I just realized i never actually answered the question lmao
its pizza
homemade pizza it's their favorite
the apple didn't fall far from the tree
Hi. So, I saw Mikey feed Odyn a bottle of (presumably) milk, but what other things do the turtle tots like to eat?
It was indeed milk!
We don't truly know how exactly ronin Mikey grew up but I'm assuming that in like most iterations of the turtles, food and a place to stay were hard to come by when growing up, specially when Mikey and his brothers were babies. Because of this, Mikey knows what is like growing hungry and not letting any food they had the luck of having go to waste.
In the comic Mikey is shown growing his own crops and harvesting them So in the au Mikey grows his own vegetables and fruits making it easier for him to prepare food for the babies. He tries his best to make a large variety of dishes for them because he wants them to try as much they want and never go hungry. Since Mikey is a turtle mutant himself he tries to makes dishes that would appeal to their turtle cravings too, like algae! In addition to this, in the au Mikey sells his harvest to nearby towns to manage with money or stuff he and the babies need for the house! (like ingredients to make homemade pizza :] )The people from the towns he usually visits don't really mind him or the babies because they are aware they are Hamato clan members and the people from the towns actually like having the little turtle family around! (Since Mikey can't really leave the babies on their own yet (not like he wants to either), the towns knows of their existance and they love them)
#I RAMBLED AND NO ONE TOLD ME I DIDNT EVEN ANSWER THE QUESTION#yi loves sweet things#i feel like uno would like dark chocolate#moja likes salty dishes#odyn surprisingly loves salads#these babies are very well versed in food and mikey made sure of it lmao#culinary connoisseurs the four of them#they would make any chef so fucking jealous#moja may like mostly salty stuff but she loves baked goods too :']#peepaw and babies au#also they all love pineapple on pizza you can fight me on this all you want#i will not relent

A Slice of History: The Evolution of Cake Shops
The tradition of cake-making dates back centuries, with ancient civilizations indulging in various forms of sweet baked goods. However, it was not until the 17th century that the modern concept of cake shops began to emerge. Initially, these establishments were small, family-owned businesses that catered primarily to the elite, offering elaborate cakes for special occasions such as weddings and birthdays.
As time passed, cake shops evolved to meet the changing tastes and preferences of consumers. With the advent of industrialization and mass production techniques, cakes became more accessible to the general public, and cake shops flourished in urban centers around the world. Today, these establishments range from quaint neighborhood bakeries to upscale patisseries, each showcasing a rich tapestry of flavors and designs that reflect both tradition and innovation.
The Art of Cake Making: A Labor of Love
At the heart of every cake shop lies a team of talented bakers and pastry chefs who are dedicated to their craft. From mixing and baking to decorating and finishing, every step of the cake-making process is meticulously executed with precision and passion. Whether it's handcrafted sugar flowers or intricate piping techniques, these artisans take pride in creating edible works of art that not only look stunning but also taste divine.
Moreover, the quality of ingredients plays a crucial role in determining the flavor and texture of the final product. From locally sourced organic flour to fresh seasonal fruits, cake shops prioritize the use of high-quality, wholesome ingredients to ensure that each bite is a symphony of flavors that delights the senses. Additionally, many cake shops offer custom-made cakes and personalized designs, allowing customers to create bespoke creations that reflect their individual tastes and preferences.
A Feast for the Senses: Exploring Cake Shop Delights
Step inside any reputable cake shop, and you'll be greeted by a tantalizing display of confectionery delights that beckon to be savored. From classic layer cakes and fluffy cupcakes to indulgent cheesecakes and delicate pastries, the options are endless. Each offering is a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship of the bakers, who continuously push the boundaries of flavor and design to create memorable culinary experiences.
Moreover, cake shops are not just about cakes; they also offer a variety of other sweet treats and baked goods to satisfy every craving. From cookies and brownies to macarons and petit fours, these establishments cater to a diverse clientele with a penchant for all things sweet. Additionally, many cake shops also offer a selection of savory items such as quiches and sandwiches, making them the perfect destination for a leisurely brunch or afternoon tea.
The Sweetest Memories: Celebrating Life's Special Moments

4 Factors to Consider When Choosing a Christmas Wine Gift
Choosing the perfect Christmas wine gift involves more than just picking a bottle at random. It's an art, and it requires thoughtful consideration of several key factors to ensure your gift is truly appreciated. Whether you're selecting a wine for a festive Christmas party or a more intimate gathering, these four factors should be on your radar:
First and foremost, it's crucial to decipher the recipient's taste preferences. Do they have a penchant for red, white, or sparkling wines? Are they connoisseurs of bold, full-bodied varieties, or do they lean towards the lighter, fruitier options? Understanding their taste profile is paramount to choosing a wine that resonates with them. Don't hesitate to consult their family or friends for guidance when in doubt.
Consider the occasion at hand. Is it a grand Christmas bash with a sizable guest list or an intimate gathering of close friends and family? The nature of the event impacts your wine selection. For larger parties, opt for versatile wines that can please a diverse range of palates. Conversely, smaller gatherings offer the opportunity to pick a more specific wine that caters to the recipient's unique tastes.
Think about the culinary delights that will accompany the wine. Will it be savored with a sumptuous Christmas dinner or another holiday feast? If so, choosing a wine that complements the meal's flavors is vital. For hearty meat dishes, consider full-bodied red wines, while lighter fare like seafood pairs beautifully with white wines.
Last but not least, establish a clear budget before embarking on your wine gift journey. Fortunately, there are exceptional options available for every price point. Whether you're seeking an affordable yet delightful bottle or an exquisite vintage, knowing your budget ensures you make a selection that aligns with your financial parameters.
For a delightful selection of Christmas wines that cater to all tastes and budgets, explore the exquisite offerings at shopwinesociety.com. If you have any questions or need personalized assistance, feel free to reach out at (516) 484-0660. Elevate your Christmas gift with the perfect wine choice!

Evan Williams Gourmet Honey Mustard
Despite this, curiosity in Mustard had declined within the 1700s, partly due to the introduction of latest spices from the Far East. In 1856, Jean Naigeon of Dijon, France substituted verjus (the acidic juice from not fairly ripe grapes) for vinegar in prepared mustard. Thus Dijon Mustard, the smooth gourmet mustard recipes, less-acidic Mustard was born and created renewed interest in the condiment. This secured Dijon, France because the world's capital of Mustard. A few weeks after my Mr. Wonton, and since all I could speak about was my mustard quest, I talked about to a friend the Chinese meals thing.
People produce beer mustard utilizing beer in the place of vinegar. On the other hand, spirited mustard consists of both spirits and vinegar. Unlike other best gourmet mustard forms of mustard which has a yellow hue, French mustard is a paste with a particular brown shade.

You will not usually find too many name-brand products on their shelves, as Aldi's stock is stocked with over 90% of their very own non-public brands corresponding to Burman's which makes a speciality of condiments. Daily Chef is a brand that is part of Member's Mark, which is owned by Sam's Club. While the warehouse club store is well-known for several delectable treats from their very own brands, this organic yellow mustard falls flat.

Our gourmet mustards use one hundred gourmet mustard wholesale pc recent components with no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Maille Dijon mustard has a creamy texture, spicy style and easy end.
They share a powdery texture and come from plant-based sources. Some chefs and meals corporations go as far as to make use of wasabi powder as a substitute of dried mustard because of the additional zing it provides. When selecting the best brands of mustard, we needed to make certain gourmet mustard brands that we found only the highest-quality elements available. We examined every brand for taste, texture, and total high quality. These seeds aren’t just limited to condiments – with their bitter style, they’re excellent for adding an additional edge to dishes like Indian curries or Italian mustards.
To achieve this, she appeared closely at the quality of the ingredients and sure elements of the dietary value, which, in flip, helped us decide which brands are in the end higher for your well being. To taste the mustards blind, we served them in unlabeled containers with items of simmered Sabrett all-beef sizzling canines on the aspect. Tasters weren't allowed to debate the mustards or their impressions through the tasting.
Although it doesn’t embody sugar or white wine, the sweet taste makes you surprise if there might be any vinegar within the combine. It works nicely for salad dressings and will also go as a sauce for various selfmade delicacies. It will not do you any good to rigorously source gluten-free scorching canine if the mustard you're placing in your canine is not secure. Fortunately, respectable gluten-free mustard selections abound for those of us following the gluten-free diet.
Doing everything potential to fulfill the most demanding culinary preferences of execs and connoisseurs of high quality gourmet mustard is the motto of the corporate. Firstly, it wasn’t well seasoned and didn’t taste as good as its competition.

Christmas Shopping with the Akatsuki // Part Six // Kisame
When Kisame was growing up, his parents didn’t celebrate ANY holidays, much less Christmas. “Human nonsense”, his father would say, his wife nodding in agreement. And Kisame never saw the appeal of this practice … until he came to the Akatsuki. Several members of the group have been talking his ear off about how special of a time a year this was, and Kisame can’t help but be affected by their enthusiasm. And he has to admit, some of the aspects of this time of year are quite charming. The cold-weather clothing, the kitschy music, the colorful lights and the decorated trees … all of it takes on a new and somewhat tantalizing light for the gentle giant. So, like the others, he gathers up his savings and heads out to find the best gifts to match the many personalities around him.
Zetsu
Zetsu’s eating habits are “tolerated” by the majority of the Akatsuki, but most members don’t ever ask him specifics about the things he chooses to eat. And Kisame can understand this; hybrid creatures such as themselves often have culinary tastes that would be found strange (and sometimes horrifying) to those around them who partake in more conventional diets. But Kisame talks to Zetsu about his eating habits a lot, and one thing he knows (that the others don’t) is that Zetsu is a connoisseur of spices. And not just salt and pepper, either. Zetsu enjoys seasoning his various meats with a variety of domestic and foreign spices, like cumin, and paprika, and sage and onion and a plethora of things. But spices of any kind are often hard to come by in their neck of the woods. Kisame runs into a bit of luck, though; on a mission with Itachi to a very distant village, he discovers a shop that specializes specifically in exotic spices. So Kisame puts together a kit for Zetsu, filled with the most lavish spices he can get his hands on, and brings it back home with him. He wraps his box and keeps it in his closet until Christmas, hoping that Zetsu’s fine-tuned olfactory senses dont route it out before then.
Kakuzu
After Itachi and Kisame himself, Kakuzu is the third biggest tea-drinker in the house. He often has a steaming cup or two before he leaves on missions with Hidan, as he says the hot liquid helps to center him and “prepare” him for whatever nonsense he’ll inevitably have to put up with from his young Jashin-crazed partner. Kisame often wonders why Kakuzu just doesn’t take tea with him on the road, until he realizes that it’s because the older man doesn’t have a portable to-go mug in which to do so. And knowing how frugal he was, there wasn’t a chance of him getting one for himself anytime soon. So Kisame takes the initiative and gets Kakuzu a dark blue hot liquid traveling cup, insulated and guaranteed to keep beverages hot for up to four hours. And the thing was made of a nice thick steel, meaning it wouldn’t break if dropped, which Kisame was sure Kakuzu must do several times a day, in order to run after his partner during missions.
Tobi
Tobi isn’t all idiocy and candy-eating, and Kisame knows this from personal experience. Once, the two of them were sent on a mission together. They made camp for the night, and Kisame fell asleep. He woke up in the middle of the night to low rustling sounds, and, looking up, he could see Tobi in a clearing in the distance, doing what looked like … a dance. A very slow, graceful dance involving moving his hands and swaying in the night breezes. Kisame could see Tobi’s mask laying on the ground, although the distance was too far and it was too dark to see Tobi’s face. Kisame had watched, mesmerized, until he fell back asleep. He asked Tobi about it, timidly, the next morning. Not really expecting Tobi to answer. But Tobi had surprised him and the two had their first serious conversation since the day they’d met. Tobi had explained that the series of foreign-based “meditative dances” he was doing, or Wu Tao, was good for both blood and chakra flow, and helped him to relieve tension and stress. Kisame never mentioned it again, to Tobi or the others; but occasionally he’d look out his window late at night and see Tobi in the distance, doing his dances. Always the same five dances, though. So Kisame goes to a bookstore and finds him a comprehensive guide on multiple dancing and meditation techniques, along with some comfortable, loose clothing in which to practice this art form. He might actually join Tobi in his meditation himself one day, IF Tobi was willing to teach him, that is.
Deidara
If asked, Kisame would say that Deidara was one of his favorite members of the entire group. True, the kid was loud and often erratic and highly opinionated; but with Deidara, what you saw was what you got. He was one of the most straightforward and honest people Kisame had ever met in his life, and he stuck to his guns on any situation, no matter the consequences. Kisame’s been partnered with him a few times in the past, so he’s gotta to know him a tiny bit. One thing the two share in common is an extensive love and appreciation for seafood. The two often went fishing together in their downtime, and always had fun grilling up the things they caught. But grilling or roasting was all either of them really knew how to do on their own, and Deidara especially often talks about wishing he knew how to cook better. The answer comes to Kisame as he’s passing through a foreign village; a specialty seafood restaurant that not only cooks your food at the table, but gives you step by step lessons on how to prepare various types of fish. It’s a bit pricey, but Kisame figures this is like a gift for him as well; and he gets himself and Deidara a reservation for the day after Christmas. Kisame can’t wait for the two of them to go, and his mouth waters thinking about all the new techniques and recipes they’re going to learn.
Nagato
Nagato. The Akatsuki’s esteemed leader, and Kisame’s good friend. Kisame has gotten along with Nagato since the day the two met each other, and Kisame was one of the first to see Nagato outside of his Pein body. Whenever he has downtime, Kisame always enjoys going to Nagato’s room with a pot of tea, and the two have interesting conversations about the world around them. One of the things Nagato likes to talk about is how much he misses traveling in his own form. It’s difficult now, of course, with Nagato’s various health issues. On his travels, Nagato used to have a penchant for collecting little figurines from the villages he passed through. In particular, birds. Birds represented freedom to Nagato, something that’s become all the more important to him in his later years. Because Kisame knows this, he’s actually been preparing Leader’s gift for months in advance. Over the past year, every different village he’s been to, Kisame has made sure to get a clay or crystal bird from the shops. Some plain, some colored, some depicted walking and some shown in flight. About 20 in all, each one unique. Kisame painstakingly writes out little note cards for each bird, about the village it came from. On Christmas Day, he plans to sneak into Nagato’s room with the tiny portable shelf that Sasori helped him build, and set up his new figurines on it. It’s a bit different from everyone else’s gifts, maybe, but one that Kisame is positive the redhead will appreciate.
Hidan
This kid … Kisame avoids him when he can. The foul mouth is hard to take, and his overall loudness isn’t something that the calm and quiet-loving Kisame appreciates. The two share very little in common, except for one thing: their love for their weapons. Hidan takes as good a care of his scythe as Kisame takes care of Samehada, but still; with all those rituals he does, Hidan’s blades naturally show the effects of rust and wear. So one day while Hidan is distracted elsewhere, Kisame goes into his room and takes measurements of the blades. Then he goes to a specialty weapons crafting shop and has brand new ones made. Normally this would cost a great deal, but Kisame is old friends with the craftsman in question, so he saves a good deal on some pretty beautiful work. The new blades are razor-sharp and sparkle like the sun. Kisame carefully tucks them away in a drawer, waiting to be gifted on Christmas Day.
Sasori
Ah, Sasori. What to get for the man who claims to need nothing? Well, if it’s one thing Kisame has heard time and time again from the small redhead, was how “dull” immortality was. Sasori often lamented that he felt he never came across any great challenges anymore, that everything was “cruelly easy” for him. So it occurs to Kisame that perhaps the best “gift” for Sasori is something that will challenge his mind and his skills; which is where Konan comes in:
Konan
Sweet, caring Konan. One of Kisame’s best friends and confidantes within the Akatsuki. Kisame feels like he can talk to Konan about anything, and she’s shown that she trusts him for the same, even going as far to tell him some about her troubled childhood. He learns about her parents being killed when she was a girl, and how she, Nagato, and a now-deceased friend of theirs struggled to survive. “I don’t remember much about my mother”, she’d told him, sighing, “But I remember how she smelled.” She shows him a small bottle she’s kept for nearly twenty years, the last bottle of perfume that her mother wore. It’s down to the last few drops and barely holding on to its scent. She’s searched for years for this particular perfume, but nothings come close to it. So Kisame manages to get the bottle from its hiding spot while Konan is away on a mission, and takes it to Sasori. “Can you duplicate this?” And Sasori, is ecstatic. Finally, finally, a challenge. He and Kisame spend days analyzing the faint scent of the bottle, mixing together many different herbs and extracts and having zetsu bring them different flowers, trying to recreate this precious thing from Konan’s childhood. Sasori works on it even when Kisame sleeps, so intent is he to complete this “mission”. At last, a breakthrough: he’s done it. He’s found the exact right blend of floral notes, and put them together in the correct quantities. Kisame goes out to buy a decorative glass bottle, and he can’t help but grin at the smile on Sasori’s face, as he pours the liquid into it and tightly caps it off. Kisame returns Konan’s original bottle to it’s spot, and when he goes back to Sasori’s room to get the new one, the puppet-man thanks him for “a really great time.” Two “gifts” in one bottle, and Kisame can’t wait to see the look on Konan’s face, when she takes the first whiff.
Itachi
Itachi’s gift proves to be the hardest of all, in Kisame’s mind. The young brunette always insists that he never wants or needs anything. He hadn’t even wanted anything for his own birthday back in June. But Kisame knows how much Itachi suffers during the holiday season, thinking about his family and his past life. Kisame cares about his partner as if the two were family themselves, and wants to give him something that would truly make him happy. He gets an idea of sorts when he finds Deidara wrapping what HE got Itachi for Christmas: cat-shaped Russian nesting dolls. “Wanted to get him a real cat, hm, but Konan and Hidan are allergic.” Kisame asks Deidara what he thinks about him maybe getting Itachi a hypo-allergenic cat, one that wouldn’t shed, to which the blonde is enthusiastic. “That’s great, Kisame no Danna, hm. But ask the allergic ones first, maybe.” So Kisame does, and both Konan and Hidan are agreeable to the idea of living with a cat that won’t shed. So Kisame (with Deidara and Konan in tow) goes to a shelter to check out hypo allergenic breeds, and finds one that all three fall in love with: a little black and white female Sphynx, barely three months old. Kisame arranges for the shelter to keep the cat for him until Christmas eve, and afterwards he and Deidara and Konan go to the pet store and pick out a small pink collar, toys, a litter box and cat food. Kisame smiles to himself later that night, as he looks at the wrapped goods sitting in his closet. He’s positive that not only Itachi but the whole group will love the cat, and he can hardly wait until Christmas Eve, to introduce everyone to the newest member of the family.

Ten Innovators to Watch in 2021
https://sciencespies.com/nature/ten-innovators-to-watch-in-2021/
Ten Innovators to Watch in 2021
This past year left us with no shortage of incredible innovations, chief among them Covid-19 vaccines. Following a harrowing 2020, we’re excited to see how innovators continue to push the envelope and bring forth what they think the world needs. From celebrating and honoring black history to improving the mental health of K-12 students, we’re keeping our eyes on these ten groundbreakers as they share their visions with the world.
Chicken-less Egg Connoisseur Arturo Elizondo
Arturo Elizondo
(Clara Foods)
“Like any good Mexican, I had two eggs for breakfast every morning, and like any good Texan I had my barbeque every Sunday,” says Arturo Elizondo. But when he learned about the devastating impacts that livestock has on the environment, he set out to find a better, more sustainable way to produce animal protein. In 2014, he co-founded Clara Foods with cell biologist David Anchel with a mission to take animals out of animal proteins.
Similar to how brewers use yeast to convert sugar into alcohol for beer, Clara Foods uses yeast and sugar to produce animal protein. Specifically, Elizondo and his team are working to produce egg proteins—one of the most challenging to find alternatives for. One trillion eggs are consumed across the globe each year, but it takes a whopping 600 gallons of water to produce a dozen eggs, he says. Since they’re so versatile and globally loved, Clara Foods is offering a cleaner alternative so that people can still enjoy eggs in all their culinary forms without the tremendous environmental impact.
Clara Foods has been knee-deep in research and development for the last six years, but the company is officially coming out of their “eggshell” in 2021 when they launch the world’s first egg protein made without a chicken, Elizondo says.
Problem-Solving Wunderkind Gitanjali Rao
Gitanjali Rao
(Gitanjali Rao)
As a 15-year-old, Gitanjali Rao is the youngest innovator on our list, but she’s certainly one to watch. She’s already tackling some of the greatest problems affecting current generations: lack of access to clean water, opioid addiction and cyberbullying.
After hearing about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, Rao was shocked to learn that people in the United States and beyond still don’t have access to safe, clean water. In response, she invented Tethys—a sensor that can detect lead in water and upload results from the water sample to an app, allowing users to quickly and affordably see if water is safe to drink. She’s also worked to address the opioid crisis by developing Epione, a way to diagnose prescription opioid addictions for patients at the onset of addiction, after hearing about a family friend who developed an addiction after a car accident. And to address cyberbullying—a problem especially relevant to her age group—Rao developed Kindly, an artificial intelligence-powered software that detects hurtful or harmful messages and then prompts users to rephrase what they send. Her thoughtful, problem-solving innovations earned her the title of TIME’s 2020 Kid of the Year.
“My motivation to solve problems in society started in a very simple manner: to solve problems that we face on a daily basis,” she says. “I try my best to understand them and look for ways to address them. I am not always successful, but the few times [I’ve succeeded,] I feel like I have contributed in some way.”
To inspire others to innovate, Rao has connected with about 35,000 students across four continents and has more events planned in the coming months. As she moves forward in 2021, Rao says she has more ideas in the works and that she’ll continue developing her current innovations as she searches for the partners to help her out.
Storytelling Composer Barron Ryan
Barron Ryan
(Daniel Charles Folkers)
On May 31, 1921, a mob of white residents attacked the Greenwood District, a predominantly black neighborhood, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in what’s known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. The attack—one of the worst acts of racial violence in American history—continued through the next day as the mob killed more than 300 black Tulsans, displaced 10,000 others and burned more than 35 city blocks to the ground.
To commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Chamber Music Tulsa commissioned composer and performer Barron Ryan to tell the story of the tragedy through a piano trio. As a Tulsa native, Ryan says that it’s important for him to tell this story—a story that needs to be remembered. “It’s an integral part of who I am, and I’m honored to do it,” he says.
“Music can tell a story without using words, [and it] has an unparalleled ability to communicate” Ryan says, which is what he aspires to do with his trio. In composing the piece, he looked through firsthand accounts of the massacre. He read about a woman who hid with her daughter and read psalms as the attack raged on. Psalm 88:3 spoke to Ryan, and it ultimately inspired the melody. One of the verses reads, “My soul is full of troubles,” which Ryan borrowed as the title of his trio.
He hopes that his music inspires people to reflect on the Tulsa Race Massacre and to be courageous—to do what’s right and not simply what is easy, he says. “I’m hoping that it’s well received, and that we remember our history as Tulsans and learn the right lessons and not repeat something like this again.”
Transit Trailblazer Andrea Ponti
Andrea Ponti
(Andrea Ponti)
The Covid-19 pandemic brought public transportation to a screeching halt as people who had the means to travel in their own private vehicles opted to do so. Andrea Ponti, the founder and director of Ponti Design Studio, took the opportunity to re-think and re-plan how we get around. Inspired by social distancing, he developed Island, an electric tram designed for a post-pandemic Hong Kong, the city where he resides.
“When the pandemic took over Hong Kong, many people turned to private transport causing a dramatic increase in traffic, pollution and noise,” he says. “What makes Island attractive is that it helps to solve all those problems. The bottom line is technology needs good design in order to be efficient and accessible to most people, and I think Island might be an example of that.”
Instead of sitting in rows, the tram’s seats are organized in circles, or “islands,” seating people with their backs towards each other so they can look out the window instead of facing others. “To me that is a safer way to commute and a fun way to take in the city sights and see Hong Kong from a different viewpoint,” he says. Plus, the tram is electric and driverless, making it eco-friendlier and more efficient.
“As a designer I really like the challenge of re-imagining products and services that we often take for granted and that can be greatly impacted by social changes—in this case re-designing trams at the time of social distancing in a metropolis like Hong Kong where social distancing is hard to practice,” he says.
Ponti started developing Island in March 2020 and has since modeled the tram and produced a number of prototypes. Moving forward in 2021, he is working to scale the protypes, move into the testing phase and secure a partner to produce Island.
Honoring Black History with Anitra Belle Henderson
Anitra Belle Henderson
(Lemaris Alston)
In 1860, a plantation owner smuggled in a shipload of 110 African people to Alabama on the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to arrive in the United States, decades after the U.S. had banned the importation of enslaved people. When enslaved people were freed in 1865, survivors of the Clotilda couldn’t afford to return to Africa, so they founded Africatown instead, a bustling town rooted in their homelands and cultures.
After years of searching for the long-lost Clotilda, a team of historians and archaeologists finally discovered it at the bottom of Alabama’s Mobile River in 2019. Now, the City of Mobile will open a heritage house in the summer of 2021 to tell the story of the Clotilda‘s survivors and of Africatown.
“We are excited to help the community tell their story,” says Anitra Belle Henderson, the executive director of communications and external affairs for the City of Mobile and the lead on all the Africatown projects. “Our goal is for visitors to understand more about those who were enslaved. They have a name and a story.”
The heritage house is designed to be an immersive experience. Visitors will feel the waves of the ocean like the enslaved people felt on their voyage, read stories of the slave trade and be introduced to the survivors of the Clotilda. They’ll also be able to visit Africatown, where many descendants of the Clotilda‘s survivors still reside.
“Each detail of the heritage house was designed with reverence to the ancestors, descendants and the community,” Belle Henderson says. “Those who are curious about African culture can visit an African community on American soil—a community that was built with hope and promise.”
“The many stories show the diverse brilliance of black people,” she says. “Since the [discovery] of the Clotilda there has been a new excitement in the community. Educating people about Africatown’s past will definitely create a bright future for a community that so deserves the attention it is receiving.”
Nautical Visionary Brett Phaneuf
Brett Phaneuf
(IBM)
In April 2021, the Mayflower Autonomous Ship, one of the world’s first full-sized self-navigating ships, will set sail from the United Kingdom’s Plymouth Harbor and traverse the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It will retrace the voyage made by the original Mayflower in 1620 that brought Pilgrims to New England, but instead of looking back at 400 years of history, it represents what the next wave of nautical advances will look like.
The Mayflower Autonomous Ship is a collaboration between the marine research organization ProMare and IBM, which developed the ship’s artificial intelligence systems that will allow it to navigate unassisted across the ocean. The Mayflower team is hoping to revolutionize ocean research by creating an affordable option for scientists to study the ocean without necessarily being on board a ship. Without needing to worry about the logistics for housing people on board, like sleeping, eating and sanitation, the ship can accommodate more technology, like cameras and sensors, and stay out at sea longer.
“If it works as designed, then it will substantially drive down the cost of collecting data at sea,” says Phaneuf, a co-founder and co-director of the Mayflower Autonomous Ship project. “This will lead to [a] better understanding of our oceans and climate.”
Phaneuf’s biggest hope for the Mayflower is that it makes it across the ocean and sparks the conversation about how autonomous ships can be used to study the high seas. During this first voyage, the ship will collect meteorological and oceanographic data as well as water samples to study microplastic distribution.
Student Advocate Samantha Pratt
Samantha Pratt
(Samantha Pratt)
Two thirds of all U.S. youth face at least one trauma by age 16 that can stem from poverty, racism, domestic or community violence, or substance abuse, says Samantha Pratt, the CEO and founder of KlickEngage.
“Students carry heavy emotional backpacks into the classroom every day that they cannot put down,” she says. “I was teaching high-need students in an overcrowded classroom and could not check in with each of my students every day in order to address their issues. Out of urgent need, I decided that I had to find a way to streamline student self-report.”
To do so, Pratt designed KlickEngage—an app that allows users to self-report their mental state each day by completing a two-minute survey. The app, which has reached thousands of kids, then provides students with targeted coping mechanisms while delivering real-time data to educators so that they can identify and supports students carrying heavy emotional loads, Pratt says. Schools have the ability to make a huge impact for students by providing health services and resources, but they’re often limited and underfunded.
“By directly serving students, teachers and schools, we limit the impacts of adverse experiences on school engagement in early years of education so that there is a higher likelihood of student success in later years, breaking the cycle of trauma and poverty,” Pratt says.
Students are still facing adversities, plus the compounded issues brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, such as unemployment, food insecurity and fear-based anxiety, Pratt says. Since KlickEngage is able to be adapted for a physical or virtual learning environment, it can help educators check in with students, even from a distance. In 2021, KlickEngage is planning to grow its impact and reach more classrooms.
Pandemic-Inspired Architects Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg
Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg
(Vincent Tullo)
In 2020, homes transformed into all-in-one offices, gyms, daycares, classrooms, vacation destinations and restaurants as people’s lives became confined to their residences. As a result, people noticed just how important their home environment is to their mental and emotional wellbeing, say Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg, the founding partners of SO–IL, an architecture and design firm.
At the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Liu and Idenburg were in the beginning stages of designing a new 30-unit residential building in Brooklyn. They also found themselves adjusting to living and working from home with their two daughters, and they say that experience helped shape the design for the new building, to be completed in 2022. Now that people are home all the time, Liu and Idenburg needed to create a space that was both multi-functional and comfortable for residents. For example, they moved bedrooms to opposite sides of the apartment to muffle noise and distractions, which are typically clustered together. They also incorporated multiple outdoor spaces for each unit, creating easy access to fresh air and sunshine.
The pandemic has highlighted what people really need in their homes, and architecture trends in the future will reflect that, they say. “The main lesson to take away is that the lifespan of a building will be longer than the interval between pandemics,” they say. “From a sustainability standpoint, we should endeavor to build buildings that last ‘forever.’ It means we need to design for future pandemics.”
Mosquito-Trapping Mastermind Kennyjie
Kennyjie
(Eric Lau)
When industrial designer Kennyjie (he prefers to go by just his first name) was 12 years old, he contracted dengue fever—a flu-like disease transmitted by mosquitos—while living in Indonesia. “Being able to afford long hospital care, I was one of the privileged kids who walked out alive,” he says. Mosquito-borne disease prevention has remained an issue close to his heart, and it’s the driving force behind his new innovation, Quito.
While visiting Bali, Kennyjie noticed that the mosquito prevention tactics were inconvenient and ineffective, so he set out to design his own. Quito, which made the International Top 20 for the James Dyson Award in 2020, uses a simple chemical reaction to produce carbon dioxide and an artificial human odor to attract mosquitoes, and then it vacuums them into a chamber. By luring mosquitoes in instead of repelling them, Quito reduces their local population and the chance of disease transmission. It’s designed to be placed in tropical resorts to lessen the likelihood of an outbreak as people travel in and out of the region.
Kennyjie traveled through multiple Indonesian villages to ensure that Quito’s design is informed by the local culture, economy and climate so that it fits into the “geographical context in which it is needed,” he says. This year, Kennyjie will continue running more tests from his home in Melbourne, Australia, until international borders are open and he can start pilot tests in Indonesia.

The Lockdown Weight Loss Training Programme
The coronavirus lockdown has taught everyone different skills. Some have become culinary connoisseurs. Others, armchair philosophers. Quite a few people have bonded beautifully with family. Many others are dangerously close to murdering theirs. Essentially, most of us have morphed into cousins of who we were three months back.
Not me. I’m not one to go full Batman on a cosmically mandated vacation. In most matters, I remain as happily gauche as ever. For instance, I’m still a novice at chopping veggies. I think people who can peel karela* and shred cabbage deserve bravery awards, or at least a free Netflix subscription.
According to my mother, I am also an abject failure at the art of hanging laundry on the clothesline. I can never quite remember all her parameters – coloured ones in, whites out, heavy clothes in front, thin ones behind, trousers in corners, pockets hanging out, bedsheets in one balcony, office clothes in another – it is a science more complex than quantum physics, and I simply can’t seem to memorize its guiding principles.
What I am able to do perfectly though, is find opportunities for weight loss in the randomest of things. In that sense, my one big win during this lockdown has been discovering new ways to lose weight.
Most of these methods I wouldn’t normally have thought of, but then, twelve weeks of isolation do interesting things to the human brain. This post exists because I feel my wisdom is worth sharing with the world. We may have hit Unlock 1.0 here in India, but for all practical purposes, we are still under house arrest. In that sense, there is still plenty of scope for people to benefit from these life-altering realisations of mine.
Read on to learn how you can minimise your girth by maximising the lockdown.
1. Nobody needs a fancy gym membership if they can summon a little creativity. For instance, while doing the dishes, keep the utensil basket an arm’s length away. This way, each time you rinse a vessel and reach out for the basket, you will be giving yourself an extensive arm workout. Bonus: if the menfolk refuse to help with chores, you could lure them saying the vessel-basket game will help them grow biceps (and if you’re a man reading this, don’t be an asshole – do your bit).
2. Want a perfectly trim tummy? Keep your laundry basket on the floor, bend down to pick each garment, and do a high jump when you land the garment on the clothesline. Bend, pick, aim, hop, repeat. Do this for twelve weeks and you will have Barbie’s waistline. Heck, you may even add an inch or two in height.
3. Pretend you are the Chairman of your housing society and that the idiot residents of the building will die without your scrutiny. Pace up and down the corridor of your floor for twenty minutes every day, while looking left and right, up and down in turns. Then repeat this exercise on the floor above, the floor below, and all the other floors of the building. In three months’ time, you will lose 20 kilos, your triple chin, and the motivation to donate your hard-earned money at the gym.
4. Take charge of sweeping and mopping your house. If your family comprises as many women as mine, you are blessed. Your floor is likely to be covered with assorted hair strands – long, short, black, white, thick as wire, thin as my patience, and so on. If you try to sweep those pesky things off the floor, they will invariably get entangled with your broom, or worse, choke up your vacuum cleaner. Instead, bend down and scoop them up yourself, tying them up into neat little balls that you can gleefully toss out of the window into the bin. Then, throw your fancy new mop-with-a-handle away and pick up the traditional pochha** instead, going down on all fours à la Sakubai. Voila! In twelve weeks, you will grunt and groan your way to a Kardashian-style bum, minus any surgical intervention.
5. Most people turn to dumbbells and treadmills to lose weight, without realising that the most potent instrument of weight loss is, in fact, miniature humans. If you have children of your own, you already know this. But if not, I recommend this fool-proof exercise regime known as the Borrow-A-Kid method. If you don’t know whose kid to borrow, just put up a solicitation on Facebook. At least a dozen exasperated friends will rush to deposit the fruit of their loins at your doorstep. Once their children are yours to chase around, you will lose weight faster than Trump lost his conscience.
6. If you’re a teacher, motivational speaker, or just generally an Indian uncle, this must be a tough time for you. Considering that your life essentially revolves around giving advice, it must suck to have no one to enlighten. Well, this can be managed: just be your family’s official volunteer for grocery rounds. You will encounter quite a few people (the grocer, neighbours, security guards) en route, who might benefit from a sermon on how to safeguard against the virus. Not only will you get to disseminate gyaan like a guru, you will also burn your fair share of calories walking to the store and back. Two birds with one trip! Keep ‘em masks and gloves handy though, because the virus might be waiting to pounce on you.
7. If all else fails, pretend it’s Diwali. Replace the newspaper lining your cupboards. Clean the fans and tubelights. Air out the mattresses and rugs. Pull out your mum’s fancy crockery set – the one that belonged to her great-grand-mother and hasn’t been used in thirty years – and wipe each piece down with a muslin cloth. Toss your old soft toys into the washing machine. Round up all the sneakers that exist in the house, and clean one pair a day. If you’re a South Indian like me, you’re sure to have an ornate oil lamp made of brass. Those things get dull over time. Spend an hour looking at Buzzfeed videos on how to restore their glory, then pick up some ketchup / lemons / baking soda / whatever floats your boat, and get scrubbing. And if ALL of this doesn’t wear you out, ask the neighbours how you can be of help.
Come to think of it, the exodus of domestic help this lockdown, coupled with a total lack of things to do and the absence of Zomato, makes for the greatest Get-In-Shape moment in the history of modern civilisation. This is your chance – to prove yourself the ultimate domestic God(dess) while also growing the ultimate hot bod. Imagine the ‘Before’ and ‘After’ photo collage you’ll get to post on Instagram after all this is over. Heck, imagine the looks and hoots you’ll get when you walk out into the world 20 kilos leaner. Sounds delicious, eh?
Get going then. There is still enough time to join the revolution. *karela: An Indian vegetable, also referred to as bitter gourd
**pochha: A traditional mop used in India. You have to go down on your haunches to scrub the floor with this one.

he wakes and all is well: a Good Omens Valentine’s Day oneshot
I volunteered to be an emergency match for @goloveday and got to write a small gift for @btab66 It’s a little piece of fluff that I had fun writing and hope you enjoy!
Title: he wakes and all is well Fandom: Good Omens Pairing: Ineffable Husbands (Aziraphale/Crowley) Rating: G Word count: 1k
Read it on AO3 or below the cut!
Aziraphale wakes up. He’s not used to waking up, not yet, because he is not used to sleeping, but he thinks that he could grow to like it, because sleeping means listening to the deep rhythm of Crowley’s breath until all is serene and still, means all of his senses being filled with Crowley at the start of every day.
He’s warm, because he wakes up in the flannel sheets they bought together, Crowley and he, and they had bickered about colors and patterns before coming to agreement: warm ivory sheets and duvets as deep as the night sky.
Sunlight is streaming in through the open window; it must be nearly noon, and that reminds the angel of just how late they’d stayed up the night before, drinking and playing chess and fibbing outrageously about their own past involvement in historical events. The night before that it had been tapas and a debate about which Shakespeare theories had the least merit. The night before that had been silence and firelight and warm blankets.
Crowley isn’t there, but that is alright. The warmth of him lingers in the sheets, the scent of him is wrapped around Aziraphale like an extra blanket. And Aziraphale can wake up to his absence without dread, these days. His fears have subsided in the face of long years of habitual contentedness and safety.
And he smells pancakes. Neither of them has any great culinary expertise, but it has been pleasant to start learning together. Attempts which Aziraphale would have found tedious on his own become delightful when Crowley sneaks up behind him for a hug or holds out a spoonful of whatever they’re making for him to try. So now they mostly eat breakfast at home, and mornings stretch later and later into the day, and everything is perfect.
Aziraphale gets out of bed and pulls on his dressing gown as he makes his way to the kitchen. It’s a funny thing: he would bet that he’s spent more time in his living quarters in the past four years than in the previous two centuries combined. They’re small but have never once felt cramped with Crowley here. Sharing a home with his love is a luxury Aziraphale is sure can never lose its luster.
In the kitchen, American pancakes and a cup of tea are waiting for Aziraphale, piping hot—as they no doubt would still have been even if it had taken him hours longer to leave bed.
“Morning,” says Crowley. He’s propped up inelegantly at the other side of the table, both hands wrapped around a mug of coffee.
“And to you.”
Aziraphale sits and begins eating.
Crowley watches him.
Crowley often watches him—has been watching him since the Very Beginning, to the point that Aziraphale finds it impossible (not to mention distinctly unpleasant) to imagine Earth without Crowley’s watching. Aziraphale is, by this point, something of a connoisseur of being watched by Crowley, of the ways in which Crowley watches him: for the pleasure of a lovely thing to look at (which is flattering); to look for signs of weakness as he presents some argument or plan (which is now mercifully rare); to wait for something (which had used to flummox poor Aziraphale until he learned that the demon loved him back); to see if Aziraphale is going to ask.
He seems to love being asked. Crowley had been very forward about the whole Arrangement—perhaps as a matter of necessity—but Aziraphale has learned over the millennia that Crowley loves to wait, loves to be asked, invited, welcomed.
And Aziraphale does so love to indulge him.
“My dear,” he says lightly after a sip of tea. “This breakfast was such a lovely surprise to wake up to.”
The demon only makes a noncommittal noise, but there is nothing that Aziraphale has studied as much as Crowley’s face: the demon is holding something back.
“May I know the occasion?” he asks.
There—there’s the moment of indecision, of Crowley warring with himself over whether to preserve his aloof facade. But Aziraphale knows the demon will give in.
Not without a struggle, though: “Do I need an occasion to make breakfast?” Crowley asks.
“Goodness no,” says Aziraphale. “All the same…” he lets the sentence trail off to nothing, leaves his words hanging in the air like an invitation, and returns nonchalantly to his breakfast.
Not even a minute later, Crowley appears to give up. “It’s our anniversary,” he blurts out.
Aziraphale smiles. “Is it?”
Crowley is forever finding anniversaries for them. The anniversary of the Arrangement, of their first drink together, their first shared meal, their first night sleeping side-by-side. The anniversary of the night that Crowley rescued Aziraphale’s books during the blitz. The anniversary of the first time they fed ducks. Sometimes Aziraphale suspects that they’ll get to a point where not a week passes without an anniversary of some sort, some little celebration that Crowley has invented for them, because Crowley remembers. He hoards their milestones like a dragon’s treasure. If Aziraphale had known that before, it would have been heartbreaking. Now, though—now, when they are safe and able to celebrate anything they wish—it is a delight.
“First date,” Crowley says.
“That can’t be right. Our first date was in September, four years ago.”
Crowley shakes his head. “Not like that. The first time we made an actual plan to see each other, without the excuse of the Arrangement. Didn’t just...find each other.”
“When—oh, do you mean the theatre?”
The demon nods and rewards him with a little smile.
“Gracious, how long has it been?”
“Dunno,” says Crowley. “Just remember the date.”
February 14, 1895, Aziraphale thinks it was—one hundred and twenty-nine years. The opening of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest at St James’s Theatre. He’d never thought of it that way before, but Crowley’s classification of it as a date makes sense: the very first time they’d shed the careful pretext of the Arrangement or of happenstance. Not the first step, certainly, but an important step on the road that has led them here: to breakfast in the late morning sun, to nights spent close and cozy.
“That one was your idea,” Crowley says.
The first time Aziraphale asked.
“Well,” Aziraphale says, “you always did like the funny ones.”

HK Bars: Re-loaded
It’s vox populi that Hong Kong nights are great. The city is alive between the tetris buildings, live music venues, the poured-to-perfection drinks and the incomparable chill and fun vibe people foster. This is a re-vamp of the previous bar-hopping post on Bars in HK. This time, I had the opportunity to explore further and different neighborhoods with friends and fun colleagues.
Iron Fairies LG, 1 Hollywood Road, Central, Hong Kong.
With sister locations in Bangkok and Tokyo, this bar is undoubtedly great and one never gets tired of visiting either this or any of the other locations— and, in all cases, it’s quite unlike anywhere else in the city. Sutton’s establishments, one very well renown interior designer and bar entrepreneur, are known for mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, eclectic decor, and The Iron Fairies is no exception. Indeed, this is one bar you’ve got see in person to believe. In LifeStyle Asia Editor in Chief, Micheal Alan words’ the “metal-making tools line the walls, vials of ‘fairy dust’ hang from the ceiling in clusters and — most incredible of all — some 10,000 preserved butterflies dangle overhead, suspended on tiny metal rods (...) are incredible. Watching them sway back and forth is simply mesmerizing”. I guess I’ll have to go to the Tokyo one to make an Iron Fairies hat-trick!
Iron Fairy by LifeStyle Asia The Woods G, L, 17-19號 Hollywood Rd, Central, Hong Kong.
This was a great venue where I met my friend Sammie from Singapore. It’s an eclectic bar, around the main area of LKF, where a mirror door disguises it, and a museum-kind-of-display about different cocktail elements merged with design fashion runway aesthetics is part of the charm. Drinks were delicious and music was great. It’s a fantastic alternative to the mainstream happening in the neighborhood. I dared to have a different approach to an old fashion and it was delicious, with a little of spices and herbs. Great choice. Foxglove + Frank’s Library 18 Ice House St, Central, Hong Kong.
This is a great hidden speakeasy featured as a deluxe umbrella shop. Delightful venue, with even more striking and delicious drinks, with super charismatic bartenders made our stay a memorable one. There was this jazz band playing stellar music and then a Philippine guy took the mic and literally brought the house down with his songs (I mean, Frank Sinatra “Fly me to the Moon”, of coz!) and voice. It was so much fun! There’s a little speakeasy within the speakeasy called “Frank’s Library” and it serves a smaller, more selected list of drinks, in a library setting that isolates the music from Foxglove, turning this little bar into a cozier, more familiar one. The Old Man- Ernest Hemingway Lower G/F, 37-39 Aberdeen Street, Soho, Central, Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
Photo Credits: The Old Man - Ernest Hemingway Website Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to this one. I did have nights to spare, but some of them I just strolled around, got lost and experience some great night walks and dinners, where I ended up with food-commas and completely exhausted. But I’m gonna write it down so I don’t forget to go next time I’ll visit the hood. It was honored as one of the World’s Top 50 Bars in 2018, so it’s a set date for sure. With unique decor, on its website one can read the true inspiration and homage this place gives to the author: “He was a sophisticated drinker, a lover of fine spirits, and a true connoisseur who sought out the best bars from Paris to Pamplona. The Old Man honors Hemingway by taking inspiration from his novels, history, and folklore, and by using novel ingredients and culinary accoutrements – thereby paying tribute to the spirits and cocktails he loved.” Damn... just realized I walked by its door so many times... I guess this time wasn’t meant to be! Piqniq R/F (Rooftop) HQueens, 80 Queen's Road Central, Central, Hong Kong.
This is a nice surprise in the middle of Central HK. After a beautiful Yayoi Kusama art piece and strong pink and red decor that highlights the instagrammable worth of this rooftop, one finds a breathtaking terrace in the middle of Hong Kong skyscrapers with an unforgettable view of the bay and the mountains. A solo glass of prosecco, in between dinners and another bar date closer to the hotel, was exactly what I needed to bond with Hong Kong.
Sevva 10 Chater Rd, Central, Hong Kong.
This was a fantastic double recommendation from my friend Mau and my friend Angelica. I remember Angelica mentioned it the first time I went to HK but, as it was expected, I was on its door and didn’t manage to find it properly. But this time, I went and enjoyed one of the few last nights with my ex-boss. We managed to find it and dare to take the elevator to the beautiful heights of its bar. It had a great drink list which I decided to pass on and go with my default and solid choice of prosecco to quench my thirst on this warm and cloudy Hong Kong night. We toasted for the good times and for the success we had over these days regarding our pitch. It was a great experience which definitely made me grow as a professional and as a leader, where I needed to juggle, define, forecast and ask for the resources I needed to make it happen, that included a physical trip to this city to lead in-house workshops.
Skye Hong Kong, Causeway Bay, Gloucester Rd, 310號27樓
Skye Bar, provided by Pullman Hotel in Trip Advisor. Promise, this would be my last cheat-recco since I didn’t make it to this one either - although I managed to go to the Ozone Bar at the Ritz Carlton. This bar is similar, it’s part of the Pullman hotel chain, and the literal cherry on top it’s its funky rooftop bar. Looks fun and with a memorable view. Ophelia Shop F39A & F41A, 1/F, Lee Tung Avenue, 200 Queen's Rd E, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
What a bar! Also, quite hard to find in a small pedestrian street in Wan Chai, on a third or four floor, without a sign on it’s outside facade. It’s completely hidden to the naif eye. But this bar, on top of its completely outstanding fashion, hosted by a hot, tall, blond, thick-accented and not quite friendly Russian, is something to experience at least once or twice in a life time. They allowed us to seat on a reserved table since we arrived early and then, when prime time started, the weirdness also made their appearance. This bar has actual women laid down on it’s shelves and bars, with fans, burlesque and S&M outfits, as part of the kitsch decor. I didn’t know how to feel about that but certainly caught my attention and was something I’ve never seen before (and trust me, I’ve seen some weird s*it over the years and trips!)
Ping Pong 129 Second Street L/G Nam Cheong House, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong.
What a beautiful and great recco from my friend Pink. I wish we had made it together, but I saved the best for last. Hours before leaving to the airport and after a blogging session in a beautiful cafe near to my hotel (where I almost leave my credit card!) I went for a second-to-last drink to toast for this comeback to Asia and this amazing time in Hong Kong. Below a hidden normal door with no actual sign but an bull-eyed window that, after a closer look one realized is a ping pong paddle, there’s a long stairs that leads you to the best and probably only “Gintoneria” I’ve ever been to. People get crazy with Tequila or Wine bars, but man, this one, was finding Neverland for me. What a fantastic idea. More than Gintoneria, it was paradise. This beautiful neon means “Take care of your body. Seriously, can it get any better than this?? I ended up talking to a video designers and producers from China with rusty English but with tons of willingness to talk to me and make themselves understood from Shenzhen, and actually followed my company on Weibo and managed to connect to FB to follow and add me as a friend. What a great, great finding and an even more fantastic night, today’s font and dear memory!
