Fox (ignoring him) Senator Stonk released the following statement yesterday that he will be proposing a bill that would have Clone Troopers forage for food on planet to bring down military budget expenses.

Fox (carrying on): when asked to clarify how that would work, Stonk had this to say: Our spending is out of control and we must come up with imaginative solutions. Many of the planets they are sent to have an abundance of flora and fauna. We should have them use the resources available. If they can destroy droids surely they should be able to find food sources.

Cody (blue screen of death face audible even in an audio format): wh..........

Fox: in response to the bill, Master of the Jedi Order Mace Windu had this to say: No.

He then gestured in tired exasperation to Clone Commander CC-411 who explained in great detail the pitfalls of having to feed an army of millions with this method. Windu's initial response has become a reaction 'gram on the holonet that has been shared three billion times and has sparked numerous mocking posts towards the proposed bill on SX (The stream formerly known as space twitter). I'll put the 'gram in the show notes.

Many of the bill's initial supporters loudly insisted they were never going to vote it through if it came up in session. Senator Stonk's press secretary claims that this is all a joke taken out of context and the Senator had no intention to actually propose such a bill.

Wolffe: that's too bad. I like the idea of hunting.

Cody: yes, but to feed your entire battalion?

Wolffe: oh no, I meant the senators. I would hunt them.

Milestone Monday: Democracy Interrupted

On this day in 411 BCE, during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, a political crisis shook the foundations of Athenian democracy. The Athenian Coup, which resulted in the overthrow of Athens' democratic government and led to the establishment of a brief oligarchy known as the Four Hundred. This regime ultimately failed due to widespread discontent among the populace, and by the end of 410 BC, democracy was restored in Athens.

To commemorate this pivotal event in classical history, we are featuring our Limited Editions Club copy of The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. This 1974 edition includes Richard Crawley’s (1840-1893) English translation, revised by R.C. Feetham, with an introduction by Peter Pouncey. It is richly illustrated with eight double-spread, two-color woodcuts and twenty-five black-and-white woodcuts by the Greek artist A. Tassos, including chapter headings, facing page pairs, and a frontispiece. Six maps, specially drawn for this edition by John Morris, provide historical context, while Eugene Ettenberg designed the format. The woodcut inserts were printed in Athens under the artist’s supervision at the Aspioti Elka printing plant, and the text was composed by John Stone in Concord, NH, then printed by Case, Lockwood & Brainard in Bloomfield, CT. This rare volume is a stunning tribute to both the artistry and the enduring legacy of Thucydides' historical account.

Chapter Thirteen: Whispers in the Sand

It had been months since they last saw Jango Fett. Long enough for the barracks to feel… different. Colder, somehow. Emptier, even though they were never truly alone. He was the template of them all, but to Clone Force 99 — he was more than that.

He was a storm cloud.

And the pressure had changed.

“Something’s off.”

Hunter said it first. The four of them were in the barracks, cleaning rifles that wouldn’t be used in real combat for years. Wrecker was on the floor fiddling with a model ship he’d broken and rebuilt five times. Tech was reviewing schematics on a datapad. Crosshair leaned against a bunk, chewing on a toothpick that somehow hadn’t disintegrated from constant use.

Hunter stood near the narrow slit of a window.

“They’re hiding something again,” he said.

“You always say that,” Crosshair muttered.

“Because it’s usually true.”

Wrecker looked up. “You think it’s the kaminoans? Or the regs again? ‘Cause I heard CT-411 say there was a Jedi coming soon!”

Tech blinked. “CT-411 is notorious for exaggeration and base-level paranoia. He once believed the mess hall meat substitute was laced with control chips.”

“He wasn’t totally wrong,” Crosshair said under his breath.

Hunter turned around, expression firm. “I’m not talking about rumors. I felt it.”

Crosshair finally looked up. “…him?”

Hunter nodded.

“Jango’s back,” he said. “I’m sure of it.”

Later that day, they were on the training floor when the announcement came in — quiet, sterile. A visitor had arrived. Two, in fact.

Crosshair looked up sharply from his scope mid-drill. Tech froze in the middle of analyzing a live-feed output. Hunter’s shoulders went rigid.

Wrecker tilted his head. “Do you smell that?”

Hunter did.

Rain.

Oil.

And leather.

“Jango,” Hunter murmured. “And someone else.”

The observation deck above their heads filled with movement. Kaminoans gliding silently. Instructors shifting with more attention than usual. Even the guards were on edge.

Hunter’s gaze flicked upward and locked.

There. Behind the thin-pane glass — Jango Fett stood, armor gleaming, helmet tucked under one arm. The shadow of a boy beside him — Boba, watching with curious sharpness. And next to them, in stark contrast, was a man they’d never seen in person before, but recognized instantly from archive files.

A Jedi.

Tall, robed, calm.

Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Mess Hall, Hours Later

The Batch sat at their usual table. Alone. Again.

The regs gave them wide berth. They always did — especially when whispers about “deviants” were stirred up again. The air was thick with it now. Whatever Jango was doing back, it was causing more than nerves. It was triggering something no one could name.

“He looked at us,” Wrecker said, chewing loudly. “Did you see that? Jango. Looked straight down at us.”

“He always watches us,” Tech replied. “We’re his failed experiment. I imagine it’s hard to look away.”

Crosshair snorted.

Hunter picked at his food but didn’t eat.

“I felt something when that Jedi walked in,” he said quietly. “Like… like when she was around.”

They all stilled.

None of them had said her name in weeks. Not since the supposed execution. Not since they watched her fall from the platform into the endless Kaminoan sea.

Wrecker swallowed hard. “…You think she’s with them?”

“No,” Hunter said quickly. “But… I don’t know. It felt the same. Like something unfinished just walked into the building.”

Tech hesitated. “Statistically, the chance of survival from a chest wound and fall from that height into turbulent sea, while injured, is—”

“I don’t care,” Wrecker said, slamming his tray down. “I felt it too.”

Crosshair chewed slowly. “Even if she lived… why hasn’t she come back?”

Hunter didn’t have an answer.

But his instincts had never lied before.

And they weren’t lying now.

Tipoca City, Kamino – ARC Trooper Staging Hangar

Date: Hours before the Battle of Geonosis

Kamino had never been quiet, not really. But tonight, it felt like the entire planet was holding its breath.

Clones ran drills in double time. Gunships were being prepped on every platform. Orders were barked and obeyed without hesitation. The rain still poured in sheets outside, but it was almost drowned out by the hum of engines and the sharp clatter of boots against steel. This was what they were born for. The war was no longer a theory.

It was here.

It had a name.

Geonosis.

Clone Force 99 stood just outside the hangar bay, watching the surge of movement.

“I don’t like this,” Hunter said, arms crossed. “They’re loading everyone.”

“Everyone but us,” Crosshair said, tone acidic.

Wrecker stared at the gunships, fists clenching and unclenching. “We could help. We should help.”

Tech adjusted his goggles. “Our deployment restriction is a Kaminoan directive. We are still considered… non-standard.”

“We’ve trained for this,” Wrecker growled. “Harder than most of them!”

“And some of them are going to die tonight,” Crosshair added flatly.

Hunter didn’t say anything for a moment. The weight of it sat on his shoulders like wet stone. “We’re being benched,” he finally muttered. “Because the brass doesn’t trust us.”

They were still just kids. Physically in their teens now, mentally sharper than most soldiers—but not politically valuable. Not standard. And despite all their victories in simulations, their records, their potential…

They were still the “defectives.”

Still expendable in the way that made Kaminoan logic feel like a slow-cutting knife.

They weren’t alone for long.

Delta Squad came striding toward them. Fully armored, prepped, blasters checked and charged. Scorch grinned as he walked.

“Well, well, look who’s still locked in the toy chest.”

Fixer gave him a sharp elbow. “Not the time.”

Sev gave Clone Force 99 a look—somewhere between sympathy and challenge. “You’re not coming?”

“No,” Hunter said. “Orders.”

Scorch gave a low whistle. “Sucks to be the freaks, huh?”

Wrecker looked like he was about to throw him across the hangar.

Boss stepped forward before things escalated. “We’ll handle it. You’ll get your chance.”

“You better,” Fixer added. “Because if this thing’s half as bad as they say, we’ll need every soldier we’ve got.”

Tech gave a single nod. “We’ll be watching. Tactically speaking, Geonosis is an ideal test ground for Separatist tech.”

“Cheerful as always,” Sev muttered.

Boss turned to Hunter and offered a gloved hand. “Stay sharp. Don’t get rusty while we’re off saving the Republic.”

Hunter shook it once, firm. “Don’t die.”

Wrecker gave Scorch a nod, strangely sincere. “If you blow something big up, dedicate it to me.”

Scorch grinned. “You got it, big guy.”

Then they were off. Marching into the belly of a waiting LAAT, weapons ready, helmets sliding into place. The engines roared. The doors closed.

Delta Squad was gone.

Clone Force 99 watched the gunships disappear into the night.

One by one.

Hunter stared after them, jaw tight. “We should be out there.”

Crosshair didn’t say anything. Just chewed on his toothpick and leaned against the bulkhead.

“I hate this,” Wrecker said. “I hate waiting. I hate not fighting.”

Tech’s fingers danced anxiously over the datapad strapped to his gauntlet. “Command believes we are not yet fully tested in a live environment. I suspect they fear… chaos.”

Hunter scoffed. “We’re built for chaos.”

There was silence after that. Thick. Tense.

Then, from behind them, a Kaminoan voice—detached, clinical:

“You are to remain in the barracks until further notice. Your squad is not cleared for deployment.”

It was all the permission they didn’t need.

They returned to the barracks in silence.

No one said it aloud, but the implication rang in their minds:

They were not to be trusted with war.

Not yet.

Not ever?

And worse—worse than anything—

Jango Fett had vanished from Kamino.

And rumors had already started. That the Jedi had encountered him on Coruscant. That he was working with Count Dooku. That he’d betrayed the Republic. Betrayed them.

Crosshair was the one to break the silence.

“You think he really did it?” he asked from his bunk, legs hanging over the edge.

Hunter didn’t answer right away. Then: “I think he never told us who he was.”

Wrecker looked up from the corner where he’d been hugging his knees. “You think she knew?”

The room got quiet again.

Tech looked over. “She would have told us. If she hadn’t been—”

He stopped.

They all stopped.

Hunter exhaled. “Whatever’s going on out there… it’s bigger than we were told.”

They didn’t sleep that night.

None of them did.

And the war began without them.

during the final battle against Ma Xianhong at the end of Biyou Village arc, Wang Ye explains that the cost of manipulating time is to "burn up his own life force":

and the backlash is immediate (see also manhua ch. 296).

then, soon thereafter, we get more and more evidence that WY's physical body might be starting to deteriorate.

in the donghua adaptation (s5, ep. 11) of manhua ch. 305, the animators added in a shot of WY's bloodied toothbrush:

and after WY's first fight against Chen Jinkui (manhua chs. 374-378), we see the beginning of his strange symptomatology.

he gets a rash, that then disappears right before the doctor's eyes when he goes to the hospital.

upon returning briefly to Wudang (manhua ch. 404), his grandmaster notices as well.

then, when CJK attacks him again (manhua chs. 411-412), WY spits blood and starts bleeding from his nose...

...which ultimately results in him passing out.

and when WY wakes up on the remote island that CJK whisked him away to (manhua ch. 413), CJK tells him that he had a doctor friend run a bunch of tests on WY. except... the results were always very bizarre. he could test positive and be diagnosed with any number of things—and then immediately be perfectly healthy when they ran the tests again.

in short, something very strange is happening to WY's body.

(we learn he passes out again while escaping the island in manhua ch. 512 as well.)

but the kicker comes in manhua ch. 541, when we see WY holding some CT scans of what seem to be his own lungs.

it's different this time. despite trying two different hospitals and doctors, the results are the same. WY's symptoms are that of lung cancer.

that, finally, brings us to the most recent chapters (ch. 675)... where many cnetz have commented that WY looks exceptionally worn-out.

i'm not sure what the conclusion of this will be, though this cnetz here has some very cool theories. undoubtedly, though, using Feng-hou Qimen is negatively affecting WY's health.

so all i can say is... i really hope WY doesn't die.

Toxoplasmosis is an infection involving the central nervous system. Until quite recently, it was considered to be a very rare disease. Now, however, the infection is more common, and is seen as a rather frequent cause of encephalitis, particularly among AIDS patients. The infection itself is caused by an obligate intracellular protozoan called Toxoplasma gondii (Caffazana, et al., 292). This protozoan has a worldwide distribution. In those that have AIDS, it causes encephalitis and neurological symptoms. Among the symptoms that should be looked for and are usually present are headaches that are nonpulsating, severe, and usually in both sections of the front of the head (Caffazana, et al., 295). These headaches caused by the disease are not relieved, as most normal headaches would be, by taking over-the-counter headache remedies such as analgesics. Having the headache pain in the front of the head does not reflect T. gondii lesions, but rather an increase in the intracranial pressure of the patient (Caffazana, et al., 296). It is possible that seizures will also accompany infection, although research shows that this is not as likely as would have been previously expected. Much of this comes from patients being placed on anticonvulsant medication as a precaution (Caffazana, et al., 298). For those patients that come to their doctor only once the disease has progressed significantly, or for those that have a relapse, however, seizures are not uncommon. In addition to these seizures, symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders can be seen, as well as inattention, changes in personality, confusion, and lethargy (Caffazana, et al., 299). Patients with AIDS can die from this disease, especially since their immune systems are already compromised and they are not able to fight off this type of infection as easily as others would be able to. The most common means of transmission of T. gondii to humans include the eating of infected meat that is not properly cooked, and contact with felines (Snider, et al., 405). This is especially true of contract with feline feces, such as when changing a litter box for a house cat. Studies have indicated that, within the AIDS patient population in New York City, three percent have the disease (Snider, et al., 408). This may not seem like an alarming number, but since the disease was considered very rare until recently, the findings are significant. To diagnose toxoplasmosis in the AIDS patient, the most common diagnostic tool is CT scanning (Snider, et al., 411). Most patients have ring or nodular lesions that can be seen on this type of scan, and they often have edema as well. Another useful tool for diagnosis is toxoplasma serology (Snider, et al., 412). Most of the patients that have the disease are seropositive for the IgG antibody (Snider, et al., 412). A CSF analysis, electroencephalography, and a biopsy of the brain can also be used as ways to diagnosis toxoplasmosis. However, taking a brain biopsy can be dangerous, and morbidity rates for AIDS patients hover around 10% (Snider, et al., 414). For this reason, a biopsy of the brain should only be done as a last resort for diagnosis. For treatment of the problem, many patients are given medications such as pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine, usually in combination (Leport, et al., 95). Also suggested is AZT, which has been a common drug to reduce infection risk in AIDS patients, Clindamycin, and corticosteriods (Leport, et al., 98). The use of these, however, remains controversial because of the side effects they have. Pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine usually allows for improvement within days and a complete recovery within a month (Leport, et al., 98). As long as these medications are taken properly and not discontinued once the patient begins to feel better, side effects are generally mild and the risk of a relapse in usually very low. To help prevent the disease, those that have AIDS should not change feline litter, use extra care if they have cats in their home, and should not eat meat that has not been properly and thoroughly cooked, in order to help reduce their chances of getting this particular infection (Leport, et al., 99).
