I am running a new Yunomi and Tea bowl workshop At Crown Works Pottery in London On Sat 20th & Sun 21st Nov 2021 This will be a fantastic weekend of Yunomi/ Tea bowl making. The workshop will focus on a range of making techniques that can be used to make decorative tea bowls. There will be an introduction to tea bowl forms and then I will take you through the technical aspects of throwing Teabowls, creating foot rings, different ways to approach slip decoration, Kurinuki carving and hakeme brush decorating. We will also be providing teas for you to drink whilst you make! This course is aimed at intermediate throwers, to do this course you need to be able to throw basic cylinders competently to specific heights and thicknesses. Ringwaldt Customs Part 1 Arcadia

I found a great group of questions I’ll be answering for each of the nations of Ringwaldt in time about there cultures and customs. Some of the questions are related to the general setting and I will be answering for each individual nation.

Questions

Does the weather or climate contribute any habits or customs, such as the mid-afternoon siesta in hot countries?

What is considered a normal family unit? How extended is an extended family? How important are family connections and responsibilities?

What are the rites of passage in this culture? Are they formalized rituals, such as being dubbed a knight, or are they informal? Are they different for men and women? For nobility and peasants?

What customs surround a birth and the introduction of a new child to the family? Is the mother sequestered for some period? Is the child? Is there a formal presentation of the new child to parents, grandparents, overlord, priest? Is a feast and celebration declared, or does everyone keep a low profile to keep from attracting demons or bad luck?

Who is normally present for births? Is it strictly a matter for women, or are men involved, or is the only woman present the expectant mother?

Who raises the children? At what age do they begin to be educated or trained? By whom? Are they considered mini-adults? Do they dress differently from adults? If so, when do they change to adult dress?

What customs surround death and burial? Is there a special class of people (doctors, priests, funeral directors, untouchables) who deal with dead bodies? What things must be done and why (burn hair to free spirit, burn body to prevent necromancy, coins on eyes for ferryman, etc.)? Are the dead feared, revered, or ignored?

What personal weapons are available to anyone who can afford them? Are some considered “for nobles only” either by custom or by law? Are there laws forbidding certain classes from being armed at all?

Answers

In Arcadia along the eastern coast it is common to take a rest mid morning for some Tea or Black Brew.

A normal family unit would be the pair of significant others along with any children they have; averaging around 3 to 6 individuals.  An extended family will include up to second cousins.  Close family connections are deeply valued especially for children of mages.

A common rite of adulthood is a pseudo-tournament between a group of boys or girls all born within 6 months of one another in the local region.  This tournament could be fighting, weaving or even magic and is used to demonstrate talent for  guilds.  Being dubbed a Knight requires a mage from the Crownworks Academy, and a Baron.  Nobles, instead of having the competition, have the child perform the task for a crowd of adult nobles, and/or suitors.

A newborn child is handled by a midwife or cleric until the baby needs to feed. The mother is sequestered with the child and a support team for as little as 6 hours and up to 60 days.

 The father is allowed to attend but outside of him, and/or a priest/doctor it is expected that no men will attend.  Though this custom is waning

Parents raise the child and provide education; if they show magical aptitude they can be offered a position at the Crownworks Academy for education.  Children wear loose fitting easy to clean clothes which they change out of  after their pseudo-tournament.  Parents can anytime between 6 and 14 search for a tutor or mentor for a child.

Arcadian policy is to bury a body with an electrum coin for luck.  Usually priests, doctors and their help handle the bodies transportation.  When buried one’s family will either pay for a tombstone.

Swords and Spears are readily available as are pistols.  Nobles have more ready access to higher quality versions and magical versions and have the most ready access to the crossbow.

‘Parked’ in the middle of Floriana’s 17th century Crownwork fortifications is this very small chapel built with a classic architecture. Hardly ever used after its construction, it sits sandwiched between containers and a line of parked public transport buses. DID YOU KNOW? Don’t be fooled by its classic looks. Would you have ever thought that this pretty chapel owes its existence to a group of students practicing masonry construction? And even more surprising is that this chapel was built less than fifty years ago, in the 1970s. The student masons who built it attended the nearby Gilormu Cassar Trade School at Hornworks fortifications. This school, headed by Mr. Paul Cassar, shut down less than twenty years ago, right after the turn of the century. WHERE IS THE CHAPEL FOUND? The chapel is found at Crownwork fortifications, on the eastern part of the Floriana Lines. The Floriana Lines are a line of fortifications in Floriana which surround the fortifications of Valletta and form the capital city's outer defences. This part of the Floriana Lines is today a parking lot for public transport buses, just beside another parking lot - the Park & Ride parking ground. The area is accessed through an uphill ramp that leads to the Park & Ride, opposite to where the old Licensing Department used to be. THE FLORIANA LINES Construction of the Floriana Lines began in 1636. They got their name from the military engineer who designed them, Pietro Paolo Floriani. The Floriana Lines were modified throughout the course of the 17th and 18th centuries. They saw use during the French blockade of 1798–1800. The Floriana Lines are considered to be among the most complicated and elaborate of the Hospitaller fortifications of Malta. Today, the fortifications are still largely intact but rather dilapidated and in need of restoration. WHAT IS THE PARK & RIDE?
