Big Bird Deli, Part 3
Continued from https://fuck-customers.tumblr.com/post/185625162330/continuation-of-the-big-bird-deli-story-found
Now, I know you all want me to say I got a new job and rubbed it in my store manager’s face. Sadly, reality is often disappointing. My top choices so far sent back general rejection emails and I’m looking into different industries to branch into. Now, it's not all bad news, but in order to get into the good news, I need to tell you all a story about one co-worker; our constant call off, whom I’ll refer to as CCO. Buckle up for a long story.
CCO was transferred to our store from the one about five minutes down the road a little under three years ago now. I was still in my first year when she transferred in. As I worked with her, she seemed like a good co-worker. Knowledgeable, dependable, she even taught a bunch of tricks to make the job easier. Then, some things started to bubble to the surface.
At first, the only bad thing about her is that she took a long time in the bathroom, 10-15 minutes, pretty much a break without clocking out for one. CCO’s explanation for this was biological, but she couldn’t identify her condition. Skeptical, but ok. Then, she’d also take a long time to get a drink (Non-alcoholic). Managers caught sipping a drink in the break room, and even the training room (Small room with computers for basic training/OSHA/Food Safety) and told her multiple times, she could only do that on breaks. She’d also do stuff that led to numerous signs in our back hall. She’d try store dry food there, take drinks back there, and she’d be on her cell phone on her shift way too much (Mostly showing her cats, making notes, not talking or playing games).
Then, she began to talk constantly. She’d talk with customers even after their orders were done. I constantly saw customers get that “I need to get going but I don’t see my chance to leave yet” expression, and she’d keep blabbering on for a few more minutes as the customer slowly tried to inch away. But it wasn’t just customers, CCO would do the same to co-workers. She’d blabber on while doing nothing or only very small tasks. Sometimes her conversations sucked you in, even though the topics were things from youth, church, or constant updates about her cats (she and husband got up to FIVE cats, and yes, introductions to them included pictures.) I had the highest tolerance for these stories, not sure why.
Now, I can handle those things above. But it got worse. So. Much. Worse. After our store got remodeled just before CCO came in, tasks were updated to include not only sweeping the department floor every night but also washing and squeegeeing the floor. CCO made excuses so she wouldn’t be the one doing it. She’d do anything she could to pass it off on that night’s co-worker. She made excuses that it hurt her back, but refused time and time again to get a doctor’s note to excuse her from the task. She also made excuses that it was tiring, but she stopped those excuses after only a couple weeks. This, coupled with many closers forgetting some tasks, provoked our Deli Manager to make daily task sheets starting this past summer, mostly focused on the closing staff. I, personally, am ok with the sheets, as I view it as a tool to acclimate new employees to the department tasks.
But here’s the big one. She ‘began’ to get migraines within six months of her transfer. She’d slow and become less useful during work, taking long treks to get water and basic medicine that seemed to do the trick at first. The kicker is that she began to call off once every two weeks. Now, you may think that’s not so bad and it’ll count against her. Wrong. She applied for FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) for her migraines. She could spend a TON of hours towards it, and she could reapply when she ran out. I started out sympathetic, as I have family members with migraines, but they have methods to curb it so they can work. CCO started calling off once a week. Twice a week. This year, it went up to three times a week. And it was almost always on the same co-worker, Nice Coworker (NC). NC became stressed, she didn’t even want to be scheduled with CCO because of it, but sometimes had no choice. I saw NC break down in tears multiple times. She threatened management to not call her if CCO called off on Sundays, cuz she wouldn’t come in at all. Our deli manager retaliated by trying to schedule CCO less. CCO retaliated by complaining about her hours and claiming hours of other co-workers due to seniority!!! She’d just take their shifts and call-off anyway! So not only was she causing hours to drop, she was basically stealing money from people who actually show up for work.
This all caused morale and productivity to plummet. We were stressed, aggravated even. All the while management still wanted everything perfect while not addressing the problem. And since we’re union, management has to give CCO chance after chance before she’s finally fired or CCO will just run and cry to the union about ‘unfair termination’. We also got wind from people in the store down the street (Sometimes people over here have to cover over there and vice versa) that this behavior happened down there, but not to the extent it got down here, and was the reason CCO transferred. We also learned that she’s had this behavior at all the past jobs she told anyone about. This woman is ten years older than me and hasn’t learned any lessons about her behavior.
Oh, but the cherry on top of this comes in the form of gaslighting and manipulation. CCO dared to call NC her friend while she was claiming NC’s hours and calling off on her! CCO would apologize and say that she “was a shitty person,” and that we “must hate her”. Insincere apologies, self-bashing designed to make you say “No, you’re not a piece of garbage!”(even though she was). CCO also spread rumors about a friend who’s like a brother to me (from another department) when he briefly got in deep trouble. She did this because she thought she could get his full-time position once he was fired (A position that took him being there 12 years and his manager begging multiple times on his behalf to get). Needless to say, I heard through the grapevine and began to truly hate her.
Oh, and remember those call-offs? CCO’d often do those on the weekend, y’know, the busy times. Especially Sundays. Since she was a “Good Christian™”, she’d want to go to church on Sundays. Ok. Reasonable. Then, she called off on Sunday evenings, a shift that’s hell to close alone. Again, on NC mostly. She’d do this repeatedly until our Deli Manager decided to not schedule her on Sunday, two weeks in a row. CCO smirked and told NC that “Her plan had worked!” and that she won’t work Sundays (She didn’t put them off on her availability because it was discouraged, and sometimes even rejected, to not work weekends). To say that, and say that to the person she called off on constantly, is just despicable. Many of us told our deli manager as soon as possible. If she didn’t schedule CCO on Sundays, she’d work on Sundays in any department she had experience in (she’s cross-trained in the Hot foods and meat departments).
At the start of this year. Everyone in the department hated her. Some would be catty or strictly business with her. I opted to pretend to not want to rip her face off, otherwise, I risked forwarding that bile to customers, and I have cried on CCO’s shoulder in the past due to previous work-related bullshit (not the story above). But, we finally had some news from the grapevine; CCO’s doctor AND corporate had picked up on her FMLA abuse. It was flagged as abuse because during times her FMLA expired and needed to be redone her migraines had ‘mysteriously’ disappeared. No call-offs until after FMLA was reinstated. Her doctor told her that he wouldn’t approve more and even if he did, it wouldn’t be approved by the company. By our calculations, she’d run out at the end of May. She ran out mid-May. All we had to do was wait.
And this past week, the good news! Turns out CCO didn’t help NC much the Saturday of my paid vacation. NC went to Store Manager on Wednesday, on her day off, to report CCO. Store Manager told NC that CCO, and potentially all of the deli, was going to get pulled into the office soon one by one. Details couldn’t be said due to confidentiality but NC said that shit was about to go down, we all just didn’t know what. On Friday, now mid-June, our Union Steward (A worker to represents the union while not working for the union directly) came and got CCO and pulled her into the office with Store Manager. Ten minutes later, CCO was escorted out of the store by Loss Prevention. The scales finally tipped when the customer complaints stacked up, and that she got into a verbal argument with a co-worker (Not me or NC) with a manager as a witness. Said co-worker was at the store on her day off, shopping and chatting with us briefly. While CCO passed by, CCO called her a bitch, in earshot of Loss Prevention. But that was the last we’ve seen of CCO.
Slight dancing was had, and upper management reminded us that this is an opportunity to turn the deli around. We got a new person who started during my vacation. She’s absolutely amazing and gets along with everyone. It’s only been a few days, but already other departments are commenting that the deli seems happier and that a great weight has been lifted. I always joked about giving CCO this big speech in a dark, even tone and saying she needs to go on disability or welfare if her work ethic or migraines are that bad. But, I decided against doing a big Facebook drama thing. Instead, I blocked her on social media and her phone number. I’m glad to finally cut her out of my life permanently.
As for me? I’m still at Big Bird. Now that the main problem is gone, I can take my time finding a good job and not go for the first one that gives me an interview. I still want to leave because of upper management, and I haven’t received confirmation that my write up was overturned. Things are looking up, and I’m glad we now have a solid, competent team as we get ready for the 4th of July sales.
Last word: I was going to post this as is, but today, I heard something amazing. A co-worker had to work a split shift, beginning down the road then coming up to our store. Turns out, CCO didn’t tell her husband that she got fired! She told him she was on vacation! And he works down the street! I busted up laughing, imagining scenarios when he finds out she lied. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall for that confrontation. :3
TL;DR
Not much has happened other than a co-worker getting fired and absolutely deserving it after putting the deli under so much stress.

Still Day 4 - Charlotte NC
6.45pm
No, not a “ Rainy Night in Georgia”, but a rainy night in Charlotte North Carolina, however whilst the thunder booms and the lightening strikes it’s still a very warm 90 degrees.
Awoke quite early for a fast start and needed to be on the road by 7.00am for a date with Spartanburg and the BMW Zentrum.
The road was clear when we left, however not only is Atlanta a pig to get into it’s also a pig to get out of. The traffic congestion is merciless, really the M25 is a mere nothing to a five lane snarl up, as the temperatures rose, so did my temper. I was convinced we were not going to make it to BMW factory in time. However we eventually managed to break free from the bumper to bumper jam and escaped onto the I85.
So we hit the concrete and were on our way….
Honestly I really love seeing the giant hoarding at the side of the road, who on earth dreams them up?
“ In a collision, easy decision, just call Colin Monge and Associates “ I’m not too sure on how to pronounce Mr M’s surname ?
“ Please donate your boat” ..that’s a bit random ?
Oh yes and the disgusting “ Cheesecake Pancakes from Cracker Barrell.. to be honest the picture looked like vomit between two limped pancakes, how can anyone find that appealing?
Also we kept seeing signs saying “ speed checked by detection device” , why not just say speed camera?  Anyway on we thundered along the slab and eventuall pulled into the BMW Visitor Parking Lot. I have to be honest I didn’t expect much but I knew Tony would find it interesting, how wrong can one get ? Super Wrong !  BMW Zentrum was one of the most interesting places that I have ever been to. Our group of 14 was ferried from the VC to the main plant and after donning safety specs we were led through the production line from the first paint job to the finished model rolling off the conveyor belt. How flaming cool is that?
I had no idea that BMW is made to customer specifications, no two are alike. The customer gets to choose virtually everything about it from the colour ( there are 52 choices ) downwards.
The factory produces 1500 vehicles a day, 1100 people work there and they have their own medical centre and pharmacy.  Our next stop was the Kings Mountain Military Park in South Carolina. Once again we hit the slab, but this time it wasn’t so enjoyable. It is very clear to me that the some folks from the Carolinas are not so tolerant of people of colour.
In fact I would go as far as to say there is a distinct lack of  Black, Asian, Hispanic people around here.
We saw a pickup “proudly”displaying two flags, the Dixie and another saying F**k Biden.. as he passed us, I kept my eyes firmly to the front, I thought it best.
Kings Mountain Military Park was another revelation, I had initially decided to go there so we could stretch our legs a bit after the hours on the slab.
The battle was a strategic one, there were the Loyalist Army, those Americans who still swore allegiance to the King ( Mad King George ) and the Patriots who wanted the British kicked out of America.
Up until now the Brits were thrashing the Yanks and ole Washington had retreated to Philadelphia for a rest and a beer.
However at Kings Mountain the American Patriots thrashed the American Loyalists soundly. The British were trying to build up an American militia and this battle killed it stone dead. So the Brits had no inside assistance and had to rely on soldiers from England . The rest is history.
We are now in the servants quarters at the Duke Mansion in Charlotte NC enjoying wine and listening to the rain pattering away.

Shopping online to stay safe during the pandemic? Here are 10 tips for avoiding scams
Slightly digging will help you keep away from these too-good-to-be-true traps when procuring on-line. martin-dm/E+ by way of Getty Photographs
The vacation season is already a booming time for on-line procuring. The COVID-19 pandemic solely will increase the chance that when individuals store this vacation season, they are going to select on-line procuring over brick-and-mortar shops. Nevertheless, this additionally means there may be more likely to be a increase in on-line scams.
Already, a number of corporations from outdoors the U.S. are promoting comparatively unchecked on the web, promoting – and even simply pretending to promote – all method of merchandise. The gadgets are sometimes marketed utilizing designs stolen from professional companies and artists, usually ripped off from Etsy, particularly if these designs have been featured on standard websites like Bored Panda.
When individuals purchase these rip-off merchandise, what arrives is usually of low high quality. That’s if something ever arrives. Usually the corporate simply shutters and renames itself with out sending something. In worst-case eventualities, in addition they steal clients’ bank card info.
So store good and spot scams? Listed below are some clues to look at for.
1. Is it too good to be true?
Does the product pictured match the value? Know the market. A tremendous product for a low value is trigger for suspicion. For instance, Instagram was that includes images of a “Halloween Creation Calendar.” The advert listed a value of US$59.99, however out there for a restricted time for $29.80. At first look you would possibly suppose you’re getting an ideal deal, however take a second to suppose it by means of. That value would barely cowl the price of transport and dealing with for a product of that measurement. The unique product, offered on Etsy, retails for over US$1,800, and the creator has a backlog of orders.

2. When unsure: Google it
Maybe you’re not acquainted sufficient with Etsy workmanship to acknowledge a probable ripoff. When unsure, search the product title or obtain the picture and run a Google picture search. You might be more likely to discover the unique supply. If the product actually exists – not like this CG child shark that one firm used as an advert for its alleged child shark robotic toy – you possibly can select to pay the unique artist for his or her arduous work or take the chance and attempt to get the knockoff. The search will even reveal whether or not there are a number of alleged companies promoting the identical “distinctive” and “unique” gadgets utilizing the identical actual footage. When you begin seeing double or extra, that’s a warning signal.
3. Verify the enterprise repute
Looking for the enterprise title will doubtless simply take you to the enterprise’s web site. As a substitute, search the enterprise title with the phrase “rip-off.” It is possible for you to to inform fairly shortly if there’s a worrisome historical past related to the enterprise. You may as well attempt Scamvoid, which is devoted to figuring out the trustworthiness of on-line hyperlinks. There could also be a Higher Enterprise Bureau itemizing for the corporate, however watch out about counting on these. You may as well discover Fb teams, like this one for fashion-related scams, that observe untrustworthy websites.
4. Too new to belief
In some circumstances the enterprise is so new that you simply received’t have the ability to discover a observe document. It is a crimson flag. They’re doubtless a kind of corporations that shut up as soon as they’ve gotten sufficient orders then arrange a brand new title and new area and do it another time. There’s a likelihood that it’s a professional new companies attempting to open store throughout a pandemic. To inform the distinction between a professional new enterprise and a fly-by-night operation, apply a number of the following steps to guage them.
5. Evaluation the opinions
Take a detailed take a look at the opinions. If there aren’t any, again away. If there are, verify for the next warning indicators. The opinions are few and unanimously 5 stars with no feedback. If there are feedback, they’re loaded with damaged English or obscure reward that would have been copied and pasted from any product. Not one of the opinions contains footage of the particular acquired product. There aren’t any damaging opinions, which is a crimson flag as a result of even the most effective professional companies can’t please everybody on a regular basis. As a facet be aware, if you’re a professional product providing, watch out to not learn an excessive amount of into the damaging opinions.
6. Is it a ‘good’ web site?
Does the enterprise have a web site, and never only a Fb web page? If not, that’s a giant no. In the event that they do, is it an entire web site, or is it barely there? Verify that the enterprise has a cellphone quantity that works, and if you search the quantity it doesn’t have 12 different “companies” related to it. Verify that it lists a mailing tackle, ideally one which isn’t only a submit workplace field.
Verify the location’s “about us” web page. Doesn’t have one? That’s one other no. Does the “about us” embody a yr the enterprise began? Does it embody details about the merchandise’ creators? If the web page has a photograph purporting to be of the proprietor or artist, you are able to do a Google picture search to see if it’s a photograph copied from one other webpage, a inventory photograph or a faux created by an AI system. Do their claims about themselves maintain as much as scrutiny? 7. Social media presence: Have they got one?
Equally, have they got a social media presence outdoors of the advert that pops up in your newsfeed? If not, steer clear. You may as well see how far again their posts go, in addition to verify the standard of these posts and chatter concerning the firm.
8. Beware the ‘going out of enterprise’ story
In the course of the pandemic, professional companies are, in actual fact, closing. Illegitimate companies have been latching onto this as a software to tug at individuals’s heartstrings to trick buyers. It’s unlawful for American companies to do that, however companies outdoors of the U.S. will not be topic to the identical legal guidelines. One strategy to inform the professional companies from the frauds is to verify the beginning date on web site area registrations and social media websites. If the enterprise popped up throughout the pandemic simply in time to exit of enterprise, steer clear.

Finding a roofing contractor to take on repairs, installation or replacement of a home’s roof can be an overwhelming, sometimes confusing task. There are five things to look at when choosing the best roofing contractor in Raleigh, NC to meet one’s specific needs. If any of these five points are not met, it is a warning sign, and it might be a better option to explore other roofing service companies. The roofing contractor should be insured, work locally, offer good value for money, communicate well and be willing to put their commitment on paper.
Check that they are fully insured
The roofing contractor that does work on a home must have liability insurance and worker’s compensation. This is a legal requirement in place to protect the homeowner and the roofing contractor. Here, it is important to take things a step further, once the certificates have been checked, phone their insurance company to confirm that the cover is valid.
As there are costs to being licensed and insured, it may mean that companies with lower bids on roofing repairs or replacements, may be cutting corners and not insuring correctly.
Work with a local contractor
This has several important benefits including local knowledge and, if they are good at what they do, a strong reputation in the community. Local knowledge means that they will offer a solution that will best withstand Raleigh-specific weather- from hot sun and rain in summer, to cold and wind in the winter.
Additionally, a business that has a strong reputation that has been in operation for a long time, gives peace of mind that the Raleigh roofing company’s work is reliable, trustworthy and is of a high standard. Choosing a company that is not locally based or is new, with no reviews, opens up the possibility that they may be a fly-by-night operation, that is not available for follow-ups within the standard five-year warranty period.
Choose a roofing contractor based on value for money, not price alone
It may be tempting to try to cut costs and go with a low-cost contractor. While it may seem cheaper up-front, it’s likely that there will be additional costs to fix problems that arise later. Reputable companies have fixed overheads and insurance costs that have to be covered. They also offer a workmanship guarantee that will cover any issues that come up if the roof does not perform as expected.
Good communication is a good sign
At the beginning of the process, contractors are likely to be very responsive to phone calls and emails as they are hoping to secure business. So, if there are any issues with communication before getting started, this should serve as a red flag. Think about whether calls were returned and documents sent through in a timely manner, if not, then consider a different local roofing contractor.
Get everything in writing
Ensure that the scope of the work, the timescale, and the costs are clearly detailed. It is important to know how long the job is going to take, what size crew they will have working on the roof, and the date that the roof will be completed by. Whether it is a roofing repair job or a complete roof replacement, it is important to stay in control. This is also a good time to negotiate the terms of the payment, as the funds should not be released until the job has been signed off.
The team at Luna Restoration offers specialized residential and commercial roofing installations, repairs and replacement. With many years of experience and an excellent reputation for high-quality work and customer service, they are leading roofing contractors in Raleigh, NC.

What Are Custom Signs?
Custom signs are made without any preparation and customized to fit a specific client or task's requirements. They are one of the best approaches to receiving your message to the broadest crowd. Get more information please visit here  Charlotte sign company.
For most land-based organizations, tailor made signs are one of the main approaches to getting their association far superior to their rivals, particularly in a bustling road. Since, obviously, the central matter about custom signs is that they are a unique case. Particularly on the off chance that another company is laying down a good foundation for itself, these sorts of signs are massively significant.
A contemporary custom sign can do a truckload of difficult work on for the benefit of your business, and it is astounding exactly the amount it can add to how your association is seen, and to the structure up of major areas of strength for a. Custom signs are custom fitted to individual organizations spending plans likewise - another advantage on the off chance that you don't have a colossal sum to contribute. They are progressively utilized in a large number of settings, including shops and window signs, pennants at expos, show flags, building signs, promoting and business signs. You must pick a sign creator keen on accomplishing more than a 'rush work' and finishing the work as quickly as could be expected. The best sign creators invest wholeheartedly in their work, and an opportunity to talk about the singular necessities of their clients. There is a gigantic measure of mastery engaged with making the ideal custom sign, including designing, numerical and inventive abilities.
While it very well may be enticing to figure you can make a tailor made sign yourself, actually without the right preparation, you'll battle. Similarly, assuming you're thinking about having custom signage, consider definitively what you need to say with it, and how that message will be passed on. Like so much else, with regards to custom made signs, the unseen details are the main problem. You'll have to ponder what tone to have, and consider what pictures, if any, you'd like on the sign. The typeface you use additionally has a significant impact in the completed sign; disregard this viewpoint at your hazard. While it could appear to be enticing to go for striking or capital letters, exaggerating either can tire the perusers eye, so treat this with alert. Something else to avoid is bended, looked over script. This will look perfect on a plated edged greeting card, however isn't clear enough for a sign which should be seen right away. With in a real sense many typefaces to look over, the decision can feel stupefying. However, basically, typefaces can be partitioned into a couple of general classifications, including eccentric, youngster like, exemplary, expert or retro. The decision will be reliant upon the vibe of your specific business For some expert sign creators, sans serif text styles are the they pick. While a serif style adds little lines to the tops and tails of letters, sans serif text styles don't, which makes your sign a lot simpler to peruse.

How White Cloud Prevents E-Cig Sales to Minors
As the Food and Drug Administration continues to encourage e-cigarette companies to do their part to eliminate the sale of vaping products to minors, White Cloud is proud to say that we have been leading the crusade to keep e-cigs out of the hands of youth for years. We take our commitment to only market and sell to adults very seriously, which is why we have implemented industry-leading age verification policies for our online store.
E-Cig Age Restriction Laws in the U.S.
As of August of 2016, electronic cigarettes were categorized under FDA’s Federal Rules for Tobacco Retailers. This ruling placed e-cigs in the same realm of traditional cigarettes, thus requiring retailers to check photo ID of everyone under the age of 27, only sell e-cigarettes to customers aged 18 and older, and prohibiting retailers from selling e-cigs in vending machines or giving away free samples. There are 44 states that have already passed some version of tobacco-related age restriction legislation. Although some have existed since 2010, state e-cig laws greatly vary in language and enforcement. For example, a study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that 90 percent of e-cig vendors in NC are ignoring age verification requirements.
White Cloud’s Age Verification History
White Cloud has been a forerunner in preventing the sales of e-cigs to minors long before it became illegal. When we first started selling e-cigs in shopping malls, all of our mall kiosks displayed a large “We Card” sign, and ever since, we have maintained a very strict policy requiring customers to present identification before making a purchase. The anonymity of the Internet presents many challenges in the age verification process, so in early 2014 White Cloud teamed up with experts at LexisNexis to stick with our policy of protecting minors and preventing identity fraud.
How White Cloud’s Age Verification Process Works
LexisNexis holds a database of 34 billion public records, including government issued IDs. After a customer finishes placing their order, the information provided is checked against the LexisNexis system. If LexisNexis cannot confirm the customer’s age based off of records in its database, the order is flagged and an email is sent to the customer requesting proof of age. To proceed with the order, the customer must send us a photocopy of a state-issued ID or provide a previous address legally associated with their name as proof of residence. If these criteria are not met, the order is then canceled and refunded for the full amount.
How Effective is White Cloud’s Age Verification Process?
LexisNexis has processed more than 50 million age verification requests over the past decade, so its reputation is well regarded within the world of e-commerce. Since partnering with them, we are proud of our report card:
Of all rejected orders, 13 percent owned up to being underage. One young person even called us to apologize for violating our policies!
About 40 percent of rejected orders were due to lack of response for ID. We’ve gotten calls from parents who found out through our age verification system that their children were trying to purchase e-cigs using the parents’ identities.
Our customer service agents aggressively follow up on suspicious orders. One young person who was denied purchase through our system informed us that they would ask their parents to buy e-cigs for them. We immediately flagged the address in our system to make sure that didn’t happen.
Of the 43 percent of customers who outright refused to submit ID, an alarming number informed us that they would instead purchase e-cigs at a store that didn’t ask for proof of age. This is disconcerting because it means that local laws are not being enforced, which means many minors still have access to e-cigs.
White Cloud believes that building a respectable e-cig industry means taking a stand against the sale of nicotine products to minors. The U.S. still has very lenient legislation regarding e-cigs compared to most of Europe, but stricter regulations are no doubt on the way. We hope our competition will follow our example in keeping e-cigs away from young people so we can focus on our mission of providing safe alternatives to tobacco for adults.

Marjorie Roberts about to open up another block of Jenkins finest on Livermush Monday
Americana Day and Livermush Monday
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
What an amazing fun weekend we were treated to this Labor Day!
At 11 a. m. on Saturday morning, the ridge on E Street in North Wilkesboro where The Record Park is located simply broke out in music when the 13th Annual Americana Day Youth Music program began.
This event, hosted by The Record, pays tribute to our local VFW Post and its Honor Guard with a special day of music, made all the more special by the fact that the players are all under 18 years of age.
Clearly, bluegrass and Americana music is safely in the hands of some very talented young people.
At noon, as is our custom during events at The Record Park, the American flag was raised by the VFW Post 1142's Honor Guard. After Post Chaplain Larry Reavis led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, 12-year-old Libby Harbour played the Star Spangled Banner on her fiddle.  The sun was bright, the wind was calm, the soldiers and the crowd stood at attention, and the silence was broken by only by Libby's perfectly played rendition of our National Anthem. I said it then, and I'll say it again now, it would bring a tear to the eye of a stone statue.
And so it went for the rest of the day. Youngsters like 8-year-old Lake Carver played and sang with a stage presence that completely belied their youth. Two others, Heidi Holloway and Devin Huie, have both played at 12 Americana Days, and are about to age out of this event. They thankfully both have a future in music that we will all get to enjoy for the years to come.
Americana Day 2018 was truly a beautiful day with beautiful children, and a musical treat for everyone which will be long remembered. Thank you to all who helped.
Then comes Labor Day Monday morning, and I find myself in Carl White's studio with Allen Langley, our mutual friend from Shelby, N.C., recording a podcast with Carl. These podcasts, as Carl says, will tell the story behind the stories.  From there we head up NC Hwy 268 West to beautiful downtown Ferguson to introduce Allen to an event like no other, The Grocery Basket Café, 86 year-old Marjorie Roberts, and a unique musical experience known simply as Livermush Monday.
Some 15 years ago, musicians and others who attended the fiddlers convention in Happy Valley near Ferguson, and didn't leave on Sunday evening to go home, found themselves looking for a bit of breakfast on Monday. The Grocery Basket Café was nearby, Marjorie is an angel on this earth, and in no time a few folks began to bring along their fiddles and banjos and such, and Livermush Monday was born. Sometimes there are as many as 15-20 people in a loose circle; one person will start a song and the others will jump in, playing everything from "Froggy went a Courtin'" to "Will the Circle be Unbroken."  If you can't pat your foot at Livermush Monday, you have a broken leg.
A few years ago, through our connections with Allen and Carl, Marc Mauney with Jenkins Foods in Shelby was contacted and Marc cheerfully took on a de-facto sponsorship, providing Jenkins Livermush for the event.  He spent a lot of time in Wilkes and surrounding areas and we came to know him as a man who didn't mind working hard and who had a heart of gold.  Sadly, we lost Marc last year in September to a heart attack, but it was truly uplifting to speak with many of his customers in Wilkes--to them he was far more than just Jenkins Foods, he really had become their friend on many, many levels. Marc Mauney's legacy was well-remembered on Monday.
I spent several hours on Monday at the Grocery Basket Café with Carl, Allen, and a full house of folks from Icard to Ireland--all with a common bond--a love of family, friendship, music and especially love for a wonderful soul who had just celebrated her 86th birthday, Marjorie Roberts.
Her smile would open the vaults at Fort Knox.
What a great weekend, full of music and smiling faces from 8 to 86.
 Standing Up
By LAURA WELBORN
There is so much in the news these days revealing the destruction that has been wrought from keeping things secret.
The Me Too movement came from this: the Catholic Church that kept secret the years of abuse by priests and the pharmaceutical companies’ promotion of opioids.  Both have been destroying lives with well intentioned people hiding the truth to protect institutions or companies with little regard to the lives lost.
Yesterday, a friend of mine gave me the book “Dopesick-Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that addicted America” by Beth Macy.
The book documents how opioid pain drugs got their start in the 90’s and where they were first heavily marketed.  That first market was Appalachia.  Wilkes County is part of that region.
We have the highest number of opioid addicted people of any county in the state. I help people everyday who started out on painkillers from an injury or post surgery and ended up unintentionally addicted.
How big is our problem?
Wilkes County has one of the highest rate of opioid-related deaths per capita in the state.  In 2016, Wilkes County saw 25 such deaths compared to 10 fatalities by car crashes (many car crashes are related to impairment by alcohol/drugs- which are related to people taking painkillers (opioids) while driving).
In her book, Macy talks about the marketing of the drug OxyContin. It used preliminary and ultimately flawed scientific studies heralding the “less than 1 percent” addiction rate from observations of hospital use of opioid pain relievers. The critical part left out was a 56 percent addiction rate after patients left the hospital and tried handle their pain.
The book talks about Purdue Pharma’s marketing of OxyContin for all kinds of chronic pain, not just cancer, and claimed it was safe and reliable. Pardue sales reps get bonuses for the number of Appalachia doctors they convinced to prescribe Opioids.  They fanned out, evangelizing doctors and dentists in all 50 states with the message “prescribing OxyContin for pain is the moral, responsible and compassionate thing to do for people with back injuries, wisdom-tooth surgery and bronchitis.” The wave of Opioid addiction that followed could not be called moral, responsible or compassionate.
The 1996 introduction of OxyContin coincided with pain being defined as “the fifth vital sign.” Traditionally, temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate were considered the vital signs, and all could be easily measured and recorded. Pain level was different. In 1999, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations approved new mandatory standards for the assessment and treatment of pain.  But, unlike the other four vital signs, pain could not be externally measured.  Patients were asked to assess their own pain and the goal was no pain.  Sales rates and profits for opioid producing pharmaceutical companies skyrocketed.  The movement of opioid pain relief had begun and with it the cover up of the devastation and death from addiction.
The book describes several physicians and advocates who tried to stop this movement but were largely ignored.  It is the advocates who interest me. The people working to uncover wrong and stop harm. What separates these people willing to risk their own careers, comfort and peace to advocate for the most vulnerable? Is it the power of love and not the love of power?  People who are willing to stand up against wrong and challenge rules and institutions when they see harm are a special breed.  I think every time we challenge something we see as wrong we are doing God’s greatest work.

Enemies of Israel Pay the Price
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
Israel has a long history of standing up to bullies and their threats. They require not only an Iron Dome but also an iron fist, occasionally wrapped in a velvet glove, to protect her land and her people.
One of the first bullies to unleash taunts and threats against Israel was the Philistine giant Goliath. His military stance—and the future king of Israel’s response—is an example of how to stand up to bullies, whether individuals or nations.
Before David showed up at the battlefield, things weren’t going well. Goliath’s intimidation tactics were working. Fear had paralyzed King Saul’s army.  Nine-feet tall, armored to the teeth, and toting a formidable 14-kilo spear, this guy trained hard and was combat-seasoned. But above all, he was BIG. Israel’s present-day enemies are also “big”— in the sheer numbers of anti-Zionists, radical Islamists, and hostile leftists, globalists and thugs spewing threats, lies and insults like a giant corporate Goliath.
Due to fear, no soldier was willing to confront the giant. But fear is what feeds bullies. The best way to neutralize intimidation is to run at it with the right weapon in hand, which David did. Even school counselors in America, which is facing a rash of bullying, advises kids to look the bully in the eye without hesitation and stand their ground. Bullying only increases “when the bully realizes his victim is not going to stand up for himself,” says author Signe Whitson.
But the truth is, Goliath didn’t have much going for himself except for his colossal size.
His presumed victory was so narrowly focused on bigness that he rashly provoked a one-on-one contest—based not just on ancient custom but also on his own arrogance—that would haunt his people for years: “If [David] can fight and kill me, then we will become [Israel’s] subjects.”
Goliath’s gigantic ego was his undoing. His imperious belief in himself blinded his judgment and limited his focus. The mighty warrior —crippled by inadequate intelligence (in more ways than one)—underestimated his opponent. Could history be repeating itself?
In the giant’s eyes, David didn’t have much going for him. He was young and seemed inexperienced for war. After all, he had no armor or helmet, spear or sword.
Nor did he anticipate David’s speed, training, or motivation: David, zealous for Israel and the G-d of Israel, was appalled that an “uncircumcised Philistine” [defied] the armies of the living G-d.” (1 Sam. 17:26)
Mustered by Saul, David “ran quickly” toward Goliath and hurled a fatal stone into his forehead. The giant fell hard and before the shocked Philistines could react, David again “ran,” grabbed Goliath’s sword, and severed his head.
Unbeknownst to Goliath, David did train for adversity—as a shepherd under sometimes dangerous conditions. The flock’s enemies were his own enemies. He perfected his aim with a sling while guarding the sheep entrusted to his care. When a lion or bear attacked, David killed them head-on thus delivering the sheep from their jaws and laws. His training helped him develop an intense motivation foreign to Goliath’s low mentality. David’s heart was for Israel and for the G-d of Israel. This made him fearless.
Israel has had its share of lions, bears and Goliaths. They still stalk, sniffing at the borders, probing for vulnerabilities. They still brag, threaten and incite violence and fearmonger.
But they underestimate and fail to understand Israel, whose founding documents, laws and defense forces have a different motivation and moral code than to rob, hate, kill and destroy. Israel does not sacrifice its people to lions and bears—it defends them.
As in David’s day, present-day “Goliaths” know nothing of the G-d of Israel’s love for the land and people of Israel. David knew, so he was not afraid to face Goliath—or the “giants” that followed. It is also why he won a seemingly asymmetrical battle.
Let us run, with Israel, toward this band of giants, who share not just the attitude of the Goliath of old, but who also are making the same errors in judgment. Whether our slings are the written or spoken word, diplomacy, a timely vote, or another gift, let’s use it faithfully and fearlessly just as David did.
  An Invitation to Come Back
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolinas
It was an umbrella day for our cameras and everyone else in Shelby NC, and a lot of people had traveled to the town square for the much-anticipated opening of the Earl Scruggs Center.  Earl Eugene Scruggs was born in the nearby farming community of Flint Hill. Growing up, he had been surrounded by brothers and sisters who played the banjo and guitar, so it’s no surprise that they had a significant influence on his life.
The surprise, however, may have come when, at the age of twenty-one, Earl was invited to join Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. This was just the beginning. Three years later he and Lester Flatt left the Bluegrass Boys and formed the Foggy Mountain Boys; before long the group was simply know as Flat and Scruggs. In 1955 the group joined the Grand Ole Opry and soon the incredibly successful Martha White brand sponsorship become synonymous with the sounds of Bluegrass music. Martha White Self-Rising Flour with Hot Rise “Goodness Gracious, It’s Good” became a common expression of the day.
Another significant public success came in 1962 with their release of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" on the TV show The Beverly Hillbillies. Flat and Scruggs were guests on the show several times over the years.
The Flat and Scruggs band parted ways in 1969 and Earl went on to organize the Earl Scruggs Revue. They enjoyed much success and the three finger Scruggs style of banjo playing has charmed hundreds of millions of music listeners and players around the world.
The Earl Scruggs Center is located in the middle of the historic Shelby Town  Square in the old Court House and is all about the music and stories of the American South. I met a lot of great people on the opening day of the Scruggs Center, and we produced a good segment for Life in the Carolinas on the day’s activities.
After I finished my interviews I was leaving by one of the side doors of the center. I was greeted by someone saying, "Hi, Carl, welcome to Shelby. I’m Allen Langley and I’m a fan of your show."
We had a pleasant conversation, and Allen invited me to come back to Shelby and he gave me a list of things that he thought would be good stories. He shared his contact number and said he would be happy to assist in any way that he could. I come to discover that Allen was right about Cleveland County and he was also true to his word; when I called, he was very helpful in assisting with producing stories in Cleveland County. Allen leads a very busy life running his business activities. He is an active Rotarian, serves on various boards and has a big heart for those in need, with all that going on he found the time to help anyway. Allen is a good friend to have.
I was glad to discover that The American Legion World Series now calls Shelby NC its permanent home. When I met Eddie Holbrook, co-chairmen of the Executive Committee of the American Legion World Series, I came to understand the true power of his community.
I witnessed hundreds of people working together on projects that benefit their community at large. Eddie was the first to tell me that it’s always a team effort. And those around him told me of his tireless work and comment to benefiting everyone.
It seems like that’s the way community champions should be.I’ve been invited to return many times and I have always enjoyed by visits and continued new discoveries.

Since I hadnt kept any fish this year, we took some home. Theres a couple of lessons in there. Game and Parks counts 35 species, not including sunfish hybrids, as gamefish in Nebraska. At least 10 of them (I cant always sort out all those sunfish species) inhabit Lake Minatare. Several, including crappies, are great fish for the table. If you only fish for one species, youre missing some great opportunities. Even if you focus on walleyes, its a good idea to change gears once in awhile. That includes changing tactics. Despite all those fish that should be hungry after wintering under ice, we didnt find much by fishing near the bottom with jigs. The water was about 52 degrees still a bit cold. The walleyes might have had spawning on their minds. Or we might have done better by trolling closer to the surface, casting near the dam or working shallow water near the trees. We were using minnows to catch those crappies. When I switched to a bit of nightcrawler, I started catching bluegills. If youre not experimenting with different methods, youre missing opportunities.

I believe that in some countries, things are done slightly differently, but in the clubs I’ve fished with over the years here in than $1.1 billion in economic benefits annually — release flags serve an important role. cover letter w/o experience
http://www.forbes.com/sites/susanadams/2015/01/21/how-to-write-a-cover-letter-when-you-have-no-experience/3/#6a0b048237bc
1. The first paragraph should say who you are, where you go to school, what the job is that you’re applying for and how you came to apply. It helps a lot if you can include a name of someone with a personal connection. You should also clarify where you’re located geographically. If the internship is in a city other than where you live or go to school, say you are planning to be there during the dates of the job. Don’t say you “could” be there. “If the student shows hesitation, that translates to ambivalence about whether they want the job,” says Berger.
Say where you learned about the job. Example: My name is Susan and I’m a freshman at UCLA, planning to major in communications. An upper classman from the department forwarded your flyer about the summer internship at Frankenheimer Public Relations in New York City. I’m very interested in the internship, which sounds like it would be my ideal job. I’m a New York native and plan to be in the city from June 1 through early September.” Better yet: “Lucy McGillicutty, who interned at Frankenheimeir Public Relations last summer, suggested I apply for your internship program.” All job seekers, even college freshmen, should have a LinkedIn profile, which can be a great place to discover whether you know someone connected to the company where you want to work.
2. The second paragraph has to connect the dots between you and the employer. Before you write it, print out the job posting and go through it with a highlighter. Note the buzzwords and incorporate them into this part of the letter. Also spend at least an hour on the company site reading and thinking, including clicking through every link. If the firm has a blog, read at least a dozen entries. Check out the firm’s presence on social media and do a wide-ranging Google search. Describe how your experiences meet the challenges presented in the job description. If you’re a college freshman, it’s fine to evoke experience you gained in high school. Example: “I see you’re looking for a self-starter with social media skills. I ran a Facebook page that successfully recruited musicians for a student-produced musical. I conducted auditions, organized rehearsals and arranged the score.” Or: “I see you’re looking for someone who has the ability to multitask while staying organized and being efficient. When I worked at Frank’s Bicycles I juggled a demanding backlog of deadline-sensitive repairs with the responsibility of staffing the counter and waiting on customers.”
3. In the third paragraph, further describe your personal traits and how they make you a great candidate for the job. You’re cooperative, work well with others, you have a great work ethic. Again, give short but specific examples of those skills. Katharine Brooks, executive director of the campus career placement office at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, and author of You Majored in What?: Mapping Your Path from Chaos to Career, says you should try to tell one- or two-line stories about yourself that show how your skills match the job and expand upon the job descriptions in your résumés. Example: “I worked on a team of interns for the successful political campaign of city councilwoman Mary Smith where we organized events and then staffed them, sometimes until 1 A.M.” Or: “When I was working at Frank’s Bicycles, I helped a client who was looking for a Dahon folding bike, which the store didn’t stock. Within an hour I found a distributor willing to make a one-time delivery of the bike the customer wanted.”
4. To wrap up, say when you’ll get in touch. “I’ll try you by phone next Tuesday at 2:00 and hope we can connect.”
5. In most cases, send the letter as an attachment and format it like an old-fashioned business letter with your address at the top, then the date and then the address of the recipient. Most coaches will advise this but I would say formatting is fluid. I’ve written cover letters in the body of an email with the résumé as an attachment. Or you can send the letter as an attachment and just start with a date and a salutation. Your sign-off can be formal, like “Sincerely,” or something warmer, like “All the best.” When in doubt, make the salutation formal: “Dear Ms. Adams” or “To whom it may concern.”
6. Proofread carefully and get someone you trust to check for spelling, grammar and word use. Getting any of this wrong is a red flag that says, “Don’t hire me.”
This approach seems sound to me but longtime career coach Sarah Stamboulie convinced me there’s an even more effective way for beginning job seekers to write a great cover letter. It takes work. Spend very little time writing about yourself and devote most of the letter to why you would be thrilled to work in this job for this employer.
The first paragraph should be the same as outlined above, introducing yourself, naming your school, saying where you’ll be located during the job or internship and naming the position. But the rest of the letter should be devoted to the company, the job and why both interest you.
Stamboulie sent me some samples. I’ll quote a couple of impressive excerpts here. They’re from mid-career adults but will give an idea about what a prospective intern could do. From a client named Benjamin who was trying to arrange a meeting with a manager at the ABC News show Primetime: “I’m particularly interested in Primetime because its stories uncover not only the workings of the criminal mind, but shed light on human nature itself. Your commitment to digging for the truth is well displayed in these tales of human nature gone awry.” Then Benjamin goes on to detail several episodes he particularly admired.
A client named Kim writes, “I’m particularly interested in Lippincott because the company seems to understand branding as not just image but as identity. This is a much deeper approach than advertising or marketing alone because it requires an organization to introspect and reach a point where internal values and processes are consistent and intertwined with external messaging.” I find that sentence a little convoluted but its heart is in the right place. In addition she writes, “It’s also impressive how multidisciplinary Lippincott has become since the days when two designers founded the firm. I was excited to see videos of strategists and architects working alongside each other on the same team.”
That kind of analysis may be a tall order for an 18-year-old, but to the extent you can, describe why the company impresses you.
In fact the intern we hired for this year’s summer Leadership team slot, Harvard senior Laura Reston, did exactly that in her cover letter, which impressed my colleague, Leadership Editor Fred Allen, and raised her chances above some very qualified candidates. Laura didn’t have a personal connection to Forbes but she made it clear in the first paragraph that she’d thought carefully about how her skills could match two of Forbes.com’s seven channels, Leadership or Entrepreneurs. That showed us that she’d taken considerable time to read through each of the channel’s offerings (Leadership alone typically posts 20 stories a day) and given a lot of thought to how her skills and interests would match those two channels as opposed to, say, Investing or Technology. In fact one of the channels, simple called “Lists,” includes no fewer than nine sub-channels, include the annual college ranking and the world’s Billionaires, one of Forbes’ most heavily read sections.
Laura’s second paragraph was close to perfect. She gave me permission to include it here:
“I was drawn to Forbes because of its startup mentality and insistence that, even after 97 years, innovation should be valued and encouraged. I thrive when I am challenged to think creatively, whether that is at The Harvard Crimson, where I serve as Metro editor, or the changeable world of digital journalism, where speed is paramount and accuracy, essential.”
Laura broke out of the four-paragraph mold I recommend above, writing instead seven paragraphs. The middle three grafs expanded on her skills, and they’re impressive, but they’re a little too much like boilerplate that could be applied to any journalism internship. It would have been good if she had tied them more closely to Forbes.
But her last paragraph was another model of cover letter excellence:
“I also believe that my background would specifically suit the Forbes internship. As a government concentrator I study power and leadership on a daily basis and would bring that academic background to the Leadership team at Forbes. I also think I would excel on the Entrepreneurs team. Harvard is a hotbed of startup culture, and I have taken computer science classes here that have exposed me to the concerns of budding coders and entrepreneurs. I would love to see Forbes expand its coverage of health care startups, an industry that I have studied as a government concentrator here.”
As a graduating senior, Laura obviously has more to bring to the table than a freshman like my son who has the challenge of drawing only from his high school work experience. But Tipograph makes the point that if he targets his search to companies related to his experience, he will be able to write with passion about those companies. For example she suggests he look for marketing or advertising internships with health clubs or nutritional supplement producers, since he’s committed to his daily gym workouts, or music organizations where he might have connections through his saxophone playing, or tennis organizations like the US Tennis Association.
I can’t recommend any sample cover letters I found online. They were stilted and awkwardly written. Laura Reston offers the best example of a great cover letter.
