TODAY IN HISTORY
Tumblr media
24 March 1603
Queen Elizabeth I passed away at the age of 69.
She had ruled England for 44 years and brought stability to the Empire after the tenuous rules of her siblings.
Her health unfortunately deteriorated after the deaths of several close friends.
Upon her death, she was placed in Westminster Abbey in a tomb shared with her half sister, Mary I.
Tumblr media
24 March 1199
King Richard the Lionheart of England was wounded by a crossbow bolt at the Siege of Châlus Chabrol in France.
Despite thinking that it was a minor injury, the wound became infected and led to gangrene.
Richard succumbed to this wound and died on 6 April 1199. He was then succeeded by his brother, John.
Tumblr media
24 March 1944
Over 75 Allied prisoners escaped from a POW camp in Sagan, Germany.
Despite the camp's high security, prisoners managed to dig three tunnels leading beyond the camp’s perimeter and named them Tom, Dick, and Harry.
Harry was the tunnel eventually used for the escape.
Of the escapees, 73 were recaptured and Hitler ordered 50 to be executed.
This escape attempt inspired the 1963 movie "The Great Escape," starring Steve McQueen.

Ohhhhhh we are back to bitch about terminology in a book again. I'm on Chapter 22 of Onyx Storm, and Yarros has just thrown "cross-bolt" in our faces. The description in the book is as follows:
Tairn looked pointedly toward a long stone wall a quarter of the way up the first hill, armed with a dozen of the largest cross-bolts I've ever seen, all loaded with shining, metallic tips.
So uh...
Cross-bolt is not a word. Crossbow is a word. Bolt is a word. The phrase crossbow bolt is pretty common. And here's the thing. I'm an English major. I am aware of and often LIKE figurative language, epithets, and imagery. But in this specific case? You're confusing your readers, Rebecca. The description is literally describing the shafts of oversized crossbow bolts with metallic tips. What the context suggests is that she is describing is the giant-ass crossbows that can hold metal-tipped bolts big enough to take down a dragon.
Part of writing is knowing when NOT to use figurative language to describe something because it stops making sense. We have swords and daggers and stuff, why are we obfuscating the fact that we have giant-ass wall-mounted crossbows and the bolts are presumably wood with metal tips!?!?!?! There is zero reason to do this and you've descended into figurative language that confuses rather than clarifies.

Btw martial arts of any kind are incredibly hot and usually very close and up and touchy and what im getting at is that durgetash 1000% took pleasure in sparing matches.
Both as recreational exercise and, well, literally.
Also using a Crossbow does not dequalify you from getting up close nd personal. They need ages to reload and just use darkness or fog or something nd he can't see shit anyway. All Durge needs now is any kind of close combat weapon. Or none. The world of martial arts is a vast one (and all of them are sexy).

If you’re diving into archery or hunting, silver crossbow bolts are the game-changer you didn’t know you needed. Not only do they look sleek, they pack a punch against supernatural foes—especially those pesky vampires.
Crafting these bolts requires some serious skills and resources, starting with melting silver bars and finishing with attaching feathers for that extra oomph. And let's be real, they aren't just effective; their shiny aesthetic makes them a favorite among collectors too.
So, whether you're looking to slay some mythical beasts or just want to level up your collection, silver crossbow bolts are a must-have. Curious about the crafting process and market trends? Join www.SilverWars.com.

[For Syringe] — He was out doing some shopping in Crossroads, sticking out easily from their Blackrockian attire. They were looking around the stores but never heading fully into one, the demon looking puzzled.
-> @wrenches-and-wires
-> The support phighter was out and about as well, hunched over slightly to make himself appear smaller. He had taken notice of the Blackrockian, keeping his distance from the other and trying not to bring attention to himself. -> Blackrock scared him.

What do you think Drebber was feeling the moment he pulled the trigger on his crossbow.
Do you think he felt enthralled, the happiest he’d been in years? Do you think he pulled the trigger with a poorly concealed grin on his face? Was he excited for it all day? Smiling to himself for reasons no one could ever guess?
Do you think he was angry? Do you think he channeled ten years of hatred into the crossbow bolt that set his plans in motion? Or do you think it was a quiet rage that had simmered in him for years? It isn’t easy to carry an intense hate in you for that long, so maybe this plan renewed it in him.
Do you think he was nervous? There was a large crowd after all. Someone could have seen him and started a panic, or he could have miscalculated something and gotten a bystander hurt. He was already past the point of no return, which meant he had no choice but to do it. Not that that thought would have made it easier.
Maybe he didn’t feel anything at all. Maybe he was just going through the motions of his plan. I wouldn’t be surprised. Pain and joy and nervousness could all get in the way. He had hurt so much in his life it could have simply been easier to box it away for a later date.

Bashasha is a great character. Damn. He's kind he's a great leader he's affable he's steel he's loved and he's very smart he's energetic he's got humour he's committed to whatever he can manage to do
He's also so self-controlled but I think that's grief. And a certain kind of grief that has had time to be shaped by a persistent sense of helplessness and fury and then he got pushed over the edge when he lost his sister. He is truly operating under 'there is nothing more to lose' mindset. I understand that deeply

Need there to be a tag on Ao3 that means 'the violence is canon typical but the injuries are realistic'
Like yeah Korra will toss a rock at you but you will get the internal bleeding the cartoon doesn't show you. Your ribs will be broken.

can u help me understand the archer? what does she mean by cause cruelty wins in the movies? and by i've been teh archer ive been the prey?
so, the core idea of the archer— or at least, the way the core idea is explored— is taylor being a sagittarius (their symbol is the archer). sagittariuses are known for being friendly and exciting and well liked by everyone they meet, but incredibly hard to get close to due to their tendency to run to the next thing at the drop of a hat. so that’s the core conflict of the archer— i run when things get hard, i’m trying to stay, help me hold on to you
“cruelty wins in the movies” is an expression of her fear of being left. in stories that remind her of her own life, cruelty wins, the couple breaks up, all of her heroes died all alone. any example she looks to, trying calm her fears, reinforces her sense of inevitable doom.
“i’ve been the archer, i’ve been the prey” literally means “i have hurt people, i have been hurt”. adding in the sagittarius context, you get a “i’ve left people behind, ive been the one left behind.” in context of the rest of the song, the subtext is she hurts people because of her fear of being hurt, but the line itself assigns them equal value. the people i’ve hurt and the ways i’ve been hurt are both parts of me, and both weigh just as heavy on my soul

Randomly started thinkin' about httyd & dc crossover
Where the batfam are like a cross between Valka was and night fury
Y'know, all mysterious cryptid 'children of lightning and death' etc Maybe a bit feral and living with dragons while freeing them from trappers & becoming myths in themselves lol
Clark probably still raised by farmers/traders (maybe found the baby on the remnants of a small fishing boat wrapped in silk and dragon scales/his cape)
Diana/wonder woman is probably something similar to that one island from race to the edge (I think called the Valkyries but I don't remember lol) that consists of warrior women who look like they have wings but it's small (or young I also don't remember lol) dragons that cling to their backs
Aquaman, I mean, underwater caves and hidden islands and sea dragons and all that (We've seen water dragons that carry people on their backs via ships or in their mouths before)
Pretty much justice league but they are or become dragon riders lol

So Tosk had a 'fun' 'exciting' time last session (searching a big spooky house which contained a very fast and very invisible vampire with a crossbow, who really did not want us to be there)

[For Syringe!]
— The mechanic was back in Crossroads doing shopping, most likely for the same things as last time. Though, he was a bit sluggish, and looked tired. Well, more than usual at least.
— @wrenches-and-wires
-> Oh! That friendly doctor seemed to be making his way through Crossroads as well. Body hunched, head tilted downwards slightly and that same nervous, unsure of himself expression still plastered on his face.

Realizing I'm once again putting myself in danger of getting worried comments from people about their favorite character getting the shit kicked out of them too much in my fic but
BUT
this time I have an excuse. Astarion really did get the fuck beat out of him Every. Fight. from partially through act 1 up until I respecced him at the beginning of act 3 in my first playthrough. That dude needed all of the healing. All the time. Drinking all the health potions. Covered in blood. Most of the cleric's healing words are for him and him alone. Just on the ground, moaning in pain, the little death save counter over him while Ronan rushed to aid him and I, the hapless player, got a little twitch under my eye from the rogue losing out on a turn he could be stabbing once again.
I'm just documenting. I'm just relaying canon. He goes through an arc of getting good at combat in the background of the romance and self-discovery. It's fine.
