The Coco or Coca (also known as the Cucuy, Cuco, Cuca, Cucu, Cucuí or El-Cucuí) is a mythical ghost-like monster, equivalent to the bogeyman, found in Spain and Portugal. Those beliefs have also spread in many Hispanophone and Lusophone countries. It can also be considered an Iberian version of a bugbear[1] as it is a commonly used figure of speech representing an irrational or exaggerated fear. The Cucuy is a male being while Cuca is a female version of the mythical monster. The "monster" will come to the house of disobedient children at night and take them away.

El Cucuy (Spanish: The Boogeyman)
Tumblr media
For many years, El Cucuy have inspired legends in Spanish speaking cultures of a bogeyman-like namesake who punishes those that have done wrong. The tale is especially used as motivation for children to listen to their parents. El Cucuy rarely woge in front of others to hide their identity. They behave in a vigilante-like manner and are known to administer justice (or at least vengeance) for those who seek it. Their attacks are very brutal, and their typical modus operandi involves aggressively slashing their victim's throat. They hold no sympathy for their victims and appear to actually enjoy delivering the fatal punishment.
El Cucuy are called to a community plagued by injustice by the collective cries of that respective community's women, and they then proceed to kill those plaguing that community, such as robbers, r*pists, dr*g lords, etc. one by one until it is safe again. After El Cucuy are finished in a community, they will move on to the nearest community in need of help.

Being from South Texas with deep Mexican roots I wanted to try drawing “El Cucuy” which is our version of the Bogeyman! I wanted this illustration to look like panel of an old faded horror comic you saw in corner pile in a thrift store, one that left a deep impression on your mind and you never quite forgot about.

This is Malach Vantablack. He is one of the primary villains for a story I have been cooking for what is awhile now. This is fairly old, but I honestly am very pleased with it. Especially if I give him an update in the future.
Here is a Spotify playlist for him:

Day 24/31: "Cucuy"
In many regions that are of Hispanophone and Lusophone (mainly around Spain and Portugal). There’s an entity called the Cucuy (or Coca/Cuca in some cultures), equivalent to the boogeyman, that is known to stalk throughout the dark night. Preying on children who tend to misbehave and feasting of them. The opposite of a guardian angel, the Cucuy has the ability to shape shift into many forms, and hides in the shadow. Waiting til it makes it’s move to strike…

Happy Storyteller Saturday!
What’s the earliest story you remember, a fairy tale or a legend you were told as a child? A cartoon you watched? Something else?
Happy STS, Sam! Thanks for the ask!
The earliest one that I can remember is the one of El Cucuy, which is basically Mexico's version of the boogeyman. The creature itself is said to be small, hairy, and misshapen, with bat-like ears, red glowing eyes, and sharp teeth. Pretty scary, for sure!
It's said that El Cucuy can shapeshift, so the story goes that he takes on the form of a shadow to sneak into children's rooms at night and hides under their beds while they sleep. If the child has been bad or misbehaved, then El Cucuy would wait until the child had fallen asleep, then abduct them, take them to his lair in the mountains, and eat said child.
Needless to say, I didn't misbehave much as a kid, and I NEVER let my feet or hands dangle off the edge of my bed. El Cucuy is always watching!

The Hermit
A Modern-Day Fairy Tale We all have our dark secrets. Saying you don’t, means that you know how to keep one. Saying you do, is the first step to spilling the tea. Sharing a secret is never a good idea. You cannot even keep your own secret; how can you expect to trust someone else with yours? The best thing is to take them with you into the grave. The second-best thing to do is to confess on your…

It took me so so long to realize The Spiral’s alternate name “Es Mentiras” was supposed to be Latin. Because my Mexican ass just thought, Spanish.
Which didn’t make any sense why only The Spiral has a Spanish name. I was just picturing The Distortian just chilling in Mexico. Or like in a Tejano neighborhood. Personal TMA headcanon that Michael Distorian is El Cucuy
He would absolutely get a piragua with all the colors mixed together.

Notes And Stuff
- 1: I'm not sure if the Flesh Hive should be an alias, imo it's moreso the name of Prentiss' worms as an incarnation of the Corruption?
- 2: the main page for the Corruption lists Saleté as an alternate name for the Filth alias specifically, laid out as "Filth/Saleté". I'm personally confused about this
- 3: I'm not too sure about this one. Its extreme length makes it feel more like part of a monologue than an actual name. Maybe it's supposed to be just "The Great Eye"?
- 4: THE SLAUGHTER DESERVES NAMES. JUSTICE FOR THE SLAUGHTER
