Astarion x Lorelei (Fem!Tav OC)

Lorelei's Journal - Featuring a half-elf, rogue Tav named Lorelei and journals the events of the game. This is my attempt at creating a canon timeline for my first playthrough.

A/N: Decided to stick these two prompts together!

If a heart had existed within your ribcage, you knew it would be pounding. Distant reminders of the feeling had your fists clenching and your teeth gritting. Ghosts of anxiety attacks flit around your head, clawing to be set free in the bitter form of pins and needles and laboured breathing and a sick churning in the stomach.

You took a deep, unneeded breath as you walked briskly down the corridor. Nobody was following you just yet. Your footsteps were the only ones rushing along the polished floor towards your father's room.

Your arm reached out to grasp the door handle, but it swing open before you could touch it, your terrified eyes meeting the concern of Carlisle Cullen’s. With a quick, meaningful glance behind and around you, he gently grasped your arm and pulled you in, shutting the door behind them.

Your crashed into him immediately. You buried your face in his chest and wrapped your arms around him tight. Those ghosts had not left yet, they were still begging to be released. You clenched your fists around his tunic and squeezed your eyes shut.

Carlisle, with little difficulty, removed your arms from him and grasped you by the shoulders. He leant to your level and tilted his head to catch your gaze.

“Y/N, sweet girl,” he whispered, “calm yourself. Calm down.”

You desperately shook your head. “I wasn’t thinking, Papa. I let him go because I liked him. I didn’t want Aro to kill him. I wasn’t thinking! Was I wrong? Will Aro kill me now?”

Carlisle stood to his feet and drew you quickly into his arms. A hand went to the back of your head, and he pressed his lips to your crown, hushing you gently. He'd felt your panic before he'd heard your rushed steps down the corridor, and had deciphered the situation the moment he'd seen you.

You were your father's daughter, a compassionate creature to the core. Aro had picked from the cream of the crop just the other week, a young boy of about fifteen, and had paraded him around Volterra. Playing with his food. You had befriended him somewhat, if exchanging smiles and a few words here and then counted as befriending. A life in the Volturi didn't offer much friendship, so it had been somewhat easy.

You’d known Aro would get bored soon and take his life, and Carlisle had known that you were far too like him to allow that to happen.

You had let the boy escape. And Carlisle knew he had been waiting for it, for some excuse to leave. He wasn't going to stick around to see how Aro would react to his bolted meal.

"No," Carlisle said. He kissed the top of your head and pushed you gently away, spinning on his heel. "No, we are leaving. Pack your things."

You moved quickly and quietly, packing the belongings you had moved with you from state to state, country to country. Carlisle kept his ears alert, every bone in his body at the ready.

"I'm sorry," you said eventually.

"You have nothing to be sorry for," Carlisle said, taking your hand. "Nothing."

He was thanking the heavens.

We write our thoughts on canon on tumblr, but in fanfiction we are free to make our own rules and have fun.

What we extrapolate from canon impacts the canon of our fics Fun fact, therealvinelle only exists because people kept asking me questions about my choices in Nebuchadnezzar's Dream, and I thought replying to the same questions in the comment section was silly. So I made a blog, which became a beast unto its own. In other words, fic is impacted by how I view canon, and when people ask me my opinion on canon I tell them my view on canon. Example: Carlisle and Aro are not intended by Meyer to have been anything more than friends, but we think it's there and write metas with that starting point, and have it explicitly canon in our fics.

We keep our fics consistent with one another, sometimes using a minor tidbit from canon to justifty it and sometimes making it up Muffin and I are very stringent about this sort of thing. Our view on the characters is fixed: if something changed from one AU to another, the question is "Why?". If it just changed for no reason and the people remain the same, they're no longer real people and nothing really matters. Example: the Volturi guards all having consistent personalities, life stories staying the same, nevermind that we made up Demetri's personality or Aro's ridiculous collection of Carlisle art.

We write metas explaining our fics on our tumblrs See my fic meta tag. Anon asks "Why did character do thing?" and we go "well, character is a person who does things like that thing, remember in canon when they did that thing? So we had them do this thing in our fic." Nevermind that character didn't actually do thing in canon, because this was all in a fic. Example: see the fic meta tag on my blog or Muffin's masterpost.

Now to answer your question: to my recollection Jasper/Peter and Charlotte is first mentioned in For the Love of a Woman, where Bella learns that not a single one of the Cullen men are straight and she despairs (as does Emmett, who wonders what this means for him).

It was justified as a "Jasper was in a state of ennui, they were all beautiful, they went for it" type of thing, and perhaps more to the point it tells you, the reader (and the scandalized Cullens, per fics like Bleach on the Brain) something about vampire sexual norms being different than 21st century western humans and those humans already have plenty of casual, recreational sex.

So, canon doesn't indicate it, but we had Jasper/Peter and Charlotte be a thing that happened in our fics and the argument for it can be made (I do believe sexual norms among vampires, being excempt from diseases, pregnancies, children, and the type of obligation and routine human lives have, would be... recreational).

(As it is I recall this coming up on the blog before, but I think whichever of us got the question responded with essentially the above - "We don't know, but possible".)

Dec. 10 - Pick one of the witnesses in Breaking Dawn. What was it like for them to stay at the Cullens' home for those two weeks? Who did they spend time with?

There was no question about it.

Carlisle’s family was weird.

He’d met them before, but in passing. Now, surrounded, Garrett understood that the meetings had been in the woods, on street corners, at night, not because that was normal for Carlisle’s coven, but for his benefit. He had heard Carlisle say the words “home” and call the rangy redhead his son, but it just hadn’t registered. He thought it was just language, that his old friend was making himself feel better about the state of affairs he lived in. But it wasn’t.

They had a goddamn Christmas tree. When it had been suggested that he go to the Cullen home, Garrett had assumed he’d find a coven playacting. Staying out of the way of the Volturi. Hiding from humankind. And surely, surely there couldn’t be seven of them as perfect in their records as Carlisle.

But, no, here they were. Half a dozen bedrooms, closets with clothes that weren’t purloined from victims. Carlisle, nerd that he was, had a whole fucking library on the second floor, with books he’d been toting for two centuries. Five bathrooms—for what? And a kitchen. Well, that was, oddly, going to use.

Garrett could hear her, humming to herself as she buzzed around, again making some sort of something for the werewolves who were sleeping on the doorstep, and realized he recognized the tune. Penny Lane.

Yep, he needed air.

There was a figure already on the porch when he exited, and even if the scent hadn’t registered before his eyes did, he’d have recognized the silhouette anywhere. The shoulders were slumped in a way that reminded Garrett of two hundred twenty years ago. The body of a man trying to convince himself he was happy, when he wasn’t.

“This is some endeavor, English,” he said, and the head whipped around. Garrett laughed. “Did I startle you?” Absurd.

A long sigh. “Oh, perhaps I was somewhat aware.” The face broke into a tired smile. “I’m just out here cogitating.”

Garrett cocked his head. “You do you know you sound like the most horrible snob when you use words like that.”

This, thankfully, elicited a smile. “Noted. What brings you outdoors?”

“Your woman was singing the Beatles; I had to escape.”

A questioning frown.

“I didn’t care for the first British invasion. I like the second even less.”

His friend’s bark of a laugh was familiar. Garrett grinned in return, and then joined Carlisle at his side, leaning against the thick railing.

“I will say, however, that her taste in music aside, Esme is quite the—”

“Garrett.”

“—lovely woman is what I was going to say,” he finished sweetly, flashing Carlisle a wide smile. His friend shook his head, rolling his eyes, but then they met gazes and Carlisle smirked. Both of them began laughing.

“I am a lucky man; I won’t deny it.”

“Hell yes you are, you bastard.” He punched Carlisle in the shoulder, and Carlisle looked down shyly, a wry smile playing on his face. “And here I thought you were going to go all eternity without ever doing the deed.”

Another laugh. “Truthfully? So did I.”

The moonlight glinted off Carlisle’s hair as they both fell into companionable silence again. They looked enough alike to pass as brothers; it had been something Garrett had liked all those centuries ago. Even though Carlisle was his elder by a century and then some, he had always struck Garrett as naïve. His hope, his steadfast confidence that if he just did things his way, it would all turn out right and well. It was as admirable as it was ridiculous.

And yet it was working.

Garrett didn’t have to work hard to make out the individual conversations going on in the expansive living room as he and Carlisle stared together out into the forest. The sisters—also gorgeous, talking with the Spanish woman. Her mate, locked in a quiet talk with Carlisle’s son. The weird kid, with her even weirder name, reading to her mother while Carlisle’s blonde daughter interjected every now and again. The lawn behind the house twinkled in color from the tree and the lights that went up the banister in the big room; the shadows cast by the roaring fire danced playfully across the porch.

“You succeeded,” he said finally.

“Mmm?”

He gestured widely at the house behind them. “You succeeded. At this. I thought you were bereft of your senses, with that diet and the doctor thing and everything but…you did it.” He turned, leaning against the rail. “Family life suits you. I don’t know why I am surprised.”

Carlisle made a noise somewhere between a snort and a laugh. “It’s not easy. At times, I envy your freedom.” He turned back to Garrett. “I wasn’t out here merely cogi—thinking. I was worrying, while Edward isn’t paying attention. I’m worried about Alice and Jasper, and I’m worried about Renesmee, and I’m worried what that will do to Bella, and what any of this will do to Edward. And then all of you…”

Garrett clapped a hand on Carlisle’s shoulder. “We chose to come. You can’t take that on.”

The brow furrowed again. “I feel responsible.”

“That’s your problem, not anyone else’s. No one is going to hold you responsible for”—he gestured widely in the direction of the field where the clairvoyant had indicated they would need to be—“whatever goes on out there. You’re responsible for this. This gathering. These friends. This…family. This is what you worry about. This is what you can control.”

They both glanced back in the doors. Someone had turned on Christmas music. The Spanish woman was slow dancing with her mate. One of the sisters—the prettier one—had accepted the offer of a a Santa hat. Muffled laughter. The sound of crackling, and the earthen scent of a fresh log beginning to burn.

“And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit,” Carlisle muttered.

“Huh?”

This elicited another chuckle. “The twelfth chapter of Luke, you heathen.” He grinned. “But it’s a welcome reminder. Thank you.”

The Bible. Of course. That hadn’t changed, either. Garrett stared. Carlisle’s expression seemed to have softened; the strange, amber eyes glowed differently. The two of them stared out into the blackness of the night, the moon glinting off the river so close to the house. They listened to this; the way the water pounded against what must have been much larger rocks further north, where the elevation was even higher, before coming whooshing through the woods behind the stately home.

It was a long while before Garrett got the eerie feeling of being watched. He turned back toward the hulking French doors. Esme standing there, her head cocked, her arms crossed over her chest.

“There’s a beautiful woman looking for you, English,” Garrett said, nudging Carlisle in the ribs.

Carlisle turned. “So there is.” He beckoned, and the door opened a crack as Esme leaned out.

“Your granddaughter wants to say goodnight,” she called. “They’re going back over to the cottage in a few minutes.”

Your granddaughter, Garrett mouthed. The words still felt strange on his lips.

Carlisle didn’t miss this. “It is amazing, isn’t it?”

Garrett stared back at the door. “Like I said. It suits you.” He nodded in the direction of Carlisle’s wife. “Go. Stop worrying. At least for the night.”

In the same instant that Carlisle nodded, he was at his wife’s side. He put his arm around her waist, and she tipped her chin up so that their lips met. It looked…familiar. Garrett watched the way their gazes followed each other’s, the way a hand around the waist slipped slowly over hips to become a hand in another hand. The way she smiled up at him. The blur of knee-high blue that was the little girl streaking across the living room for his knees. The way he lifted her into the air and how she giggled and squeaked as he tossed her before settling her, one-armed, onto his hip. That even amidst the worry, his face lit up as he pressed his nose to hers and she put her palm to his cheek.

He had thought Carlisle boring. Naïve. Even deluded. I envy your freedom, he heard his friend’s voice echo in his head.

But as he listened to the laughter on the other side of the door, and watched the way the colored lights played off the planes of his friend’s face, Garrett wondered if freedom was really all Carlisle imagined it was cracked up to be.

Note: A more modern translation of Luke 12:25 reads “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” (NRSV). But I feel confident that if Carlisle is going to quote the Bible, it’s the 1611 KJV that he has in mind.

Bonus Chapter TEASER

The Undercroft was quiet. Though the sound of water—coursing beneath the cavern and spilling from its maw—echoed against the walls, the usual hustle and bustle was nonexistent.

It was nighttime, far beyond the working hours of most Undercroft staff. The only light was that of torches, for the shine of the moons and stars could not quite penetrate within. Yet, to Trevelyan, this was perfect.

There’d been too much distraction in the afternoon for her to truly concentrate. Not that she didn’t enjoy the ambience of the Undercroft, of course—but, on this day, she wanted for an accompaniment far less bothersome. Silence was exactly that.

Her papers rustled, as she turned to the next section of notes. The sound was enough to mask the creak of the door, so quiet was it. The footsteps that followed were dulled by the waterfall, and it was not until the torches flickered, casting the shadow of a figure upon the walls, that Trevelyan even realised she was not alone.

Her head lifted. A hand stroked across her back, and settled upon her waist.

“Arcanist,” said Cullen, kissing her temple.

Trevelyan smiled. She knew quite well why he was here. “Sorry,” she said. “I needed peace, to work. I didn’t think about stargazing.”

He pulled up a stool, and sat beside her. “It’s all right. I passed one of the mages on my way. She said you were still here.” She offered him a hand, which he took and toyed with. “I can leave you alone, if need be. I… just wanted to see you, first.”

Trevelyan curled her fingers around his. Smiling, she told him, “You can stay.”

“Are you certain?”

“So long as you’re quiet.”

He nodded, and kept his mouth shut.

“Not that quiet.”

He chuckled. “And what volume would you prefer?”

“Talk to me. Just don’t be distracting.”

“Hm. I seem to recall you scolding me the other day because my eyes were distracting you.”

Trevelyan sighed, leafing through her notes. “Well, they were. They were… distractingly pretty.”

“Mm?”

She glanced at him, and found those eyes gazing back, unrelenting. Pretty, pretty, honey brown eyes. Soft and gentle and reflecting the torchlight. She scoffed, and tore hers away.

“This is exactly the issue.”

He smiled, quite clearly pleased with himself. “Then I shall endeavour to have less distracting eyes,” he said, turning them instead to her scattered notes. “Tell me what you’re working on.”

Trevelyan shuffled the papers about. “Wards. The trials of the growth-stunting spell have been promising; the red lyrium sample is taking longer to break its bounds. They could buy us time to search for a cure—if we can deploy them. I was thinking about the Emprise, but I need to strengthen them first. They don’t last… the red lyrium drains them as it does anything else.”

Cullen peered over her schematics, face changing—slowly—from that of curiosity, to one of contemplation. He withdrew. From her, from that room, from his body, even. A chill—wind, from the mountains, it must have been—ran across Trevelyan’s back.

“Is something the matter?”
