Hot Apple Cider

As part of @cozy-autumn-prompts here’s a little cosy fluffy fic.

Cullen Rutherford x Annabel Trevelyan, early romance, short and sweet. 

I’ve not posted anything for a looong time so please be kind! Also on AO3 here

“It’ll be fun, you do remember that word, right, fun?” Annabel cocks her brow at Cullen but doesn’t wait for an answer, already swinging herself up into the saddle.

She’s not wrong, he thinks, any time alone with her was always enjoyable. It’s just that he has a stack of reports waiting in his office almost as tall as he is. Yet when he spies the tartan rug and tin canteen tied to her mare’s side, the paperwork is almost forgotten. Would it really hurt to spend an hour enjoying the autumnal colours with her?

“I had cook make some hot apple cider,” she carries on, tapping the bottle by her side.

How did she know that was his favourite tipple on cold winter nights? Cullen watches her carefully for a moment, beyond tempted by the lady and her offering.

“I can always make accompanying me an order if you prefer?” Annabel gives the hint of a knowing smile. “You can be my escort?”

Grabbing his horse's reins, Cullen mounts up, spinning his gelding away purely so he can smirk over his shoulder as he trots away. “Only if you can keep up, my lady!”

Annabel quickly kicks at her horse to catch up the lost ground and they ride slowly side by side out Skyhold’s gates. The clop hooves on cobblestone soon gives way to crisp rustles as they exit the path. They weave through ankle-deep leaves that make a blanket of intricate colours ranging from pale yellow, to russet brown, through to merlot red which all crinkle pleasantly under their mounts' meandering pace.

Of course, Annabel had been right, although Cullen won’t say that out loud. The bitterness of the wind that stirs the falling leaves is refreshing against the constant fever his lyrium withdrawal brought with it, and it clears lingering concerns from his mind. Even his headache has eased into the background. Had she known? Cullen wonders as he glances over to see her gazing up at the blue sky through bare branches. Had she known today had been a bad day? That he’d awoken with a terrible headache that refused to leave him be? That he’d had to leave his office door open to stay comfortable? That he’d spent the last hour clutching a quill far too tight with nothing to show for it? She seems to sense his gaze, and twists in the saddle to smile brightly at him as if the simple sight of him brought her joy. He can’t help but notice how he returns the expression.

Soon the trees thin, and the ground turns muddier, but the splatter of mud on his boots is worth it as he dismounts and takes in the view. A lake stretches out in front of them, he remembers finding it early on when scouting Skyhold’s surroundings but had thought little of it since. It’s a perfect reflection of the sky; its surface only rippling at rocks around its edges and at the flutter of falling leaves.

Closing his eyes, Cullen breathes deeply through his nostrils, enjoying the tingle and the purity of the crisp scent. He’d spent far too many years patrolling stuffy towers and living his life to a schedule not his own. This makes for a pleasant change.

The plop of a stone in the water opens his eyes, and he finds Annabel at the lake edge attempting to skip a rock across its surface and failing miserably.

“You need a smoother pebble,” he interjects, and she frowns at the one in her hand before rummaging around her feet once more.

“Like this?” Annabel holds one up, and with his nod of approval, tosses it straight out into the water with a sinking plonk. The expression of disapproval on her face makes him chuckle, and the look is quickly turned on him. “I suppose you can do better?”

Smirking, Cullen wanders to her side, sharp amber eyes picking out a suitable pebble from the dozens scattered around his feet. “We didn’t all spend our youth attending grand soirees, Lady Annabel,” he inspects his find, then looks to her, noting how a small leaf has somehow landed unnoticed in her hair. “Some of us had fun.” With that, he flicks his wrist and sends the stone skittering over the surface. It bounces with ease, the only evidence of its journey the pattern of ripples in its wake as it makes its way out over the water.

“So I see,” there is a lithe playfulness to Annabel’s tone as she snuggles up against his side. “Although I can think of something much more fun,” one tiptoe, she reaches up and pecks a kiss against his jaw. Thankfully, Cullen is beyond blushing every time she teased or played coy with him, but he still feels her closeness heat his veins.

“I bet you can,” he rumbles, leaning in for a deep, lingering, kiss. Her smile rests against his lips for a moment before they part, and for once his mind is as clear as the water before him.

A tug on his arm breaks his peaceful trance, and he finds himself being dragged over to the thick blanket she must’ve set up when he wasn’t looking. As he settles, she pours a steaming mug of cider and he's hit by the scent of sweet apples spiced with cinnamon. The hot scented steam fills his lungs and warms him right down to his frozen toes. The aroma conjures up images of the little farmstead kitchen where his mother had made great batches of it. For a moment he sees her, hair tied back, ladle in hand, stirring a great big pot while he’d struggled to peer eagerly inside. Cullen takes the mug, wraps both hands around it and studies the drift of steam for a long heartbeat. “How did you know?” He asks quietly.

Annabel frowns, blowing on her own drink. “Know what?”

“About the hot apple cider,” his gaze wanders to her, then back down to it and the comforting memories it stirs.

“I do listen when you talk,” Annabel shuffles a little closer until her hip bumps against his and she can lean her head on his shoulder. “You told me it was your favourite, one night after a few too many regular ciders. And it just so happens to be my favourite too.”

Cullen can’t recall the conversation, but she’s already distracted him by clinking her tin mug against his.

“To enjoying the changing seasons together,” she offers up her toast with a smile that spreads from her ruddy cheeks right into the glimmer of her eyes. He agrees and watches her take her first sip. One which is clearly far too hot, and he’s left chuckling once more at her disapproving frown as she sets it aside.

“Or maybe to just enjoying each other?” Annabel looks hopeful, her every emotion playing across her face as it always did, and Cullen finds the cider is forgotten.

“To both,” he counters, reaching up to pluck a near-perfect crimson leaf from her hair and present it to her as if it were the finest rose. "My lady."

Breaking me

After a huge fight between Jasper and Annabelle both needed distance who will break first.

Annabelles P.O.V.

I didn't even know how it started... It was peaceful, loving the moment that surrounded us turned sour.

We were sitting on the branches looking into the forest, His arms wrapped around me carefully as we chatted endlessly into the night.

"I have to tell you something" His voice carried worry. I pulled away gently to look at his face. I nodded for him to continue.

" We are leaving, my family and I. people at the hospital are starting to notice Carlisle not looking older." He looked down in shame and hopped off the branch with me following suit.

" Are you giving up on us, HOW CAN YOU WALK AWAY" I yelled looking at him through tears.

I winced at the memory that happen months I started to get dressed, I wasn't going to sit in bed anymore. Bella has been taking it worse with nightmares throughout the night.

I will admit I'm not handling it any better I've taken up some bad habit like smoking and drinking anything to forget him. Dawn was settling into the sky as I put on my jacket and headed straight to the woods.

Coming the tree that witnessed it all I began to climb to the branch hidden away from view. Pulling out a joint I inhaled smiling as the smoke clouded my mind. The pain seemed ease and time passed.

Crack

Jumping I dropped the joint while trying to hang on before I fell. I sat silently waiting the hear another sound. Suddenly everything went black, and a fire erupted in my shoulder.

Waking up was painful. Everything seemed so clear. The burning sensation in the back of my throat became painfully obvious. I was scared and didn't know what was happening.

"Newborns can barely control themselves around blood. the new thirst is nearly impossible to control, in the first year we are more powerful because of the human blood that still runs through body's still"

Sobbing I fell to my knees grabbing at my throat. I refused to hurt anyone; I couldn't go home it's too dangerous to be around my family. Getting up I brushed my knees off.

" Come on Annabelle you can do this, just find a deer or something" I mumbled to myself as I walked further into the woods.

1 year later

It's been a year since I left forks. I couldn't be around that place until I was sure I wouldn't hurt anyone. Charlie and Bella have called over the year, I could never bring myself to answer or even look at the voicemails. That was until now.

Picking up the phone I found Bellas's contact.

"Anna is that really you?" I could hear her voice start to waver like she's trying not to cry.

"Bella" I whispered out smiling sadly as venom pulled in my eyes.

"Where are you? Are you ok? Please come home" She cried out while pleading under her breath.

"I am. I'm finally coming home. I'm so sorry I'll explain everything to you-" I was cut off when I heard his voice in the background quietly begging Bella to hand over the phone " Bella who are you with" I could feel my chest tighten. As she says his name telling the story of them coming home, Jasper distraught form, they all have been looking for you. Alice couldn't even see you anymore after the attack.

" Bella give him the phone" I brokenly whispered

"Darlin" Jasper pled in the phone. his voice heavy with emotion. I broke down sobbing as he tried to help as best as he could. I sobbed out I was coming home and hung up.

The next day

After running throughout the night, I finally reached the boarder of the Cullen land. All of them already outside probably due to the smell of a new vampire.

" Just let me explain, you know I wouldn't lie to you. I know you'll understand if you let me stay the night" I voiced out not daring to take another step out of the dark. All their heads snapped to the direction of my voice, but they couldn't pinpoint my location due to my gift of masking myself.

Jasper stepped forward; his face was unreadable. He looked different from when you last saw him, his hair shorter, eyes pitch black. His outfit wrinkled. "Darlin" His voice carried out loudly with demand. Smiling softly, I stepped out

"Hey Jas" I whispered causing them all to look at me in shock.

"Your eyes" Carlisle said in shock they Jasper stepped forward towards me I took 2 steps back.

" Don't" I shook my head, but he didn't listen. His only thought has been your eyes. As he stood Infront of you the rest of the world faded out just like it was before he life.

"I'm so sorry" He sobbed as his grasps me into a tight hug. Nothing else mattered anymore. Not the past and not the future just the now. I hugged him back tightly as I sobbed alongside with him as the Cullen family comes over asking questions the only thing, I hear is His voice whispering sweet apologies and praise.

December 31st – Confrontation of Renesmee

Once it had been declared that Renesmee is not an immortal child, Irina was ripped apart and burned for providing a false allegation to the Kings.

Alice shows Aro a vision of what will happen if he decides to fight the Cullens and the Wolves “Now you know, that’s your future…unless you decide on anther course” “We cannot alter our course, the child still poses a great threat” Caius says to Aro “What if she can remain hidden from the human world, can we go in peace?” Edward asks “Of course, but that cannot be known” Caius replies “Actually it can” Edward cuts him off as Nahuel and Huilen break through the tree line and walk towards the Volturi. “I have been searching for witnesses of my own…” Caius cuts Alice off “We have enough witnesses” “Let him speak brother” Aro says, silencing Caius. “I am like the child, half human / half vampire. A vampire seduced my mother, who died giving birth to me. My aunt Huilen raised me as her own. I made her immortal” Nahuel advises everyone. They learn that Nahuel can survive on both blood and human food and after seven years he became full grown and hasn’t changed since.  

Aro appears convinced all is well, and there’s no danger in allowing Renesmee to live. However, Edward reads Caius’ mind and discovers he isn’t as convinced as Aro and without thinking he trades Renesmee’s life / freedom for that of Bella’s sister. “If we traded you Felix’s mate for Renesmee’s life would you allow us to leave and live in peace?” Edward asks looking at Caius. “What? I don’t have a mate” Felix says looking confused “You do, you just haven’t met her” Edward replies “And you have?” Felix retorts “Yes actually. Her name is Annabelle, she’s Bella’s sister” Alice answers this time and shock washes over everyone’s faces. “We would need to confirm that they are mates first” Caius replies, Edward nods “You can meet her today, she’s at home.” Caius looks at his brothers for a moment, before glancing over at Felix, who still looks shocked and nodded at Edward.

“Does your sister know about vampires?” Aro asks curiously “She found out recently, but it couldn’t be helped” Bella replied, Caius glared at them “You like breaking that basic law of ours, don’t you Edward?” “Actually, I let it slip” Alice interjected, smiling at Aro “That’s quite alright my dear, no harm done really. She was due to find out anyway, given that she is Felix’s mate” Aro replied with a smile, Caius rolled his eyes.

Aro sent the majority of the guards back to the plane, keeping Demetri, Felix and the twins with him, Caius and Marcus. “How do you feel about meeting your mate after centuries of being alone?” Demetri asked low “I should be happy, I know…but this doesn’t seem right D. This isn’t how I thought I’d meet her.” Demetri nodded and sympathised with his friend because he too didn’t agree that this was the ideal way to meet one’s mate.

“You know she is not going to be happy with either of you for doing this” Alice says looking at Edward and Bella. “My daughter’s life was on the line. What was I meant to do?” Edward replied “Oh I don’t know, maybe not trade in Annabelle’s life” Jasper pointed out “She’s innocent in all this and you’ve just handed her over to them like it’s nothing” Rosalie added, sounding a little upset. “They’re mates! They were bound to meet sometime” Edward shouts “This isn’t the best way though is it son?” Carlisle asks “And Bella, you’re awfully quiet, what do you think of Edward’s deal?” Tanya called out “It had to be done” Bella replied. “Let’s hope your sister is more loyal than you are” Tanya responded.

Carlisle motioned for Felix to approach him, Aro nodded and walked alongside him towards Carlisle and Esme “Everything ok Carlisle?” Aro asked “Yes, I just wanted to give Felix some advice” Esme replied low, Felix nodded “Be patient with her, she hasn’t known about our world for long and is likely to be upset, angry even at this situation” She added “I understand” Felix replied with a nod.

Bella and Edward go inside the Swan house to speak with Annabelle and tell her what they did and all hell breaks loose. The three Kings and the four elite guards stood in the back garden of the Swan house listening to the conversation between Bella, Edward and Annabelle, Caius finding the girl intriguing…for a human.

“You traded my life for hers? How dare you? You had no right!” Annabelle screams at Edward “They would have killed her…” Bella tries to explain “THAT’S NOT MY PROBLEM!” Annabelle interrupts loudly “You don’t understand...” Bella tries again “NO! YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. I’M NOT GOING!” Annabelle screams “YOU DON’T HAVE A CHOICE!” Edward shouts back “ONLY BECAUSE YOU TOOK THAT AWAY FROM ME! YOU HAD NO RIGHT!” Annabelle continues to scream at Edward “I have a life; I have things I want to do with my life and being mated to a vampire is not part of my life plan. So, the deal is off!” Annabelle goes to walk away but Bella grabs her “OW!” Annabelle screams “He’s outside waiting for you. You leave tonight” Bella said, nodding towards the back yard and keeping hold of her sister’s arm “You need to go pack” Bella adds. Annabelle pulls her arm free of Bella’s hold and walks to the living room “I don’t care what deal that ginger prick and my sister made, but I am not coming with you. They had no right to trade my life for their daughter’s” Annabelle shouts, knowing they can hear her.

“I will not make her come with us by force. It isn’t fair to her or me” Felix says looking at the Kings “The mate bond doesn’t work that way my dear boy. You know that” Marcus says softly “I haven’t actually seen her; we’ve not actually met one another so there is no bond in play” Felix replies, Marcus turns to look at him “So you’re telling me you don’t feel a pull towards her...seeing as you’re in such close proximity to one another?”  “Not really…but that might be due to her…reaction to the news” Felix replied, sounding unsure of himself, Marcus shook his head “We’ll see.”

“If you don’t go with him now, you’ll end like how I was when Edward left me” Bella said “No I won’t. I haven’t actually met him. I can’t miss someone I don’t know, genius” Annabelle retorts “She’s a feisty little human. I like her already” Demetri says sounding both amused and impressed not caring that Bella and Edward could hear him.

“You know what once I’m changed, I’m going to come back here and RIP YOU ALL APART!” Bella’s mouth falls open in shock “Caius won’t be happy with you” Edward says “Ha – I’ll just tell him it’s a newborn thing and he’ll just be happy I didn’t slaughter an entire village of humans and expose us. Let’s face it, he doesn’t like you two much anyway, so I’ll be doing him a favour really” Annabelle adds smiling.

“I like the girl. I’m going to go claim her” Caius says entering the house, missing the confused look on Felix’s face. “Don’t worry Felix, he didn’t mean it how it sounded” Marcus assured him. Caius enters the house and grabs Annabelle around the waist before an incident occurs as she was standing face to face with Bella. “You’re coming home with us” Caius said in her ear and she struggled in his arm “Put me down now” Annabelle told him “If you come quietly now, I’ll have the elite guards bring you back here as a newborn to follow up on the promise of ripping these two traitor’s heads off” She stopped moving and looked over her shoulder at him “You promise?” “Yes. I promise. I may even come to watch” Caius replied grinning “Fine. I’ll come quietly…but if you break your promise, it’ll be your head I rip off. Understand?” She glared at him “I understand and I will not break my promise, as you said I don’t like them anyway. You killing them means one less problem for me” He smiled at her.

“Wow. She threatened Caius and got away with it. Now I’m impressed” Jane smiled looking up at Felix, his face paled “She’s going to be a handful” He muttered “I know, I can’t wait” Demetri smiled wide, excitement shining in his red eyes and he patted his friend on the back. “It’s going to be an interesting year” Aro said just as Caius came out of the house carrying Annabelle. “Annabelle these are my brothers Aro and Marcus, we rule the vampire world together” “It’s nice to meet you both. My apologies for the…er…scene in there but it was abit of a shock to learn that my life had been ‘traded’ for their daughter’s” “That’s quite all right, my dear. We actually found it rather…refreshing” Aro replied smiling.

Once on the Volturi’s private plane Caius introduces Annabelle to Felix, Demetri, Jane and Alec. “Annabelle, these four are our Elite Guards, Demetri, our resident Tracker, Felix who’s our Executioner” Annabelle gulped and took a small step back, something that Felix noticed and he frowned slightly. “These two are Jane and Alec. They’re twins and are both gifted like Demetri” Caius added. “It’s nice to meet you all” Annabelle smiled at them “Likewise” Demetri replied “Are you curious who your mate is?” Caius asked “Yeah I guess, I hadn’t really thought about it” Annabelle replied “Ok then Annabelle, you are mated to Felix” Annabelle looked between Felix and Caius “That Felix?” “Yes, we only have one Felix…that I am aware of” Caius mused “You’re sassing me? Really?” She asked staring at Caius “When you ask an obvious question, you’re going to get a sassy remark” He replied and started to walk towards his seat “Is he like Edward?” Caius raised an eyebrow at her, the four elite guards turned to look at them “Is he controlling and possessive? Because if he is, this isn’t going to work. I am not Bella. I won’t be told what I can do, where I can go and who I can talk to” She replied “No, he is not like Edward. Although, all vampires are protective of their mates, seeing as we only get one and that can sometimes come across as possessive” Caius replied “Good. That’s something at least” Annabelle said low.

Annabelle sat down beside Felix “So…mate, how soon can I become immortal and go back kill my sister and her husband?” Demetri choked back a laugh as Felix took a deep unneeded breath “As soon as you feel ready to be changed” Felix replied “Great. Bite me” Annabelle said as she pulled her hair to one side and tilted her neck to give him access. Felix looked at Annabelle and then to Demetri who was sitting on his other side “Is she serious D?” “It would seem so Fe” He replied “Come on Felix. Bite me” “Annabelle…I…” “Demetri, will you bite me please?” She cut Felix off, Demetri smiled “Be my pleasure sweetheart” He stood up and watched as Annabelle turned to face him, he leant down and inhaled her scent “You smell nice” He whispered against the shell of her ear “Thank you…I think” Demetri carefully tilted her head a little more as his mouth filled with venom and just as he was about to bite her, he felt a strong hand on his arm “If you bite her D, I’ll have your head” Felix growled and Demetri smiled at him and sat back in his seat “See Felix you do want to bite me” Annabelle smiled and Felix sighed “I will turn you myself, but please wait till we get home. I’d like to spend the ten-hour flight getting to know you, not watch you writhe in pain” He said softly “Fine I’ll wait. But if you wuss out on me, I will let Demetri turn me” Annabelle told him before smiling at Demetri “I’ll be ready if / when you need me sweetheart” Demetri smiled back at her and Felix growled low.

They land in Volterra and once back at the castle they begin to make preparations for Annabelle’s transformation. Felix asks Alec and Demetri to be in the room with him when he turns his mate. “Demetri, Alec please be the room with me when I change Annabelle, I may need you both to stop me from killing her, if I don’t stop on my own. After all I have never turned anyone before” “Of course Felix, I will strip your senses away to allow Demetri to pull you away from her without ripping her throat out” Alec replied and Demetri nodded “Of course I’ll be there to help Fe.”

Annabelle woke up three days later and her eyes instantly found Felix’s and she ran straight into his arms “Thank you Felix” “You’re welcome mi amore” Felix replies as he gently cups her face in his large hands and presses his lips to her forehead.

Jane spoke to Annabelle about changing her plan for revenge on her sister and Edward. “Annabelle, I have an idea regarding your plan for revenge” “Ok Jane, I’m listening” She replied turning to face her. “Revenge is a dish best served cold and I think we should have fun with them first…” “What were you thinking sister?” Alec cut her off “I think we should play around with Alice’s visions a little, make the decision to go and see Bella and Edward, then decide not to go or just not turn up at all. Leave it a little while and make the decision to go to them again…” “Play mind games with them?” Annabelle interrupted “Exactly, that will irritate them, maybe even drive them mad” Jane replied smiling, a wicked glint in her eyes “I like that plan because when we do finally go and exact revenge, they will not see it coming” Annabelle responded with a wicked smile “We will all be by your side when the time comes mi amore” Felix added and wrapped his arm around her.

The next few decades were amusing to the Volturi but frustrating to the Cullens. Demetri tracked the Cullens as they moved around every so many years and took great pleasure in sending them a ‘Welcome to your new home’ card.

Finally, when Annabelle did decide to pay her sister a visit, Caius accompanied her and the four elite guards but instead of beheading Bella and Edward as originally planned all those years ago, they gave them a ‘new home’ present consisting of recently dead small woodland creatures “For you” Caius and Annabelle said together, both sporting a wicked grin on their lips and watched as shock washed over the faces of the Cullens. “We’ve bought you a welcome to your new home meal” Caius added smiling. “Revenge is sweet, sister” Annabelle told Bella with a smile before leaving the house to return to Volterra with her family.

A Hoarse Whisper “Kiss Me”

Was there anything worse than going to Oreslean noble parties?

If there was, Cullen can't fathom it, he'd rather be down in Skyholds drafty dungeons than stood on this stifling ballroom. 

He patrols the perimeter, finding it best to keep moving to avoid drawing an unwelcome crowd. Thanks to his years as a templar, he knows how to stride with purpose and authority, and tonight it's proven invaluable.

Annabel has done a disappearing act. Again. Maker preserve him, please let her not be climbing up walls in her ball gown again…

"Commander, no beautiful woman on your arm this evening?" The golden mask hides the ladies features as she steps out in front of him. She flutters an ornate lace fan, and he tugs at where his collar chaffes in the heat. 

"Er.. Well, I…"

"The Inquisitor is a very busy woman, Lady Elizabeth," Cassandra's flat tone interrupts with practiced grace. "Neither her nor the Commander are here to parade for the benefit of others curiosities."

On que, he feels fingers twine through his, and a cheery voice fills the air along with a tell tale rose petal scent. 

"Lady Elizabeth," Annabel's greeting is bright and bubbly. "I'm awfully sorry, but I'm going to have to steal our Commander here for a moment. Do have a lovely evening." She's already whisking them away before she's even finished speaking and he's beyond grateful.

"And where have you been?"

"Planning our escape," the squeeze she gives his hand is a comfort to his raw edges, but it's not enough to remove his tension completely.. 

"Glad to hear it," he doesn't think he can manage one more false smile, although he finds a natural one rests warmly on his lips for her. "Seriously though?"

"I just told you," Annabel looks up to him with a sparkle in her eyes that is far too enthralling. And naughty. Maker preserve him… 

He doesn't get a chance to probe any further as she tugs him around a corner to a secluded spot in the garden where a small water fountain trickles. Before he can even ask what in Thedas they are doing here, she's already stepped in, the edges of her gown turning a deeper shade of red as the water laps at her ankles. 

"Annabel!" Cullen curbs his voice quickly and glances over his shoulder to check the coast is still clear. "Annabel, I don't think the Duchess-"

Cold water hits him, the shock strong enough to make him gasp and splutter. He doesn't know if he should curse her or thank her. The water is a blessing against the unbearable heat, but now his face, and jacket are soaked. How was he going to explain that to a stuffy room of nobles?

It doesn't matter though, not when she chuckles. He could never stay mad at her, not when she was the embodiment of joy itself. Something his life had seen far too little of.

"The Duchess wouldn't know how to throw a good party if it slapped her in the face," Annabel hikes up her skirt a little, although it's far too late to help save it. "Holding an indoor event, in this heat?" She huffs to herself, the way she did without realising when insulting other nobles. With an endearing smile she holds out her hand and swirls her foot in the water. "Join me?"

Now it's Cullen's turn to huff, head shaking before he even knows it. "I think I'm wet enough already, don't you?" He folds his arms. "Besides, just how did you plan to explain your new attire to Josephine?"

"Ah…" Annabel's whole body pauses with her words as her eyes fall down her dress. "I fell?" She raises a hopeful eyebrow that makes him chuckle and offer out his hand

"Come on, before anyone-"

"Hey! No playing in the fountain!"

Too late. Two guards are already jogging over with sour looks plastered on their sweaty faces. He shifts to try to calm them, but his arm is roughly tugged from behind.

"Quick! Run!" She's pulling on his sleeve, eyes alight and beckoning him to follow. He's torn for a moment, but ultimately, he can't resist her sirens call.

"Hey! Come back here!"

All those years of doing what he was told, of following every rule to perfection, and now here he is, running from two portly guards like a school boy caught stealing candy. He might never admit it, but the thrill is intoxicating, she is intoxicating. 

He lets her drag him wherever she leads, and almost trips when she jerks him abruptly into a tiny alcove. The sound of pounding boots are all too close behind them.

"Now what?" He hisses, peering over his shoulder once again, thankfully finding no sight of their pursuers.

"Kiss me," it's a horse whisper and captures his full attention. Turning to her, he finds her eyes smouldering up at him. His brows furrow, has she gone mad?

"Kiss me," this time it isn't a request. Her hands are up around his neck and dragging his lips into hers. 

Red wine tingles over his tongue and her enchantment over him erupts into a heated kiss that steals his breath and his senses. She hums into his mouth and his body instinctively presses over hers, melting them into the shadows.

 A distant corner of his mind registers the heavy foot falls growing louder, then receding into the night. It seems her plan to hide from the guards has worked…  although neither of them let that stop them… in fact, it only drives his kiss deeper.
