I know it's not canon, but ever since I read in a fanfic that the reason Kakashi wears a mask is because the Hatakes have heightened senses of smell (similar to the Inuzukas) due to their connection to ninken, that has been my canon. Like in the fic, Sakumo didn't need one because his sense of smell, while strong, wasn't as strong as Kakashi's making it easier for him to master it easier, but Kakashi just never get the hang of it because of how sensitive his sense of small was, so he wore masks to add a kind of barrier. I cannot for the life of me remember which fanfic I read that had this, but it has fully defined my view of him and why he wears his mask.
