I always though Mal's mom was meant to be like "Eleanor" but they stuck an M at the start honestly, Sobbing Emoji. But "Maleanor" also makes me feel less insane since in that scene where she's just handed egg Malleus to Lilia and went to battle, it sounds more like Lilia is saying "Maleanor" than "Meleanor" (Japanese accent pending). Mayhaps they went more with what it sounded like the characters were saying :0 (we don't talk about Doodle Suit to Paint The Roses)

the transliteration of her name is Marenoa (マレノア), which is what all the voice lines are saying! all the Draconias' names start with マレ (Malleus' grandma is Maleficia/マレフィシア) as a nod to Maleficent. :D it's almost certainly a take on Eleanor, which is Erenoa (エレノア), but her name is written in English at a couple points, and I was pretty surprised to see it was Mel instead of Mal!

and, like, that's fine, it wouldn't be first Twst romanization that's tripped me up (like Keito for Cater, I know that's something to do with the loanword specific to playing cards(?) but it's just not how my brain wants to read it). but now Eng has given us Maleanor! and someone else said it was spelled inconsistently between Maleanor and Maeleanor??????? so WHO KNOWS it's a SPELLING FREE-FOR-ALL

I AM torn on which I want to use, because Mel just sounds so cute to me (and is what I'm used to now), but...the Mal consistency is kinda too good to pass up. alas, alas, truly these are the most difficult conundrums of our times. 😔

Whumpee sat on Friend's couch, staring at their phone in horror. They couldn't believe what they were seeing. Couldn't believe that their greatest shame had come back to haunt them.

"I'm sure it's not that bad, Whumpee," Friend said as they sat down next to Whumpee, setting their phone down on the coffee table.

"It really is, Friend. I....I haven't told you everything about it. I.....I think you would feel differently about me."

Friend stared at Whumpee, taking Whumpee's hand in theirs and squeezing. "I believe you. I believe you and," they sniffed, their own eyes filling with tears, "I am sorry this has happened to you."

Whumpee wouldn't let themself cry. They couldn't. The blackmailer would win if they cried. They had to comply or the whole world would know what happened to them. They couldn't let that happen. But they wouldn't let the blackmailer get the satisfaction of watching them cry. They were certain that the blackmailer had cameras here, too. They knew too much about Whumpee. Had too many videos.

"What do they want you to do?" Friend swiped at their eyes.

"I don't know yet. They said a list was to come if I replied. If I don't, they'll release all the footage. And then I'll be ruined."

"You have to reply, Whumpee! You can't let them win." Friend urged Whumpee. They squeezed Whumpee's hand tightly. "I'll support you no matter what."

With a solemn nod, Whumpee hit the send on the reply they had drafted up hours ago. They had just needed someone to be with them when they did this. Who knew how long it would take the blackmailer to get back to them.

A loud ping had Whumpee jumping. Friend's phone had pinged. Friend's phone only pinged for them. Friend had said they set a custom tone specifically for Whumpee because they were so accident prone. The growing pit in Whumpee's stomach dropped. They turned and looked at Friend. Really looked at Friend. "You?"

Friend's tearful expression suddenly dropped as Friend Whumper gave a sinister smile. "Me."

"I don't...." Whumpee couldn't finish. This couldn't be true.

"You were by far the tastiest of all my victims. You are the one of all of them that I have gone back to again and again. And you will do everything I ask of you or else the world will know just how tasty you really are."

"You're a monster!"

Whumper smirked. "That may be. But I am the one with all of the video recordings of what I did to you. You would hate for everyone to find out." They patted Whumpee's cheek. "I'm going to enjoy this almost as much as I enjoyed tasting you."

I was Once Again thinking about that one SBS question and more specifically about how it had been translated, when I accidentally came across this lowres photo of it (on KnowYourMeme of all places lmao)

So the reason I had been wondering about the actual translation of what Oda said here, is because while Viz translated the first sentence of Oda's reply as "I wonder if any of them have been married.", fantranslations have ranged from "The marriage experience, huh." to "I wonder if any of them have been to a wedding."

Needless to say, those are all very different things.

But now that I got access to the original text, I get to read it for myself and check what Oda actually said! So here goes (assuming I'm parsing the lowres jpg correctly)

結婚経験あるんですかねー。子供がいるのかいないのか知りませんが、とりあえず僕の想像でお楽しみください。 Kekkon keiken arun desu ka nee. Kodomo ga iru no ka inai no ka shirimasen ga, toriaezu boku no souzou de otanoshimi kudasai.

Arguably, the most literal (and thus clunky) translation would go something like "I wonder if they do have experience in marriage. I don't know if they have kids or not, but for now please enjoy what I imagined up". So I would say Viz's official translation is indeed the best/most accurate one-- like for the "been to a wedding" version to be an accurate translation then Oda would've had to say something along the lines of 結婚式に行ったことあるのかな (Kekkonshiki ni itta koto aruno ka na), and the "marriage experience, eh" version excludes Oda wondering if any of the three actually have any.

And, yeah, now I know. Fan vs official translations can have very interesting differences to begin with for a variety of reasons (not even getting to when mistranslations happen, which can and does happen to both), but with a series like this with a lot of "Oda said this" and "Oda said that" going around, it is really nice if you can doublecheck things yourself. Now this translation ghost will no longer haunt me!

And I can focus all my neurons on the missing ring instead!

They confuse the other students so much because now Espio and Charmy (and the others on the floor to certain extent) just randomly call Vector "Father" or "Dad" and he happily responds with "SON!" and gives them a big hug.

So story time: my IRL bestie ( @sparkles-rule-4eva) and I and some friends were talking about adoption, and joking that since Sparkles had just turned 21, she could adopt someone who was 17. And then we remembered our freshman friend J who was 17. So we were like, "Why don't you adopt J?"

So we planned this whole thing out, and Sparkles got this jar of baby food, and we all traipsed down to the student center when J was there and she dramatically "proposed" to him with the baby food jar and asked him to be her son. And it's been like a year and whenever they see each other he's like, "Mother!" and she goes "Son!" And it's absolutely hilarious.

And so me thinking how funny and cute that would be with Vector and Espio basically ended up being the inspiration for HUAU.

When Cross Guild is formed, Doflamingo goes to their headquarters and blasts Cher on Karai Bari's port in hopes it gets Crocodile to let him join.

Crocodile calls Robin and apologizes.
