You saw all kinds of things working at a restaurant. First dates. Failed dates. Proposals. Arguments. Break ups. The passing of secrets. People watching almost made up for the meager pay and the nights when few dine-ins meant less tips. Rachel was only working there until she managed to get the right role. That was something she’d been saying for years and she’d landed her fair share of commercials and done a few background characters here or there. Her boss was at least very understanding of her goals and willing to work around her auditions. It was better than she could have ever expected.
People watching was fun too, especially for someone that was trying to hone the craft of emoting emotions well on film. The best people to watch were the regulars. On them you could see the human condition. A good day or a bad day played out differently. You got to see how things changed from a change in partner or family that grew or got smaller. A small insight into their lives.
One guy, a guy that Rachel and her coworker, Casey, had named David after the Michelangelo statue, came in almost once a week. It was never on the same day, but he always ordered a medium pizza. It was always just the single pizza pie. It was always ordered over the phone and he paid in cash and nearly always left a tip in the jar.
David was a bit of a mystery, but he was so hot that she, Casey, some of the other girls, and William tried to make conversation with him if they spotted him. Sometimes, when they knew it was his order, they made the kitchen wait to put it into the oven so they could get a bit more time with him.
The problem with David was that he was hot and nice. He was tall, kinda built in a way that meant he could probably pick Rachel up without breaking a sweat. His jaw looked like it could cut glass and his cheeks were perfectly chiseled. He had an aquiline nose and on him it made absolute sense. What made it worse were his blue eyes and how sometimes his dark hair curled just a bit.
He was always friendly, greeting them with a polite hello and a smile. He was always on his own and nothing about him gave away what he did. Casey thought he was or had been military. No ring on his finger told them he was unmarried. William had once gotten the courage to ask if he was seeing anyone.
He’d gotten a crisp, “no” for his trouble.
Casey had gotten him talking sports one night and since Rachel knew nothing about sports she hadn’t been able to tell if his opinions were good or not.
Years went on like that and there was something absolutely lonely about the guy. The few times he ate in it was always on his own.
On Wednesday afternoon when it was quiet enough that even William had gotten bored enough to start rearranging the shelves under the counter, David walked in.
“Hi, how are you,” Rachel said at once. “Did you put in an order?”
“Oh. No. Last minute decision,” he said. “I almost forgot I don’t have anything to eat at home. Can I just get a medium veggie?”
“Sure,” she said. “Fifteen minutes?”
He gave a nod and took a seat at the counter. Rachel hated the counter seats because it meant having customers right within hearing distance, but she was changing her mind having David there.
He propped his head on his hand.
“Long morning?” Rachel asked.
“Yes. Very,” he said. “I was supposed to get off work — at this point — ten hours ago. So now all I want is food and sleep.”
He blinked lazily and left as soon as his food was ready.
Rachel didn’t see him again for a few more weeks and then to her surprise when he next showed up on a Saturday night, he entered with another guy. He looked like he’d put a little more effort into his clothes than usual, not that he ever showed up looking like a slob. His friend was probably equally as hot as him. He had an interesting marking over his left eye and he was cute in a more approachable way than David.
“It’s a date,” William said. “Haven’t I been saying for ages that David is gay?”
There was actually no telling if it was a date or not. Rachel hadn’t been lucky enough to have them sit in her section, but Casey was willing to recount everything she heard from the table.
So in the kitchen they all got to hear about how the not-David guy was a bit of a rambler and was giving David a lecture on sea turtles of all things. David, according to Casey, didn’t seem to mind a bit. He seemed to encourage it. So far there was no telling if they were just good friends or on a date, but one thing was for certain, they seemed to be enjoying each other’s company. They drank almost two pitchers of beer between them by the time they asked for the check.
“Rachel, he’s paying for the whole thing and he’s paying with card,” Casey whispered to her.
“They’re on a date,” William threw in. “Also, look at his name on the card.”
Rachel had to go deliver drinks to her table, so she returned after Casey had already processed the payment and returned the card to David.
“Thomas,” Casey told her. “His name is Thomas Kinard.”
Something weird did happen, then. Thomas’ friend seemed to get spooked for some reason, glancing around like everyone in the restaurant was looking at them. It wasn’t the other dinners as much as the wait staff but he didn’t seem to get clued into that. David — Thomas — was suddenly looking a bit more serious.
Rachel went to lead a couple to their table when halfway there, the guy stopped in front of David’s — Thomas’ — table and he called out, “ Tommy!”
So he went by Tommy. Rachel thought it fit him. His companion was named Buck apparently and Buck only managed to stiffen even more. Rachel didn’t hear everything that was said over the din of plates, cutlery, and conversation, but she could see that Tommy had gone a little flat. His companion looked even more panicked. They didn’t look like they even said another word to each other and then they got up to leave.
“What is happening?” William asked.
Rachel was taking care of her own table. The couple looked happy and the guy actually informed her that they’d just decided to move in together.
“That’s nice,” Rachel said distracted by watching David — damn it, his name was Tommy — walk out with Buck.
Rachel managed to sneak closer to the window to look out there and she saw them share a few words before Tommy, shoulders squared, got into a car and left his companion behind. Buck seemed frustrated by being left behind. He didn’t waste too long before he too departed.
“If it was a date,” Rachel told William and Casey later, “I don’t think it ended well.”
They saw Tommy again two weeks later. He wasn’t picking up his single pie, but two pizza pies, garlic knots, and an order of wings. He was all smiles and talked to William about having spent the day at the zoo.
“Well that was unusual,” William said.
After that he just kind of disappeared. He had either found a better pizza place or he’d given it up altogether. So, it was shocking when Tommy returned one Thursday night. He wasn’t alone. Buck, the guy he’d been eating with that one time was with him. They stood close to each other at the counter and Buck laid his hand on Tommy’s forearm. Tommy smiled at him.
Tommy smiling made him look even more gorgeous. The skin around his eyes crinkled and he had the straightest, whitest teeth. No one had ever managed to get his job out of him and Rachel was starting to wonder if he was maybe some kind of model or actor.
“So I suppose I have to thank you,” Buck was saying.
“How do you figure that?” Tommy asked.
“I think the muay thai helped a little.”
Tommy laughed. “I doubt that. But I’m glad you were quick on your feet.”
“The whole thing was nuts. Chim really saved the day catching the baby. I like when everything gets resolved in one shift.”
“I know what you mean. You’re not left wondering.”
“Exactly.”
Rachel caught Tommy’s attention. He went to pay, but Buck pushed him back and extended his card to her.
“Evan,” Tommy said.
She looked between them as Tommy finally gave a nod. Evan looked a little smug and as he signed the slip he shot her a smile.
“My boyfriend here is always trying to pay for everything,” he said.
Boyfriend, he said. So William was right and it had been a date that time they were in before. And, clearly whatever happened at the end of the last date had been resolved.
“That’s not a bad thing,” Rachel said.
“Exactly,” Tommy said.
“I’m not saying I don’t appreciate it,” Evan said and he glanced back at Tommy. “I’m just saying that you deserve to be taken care of too.”
The look that Tommy settled on Evan was one that Rachel wanted to take and keep into her back pocket because it was infatuation and fondness and maybe even love rolled into one.
They left still talking to each other and Tommy opened the door for Evan who carried their food.
After that Tommy started showing up on his own again, but there was no telling if it was because he wasn’t dating Evan anymore or what. After all, sometimes he still did pick up a single pizza pie, but other times it was two or other things from the menu. Casey did report that she’d seen Evan stop by to pick up take out once or twice and that he was nearly always distracted by his phone when he did.
It did take a while for Tommy and Evan to return together. It was, of course, on the night before Rachel’s big audition. It was for a new tv-show and for some reason they were looking for complete unknowns for the main cast. Rachel was hoping it’d be her big break. Her agent seemed to think she had a shot.
So, she was a little distracted and running lines as much as she could. She was also lucky that Casey and William were both on shift because as long as it wasn’t busy they were willing to let her take up a table and just go over the lines again. Rachel would pay them back when William needed to sit and write whatever had popped into his head or when he needed to revise something he was turning in and Casey when she had a big test or finals to study for.
Casey, as a lark, even sat them at the table next to her and winked at her. She rolled her eyes, but that didn’t stop her from eavesdropping.
“It’s horrible,” Evan said in a tone that was almost whining. “Like I expected the worst, but it’s worse than that. But we can…we can talk about something else because I don’t even want to think about Gerrard anymore. He already takes up too much of my time. Can you tell me about your day?”
“Lucy and Melton are feuding,” Tommy said. “I think he ate her sandwich by mistake a few days ago and she’s not letting it go. That’s as exciting as it gets around Harbor.”
“Other than when you’re flying a helicopter. Maybe I really should think about transferring. After all the lessons have paid off.”
“Uh…I’m not saying it’s not an option, but they kinda need you over there right now.”
Evan laughed. “I know. I know. I think Eddie is growing a mustache and I don’t know if it’s in response to Gerrard or Chris. Either way, it’s weird.”
“Evan, you can’t just say that and not have pictures.”
“He’ll probably still have it when you see him for basketball tomorrow.”
When the restaurant started getting a bit busy she had to get up and help with the takeout orders. So Tommy flew helicopters? She added that to the lore and passed the information on to William and Casey.
It was almost a week after the audition when she heard back about a call back. A chemistry read. Two more auditions and then right in the middle of grabbing a take out order to pass to a customer her phone began to ring.
“Casey, I gotta take this one.”
Considering how noisy it was inside, she ran out to the front. It was twilight, the sky shot with a bunch of different colors as the sun went down.
“Hello?”
She paced the sidewalk in front of the restaurant and listened as her agent said a lot of things that lead up to, “you got it, Rach. You got the job.”
Rachel didn’t know what noise she made, but her agent was laughing and Rachel was laughing. There may have even been some jumping up and down.
“Thank you sooo much,” Rachel said into the phone. “I can’t believe it.”
When she turned around, she saw Tommy and Evan walking out of the restaurant. They were smiling at each other, completely caught up in each other.
“I didn’t think I’d ever want to come back here,” Evan said. “It was…it was an awful first date.”
“It was not and I have no regrets.”
“Still,” Evan said.
Rachel smiled to herself as she watched them go.
Rachel didn’t think about Tommy or Evan again after that. She had finally gotten a role on an actual tv-show. Her boss at the restaurant was cool about it and let her know she could come back if she needed to. Rachel didn’t wind up needing to even if that particular tv-show lasted all of one season. The doors had been opened to her, at least, and she had steady work.
It was almost a full three years later before she stepped foot there again. William, and Casey had agreed to meet up for dinner and they decided it may as well happen where they had met and become friends in the first place.
Soon after Rachel left, Casey had finished her degree and gotten a different job. William had stuck around a little longer until the script he’d been working on for years was finally picked up. They’d always kept in contact and William had kept them informed on the regulars that he still saw right up until he left.
“Oh my god,” Casey said twenty minutes after they arrived.
“What?”
“Guess who just came in?”
Rachel almost didn’t even have to, but she turned anyway and there they were. Tommy and Evan.
They were sat a few tables away which meant they couldn’t actually listen in, but they both still looked amazing. Both were smiling easily and didn’t seem to run out of things to say to each other. There was actually something sickening in how in love they looked.
“What are the odds,” William said.
“I know,” Rachel said. “But maybe we shouldn’t be creepily watching them all night.”
Casey laughed. “I guess you know about that now.”
Rachel rolled her eyes. “I’ll die if anyone ever recognizes me from that show. One eight episode season and it was over. Haven’t had anything that big since.”
Not that she was complaining, really. She was, after all, a working actor and she’d gone to a few auditions that seemed promising. One might mean having to live in Canada for a while, but she was at a stage in her career where she wouldn’t be passing anything up.
“You will,” William said. “You’ll be the first I call if I ever get backing for my latest script.”
They were catching up and Casey was giving them the gossip at her new job when silence seemed to fall over the restaurant.
“Holy shit,” William said.
At the same time, Tommy said, “Evan, I can’t believe you. Of course. Of course, yes.”
Rachel turned at once. Evan was down on one knee next to the table and Tommy looked like he was going to start crying in his seat. In the next moment they were hugging and kissing and maybe even crying.
“Now that is a love story right there,” Casey said.
Rachel couldn’t help but think about Tommy back when they had named him David and how he had been such a constant every week or two. Always on his own, always ordering take out for one. How there had always existed a loneliness in him even while he was always kind, tipped well, and looked insanely hot. For years that had just been the norm. He never shared much about himself and small talk with him just always resulted in conversation about sports or a movie and nothing about himself.
Bringing Evan that first time had shocked them because it was outside the norm, but looking at them with their big smiles, holding hands across the table, she was happy to have witnessed even a tiny bit of their story. She was sure there was a lot more.

The Orbitron
The Orbitron is a custom car built by Ed Roth and feared lost until its rediscovery in Mexico in 2007
A second generation to Roth's original Beatnik Bandit, which was built in 1960, the Beatnik Bandit II features a one-of-a-kind fiberglass body with PPG lemon meringue pie paint, stylized Rat Fink designs on the sides, and chrome by Metal Masters of Salt Lake City, UT.
Beatnik Bandit II includes many unique design features, including an electronic console which operates the digital instrument panel and other features such as a digital readout of the car's latitude and longitude.
The lack of a rearview mirror is not a problem on this car. A "TV mirror" video monitor is mounted on the console with the actual camera mounted in the rear panel. The bubble top is also lifted electronically.
Beatnik Bandit II was built entirely by Roth, who credits "Revelations from Father in Heaven" for his achievement. The car has been shown in major U. S. cities, including Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston, as well as in Yokohama, Japan.
The Beatnik Bandit
Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth was an artist, cartoonist, illustrator, pinstriper and custom car designer and builder who created the hot-rod icon Rat Fink and other characters. Roth was a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture and hot-rod movement of the late 1950s and 1960s The Beatnik Bandit was one of his first creations from the early 1960s. It was built from a 1949 Oldsmobile, the chassis was shortened 5 feet, the Olds engine was given the classic hotrod look with GMC blower and twin carbys, everything was chromed except the blower belt. The white interior featured single joystick, that operated turning, throttle and braking. The bubble top was created using compressed air to inflate a sheet of plastic into a dome in a pizza oven. On display at the National Automobile Museum in Reno
Mysterion
Ed Roth built the Mysterion in 1963, he got the idea from the multi engine dragsters he had seen at the dragstrips. He combined two Ford engines, two transmissions, plus two welded rear ends for the foundation. It featured an offset headlight and the typical Ed Roth bubble top. On display at Galpin Auto Sports.
The Road Agent by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.
Mysterion
Custom builder and artist Ed "Big Daddy" Roth completed the Mysterion in 1963. The bubbletopped custom featured a completely original fiberglass body and twin Ford big-block engines. The weight of the engines was too much for the frame to bear, and the Mysterion fell apart. Tribute versions have been built, including this precise replica from Galpin Auto Sports.
The Surfink
The Surfink, created by Mark Glaz as a tribute to Ed Roth and Ratfink, features a large Ratfink figure atop a surfboard complete with a blown V-8 engine.
The Orbitron
Built in 1964, the vehicle was powered by a 1955 or 1956 Chevrolet V8 and was backed by a Powerglide automatic transmission. The body was hand-laid fiberglass, hiding Roth's extensive chrome work to the chassis. The cockpit, set at the extreme rear of the vehicle in the manner of a dragster, was lined with fake fur and featured an 11-inch General Electric "1-Touch" portable television inserted in the console. Topping the cockpit was a custom-made, hydraulically operated Plexiglas bubble top. One of a series of ordinary doorbell push-button switches atop the hood activated the top from the outside.
Other mechanical features included a 1956 Chevrolet rear end, dropped Ford front axle beam, Buickbrake drums and early Ford brakes. The frame was handmade of rectangular 2x4 inch steel tubing. The engine was a leftover from one of Roth's 1955 Chevrolets, having been removed to make way for a then-new Mark IV big-block given to him by General Motors. It was one of the very few completed cars Roth deemed to be a "mistake" because he felt the car did not show well since the heavily chromed engine and most of the chassis were hidden. The Orbitron was, in fact, one of his few customs to have a hood. Reportedly, the hydraulically operated hood did not fit well due to rushed fiberglass work.
The vehicle's most distinctive feature was its asymmetrical front end with red, green and blue tinted headlamps. It was thought that the three beams when combined would produce an intense white light; the idea came from the then-new medium of color television.

Day 15: vampire au/last
Kravitz is moving for possibly the last time in his very, very long life, and he ruminates a little on what got him to this point.
Read it on AO3
Barry drops another cardboard box into the growing sea of stuff in the garage. “One thing I wish I'd considered before becoming immortal was all the moving.”
“Tell me about it,” Taako says, writing his name on a piece of painter's tape and slapping it on a garbage bag of clothes. “One second I'm joining my hot ancient vampire boyfriend in his immortal curse, and next thing I know, I've moved fifteen times in the last hundred years.”
“We haven't moved fifteen times,” Kravitz skirts around him with another box. “This is only number ten.”
“That's still too many.”
He drops the box on top of Barry's. “It wasn't nearly this much work when it was just me in apartments and such. But four times the people, four times the stuff.”
Taako points at him, “this is the last time. New vamps, new start, new system. Taako can't be doing all this physical labour every couple of years for eternity.”
Barry leans against a stack of boxes. “Maybe this is why you deemed immortality a curse. You've been spending your eternal life doing one of the worst chores an adult can do.” Kravitz just shrugs. Barry says, “this'll be good. The land's nice and far from any prying eyes, and the house Magnus and Julia designed is beautiful.”
“No! More! Moves!” Taako chants.
“Okay,” Lup comes into the garage, “Magnus is on his way with the truck and reinforcements, so he'll start taking loads of stuff to the new house. Stager comes tomorrow, carpets get cleaned Wednesday, pictures Thursday, and we're in business by the weekend.”
“Let's sell this bitch,” Taako says.
A few months later, the old house has sold, and they're settling into their new, custom-built home. Kravitz is sitting out back, watching Lup and Taako argue about toppings by the pizza oven. His heart swells.
He'd been alone for so long. As far as he knew, he was the only vampire left. His life became an exhausting, monotonous dance of isolation. Running from place to place the moment he felt any whiff of suspicion in his direction. But then he met Taako. Handsome, wondrous, stubborn Taako.
Kravitz had wanted to run the moment he realised Taako had taken an interest. But when he started packing his things and looking for a new place, for the first time in centuries, he hesitated. Taako was the first interesting thing to happen to him in ages. Maybe he deserved to have a little fun.
“A little fun” quickly turned into deep, unavoidable love. So Kravitz tried to blow it up. He told Taako they couldn't be together, he walked away and blocked his number and ran. But Taako isn't so easily swayed. Through avenues that Kravitz is still in the dark about, he tracked him down and banged on his door until he was granted entry and an explanation. So Kravitz told him what he was. He told him they couldn't be together because Taako would age and Kravitz wouldn't and after a few decades he would be alone again. He didn't want to know a life of companionship if he was going to lose it in the blink of an eye.
And Taako laughed. He laughed until he had tears trickling down his face. He said, “you thought I didn't know? Babe, the moment you brought me home I knew. I don't give a fuck, all my friends are freaks.”
Kravitz met Taako's friends, and they all seemed normal to him. “Magnus?”
“Werewolf. And Julia.”
“Davenport?”
“Shapeshifter.”
“Merle?”
“Fae.”
“Lucretia?”
“Merfolk.”
Kravitz hesitates, because there's no way he's anything but human, but he has to ask, “Barry?”
“I'll give you three guesses.”
“...no.” Taako smirked. Kravitz stared at him wide-eyed. “There's absolutely no way.”
“Full blooded vampire.”
“Full blooded?!”
“The man has never had a drop of human blood in his veins.”
Kravitz pushed his hands into his hair. “I thought I was the only one left.”
Taako patted his back, “you just didn't know where to look.”
He looked at Taako. “Are you…?”
“I'm the only full human in the group.”
“What about Lup?”
“We still don't really know what she did, but she kind of Danny Phantom-ed herself and has been able to willingly shift to a phantasmal form for a few years now, so,” he shrugs, “she's human, but also maybe half dead? I try not to think about it too much.”
That conversation, as… mind blowing as it was, was the start of the rest of Kravitz's life. Taako made some very compelling arguments and convinced him to come back and try again. It was just under a year after that when he turned Taako. He was hesitant to do it, but was convinced when Taako reminded him that all his friends were immortal, and if he wasn't going to do it, he'd go to Barry, “and I'm not into him like that, so I'd rather not.”
On the back porch, watching the twins, Kravitz finally understands the concept of a forever home. Why spend eternity running when you could travel and have fun and do much more pleasant things than packing? And why not give yourself a soft place to land when you need to rest?
Barry comes outside and sits next to him, holding out a drink. “They're still at it?”
Kravitz takes it. “Yeah. Though they've moved from olives to anchovies.”
Barry chuckles and shakes his head. “I think they'll still be arguing about it when the next ice age comes around.”
Kravitz laughs, and they sit in a comfortable silence for a while. “Hey Barry. You've been around a while.”
“Sure have.”
“So you've been navigating life as an immortal for a long time. Like, almost as long as I have.”
“You've got maybe two hundred years on me, but yeah.”
“Then why the fuck did you let me move the four of us through ten houses in the last hundred years?!”
Barry laughs long and loud. He sighs. “Oh, my god,” he wipes a stray tear away, “I was wondering if you'd put that together.”
“Well?!”
“Oh, man,” he clears his throat. “You'd been on your own for so long, and set in your ways, and so afraid of being discovered, we thought it'd be best to do things your way for a while. To let you get used to us and the group and what have you.”
Kravitz narrows his eyes. Barry bites his lip like he's trying not to laugh again. “There's more. Spill it, Bluejeans.”
“Lup and I made a bet on how many moves Taako could go through before it got to him.” He takes a sip of his drink. “I won, for once.”
Kravitz considers this. “What'd you win?”
He smirks. “You don't want to know.”
“Ugh!” Kravitz stands. “Gross, I don't want to know about your sex bets.”
“I didn't say anything about sex!”
“A non answer is still an answer,” he turns to go back inside, “next time just lie and say money!”
Barry shouts after him, “this is your life forever now!”

More whining about enshittification
A friend and I are planning to go camping shortly, and this got me looking for some stuff I kinda want but don't need.
Now, a very useful tool for camp cooking - well, when you're not doing backpacking, which is a different beat - is the Dutch oven, or as it was known historically, the camp kettle.
This is a very old design, used for baking when an oven was not available. The legs allow it to be set on coals without burning the food inside. The high rim on the lid allows you to shovel coals on the list and thus have even heat throughout, and the wire handle makes it relatively easy to use a hook to move the entire thing off the fire. As far as I'm aware this design has not changed in centuries.
(Mind, there's a household version of the dutch oven which lacks many of these features, as they get in the way when you are actually in a kitchen, but those are comparatively modern)
Now, using this isn't too hard but you do want some additional tools. If you're baking in it, you do want a baking pan which will fit inside, and a trivet to keep the pan from resting directly on the bottom of the kettle. As so happens I have those already.
The other thing you want is what in my youth we called dutch oven pliers. They're bent pliers, like channel locks, but more bent and without the adjustment grooves. They also have a built-in hook on one of the handles so you can hook the wire handle.
With these pliers you can lift the entire kettle, grab the lid, and take baking pan out of the hot kettle. They're simple but convenient.'
I have been able to find them for sale at one Boy Scout store. In Barbados. There are some ebay listings, but those are long gone.
Instead when I search for dutch oven pliers I get three things:
Pizza tray pliers
These are sorta-ish able to remove the baking pan from the kettle. But notice they're actually made for moving flat baking trays. They are also generally made for small hands - uncomfortable for me in the best of times, utterly unusable if I'm wearing welding gloves, as I might if I'm handling cast iron over a campfire.
These weird not-trivet things
What the heck are THESE? They're too tall to use as a trivet inside the dutch oven, they're not really effective for pliers. I have no idea what they're supposed to accomplish, but I'm pretty sure they're bad at it.
And the most popular result: the "dutch oven lid lifter"
Okay, I'll give you. This does exactly one thing, and it's solidly mediocre at it. It's an awkward shape for anything but "I am standing in the open, facing directly at the campfire, and wish to lift the lid straight up while having sufficient arm strength to lift a several kilo chunk of cast iron from half a meter away." But if you meet all of those conditions, sure, I guess. It does nothing else.
None of these items approach the versatility of those dutch oven pliers we had in my youth. And it's vexingly difficult to even show those pliers ever even existed.
One major promise of the Internet was that we could always find obscure things. That if your small town does not have a store which sells dutch oven pliers then you could simply go online and order it.
But capitalism is not centered around giving customers what they want. Why sell one convenient tool which will last forever when you can sell three junk tools which don't quite work?
And so I know exactly what I want, know it has existed in the past, and cannot find it. Because our hellscape does not want to sell me the thing I want.

Chapter 16: Notte fredda
Trigger warning for violence.
Gustavo shivered. Even with the pizzeria's heat at full blast, the intense cold outside still blew in every time a door opened. In all his years, he'd never seen anything like it. He finally gave up and walked to the break room to get his coat. Poor Fake was stuck downstairs most of the time, afraid of freezing up. They and the Toppins were huddled around a space heater, bundled in blankets. Brando and Peppino came in shivering every day - riding a scooter in this cold was a penance. Even Brick, thick as her fur was, was wearing extra clothing.
What was worse was the chill mist that rolled in off the sea every night - and sometimes during the day. It slowly coated everything in ice. They took turns going out and breaking the ice off everything. Business was still steady, and the customers were loathe to leave. Every business was essentially a shelter right now. Peppino, in a fit of foresight, had ordered a shipment of hot packs, and they were selling as well as the pizzas.
Gustavo huddled in front of the pizza ovens. If this doesn't break soon, I don't know what people are doing to do...
~~~~
Peppino huddled at the counter. He hadn't even bothered taking off his coat. Mio Dio, what is going on with this weather? He'd thought about telling Brando to stay home until it warmed up, but the boy had insisted. Got to admire his conviction, but... this is torturous! The boy wandered among the customers, asking if everything was fine, smiling and reassuring them. He'd taken well to helping people, and Peppino was pleased with his attitude. He'll be a fine proprietor one day. Of course, Peppino knew that all the moving around was keeping the boy warm, too.
Peppino rubbed his hands together. He'd understand if he was keeping the heat turned down, like he had during leaner times, but it was full blast. Apparently everyone was having the same problem - the heat just didn't seem to cut through the cold entirely. It's uncanny. The government had even declared a national emergency, shipping heaters and other supplies to the area. Power companies were reinforcing the power grid, trying to stay ahead of the demand. Allowances were being applied to electrical bills.
Brando walked up to the counter. "Three more orders, signore," he said. Peppino sighed inwardly. While he'd made great strides in relaxing, Brando still insisted on calling him "sir." You are actually his teacher, Pino, he reminded himself, he's right to do so.
Peppino just couldn't shake feeling like he didn't deserve it.
Peppino memorized the orders, nodded, and stepped back to give them to Gus. The little gnome was practically dancing in front of the ovens, trying to keep warm. "Gus, go-a downstairs with Fake for a while. It's-a warm down there. I can handle-a this, Brando can handle the dining room."
Gus looked at him, a mixture of gratitude and stubbornness on his face, but he nodded and went downstairs. Peppino removed his gloves, gathering materials to start prepping the orders. I don't know how much longer people can stand this. We're not built for it.
~~~~
That night, as Peppino wiped down the counter, he tried not to shiver at the cold water's touch. He'd sent Brando and Gus home. No reason for them to suffer any more.
His phone rang. Giuseppe's ringtone? He picked up quickly. "Pronto?"
"Pino, I just got a message from... an old friend." The tension in Giuseppe's voice was palpable. "They said something's started appearing outside at night, in this mist. Are you still at the pizzeria?"
Peppino twitched. "Uh, sì. I'm-a just closing up. Did-a they say what?"
"No, they didn't. They didn't have much, but..." Giuseppe paused. "This person... They wouldn't have contacted me if it wasn't serious. Whatever it is, it's dangerous. I'm calling the police after you. I'd be willing to bet it's something to do with Pizzahead."
Peppino broke out in a sweat. What the hell is that damn pizza up to now? "Thank you, fratello. I'll keep-a my eyes open. Be careful yourself. Being-a who you are, if Pizzahead is back, he might-a come after you, too."
"Oh, don't I know it." Peppino could imagine the grim smirk on his brother's face. "He'll have as much trouble out of me as he did with you. Just... be careful. Ciao."
"Ciao." As Peppino close the call, he realized just how disturbed he was. Giuseppe has almost literally been to hell and back. The concern in his voice had been deep. And who was this mysterious contact?
He shook his head. It doesn't matter. I should tell Fake. Locking the front door, he walked into the basement. Fake was standing in the middle, a look of deep consternation on his warped features - the Toppins were all running around, wildly agitated. How in the hell did I miss this? "Ay! AY, CONDIMENTI! STAI ZITTO!"
All of them stopped and looked at him. He'd never seen them look so... angry. "Cosa c'è che non va, condimenti?"
Mushroom immediately jumped onto Peppino's shoulder, chittering wildly. It climbed up on top of his hat, hopping up and down. Pineapple looked up, dropping its sunglasses. "Bad! Bad coming! We feel it!"
Peppino shivered. "How do you know that?"
Cheese spun in a circle. "We feel it! Don't know how! Bad! BIG bad coming! Worse than Pizzahead!"
Peppino and Fake looked at each other in shock. "Worse than Pizzahead?" Peppino mouthed.
Fake shook their head. "They just suddenly started up a few minutes ago. We don't know why. But something tells us we should trust them on this."
Peppino shivered, this time with a chill in the soul. Two warnings, from two different directions. Something's very wrong.
Someone knocked on the door upstairs.
"Wha... who would be out in this cold, this late?" Peppino quickly hopped up the stairs, and jogged into the dining room.
Vigilante was outside, looking stern and beating on the door.
"Mio Dio, Vigi," he said as he unlocked the door, "what are you doing out in this desolazione?"
The sheriff seemed even more surly than usual. "Need you to come with me, Peppino. Something important's going on."
"Sì, sì, sceriffo, I have heard something is wrong. Let me just... close up..."
The cheeseslime seemed antsy as Peppino closed down. "Hurry up, Peppino!"
"I am hurrying!" Peppino said testily, his temper rising. "I'm-a not just going to leave-a my shop standing open, even for you!" Something was setting off alarm bells in his head, but he wasn't sure what. He ushered Vigilante out and turned to lock the door.
"Wait." Peppino stopped and turned to the cheeseslime. "Vigi, where's your coat?"
Vigilante huffed. "We don't have time for that, this is important."
"More important than-a the fact cheeseslimes freeze faster than humans?" Peppino countered. "You should-a be a cheesesicle by now in this. And where's-a your accent gone?" He poked the cheeseslime. "OK, stronzo, who are you?"
Suddenly Peppino heard a horrible noise behind him. Fake and the Toppins were standing in the doorway. The Toppins were all shrieking, and Fake was hissing as they assumed their combat form.
Shocked, Peppino turned back around.
The thing who he'd thought was Vigilante was growing, deforming, the hat falling away. The air filled with a smell worse than the foulest limburghese. One eye sank in. More arms sprouted. The creature made a sickening gurgle. It was larger even than Fake now, and the clone was hissing defiance but clearly terrified. Its skin developed moldy blotches all over, and it seemed to bubble and churn inside.
Peppino froze in terror.
Suddenly, across the road, Peppino heard the whump of a large munition being launched. "DOWN!" Peppino shrieked as he dove to the ground. Fake hunkered down, shielding the Toppins.
The monster exploded, stinking cheese flying everywhere.
Across the street, the real Vigilante stood, swaddled in clothes, his bazooka smoking on his shoulder. "PEPPINO! GET AWAY FROM THAT THING!"
Before anyone could move, the mass of cheese sprouted tentacles, roaring like a mad beast. It swiped at Peppino, but his fear had already activated his speed - he darted away, quickly shoving Fake and the Toppins back inside. He rushed back out.
Several of the tentacles had grabbed Vigi, and as Peppino watched in horror, one grabbed the cheeseslime's arm and casually ripped it off.
"VIGI!" Peppino cried out. Suddenly fear turned to rage. He leapt upward, daring gravity to stop him, grabbed the mass of tentacles, and wrenched them off.
Peppino rushed over and grabbed Vigi, taking him inside. The sheriff was moaning in pain. Peppino tossed Fake his phone. "Call the police! Tell them what's going on!"
The slime monster squealed. Several more tentacles lashed at him, but he was far too fast for it now. He pummeled it from every direction, slashing bits of it off with chops and slashes of his hands and fingers. Every time a tentacle flailed his way, he either dodged it or ripped it off. It flung some of its stinking body at him, but Peppino simply ducked aside. Within seconds the creature was a pile of quivering, gooey bits.
Struggling to shrink down to their normal form, they growled assent.
Peppino rushed back outside. The bits were quivering their way back together. It's reforming! What IS this thing?? He frantically searched his memory for cheeseslime weaknesses. Cold and... fire! He rushed back inside, charged downstairs, found a canister of flammable cleaner, grabbed his firestarter, and ran back.
The thing was almost back together. He could see its single eye already glaring bloody murder at him.
Peppino opened the canister and lit his firestarter. "BRUCIARE!" He chucked both at the thing, and instantly it burst into flame.
The shrieking was awful, the smell even worse. The creature frantically flailed around, even hopping into the air in a desperate attempt to crush him, but Peppino dashed away. The impact shook the whole area, cracking the pavement and creating a small crater. Peppino stumbled, and a flaming tentacle lashed his way. Catching it, Peppino tried not to shriek as his hand burned. Ripping the tentacle off, the burning cheese stuck to his hand, and he frantically scraped the gooey mess off on the concrete. Finally, the horrific thing shuddered, and slumped to the ground, dead.
Peppino clutched his scraped, burned hand and stared at the burning corpse. His adrenaline finally dropped enough for the fear to come back. "CHE CAZZO ERA QUELLO??"he shrieked. He looked around - he saw terrified faces in nearly every window. Several were holding phones, either recording the monster or calling someone. Hopefully the police. "Don't-a come out!! Call the police if-a you haven't already!"
Then Peppino remembered. "VIGI!" He spun and ran back inside. The cheeseslime was laying where he'd dropped him. "Oh Mio Dio," Peppino said as he kneeled beside him, "Vigi! Your arm-!"
Fake came back with a large block of cheese, and handed it to Vigilante, who swallowed it whole. He winced and laid back. "Long... as I... get... some cheese in... me... losin'... an arm shouldn't... kill me." He turned, one eye closed in pain, towards Peppino. "What... was that... thing?"
Peppino shook his head. "I don't-a know. It looked like-a you at first, then when I questioned it, it turned-a into...that. How did you know, Vigi?"
The cheeseslime closed his eyes. "One'a my people reported seeing me out and about, when they knew I wasn't. They called me... an' I followed a hunch."
Peppino heard sirens in the distance. Shortly, an ambulance and several police cars rolled up, and a medical team took the wounded sheriff.
The police, of course, had more to do.
As Peppino and Fake gave their statements, Peppino started examining the whole thing. "Some-a-how, the Toppins knew something was-a wrong, before-a that thing ever showed up." He turned to Cheese. "Can you feel anything else-a bad right now?"
Cheese turned from side to side, then hopped lightly. "Bad still around, but not here. Not close."
The officer nodded. "We're getting reports from La Crosta of more of these things turning up. Cheeseslimes, Verdurans... and a few Humans." The shook their head. "You were lucky, Mr. Spaghetti. There have been deaths reported."
Peppino went white. "Oh Mio Dio. How-a many?"
The officer frowned. "Thankfully, not many. Mainly people in shady areas they shouldn't have been. There's a general curfew in place now, but we'll make an exception for all of you for now. Excuse me, please."
As the officer stepped away, Peppino quickly grabbed his phone and dialed his mother. Please, please...
The phone picked up on the third ring. "Peppino? Your brother just called. What's going on? Something about deadly monsters in the streets?"
"Grazie il Dio, Mama, I'm-a so glad you're OK." He sighed, relaxing visibly. Hopefully that means Seppe is Ok, too. "Sì, Mama, let me explain..."
A few minutes later, Margherita spoke. "Madre di Dio, ragazzo, I hope your friend will be OK. And you are well? And your friends? And your pizzeria?"
"So far, Mama. Stay inside, of course. I'm-a sure the police are out in force now." He thought for a moment. "Didn't you tell me the other day a Toppin had taken to you?"
"Sì, a cute little salsiccia. It grumbles constantly, but tonight it seemed frantic. Now I know why. So, watch the Toppins, eh? Clever little condimenti. I know Mushroom stays with you, Peppino. Keep it close."
"Sì, Mama, I was thinking the same thing. Ciao." Just as Peppino hung up, he saw Giuseppe come in, clothes messy, his right arm in a sling. "Fratello, what happened?"
Giuseppe winced, but smiled and gave a thumbs-up. "One of those monsters happened. Scared the shit out me. Looked like a giant Pepperman. Caught me outside dumping my trash. Had me in a bear hug, pretty sure it cracked a bone in my arm. I managed to break free, then ran through it."
Peppino paused. "Through it?"
Giuseppe smiled. "Don't think I've accelerated that quick in decades. Blew a hole through it, then when it started to reform... well," he looked outside at the scorched pile, "it looks like we had the same idea after that. Called Mama, then came to check on you."
"We're -a OK, Seppe, but Vigi is in the hospital. That thing tore-a his arm off."
Giuseppe paled. "Santa Maria. Guess that was the ambulance I saw leaving."
Suddenly Sausage leapt up onto Giuseppe's left shoulder, grumbling loudly. "Well, why are you suddenly so forward?"
"Somehow the Toppins can-a sense these things, Seppe," Peppino said. "I think Sausage intends to go with you."
"Well, I won't say no to an early-warning system." He looked at Peppino. "I guess this is what my friend was hearing about. Or is this just the beginning?"
As the police turned to Giuseppe to take his statement, Peppino called Gustavo.
"No, Peppino, we didn't run into anything, but Brick seemed like she was worried about something. Wonder if she can do the same thing the Toppins can? Doesn't matter, really. We'll keep our eyes open. Hey, I'll call Brando and warn him, too. Since he's working with us he might get targeted, too. You guys be careful, eh? Ciao."
As Peppino hung up again, a large, dark truck pulled up outside, and several familiarly-attired people jumped out. One of the police groaned. "Oh, great, the Spooks are here."
Giuseppe quirked an eyebrow, and the man cringed. "Present company accepted, sir."
Giuseppe stared the man down, and finally spoke. "I trained most of those "spooks," officer. If they're here, they're here to help. Now's not the time for inter-service rivalry."
"Yes, sir," the officer said meekly as a few of the soldiers came in. The man in the front, a mustachioed man with graying hair, spoke. "Bonne soirée, Major Spaghetti. How badly are you hurt?"
Giuseppe shrugged, then winced slightly. "Just a cracked bone, Louis. Could have been a lot worse. And just call me Giuseppe, I retired. Guessing you brought in Forensics?"
The man nodded. "Just a matter of respect, sir. And oui. There are other teams as well, helping clean up this mess. But... how did you all know? Nearly everyone else that was attacked was killed, or severely injured."
Giuseppe shrugged. "I had some forewarning from... an old friend."
The man frowned. "How did they know, Major? That sounds suspicious. Who are they?"
Giuseppe stood straight. "Afraid I can't tell you that, Louis. I made a promise."
The Frenchman looked angry. "Be that as it may, they could have vital information. If you are retired, you have no right to withhold it."
Giuseppe's faced grew stormy. "Go careful, Louis. You're on thin ice."
The Frenchman grew equally as red-faced. "And I cannot believe you would hold back for something as flimsy as a promise."
"Why, you borioso, arrogante-!"
"Enough!" A voice called out it behind them. Everyone jumped. In the doorway was a short woman, black hair streaked with gray, wearing a black combat suit. "Thanks, Sepp, but I'm not gonna see you get yourself arrested for me. It was me, Louis. I told him."
The Frenchman went pure white in the face. Several of the other agents were staring. "Oh, mon dieu. Lieutenant Morelli. La Petite Mort. You're alive?"
The woman walked forward like a cat. "Alive, well, and ready to tell you what I know."
Peppino leaned to his brother. "La Petite Mort?"
Giuseppe chuckled. "You know how my callsign was "Hellrunner?" That's Anita, mine and Gustavo's old partner. Her's was "Little Death." She's just as infamous in Special Operations as I was. Moreso, really." He chuckled wickedly. "Everyone considered me the nice one."
Peppino thought about that. With our temper, that's saying a lot. This woman is probably incredibly dangerous.
Anita ignored the agents as if they were noisy children. "After I called you, Sepp, I heard a major commotion at that pepper's studio. Found him dueling with a giant copy of himself. I helped him take it out. He's fine, by the way." She flipped her hair, and her eye twitched. "Come on, you lot. Leave the wounded to recuperate, let's see what we can find out."
The agents followed her outside without a word.
"Didn't you say she quit?" Peppino said.
Giuseppe's malevolent smile had never wavered. "Anita has a way of commanding people even when she doesn't actually have the authority to do so." He sat down, and Peppino joined him. Fake crouched next to the table. "Let's go over what we know-"
No sooner had they sat down before they heard a roar of jet exhaust, and Noise rolled up outside. He brushed past the police. "Already gave my statement, officer, I'm here for them."
As he walked over, Peppino saw Noise had a huge, fang-toothed expression of pure rage. Even when he tried to kill me he didn't look like that. "Noise? What's-a happened?"
The Noise growled. "What happened was one of those things attacked NTV. Looked like him," he pointed at Fake, "but bigger and meaner. Killed some of my guards, and attacked Noisette."
Both of them stood up, and Fake stood to their full height, growling angrily. "Mio Dio! Is she all right?" Peppino said.
The Noise's expression turned into an evil grin. "A few cuts and bruises, and a concussion, they said. She walloped that thing, then I gave it a mouthful of bombs." He tossed a particularly nasty-looking Noise Bomb into the air. "They're still cleaning the mess off the walls. Saw them bring Vigi in the hospital."
They said back down. "This wasn't some random attack, then. It was a warning. A message," Giuseppe said.
Peppino looked grim. "Sì. He's after all of-a us, then. Not just me. Any-a-one to do with-a the Tower."
All four of them looked outside, at a town full of people who were now targets. What do we do now?
Noise tucked the bomb away, sniffed, and grinned. "I know one thing, fat man, I ain't lettin' ol' Pizzamug destroy what we got here now." He looked around. "Place has kinda grown on me." He looked at Peppino. A look that was almost friendly crossed Noise's face, and he stuck a thumb at his skinny chest. "And only I get t'mess with you."
Peppino grinned. "For-a once, we're in agreement, you little-a bastard. Let's-a find this stronzo."
Fake growled. "We feel the same. We will help as much as we can." They growled again. "And if we find him... we will kill him."
Giuseppe nodded. "I know I wasn't here for the beginning of all this, but this is my home now, too. And this could spread way beyond Tower Town." He cracked his neck. "I'll get in touch with some of my old crew, see what they can find. No one threatens my family." His face grew bright red. "NO ONE."

South Sound breweries SIG and Triceratops expand distribution via River Barrel River Barrel Distributing.
Press Release
River Barrel Distributing continues to grow its list of Pacific Northwest breweries with the addition of Triceratops Brewing Company and Sig Brewing Company. Both are family-run breweries based in Washington.
Triceratops Brewing was begun by partners Rob and Kelly Horn. Originally from Flemington, NJ, the Horns moved to Olympia, WA and opened their own brewery in August 2014 after years of home brewing. Triceratops’ operations began in the family’s garage and with the last name Horn, the brewery name was an easy choice. Three years later, the Horns opened a tasting room in Tumwater and have had a steady flow of great customers, good friends, and craft beer lovers.
“We’re very happy to add Triceratops to our list,” says River Barrel Distributing Sales Manager Joe Cohen. “Rob and Kelly brew clean, classic styles that appeal to a wide market of beer drinkers.”
To date, Triceratops Brewing has earned four medals at the Washington Beer Awards for their Hawthorne Coffee Milk Stout, Pennsyltucky Vienna-style Lager, Revival Coffee and Motors Coffee Milk Stout, and Bohemian Raspberry Golden Ale.
Three varieties Cohen is looking forward to sharing with the Western Washington area are:
Collin James Irish Red Ale - Low in alcohol and bitterness, this Irish Red Ale is a well-balanced people pleaser. Lightly hopped with the mild, earthy, and somewhat woody Fuggle variety, this beer entices the nose with a rich, toffee-like aroma. Meanwhile, notes of plum and raisin play with a slightly bready and nutty flavor provided by Irish ale malt and a touch of roasted barley.
Liquid Swords IPA - We launched our popular rotating IPA series back in 2016, and by drawing on the wide variety of expressive hop varieties available to brewers, haven’t made the same beer since. Hazy or bright, fruity or piney, no two Chambers are alike, and they never last long.
Pennsyltucky Vienna-Style Lager - This smooth, Vienna-style lager is inspired by the brewing traditions of Central Pennsylvania. Caramunich malt gives this classic style a nice, roasty flavor while the Cluster hops provide a little bite and a touch of earthy bitterness.
About 30 miles NE of Triceratops’ taproom is Sig Brewing Company. Begun in 2020, the family-owned location in Tacoma’s Historic Brewing District offers beers of nearly every style as well as a full menu of brick oven pizza.
“We love craft beer and are very proud to be part of its local community,” says John Samuelson, Sig Brewing Founder . We were fortunate enough to hire a talented head brewer in Jeff Stokes and opened our doors in the spring of 2020. Our goal was to differentiate ourselves in as many ways as possible including our beers, food, and taproom.”
Sig Brewing focuses on experimental varieties including fermented and soured beers as well as hoppy beers and pilsners. Three brands that will be distributed by River Barrel include:
Experimental Nectar IPA – A hazy/juicy IPA brewed with 2-row, wheat, and pilsner malts in tandem with some flaked oats and brown sugar. Mash hopped with NZ Cascade, whirlpooled with Nectaron, and DDH'd with a blend of Hopsteiner's EXP 17701 and 17704 hops. Fermented with Omega Yeast's Cosmic Punch yeast.
In Rainbows IPA – An unfiltered American IPA brewed with 2-row, special pale, and spitz malt coupled with a touch of flaked oats. Kettle hopped with Bravo and Citra, and DDH'd with Mosaic and Comet. The perfect IPA for gazing at rainbows. Fermented with Omega Yeast OYL-005 Irish Ale strain.
Pilscifer: A New American Pilsner - Built on a malt base of pilsner malt with a touch of corn, wheat, oats, and vienna malt thrown in. We then kettle hopped Pilscifer with Adeena and dry hopped it with El Dorado. Crispy with a new world fruit flare and fermented with Fermentis 34/70 Lager yeast.
“I'm excited to be on board with River Barrel and hope that we can continue to push boundaries and grow our brand through this partnership,” says Stokes. “I am most excited about growing our lager program and our barrel aged portfolio over time, but also happy to have the opportunity to get our core beers into a much wider array of spots!”
River Barrel Distributing serves the Western Washington counties of King, Pierce, Thurston, Lewis, Snohomish, Kitsap, and Grays Harbor.

Outdoor Kitchens for Every Budget: Finding the Right Fit
An outdoor kitchen is a fantastic addition to any home, transforming your backyard into an entertainment hub and giving you the freedom to cook and dine outside. Whether you're planning to host a BBQ with friends, enjoy family meals, or simply relax while cooking, an outdoor kitchen brings convenience, style, and functionality to your outdoor space. But just like with any home improvement project, it's important to find a design that works for your budget. So, how do you choose the perfect outdoor kitchen for your home?
Understanding Your Budget and Needs
Before you dive into creating your dream outdoor kitchen, it's essential to understand your budget and what you want out of the space. Outdoor kitchens can range from simple setups with a basic grill and counter to more elaborate designs with built-in refrigerators, sinks, pizza ovens, and custom cabinetry. The key is to prioritize what you need most and what will truly enhance your cooking experience. Here’s a breakdown of the basic budget categories for outdoor kitchens:
Entry-Level Outdoor Kitchen ($5,000 - $10,000) If you’re working with a smaller budget but still want an outdoor kitchen, an entry-level design can provide the essentials. You can get a good-quality grill, some countertops for prepping food, and a small bar area. This kind of setup is perfect for casual cooking and entertaining without breaking the bank. It allows you to have a dedicated cooking space outside without investing too much into fancy features.
Mid-Range Outdoor Kitchen ($10,000 - $25,000) For those with a bit more flexibility in their budget, a mid-range outdoor kitchen offers more versatility. You might include a larger grill, a side burner for sauces and soups, and even an outdoor refrigerator or storage for keeping drinks cold. With this budget, you can opt for premium materials like granite or quartz for the countertops and invest in a more durable, weather-resistant setup. This type of outdoor kitchen balances quality and price while offering a high-end cooking experience.
High-End Outdoor Kitchen ($25,000 and up) If you’re looking for the ultimate outdoor kitchen, there are no limits to what you can do. From built-in pizza ovens and full-service bars to custom cabinetry and top-of-the-line appliances, this is the dream outdoor kitchen for those who entertain often and want a luxurious space. Whether it’s a multi-burner grill, dual refrigerators, or a high-end smoker, this setup will be a statement piece in your yard and elevate your cooking game to the next level.
Choosing the Right Materials
When it comes to materials, there are plenty of options to choose from that can fit various budgets. For a more affordable setup, stainless steel is an excellent option for appliances and cabinetry, as it’s durable, weather-resistant, and stylish. On the other hand, premium materials like stone, granite, and custom cabinetry will add elegance and sophistication to your outdoor space.
If you’re looking for something that’s built to last without the hefty price tag, consider a hybrid approach. For instance, you could use a combination of stone for the countertops and durable stainless steel for appliances and storage.
Maximizing Functionality and Style
Even with a smaller budget, you can still create a functional and stylish outdoor kitchen. Think about how you want to use the space. Do you plan to cook often, or will it be more of a social area? For those who love to grill, make sure you have a quality grill, ample counter space for prepping food, and storage for utensils and spices. If you like to entertain, a bar area with stools can add a welcoming vibe to your outdoor gatherings.

By assessing your business needs, including order volume and menu offerings, you can identify the best second-hand pizza equipment to enhance your kitchen’s efficiency and profitability.
Maximizing the Value of Second-Hand Pizza Equipment
To ensure you get the most out of your investment in second-hand pizza ovens, follow these tips:
Source from Trusted Sellers: Work with reputable suppliers who specialize in pizza-making equipment for sale. This ensures that the equipment has been inspected, tested, and maintained to meet quality standards.
Inspect Thoroughly: Before purchasing, thoroughly inspect the oven for signs of wear, damage, or potential issues. An expert assessment can assist you in ascertaining if the equipment is functioning properly.
Consider Warranties and Support: Some sellers offer warranties or maintenance support for used equipment. These can provide additional peace of mind and protect your investment.
Plan for Maintenance: Regular cleaning and servicing will keep your second-hand pizza equipment running smoothly and extend its lifespan, ensuring continued savings over time.

Dough-Raising Success: Choosing the Right Point of Sale System for Pizza Restaurant
Proper technology is the real difference in pizza restaurants between smooth operation and topping disaster. Be prepared to be up to your neck in orders during that dreaded dinner rush; a Point of Sale system will need to come through with lightning speed, quickly managing all the combinations possible with those toppings and continuing to keep customers coming in for more. That is where finding the best Point of Sale System for Pizza Restaurant comes into play in a major crustal role!
Understanding the Ingredients of a Superior Point of Sale System
Ease of Use: The User-Friendly Interface
Your staff needs to move quickly — but not at the expense of making mistakes. A Point of Sale (POS) system for pizza restaurants must be user-friendly and intuitive. Touchscreen menus with easy-to-navigate interfaces allow staff to take orders swiftly and accurately, ensuring every pizza goes out with the right toppings and the perfect cheese-to-sauce ratio.
Customization: The Menu Options Flexible
Customization is the bread and butter of a good Point of Sale system for your pizza restaurants. With so many combinations involving crusts, sauces, cheeses, and toppings, a Point of Sale system for your pizza restaurants has to be able to handle your complex menu. Watch out for systems that can customize orders on the fly, adjust prices on the fly, and add modifiers like an extra cheese topping or a gluten-free crust request.
Speed and Efficiency: Oven-Hot Performance
Speed is what wins at pizza. The ideal Point of Sale system ensures that orders are processed speedily so that they go directly to the kitchen. Integrated tools such as the kitchen display screens keep the cook-staff in an organized manner so that each and every order bakes fresh for pick-up or delivery right on time.
Adding Value to Sales: Marketing and Loyalty Programs
Hitting Power of Data: Recipe to Repeat Business
A good Point of Sale is not just about transaction processing is a strong tool for business, as it can do anything to grow the business. Even with built-in features by CRM, you can pull off fantastic data that shall help you create personalized offers and target marketing to take casual customers into loyal followers.
Customer Retention- Loyalty Program Secret Sauce
Rewarding your customers for loyalty can keep them coming back for another slice. A Point of Sale system that enables loyalty programs and tracks points or rewards can create a customized experience, building a community of pizza enthusiasts who feel valued and appreciated.
Keeping the Dough Rolling: Inventory and Staff Management
Accurate inventory tracking: The PepperoNeat System
Wasting waste ingredients is like throwing money in the trash. A good Point of Sale system should be able to have capabilities for robust inventory management such that you can track every ounce of pepperoni and every ball of dough. Then you'll get real-time feedback so you can order more supplies before you're at the bottom of the sauce barrel.
Scheduling and Staff Management: The Efficient team build
But the right Point of Sale will help you better manage your crew of pizza fanatics. Features that ensure the scheduling of the right staff, coupled with time-tracking functions, guarantee you get enough workers when the dinner crowd sets in, saving you from the chaos of not enough and overstaffing at once.
Analytics: The Crunchy Crust of Decisions
Data is the king in the restaurant business and with such a great reporting feature in Point of Sale it allows you to know which are the menu items that have hotness, as well as the peak selling times. This information gives room for decisions that go right as the bottom line also does.
Upgrades and Support: The Ever-Evolving Pizzeria
Lastly, think of the future. Think about vendors that provide software updates, technical support, and hardware that can grow with your pizzeria. A Point of Sale system up-to-date with technological trends will keep your restaurant running smoothly, minimize downtime, and keep your focus on crafting the perfect pie.
Conclusion: It's Time to Take Your Pizza Game to the Next Level
A Point of Sale system for pizza restaurants should be more than just doing a transaction. It is an integration that is going to streamline your processes, delight customers, and raise the dough you are selling pizzas and your cash register. A good system allows you to manage the rush, have customers coming back for more, and slice the competition into thin slices.

Deck Design Trends from San Jose’s Top Builders
When it comes to outdoor living, the deck is often the centerpiece of your backyard — a place where family and friends gather, a space for relaxation, or even a spot to entertain guests. As outdoor spaces gain more importance, deck design trends in San Jose have evolved to reflect changing tastes and technological advancements. Whether you're building a new deck or updating an old one, understanding the latest trends from San Jose’s top deck builders can help you create a stylish and functional outdoor retreat. Here are some of the top trends you can expect from the best deck builders in San Jose.
1. Sustainable Decking Materials
Sustainability is a big focus for San Jose homeowners, and deck builders are responding by offering eco-friendly decking materials. Composite decking, made from a blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, is gaining popularity because it’s durable, low-maintenance, and environmentally friendly. Additionally, many homeowners are opting for sustainably sourced wood such as bamboo or reclaimed lumber to reduce their carbon footprint. These materials not only help preserve the environment but also offer a sophisticated look that complements modern homes.
2. Multi-Level Decks for Versatility
San Jose’s diverse landscape, with its hills and varied elevations, makes multi-level decks a popular design choice. Multi-level decks allow homeowners to create distinct zones for different activities such as dining, lounging, or even gardening. A raised deck can provide beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, while a lower level can serve as a cozy retreat. Deck builders in San Jose are increasingly designing multi-level decks to make the most of available space and enhance the functionality of outdoor living areas.
3. Integrated Lighting
Deck lighting is no longer just about safety — it's about enhancing the ambiance and functionality of your outdoor space. LED lighting is a popular choice because of its energy efficiency and versatility. San Jose deck builders are incorporating integrated lighting into railings, steps, and even within the decking itself to create a soft, inviting glow. These lights can highlight specific areas of the deck, like a grilling station or seating nook, and ensure that your deck is usable even after dark. With smart lighting options, you can also control the brightness and color from your phone, adding another layer of customization to your outdoor oasis.
4. Built-In Seating
Gone are the days of bulky patio furniture scattered around your deck. The latest trend in deck design is built-in seating. San Jose’s top builders are designing custom benches, loungers, and even integrated dining seating that fits seamlessly into the structure of the deck. Not only does this provide a clean, polished look, but it also maximizes space, offering ample seating without cluttering your outdoor area with extra furniture. You can choose from sleek, minimalist designs or go for more ornate built-ins that add character to your deck.
5. Outdoor Kitchens and Barbecues
For many homeowners in San Jose, the deck is an extension of their living space — and that includes cooking and dining areas. Outdoor kitchens and barbecue stations are becoming a staple feature of modern decks. San Jose deck builders are integrating full kitchens with built-in grills, sinks, refrigerators, and even pizza ovens. If you're an avid entertainer or love grilling, this feature can elevate your deck, providing the perfect space for cooking and socializing. These outdoor cooking stations are not only functional but also stylish, with sleek counters and high-end finishes that mimic the elegance of indoor kitchens.
6. Minimalist and Modern Designs
Simplicity is the key to modern deck design in San Jose. Clean lines, open spaces, and minimalistic layouts are trending. Top deck builders are focusing on creating sleek, modern decks with less clutter and more space for relaxation. Using neutral colors, such as gray, black, and natural wood tones, can enhance the minimalist vibe while offering a sophisticated look that complements contemporary homes. This style is ideal for homeowners who prefer an understated, yet elegant outdoor space that blends well with their overall home design.
7. Smart Deck Technology
With the rise of smart homes, it's no surprise that deck design trends are also embracing technology. From smart lighting systems that adjust automatically to changes in the environment to built-in speakers for music and integrated Wi-Fi for streaming, deck builders in San Jose are offering a range of tech-savvy options for modern outdoor living. Smart decks also include remote-controlled pergolas and awnings, allowing you to control your environment with the touch of a button. This tech integration not only adds convenience but also makes your deck more functional and enjoyable year-round.
8. Textured and Patterned Decking
While traditional decks used to feature plain, uniform wood planks, today's designs are much more dynamic. San Jose deck builders are experimenting with different textures and patterns to create a more visually interesting outdoor space. Chevron, herringbone, and even grid patterns are becoming popular for decking layouts, adding depth and dimension to the surface. Some builders are also using decking boards with varying textures to create a more tactile and luxurious feel underfoot.
9. Fire Features for Year-Round Enjoyment
Adding a fire pit or outdoor fireplace to your deck is a trend that is here to stay. San Jose’s cool evenings make it the perfect place to gather around a fire and enjoy the outdoors year-round. Deck builders in San Jose are incorporating fire features that seamlessly blend with the deck design, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Whether it's a built-in fire pit surrounded by comfortable seating or a striking outdoor fireplace that serves as a focal point, a fire feature can transform your deck into a year-round entertainment space.
10. Lush Greenery and Planters
Finally, incorporating nature into deck designs is a trend that many San Jose homeowners are embracing. Top deck builders are adding built-in planters, vertical gardens, and living walls to create a more organic, tranquil outdoor setting. Adding greenery to your deck not only beautifies the space but also helps create a more peaceful and relaxing environment. Whether it’s lush plants, flowering vines, or even a small herb garden, greenery can bring color, texture, and life to your deck, enhancing your connection with nature.
Conclusion
Deck design trends in San Jose are all about blending functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. Whether you’re looking to build a multi-level deck, add a custom outdoor kitchen, or incorporate the latest tech, San Jose’s top deck builders are ready to help you create the perfect outdoor living space. By staying on top of these trends, you can ensure your deck is not only a beautiful addition to your home but also a space that you can enjoy for years to come. Transforming your outdoor space through home renovation doesn't always require building new structures. Sometimes, a well-thought-out landscaping plan can have a considerable impact.
Adding plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers can breathe new life into your outdoor area and create a lush, peaceful environment. Consider layering your plants to create depth and visual interest.
For a more modern touch, consider incorporating vertical gardens or container plants. You can add raised garden beds if you enjoy growing vegetables and herbs.

4. Water Features
A fountain, pond, or waterfall can add tranquility to your outdoor space. The sound of running water creates a soothing atmosphere, ideal for relaxation or meditation.
A renovation contractor in Silverhill can incorporate water features into various parts of your outdoor space. How Commercial Kitchen Equipment Can Improve Your Menu Offering
Running a successful restaurant isn’t just about great recipes or top-notch service. At the heart of every thriving food business is one key element: commercial kitchen equipment. Whether you’re running a cozy café, a bustling restaurant, or even a catering business, upgrading your kitchen setup can work wonders for your menu. It’s like giving your chefs a magic wand—they can whip up exceptional dishes more efficiently, consistently, and creatively.
So, how exactly can commercial kitchen equipment transform your menu offerings? Let’s dive into the details and uncover why it’s the secret sauce to a stellar dining experience.
Streamlined Operations Lead to Consistency
Imagine this: You order your favorite dish at a restaurant, but it doesn’t taste as good as last time. Frustrating, right? Inconsistent food quality is one of the quickest ways to disappoint your customers. With high-quality commercial kitchen equipment, you ensure that each dish is prepared to the same standard, every single time.
For instance, precision ovens and grills allow chefs to maintain consistent temperatures and cooking times. No more overcooked steaks or underbaked pastries! Commercial-grade mixers, slicers, and fryers can handle large quantities without compromising the quality of food. The result? Your menu offerings shine with reliability—customers know they can count on you for their favorite dishes, prepared just the way they love.
Expand Your Menu Without Breaking a Sweat
Want to add exciting new dishes to your menu? With the right kitchen equipment, this becomes an exciting opportunity rather than a logistical nightmare.
Take pizza ovens, for example. By installing a top-tier commercial pizza oven, you can easily introduce artisanal pizzas without changing your kitchen workflow. Similarly, specialized steamers, sous-vide machines, or pasta boilers open up avenues to diversify your offerings—from perfectly tender sous-vide steaks to fresh, al dente pasta dishes.
When your equipment can handle the heavy lifting, your chefs can focus on creativity rather than stress over inefficiencies. New dishes mean new opportunities—you can appeal to a wider customer base, boost sales, and keep your menu fresh and exciting.
Improve Speed Without Sacrificing Quality
Here’s the deal: Customers hate waiting. In today’s fast-paced world, diners want their meals to arrive quickly without sacrificing quality. That’s where commercial kitchen equipment becomes a game-changer.
High-speed ovens, industrial fryers, and efficient food processors allow chefs to prepare meals faster than ever before. For example, a high-speed convection oven can reduce cooking times by up to 50% while still delivering perfectly baked dishes. Likewise, industrial fryers heat up quickly and maintain temperatures better than standard fryers, ensuring golden, crispy results in minutes.
Quicker service means happier customers and faster table turnovers—a win-win for your restaurant. Plus, you maintain the same high standards of taste and presentation, even during peak hours.
Enhance Food Safety and Hygiene Standards
No restaurant can afford to compromise on food safety. A single mishap can harm your reputation beyond repair. Fortunately, modern commercial kitchen equipment is designed to make food preparation safer and cleaner.
Refrigeration systems, for instance, maintain consistent cooling temperatures to keep ingredients fresh and free from contamination. High-end dishwashers sanitize utensils and cookware at high temperatures, eliminating harmful bacteria. Even commercial-grade grills and fryers are built with easy-to-clean surfaces, ensuring hygiene compliance without extra hassle.
By investing in reliable kitchen tools, you’re not just upgrading your cooking capabilities—you’re also prioritizing food safety. This builds trust with your customers and ensures your dishes are as safe as they are delicious.
Reduce Costs and Minimize Waste
Let’s face it: Running a restaurant is expensive. From ingredients to energy bills, costs can add up quickly. Here’s the good news—modern commercial kitchen equipment is built with efficiency in mind, saving you money in the long run.
Energy-efficient ovens, refrigerators, and fryers consume less power while delivering superior performance. This translates to lower energy bills month after month. Additionally, equipment like portion control scales and automated slicers ensures precise ingredient usage, reducing waste significantly.
Less waste means more profit. You’ll maximize your resources while minimizing overhead costs—a crucial factor for staying competitive in the food industry.
Elevate Coffee and Beverage Offerings
Don’t forget about drinks! Coffee and beverages can be huge revenue drivers for restaurants and cafes. Investing in high-quality coffee machines, such as La Marzocco coffee machines, can take your drink menu to a whole new level.
These machines aren’t just for brewing coffee—they’re for creating an experience. From perfectly foamed cappuccinos to rich, smooth espressos, a top-tier coffee machine helps you deliver drinks that rival the best specialty coffee shops. Happy coffee lovers often turn into loyal regulars, boosting both your sales and reputation.
Take Advantage of Seasonal Sales to Upgrade Your Kitchen
If you’re thinking about upgrading your equipment but worried about costs, there’s a solution. Take advantage of commercial kitchen equipment sale events. These sales offer significant discounts on high-quality kitchen tools, making it more affordable to revamp your kitchen and improve your menu offerings.
Seasonal sales are the perfect time to invest in those big-ticket items—pizza ovens, grills, refrigeration units, and more—without stretching your budget. It’s an investment that pays off quickly by enhancing efficiency, consistency, and menu versatility.
