so worried!â she exclaims. âYouâre okay?â
âIâm fine,â you promise.
âThen I need you to do something. Go home and ask your neighbor out. Donât wait too long,â she says.
You nod and return to Deaconâs side. He heard everything from where he was standing, yet doesnât comment as he helps you into the passenger seat of his car. Once youâre on the road, he fills the silence by asking you questions about what you will cook for your competition with Luca. You know heâs trying to distract you from what happened, and you appreciate it.
Back at the station, you sign some paperwork to receive CI benefits before walking to Deaconâs side. He offers to drive you home and keep you company, which you happily accept. You never like leaving Deacon and donât want to be alone tonight.
âI waited too long,â Deacon murmurs while walking you out.
You stop and turn to face him as you ask, âFor what?â
âWhat your friend said. I waited too long to ask you out.â
You smile and slide your hand into his. âDid you know that Nola looked at us like that because you were standing really close to me?" Deacon shrugs, and you explain, âI never shut up about you, Deac. Iâm in love with you, so she was confused about why I was standing so close to another man.â
âNever?â Deacon repeats playfully.
âYou didnât wait too long, Deac,â you promise.
âI didnât?â
âNot if you take your chance right now.â
Deacon looks around quickly before yelling, âHicks! Did you file it yet?â
âNo; Iâm busy, Deacon,â Hicks answers.
âCan you make her Hondoâs CI?â
Hicks looks between the two of you and rolls his eyes. âYes, I can.â
When Deacon turns back to you, he doesnât give you time to speak before he asks, âWill you go out with me?â
âNothing would make me happier,â you answer.
Your smile grows to match Deaconâs, but he makes it disappear when he pulls you in and kisses you. The sound of clapping makes you open your eyes as you pull back. Hondo leads 20 Squad in a round of applause, and you bury your face in Deaconâs chest to hide your grin and burning embarrassment.
âMy CIâs never end up like this,â Hondo jokes.
âPretty good timing, though, wasnât it?â Deacon asks as he wraps his arms around you.
You stand wordlessly from the couch and walk past Deacon. He turns to watch you as you enter your bathroom and close the door. It only takes a moment for him to decide to follow you.
âAre you okay?â Deacon asks from outside the door. âAnd donât just say youâre fine. We both know youâre not.â
You open the door and lean against the vanity as he walks in. âI feel bad that you had to shoot Dupree. I know heâs fine and heâll recover, pay for him crimes, and everything. But you probably wouldnât have done that if I wasnât there.â
âDonât think like that. If he had refused to drop the gun or fired again, I would have stopped him. Whether you were there or not. The only thing that was different was how fast I decided to do it; he was threatening you, but that didnât affect my reaction itself.â
You nod, and Deacon places his hands on the vanity, caging you and keeping you close. âDonât carry that guilt around,â he requests. âIt gets heavy quickly.â
You slip your arms under Deaconâs to circle his waist. Because of your position, you look up at him and ask, âCould I have another kiss to help me overcome all of this guilt?â
Deacon laughs as his hand raises to rub your back. âAnything for my accidental CI.â
âIâm Hondoâs CI,â you remind him.
âBut Iâm the one that gets to kiss you, so who has the better timing?â
You let your kiss answer the question, and when Deacon pulls you against him to be even closer, you know that the wait was worth it. Though you probably wonât agree to go into the office of a weapon trafficker with him again, you will always be ready to help him when he asks and comfort him when he canât. Despite how much you loved Deacon when you thought you could only be friends, you feel more love now that you know he feels the same.

âI canât believe youâre going out with him tomorrow.â Ronnie bumped her hip against yours as she sat down on your couch next to you, âAnd on a Sunday.â
It was the night after. Jungkook sent you a nice good morning text and asked if you were available tomorrow to go out. You had triedâreally triedâto come up with any possible excuse to put off the date but alas fell short. So you agreed, you thought sooner this got started the sooner you could be done with it.Â
âWell we have to start somewhere.â Which wasnât a lie, Jungkookâs text was a surprise. âI actually didnât expect him to act so soon.â
Ronnie laughed, clearly amused, âWhat are you guys going to do? Dinner? Dancing? Skydiving?âÂ
âI donât know.â You slumped back further into the cushions. âHe said he was planning something. I made a jab about him about not being a serious guy, and now heâs all, Iâll show you how serious I can be.âÂ
âHow serious he can be? Itâs a first date not a proposal.â
âWeâll see, I guess. Honestly, I have no idea how to go about this. Iâm supposed to date him, but then, you know... gradually become annoying.â You gestured vaguely, not even sure what annoying would look like yet.
âI know just who can help with that.â Ronnie patted you on the knee and then immediately started typing frantically on her phone.Â
âOh no,â You knew immediately what she was doing.Â
Twenty minutes later, a myriad of knocks came from your front door. Opening your door, and in walked Jin with a flourish, his signature grin plastered across his face. In one hand, he held a bottle of wine, and in the other, a notepad that looked suspiciously like it had been used for devious plans before. He paused dramatically in the doorway, like a game show host about to reveal a grand prize.
âIâve been summoned.â Jin declared, his voice as grand as his entrance.
An already exhausted sigh leaves you, âOh hi. So good to see you, come on in.â Your voice drips with sarcasm. You let your door close and you make your way back onto the couch next to Ronnie. Settling in for whatever Jin clearly had prepared
Jin had placed himself in the front of your living room, like he had prepared a full presentation just for this occasion. âI was told my assistance was needed so I am here to grant it.â He did a small bow before the two of you and you roll your eyes
âHere we go.â You tease but Jin looked a little offended.Â
âYou,â He hits your leg with his note pad, and your mouth falls open at the gesture. âMy dear, have a tendency to stray from the goal. Youâre going on a date with this guyââ
âYou told him?â You gave a side eye to Ronnie, you were of course going to tell Jin but probably after.Â
Innocently, Ronnie shrugged. "You need a strong team to help you, who better than Jin to have around.âÂ
âExactly.â Jin perked up and you decided to surrender and listen. âAs your coach I am going to make sure we get make to the end gameâŚâ He gestures to you like he is expecting your answer.Â
âTo lose the guy in 30 days.âÂ
âCorrect!â Jin pulls a pen seemingly out of nowhere, Marking something down on his notepad. âOne point for you.âÂ
âWait, we are getting points?â Ronnie perked up, her clear competitive side showing through.Â
âIndeed!â Jin confirmed with a grin, enjoying the theatrics. âAnywaysââ
âHold on.â You cut him off, curiosity getting the better of you. âWhat do we get if we win?â
Jin paused, clearly not expecting this twist. He groaned, tapping his pen against his chin, deep in thought. After a moment, he dramatically sighed. âFine. Iâll buy your dinner next time we go out.â
âDeal,â You and Ronnie said in unison, sharing a knowing look. Giving each other a sportsmanlike handshake.
Jin waits for a moment like he is a teacher in class, â May I begin?â You and Ronnie both nod and settle back into the couch. âFirstly we need to go over your big rules for this.â
âRules?â
âImportant things to remember!â Jin cleared his throat. With a quick flip of his notepad, he glanced down, all business now. âRule number oneââ
âYou made some already?â You interrupt him again.
He cut you off with a finger to his lips, âNumber one. We will not be falling in love with Jungkook.â
âIâm not going to fall in love with him. I donât even know him!â You sit up with some protest.Â
Jin narrowed his eyes, his glare accusing. âYou have a tendency to fall a little too easily for wit and charm! Remember, Jungkook is a serial fuck boy!.â Jin paused for effect and turns around his notepad and underlines the note he has that says, in all caps: SERIAL FUCKBOY. Followed by other rules and scribbles along the rest of the page.
Ronnie letâs out a small laugh and you resign yourself back, âOkay fair point.â
âWhatâs the first rule?â Jin repeats pointing his pen back at you.Â
âWe will not fall in love with Jungkook!â Ronnie raises her hand but blurts it out and you just huff. Although this rule was fair, you knew it but it didnât feel great to be called out on it.Â
âPoint to Ronnie. Rule number two.â Jin waves his pen around in the air like its a wand, âBe annoying at any given opportunity but not too annoying. So sending too many texts, memes,, calling him at inappropriate times.â
âOr calling one too many times!â Ronnie added on to the end of his statement.Â
âHalf point for adding an idea.â Jin scribbled on his pad for a moment.Â
You scratched the side of your head, feeling a twinge of discomfort. âOkay, this one might actually be hard.â
Jin arched a brow. âWhy?â
You shifted a little, pulling your knees up onto the couch. âIâm not really the overbearing type. I usually let people have their space, give them time... Itâs just not who I am.â
Jin clicked his tongue, wagging his finger at you like a disappointed parent. âThis is why you need to fight your people-pleasing instincts! A delicate task, but one you must master.âÂ
You sighed, already feeling the internal battle. âI know, I know. Iâll try.â
âGood girl,â Jin praised, patting your head dramatically. âIf itâs too hard, just let one of us take over. Weâve got no skin in the game, so we can be as obnoxious as we want.â He gestured to himself and then Ronnie, who had an evil expression across her face.
âIâll take any opportunity to torture a man.â Ronnie wiggled her eyebrows at you, and nudged her with your shoulder.
Jin clapped his hands together, refocusing the energy in the room. âNow, whatâs rule number two?â
âBe annoying at any given opportunity.â You sigh and repeat it back to him.Â
âPoint to Y/N.â Jin marked down on his notepad again, âRule number three. This is not going to be a serious relationship. Period.â
âThis is a rule?â
âMore like a reminder.â Jin looked a bit more serious, âYou have a tendency to fall into the I can fix him trap. That is not the case here, this guy does not want anything long term. So you have to avoid your natural attachment instincts.âÂ
âAs well as your situation will be starting on false pretenses.â Ronnie pointed out, which was true. All of this was starting on a lie. An experiment.
âOkay thatâs fair.â
Funny enough though, this is the most detached you had ever felt going into a first date. Other first dates you had been really nervous or really excited and you were thinking through every word and every touch a little too deeply. This time felt totally laid back and different. Like it might be easy and you could keep yourself from falling into your usual habits.
âRule number three?â Jin waved, waiting for the answer.Â
Both you and Ronnie repeated at the same time, âThis is not going to become a serious relationship.â
âPoint to you both.âÂ
The game continued for a while, with Jin rattling off a mixture of absurd, funny, and surprisingly thoughtful rules. Some had you rolling your eyes, others made you laugh.. There was something about the way Jin played this outâkeeping you focused on the goal without letting the seriousness of it weigh you down.
In the back of your mind, you realized what he was doing. Jin was good at that, pulling you out of your overthinking spiral and making everything feel lighter. It wasnât about figuring out all the answers nowâit was just a date. All the complicated stuff? You could deal with that later. He had this way of turning every dilemma into something manageable, even fun.
Jungkook wasnât some life-altering mystery; he was just a random guy. By the end of this, it would be nothing but a funny story. One of those "remember when" tales you'd laugh about over drinks. Difficult? Maybe. But funny? Definitely.Â
However much you were planning a sabotage, Jungkook was trying to plan the greatest first date ever. Except it wasnât going quite as planned. Jungkook had not been on a real first date in years. What did people do on first dates anymore?Â
âFun things to do on first dates⌠reddit.â Jungkook muttered to himself, typing on his phone.. Hoseok didnât quite hear what Jungkook was muttering and looking over his shoulder to see what he was searching for.Â
âDonât tell me you are consulting reddit for date ideas.â He chuckled but stopped when he realized how serious Jungkook looked. âDude, come on. Since when do you care this much about a first date?â.Â
Jungkook groaned, running his hand through his hair. âI donât remember the last time I was on a real one, Hobi. Itâs been... a while. Every date Iâve been on, we both knew what it was about, well you know. No expectations.â He frowned at his phone, closing the tab in frustration. âI donât want it to be lame.â
âIf I didnât know you better I would think you cared or something." Hoseok pinched Jungkookâs cheek with some exaggerated affection, but Jungkook pushed him away.
âWell thatâs the thing. We have to be able to talk and get to know each other. Which I suck at.â To Hoseok, Jungkook actually looked to be concerned and it seemed important. Hoseok would almost believe Jungkook wanted to prove a bigger point by winning this bet against Jimin and Taehyung.Â
âAnd usually you spend your time what⌠not really talking?â Hoseok thought but felt stupid for even questioning it. âRight. I forgot who I was talking too.â
Jungkook shifted uncomfortably. âOkay, okay, I get it. I donât exactly⌠excel in the conversation department.â
âExcel in other things apparently.â Hoseok laughed and Jungkook rubbed his face.Â
âWell now I need to change my ways.â Jungkook groaned before thinking, âYou know, a really good friend would help me in my time of need.â
âNo.â
âPlease?â
Hoseok looked straight ahead, trying to ignore the pleading. âNo way. Iâm not getting sucked into that ridiculous group bet you guys cooked up. I have standards, you know.â Hoseok held his ground, knowing he will fold if he saw Jungkookâs pathetic face. Jungkook was giving him that sad little pouty face anyways.Â
âPlease Hobi. Iâll owe you big time.â Jungkook whined and shook Hoseok by the shoulders. "Plus you are great on first dates.â
âYou donât know that.âÂ
âYou always have these great date stories. Youâre really good at this stuff.â Jungkook settled back and let Hoseok go.Â
Hoseok sighed and gave him a sidelong glance. âYouâre not as hopeless as you think, you know. Youâre just out of practice.â
Jungkook instantly perked up. âI knew you couldnât resist helping me.â
âYeah yeah whatever, but this is the last time I will help you with any of this.â Hoseok gave a warning finger to Jungkook, âIâm only doing this for this poor girl.â
âDeal.â Jungkook nodded quickly, ready to move on, but Hoseok wasnât done.
âBe honest with me though.â Hoseokâs tone was even more serious now and Jungkook gave his full attention, âAre you going to tell this girl the truth when this is all over? Itâs messed up if youâre just dating her to win the money and then dump her.âÂ
Jungkook froze for a second. The thought hadnât fully crossed his mind in detail before now, which, in itself, was a red flag. He had been so focused on the logistics of the bet and the potential payoff that he hadnât considered the real impact on you. Which, Hoseok was right, made him kind of a jerk by default.Â
âYeah. Iâll tell her the truth. Iâll be completely honest once itâs all over. And then⌠she can decide what she wants to do.â âOkay⌠just feels really weird. If you are only dating her for the money.â Hoseok pointed out, not fully convinced by Jungkookâs statement.
Jungkook bit his lip. Hoseok had a point, and now that it was out in the open, it ate at him. The bet really felt harmless in nature. A chance to see if Jungkook was even built for dating anymore. The money was a nice bonus, sure, and getting to date an attractive woman didnât hurt either. But now, he was starting to see the faults in all of this.
It had been⌠longer than he liked to admit since heâd dated someone seriously. Even longer since heâd genuinely liked someone. He didnât want this to turn into some shallow game where feelings got stomped on in the process.
âI promise I am going to give this a real shot. Beyond the money.â Jungkook was sure and confident in his answer. Even if he wasnât so confident in how he was feeling about dating again.Â
Hoseok studied Jungkook for a moment, but found he was satisfied with the answer. âWho knows maybe this will turn out really great for you. If you take it seriously, maybe this could be something really great.âÂ
âOkay letâs not jump too far ahead.â Jungkook nervously laughed, âLetâs get past the first date.â After all, Jungkook still had plenty of time to mess this up and it could all be for nothing.

Day 1
Leaving the train station, all the nerves you thought you didnât have about all of this rushed through you. Your heart thudded in your chest as you made your way up unfamiliar streets. You checked in with Jungkook this morning the plan and he had sent you and address to what looked to be a cafĂŠ. Thatâs what youâd seen when you pulled it up on Maps, and yet, it felt like more than just a casual coffee date. A sense of unease tugged at you.
You had tried subtly fishing for details earlier, asking what you should wear, but he only responded vaguely with a simple dress nice. No clues. JustâŚnice. So, you were left to mull over your wardrobe, trying not to overthink it, but of course that did not work.
Yesterday, you had convinced yourself this would be no big deal, but now? It felt like you were walking yourself into a trap you laid yourself. Yes this was for work but you couldnât help but feel so strange with all of it. You had to keep reminding yourself, this was all business. This is for your professional career.Â
It was the only thing that kept you grounded, instead of daydreaming.Â
When you rounded the final corner and spotted the cafĂŠ, your stomach did a sharp flip. There he was, Jungkook. Standing by the door, leaning ever so casually against the wall. He looked different, so different that for a second, you almost didnât realize it was him. He wasnât the guy youâd run into casually at the bar anymore. No, he looked polished. Adult.
He wore a pair of well-tailored black slacks that hugged his hips, and a white button-up with the sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms, showing off his tattoos in a way that made your heart skip. You didnât really see his tattoos at the bar so now you had a chance to actually see them.Â
Two buttons were left undone at the top, and you caught a glimpse of a silver chain against his skin. His dark hair, usually so relaxed, was flipped out at the ends, styled deliberately but effortlessly. He had on sunglasses, so you couldnât quite read his expression.
Oh no. Oh no no no.Â
Because this Jungkook and the Jungkook at the bar were suddenly two completely different people. Jungkook at the bar was a guy you could easily mess with⌠this Jungkook⌠was exactly your type.Â
Shit.
You pull out your phone and send a frantic text.Â
:ABORT!Â
Ronnie: The date hasnât even started!
Ronnie: YOU CAN DO THIS!
:I canât. He cleaned up. You were right I canât do this.Â
Ronnie: NO
Ronnie: REMEMBER YOUR RULES
This is not a serious relationship. You will not fall in love with Jungkook. He is a serial fuck boy.Â
You could hear Jinâs words clearly in your mind. So clearly in fact, but another part of your mind and heart were speaking louder. That little part of you that liked that he put some thought into how he dressed for this. He actually took careful consideration into how he should present himself for you. It made that little pink heart of yours flutter with excitement.Â
Snap out of it. Heâs just a guy.
You shake your head, and ground yourself. You are a writer. You are doing this in the name of research and science. You can do this. This is just a date. A date.Â
You force one foot in front of you, going over to him, âJungkook.â flashing your best smile, the one you hope masks the unease swirling in your stomach.
Jungkookâs eyes snap up to meet yours, and his entire face lights up with a warm, easy grin that disarms you for a moment. He pushes a hand through his hair, letting the dark strands fall effortlessly back into place.
Jungkook found himself a little disarmed as well. He had gotten a lot of tips from Hoseok the night before about how he should act and carry himself if he wanted to do this right⌠but he didnât expect you to look so cute. Youâre dressed in something simpleâcasual but still pretty. Your smile was so warm and inviting he immediately felt that desire to pull any of his usual lines, but he fought that urge.Â
This is not a hookup, this is a real date.Â
âIâve gotta hand it to you,â Jungkook says, his tone teasing. âI thought for sure youâd ditch me.â
You force a laugh, though itâs a little shaky, hoping he doesnât notice the way your nerves are still very much present. âHad to see for myself if you could actually step up.â
He chuckles and steps back, spreading his arms out to his sides as if presenting himself for inspection. His confidence is palpable, and it makes it worse? Better? No, definitely worse. âTold you I could take this seriously.â
And he had. Hoseok actually decided Jungkook should go for dressy but simple. Simpler the better. Means you are seeing him and not a façade. Hoseok had warned him to not carry himself too high because it could come off as arrogant. So he retreated from his normal confident stance, trying to pull his natural instinct back a bit. Why was this so hard?
âThatâs for me to judge,â You say, lifting your chin and tilting your head at him playfully. âDateâs barely begun.â
âWell,â Jungkook held the cafĂŠ door open for you, âI thought a quick coffee and a short train ride wouldnât hurt to start.âÂ
âDo I get to know where we are going now?âÂ
âNow why ruin the magic?â Jungkook's tone is a little more flirtatious now. You couldnât help it when it makes you blush, but you try to shake it off.
The two of you grabbed your drinks to-go and quickly left the cafĂŠ, heading toward the train station. The conversation so far had been lightâsmall pleasantries exchanged, but nothing too deep. It felt like you were both easing into the moment, cautiously testing the waters. Jungkook, however, was doing a surprisingly good job of keeping things moving, keeping the energy up. He seemed determined to make sure this date went well, as if he had something to proveânot just to you, but maybe even to himself.
The city blurred past the windows, concrete and steel flashing by, though your mind wasnât really on the view. The train rumbled beneath your feet, the soft hum of people chattering fading into the background. You were acutely aware of Jungkook standing so close, his presence hard to ignore.
âSo here we are,â Jungkook said with a small smirk, leaning in just enough to catch your eye.
âHere we are,â you echoed, a smile tugging at your lips.
âI know weâve got to do the usual first-date dance,â he continued, taking a casual sip of his drink. âSo feel free to ask me whatever you want.â
âAnything?â You smirked, sensing an opportunity for fun.
âAnything at all,â Jungkook replied, mirroring your playful tone. âIâm a completely open book.â
You paused for a beat, keeping the moment light. âAlright, letâs start simple. Job?â
âEngineer,â he replied confidently. âYou?â
âWriter.â Your response was met with a raised brow from him.
âVery interesting,â Jungkook remarked, almost like he hadnât expected that answer.
You tilted your head slightly. âHow so?â
âI just donât meet many writers. Journalist?â
âCorrect.â You smirked, impressed with his deduction. âOkay, your turn. Hobbies?â
Jungkook's eyes brightened at the question, and he leaned in closer, his hand still gripping the pole above. âPhotography.â
You raised an eyebrow, intrigued. âReally? What kind of work do you do?â
âStreet photography,â He shot you a grin, clearly pleased. He didnât get to talk about his photography very much these days. âMostly just day to day things. People living their lives or things that I find pretty. I like how raw it feels.â
He didnât think he would be sharing this but Hoseok did say he should be less afraid to share the more vulnerable sides of his personality.Â
âThatâs... actually really cool,â you admitted, genuinely impressed. It was clear this hobby wasnât just for show. It was something he cared about. âDo you ever share your work?â
He looked down for a moment, a shy laugh escaping him. âNot really. I mean, Iâve shown a few to close friends, but itâs more for me. A way to... I donât know, relax, I guess. Focus.â
You hadnât realized it but you had become so laser focused on him now. You shook your head and had to remind yourself to come back to reality. Remember, heâs only saying these things to impress you; itâs not real.
Jungkook continued, âWhat about you?âÂ
âPainting. Itâs a new hobby so Iâm really terrible.â You laugh thinking about your really sad first attempt at watercolor sitting on your dining table at home. You had tried to just do a simple flower but it definitely looks like a small creature instead.Â
âAnything I could see?â
âGod no,â you laugh a little too loud and embarrassed, âTrust me they are terrible.â You pause for a second and think, âOkay, how about your favorite food?âÂ
âEasy. Fried chicken.â His answer was quick, like it was non-negotiable. âYours?â
âPasta. Any kind, really.â
âOh I make a really good carbonara.â He threw the comment out there seeing if you would bite.Â
âIs this your invitation at a second date?â You narrow your eyes at him.
âWeâll have to find out.âÂ
You brush past his comment, âWhatâs the last movie you watched?â
âInterstellar.â
You raised an eyebrow. âNot bad. So youâre into space stuff?â
âWho isnât?â Jungkook's expression softened, eyes glinting with a bit of excitement. âYou?â
â10 things I hate about you.â
âRomance fan?â
âIâm a sucker for a good love story.â You shrug.
Jungkook laughed, glancing around the train as if to make sure no one else was eavesdropping on your banter. âAlright, one more from me: Whatâs something people donât know about you?â
You leaned back in your seat, tapping your chin like you were really pondering it. âIâm embarrassingly bad at bowling.â
Jungkook laughed again, his grin wide and easy. âAwe so youâre saying our second date should be bowling?â
âOnly if youâre okay with watching me throw gutter balls all night,â you teased.
âIâll just have to teach you,â Jungkook quipped, his flirtation bubbling back to the surface. The playful tension between you building.Â
Jungkook was surprised at himself, because he was actually good at this. Keeping things light, fun, yet somehow engaging enough to make you feel at ease. The back-and-forth flowed effortlessly, and before you knew it, the train slowed for your stop.
âSo how am I doing so far?â Jungkook asked, as you both hopped off the train.
You took a slow sip of your coffee, drawing out the silence to keep him in suspense. Humming, you finally raised an eyebrow at him. âWell, the coffeeâs good, so points there.â you mused, âbut the scenery? It left a lot to be desired.â You teased, gesturing subtly to the less-than-charming view from the train window.
âWell our next location will have a much better view I promise.â Jungkook assured.Â
Before long, the two of you arrived at your destinationâthe aquarium. To your surprise, despite the clichĂŠ of an aquarium being a typical first-date spot, there was something about it that immediately felt special. Jungkook had already secured the passes online, casually pulling them up on his phone as you neared the entrance. His relaxed demeanor seemed to contrast with your initial nerves, but seeing him here, comfortable in a place like this was calming in itself.Â
âIâve never been here, actually,â you mused, taking in the murals that adorned the entrance. Sea creatures, some extinct and some from modern day stretched up toward the high ceilings. It was both beautiful and intriguing, the imagery setting the tone for what lay inside.
Jungkook followed your gaze, a small smile tugging at his lips as he leaned closer. âWell, youâre in good hands. Youâre with the foremost aquarium expert in the city,â he said with a playful glint in his eyes. âIâve been coming here since I was a kid, so I can probably tell you more about the fish than the staff can.â
You raised an eyebrow, amused by his confidence. âOh? A fish expert, huh? Iâm expecting a seriously educated tour then. I want to walk away knowing everything about aquatic life.â
Jungkook chuckled, his grin widening. âTrust me, by the time we leave, youâll be able to name at least three species of jellyfish without googling it.â
You laughed softly, shaking your head. âThatâs quite the promise.â
Jungkook then guided you inside, the cool, dimly lit interior of the aquarium enveloped the both of you, contrasting sharply with the bright, bustling world outside. The gentle hum of water filtering through the tanks that expanded both walls of the exhibit, mixed with the occasional murmur of other visitors, created a serene atmosphere. It was pretty busy, most with other families and some teenagers running around. Jungkook led the way confidently through everyone, his playful energy still very present, but with an ease that was contagious.
Jungkook caught a glimpse of your profile as you took in the vibrant sea creatures. She looks intrigued, he thought. His heart raced a little, and he couldnât help but smile at the thought. Maybe Iâm doing a good job so far.
âAlright, letâs start here,â He pointed towards the first exhibit, a massive floor-to-ceiling tank filled with vibrant schools of tropical fish darting through the corals. âFun factâmost of these fish are native to the Indo-Pacific region.â
âImpressive,â you replied, glancing between him and the fish, already intrigued. âWhat else?â
Jungkookâs grin widened as he launched into an impromptu lecture about the ecosystem of coral reefs, his enthusiasm making it hard not to be drawn in. As much as you were supposed to be trying to find little annoyances for your plan, you couldnât help but enjoy the flow of the conversation. It didnât feel forced. Instead, it was comfortableâlighthearted, but surprisingly informative.
âOkay, okay,â you interrupted at one point, leaning slightly into him as you looked up at the jellyfish exhibit. The tank glowed softly with blue and purple lights, jellyfish gracefully floating like little underwater ghosts. âWhat about these? Teach me about jellyfish, Mr. Expert.â
âAh, jellyfish,â Jungkook said dramatically, pausing like he was about to unveil a great mystery. âJellyfish have what are called hydrostatic skeleton.â
âAnd what are those?â You blinked, you expression clearly saying you had no idea what that meant.
âThey have no bones, they have circular muscles and they have to contract their muscles to move along the ocean.â he nodded. âThere is also a species that is essentially immortal. Turritopsis dohrnii. They can reset to their juvenile form after reaching maturity, which allows them to avoid dying of old age. So, yeah, immortal jellyfish.â
You stared at him for a second, half-expecting him to say he was joking, but the serious expression on his face told you otherwise. âOkay, thatâs actually super cool. You werenât kidding about being an expert.â
As the two of you wandered through the aquarium, it surprise you how easily the conversation flowed between the both of you. Jungkook pointed out different fish, talked about their unique traits, and asked you questions too, like what your favorite animal was or whether you had any pets growing up. It didnât feel like an interrogation, but more like a genuine curiosity, and that put you more at ease.
You reached the penguin exhibit, and Jungkook stopped in front of the glass, his eyes lighting up as a group of penguins waddled by. âPenguins are the best,â he declared, âThey mate for life, you know?â
âNow that I did know. Iâve seen march of the penguins.â To be fair is was when you were extremely young and that may be the only fact you could pull from the movie.Â
âI used to sit here and watch the penguins for hours. I just thought they were so cool when they would slide along on their bellies.â Jungkook mused and realized he had been guiding the conversation for a while now. âSeriously stop me anytime though. I can go on and on about animal facts.âÂ
âDonât stop! I think itâs cute,â you said, nudging him playfully with your shoulder. The moment felt light and playful, and you liked it.
âOh, so you think Iâm cute?â Jungkook smirked, wiggling his brows. The thought sent a flutter through your chest, and you felt heat creeping up your cheeks.Â
âOr just a nerd.â You pull yourself away in front of the exhibit and start to press on to the next section. âCome on geek!âÂ
It was hard to remember you were supposed to be finding ways to be annoying or difficult when things were going this smoothly. Maybe Jin and Ronnie would have to help more with that later because, right now, this was actually...fun. More fun than you had expected.
As you both continued on through the aquarium, the awkwardness that often accompanies first dates seemed to non existent. By the time you reached the final exhibitâan enormous tank filled with sharks and stingrays gliding overhead. It surrounded the entire room and there were section you could go and stand and watch fish swim above you. You and Jungkook found a nice spot to sit and to just watch. You had a found a fascination with a rather large stingray floating around the tank.Â
âIâm in heavy anticipation for your shark facts.â You kick your feet back and forth and glance to your side at Jungkook who was enraptured with the tank.Â
âMaybe not a fun fact, but hammerheads will trap sting rays with their heads to the seafloor to catch and eat them.âÂ
âHuh,â he was correct not so fun but still interesting, âI always wondered what their heads we good for.â
Jungkook hummed, a smile on his face. He had started the day nervous but he felt so comfortable now. The aquarium was actually Hoseok's idea, told Jungkook he should go somewhere where he could be at ease and maybe show off a bit. Now showing off fish facts may have been unconventional, it was working here. You seemed to be really enjoying yourself, and laughing at most of his little jokes.
In that moment of silence, as he observed a sleek shark swim by, he glanced over at you, his voice softening. âSo, how am I doing so far? Honestly.â
You looked at him, taking a beat before answering. âWell, Iâll admit I didnât expect you to actually be this...interesting.â You teased, keeping it light. âBut youâve definitely surprised me.â
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his expression. âSurprised you in a good way, I hope?â
It was good, but horribly horribly bad. Because you werenât sure if you could go through with this, Jungkook was nice and goofy. He took you somewhere he clearly really enjoyed and spent his day trying to make you laugh and smile. It was one of the best first dates you had been on in a long time. Maybe Jin had the completely wrong idea about Jungkook? Maybe this was all a mistake? Maybe you could find something real with Jungkook.Â
You would have to find a different guy for your experiment, not ideal but you admittedly were already having a small crush on Jungkook. A small voice in the back of your mind was screaming, I told you so. I knew you couldnât do this. You are too much of a gooey romantic to pull this off.Â
âGood so far.â You smile, and turn your body to face him, âOkay, ask me anything you want. My turn to be an open book.âÂ
âOh really?â Jungkook raised an eyebrow but also adjusted to face you. âOkay. What made you become a writer?âÂ
âOh, good question.â You thought for a moment, âI used to be a mini reporter when I was younger. I used to dress up like an old 40âs style detective or journalist and I would write news stories about things happening in my neighborhood.âÂ
âDid you pick up anything juicy?â
You shook your head, laughing at the memory. âNot at all. It was usually just anything I saw happen. Like breaking news: Ryan fell off his bike, or Mrs. Johnson bought apples and milk from the store. It was never anything groundbreaking, but I loved it.â Excitement seeped into your tone. âAs I got older, I realized I liked reporting and journalism of any kind, even trashy magazine writing. I just wanted to be one of them. Have my name on something like that.â
Jungkook listened intently, fascinated. He found himself wrapped up in how animated and alive you looked talking about your passion. He admired the way your hands danced through the air as you spoke, and for a brief moment, he allowed himself to picture you living out your dreams, pen in hand, telling the stories of the world.
âSo what are you writing now?â Jungkook wanted to hear more, hear more about what made you excited.Â
You paused, because even though Jungkook didnât know, that was a heavy question. âThe promotion I mentioned the other night? Iâm getting promoted from research to an actual writer for the magazine Iâm at.âÂ
Jungkook eyebrows shot up, âThatâs incredible.âÂ
âI know. Itâs a huge deal and the piece Iâm working on is⌠well.â You chewed on your lip, âItâs a research heavy piece and requires me to go out and do some actual field work.âÂ
âI want to read it when itâs done.â Jungkook had a genuine smile on his face and he hadnât taken his eyes off of you since you started. You had just now noticed and all of those first date nerves came bubbling up in you.Â
âOh, no.â You let out a breathy laugh, âItâll be just a silly little think piece when itâs done.â
âSo?â Jungkook tilted his head trying to meet your eyes, âI want to be your first reader when itâs published. Then I can walk around and brag about it.âÂ
You nervously laugh to yourself, âIâll make sure you get the first copy.âÂ
Even though inside you were thinking, absolutely no way in hell is that happening.Â
âPerfect,â he said, nodding eagerly. âIâll hold you to that.â
The two of you settled back into a comfortable silence, your gaze drifting back to the mesmerizing display of fish swimming above. You couldnât help but feel lighter.
âSo what do you think your ultimate goal as a writer is?â It surprised you little when he continued, you didnât think he would want to know more about it.Â
âI thinkâŚâ You said for a moment, watching a school of fish go by in the glass. âI want to be a funny writer but also someone who makes you think. I want my work to feel real but also force you to really examine yourself.âÂ
âWell when you get famous and stuff,â Jungkook stood from his seat, âI get to say I knew you.â He extended a hand out to you. He hadnât offered his hand the entire date, but he felt like now was appropriate.Â
You stared at it for a moment, he's just helping you up that's all, then you slipped your hand into his and stood with him. So to your own surprise, he didnât let you go. Jungkook lacing his fingers into yours, and it made your heart race in your chest. Goosebumps rising on your skin.Â
âNow we still have plenty of other things left to see.â With a swift movement Jungkook began to pull you along into the rest of the aquarium.Â
You both bounced around exhibits you had already seen and joked around a lot along the way. Jungkook also had plenty of more fish facts to throw out when you would encounter something you may have missed before. After a while the both of you managed to make it back to the front of the aquarium and found the gift shop.Â
âOh these are cute.â You pull up a pair of tiny penguins that had magnets in the fins that held them together. âI think you can split them up so you can give one to someone.âÂ
âThatâs really cute.â Jungkook really wasnât looking at anything, he was having more fun watching you look around at the items. Everything a bit too overpriced.Â
You had a thought in mind, and took the penguins up to the counter. After the cashier rung you up and you took the penguins out of their package and gave one to Jungkook. He looked confused.Â
âOne for you.â you smiled, âFor such a nice first date.âÂ
âThey mate for life, you canât split them up.â Jungkook fake pointed and you rolled your eyes, you eyes the pocket on the front of his button up and tucked the penguin into his pocket. It fit perfectly so the head was sticking out.Â
You giggle a little at it and Jungkook smiles at your amusement, you then stick the other penguin to the shirt to see if the magnets would still stick and to your surprise they do indeed stick together. Jungkook also laughs at the gesture and then hands the other penguin back to you.Â
As Jungkook handed you the second penguin, you couldnât help but feel a rush of warmth at his playful smile. It felt like a secret shared between the two of you, an inside joke that was unique to this moment. You turned the penguin over in your hands, admiring the tiny details.
âThese little guys can be a reminder of our first adventure together,â you said, glancing up at him. âEvery time I see mine, Iâll think of you and all your random fish facts.â
âI knew all of this aquatic knowledge would come in handy some day.â
The both of you made your way out to the entrance of the aquarium. You werenât even really sure what time it was but the sun was starting to set and it was raining outside to both of your surprise. You and Jungkook had been so wrapped up in the day you hadn't even thought to even check your phones or check the weather for the day. Jungkook hadnât either, he really hadnât expected to enjoy himself this much but here he was. He really didnât want the date to end.Â
âWe might have to make a run for the subway.â Jungkook glanced out the windows, it was really coming down hard now.Â
âIâm so going to get sick.â You laugh, but with some confidence and you push the exit door open, stepping into the rain and looking back waiting for Jungkook to follow. The rain hitting you and icy cold hug it made you gasp.Â
Jungkook laughed too, the sound brightening the dreary weather. Without a second thought, he dashed out into the rain after you, grabbing your hand as you both braved the elements. The rain was relentless, and you quickly found yourselves sprinting up the street toward the nearest subway station.
The air was crisp, and the rain felt like little stinging needles against your skin. âDefinitely an unexpected twist for a first date.â You called to him, the sound of the rain was deafening.Â
âWhat do you mean? Running in the rain? Itâs a totally rom com clichĂŠ.â Jungkook calling back to your love for romance movies.Â
The both of you kept moving but began to shiver a bit. The only heat between the both of you coming from your hands wrapped in each other.Â
The both of you could see the station just up ahead. The both of you trying to keep a quick pace so you could get in and catch the train. You and Jungkook and you spotting a puddle you both try to gracefully jump over, but the slickness of the ground betraying Jungkook. He slips a little and almost takes you with him. laughter spilled from your lips, mixing with the sound of rain splashing against the pavement. It was pure chaos, but it felt exhilarating. Jungkookâs eyes sparkled with mischief as he glanced at you, and for a moment, all the worries of the world faded away.
âAn interesting way to close out the date.â You try wiping away some water from your face but it was useless at this point. âMy outfit is definitely ruined.â
âI donât know, I think the wet look is in.â his hair was sticking to the side of his face an forehead, he was clearly shivering but was still managing to have a boyish grin on his face. As you both reached the subway entrance, you paused, leaning against the wall, your laughter dying down into soft giggles. The rain still poured down around you, but it felt different nowâintimate, almost magical. Jungkookâs eyes were bright, his expression softening as he looked at you.
For a moment, everything else faded away. The world around you blurred, and it felt like it was just the two of you in that cocoon of raindrops and laughter. Despite the biting chill of the rain soaking through your clothes, a warmth blossomed within you, igniting a spark that felt impossibly bright. Your heart pounded in your ears, drowning out everything else.
Jungkook stepped closer, his gaze flickering between your eyes and your lips. You felt your own gaze drawn to his, mesmerized by the way his pink lips glistened in the dim light, kissed by the rain. He looked so cute, his expression a mix of surprise and delight. Before you could think about it, you closed the distance and pressed your lips to his.
Initially, Jungkook seemed taken aback, but the moment was electric, and he quickly melted into the kiss. What had started as a tentative peck transformed into something more quickly. He responded with surprising warmth, his hand gently cradling your cheek as he kissed you again, pulling you closer as if he wanted to shield you from the cold.
That kiss was sweet and tender, a balm against the rain. The warmth spread through you, wrapping around your heart like a cozy blanket.Â
When you finally pulled away, breathless, your cheeks flushed from both the cold and the moment. Jungkookâs eyes sparkled with a mix of surprise and happiness, a wide grin breaking across his face.Â
âIâm pretty sure kissing in the rain is the biggest clichĂŠ of them all.â Jungkook broke the tension in the air and is made you roll your eyes, you taking his hand again and pulling him into the station.
You both managed to make it to your train in time. You werenât sure if Jungkook also lived this direction but he was coming with you nonetheless. The two of you were leaving puddles behind the both of you everywhere you went.Â
When you got off at the right station you realized how hungry you actually were now. Starving in fact, you and Jungkook had so wrapped up in the aquarium food was the last thing on your mind, âAre you hungry?â
âReally hungry actually.â Jungkook was now realizing he was beginning to fade away with the lack of food.Â
âYou want to get something to eat?â
The two of you found the closest place you could find to eat nearby and there was a crowded restaurant. The two of you managed to get a table really easily and settled it. You both got a series of weird looks at the state the two of you were in, but the two of you didnât really care.Â
As you excused yourself to the bathroom, your heart was still racing from the high of the day. You needed a moment away from the intensity, a breath of space to gather your thoughts. The date had been so easy, so natural. Nothing like what youâd imagined when you first got involved in this whole thing. But you couldnât let yourself get lost in the fantasy.
Once inside the bathroom, you didnât even bother to check the mirror. You pulled out your phone, pacing frantically as you called Ronnie and Jin, knowing theyâd be waiting for an update.
âGuys,â you blurted out, your voice low but panicked, âI canât go through with this. I swear heâs just⌠a regular guy. This isnât what we thought!â
There was a pause before Jinâs voice came through loud and clear. âBad writer!â he scolded you. âDo not waver now. Heâs playing you, just like we suspected.â
âIâm telling you, Jin, it feels real. The way heâs acting⌠heâs not some player. This all feels too genuine.â You caught your reflection in the mirror and grimaced, frustrated with yourself for even saying it out loud.
Ronnie chimed in, clearly less invested in your emotional rollercoaster, but supportive nonetheless. âSounds too good to be true if you ask me. Stay strong, Y/N. This guyâs probably a master at making things feel real. Thatâs what they do. Youâve got this.â
You sighed, adjusting your hair with your free hand as you continued pacing. âYou guys arenât here with me! You didnât see him todayâheâs been amazing. Itâs not like other dates where itâs all surface-level stuff. We were wrong.â
âIâm never wrong,â Jin insisted with that trademark smugness of his. âTrust me, his true colors will show soon. Stick to the plan.â
With some more arguments. They forced you to not give up and continue, Jin convinced he is still correct about Jungkook.Â
He didnât see him today though.Â
You rejoined Jungkook back at your booth and you were sitting right next to each other. Jungkook was typing on his phone, which managed to survive the downpour. You were also surprised that your phone somehow managed to survive it. Right not though, Jin and Ronnie were completely blowing it up with messages following your call.Â
âWhat is it?â Jungkookâs curiosity getting the better of him, glancing to your phone briefly but then looking away.Â
You shake your head, âNothing my friends were just worried about me because I wasnât responding. They thought you might have murdered me or something.â A lie but it would disarm his curiosity.
âHow do they know you havenât killed me?â Jungkook joked, and you smiled.Â
You shrug and set you phone down on the table. âNights still young. That could very well happen.âÂ
âFun.â Jungkook laughed at your obvious sarcasm. âIâll be right back.âÂ
Jungkook placed his phone down next to yours and excused himself away. Probably to go to the bathroom. You felt a warm glow in your chest just from the day. Everything was so nice and so fun, and easy. Jungkook was not what you were expecting, he probably wasnât what your friends thought either.Â
It would be just your luck to accidentally pick a really great guy.Â
Or so you hoped.Â
At that moment a buzz came from the table and you thought it came from your phone since Jin and Ronnie were blowing up your phone with reminders to stick to the plan. You glanced down and in an instant you wish you hadnât. You really wished you hadnât. Because the text did not come from your phone, it came from Jungkook's phone.Â
It wasnât a text from just a friend either.Â
You looked away as fast as you saw it but it immediately brought you back to reality.Â
Hey baby, are you free tonight? I really want to do that thing againâŚ
You really wished you hadnât looked. You didnât even register the name because you flipped Jungkook's phone over. For a moment, everything inside you froze. It felt like someone had just yanked you out of a dream, dropping you back into reality with a crash. The words, the suggestive toneâit wasnât just a friendly text. This was someone else, someone calling him âbaby,â someone who clearly thought they had plans with him tonight.
Because this is who he was, and why you set all those rules.
Of course Jungkook was texting another girl. Because that is the guy he is. He could be dreamy all day long but this was his nature. Not whatever façade he put on for your benefit today. For a second, your mind spun with questions: Who was she? What did they do? But no matter how many answers you wanted, one fact remained: this perfect day wasnât as perfect as it seemed.
Your waitress brought over the drinks you two had ordered. You sipped it so you could give your hands something to do. The disappointment swirled in your stomach for a moment before you pulled yourself together.Â
You were here for your own reasons.Â
That texted just proved why you picked Jungkook in the first place. He is a playboy, and you had a goal. Day one, twenty-nine more to go.Â
You spotted Jungkook returning to the table and he had a big smile on his face. You put back on a big smile yourself. Acting as if nothing had changed and nothing was different. You took a quick moment to send a quick text to Ronnie and Jin.Â
:Nevermind. You guys were right. I can do this.Â

I built a miniature Va11 Hall-A Bar inside of my PC!!
Va11 Hall-A PC Parts & Build list
PC:
CPU : Intel I9 14900k
GPU: Intel Arc A770 16gb
Ram: Corsair Dominator 64gb 5600
Mobo: Maxsun Terminator Z790 D5 wifi
Hard drives M.2: Samsung 990 pro 2tb, Samsung 970 evo plus 1tb, CT 1tb,                 Adata 500gb
PSU: ROG Thor 850 P2
Cables: Cablemod.com custom shortened and sleeved
Water loop distro : EKWB FLT 120 reservoir + D5 pump
Water loop cpu block: ThermalTake Pacific Mx2 UltraÂ
Water loop radiators: Alphacool HPE 20 x 2
Water loop hardware: 15 Alphacool, 3 EKWB, 2 Alphacool soft, 2 granzon  Â
Water loop tubes: EKWB Acrylic tube 14mm, Alphacool 13/10 soft
Air Cooling : ThermalTake Toughfan 120mm x 3Â + Controller
Air Cooling : Noctua 40mm pwm server fan x 2 (non visible)
Additional RGB Control : Coolermaster controller
Case:
Lian Li PC V600, left side mount, released in 2006, I acquired it in 2015 from PC Recycle in sodo Seattle.
I had to track down a new foot, one had been missing since I acquired the case (ebay)
Mods:These are the case mods I did personally
Cut a hole for the cpu mounts in the Motherboard mount plate as this case was designed for older hardwareÂ
Cut two 120mm blowholes and added aluminum covers (Dremel)
Cut Front and rear windows into side panels (Dremel Max)
Moved PSU from vertical placement in the lower right side of the case in front of the CPU to horizontal placement in the top left in old drive bays.Â
The PSU bracket had to be cut to show the OLED on the side.Â
Modded the side panel rail slide to accommodate the PSU, I used the original aluminum stand the psu was on, cut in half and epoxied with JB weld.Â
Changed and moved Power/ Reset switch to the back of the case, shortened and spliced the cable
I cut and bent my own 14mm acrylic tubes (hobby miter, heat gun).Â
Cut and made two way mirror for the front panel
Plastic "truss" is both functional and aesthetic. It came from a Gunpla accessory kit and has two cables passing through it and it acts as the GPU support. I could only get red and had to paint it.
Notice that some logos are missing/ covered, I dislike having a case as an advertisement. The Rog eye on the PSU is mostly covered but iykyk, most of the word "Intel" on the ARC GPU, Two of the Thermaltake logos on the fan edges, the Paint on the Thermaltake Mx2 Ultra and Maxsun terminator heatsink. (I will eventually cover the visible SSD with a heat sink, cover the fan info on the rear and work a cover for the word "dominator"). the one logo explicitly unchanged is the LianLi case badge, if I think of a perfect replacement, maybe then.
Mod I did not do:
I did NOT shorten and sleeve my own cables, I used cable-mod.com. I am not confident in my ability to do this.
BAR:
"Bar Tiny" Re-ment sets from Japan, 17 sets involved.Â
I customized the color of the bar and chairs and shortened one table for the mezzanine. The whole bar, minus barback- is on a removable 7 inch piece of black acrylic for cleaning.
Jill Stingray Nendoroid
Jils Cat, it sleeps on the GPU
Jill Stool: Jill is glued to a cute doll stool to see over the bar
Jill Accessories non-Nendoroid: cellphone, purse, coat (ebay)
Dorothy Haze Nendoroid
will be added on release.
Bar Back:I made this myself
Black acrylic sheet, and frosted acrylic rods.
Doll Light power kit: 8 Led lights, 4 incandescent lights
USB Doll light power strip
Other Bar Accessories:
Overhead Hanging farmhouse light
trash, mop, broom, pan, mop bucket,Â
2 blue fuzzy chairsÂ
Miniature plants
Miniature Microphone
Mini bottle Dom Perignon, an xmas gift from my friend nemo, it's
 on the top shelfÂ
Problems and changes:
1. ARGB, pretty pretty pain in the ass. 4 pieces of software........
2. The water loop was changed extensively as hardware came in and space limitations were discovered. The biggest change is that I originally planned to have one radiator on the front of the case, the tubes running over Jills head and to light the tubes as lighting for the bar, to do this the fan would have been in the case proper pushing the whole bar to far into the mobo, it didn't work, so the loop was moved to the top of the case and caused me to have one complex bent tubeÂ
Second, I had planned the loop to use one sideport on the distro, but space limitation moved both ports to the top causing the complex fittings setup in that corner. Â
3. The MOBO, sigh. This has been clearly the most challenging choice I made in this build, I really wanted it to work perfectly too, but I rolled those dice because: Aesthetic+function, the board I wanted (https://en.colorful.cn/en/home/product?mid=84&id=400d19bc-5655-49e1-b391-df00b60935ef) was to great a risk for the cost. This was a silver medal.Â
I generally dislike the design options I had in the Z790 series of the big board makers (I HATE big logos), especially the full ATX, there was one M that interested me, I should have picked it . This board has potential, but the BIOS is underdeveloped and compatibility has been problematic, I had to do a tricky outdated style BIOS update right from the box, and have had to reset the cmos a couple times. It skips BIOS on general boot and though stable, it will have to be addressed eventually, it doesn't have a proper sleep because of some issue between uefi & legacy. It may end up replaced, which will require a full build teardown.
the Turbo fan built into the board doesn't seem to function
Alos, the two argb connections on the mobo dont work, or I can't get them to recognize anything, necessitating the Coolermaster controller for the PSU and Distro. it is shoved behind the distro along with a Noctua 40mm

ARE Y'ALL READY FOR THIS THING I MADE THAT I WANNA MAKE YOU WATCH
*drum roll* My first traditionally 2d animated short is done (well. Done enough. Not perfect but it's just an informal practice thing so you know what it's fine for that) BEHOLD
Sound on for questionable quality keyboard noises
So yeah this is a little experiment I churned out in a month of neglecting other more important projects....it's supposed to be like.....the feeling of slumping into burnout and then the ups and downs of trying to get out of it? does it make sense...?
But yeah basically it's traditional animation - like ink and paint on cels and composited and scanned manually. More rambling under the cut. :)
I kinda made this bc it annoys me the mainstream has decided this is an obsolete art form and I'm protesty about it because IT'S ART IT DOESNT BECOME OBSOLETE JUST BC SOFTWARE EXISTS DO NOT PASS GO DO NOT COLLECT 200 DOLLARS.
I did cheat a little and digitally cut the water and copy-pasted it onto some frames but that's because I could find ONE TRANSPARENT BLUE SHEET IN THE ENTIRE METROPOLITAN AREA I KID YOU NOT. and I didn't want to cut my only precious water sheet in case something went wrong or I had to redo a shot. But everything else is pretty manual.
Also the music is op 76 no 2 by Sibelius - ATTEMPTED đ. Sorry some notes are just SO QUIET but it's good enough it's whatever. My level of piano skill is like. Not professional by any stretch of the imagination and this is about as good as I can do rn.
Oh and backgrounds are generally various kinds of charcoal with ink
anyway hope you at least found my project interesting thanks for watching
(actually not to make it weird but my whole life has led up to me trying this and I blame Joe Murray for making me want to be an animator when I was a little kid and I always wanted to try this kind and now I finally had the time and money and enough drawing skills to try it so yeah it's not like friggin Disney or whatever but I am happy I got to make it exist. feels like I checked a thing off my bucket list)
#Traditional animation#Cel animation#Burn out#Artists on tumblr#Piano music#Overly ambitious nonsense#'Hey ej why didn't you just have water on its own cels '#BECAUSE THIS SHIT IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MY ENGINEERING DEGREE AND I WILL BE UNABLE TO AFFORD MY MORTGAGE#Also as for the music it's Good Enough bc I had a few good runs and cobbled together the best bits and#I GUARANTEE YOU I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO PLAY IT WELL AGAIN THATS JUST HOW THIS GOES

Heard this morning (27 March, 2023) A transcript for this piece is not yet up. They're usually up in a couple of days.
~3 minute listen.
This one right-to-repair law got through in just one state, because the lawmaker who introduced it narrowed its focus down from "The right of everybody to repair anything" (too many businesses to lobby against that) to "the right of wheelchair users to repair their own wheelchairs."
On the one hand it's great. On the other hand, it's a reminder of how marginalized we are in society.
Next thing to fight for: the right of farmers to repair their own farm equipment.
One state's gotten started. Forty-nine to go...
Transcript is now up. I've put the full thing under the cut.
MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:
Somewhere on your list of life's annoyances is probably this - manufacturers who won't let customers fix products themselves. Some states are pushing back with right-to-repair laws. Andrew Kenney from Colorado Public Radio visited with one of the first people to use a new right-to-repair law for powered wheelchairs.
(SOUNDBITE OF WHEELCHAIR WHIRRING)
ANDREW KENNEY, BYLINE: Bruce Goguen, who's 68, has used his powered wheelchair for so long that it feels like an extension of himself. He has multiple sclerosis, which affects his speech.
BRUCE GOGUEN: I just think of it as legs, as being my legs.
KENNEY: And that means when he got a new chair last year, every detail had to be right, like the speed of its different modes. His wife, Robin Bolduc, says each one of those adjustments required a visit from an authorized technician. It took weeks.
ROBIN BOLDUC: We would have to call someone, make an appointment, have them come out and say, gee, I'd like to change it so we're walking just a little bit faster.
KENNEY: On one of those visits, Robin realized that the technician wasn't using some specialized device to change the settings. It was a smartphone app. She even found it on the App Store, but it was only available for authorized users.
BOLDUC: Well, I want the app. And he was like, you can't have the app. But I want the app.
KENNEY: That would've been the end of the road, except that Robin and Bruce knew that Colorado's new wheelchair right-to-repair to repair law had just gone into effect. Representative Brianna Titone is the sponsor of the new law. Back in 2021, she originally proposed a much broader bill that would've applied to computers, cellphones and more. That meant an uphill fight against lobbyists for everything from hospitals to tech giants.
BRIANNA TITONE: So I did not win that fight. I lost that fight pretty bad. So that's why the following year, we pared it back to the people who really deserve to have this right. And that were the people who were in wheelchairs.
TITONE: The narrower, wheelchair-focused law passed the legislature last year with the help of advocates like Bruce and Robin. Once it went into effect on New Year's Day, Robin called the manufacturer to demand access to their app.
BOLDUC: They were not prepared. Right. Which - understandably, we're the only state. And it was day one, right? So they were not prepared.
KENNEY: In a committee hearing last year, Tonya Hammatt of National Seating and Mobility, a wheelchair vendor, warned state lawmakers that power wheelchairs are too complex for DIY jobs.
(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)
TONYA HAMMATT: This bill will allow anyone to perform complex repairs to power wheelchairs, which may lead to negative outcomes for the end user.
KENNEY: But after Robin showed Bruce's wheelchair's maker the text of the law, they agreed, sending out two staffers to get the family set up with the internal software.
BOLDUC: They gave me the code to get into the app. We played around. We programmed.
KENNEY: The couple have been tweaking the wheelchair's different modes, searching for the perfect speed for Robin to jog alongside Bruce or the right settings for a steep walking trail.
GOGUEN: It's wonderful. It's very wonderful.
KENNEY: And their success could have broader effects. They've been told the manufacturer is working on a public-facing app for everyone else who wants to use it. The company didn't respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, right-to-repair laws are gaining momentum around the country, says Kevin O'Reilly of the advocacy group PIRG.
KEVIN O'REILLY: We think that this first bill was the crack in the dam that we needed.
KENNEY: That includes a new bill from Representative Titone that guarantees similar rights for farmers to repair their increasingly high-tech tractors and other equipment. It's poised to clear the state legislature in a matter of weeks. For NPR News, I'm Andrew Kenney.

hansooyung's coloring tutorial & ctiys: alma time! đ
hello everyone! though i've been meaning to for a while, i've finally gotten around to making my first manga coloring tutorial! i'll be going over cleaning panels and screentones, choosing base colors, and finally shading and lighting.
this will also be a color this in your style challenge, so if you're willing, feel free to post your colored panel and tag me in it!! i'd love to see all the results :)
find details under the cut! đŚ
DISCLAIMERS:
this is just how i personally color! i know for a fact that some of my other friends follow other methods and have such beautiful colorings <33
for colors specifically, i play around a LOT. if you don't like your color scheme for the time being, mess around with it! i don't use psds since i like to mess around by hand with color palettes, but maybe i'll look into it for the future.
i explain a lot just bear with me gang đ
TECHNICAL STUFF:
software: ibis paint x (on iphone). i use ibis since it is FREE for all phones and it worked on my chromebook as well.
while this tutorial is made for ibis paint x, everything works on other softwares except the brushes, which i've provided alternatives for below.
brushes: i will be using dip pen (hard) which is automatically included with ibis, and two other brushes i made myself which you can find here and here. for more brushes, @/bkdkdh was incredibly helpful and posted her awesome set here!
for other softwares, you can use similar brushes. dip pen (hard) can just be the default brush, while wet edges is just the default brush on lowered opacity (and more of a rectangle/marker shape?). watercolor pencil is a watercolor brush in the rectangle/marker shape as well. if you can't get the shape, you can always smudge your lines into shape as well, so don't fret too much! a bunch of people only use one brush for coloring everything (which is insane to me, personally, they are so talented!)
fun fact: the first brush listed that i made was originally called "aki tao watercolor smooth" đ
ok here we go guys!!
STEP ONE: CLEANING THE PANEL
i think of this part as setting up the panel for coloring! usually it's pretty exhausting cuz it's all b&w but it's all worth it i swear. the panel i'll be coloring is this beautiful one of alma from chapter 2:
imgur link here (x)
a lot of people redraw their lines to avoid screentones, which is extremely helpful. however, i work on a phone and my fingers are not steady even with the stabilizer turned all the way up T~T. i do it this way, but a different (possibly easier) way may work for you!!!
your first step will be to remove all the white, giving us a transparent background to work with. THIS IS THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY I USE IBIS PAINT X.
when you upload the image to ibis, a popup comes asking if you would like to "extract line drawing". this creates a lineart of your image. click yes, and your work is like 90% done.
if you're not on ibis, you can redraw your panel, put lineart layer on screen, etc. or you can just extract line drawing from ibis and upload to software of your choice
for those of you not on ibis, i've included the line drawing here (x) if it looks black, don't worry and set your background to white.
omg i was not kidding when i said i explained a lot. ok now onto the three main steps of cleaning the panel:
cleaning background
removing screentones
repainting black lines
for cleaning the background, we're going to clear off all the extraneous stuff. this includes the text in the speech bubble, the gradient screentones behind alma, and the panel line on the left side. just use your eraser tool and go crazy! (i forgot to save the panel at this point of the coloring OTL)
for removing screentones, we're going to remove all those "dots" that mangakas use for shading. these are used to show value for b&w art, but since we're coloring we don't need themâa lot of people have really cool ways of incorporating screentones in their colorings though, and it looks amazing! i used it on nana's hand in my bnha coloring.
remove the screentones from alma's hair and jacket with your eraser tool. this will take time, but it's worth it in the end!
for portions with a bunch of lines, you can create A NEW LAYER and redraw some of the lines. that way, you can erase indiscriminately from the original layer but the lines you drew are still there. again, like i said, my hand is really shaky so i don't do it a lot, but it's extremely helpful for smaller parts where i have control! i used this on alma's jacket, and here's a screenshot of the process:
(i made his jacket purple so i could distinguish between layers easily).
it should look like this when you're done:
for the final step of cleaning, i like to erase all the things colored black (the collar and strings of the jacket, along with the back part of his hair). that way, i can color them in with dark colors and it adds to the whole look of the coloring.
i've circled the parts i'm going to erase below:
and it should look like this when you're done!
ok everyone cheer we're ready to color now!!!!
STEP TWO: BASE COLORS
CROWD CHEERS ok lets go!
this part is the most important to me, because it sets the tone for the whole coloring. i like to use three-four main colors in my colorings, and it's usually background, skintone, hair, and the secret fourth color. the secret fourth color is usually whatever color fits the character's vibe, or if the character's color is the bg, it'll be an accent color.
for example, with my nagi coloring, i used white for the hair, i had my skintone, i had blue as the main coloring vibe (as nagi's color), and black as the accent color.
for alma, i chose his main color to be red! it's the color of his hair and his jacket, so i wanted it to be vibrant and stand out. since blue contrasts red, i went for a greyish-blue shade for the background. (i went for grey rather than solely blue because then it would clash rather than complement).
disclaimer please please please take your device off night mode warm mode f.lux whatever you have. this has screwed me over more times than you may think :(
i like to make my vibrant colors closer to the right end of the color square. for alma's hair, i chose this color:
i dragged it down from the corner a bit but kept the saturation since his hair is kind of dark. we can use vibrant colors to shade it though, so don't worry!
here's his hair and the background together:
now from here, play around with skintones until you find one that matches the hair!
i usually drag around the wheel to the orange-red intersection, and have it on the lighter, more saturated side. here's the color i chose for alma's skintone.
i thought his original skintone looked a bit too orange, so i pulled the saturation back a little bit (moved closer to the left side of the square).
after that, color in his jacket with a bit darker red than hair, choose a gold color for the accents on his jacket, and color in the black parts with a grey-ish color (we will change that later).
here's the base colors!
if it looks a bit bright, don't worry! we can change that with shading. or you might just have to. accept the light.
STEP THREE: SHADING AND LIGHTING
wooo we made it!!!!!!! ok now i lied, we have a bit more of base colors to go. on a layer above the skin, color in your teeth and tongue. for pieces that have a more red feel (like this one), i like to make the teeth and the shading a more vibrant blue color. (for blue pieces, i make it a purple!).
IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL SHADING AND ALL COLORS SHOULD BE DONE ON NEW, CLIPPED LAYER.
i'll then go in and do some light shading with my wet edges brush. i'll use a darker color for hard shadows and then a lighter, more vibrant color to accentuate it.
next up we have blush! a lot of people do this in very different ways but i like to do it directly under the eyes, in a vibrant red shade. make a new layer above the skin and clip it on. color pick alma's hair and drag it to the most saturated shade (red corner). then using the watercolor pencil brush, lower the opacity of the brush and drag a line under the eyes on both sides.
make sure to erase the portion of blush that goes above the eyeline. i also added some lips for alma as you can see, and then added a red line under the eyes! this was back to the regular dip pen (hard) brush on 100% opacity. it may take a few tries to get your blush to the way you want it, so don't worry too much.
now we can start our actual shading!
i break this part up into three steps: skin shading, blue shading, and light shading (highlights?)
for all of them, think about where the light is falling and how it will look on alma.
quick interlude about brushes: i use the watercolor pencil brush for softer, bouncy looks (like blush and noses) and i use the wet edges brush for more hard lines in shading.
again, make a new layer above the skin and clip it on. (i like to have it below the blush, so it doesn't cover it). for skin shading, i take the vibrant red and lower the opacity of the wet edges brush by a significant amount (specifics don't really matter, as long as you're happy with it). i'll trace his neck, from the shadow of his face, shadows of his hair falling on his face, ears, and nose. (for the nose i used the watercolor pencil brush for a softer look).
this is what i have once i'm done!
next we have skin shading part two, where we basically make a new layer on top of our first shading, lower the opacity further, and trace outside whatever we just did to blend it in more.
i used the watercolor pencil brush since it's more softer shading meant for blending! i also added it around the eyebrows for depth.
next up we have our blue shading! this is a technique that i learned from @/bkdkdh's colorings, but adding blue as a shadow really adds to the whole coloring. using the watercolor pencil brush, select a light-ish blue shade (a bit more saturated than background color) and use it to shadow a few more areas than your skin shading. i always make sure to hit the underside of the nose, cuz i think it adds depth!
finally, to wrap up our skin shading we have our lights. i use an orange-ish yellow color, which i set pretty light to not blend into the skin. using the watercolor pencil brush, i'll basically highlight any areas opposite to where the blue was, and highlight different parts. i always highlight one side of the nose as well.
i erased the line around the nose since we now have shading there, and added a darker shade to the teeth since i felt it wasn't shaded enough.
now onto the hair!!! (guys we're almost done bear with me, skin and hair are the two main things and then you can half-ass the clothes)
color pick alma's hair color, then drag the red a bit further down to get a darker yet still saturated color. here's mine:
then, using the wet edges brush, draw lines of shadow wherever clumps of his hair fall or overlap with each other. you can have the opacity set to whatever level you want, i just went with around 90. just try to follow the natural lines and patterns of the original line drawing, and everything should work out fine.
here's how mine looks! then, just like we did for skin shading, place a layer on top and lower the opacity to around 50%. place some more shading to blend it in. you can also shade more parts with this shade for some softer shading. i actually forgot to take a screenshot of this step but you'll see it in the next one!
for our (almost) last part of hair shading, take a layer and place it below both of your shading layers. this is going to be our highlight layer! you can see it below, labeled 49%.
remember how we set alma's hair a bit darker from the corner color? now select that corner color and draw highlights in the center of each hair clump.
lightly visible but it's there!
now here i skipped around a bit bc i was having fun and forgot i was doing a tutorial, but repeat the shading (not highlighting) steps with darker colors for alma's jacket. you should have your base layer, a dark shading, and a softer shading for blending.
we're almost there guys!!!
for the pretty much final step of shading, select a light blue color and do some blue shading with the watercolor pencil brush opposite to wherever your darker shading falls (just like we did on the face). make sure to do it to both your hair and your jacket! here's mine:
now for the black portions, we're going to color the whole thing in a dark blue color. just alpha lock your layer and make a big stroke of dark blue, almost black. for our black shading, we're actually going to go lighter.
select a lighter (but still dark) color and place highlights on the base layer, then take an even more vibrant, lighter blue and place it on the very outside for highlights. a better example of this would be nagi's legs in his blue lock uniform here. then, choose a shade to apply shading to the gold accents on alma's jacket and we're done!
CROWD CHEERS!!!!!
STEP FOUR: FINISHING TOUCHES
we made it guys!!!! for finishing touches, i'll usually do background effects or text or that kind of stuff.
step one is coloring your lines. you can add a new layer and clip it to your lineart, or simply alpha lock your lineart and color directly on top. for hair i like to add vibrant blue/purple lines, along with a few red ones. for skin lines i try to do dark brownish purples, but leaving some black is good too bc it adds flavor!
i colored in the text boxes and added shadows using the wet edge feature, then added some text. for the glitch effect, i duplicated the lineart, dragged the layer below all of my colors (including speech bubbles) and then used the glitch effect with height full from ibis. if you don't have ibis, you can look into features on your software, or you can also just drag your lineart layer a bit to either side and color it in. i also applied just the tiniest bit of noise on top of everything
and there we go!!!!! we made it to the end :)
if you've read all the way til here, thank you so much! if you decide to color this panel of alma (or any other panels!) don't be afraid to post them and tag me for a color this in your style type of thing! (you can also put it in my tracked tag, #user.roy) i'd love to see everyone's works :)
here's the full timelapse: (it stalls for a bit at some times but hey we can't have everything)

Alright, listen up:
We need to stop with the anti-rooting attitude for brainpals, alright? You're just doing mnemonocorps job for them. Cut out the discourse about people with modded brainpals, for TF's sake.
(scifi worldbuilding by way of fictional Tumblr discourse under the cut)
There's tons of valid reasons for by people would hack their brainpals! Testing new memory/skills without paying for a dev kit, piracy of skills (and do not @ me with that "but you're stealing from the original skill creator!" bullshit. All the legit skills on the market now are from people who did work for hire by mnemonocorps, and THEY ALREADY WERE PAID. It's only mnemonocorps that is losing money!), home ptsd/cptsd/jptsd treatment, the list is endless.
And before you jump into the comments, YES I KNOW PEOPLE DO SEXUAL MEMORY PLAY. People do every kind of weird shit, name me a technology that no one has used for sex in some way? Hell, the first topless photo was taken within a week of the invention of the daguerreotype. But we need to be adults here, okay? These things can be simultaneously true:
1. People do memory play
2. No kids have memorypals
3. The vast major of memory play is NOT VP.
Mnemonocorps has done a lot of work to try to keep people from using brainpals for memory pal, with their artificial limits on how much you can block at once, but that's fundamentally an over reaction to the negative press from the whole VP scandal. The news loves a juicy story like "people are using a new technology for weird sex shit" because their readers/viewers are always interested in Weird Sex Shit, either because "ooh, sexy!" or "BAN THIS FILTH" reactions.
And like all big companies, the last thing mnemonocorps wants is a new law aimed specifically at regulating them! So they stuck a bunch more restrictions on brainpals so they could say they have taken steps to prevent VP.
Now, I need you to listen to me before I say this: I am NOT saying I condone VP, alright? I'm not going like "oh but no one is hurt, everyone is (technically) adults, it's basically roleplay"? This is not an excuse for VP, alright?
Memory play is not just VP, and it's deeply insulting to everyone who engages in memory play to conflate the two!
The reasons people would do memory play are many and varied, as are the things that people do with memory play. And I think people are extra quick to jump on the "memory play is bad" bandwagon not just because of the spectre of VP, but because it's all "eww, kinky sex things".
And yes, I'm not going to try to sugarcoat memory play, alright? There's a lot of weird stuff going on there, and it definitely isn't for everyone. But the thing y'all need to keep in mind is that it's between consensual adults and they (usually*) know what they're doing, okay?
It's safe and mind healthy and consensual. (yes I know these are the same arguments the veepers use to definite VP but I'm not talking about VP here, damn it!).
People can do CNC play with mblocks. People can do roleplay with temporary personality patches, either because they're too awkward/shy/whatever to have sex or because they (or their partners) want to do some vcheating. All these are perfectly safe if done correctly and don't hurt anyone. Especially not you, who aren't even involved in their memory play!
And I promise the slippery slope argument is bullshit: even if people use mblocks to age regress, that doesn't make it VP, alright? There's plenty of people (especially us elderly trans who missed out on a gender-correct early adulthood. (I wasn't able to get genespliced until I was nearly 60!). If I want to experience how my 25-year-old self would have had sex as a girl, that's my own god damn business! And it's not VP and it hurts no one. And all these non-vp uses of memory play are completely blocked by the stock brainpal software, because of their heavy handed approach to trying to prevent VP.
But with this whole stigma against hacking brainpals means that if I ever even mention I've got mine modded, people immediately start side-eying me because they think the only reason anyone would want to hack their brainpal is VP.
No! Piracy of skills and mblocks and yes, memory play. Which isn't entirely VP, even if it keeps getting tarred with that brush.
The piracy argument you'd think would be an easier one to make. I know half of you have all the PS6 ROMs downloaded onto your tangles. How are you gonna steal half the video games on the iarchive and then turn around and say it's wrong to download fluent-Japanese or woodworking to your brainpal? Come on.
Basically my whole point is that mnemonocorps has done a great job convincing the general public to associate illicit (by their rules) brainpal use with VP, and it's solely because they know the average person (rightly, I would add) thinks VP is abhorrent. They're using that disgust to turn the general opinion against the idea of brainpal modding.
And look, look me in my eye, do you really think mnemonocorps is doing this because they genuinely think VP is bad and want the public to help them stop it by shunning people who hack their brainpals? Or is it, just maybe, because they don't want to lose trillions of n$ on skill piracy? And they're just using VP as an excuse?
It's like, come on gals. No one ever went broke assuming companies are acting out of the most basic capitalistic greed, because THEY ALWAYS ARE.
And don't get me started on the people clitriding mnemonocorps for inventing the brainpal in the first place. Look, we all love the brainpal, yes, but it's not like you owe them endless loyalty over it, okay? They can and have done wrong in the past. Accept that you can love the work and hate the company trying to control it.
(it's like: is Thomas Chellae an abusive asshole who should not be out of crimrehab? Yes of course, no question. Is Shadowed Skies the best album of the last 30 years? Also yes! It can be both! Bad people can make good things)
Anyway: end of the day, stop bringing up VP every time anything involving brainpal modding comes up. Don't judge people for modding their brainpals.
(especially since half the problem people have with memory play isn't VP, it's just y'all being antisex. Which is bullshit given how many people subscribe to those "expert oral sex" skills! You're using your brainpal to have better sex, then turning around and going "but I'd never use it for WEIRD sex!". Grow TF the fuck up!)
Also, just because I know someone would bring it up, the whole mind control thing is A MYTH. There have never been any legitimate cases of people getting hacked through their brainpals, hacked or not, okay? I mean, who knows what the nsa or uhsa can do, but no one has ever been able to demonstrate a remote hack on a brainpal. Anyone being "mind controlled" through their brainpal did it to themselves, either with a ppatch or intentionally routing their admin to someone else. "you'll get hacked and turned into a bpZombie!" is a bullshit reason to be against brainpal hacking: it simply does not happen. I used to be a rengineer, I've looked into the brainpal security: it's well done!
* Yeah, Adrian Reach was a tragic case, but it was definitely a million-to-one case. Make your backups, run the ccheck, and don't try to mblock your whole damn life on a failing bp! You'll be fine.
EDIT: I forgot to elaborate on the "no kids have brainpals" thing: yes, I know there are some kids who do have them, BUT they're not the same as regular brainpal installs. They're only done in some extreme cases of mental distress (like survivors of the cWar) and they're locked down. Only their doctor can adjust them, it's not like regular consumer brainpals where you can just fiddle with the settings themselves. So all this memory play stuff we're talking about is only between adults. REAL adults, alright? Even when people are doing VP, everyone involved is of age.
