I promise there's more folk punk recs coming, I swear. I've got a lot going on like trying to get ready for our busking tour in DC/NYC in about a week, so packing and prepping for rough living is a slight priority.
But I'm still seeing people talk about folk punk like it's only AJJ, Days n Daze, and Pat the Bunny's assorted projects. And like don't get me wrong I love those, but there's so much more than that out there and like I like Je-C as much as the next guy but there's so much more out there. So here's a non-exhaustive list of bands I plan to gush about in more detail in the future, if your playlist needs a dose of stuff that's not the same three bands I see tumblr talk about. Think of it as a bit of joy in this trying time.<3
As usual, some of these are folks I know personally, others I'm a couple degrees removed from, and others I just think y'all need to know about. Everyone's on Spotify unless I specifically say they're not.
Blossomin' Bone: Probably some of my best friends. They've got a new album coming but Wild Mosey is my favorite song of theirs, but they're all amazing.
Swamp Rats: Andie's banjo playing is to die for, if I'm ever half as good as her I'll know I've made it. Whiskey and Weed is on repeat a lot. Their dog is cute and I love her.
Little Foot: every time I go see a show of his, I cry. He's even got a button that he sells at shows that says "I cried at the little foot show." Growing Up Is Giving Up is my life motto.
Rambler Kane: A little more country-ish and folksy than some of the other bands here, Pat (not that one) is like the sweetest guy. Pride Before the Fall will sell him I promise.
Rail Yard Ghosts: a little crusty, a little witchy, and also great people according to my buddy who's hopped trains with some of em. Burning Down the Landlord's House is a banger.
Spider Bucket: Met them at a show at the punk house, then went to their fest up in NC. Raining Iguanas is a beautiful love song to the great state of Florida.
X Dirty Fingers: Poignant songs about being crushed by society, and with an amazing voice to boot. I've probably met them but don't remember. Third Shift Love Song is super good.
Chad Hates George: Do you like Days n Daze? Do you wish there was more of them but acoustic? Good news, cause Je-C has another band with his sister, and this is it. Shooting Up Breaking Down is the first song I learned on ukulele.
Escape from the Zoo: Do you like Days n Daze? Do you wish there was more of them but more ska-punk? Good news, this is yet another Jesse Sendejas outfit. Twelve Rounds is my favorite, and the first song I got punched in a pit to.
Matt Rivers: Sings a lot of anti-corpo and union songs. He's a friend of a friend, and I'm told he's a cool guy. Shame on Shaw is a song about the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. It doesn't pull any punches.
Of course this list is non-exhaustive, so stay tuned cause I will have full write-ups about these folks eventually and there's even more to come.
Love y'all, and up the punx
#folk punk#florida folk#music recs#ash reccomends#punk rock#up the punx#no hate to pat the bunny or dnd but like its all i ever see for folk punk here#actually hate to pat cuz he said he didnt believe in what he sang about#there's just so much out there in the genre and i never see anyone talk about it#so im doing it

Crust Punk Scene
Thinking back to my days as a crust punk
It was cans everyday before I smoked skunk
Looking back can’t imagine what she thought, mum
I smoked, screamed, pierced myself and battered drums
All my mates over all the time doing what they couldn’t
At home, always people explored shadows they normally wouldn’t
Around me, in this sense I am satan’s sudden student
Said don’t need no education but I’m not the type to bunk
In Ireland we call it mitching, tell you true I never played truant
That game I never played through it, I did do it though
Leaving school, true to my word there, they’re all fools
Drooling on desks, whole thing an out of control April Fool
I rue a man to put a rule on me, do one man, judge ruling on me
Midway through fifth year I elected to leave, selected my reprieve and none could refuse me
I worked in my dad’s while my mates went to school, few quid for the pocket, mostly for booze
The rest I spent on looking punk as fuck, bulletbelts getting delivered bulk
I had more anger in me, and more rips in my clothes, than incredible Hulk
Carry No Banners from Galway became Cut The Reins, went Galway a lot
Lovely spot but cut the rains
At the Spanish Arch drinking cans all day
They call this place ambition’s grave
Nightlife to rave about, suddenly you’re fifty and never got out
Use the old sessioners as a lesson on what not to be, less than pensioners but close
These licentionnaires with greying hair at college parties plying wares
Only kiss they get result of double dares.
Spent plenty hard cash perfecting my look
Moon in Leo outlook, out with the old room for my new look
Never out unless looking good, flooded with looks my bulk
Onlookers audibly say fuckkkkkkk, like The Wire’s Bunk
I only cared about being the punkest punk, no giving fucks
More binfrequenting than local fox
Some shouldn’thavesent in sentbox.
Everyday in full costume like an habitual monk
The way you do when you’re young
I wrote punk’s dead in marker on my sleeveless parka shirt from army surplus
I had a navy nike hat with an immortal patch on, buckle had rust
Never saw it again when I left it on a Greyhound Galwaybound GoBus
Frayed with wearing, greyed with caring, grade unerring it was my A hat
I had studs and metal bits glued onto all my jackets
Nothing flair lacking
Nothing’s fair that age
Started using red dax wax to sculpt my hair into liberty spikes
Until my top tips signalled to the rising moon like IRA pikes
No rules except what to think, wear, listen to and how to act
Didn’t realise I was signing a pact, I’m listening to Filthpact
Crusties barely wash after enacting the No Showers Act of 10 years back
Their baggy clothes are filth packed
Like wallowing pigs they’re filth backed
At crust gigs no pints are sold
It’s bold but might get one water to pour in a six pack
Posh father daughters playing at homeless, LATFO lmao
Caught between a rock and NWOBHM, more piss smell than OTO
Bake sale
Pit hair like lichens sprouting my cut off Amebix merchandise
Dreads dirt-caked, Latvian army boots in bad shape, looking like piltdown man
They shout crust as fuck existence in can-strewn Cabra kitchens
They form bands called Nuclear Axe Wound or Mandatory Deexistence
No distance between bands, scene is small and incestuous
Every second punk kid here attended Wesley, half played rugby
Dad’s in the ministry like Weasleys, but they’re punx see
Purposely didn’t take their pocket money, funds beneath their dignity
Rather play for beers, be dirty and have nits, playing on the streets
Dirty knees kid calls himself a magpie, watches train hopping documentaries
A total crock those demo tracks you sent to me, 4 track ra-punk
Shit be the scent of me, all kak perfume, two birds and eighty blokes per show
Lops off locks and let grease wind dreadlocks, acquire shocking forehead stick and pokes
Squat the world, he jokes, his dad’s place is on millionaire’s row
Fucked up at the front of the show, milling elbows
Dreadlocks like a dingleberry lasso
Buckfast purple lips and unwashed teeth on show
Your uncle has a spare rolex, everything gold like butter
Your patch says train robber, another says cradle2gutter
You all absolutely deserve each other.
Hanging around the closest we have to train tracks
Pretending you’re leatherclad raiders outta Mad Max
Spent my inheritance on cans, family won’t see me again
Until I’m in dire need of a lend, I also attend Christmas and holidays
Driving mammy around the bend, arrived for Thanksgiving dressed like a Fallout raider
They have saved up but secluded my money until I grow up, few years finding myself
Finally settle into a position at Dad’s firm, dad’s firm on this decision, I’m binding myself
To his millions.
Yes me boys that’s me gone, striking out west goodbye Muirsin Durkin.

hey! just trying to give some friendly tips for ur pants, the floofy crust is such a cute idea but in reality it’s gonna turn real nasty real quick. that fabric just ain’t built for what you’re trying to put it thru and it’ll likely start matting/falling apart. my suggestion would be to just find a slightly baggy pair of pants to make ur crusties and just wear ur pjs under that, personally that’s what i do when it gets cold. real punx stay comfy & practical
Im aware lol! As it falls apart ill add new bits of fabric to it ^^ it hasn't ever had matting problems over like the 3 years ive worn them so i think that part'll be fine but if not so I'll just keep adding old fabric ^^ they actually fit baggy on me bc i am all bones, my thighs are mearly runoff ass qwp
Also update on the pants ^^ skeleton from a shirt so i can make boner jokes lol

Salut là dedans,
On espère que tout le monde va bien.
De notre côté, on se fait discret sur les réseaux, mais croyez nous, c'est pour le meilleur.
L'an passé, nous sortions un single et une nouvelle vidéo : The call of the storm.

Hey Punx and Crustys
We hope that all of you are fine.
We've been keeping a low profile on the networks lately, but believe us, it's for the best.
Last year, we released a single and this video : The call of the storm Check the link above.
Nowadays, we are still working on our new album composed of 12 new songs.
We start to write the lyrics so we hope to be ready to record it at the end of 2024 or at early 2025.
Take care.

My message as a crusty and incredibly poor witch:
You don't have to buy all that stuff! You don't need three different books to keep witch notes in! Your altar doesn't need all the fancy trimmings from the metaphysical store I promise!
I know that's like, a no brainer and most witchy pages and resources will tell you that, but it bears repeating cause I keep seeing "witchcraft shopping hauls" from new witches and it makes me wanna gag, it serves so much capitalism I hate it. So I'm gonna give my two cents on having an affordable and sustainable practice. Today's post will be about magical notebooks, and I'll probably write other posts about things like spell ingredients and tools, and I definitely wanna do a whole one about witchcraft books. Content warning, I explicitly advocate theft among other things.
I have an incredibly loosey-goosey practice, it's 100% vibes based most of the time and 80% when it's not. I keep a journal and it's full of songs I've written, correspondences and spells I'm workshopping (love going back and taking notes on how it worked out), tarot readings, adventures I've had, stories I've written, photos and drawings and stuff (my favorite is my staff badge from when I sold fireworks). It's very personal and goes everywhere with me, so it's full of my own energy. My journals are hardcover sketch journals I liberate from the local big box, but they can be anything you write in, or even a note document on your phone (though it's hard to press a cool leaf in your phone). I actually think it's incredibly important to meld your mundane and magical journaling, because it emphasizes that one's practice isn't just a Thing You Do Sometimes, it's a way of living and interacting with the world.
Whenever I remember, I go and put my spells, correspondences, and tarot spreads I feel I've got a good grasp of in a second journal that lives on my shelf. Its purpose is a reference, as opposed to the journalistic nature of my, well, journals. This one was a gift from a friend, a beautiful handmade tome with heavy paper, but again it can be anything you can store writings in; if I didn't have it I'd probably just steal another sketchbook. I write in this one with a quill I found at an antique shop (tips are cheap enough online or steal em from Hobby Lobby, I always advocate theft from corporations) and ink I make from blackberries I forage (storebought is fine, of course, and alum is in the spice aisle of the grocery). That's where my spells live once I feel like I've ironed them out well. I probably do this about once a month, I try to do it during the New Moon, as it has correspondences of creativity and new things, but sometimes it's just when I remember.
You don't gotta buy special journals for stuff, it doesn't have to be a fancy handcrafted leather-bound ordeal, you don't have to have separate books for your mundane and magical musings (everything is magical once you open your eyes to it). It's your practice and as long as you're doing things with intention and respect to the natural world, as long as you're learning about the world around you and appreciating magic in all its forms, you're doing it right.
Blessed be and up the punx, y'all~
