Being from South Texas with deep Mexican roots I wanted to try drawing “El Cucuy” which is our version of the Bogeyman! I wanted this illustration to look like panel of an old faded horror comic you saw in corner pile in a thrift store, one that left a deep impression on your mind and you never quite forgot about.

Day 24/31: "Cucuy"
In many regions that are of Hispanophone and Lusophone (mainly around Spain and Portugal). There’s an entity called the Cucuy (or Coca/Cuca in some cultures), equivalent to the boogeyman, that is known to stalk throughout the dark night. Preying on children who tend to misbehave and feasting of them. The opposite of a guardian angel, the Cucuy has the ability to shape shift into many forms, and hides in the shadow. Waiting til it makes it’s move to strike…

I was super excited to see Midnight Museum (it was a top for me when GMMTV showed its 2023 lineup), but I don't fuck with los espookys, so I gotta watch it during the day with the lights on.
And it's 15 episodes of this! FUCK!
Dome and Khatha better make out with tongue if I'm gonna be scared!
The things I do for colors.
#Midnight Museum#I gotta eff with los espookys?!#There is already a ghost!!!!!#And someone unhinges his jaw?!#No! This is not what I signed up for#Maybe I'll watch it on Sundays when the sun is shining bright and el cucuy can't get me#I'm being so brave about this

AAAAA Yamel Cucuy is the story of a girl on the precipice of adulthood, contending with the physical and metaphysical violence of borders. Yamel is hunted by immigration agents while haunted by specters from the folklore of her youth in Mexico. On the shadowy frontier between worlds, she forges her own spirit of courage and wisdom, in the refusal to be “taken away,” either by legendary phantoms or agents of human law. Blending sophisticated puppetry with live actors, Yamel Cucuy draws upon frightening folk tales and modern horror movies to create a terrifying psychological landscape of pitfalls both legal and spiritual. Created for adult and teen audiences. Not all theatre translates well to the screen, but we’re extremely proud of this horror-inspired play for its cinematic storytelling and spooky puppetry. This tale is appropriate for ages 13+ as it deals with themes of violence, death and revenge. So, gather your bravest friends and family members to meet the espantajos haunting our story: Las Lloronas, El Chupacabrón, La Lechuza, y El Viejo del Costal. Share your movie night plans with us in the comments of our Patreon page!
I was lucky enough to see this live and have been thinking about it ever since! If you have the chance, if you like puppetry and theater at all, please check out this show! More explicit warnings, under a cut for those who don't want to know ahead of time:
Yamel Cucuy deals with police brutality, especially in the US immigration system, racism, and harm to children/ death of children, often via a mythic storytelling approach, but with some more grounded scenes of interrogation and raids.
