Development of the RMN Series

A recent ask got me thinking about how I developed my set of Robot Masters over the years, which ones were made earliest, which ones came later, design elements that changed over time, etc. So figured I could compile some of that here.

High School Era

The earliest one I made was Vegas Man. I've always had a bit of a fascination with playing cards, so I wanted to theme a Robot Master around that sort of idea, I definitely wanted to make card suits part of his design (I don't think I'd seen RM&B by that point, so I was unfamiliar with Magic Man). His design changed a bit over time, gaining some slight western theming, as well as a change to his weapon, the Casino Shield. The earliest version was an actual physical circular shield he wore on one arm, designed to look like a roulette wheel.

Next up was Bow Man. I think I was somewhat inspired by RMs like Knight Man and Yamato Man that were equipped with solid "real" weapons. Sword Man might have been on the list by that point as well, come to think of it. I figured an archer robot could fit right in. My mind immediately went to Robin Hood as a design base, an overall medieval look. It took some time to come up with a design that carried that feel but looked "robot armor" enough, but I'm fairly pleased with the current iteration.

Third in order was a very early version of Glass Man. I had the overall design elements, and solid idea of how I wanted his weapon, the Shatter Shard, to work. Earlier versions were more solidly based on more colorful stained glass, but I could never really come up with a solid design that I liked, they all just came out looking too complicated or just an overall shape I didn't like. As such, design for him kind of sat on the bench for awhile.

Fourth was Met Man. This one seemed like an obvious design to go for, as I always liked the Met / Metool / Metall enemies from the series, a longtime favorite. His design is probably the overall least changed from conception to current iteration. Earlier designs had the usual line and + mark on his shoulder pad "helmets" as well. The artist who drew the usual reference art I show for my RMs, Alex, drew him without those markings on the shoulders, and honestly I think that looks better, less cluttered. (I know I just recently posted his art of my RMs, but I put it up above at the start of this post for easy reference, and hey, I love the art and was honored to receive it, so I like showing it off, haha) I think the biggest change Met Man got was getting armed with a pickaxe, a design that came about when I started getting into the MMBN series and wanted to get a bit of Mettaur virus design in there.

College Era

While at Full Sail, my habit of doodling in the margins of my notes continued, and along the way, more custom RMs were born.

Fifth up and starting this period was Devil Man. I wanted a fiery volcano stage, but wanted to go with a less standard fire based idea. I had the idea of an RM using a grappling hook to get around the dangerous volcanic tunnels, and that idea ended up taking the form of a sharp, pointed devil-style tail. I didn't really have a solid personality in mind for him, though the actual visual design came along fairly quickly. Alex again gave me something that I adopted as canon for this RM, in his drawing of Devil Man, he was depicted "throwing the horns," so now I imagine him to be a major metalhead, headbanging on the job as he listens to his favorite heavy metal music.

Sixth in line was Origami Man. Origami is an art form I always liked, my mum had a lot of books on the subject, with step by step instructions for various creations. I knew I wanted to do something with that. The overall design gave me trouble, figuring out something that truly looked like origami armor. The pallet was something else that gave me trouble, but in the end, I opted for a softer pastel pallet, largely for some visual contrast from other RMs I had, a good number of which were already on the warmer side of colors.

This was also the period of time where I largely had Vegas Man's finalized design pretty much down, as well as the redesign of his weapon.

YouTube Era

For lack of a better term of time frame, I didn't really think too much about my custom RMs for awhile after Full Sail, until I had started making videos on YouTube and hanging out with various friends. One conversation with a group of people I used to hang out with involved the idea for a Mega Man fangame, and so, we set to designing RMs. While I did think of my older designs, I also decided "why not try making some new ones?"

Seventh on the list was Fruit Man. Our overall designs for the RMs for this game were more on the silly side, so I decided to go wild with his design, making him a mascot character for an orchard, and thus fully theming him on various colorful fruits. In keeping with the sillier ideas, I made his weapon a pun, the Pineapple Grenade.

The eighth and final design was Disco Man, or as he was originally dubbed, Groove Man. His original design was a bit less solidly themed on one genre of music, instead he was sort of build like an entertainment system featuring tape decks, a CD slot, speakers, etc. I was playing around with visual designs for the head, and the one I ended up liking most had a sort of disco ball afro design. Thus, he started leaning more toward a Disco design, with the disco ball motif migrating to his shoulders, the mixtape taking over his chest, chill shades, platform boots, and a more refined afro design. What can I say, I'm a sucker for disco aesthetic (bring back Miror B. you cowards).

This was also around the time I finally came up with a solid visual design that I liked for Glass Man, and thus, the family was complete.

The Mystery 9th Robot Master...

Technically speaking, back in the High School era, I did have one more RM I had been working on. In true order, he was the fifth design I was working on. His name was Quartz Man. He was going to be a time based RM, armed (literally) with a wristwatch device that gave him time control abilities. However, it was a case where a) I couldn't come up with a visual design I liked enough, and b) I couldn't really think of a solid way to give him time powers that felt unique enough. I think about the only solid part of his design aside from the watch was I think I wanted him to have glasses, I felt it would give him a sharper, more "intelligent" look. I think I had it in mind that he was sort of a strategist type, using his time powers in clever ways to gain the advantage. (EDIT : One further detail I remembered was his color pallet, I wanted him to have at least some sort of bright teal-ish green in reference to the "glow" function of digital watches.)

And so, that basically wraps up the ol' design process I went through over time for the RMN series. Hope you enjoyed this bit of personal history.

Music Overload In Music City

We hit Robert’s Western World on Lower Broadway late Saturday for much drinking into the small hours and dancing to *Brandon Birkedahl and the Beer Joint Jumpers*. I sat next to two older ladies from Indiana who said they were here from 11am to 2am every day they were in Nashville. They were still hopping when we left and, lo and behold, they were in the same seats at noon the next day for Sunday morning Gospel music. May the Lord be praised!

The Ryman Auditorium was built as a Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892 and still stands with the same sturdy wooden pews. For 30 years it was the home of the Grand Ole Opry, then abandoned, and now restored as a first class music venue; massive solid pews included. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit played their last show of the year and went out with a bang. Just a brilliant talent and wonderful show in every way.

The Grand Ole Opry moved to a newer and bigger venue in the 70s but still maintained the wooden pews - now with padding thankfully - for 4000 people attending the live radio broadcasts on WSM Radio. The show this week was headlined by Vince Gill and included six other artists that I had never heard of but now love completely. Rhonda Vincent and her bluegrass band, Thompson Square and Drew Holcomb are contemporary groups with beautiful heartbreaking voices. Whispering Bill Anderson first performed at the Opry in 1959 and at 86 years old was still crooning to a standing ovation this week.

I really loved Don Schlitz and I was certainly the only person in the audience that did know that he wrote the classic lines “You gotta know when to fold ‘em, Know when to hold ‘em, Know when to walk away, Know when to run”. Every country song is a life lesson to be learned and Vince Gill owned the Opry with “Which bridge to cross and which bridge to burn”. Marvelous evening.

Along with all this, Nashville is home to Gibson Guitars and the Gibson Garage is their showcase showroom that has every guitar they make circulating above the customers; just pick one up and play all day.

And no guitar visit would be complete without lunch at *Arnold’s Meat and Three* cafeteria style restaurant and Carter Vintage Guitar across the street. Literally a shed load of guitars ready to be picked up and picked without any hovering sales people. I went in with a somewhat specific interest in a Gibson Dove as my first ever guitar was a Japanese copy and I wanted a real one because … nostalgia. No other reason. I ended up playing over 20 guitars, wanting to buy half a dozen, and left empty handed, giddy, and confused.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics Equestrian Update By Western World Saddlery Clothing Equipment Caboolture

The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics is set to be HOT, HOT, HOT for all concerned – but horses may suffer the most 

The Ready Steady Tokyo test equestrian event in August went down a treat with past Olympian winner Michael Jung and other contestants, but participants’ concerns about the heat and humidity didn’t go unnoticed. Melissa Gibson, co-owner of Australia’s leading country outfitters, Western World Saddlery and Saddleworld Caboolture, explains the effects of extreme temperatures on horses and what counter-measures can be expected at next year’s summer Games. 

Acting as a dress rehearsal to the real McCoy, many of the world’s top riders jumped at the opportunity to sound out facilities at two venues, Sea Forest Cross-Country Course and the recently refurbished Equestrian Park at Baji Koen. By all accounts, the event was a rip-roaring success. 

Set in a spectacular public green space in the city’s Heritage Zone, the latter is one of many original 1964 venues revamped for 2020, in line with the city’s commitment to a 50% pre-existing venues quota. The cross country course runs over reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay and was created by acclaimed US course designer, Derek di Grazia. 

“Everybody, from gold medal winner Jung to the spectators, only had positive things to say about the facilities and courses, but there were concerns about the hot weather and its effect on horses and riders,” Melissa says. “While 1964’s Games were held mid-October during autumn, next year’s event starts at the end of July – and it will probably be brutal.”

While the organisers have been taking advice from other hot host cities like  Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008), Japan’s recent record-breaking temperatures, and 57 heat-related deaths in the country from 29 July to 4 August this year must be keeping them up at night. Although measures to battle the heat in Olympic equestrian competition is nothing new, and water misters were first seen in 1996 at Atlanta, there’s no doubt that temperatures, and concerns, have risen. 

Cooling down measures evaluated at a beach volleyball event in July include mist sprays, shaded resting areas and ice packs for spectators. Organisers also believe resin-based, infrared-reflecting paving for the 42 km marathon course and other major roads will lower the surface temperature by as much as 8˚ C. 

Keeping the roughly 200 animals taking part in the Olympics cool is critical, as a rider could be forced to retire due to the condition of a horse. After completing the cross-country section, or instance, the heart rate, body temperature and other vitals of the horse are checked. It is not uncommon for even top riders to be eliminated from the competition at this stage.

 “Horses are up there with humans as one of the sweatiest in the animal kingdom, and like us, show signs of heat exhaustion. Their body temperature is roughly two degrees higher than ours, but a tough 6km cross-country course can push it beyond 40˚ C,” she explains. “

They will have to work hard on the course and in the arena, but back at the (air-conditioned) stables, competing horses can expect nothing less than state-of-the-art, and will have every resource and technology thrown at making their stay as comfortable as possible. “There were no complaints about the horses’ facilities, Melissa laughs. “The riders will have to make do with much less lavish accommodation at the athlete’s village.” 

Events are scheduled to avoid the midday sun and high humidity, either early morning or in the evening, with cross-country starting at 8.30 am. Also planned for Tokyo 2020 is the installation of large tents with giant fans and water misters to create a workable environment for horses and riders.

Melissa feels it would be a shame if the stunning facelift the 1964 Equestrian Centre was given and the beauty of the bay-side cross-country route is overshadowed by unbearable conditions. “The world has certainly become a hotter place in the last 20-odd years,” she notes, “But the organisers realise this and seem to have upped the game.”

There's nuances here I wanted to address - yes, this is tangential. "there's nothing wrong with having realistic-looking women (and men) in fiction" They don't sell as well.

If you are trying to sell a product, and the characters look like this, you will not get as many people to buy as ...

That's just reality. Note, in both cases, these are as realistic as humanly possible, since they are both real. At best, you can claim her figure is from implants.

But there are women with large natural breasts, and I remember an artist on here drawing a lass who looked like

And when that was denounced as "unrealistic", the artist pointed out she had just used photographs of herself as the reference. Women do not range from A to B cups, and it does seem like the SJWs of the world are actually jealous of the competition.

I can't help but notice that far more women pad their bras than flatten their boobs, despite decades of feminist propaganda. Most women are straight, most women like to be lusted after by men, boobs hips and butts do the job, and lesbians tend to like them too.

Despite everything Feminists have said since the 1960s, when given a choice, most bisexual and lesbian women choose the same body types for women as straight men, presumably because the same area of the brain is making the choices.

Honestly, your slowly regretting giving Jin and Tae free reign with decorations because that shits annoying as all hell!

Not that Jimin’s not equally as good of company as well, you were honestly just expecting Tae! The two of you were starting to put together the gift bags for next week's holiday party! Everything from Amazon to Saks Fifth, at this point you aren’t even sure where the fuck your floor starts or ends! It’s become a tradition, or at least since the companies been profitable enough to do so! First off, you’re love language has always been a combination of “Gifts” and “Acts of service, so shit like this is essentially second nature!

However, quality time has slowly slipped its way into the mix over the past couple of years as well! Especially considering it’s almost a luxury for the seven of you at this point but you try not to complain! I mean Namjoon and yourself just did an interview last week for Forbes 30 under 30 for fucks sake! But anyway, like I was originally saying this little party is your way of trying to give your staff a combination of all 3 said love languages!

Above everything else you all work your asses off well, aware this is far from a 9-5, yet they give you their best constantly! Yeah, it was built on the backs of you and your boys but it wouldn’t be were it is now without everyone else! So, with that being said the schedule is as follows! 

1.Bust ass and hit all of your year end deadlines by December 22nd. 

2.The holiday party is on the 23rd...

3. Thennnnnn....after that the companies closed until the 2nd of January! 

Well kinda, if we’re being real the 7 of you never fully stop working, but you damn sure plan to try! I guess it’s the beauty and the curse of having damn near everything accessible on your phone! I swear this morning Joon was washing your back whilst you read him the latest profit/loss update from Jin soooo......that’s that!

Everyone else however....off duty with pay!

Which brings us back to the original task at hand before Jimin showed up,prepping the gift bags that get handed out at said holiday party! The invite list is pretty exclusive honestly,outside of your staff, and there plus one, the other guests are typically the immediate crew/ talent used throughout the year on various productions! Oh, there’s also special little packages mailed out to a couple of the company's sponsors as well! So all together were looking at at least 100 gift bags give or take! Of course at this stage you guys go all out but that’s not what it’s about! It’s legitimately the thought that counts!

Little gestures like this just remind people that you care,that they’re on your mind even if they aren’t currently doing you a favor! That’s what sets Onyx apart, all the little things you do without even thinking about it! Coffee, donuts, catering on set for long shoots,or even the little kits Jimin brings with him to set for the models! Fully stocked with soothing cream, heating pads, the full nine! It’s actually sad how much of a rarity it is in your line of work! 

Obviously, it goes without saying that those types of gestures aren’t feasible for everyone....However there’s companies worth more than you that do amples less!

But anyway back to Jimin and Tae! As I mentioned when the door originally opened you were expecting a mop of silver locks as opposed to red! Baby boy ran out to pick up the custom gift bags from this Indie vendor in WeHo. Hint’s why you were expecting Tae instead, now, why Jimins here I have no damn idea! Clearly we’re about to find out and apparently it’s “Some Bullshit!”

Honestly outside of checking his OOTD you didn't truly look at him. Far too busy propped on top of your oversized dining room table sorting through a manusery of  “Thank you” cards!

Jimin’s hand is now resting on his hip, legitimately angry about these damn decorations! I think his neck even did a couple rolls in the process, and I’m willing to bet,before he leaves they will be swapped out again!

A frustrated groan attempts to leave your throat  though it goes unacknowledged as your lacking any ounce or bite! Far too fond of both of your boys to truly be agitated at the moment! Actually that’s a lie, you high key wanna punch Jimin but it’s fine ....

The feeling of that tiny piece of metal playing in his mouth almost distracted you, but alas...the notion immediately reminds you why you were irked to begin with! Without even thinking you lean back into nipping at his bottom lip, though...this is Jimin we’re dealing with here! So whatever you thought you’d achieve is now dead, because a needy little whine just rustled in the back of his throat

The sun had soared nearly to the zenith. No sane creature would venture out into the blaze of it. Even the lizards and scorpions sought the shade. Derkhan-in-the-Desert slept in the midst of the desert of Skrald Iden, scorching in the sun. A caravan crept toward her across baking stones and sand from the western desert.

The slow pacing of the dromedaries brought the caravan at last to the Gate of the Setting Sun. The guards left off their lazing in the shade of the square brick gate towers. They stepped forth in steel caps and padded cotton armor; being careful to stay in the shade themselves, they barred the way with their pikes. Stopping men and beasts in the sun, they haughtily demanded to know what the caravan’s business was.

The Master, tall, with piercing brown eyes and a swarthy complexion more suited to the climes of the jungles about the Central Seas, out of place in his desert burnoose, answered for all, as was the custom. He had a coffer brought and from it paid their Gate toll, plus a moderate bribe. Even honest guards must buy drink. 

The file of men in burnooses and camels with red and gold fringed lead ropes passed within the Gate of the Setting Sun and thence, up Imperial Way. They passed houses that showed only whitewashed brick walls and doors with ventilation gaps at top and bottom. At the center of town, they came to the market place. It was empty of course. It was midday.

For all that there were seven camels and nine men, they set up but one booth. This had an awning of purple and gold stripes, each as wide as a hand, and a scalloped fringe of silver. The poles were curiously carven ebony inlaid with ivory. A well worn counting board, polished smooth by much use, was set up at the front of the booth and the heavy chests of goods were at the back, watched by a vigilant caravaner.

One of the caravaners returned from the errand set him by the Master. He bore meat, bread, dried fruits, nuts and cheese for their repast. On his back he bore a large leather skin of water.

“Master, the food was high, as expected, but the water was more than dear,” he reported.

“Their water is more dear than they know,” the Mast,jjher retorted. “My brother could not meet their price and they would sell him none. Seven years ago, this day, he perished of thirst in the Skrald Iden for want of it.”

As the sun westered and the heat began to fade, hawk-like merchants and their prey of shoppers began to emerge. Everyone stared in wonder at the opulent booth. None dared approach until Harin, the greatest merchant prince of the city, arrogantly swaggered up and sat by the counting board on the rich rug. He arranged his pantaloons carefully on a cushion supplied by one of his servants and straightened his gold brocaded vest.

“Fine display oft hides shoddy goods,” he quoted the desert proverb. “Let me see the best that you have.”

“For you, oh fount of wisdom, we shall show our poor best,” rejoined the caravan Master with a small smile. He made a curious circular gesture and one of his henchmen brought forth an array of brocade-wrapped objects, each about the size of a fist.

With much ceremony, these were unveiled. There on the counting board stood revealed a number of small stone figures. The statues represented small ape-like beings of several sorts, such as are found in the jungles of the lands about the Central Seas. There were also men and maidens of surpassing beauty. So real was the workmanship that one might have expected them to begin moving at any moment.

They were shaped from carnelian agate with the glowing reds and rich golden browns of a desert sunset and superbly detailed. Each one was a separate work of genius. Unique.

Impressed, despite his expression, Harin declared, “I ask to see your merchandise and you bring out your gods. Are then, your gods for sale?”

“Indeed not, yet these carvings are. They are the work of my people. As you can see, we excel at the working of stone. For seven years, myself and my people have labored over these to bring you that which you deserve,” said the Master unctuously.

Following the custom of the bargain, the Master spread a Damask cloth, richly figured with the patterns of sigils in pale blue on darkest blue, on the counting board and placed his hands beneath the cloth.

Harin, also, put his hands under the cloth. His fingers felt the offer of the Master and promptly made a counter offer. Flying fingers did battle below the figured fabric. Golden djals and djabalas of silver were the hostages offered, refused, and finally taken in the combat of the bargain.

Harin gestured arrogantly and a sycophant produced stylus and wax tablet-book. A few lines were hastily scrawled in the wax and the tablet sealed. A swift runner was sent to Harin’s counting house. A short time later, he returned with a pouch of coins. These were laid out on the counting board. Weights were checked to be sure that the coins were unclipped, and finally they were accepted.

Harin̓s toadies gathered up the carnelian carvings and left to deliver them to his counting house. Harin was well pleased. He had struck a fine bargain. Tonight he would dream of profits to come.

He was not alone. One by one, the city’s other merchant princes came by. After them came merchants and then traders. All left the booth with satisfaction. All carried off what they could only regard as booty, considering the prices that they had paid. Every one of the fine carnelian carvings, whether of beasts or men, had been snapped up.

Before the first stars of evening graced the sky, the booth was gone. The djals and djabalas were packed away in coffers. The booth awning, carpets and poles had been rolled together and loaded onto the haughty camels. The empty chests were stowed on the beasts and the caravan passed out of Derkhan, back down Imperial Way. The Gate of the Setting Sun closed behind them. For all that the guards could see from the gate towers, the stones and sand might as well have swallowed them.

As the evening deepened, lights began to blossom all over Derkhan. They showed in those rare windows that faced the street. They showed also in the ventilation gaps at the tops and bottoms of all of Derkhan’s doors. The market bloomed flowers of light from candles, lanterns and torches as business went on in the cooler shades of evening and early night.

As the night wore on, the lights died away. Soon, Derkhan slept. Sleeping, Derkhan dreamed but for all of her dreams, she never dreamt of the reality that overtook her that night…
