One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Cuckoo's Nest

I listened to them fade away till all I could hear was my memory of the sound.

one flew over the cuckoo's nest (1975) directed by milos forman
"Jesus, I mean, you guys do nothing but complain about how you can't stand it in this place here and you don't have the guts just to walk out? What do you think you are, for Chrissake, crazy or somethin'? Well you're not! You're not! You're no crazier than the average asshole out walkin' around on the streets and that's it."

* * *
The late great Merry Prankster Ken Kesey was born on this day 1935 in La Junta Colorado. Probably best known for is novel “One Flew over The Cuckoo’s Nest,” it was his legendary Acid Test parties down the SF peninsula in La Honda with the house band The Warlocks which he and fellow pranksters hosted after their return from the cross country trip on their dayglo painted school bus called “Furthur” (popularized in Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test), that solidly launched the psychedelic 60s. The Warlocks in short order would change their name to the Grateful Dead...
Ken Kesey on Allen Ginsberg:
“Back in (19)66 or (19)67, we took the bus up to Berkeley for Vietnam Day. The day before the big rally, the Hell’s Angels said they were going to protest Vietnam Day by pounding the shit out of the protestors, and they were serious. Since we kind of knew the Angels, we went over to Oakland, to Sonny Barger‘s house. Ginsberg went with us, right into the lion’s mouth with his little cymbals. Ching, ching ching. And he just kept talking and being his usual absorbing self. Finally they said, “OK, OK, We’re not going to beat up the protesters’. When he left, one of the Angels, Terry the Tramp, says, “That queer little kike ought to ride a bike. From then on, he had a pass around the Angels. They had let all the other Angels know. “He’s a dude worth helping out”. They were absolutely impressed by him and his courage.”

At one time people conveniently ‘went mad’ and were never heard from again. Like a character in a romantic novel. But now... you are too hip to yourself on a psychological level. You are all too intimate with too many of the symptoms of insanity to be caught completely off your guard. Another thing: all of you have a talent for releasing frustration through clever fantasy.

Despite being a rather weak evil spirit, Virulent Strain (as it was first named in supernatural forums) gains advantage through possessing powerless and/or emotionally vulnerable victims, which explains its nickname. Much like a viral disease, it exploits its host’ energy and capacity for transport, slowly taking their body to itself and only leaving when it finds a better victim. Because of Virulent Strain’s unique stealthiness, people almost never realize there is a possession happening. When this happens to espers, though, the spirit’s insatiable hunger for psychic energy can be fatal.
Little is known about its behavior besides that. Some affirm that in the rare occasions it speaks, it does so in a girlish, immature way, ignoring etiquette and social context. It has no compassion and no concern for human issues.
Rumors have said that Virulent Strain is the ghost of the high school student Mako Haraguchi, who was tragically found dead after her disappearance in the mid 80s. However, no one has gathered enough information about the spirit’s human form to comprove this hypothesis. At least, not until now…
