When was Grissom's Overture "officially released"? Did people know that what they would hear in later episodes like 1x09 and 1x14 were parts of the same song from 1x05? Or were the audience kept from making that connection until some time later?

Also, if John never published his music, how do people have access to them (I mean the ones who put them on YouTube and SouncCloud)?

the csi: crime scene investigation - the soundtrack album was officially released for the first time in 2002 (i.e., when s2 of the show was airing). as far as i know, that was the first time "grissom's overture" was released as a full track for public consumption.

which means that most folks who heard the track on the show back in 2000/2001 did not know what it was or that it had been used in parts and pieces in various episodes.

the album is the only place where john m. keane ever officially released any of his ost tracks from csi, and the only two tracks he did released were "investigation suite" and "grissom's overture."

i'm not familiar with what other tracks people may have up on youtube or soundcloud, so i can't really speak to where they may have gotten the tracks if not from the album, except to generally handwave toward "piracy."

my guess is that they just recorded them straight off of the episodes and then maybe cleaned them up a bit with audio editing software, as necessary.

i do know that back in the day, someone recorded the "gsr love theme" from episode 09x10 "one to go" and uploaded it to the internet, but it still had the sound effects (i.e., chirping birds and insects, the flash sounds from sara's camera) embedded in the music. as far as i am aware, there has never been a clean version of that particular track released anywhere, unfortunately.

Griffith Park’s Merry-Go-Round

The Merry-Go-Round was constructed in 1926 in San Diego and was moved into Griffith Park in 1937 by the Davis Family. The carousel contains 68 lavishly decorated horses and is the only remaining four-abreast carousel from the Spillman Engineering Company in the world. At the center of the merry-go-round is a Stinson 165 Military Band Organ with a repertoire of over 1500 songs. It was at this carousel where Walt Disney first thought up the idea of Disneyland while watching his daughters ride.

The merry-go-round can be seen above in Castle, Alias, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie & series, and MacGyver.

How old were you when you first realized you liked guys getting hurt?: I can’t really remember but maybe about 7 or so? But i never knew whump was a thing till later on.

What was that very first scene you remember that gave you those glorious butterfly feelings?: Hmmm, even this i don’t really know. I have very bad memory but i think it was me watching CSI? Greg Sanders was so whumpable haha. Oh maybe when Edmund get’s stabbed in Narnia.

When and how was it that you realized “Hey, I’m not so messed up in the head!” and that there’s a definition and community: I think I found this community when i was google searching for some specific whump. like ‘episodes where “insert name” gets hurt (hahahahahaah) and then one of the results was some tumblr blog and I got sucked in. I found so many amazing people. I think this was late 2014?

What’s your favorite whump trope?: oh damn, I love love love the getting hurt and not telling anyone about it. Like they’re in danger or something and they don’t want to inconvenience anyone so they hide their injury until it’s too late and I honestly love it when it’s a doctor getting whumped? Like either by a crazy patient or just outside of work? Idk if this makes me weird. Like they’re always the one’s helping people but to see them hurt is just something else to me. 

What’s a whump trope that you hate?: When they totally skip all the aftercare (ahem* like that one chicago fire episode*) Like why must I be denied these amazing things? Don’t tell me that person just magically got better.

Who’s your favorite whumped character?: So many! Matt Casey, Dr. John Carter, Martin Riggs (but this poor guy though, I cry almost every other ep) , Barry Allen, Stiles Stilinski, Oliver Queen, Mon-El <3, Karev, Greg Sanders, Ryan Wolfe, Wyatt Logan, Derek Hale, Jim Kirk to name a few. *Jem Carstairs and Fang are my two fav book whump characters. :D *

What’s that whumped scene(s) that you’ve watched over and over again. (We know you do it and we understand):

Injured and asks for help or tries to cover it up?: Ooo. I’d say cover it up because when the other person finds out and fusses over them it’s so amazing. 

Lastly, does anyone know about this addiction of yours?: Not fully. ahahaha I’ve mentioned it but not in detail to some people before but I think they’re on to me.

“Shades of Justice,” a CSI: Miami Rewatch: Episode 14

1x14- “Forced Entry”

CASE:  A man is tied to his bed, sodomized, and finally killed. Horatio and Speedle try to find the culprit. Meanwhile, Calleigh and Delko investigate multiple murders at a crematorium. You know, sometimes I wonder how I manage to eat while watching episodes like this. Between the literal pile of dead bodies, microwaving a severed hand, and violent assault, there’s plenty to unsettle your stomach. Even so, the stories themselves make for another decent episode of CSI: Miami. The Thomas Carpenter case brings up a moral dilemma that I actually find really fascinating. To what extent do people like Carpenter deserve justice? He raped and robbed multiple people. Should Horatio and Speed really be trying to help him by catching his murderer? This question comes up quite frequently in shows of this type, and I’m typically glad when it does. It’s nice to see the show at least try to make things a bit murkier than the typical black and white. As for me, I’m of the belief that murder is almost always morally wrong, unless it unquestionably in self-defense. Leonard Murphy may have had a righteous motive, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be punished. After all, there’s a very old saying about this. “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” I really wish the writers had thematically linked these cases by having Calleigh and Delko face the same question during their investigation. Benito Ramon might not have been the greatest person in the world, but he’s no Thomas Carpenter. The case ends up being more about Michelle Carter’s death, anyway. The theme of revenge does run through both cases, but I think the morality angle would have been more interesting. The only piece of evidence that didn’t sit quite right with me was when Calleigh and Delko take the lack of evidence on the first two rings as proof that the club owners didn’t kill Michelle. Surely the matching pattern on her face is enough to keep them in the running as suspects. It usually is on these shows. The discovery of the third ring does make that a little less problematic.

CHARACTER: “You might be a lawyer, but I’m a CSI. A damn good one.” Yeah, you are, Calleigh! That’s my girl! She’s so badass. I love how she never lets anyone intimidate her. Also, we find out she has a tattoo! Speedle’s comment about how she doesn’t want to show it to anyone and her squeamishness when Alexx microwaves the hand is all so adorable. I’m also really glad that we’re sticking with these new pairings, because Calleigh and Delko are so great together. I think that’s about it. There isn’t that much important character work in this episode. I suppose I could mention that we’ve been seeing some new techs helping out around that lab these past few episodes. Most notably Valera a couple episodes back. She’s the only one who ever gets significant development, so there’s not a lot to say.

CRAFT: This episode was written by Mark Israel and Lois Johnson. It was directed by Artie Mandelburg. The writing is okay, but we’ll definitely see better. I have to hand it to Mandelburg, though. This episode looks very nice. It helps that the set design and art direction for Club Canvas is super cool!

GRADE: B-

This episode is certainly watchable. But missed opportunities and the fact that revenge stories aren’t my favorite kept it from getting a higher grade. Next up is “Dead Woman Walking.”
